Notes from the Last Continent
Intrepid explorer Gita Kay shares what she learned while fulfilling a childhood dream in Antarctica.
On the Cover
Antarctica’s Adélie penguin got its name from Jules Dumont d’Urville. In 1840 when the French explorer discovered the sea birds (the smallest penguin species on the continent), he named them after his beloved wife, Adéle.

Travel is Extraordinary
Oxford Languages defines the word extraordinary as “very unusual or remarkable.” At Range, we believe every travel experience is extraordinary, whether you’re splurging at an iconic hotel in Paris, or journeying to the farthest reaches of the planet on an expedition cruise. In this issue, we’ve collected some of our favorite extraordinary adventures to inspire your next trip: Discover seven astonishing natural wonders (and then some!) on page 8; uncover three destinations’ hidden gems with the experts who know them best (page 18) and find out how an expedition cruise helped one traveler achieve a goal she set in childhood (page 6).

In Search of Slumber
The number-one reason people are traveling this year is to rest and recharge — and that includes getting a good night’s sleep. This was the key finding in Hilton’s 2024 Trends Report, which revealed that travelers are prioritizing sleep in wellness travel, and that they rely on several conditions for quality shut-eye: the right soundtrack, earplugs to shut out noise and a good mattress. In answer to each, Hilton’s Motto properties feature rooms kitted out with smart technology, sound absorbers and premium mattresses.
Green Star!
At Atelier Moessmer Norbert Niederkofler, a destination restaurant in Brunico, Italy, chef Niederkofler’s approach to cuisine is to “cook the mountain.” His dishes showcase ingredients sourced from the surrounding Dolomites and it’s this commitment to sustainability that recently earned the restaurant, set in a refurbished 19th-century villa, a Michelin Green Star.

