Vallarta and a bit more if you go out of town. “Centro” goes through downtown and “Túnel” goes around town. Every bus has where it is headed written on its windshield.

Laundry If you are not in one of the big hotels and have

a lot of laundry to do, there are many small laundry places which provide the service at a very affordable price, 12 pesos per kilo (2.2 lbs), and some even have “same day service”. © cc mysza831

Crossing Streets Even though there are signs on the sidewalks,

streetlights and zebra crossings, we strongly recommend you to look both ways every time you are going to cross a street. Mexicans are cool and fun, but somehow chaotic, so better not try your luck. Take special care with public buses.

Sports If you have had enough of lying down by the beach

or pool and want to practice some “free of charge” activities, you can pass by the Municipal Stadium (check Hotel Zone Map on page 34) and get into a “pick up” game of soccer, it’s easier to join in if you bring your own ball. There are also softball, baseball, basketball and volleyball courts, as well as a nice running track.

The common rate for tips in restaurants

in Mexico, goes from 10 to 15%. A few places add a charge for “service” so don’t feel obligated to tip in these cases. For guys performing on public buses, airport baggage handlers, supermarket grocery baggers and activity guide tours tipping is expected.

The same electrical system that is used in the US and Canada, is used in Mexico: 110 volts - 60 Hz. But most outlets in Puerto Vallarta are of the old two-prong variety, so it’s a good idea to buy an adapter for all your three-prong electronic devices, at any local supermarket.

Water Tap water in Puerto Vallarta is one of the best in Mexico

and comparable to US and Canada standards. Anyway, most locals drink bottled water, so you might want to follow their example. For cooking, Enjoy recommends to use a disinfectant such as “Microdyn” to purify the water you use while handling food.

Marietas Islands UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserve An

amazingly beautiful archipelago made up of two islands and two islets with such an extraordinary biodiversity that UNESCO declared them a Biosphere Reserve converting them into a protected wildlife sanctuary. They are located in an area of confluence of different water currents, making them a perfect habitat for plenty of animal and vegetal species.

Since

the famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau did some research in the waters surrounding the islands, they became a hot spot for snorkeling and scuba diving, with many tours offering the opportunity to watch giant manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins, humpback whales, octopus and sea horses.

Did you know? ? The Blue Footed Booby bird can only be found in two places on Earth, the Galapagos Islands and the Marietas Islands. ¿Sabías qué? El Alcatraz o Pájaro bobo patiazul sólo se encuentra en dos lugares del planeta, las Islas Galápagos y las Islas Marietas.

Un hermoso archipiélago conformado por dos islas y dos islotes con una biodiversidad tan extraordinaria que la UNESCO declaró el lugar Reserva de la Biósfera, convirtiéndolo en un santuario protegido para la vida silvestre. Se encuentran localizadas en un área de confluencia de distintas corrientes marinas, haciendo de las islas el hábitat perfecto para innumerable cantidad de especies animales y vegetales. Desde que el famoso oceanógrafo Jacques Cousteau realizara investigaciones en sus aguas, las islas se volvieron lugar favorito para la práctica del snórkel y el buceo, con muchas compañías ofreciendo tours a las islas y la oportunidad de contemplar manta rayas gigantes, tortugas marinas, delfines, ballenas jorobadas, pulpos y caballitos de mar.

It’s part of a collection of sculptures that

make of the Malecón of Puerto Vallarta, the most accomplished one of all the beach towns in México, El Caballito (the little horse) became the favorite of locals and tourists, may be for its innocence or simplicity, but we can say for sure that Puerto Vallarta wouldn’t be the same without it.

Bronze sculpture by Rafael Zamarripa, an artist from Guadalajara, that has become an icon of Puerto Vallarta. The statue was placed originally at Las Pilitas at the end of Los Muertos beach, but it got knocked down by waves and wind. In 1976, Zamarripa himself made a new version of the sculpture which was placed at its actual position in the Malecón.

Vallarta Botanical Gardens A living museum

This

place is one of my personal favorites of Puerto Vallarta, Bahía de Banderas and the Riviera Nayarit. Away from civilization and up in the mountains where the heat is not as intense, just by a river, there is a “living museum”, a place where nature is felt in every corner and visitors can reconnect with it.

