To call back home, your best option is the Telmex phone booths located all over town. You can buy a LADATEL card from 30 to 100 pesos at many convenience stores and they have the best rates by far:

There are plenty of “Cyber-Cafes” where you can use a computer for as little as 10 pesos an hour, with headphones, microphone and even a webcam. Now, there are also many places with WiFi, so if you brought your own laptop it would only cost you the price of a good latte...

If you are not in one of the big hotels and have a lot of laundry to do, there are many small laundry places which provide the service at a very affordable price, 12 pesos per kilo (2.2 lbs), and some even have “same day service”.

The common rate for tips in restaurants in Mexico, goes from 10 to 15%. A few places add a charge for “service” so don’t feel obligated to tip in these cases. For guys performing on public buses, supermarket grocery baggers and activity tour guides tipping is expected.

Even though there are signs on the sidewalks, streetlights and zebra crossings, we strongly recommend you to look both ways every time you are going to cross a street. Mexicans are cool and fun, but somehow chaotic, so better not try your luck. Take special care with public buses.

The same electrical system that is used in the US and Canada, is used in Mexico: 110 volts - 60 Hz. But most outlets in Puerto Vallarta are of the old two-prong variety, so it’s a good idea to buy an adapter for all your three-prong electronic devices, at any local supermarket.

If you have had enough of lying down by the beach or pool and want to practice some “free of charge” activities, you can pass by the Municipal Stadium (check out our Hotel Zone Map on page 44) and get into a “pick up” game of soccer or basketball, it’s easier to join in if you bring your own ball. There are also softball, baseball, and volleyball courts, as well as a nice running track.

Tap water in Puerto Vallarta is one of the best in Mexico and comparable to US and Canadian standards. However the system of pipes that water runs through, is not. Anyway, most locals drink bottled water, so you might want to follow their example. For cooking, Enjoy recommends to use a disinfectant such as “Microdyn” to purify the water you use while handling food.

Few cities in the world, owe so much to one

person, Puerto Vallarta owes to John Huston. This is not a reach, as Huston single-handedly put Puerto Vallarta on the map, when in 1963 he chose Mismaloya beach as the location for his film “The Night of the Iguana”, starring Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr.

Over night, Puerto Vallarta became a touristic

hot spot with special allure for celebrities, with the John Huston Café being the equivalent of 80’s-90’s famous café brands. The beach in itself is located in a secluded cove, right in front of Los Arcos National Park, a great place to practice snorkel and scuba dive. The beauty that captivated Huston is still there, even though some of its innocence has, maybe inevitably, faded with time.

JAGUAR (Panthera onca)

Its name comes from the Brazilian indigenous

group of the Tupi-Guarani. Yaguara means “animal that kills its prey with a single bound”. It’s the biggest cat in America, a nocturnal animal that wanders through the jungle in solitude. The only time when jaguars are not alone is during the mating season. The gestation period is around three months and normally produces two cubs. The cubs are born with their eyes closedshut and being mammals, nurse for as long as six months. By 18 months of age, jaguars can hunt by themselves and become fully independent.

Jaguars are the biggest cats in America,

a nocturnal animal that wanders alone through the jungle.

Two interesting aspects of its biology are; that

it is a predator at the top of the food chain and the great extension of wild territory where the species can be found. In Mexico, the jaguar has a stable population, although, the Norma Oficial Mexicana (Official Norm of the Mexican Government) considers it an endangered species and strictly forbids hunting it since 1987. The jaguar can be found in the tropical forest regions surrounding the Bay of Banderas and in the southern states of Campeche and Quintana Roo.

El periodo de gestación es alrededor de tres meses y la camada es normalmente de dos cachorros; nacen con los ojos cerrados y no los abren hasta las dos semanas, son amamantados por la madre hasta los cinco o seis meses, y al año y medio ya cazan solos y se hacen independientes.

aspectos interesantes de su biología son su condición de depredador máximo y la extensión de áreas silvestres que ocupa su territorio. En México aún tenemos poblaciones saludables de jaguar, la Norma Oficial Mexicana lo considera una especie en peligro de extinción y, desde 1987, existe una veda indefinida que prohíbe estrictamente su caza, captura, transporte, posesión y comercio en todo el territorio nacional. Este animal, puede encontrarse en el área de Puerto Vallarta, Quintana Roo y Campeche.

On the other hand, when you tend to miss your shots on the upper side of the hole, you are on track to becoming a good player, as the ball may actually find the hole, thanks to gravity. The key is speed.

hit a shot to fight against it, make the wind work to your advantage. In the picture, there’s a stiff wind blowing from right to left, instead of battling it, it’s better to hit a drawing tee shot with hopes that the wind works alongside to move the ball from right to left. Since playing with the wind, it’s likely that the draw will be more pronounced so you better make sure to aim farther right to allow for it.

The whales are back! Just like every year, this Winter, the fascinating Humpback whales are back in the waters

Mexican recipes for Gringos!

One of the most traditional Mexican breakfasts, Chilaquiles can be made in many ways; sometimes

they include chicken, others they’re only tortillas with salsa. We’ve chosen the most typical version that includes eggs. If you add fried beans to the plate, orange juice and a good cup of coffee to the table, you’ll have the real Mexican experience.

