There are plenty of “Cyber-Cafes” where you can use a computer for as little as 10 pesos an hour, with headphones, microphone and even a webcam. Now, there are also many places with WiFi, so if you brought your own laptop it would only cost you the price of a good latte...

If you are not in one of the big hotels and have a lot of laundry to do, there are many small laundry places which provide the service at a very affordable price, 12 pesos per kilo (2.2 lbs), and some even have “same day service”.
The common rate for tips in restaurants in Mexico, goes from 10 to 15%. A few places add a charge for “service” so don’t feel obligated to tip in these cases. For guys performing on public buses, supermarket grocery baggers and activity guide tours tipping is expected.

Even though there are signs on the sidewalks, streetlights and zebra crossings, we strongly recommend you to look both ways every time you are going to cross a street. Mexicans are cool and fun, but somehow chaotic, so better not try your luck. Take special care with public buses.
The same electrical system that is used in the US and Canada, is used in Mexico: 110 volts - 60 Hz. But most outlets in Puerto Vallarta are of the old two-prong variety, so it’s a good idea to buy an adapter for all your three-prong electronic devices, at any local supermarket.

If you have had enough of lying down by the beach or pool and want to practice some “free of charge” activities, you can pass by the Municipal Stadium (check out our Hotel Zone Map on page 34) and get into a “pick up” game of soccer or basketball, it’s easier to join in if you bring your own ball. There are also softball, baseball, and volleyball courts, as well as a nice running track.
Tap water in Puerto Vallarta is one of the best in Mexico and comparable to US and Canada standards. However the system of pipes that water runs through, is not. Anyway, most locals drink bottled water, so you might want to follow their example. For cooking, Enjoy recommends to use a disinfectant such as “Microdyn” to purify the water you use while handling food.

Marine turtles are among the oldest creatures in the world. Of the eight species that exist in the planet, seven visit Mexico and lay their eggs on its beaches.
is a species classified as in danger of extinction by both, the Mexican Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It averages 2 meters in length and a weight of 500 kilograms, it has a distinctive dark brown or black shell with white or pink spots and in contrast with other species, the leatherback turtle doesn’t have nails on its front flippers.
It
feels comfortable in temperatures between 43°F and 59°F, but studies have shown that it can get to depths of 1,200 meters under sea

The leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea),
level, which suggests that they can tolerate lower temperatures, as the water temperature at those levels is never above 41°F. Besides, these turtles are able to regulate their body temperature by controlling their blood flow. They lay from 60 to 100 eggs every other year and five times by season.
The
leatherback turtle travels long distances thanks to sea currents and it nests in the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero and Oaxaca all in the Pacific coastline. Protection work can be appreciated in the Bahía de Banderas area of Nayarit. At the northern beaches of the Yucatán peninsula, Pronatura Península de Yucatán receives the leatherback turtle in turtle camps that works hard to protect them. © César Cardoso

Las tortugas marinas son de las criaturas más antiguas del mundo. De las ocho especies que existen en el planeta siete visitan México y desovan en nuestras playas.
La
tortuga laúd (Dermochelys coriacea), ha sido calificada como especie en peligro de extinción por la Secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat) y por la Unión Internacional para al conservación de la naturaleza (UICN). Llega a medir hasta 2 metros de largo y pesar media tonelada, se distingue por su caparazón de color café oscuro o negro con manchas blancas o rosadas y difieren de otras especies por no tener uñas en las aletas frontales.
Es capaz de soportar temperaturas de 6°C a
15°C. Aunque también se ha podido averiguar que puede llegar hasta 1,200 metros bajo el nivel del mar, lo que hace pensar que puede tolerar temperaturas más bajas, ya que la temperatura del agua a esa profundidad raras veces está por
encima de 5°C. Además, esta especie es capaz de regular su temperatura corporal controlando su flujo sanguíneo. Presentan un ciclo bianual de anidación de 60 a 100 huevos. Esta especie puede anidar en promedio cinco veces por temporada con intervalos de 9 a 10 días.
Viaja grandes distancias gracias a las corrientes
marinas, anida en el Pacifico mexicano principalmente en las costas de Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero y Oaxaca. El trabajo de protección puede apreciarse en la Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit. There’s something about
Yelapa…
…that everybody loves it. Everything I read or heard about it, was that it belongs to another age, one with no roads, cars and just very few phones in town. That it is a chosen place, that you might not be able to describe it or explain why it is so special, but that once you were there you would understand.
So, I had to see it by myself, I had to found out
what is it about this hidden town a few miles South of Puerto Vallarta, that makes such lasting impressions on everybody. And well, I got on the water taxi to Yelapa, because there are no roads they said, there is only jungle and the sea.
Forty five minutes later, there I was, and finally I
understood. Is it just another beach with palapas? Yes it is, but there’s something more, an attitude, a magic, something that no travel guide or website will be able to communicate in its full meaning. It´s nature, but also the people, may be the way the sunlight hits town at sunset or the tranquility of the sea, but now I can tell you for sure, that there’s something about Yelapa…