Los Jardines Botánicos de Vallarta: Un museo viviente

Enjoy had an interesting chat with Robert Price,

curator of the Botanical Gardens and the man who started it all in 2005. He told us that even though he had always loved nature, he had no idea of how to develop botanical gardens. But he knew what he wanted and the process was long and hard. Nevertheless, the Gardens have not stopped growing since then, and today they are becoming what he once dreamt they would be. Robert has empashized portraying Mexican nature, and the Gardens contains 80% native Mexican plants in their formidable collection. Currently under construction is the impressive Conservatory for the collection of native Mexican orchids, which is planned for completion by next winter.

Este lugar es uno de mis favoritos de toda el área de Puerto Vallarta, Bahía de Banderas y la Riviera Nayarit. Alejado de la civilización, elevado en las montañas donde el aire es más fresco y el calor menos intenso, justo al lado de un río se encuentra este impresionante “museo viviente”, un lugar donde la naturaleza se siente en cada rincón y los visitantes pueden reconectarse con ella.

Enjoy tuvo una interesante charla con Robert Price, conservador de los Jardines Botánicos y el

hombre que hizo posible su nacimiento, allá por 2005. Robert tiene un gran interés en promover y reflejar la naturaleza mexicana y por tal razón mantiene un 80% de plantas originarias de México, dentro de su inmensa colección. Asimismo, está construyendo un nuevo invernadero de orquídeas, donde planea tener la más completa colección de orquídeas en México y que debe estar listo para la próxima temporada alta.

ut the Gardens are not only about plants and, as any important Botanical Gardens in the world, this one has a high end restaurant on the upper floor of a beautiful old Mexican style Hacienda, sitting on a cliff with a fantastic view of the river below and the mountains above. The cuisine is typical Mexican, with handmade tortillas and a wood fired brick oven where dishes from all over the country are cooked. There are also numerous pathways for trekking through the mountains or walking down to the river for a swim in the crystal clear water.

Pero el lugar no es sólo sobre plantas, como

en cualquier Jardín Botánico de importancia en el mundo, éste cuenta con un restaurant de excelente calidad, en lo alto de una colina, con una gran vista del río Horcones y de las montañas. La cocina es típica mexicana, con tortillas hechas a mano y un horno de leña donde son cocinados platillos de todas las regiones del país. Hay también diferentes senderos para internarse en las montañas o bajar al río y echarse un chapuzón en sus cristalinas aguas.

Where to go... Boca de Tomatlán

Beautiful beach surrounded by an amazing tropical forest. There you can

take the “pangas” (water taxis) to Las Ánimas, Majahuitas, Yelapa and Quimixto. While there, don’t miss the chance to swim in its tranquil waters and eat some great seafood. It’s 15 miles South of Puerto Vallarta by the highway to Barra de Navidad and you can take a bus from Basilio Badillo St.

arge beach of fine sand, favorite of those who practice surf, kitesurf and windsurf. It’s not a very crowded beach, although popular with locals. It’s located 15 miles Northwest of Puerto Vallarta by the highway to Punta Mita. If you take a bus, ask the driver for Punta Mita, it costs $15 pesos.

xtensa playa de fina arena, favorita de los practicantes del surf, kitesurf y windsurf. No es una playa muy concurrida, pero popular entre los locales. Se encuentra a 25 km al noroeste de Puerto Vallarta por la carretera a Punta Mita. Si viaja en autobús, el costo es de $15 pesos, sólo asegúrese de que el autobús lleve dirección a Punta Mita.

To get to the islands you have to go first to El Anclote, a town 25 minutes North of Puerto Vallarta by the highway to Punta Mita. One day at sea

The night before, my girl and I decided we wanted to do something different, so we googled

(is this a regular verb?) “snorkeling Puerto Vallarta” and there they were, plenty of sites that offered this kind of tour. We easily booked one for next morning.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning, the best possible scenario for a day out at sea. The boat was waiting for us at a beach just off the “Malecón”. We were lucky, there were only a couple of guys that were going to scuba dive and us, the snorkeling couple. So, we started the half an hour journey to Los Arcos National Park while having a sandwich, a soft drink and a good chat with the captain of our little but comfy boat.