Notes from the Last Continent
By Gita Kay, asWhen I was 10, I made a list of everything I wanted to accomplish by age 30. Traveling to all seven continents was high on that list and, as my 30th birthday approached, I just had one continent left: Antarctica.
I spent years researching the trip, dreaming of those first steps onto a landscape that’s like a different planet: frozen and desolate, yet teeming with wildlife. This spring, I was finally able to cross Antarctica off my list — and it was worth the wait. To explore a pristine wilderness virtually untouched by humans was more surreal than I could have imagined. A world away from the noise pollution we all take for granted, I was struck by the total silence, broken only by the occasional crash of an ice floe, and the squawk of penguins. You can’t compare the experience to anywhere else you may have traveled, because frankly, nothing like it exists on Earth.
Here’s my advice for anyone — of any age — whose “list” includes this remarkable, rewarding adventure.
ABOVE
CHOOSE THE RIGHT CRUISE
Much of Antarctica’s appeal lies in its remoteness — the journey for most travelers involves a 600-mile cruise beyond the southernmost tip of South America. Small expedition ships offer a more immersive experience than larger liners because they can get closer to shore and generally offer more days on land. I opted for an 11-day expedition sailing out of Ushuaia, Argentina, with four days on land in the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula.
BE READY FOR ROUGH SEAS
It normally takes up to two days to cross the Drake Passage, the infamous stretch of open water between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands where waves can reach more than 65 feet. Even if you’re not prone to seasickness, it’s a good idea to explore preventative medications, such as scopolamine patches, which can help curb nausea.
KNOW WHEN TO BOOK
Antarctica’s summer runs from October to March, which is the only time temperatures make cruising possible. I chose March because it’s peak whale-
watching season. We spotted orca and minke whales and had a close encounter that left even our guide of 35 years deeply moved: A pod of humpback whales broke the surface just a few feet away from our Zodiac.
RESPECT THE WILDLIFE
You’ll be briefed on International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) guidelines for responsible travel during the voyage. Before leaving for shore, your boots will be disinfected to prevent contamination. Tour operators also block off penguin nesting sites ahead of time so you can
TOP
The scenic Lemaire Channel is a highlight on most itineraries.
BOTTOM March sailings present the best opportunities for whale-watching.
get close enough for photos without disturbing the birds.
MAKE IT MEANINGFUL
On Antarctic expeditions, time spent in transit is packed with on-board programming. Experts host lectures catering to every interest, from history to marine biology, providing a context for everything you’re about to witness, and even art classes to help you capture your memories on canvas.
7 Wonders You Can Do in a Day
These awe-inspiring sites — each easily accessible from a cruise port — showcase nature at its most dramatic.
By Brett Walther1Preikestolen
Stavanger, Norway
It’s one thing to experience the majesty of a Norwegian fjord from the deck of a cruise ship — and another thing entirely to gaze down at it from almost 2,000 feet in the air. That’s the vantage point provided by Preikestolen, also known as Pulpit Rock, a natural viewing platform carved into the Lysefjord clifftop by glaciers 10,000 years ago. If the vertiginous drop isn’t enough to get your pulse pounding, the panoramic views of southwestern Norway’s rugged landscape certainly will.
More Spectacular Summits
SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
If you didn’t take the cable cars to Sugarloaf’s summit, have you even been to Rio? The legendary landmark offers the best views of the city’s stunning harbor.
THE PITONS
Castries, Saint Lucia
The twin peaks of Saint Lucia’s southwest coast are actually dormant volcanic spires, with the larger of the two, Gros Piton, a popular climb along wellmarked trails.
CLIFFS OF MOHER Galway, Ireland
The idyllic rolling fields of the Emerald Isle come to an abrupt end at this five-mile-long stretch of shoreline, which plunges more than 700 feet into the crashing waves of the Atlantic.
Waitomo Glowworm Caves
Auckland, New Zealand
It could pass as the night sky — if you weren’t 150 feet underground. The tiny pinpricks of light on the walls and ceiling of these limestone caves are Arachnocampa luminosa, glowworms that are unique to New Zealand. First discovered by the local Māori in the 18th century, the “glowworm grotto” now counts descendants of those original explorers among its guides. Although their boat tours are the most conventional way to navigate this enchanted realm, adrenaline junkies can opt instead for an inner tube — an experience guides cheekily refer to as “black water rafting.”
More Great Reasons to Go Underground
RÍO SECRETO
Cozumel, Mexico
In a region already famed for its cenotes — freshwater pools formed in limestone sinkholes — these stalactite-rich river caves just outside Playa del Carmen are a standout.
ŠKOCJAN CAVES
Koper, Slovenia
Beneath the vineyards of Slovenia’s Karst region lies a labyrinth of limestone caves, including, at Škocjan, one of the world’s largest underground canyons. Crossing the bridge over the 150-foot-deep chasm is worth the ticket price alone.
CRYSTAL CAVES
Bermuda
Spectacular lighting brings out the best of this cave system, renowned for the remarkable clarity of its water: Stalagmites more than 50 feet below the surface appear close enough to touch.
A pathway of floating pontoons guides visitors through Bermuda’s dazzling Crystal Caves.
Cascate del Mulino
Civitavecchia, Italy
Next time you find Civitavecchia on your cruise itinerary, skip the standard day trip to Rome and travel the same distance to the dazzling spa town of Saturnia, where the healing properties of thermal springs have been tapped since the Bronze Age. Set against the bucolic backdrop of a Tuscan mill, the Cascate del Mulino flows: a gently steaming, silky-blue waterfall cascading over a series of limestone steps, and collecting in natural pools. At temperatures around 100°F (37.5°C), a soak in these sulfur-rich waters is the perfect tonic for the weary traveler — and admission is free.
More Hot Springs Worth Coming Ashore For
SEVEN HELLS
Beppu, Japan
Onsens have harnessed Beppu’s abundant hot springs for centuries, but you’ll need to keep your distance to admire them in their natural state: The so-called “Seven Hells” reach temperatures up to boiling point.
PALEA KAMENI
Santorini, Greece
It’s easy to forget that Santorini sits on the rim of an active volcano — until you dive into the hot-spring-fed waters off this island at the heart of the caldera.
UUNARTOQ HOT SPRINGS
Qaqortoq, Greenland
Located beside a fjord filled with icebergs, what these remote thermal pools might lack in amenities, they more than make up for in scenery.
Plitviče Waterfalls
Zadar, Croatia
The Dalmatian Coast tends to steal the spotlight on Croatian cruise itineraries, but a shore excursion inland reveals a landscape that’s lifted straight from a fantasy flick. Plitviče Lakes National Park is home to more than a dozen lakes at various levels, each one spilling into the next in a seemingly endless series of cascades. Between the spectacle of the waterfalls, the emerald lakes and lush forest surroundings, it’s a slice of paradise that’s made even more impressive by its accessibility, with well-maintained boardwalks skirting the falls so closely, you’re sure to feel their spray. If you’re chasing waterfalls from the port of Split down the coast, you’re also in luck: The Krka waterfalls boast scenery that’s just as inspiring, albeit on a slightly smaller scale.
More Must-see Waterfalls
‘AKAKA FALLS
Hilo, Hawai’i
For a short hike that delivers a huge payoff, venture to ‘Akaka Falls State Park, where you’ll encounter two waterfalls — the Kahuna (pretty) and the ‘Akaka (pretty mind-blowing) — on a half-mile loop.
GARAANNGADDIM WATERFALLS
Kimberley, Australia
No spine-tingling heights here: Instead, the mystifying “horizontal” waterfalls off the coast of western Australia are generated by strong ocean currents forcing their way through narrow gorges.
GULLFOSS WATERFALL
Reykjavik, Iceland
Crashing into the canyon below at more than 26,000 gallons per second, the big-ticket item on Iceland’s Golden Circle route is every bit as thrilling as its reputation suggests.
Plan to visit Gullfoss in summer, when the waterfall is at peak flow.
5
Murchison River Gorge
Geraldton, AustraliaWestern Australia’s sprawling Kalbarri National Park can claim a number of natural wonders linked to, and often created by, the meandering Murchison River. Over millions of years, it’s cut a 50-mile-long gorge into the sand plain that proves an irresistible shore excursion, rewarding visitors with glimpses of fossils and fascinating rock formations. The most impressive of these is Nature’s Window, an opening in the sandstone that frames a postcard-perfect view of the river. In this case, however, the river itself can’t take the credit: This geological oddity owes its creation to the erosive effects of the wind.
More Gorges to Explore
TITOU GORGE
Roseau, Dominica
Imagine a waterpark’s lazy river, but with the incredible scenery of a Caribbean rainforest — and a rush of adrenaline as you navigate the gorge’s twisting route.
ALCANTARA GORGES
Catania, Sicily
Walk the riverbed that winds through these narrow canyons and be transported to another world: Volcanic activity from nearby Mount Etna has left the gorge walls lined with lava monoliths, smoothed into surreal shapes by the river’s fast-flowing current.
WAIMEA CANYON
Nawiliwili Kaua’i, Hawai’i
When the volcano that formed the island of Kaua’i collapsed several million years ago, it created a 3,600-foot-deep gorge that’s often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