Que todo el que la conoce se enamora de
ella. Todo lo que leía o escuchaba sobre ella era que pertenecía a otra época, a una donde no hay carreteras, ni carros, y muy pocos teléfonos. Que es un lugar elegido, que quizá no puedas describir de qué se trata o explicar por qué razón es tan especial, pero que una vez que la conociera, entendería.
Entonces
decidí que tenía que verlo por mis propios ojos, tenía que descubrir qué es lo que tiene este pueblito escondido a unos cuántos kilómetros al sur de Puerto Vallarta, que provoca tales sentimientos en la gente. Así que ahí estaba, en la panga que me llevaría a Yelapa, porque no hay carreteras, tan sólo la selva y el mar.
Cuarenta y cinco minutos después, me encontré
en Yelapa y finalmente entendí. ¿No es tan sólo otra playa con palapas? Sí, pero hay algo más, una actitud, una magia, algo que ninguna guía turística o sitio web podrá transmitir completamente. Es la naturaleza, pero también la gente, quizá la manera como cae la luz del sol al atardecer, o la tranquilidad del mar, pero ahora sí puedo decirle con seguridad, que algo tiene Yelapa que la hace especial...

Where to go... Boca de Tomatlán
Beautiful beach surrounded by an amazing tropical forest. There you can
take the “pangas” (water taxis) to Las Ánimas, Majahuitas, Yelapa and Quimixto. While there, don’t miss the chance to swim in its tranquil waters and eat some great seafood. It’s 15 miles South of Puerto Vallarta by the highway to Barra de Navidad and you can take a bus from Basilio Badillo St.

Small bay surrounded by the jungle, where the Mismaloya river finds the
sea. This beach became world famous when John Huston decided to film “The Night of the Iguana” in the 60’s. It’s 13 miles South of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz Airport by the highway to Barra de Navidad.

of“laid back” style. It’s a colourful village where many expats have found a home and started their own bussines. If you visit just one beachtown in the area, you should visit this one. It’s only 20 miles North of the Airport by the highway to Tepic.