“...all kinds of fish of the most amazing colors...” Once there, the divers got ready first and their

immersion deep into the submarine world was so cool. Then it was our turn, with much simpler equipment, just the visor, flippers and snorkel, we jumped out of the boat and started swimming near the biggest of the islets that have become a symbol of Puerto Vallarta. Our instructor started throwing bread to the water and suddenly we were in the middle of a twister of fish. They were right there, we could touch them, all kinds of fish of the most amazing colors, surrounding us in the most surreal of experiences.

e snorkeled, just the two of us, for one hour there and one hour at another spot where we were able to watch a magnificent ray swimming just below our feet, and my girl could even grab a balloon fish. Yes, after a while there were plenty of other boats, bigger boats, full of people who didn´t have the same luck as us and didn´t get a personalized tour, but from our point of view we could see they were enjoying themselves too. After that, we slept on the deck of the boat the whole journey back to the “Malecón”, getting a great sun tan and ready to walk around downtown streets and feel the life of Puerto Vallarta on a Sunday afternoon.

Un día en el mar

La noche anterior, mi chica y yo decidimos que queríamos hacer algo diferente, así que buscamos en Google “snorkeling Puerto Vallarta” y nos aparecieron numerosos sitios que ofrecían este tipo de tour. Sin muchas complicaciones reservamos uno para la mañana siguiente.

Era una hermosa mañana de domingo, el mejor escenario posible para un día afuera, en el

mar. El bote nos esperaba en la playa del Malecón, teníamos suerte, sólo había dos chicos que iban a bucear y nosotros dos, la pareja del snórkel. De esta manera, iniciamos nuestra travesía hasta el Parque Nacional Los Arcos, con un sándwich, un refresco y una buena conversación con el capitán de nuestro pequeño pero cómodo bote.

Una

vez llegados a nuestro destino, los buzos prepararon su equipo y comenzaron su inmersión a lo profundo del mundo submarino. Entonces, llegó nuestro turno, con un equipo mucho más sencillo, sólo el visor, las aletas y el snórkel, saltamos fuera del bote y empezamos a nadar cerca del más grande de los islotes que se han convertido en un símbolo de Puerto Vallarta. De repente, nuestro instructor, comenzó a tirar migas de pan en el agua y nos vimos rodeados por un colorido remolino de peces de todos los tamaños.

staban justo ahí, al alcance de nuestras manos, los podíamos tocar y parecían no tenernos ningún miedo, por un momento olvidamos que estábamos en la superficie, parecía como si realmente estuviéramos buceando con la cercanía de esos peces tan ávidos de nuestro pan. Snorkeleamos solos, por una hora en ese punto y una hora más en otro lugar cercano donde tuvimos la suerte de ver una magnífica mantarraya nadando justo debajo de nuestros pies, e incluso pudimos agarrar un fascinante pez globo. Y sí, después de un tiempo llegaron al lugar numerosos botes más, botes más grandes, llenos de gente que no tuvieron la misma suerte que nosotros y no gozaron de un tour personalizado como el nuestro, pero desde nuestra perspectiva parecía que también se lo estaban pasando muy bien.

Después

del segundo chapuzón, dormimos un rato en la cubierta mientras el capitán ponía rumbo hacia el Malecón, donde todavía era buena hora para caminar un rato por las calles del centro y sentir la vida de Puerto Vallarta en una tarde de domingo.

The

martini has been called an “American Classic” and it sure is, even though his most famous drinker is British: “Bond, James Bond”. Nowadays, is normally served with vodka, but the original one came with gin and an olive on top. This can change according to what type of Martini you are serving. We chose the strawberry one, for the season and for its glamour.

martini ha sido llamado un “Clásico Americano” y sin duda lo es, aún cuando su fan más famoso sea británico: “Bond, James Bond”. En estos días, suele servirse con vodka, pero el original se servía con ginebra y una aceituna. Sin embargo esto último puede cambiar de acuerdo con el tipo de Martini que estés sirviendo. Nosotros elegimos el de fresa, por la temporada y por el glamour de la bebida.

