Suites & Staterooms Ever since leisure travel and pleasure cruising began to boom in the 19th century, hotel suites and cruise ship staterooms have been designed to replicate the comforts of home. (The Waldorf Astoria in New York made huge progress on that front in 1897, when it became one of the first hotels to introduce ensuite bathrooms.) Today, where we stay is a key part of our travel experience, and the features we look for far surpass the existence of private lavatories, whether it’s the service of a butler or decor that immerses us in the culture of our destination. In this issue of Range Best, join us as we explore the suites and staterooms that transform the place where you lay your head into one of the most memorable parts of your journey. From now until September 2024, book a stay in the whimsical Barbie Dream Suite, which includes a swing set, vintage dolls, a disco ball and plenty of pink. Bring the Whole Family Aboard
Guests in Cunard’s Grill Suites can look forward to dishes from a Michelin-starred chef when they board the cruise liner’s newest ship, Queen Anne, setting sail in 2024. Chef Michel Roux, who earned two stars for his London restaurant Le Gavroche, is creating a new Gala Evening menu for the fine-dining restaurant Queens Grill, which is exclusive to Grill Suite guests.
Explora Journeys is making it easy for travelers to set sail with multiple generations in tow. On Explora I (now sailing) and Explora II (launching next year), 78 connecting suites keep family members close — and come with pint-sized amenities for little travelers, like bathrobes — while Nautilus Club provides kidfriendly entertainment, from video games to dedicated pool time and art sessions.

rom show-stopping views to palatial bathrooms, travelers staying in high-end suites and staterooms enjoy many luxurious perks, but no other amenity oozes opulence quite like a dedicated butler. Butlers provide personalized service for guests, assisting with everything from unpacking luggage to having a favorite drink at the ready each day. We sat down with three hotel and cruise butlers — Chokhoni, a butler for Silversea; Gabriela Bolaños, a hotel butler for La Casa de la Playa in Mexico’s Riviera Maya; and Shameer Ampopilakkil, head butler for Regent Seven Seas Cruises — to discover how they might make your next vacation your most memorable one yet.

Chokhoni BUTLER FOR SILVERSEA
How can guests get the most from their butler experience?
What’s a service you offer that guests might not know to ask for?
While butlers are trained to observe and anticipate guests’ needs, you can also let us know from the first day what your preferences are. If you like to have a cup of tea in your room before breakfast, we can automatically send it each morning. We also take care of unpacking your suitcase, make restaurant reservations and provide white tablecloth in-suite service.
We have a bath service where guests can select between one of three bath-salt fragrances and we’ll draw the bath for them, setting up candles, a pillow, bathrobe, slippers and a glass of champagne.
When it comes to everyday services, what do your guests really appreciate?
PHOTO: COURTESY OF SILVERSEA.
During room cleaning, we clean guests’ eyeglasses and sunglasses using a cloth and spray. We also clean and shine four different types of shoes: sneakers, suede shoes, patent leather and regular leather. When guests come onboard, we usually ask if they would like these services and will continue to provide them every day.

Gabriela Bolaños HOTEL BUTLER FOR LA CASA DE LA PLAYA
What’s the most unexpected request you’ve ever received?
What are some ways you take the guest experience to the next level?
One day, a guest asked me to take care of his pet monkey while he was gone. I was surprised; I’d never taken care of a monkey before. So I watched some videos online about how to care for them. The monkey was very playful — but a little mean if I didn’t play with him enough!
We love to surprise guests. If they let us know it’s their birthday, we might decorate their suite with balloons or send a gift to their room. If a guest tells us they got really sunburnt, we’ll place some aftersun in their suite. It’s all about anticipating their needs so that guests can relax and feel comfortable during their vacations.
Has a guest ever asked you to coordinate a special celebration, like a proposal? One guest wanted to propose to his girlfriend and gave me his grandmother’s ring to keep safe. He didn’t want to leave it in the room in case his girlfriend found it. We planned a private dinner for them at another Xcaret property and I brought the ring to that hotel. Thankfully, the proposal went smoothly and she said yes!

Shameer Ampopilakkil HEAD BUTLER FOR REGENT SEVEN SEAS CRUISES
Can you share a story about a time you went out of your way to help a guest?
How can butlers help guests enjoy their staterooms to the max?
One guest sailing with us had a liking for a specific brand of coffee. We notified one of the butlers who was not yet onboard and he went out of his way to find it at his local airport before joining the ship. The guest was delighted to see his favorite coffee in the room a few days later.
Butlers can tour staterooms with guests to deliver pieceby-piece know-how of the capabilities within their rooms, while also customizing the space to best suit their needs. We can place their most-used belongings within easy reach or learn their preferred temperature and light settings.
PHOTO: COURTESY OF REGENT SEVEN SEAS CRUISES.
Tell us about a notable experience you’ve had as a butler. I took care of a guest who had been diagnosed with cancer. His wife’s only request was to make sure he had a memorable cruise. Four years later, while in port in Miami, I got a call to come down to the gangway, where I was so surprised to see that same lovely couple waiting for me outside the ship. I was so happy to reconnect with them and learn that the husband was doing well.