FINISH THE SAND SHOT (EN LA TRAMPA DE ARENA)
MAKE A GOOD GRIP (TEN UN BUEN AGARRE)
A solid grip is fundamental to have a solid game.
In order to have one, first grip the club with your gloved hand and place the handle in the fingers between the first knuckle and the palm. Follow this by applying the ungloved hand comfortably around the handle. The thumb and index fingers of both hands form two Vs, pointing to your right shoulder. This should make for a solid grip.
Un agarre sólido es fundamental para tener
un juego sólido. Lo primero que hay que hacer para conseguirlo es agarrar el palo con la mano con guante y colocar el mango del mismo entre el primer nudillo y la palma. Enseguida, acercamos la mano sin guante y la colocamos cómodamente alrededor del mango. El pulgar y el dedo índice de ambas manos deben formar dos Vs que apunten hacia tu hombro derecho. Esto debe resultar en un sólido agarre.
The sand shot shouldn’t be as hard as it looks.
For instance, you should hit down and behind the ball and let the sand lift the ball. But you must keep in mind not to dig the wedge too deep into the sand, the idea is not to excavate the ball. Just try to make a full finish, swing all the way through a balanced finish position and this will help to make a shallower sand divot and get the ball out of the sand.
La trampa de arena no es tan difícil como parece.
Para empezar, debes golpear la pelota desde abajo y atrás, y dejar que la arena la levante. Pero hay que tener cuidado de no meter el bastón demasiado profundamente en la arena, la idea no es excavar la pelota. Sólo intenta terminar tu golpe completamente. From
the beaches of Hawaii and the rest of Polynesia, to those of California, and from there, to the rest of the world, surfing has keep its mystical appeal, its atmosphere of ancient ritual where communion with nature is possible and surfers maintain that image of free souls in a perpetual search.
Surfing
in Mexico is more alive than never before and the Banderas Bay has its own share of great beaches to practice this exciting sport. At the North End of the bay the waves are at their best, passing La Cruz all the way to Punta Mita, and going further North to Sayulita and San Pancho, beautiful towns with the right surf attitude.

Something is moving in the normally quiet South
coast of Jalisco, the so-called Costa Alegre, and it’s a huge thing. The Governor of the State called it “the new Cancún” and while that is yet to be seen, this is an ambitious project that is planning to develop that part of the coast as a low-density, eco-friendly touristic destination.
The first step for this mega-project to become a
reality, is the construction of a new International Airport in the area of Chalacatepec, where they have already started cleaning the land. The second step will be an important investment to improve
the national highway 200 which goes from Puerto Vallarta all the way to Barra de Navidad and that would make the area even more accessible.
This
is a project with the approval of the National Board of Tourism of Mexico and the money is coming from the private sector and the government in equal parts. Goldman Sachs is one of the firms behind the project and that says it all. Several real estate developments in the region are already being commercialized, which is the best signal that this is for real and that Mexico keeps getting stronger on the tourism sector. © Paraíso Perdido

se está moviendo en la costa sur de Jalisco, en la llamada Costa Alegre, y es algo muy grande. El gobernador del estado lo llamó “el nuevo Cancún” y mientras eso aún está por verse, se trata de un ambicioso proyecto que planea desarrollar esa parte de la costa como un destino turístico de baja densidad y alta conciencia ecológica.
El
primer paso de este megaproyecto, es la construcción de un nuevo Aeropuerto Internacional en el área de Chalacatepec, donde ya han comenzado los trabajos de limpieza del terreno. El segundo paso, será una importante
inversión para remodelar la carretera federal 200 que va de Puerto Vallarta hasta Barra de Navidad y que hará aún más accesible el destino.
El proyecto cuenta con el aval del Fonatur y
el financiamiento del mismo proviene a partes iguales del gobierno del estado y la iniciativa privada. Goldman Sachas es una de las firmas detrás del proyecto y eso lo dice todo. Algunos desarrollos de bienes raíces en la región ya han comenzado a ser comercializados, lo que es la mejor señal de que esto va en serio y de que México sigue fortaleciendo su posición en la industria turística internacional.

We all love the beaches and the mountains of
Puerto Vallarta, that combination is what makes it so unique and different from any other Mexican beach town. But now, there is this other place where one can enjoy a different aspect of nature: the river.
The Parque Lineal de la Ribera del Río Pitillal,
makes for a great walk along the Pitillal river, a perfect place for jogging with friends and pets, and right in the heart of the city. When finished, the river walk was supposed to be four miles long on both sides of the river and would end at the sea, but the project has been cancelled as authorities said it is too expensive..
Enjoy
highly recommends to visit the river walk, it’s nice, it’s different and if authorities see that people love it, they might realize that it is worth the investment.