Preparation: - 1 1/2 - 2 oz gin (or vodka) - 1 tsp dry vermouth - 1 tsp strawberry syrup - Sugar - Strawberries Rub rim of chilled martini glass with a cut strawberry. Dip rim into a bowl of sugar until evenly coated. Pour Gin/Vodka, vermouth and syrup into a mixing glass with plenty of ice, and stir briskly. Strain into martini glass and drop in a strawberry.

Preparación: - 1 1/2 - 2 oz de ginebra o vodka - Una cucharada de vermut seco - Una cucharada de jarabe de fresa - Azúcar - Fresas Pasa una fresa cortada por el borde de una copa de martini, ahora escarcha el borde con un plato de azúcar. Sirve Gin/Vodka, vermut y jarabe, en un mezclador con mucho hielo y agítalo con fuerza. Sírvelo en la copa de martini y adórnalo con una fresa.

Japanese cuisine is based on combining staple

foods typically rice or noodles, with a soup and okazu (dishes made from fish, meat, vegetable and tofu) to add flavor to the staple food, what is also done with dashi, miso, and soy sauce. The Japanese view of food is not focused on ingredients, but on cooking techniques. This is an interesting twist, because they know and understand the ingredients they have at hand, but for them, the difference is in the way a meal is prepared. as an island nation eats a lot of sea food and Buddhism play a part on this, due to its restrictions on meat-eating. Tuna is one of the basic ingredients as it is present seemingly everywhere as dashi stock, usually made with katsuobushi (dried skipjack tuna flakes).

Of course, sushi is the best-known Japanese dish

in the world and it has become extremely popular in Mexico, where it has taken a life of its own and is starting to mix with Mexican culinary traditions.

TACOS!

Mexican recipes for Gringos!

The “tacos” are the most typical Mexican dish. There might be a Mexican that has never tasted the “Chiles en Nogada” or “Cochinita Pibil”, but every single Mexican has eaten tacos many, many times. A taco is composed of a corn or wheat tortilla folded around a filling, and here comes the magic of the taco, this filling can be anything you like! But a good taco will always be accompanied by garnishes such as salsa, cilantro, onions and lime.

Tortillas Salsa

1° Cook the chopped meat or chicken in a skillet. At this step you can prepare the meat or chicken in

your preferred way (you can do both at the same time!).

2° Heat the tortillas both sides on a grill and then put them inside a “tortillero”, if you don’t have one, put them between two plates to keep them hot. Please, never heat the tortillas in the microwave!.

3° Now you have your main dish ready and your tortillas hot. Take

a plate, take one tortilla from the “tortillero”, leave it open on your plate, get some meat or chicken and put it over your tortilla. Now just get everything else, a bit of tomato, onion and a cilantro, add some salsa on top and... a true Mexican will always finish his/her taco squeezing half a lime on it.

4° And

that’s it, try to close it folding the tops of the tortilla together, but remember that “taco that gets closed is not a taco”, meaning that everything will drip from it, before even getting near your mouth, but that’s the fun of it...

There is something about chocolate that makes

it special, kind of magic some would say. It’s known that the Aztec emperor Moctezuma, drank it as an aphrodisiac; in 16th century Spain, it quickly became a court favorite after the conquerors brought it back home and then it spread all over Europe in a few decades; even today, kids get crazy about it and books and films are made in its honor.

But it all started here, in Mexico, where the

ancient Mayas (even though some would say the Olmecs used it before them), discovered how to make chocolate out of the cacao tree, “it was a gift from the gods”, they said.

These days, the finest chocolates are supposed

to come from Europe, but you just have to remember that, in Mexico, chocolate has been an important part of civilization for three millennia to make you doubt about those claims.

Did you know? ? The word Chocolate came from the Aztec word “xocolatl”, meaning “bitter water”. (¿Sabías qué?) La palabra Chocolate proviene de la palabra náhuatl “xocolatl” que significa “agua amarga”.