Mendenhall Glacier
Juneau, Alaska
As wondrous as this 13-mile-long river of ice may be, its easy accessibility is as much of a marvel. Mendenhall Glacier is just a half-hour bus ride from the port in downtown Juneau, and an abundance of outfitters offer endless opportunities to customize your excursion. A popular option is to kayak across Mendenhall Lake to the glacier’s face, weaving your way around small icebergs that have recently calved. Coming ashore, you can trade your paddles for crampons and scale the glacier itself, its crevasses giving hints of the eerie ice caves that occasionally form deep below.
More Glaciers That’ll Give You Goosebumps
VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER
Djúpivogur, Iceland
A Zodiac excursion through the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, choked with Vatnajökull’s calved icebergs, brings a sense of scale to Europe’s largest glacier, which covers eight percent of Iceland’s surface.
GARIBALDI GLACIER
The Chilean Fjords
Although this brilliant blue glacier is currently retreating, evidence of its staggering power is all around: Over the centuries, it’s carved out the entire Garibaldi fjord.
SERMEQ KUJALLEQ
GLACIER
Ilulissat, Greenland
The Ilulissat Icefjord is where the world’s fastest-moving glacier meets the sea, but it’s the age of Sermeq Kujalleq’s ice — some of it dating back a quarter of a million years — that provides vital clues for researchers studying the effects of climate change.
El Yunque National Forest
San Juan, Puerto Rico
A mere 45-minute drive from San Juan, El Yunque — the only tropical rainforest in the United States — feels worlds apart. Here, the soundtrack of the bustling city gives way to the chirp of tiny tree frogs (coquis) and the squawk of the endangered Puerto Rican parrot. Although you’ll have no trouble hearing the wildlife, it’s much trickier spotting it in the canopy of towering trees and the dense ferns that crowd the forest floor. A comprehensive trail system invites you to try, rolling out the welcome mat for exploration — and raising the bar for forest bathing.
More Unforgettable Rainforest Excursions
YAKUSHIMA Kagoshima, Japan
When it comes to old-growth trees, this forest in Japan’s Ōsumi Islands is positively primeval. Some researchers believe its famous Japanese cedar, Jōmon Sugi, to be up to 7,000 years old.
VERAGUA RAINFOREST
Puerto Limon, Costa Rica
There’s a daunting 3,400 acres of rainforest to discover at this mountain reserve, but you’ll cover plenty of ground in an open-air gondola, as well as a zip-line course through the canopy.
GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST
Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada
Of all the wildlife that calls this Pacific coast rainforest home — including grizzly bears, coastal gray wolves and cougars — it’s the elusive white-coated “spirit bear” (Kermode) that tops visitors’ wish lists.
The rare Kermode owes its distinctive coloration to a recessive gene.