Todos amamos las playas y montañas de Puerto
Vallarta, esa combinación es lo que le da a nuestra ciudad ese toque tan único que lo diferencia de cualquier otra playa mexicana. Pero ahora, hay otro lugar donde se puede disfrutar de un aspecto distinto de la naturaleza: el río.
El Parque Lineal de la Ribera del Río Pitillal,
es un paseo estupendo a lo largo del río Pitillal, el lugar perfecto para salir a correr o caminar con amigos y mascotas. Cuando lo completaran, el paseo por el río sería de 7 km de extensión a lo largo de ambas orillas del río y terminaría en el mar. Pero el proyecto ha sido cancelado pues de acuerdo con las autoridades es demasiado caro.

recomienda ampliamente visitar el paseo por el río, es bonito, es diferente y si las autoridades ven que a la gente le gusta, quizá se den cuenta que se trata de algo en lo que vale la pena invertir, ya que le da una dimensión totalmente nueva a la ciudad.

Mexican recipes for Gringos!
Mole is one of the most typical dishes of Mexican cuisine, with indigenous roots and Spanish
influences. The name means “sauce” and comes from the Nahuatl mulli, and it’s so unique because is a mix of chillies with chocolate, giving as a result a delicious sauce abit spicy and a bit sweet. Sounds weird? Just give it a try and you will see why Mexicans love it…
INGREDIENTS: 8 boneless skinless chicken breast halves ¼ cup olive oil ¼ cup finely chopped onion
1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon dried cilantro 1/8 tablespoon dried minced garlic 1 (10oz) can condensed tomato soup 1 (4oz) can diced green chile peppers Serves 4
1° Brown the chicken breasts in olive oil and set aside. 2° Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat, and cook the onion until tender. 3° Mix in cocoa powder, cumin, cilantro, and garlic. 4° Stir in the tomato soup and green chile peppers. 5° Bring to a boíl, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer 10 minutes. 5° Pour directly over chicken and add sesame. 6° Serve it with rice and hot corn tortillas.

On
the celebration of the 16th Gourmet Festival, one of the chefs that’s been part of the festival since its first edition, Chef Bernard Güth of Trio and Vitea, is preparing something really special with his friend Tomás Fernández, chef of Casa Tomás restaurant in Guadalajara.
Tomás comes from the Basque Country, a place
widely recognized for its sophisticated cuisine and home of some of the best restaurants in the world. Together, they will be offering homemade food typical to northern Spain, but with a modern and fresh style of preparation.
According
to Chef Bernard, the idea of the festival is to bring chefs from all over the world and to offer them the restaurants of Puerto Vallarta, “it’s like opening a whole new

restaurant for a few days”. The visitor chefs take over the kitchen and start working on new dishes, bringing with them all their knowledge and background and leaving new techniques and gastronomic possibilities.
This year’s big night for Chef Bernard and Chef
Tomás will be held on Sunday 14th of November, when they will be hosting a Winemaker’s Dinner with a theme of Spanish wines and Basque cuisine at Trio Restaurant.

Mexican Cuisine: Heritage of Humanity
On August
1st, UNESCO made the official announcement that it had granted the status of Masterpiece of the Oral an Intangible Heritage of Humanity to Traditional Mexican Cuisine. Highly appreciated worldwide and widely recognized as one of the best cuisines in the world, Mexican Cuisine now has become the first cuisine ever to be considered Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Mexico’s application to UNESCO stressed the
traditional use of a wide variety of ingredients such as corn, beans, squash, chile and agave, which give Mexican food and Mexican culture in general their distinctive character. Could you imagine a Mexico without tacos or without tequila? That’s exactly the point made by Mexicans and recognized by UNESCO, that Mexican cuisine has evolved and become much more than just food and beverages, being an essential part of the culture of a nation with millennial roots.
The
formal announcement will be made at an annual conference taking place in Nairobi, Kenya from the 15th to 19th of November 2010.