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup oil 2 cups chopped onion 15 corn tortillas, preferably stale, or left out overnight to dry out a bit, quartered into 6 wedges 3 eggs © cc Christian Gonzalez Veron

1 teaspoon salt ½ can (8oz) Mexican style hot tomato sauce (please don’t use Tabasco!) ¼ cup water ¼ cup shredded white cheese

1.Heat the oil to 350 °F (175°C) in a large skillet. 2.Stir in the onion and tortilla wedges (Be careful!) 3.Fry until tortilla strips are crisp and golden brown. 4.Remove from heat, and drain on paper towels. 5.Drain the skillet, leaving only a bit of oil. 6.Over medium heat, return tortillas to the skillet, and stir in the eggs. 7.Season with salt, cook and stir until eggs are firm. 8.Add the tomato sauce and water into the skillet. 9.Reduce heat and simmer until thickened (about 10 minutes). 10.Add cheese and continue cooking until it has melted. 11.Serve with sour cream on top.

in Frankfurt with some friends waiting for the start of a match. Walking around the old town, we came to a central square where beer was the main attraction. After a few days in the country, we already knew how important beer was for Germans, and how good their beer was. So, we decided to take a break and enjoy a cold typical beer from Frankfurt.

el Mundial del 2006 en Alemania, me encontraba con unos amigos en Frankfurt esperando el inicio de un partido. Paseando por el pueblo viejo, llegamos a una plaza central donde la cerveza era la atracción principal. Tras unos días en el país, ya teníamos una cierta idea de la importancia que los alemanes le otorgan a sus cervezas y de la calidad de las mismas. Así que decidimos tomar un descanso y disfrutar una típica cerveza helada de Frankfurt.

Pueden imaginar nuestra satisfacción cuando

encontramos un puesto anunciando en grandes letras: “Frankfurter 2 x1”. El universo conspiraba en nuestro favor, la típica cerveza de Frankfurt que buscábamos no podía tener nombre más perfecto que: “Die Frankfurter”. Ahí estábamos, cuatro tipos del otro lado del mundo, listos para vivir plenamente la “Experiencia Frankfurt”, cuando se nos acercó el hombre del puesto con cuatro salchichas en sus manos…

all of our excitement, we didn’t even bother to ask if a frankfurter was actually a beer, and we finished up with some giant sausages and no appetite at all. The lesson learned was: while traveling, is always better to ask about what you are ordering, to avoid surprises like that of the frankfurter.

Ponche Navideño

The Christmas fruit punch or “ponche” is a symbol of Christmas in Mexico, especially in cities

with cold weather during the winter months, as it’s a hot beverage. Even when we don’t have any true winter here in Vallarta, Ponche is a traditional part of Mexican posadas (pre-Christmas parties) and it will be a great element for your party on this holiday season.

INGREDIENTS: Serves 15 10 quarts water (40 cups) 2 quarts hot water (8 cups) 8-10 tejocotes 2 tamarind pods 6 guavas 3 lbs sugar cane ½ lb prunes 1 cup green apples peeled and chopped

2 pears, peeled and chopped 4 large oranges juiced 1 tsp ground cloves 8 oz walnuts, chopped 2 lbs piloncillo (if you can’t find it, use dark brown sugar) 2 cinnamon sticks 1 pint of Brandy

1° Soak the tamarind and the tejocotes in hot water for one hour. 2° Bring the 10 quarts of water to a boil in a very large pot, reduce to a slow simmer. 3° Remove the tamarind and the tejocotes from the soaking water, remove the shells from the tamarind and squeeze out the seeds from the pulp. 4° Cut the tejocotes into quarters and remove their skin. 5° Add tamarind and tejocotes to the simmering water. 6° Cut the guavas into quarters and add them in. 7° Chop the sugar cane into chunks, remove the outer skin and add them in. 8° Add in the remaining ingredients and simmer for 1 hour. 9° Remove cinnamon sticks before serving.

Use a large ladle and serve each cup with the chunks of fruit.

Posadas is the name Mexicans give to their Christmas parties. Posadas season

starts after our Lady of Guadalupe day and ends on Christmas Eve. The name comes from the story of St. Joseph and the Virgin looking for lodging (posada) on the night Jesus was born.

Ponche

The official beverage of every posada; what

makes it a unique drink are the tejocotes, which are actually the fruits of the hawthorn tree, but don’t forget the piquete (rum). You can find the recipe on page 70.

This most Mexican of traditions, can be seen

everywhere during holiday season. No posada is complete without a piñata.

Nacimiento

Nativity scene, it’s a representation of the birth of Jesus, with figurines depicting Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and a variety of other characters. It’s common to place it under the Christmas tree.

n January 6th, friends and family get together to commemorate the tradition of the Reyes Magos (Magi, Three Wise Men or Three Kings) visiting Mary and Joseph to welcome Jesus. It’s the last chance for kids to get presents and it represents the end of the Holiday Season in Mexico. The Rosca de Reyes is a ring shaped cake that contains figurines of baby Jesus. Whoever gets a figurine is supposed to take it to the local church and buy tamales for the Candelaria feast on February 2nd.

The story goes as follow: Juan Diego, an indigen from Central Mexico, saw a series of apparitions of the Virgin, asking him for a temple on the hills of Tepeyac, in Mexico City. When a priest asked Juan Diego for proof of the Virgin, he picked up roses from the field and carried them with his ayate (kind of poncho) to show the roses to the priest. When he opened up the ayate, the image of the Virgin was on it. That same ayate, can be seen today in Mexico’s City Basilica.