ABOVE A local trader paddles to Tonlé Sap’s floating villages.
What makes Cambodia an extraordinary place to visit?
Despite its turbulent past, especially over the last 75 years, Cambodia is a growing, vibrant country with an energetic, young population. Most people know the famed Angkor Wat, near Siem Reap — the former Theravada Buddhist temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest religious complex in the world. We take visitors beyond the guided experience there with trained scholars who give them greater insight into the art, history and customs of the temple complexes.
RIGHT
Banteay Srei’s intricate stone carvings are a must-see.
What’s been one of your favorite experiences there?
On one of my first trips to the country, our chief guide took me out to the countryside to visit her aunt’s farm. I learned how they harvest water mimosa plants and pick lotus seed nuts to be used as flavorings and herbal medicines. Touring the local markets gave me a view of daily, rural life, but the highlight was stopping at a horse-drawn cart and having my first taste of Cambodian ice cream. The fresh flavors of mango and mint-chocolate — with bits of real mint leaves — awakened my taste buds.
Jim Selkin
Trails of Indochina
A travel industry professional for more than 40 years, including a stint as photographer for Air France, Selkin’s current role allows him to share his passion for Southeast Asia through photography and by training travel advisors on Trails of Indochina’s tours and experiences.
Which destinations should visitors be sure to see?
Of course, Siem Reap is the most visited and noteworthy. But seeing some of this city’s surrounding areas opens new vistas, such as the gem of Banteay Srei — a temple complex cut from pinkish-hued stone. Its name translates to Citadel of Women, as it is believed to have been built by women. If you visit between September and March, the water level is high enough for you to cruise through the narrow stretch of river connecting the Mekong River with Tonlé Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia.
Discover Natural Beauty and Culinary Delights in Portugal
Danilo Cerqueira, founder and CEO of TempoVip, on crafting a memorable itinerary that touches every part of Portugal.
OPPOSITE
Which of Portugal’s many regions and islands is your favorite to visit?
I love nature, but I also love comfort — so my heart is torn between Alentejo, in the southcentral mainland, and Madeira Island. These places are perfect for those who want to reconnect with nature and get away from the crowds in five-star luxury accommodations. There’s also the Algarve region in Portugal’s south, with one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, and the natural beauty of the Azores is so stunning that it will appeal to any nature enthusiast.
What part of Portugal is both extraordinary and underrated?
Food is integral to Portuguese culture and there are endless opportunities to indulge in the cuisine, from cooking classes with a countess in the Douro Valley, to dining in local houses in Porto, to salt-tasting in the Algarve and visiting an oyster farm on one of the islands. One standout experience I recommend is Xávega Art, where you can participate in the traditional Portuguese art of xávega fishing, followed by a hands-on cooking class using the day’s catch.
Danilo Cerqueira
TempoVip
Cerqueira got his start in travel with the tourism board of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, in 1993. He founded TempoVip in the early 2000s to deliver immersive Portuguese experiences to visitors and help them connect with the distinct qualities of each region.
What should visitors be sure to seek out in Portugal’s major cities, Porto and Lisbon?
These cities have a charm that captures your heart — every step you take reveals little cafés and narrow streets that seem to have frozen in time. In Lisbon, traditional shops like Livraria Bertrand in Chiado, one of the oldest bookstores in the world, and Luvaria Ulisses, a historic leather-glove shop, are part of modern life. And in Porto, we take visitors for a sunset dinner on one of the arches of Arrábida Bridge, where you can see evening set in over the entire city.

ABOVE
Soak in the jungle vibes at Cascada Lulu, a waterfall excursion in Samaná.
What surprises first-time visitors to the Dominican Republic?
There’s so much more than all-inclusive resorts here: We’ve got lush rainforests, stunning beaches, the Caribbean’s highest peak (Pico Duarte) as well as its lowest point (Lago Enriquillo). Adventure-seekers can hike to waterfalls, zip-line through jungles, surf along the north coast or explore the vibrant underwater world while snorkeling or diving along coral reefs. Tobacco, coffee, rum, bachata and merengue music, along with a rich, multicultural history all help define the Dominican identity — not to mention the spirit, warmth and hospitality of our people.
ABOVE, FROM TOP
If you had to pick just one place to show off the best of the Dominican Republic, where would it be?
Every region has its charm, but the Samaná Peninsula in the northeast stands out as one of the most enchanting destinations. Its breathtaking landscapes, pristine beaches — Bonvidó’s tour of three virgin beaches in Samaná brings guests to some of the world’s most incredible coastlines — and vibrant yet laid-back atmosphere combine for an unforgettable experience. I also adore the cuisine here, particularly dishes featuring coconut. Pescado al coco (fish in coconut milk) is a personal favorite.

Beloved band Grupo Bonyé performs every Sunday at the Ruinas del Monasterio de San Francisco in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, and locals and visitors gather to enjoy the live music and dance under the stars.