El
primero de agosto, la UNESCO declaró oficialmente a la gastronomía mexicana como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad. Apreciada internacionalmente y ampliamente reconocida como una de las mejores cocinas del mundo, la Cocina Tradicional Mexicana se ha convertido en la primera cocina del mundo en ser considerada Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad.
La aplicación que la delegación mexicana envió
a la UNESCO, se enfocó en el uso tradicional de una amplia variedad de ingredientes como el maíz, frijol, calabaza, chile y agave, que le otorgan su carácter distintivo a la Cocina Mexicana y a la cultura mexicana en general. ¿Se imagina un México sin tacos o sin tequila? Pues ése es precisamente el punto señalado por la delegación mexicana y ahora reconocido por la UNESCO, que la Cocina Mexicana ha evolucionado de tal manera que se ha convertido en algo mucho más importante que sólo alimentos y bebidas, siendo parte esencial de la cultura de una nación con raíces milenarias.
El
anuncio formal se realizará en una conferencia anual a celebrarse en Nairobi, Kenia del 15 al 19 de noviembre del 2010.

one is easy, put all ingredients into a blender. Blend at a high speed for a short time. Strain into a Collins glass, a cocktail glass, or a hurricane glass (as the picture) all of them are accepted for the Piña Colada. Serve with a straw and adorn it with a wedge of pineapple or a cherry.

An evocative art Un arte evocador
Davis is an artist born in Seattle but Mexican
by adoption. He’s been living in this country since 1985 and moved to Puerto Vallarta five years ago. His work goes from the conceptual to the figurative art, expressed in paintings, sculptures and installations that have been exhibited in galleries and museums in Europe, North America and Latin America.

of his majors concerns is to bring the conceptual art to Puerto Vallarta, as he feels that the artistic scene in the bay is too one-dimensional, focused only in exploring the exotic side of Mexico, especially for the eyes of outsiders. “This is not wrong”, he says, but he would like to see a wider variety of artistic proposals in the city, which would, with no doubt, enrich the art life of the area with new and refreshing ideas.
es un artista nacido en Seattle pero mexicano por adopción. Ha vivido en nuestro país desde 1985 y desde hace cinco años reside en Puerto Vallarta. Su trabajo puede considerarse conceptual aunque también se mueve por el terreno de lo figurativo, mismo que expresa a través de sus pinturas, esculturas e instalaciones que ha exhibido en galerías y museos de Europa, Norteamérica y Latinoamérica.
Una de sus principales preocupaciones es la de
traer más arte conceptual a Puerto Vallarta, puesto que siente que la escena artística en la bahía se encuentra muy enfocada en explorar el lado exótico de México, especialmente visto a través de los ojos de extranjeros. “Esto no está mal”, dice, pero le gustaría ver una mayor variedad de propuestas artísticas en la ciudad, con lo que sin duda se enriquecería el arte de la región al entrar en contacto con ideas nuevas y refrescantes.

l Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead is one of the most typical Mexican traditions and as such, it can be traced back to indigenous cultures. On November 2nd, family and friends gather together to pray for and remember those who have died.

Like everything in Mexico, the actual celebration of Día de
Muertos is a mixture of different cultures and traditions, one more expression of the mestizaje or crossbreeding, on which the country has been built. An indigenous tradition has taken the form and date of a Catholic holiday, bringing as a result this colorful and intriguing custom that is so appealing to the eyes of the outsider.
On Día de Muertos Mexicans go to cemeteries to clean and
decorate the graves of beloved ones, it’s also very common to build an altar de muertos (shrine for the dead), which includes pan de muerto (bread of the dead), lots of orange Mexican marigolds or cempasúchitl, the Náhuatl name for this flower. On the altar there would always be the picture of the person to which the altar is dedicated to and some other offerings as food and beverages, as the tradition goes that the dead eat the spiritual essence of the offerings.
On that day, skulls can be found everywhere, the Aztecs
used to keep them as trophies and display them during the rituals to symbolize death and rebirth; somehow they found their way into the new Catholic festivity and now they are just candy as the real skulls have been substituted by sugar skulls. Nevertheless, they are still one of the most powerful icons of Mexico in the form of Catrinas, skeleton figures that perfectly symbolizes the strange relation that Mexicans keep with the death.