The resort was designed by prominent Thai architect Boonlert Hemvijitraphan.
Nestled on the verdant banks of Thailand’s Ping River, Raya Heritage is a peaceful resort that pays homage to the local Lanna culture. Hotel interiors feature locally crafted ceramic tiles, mulberry-paper screens and textiles dyed with the leaves of the indigofera tinctoria plant, all evoking the tranquillity of northern Thai design. Experience a true taste of Thailand by sipping cocktails punched up with herbaceous Mekhong and Phraya rum or savoring steaming cups of tea brewed with flowers of the Payom tree. At the hotel spa, a herbal steam room is infused with lemongrass, acacia, ginger and kaffir lime leaves, while heated bamboo stems provide relaxation in a signature massage.

Organic materials like reclaimed wood, eucalyptus poles and puka lava stone are blended into the design of the rooms and common areas, ensuring you never feel far from the great outdoors. Connect with the island’s native flora at the resort spa, where facials using noni, an ancient Hawaiian medicinal plant, leave skin with a dewy glow.

Fogo Island Inn Depending on the time of year, a visit to Fogo Island Inn — located on a remote island off the coast of Newfoundland — might involve time-honored activities like foraging for marshberries, learning the craft of boatbuilding or participating in a beachfront seafood boil-up. The hotel building, which was designed by Newfoundland-born architect Todd Saunders, partially rests on wooden stilts — a practical feature seen on buildings throughout the island that provides stability on the rocky terrain. This rugged topography also inspires the inn’s angular structure, which mirrors the island’s craggy appearance. Inside, each room is filled with folksy interior touches that summon the heritage of the region, such as locally made quilts and juniper-wood chairs that nod to the structure of punt boats.

Set in a former monastery dating back to the 13th century, Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel offers an intimate perspective on Italy’s religious history through evocative architecture that includes curved loggia and rooms with vaulted ceilings. Serene gardens and lemon groves enhance the resort’s transportive atmosphere while also helping to shape its culinary program. Guest rooms are stocked with jars of candied lemon peel and marmalade made from the property’s abundance of lemon trees, while fresh herbs and tomatoes grown on site add local flavor to dishes served at Dei Cappuccini restaurant — including cannelloni, which was invented at the hotel in 1924. J
ean Reese and her husband had taken 31 cruises and, for cruise number 32, chose an epic, seven-day trip to Alaska. The couple from Maple Ridge, British Columbia, prefer seeing the world by ship because cruises provide a level of comfort that other modes of travel no longer can — especially for Jean, who uses a walker. “What appeals to me about cruising — particularly on the smaller ships — is the ease of getting around,” she says. Today’s cruise ships are increasingly being designed with accessibility in mind. Widened corridors, accessible staterooms and mobility-friendly features make cruising an appealing travel option that promises both inclusivity and adventure.

From the very beginning of their journeys, people with disabilities can typically take advantage of priority boarding and designated accessible gangways. Celebrity Cruises has upped the ante by creating the “Magic Carpet,” an innovative floating platform that moves around the ship from top to bottom for easier boarding. Some cruise lines, like Norwegian, offer oneon-one meetings with Access Officers onboard who can provide wheelchair assistance, answer questions about navigating the ship and generally make sure travelers’ needs are met. “From providing private safety drills to arranging in-room accommodations, such as hearing-impaired kits, seat risers and braille communications, the Access Officer is a guest’s primary point of contact dedicated to providing them an inclusive cruise experience,” says Mark Kansley, senior vice-president, hotel operations at Norwegian Cruise Line. Accessibly designed staterooms often feature spacious layouts, easy-to-reach amenities and bathrooms equipped with grab bars and rollin showers. Princess Cruises offers a wearable device that allows for touchless stateroom entry,

automatically unlocking the door as guests approach. And accessible staterooms on some Silversea ships have wheelchair-friendly balconies. When it comes to amenities, most ships feature accessible swimming pools with lifts and theaters with designated seating. Assisted Listening Devices are available in theaters on many Norwegian ships, along with a pager that will transmit PA announcements for hearing-impaired guests. A number of ships have also introduced features to help travelers with disabilities disembark to explore ports of call. Holland America Line vessels, for example, have elevators running to the access points for tenders, or small boats, that transport passengers to shore at some ports. For Jean, these advancements give her the freedom to cruise on her own terms, whether that means joining her husband on a shore excursion or enjoying a solo day on the ship. Jean says that a quiet day reading in one of the cozy stateroom libraries or chatting leisurely with new friends is often her ideal day onboard. Weeks after their Alaskan cruise, Jean and her husband are already planning their next voyage: a trip from Los Angeles to Mexico next spring.

Ask Your Ensemble Travel Advisor Diana Reuling in Kissimmee, Florida, shares three questions to ask your advisor when planning an accessible trip.
1
“ What is the level of accessibility on the ship and at the destination?” Inquire about wheelchairaccessible entrances, adapted rooms, accessible bathrooms and any other amenities that may be essential for your specific needs.
2
“ What do I need to bring?” You don’t necessarily have to lug all your equipment with you. Companies like Special Needs at Sea or Scootaround will take care of items like oxygen, bed hoists, raised toilet seats, powerchairs, scooters or walkers and have them delivered directly to your stateroom.
3
“ What accessible activities and excursions are available?” Consider arranging private excursions in advance: Advisors can help with navigating an accessible-van rental or arranging for alternative routes if your excursion destination is not accessible.