l Día de Muertos se ha convertido en una de las tradiciones más mexicanas que existen y, como tal, sus orígenes podemos rastrearlos a nuestro pasado prehispánico. El 2 de noviembre, familiares y amigos se reúnen para recordar y rezar por aquéllos que nos han dejado, tal como se ha venido haciendo desde hace siglos.
Como todo en México, la celebración del Día de
Muertos es una mezcla de culturas y tradiciones, una expresión más del famoso mestizaje sobre el que se ha construido nuestra nación. Una tradición indígena que ha tomado la forma y la fecha de una fiesta católica, dando como resultado esta colorida e intrigante costumbre que tanto llama la atención de los extranjeros.

n ese día, uno ve calaveras por todos lados, los aztecas acostumbraban guardarlas como trofeos y las mostraban a todo el mundo durante los rituales que simbolizaban la muerte y el renacimiento de la vida; esta costumbre de alguna manera logró filtrarse a la nueva festividad católica y ahora aparecen como dulces, ya que las calaveras reales han sido sustituidas por calaveras de azúcar. Sin embargo, siguen siendo uno de los íconos más poderosos de México en la forma de las Catrinas, figuras de esqueletos que simbolizan perfectamente la extraña relación que los mexicanos mantenemos con la muerte.

of the Mexican Revolution El Centenario de la Revolución
The social movement that gave form to modern Mexico is known as the Mexican Revolution. It took place from 1910 to 1920 and was a major armed struggle with plenty of sides fighting for power and between 1 and 2 millions of Mexicans dead as consequence.
It
all started with the idea to overthrow the dictatorial government of Porfirio Díaz, but it soon became a complete chaos perfectly summarized by historian John Womack who said: “The revolutionaries won. The question was: Which revolutionaries?”
The distribution of land was a major issue at the
moment and Emiliano Zapata became the leader of Mexican peasants. Nevertheless he was killed in 1919, before he could actually enact any agrarian reform.

At
the end of fighting and after almost every revolutionary leader got killed, a new Constitution was written, a new ruling party was in power and a new Mexico was born. This was a Mexico with social peace and political stability, although it still had a long way to go before enjoying the benefits of a real democracy.
2010
is an important year for Mexicans as they are commemorating both, the bicentennial of Independence and the centennial of the Revolution, in a huge celebration with events taking place all around the country. On November 20th, don’t forget to look out for the parade commemorating the Revolution at the Malecón.

moderno, es conocido como la Revolución Mexicana. Tuvo lugar de 1910 a 1920 aproximadamente y se trató de un conflicto armado de gran magnitud, con diversos bandos luchando por el poder y entre 1 y 2 millones de mexicanos muertos como consecuencia.

comenzó con la ida de derrocar al gobierno del dictador Porfirio Díaz, pero pronto se convirtió en un verdadero caos, perfectamente descrito por el historiador John Womack: “Los revolucionarios ganaron. La pregunta es: ¿Cuáles revolucionarios?”
La
distribución de la tierra era un tema de gran importancia en aquél entonces y Emiliano Zapata se convirtió en el líder de los campesinos mexicanos. Sin embargo, fue asesinado en 1919, antes de que pudiera realizar la reforma agraria que buscaba. Tomaría más de una década para que los campesinos vieran algún cambio en sus condiciones de vida.

Al final de los combates y tras haber sido asesinados la mayoría de los líderes revolucionarios, una nueva Constitución fue promulgada, un nuevo partido llegó al poder y un nuevo México había nacido. Este era un México con paz social y estabilidad política, aunque aún le faltaría mucho camino por recorrer antes de alcanzar una vida democrática plena.
2010 es un año importantísimo para los mexicanos que celebramos
tanto el Bicentenario de la Independencia como el Centenario de la Revolución, en una celebración nacional con eventos a lo largo y ancho del país.
