Teens of Rare Animals Seized by BKSDA Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Officials of Conservation Agency of Natural Resources (BKSDA) could capture the smuggling of rare animals protected by government. Teens of rare animals that would be sent to Japan consisted of 12 eagles, 3 owls, 1 civet cat and some other birds. Four alleged smugglers of protected animal were arrested at the office of BKSDA, Jalan Suwung Batan Kendal, South Denpasar. “These four smugglers are under investigation at the office of BKSDA,” said Chief Unit of Quick Action Forest Police, Made Astra Wijaya, Friday (Oct 2).

Anticipating Terrorist Attack

It was said that the four smugglers comprised a seller, an owner and two couriers from Java. They were captured in a boarding house on Jalan Pulau Adi VI No. 21 C, Denpasar. “Previously, we have carried out a surveillance for two days,” stated Astra Wijaya.

BKSDA officials received information that there would be a smuggling of rare animals protected by government through air transport. “We got information that some rare animas would be sent to Japan through Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban,” he explained. Such information was then followed up. Control at Ngurah Rai was made more intensive. Other officials searched for information at location. He said the investigation gave satisfying result. Boarding house belonging to one of the couriers could be traced. “It made us spend the night around the location of frisking,” he said.

The four doers frisked were Tolib, Amir, Lukman and another courier.

They were captured at 07:30 Local Time and teens of rare animals were seized. “They just arrived from Java Island by truck and reached location around 07:00 Local Time and we frisked and captured them,” he revealed.

According to Astra Wijaya, the smuggling of these rare animals was the second time. The first one was successful. Its modus operandi was unique where the smuggled animals were put inside a handbag. “I regretted the matter. Strongly alleged, there was cooperation with security officer of the Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban,” he added.

In the meantime, according to the doers those animals would be sold to Japanese guests identified as Nauki and his friend. Allegedly, both Japanese guests remained to stay in Bali.

“We are still pursuing both Japanese guests. Related to their price, we do not get information how much they will be sold,” he described. (kmb21)

Today, Denpasar authority intensively performs sudden inspection to regional migrants to minimize the existence of population having no identity. Sudden inspection in South Denpasar, Thursday (Oct 1) night, was carried out integratively targeting Antap Hamlet, Panjer Village. Three residents having no identity were snared on that control.

Head of South Denpasar sub district, IB Alit Wiradana, who was present on that occasion, revealed that the endeavor was meant to create Denpasar having neat demographic system.

“Through sudden inspection like this we expect all residents existing in Denpasar to have ID card because it is very important for an individual,” said former Head of Sanur Village.

Alit Wiradarma appealed all residents in order they could complete themselves with ID card. Moreover,

such control operation would be performed continuously and sustainably.

“This operation could run flourishingly because of good cooperation delivered by local residents and related apparatus,” he said.

Besides, the Head of sub district also appealed the owners of boarding house to report their dwellers as soon as possible. Nyepi Segara in Nusa Penida

Late Information, Ship’s Owners Protest Semarapura (Bali Post)—

In connection with ritual procession at Penataran Ped Temple, Nusa Penida, Saturday (Oct 3), it was resumed with Nyepi Segara or Day of Silence at Sea, on Sunday (Oct 4) starting from 06:00 Local Time through 06:00 Local Time, Monday (Oct 05). Concerning with the procession, entire community, particularly owner of crossing ship, were not allowed to operate their ships from and to the waters of Nusa Penida.

However, some protests by ferry ship’s owners came into being recently. One of them was by Ketut Mahardika, owner of cruise ship BH providing services to guests to cross Lembongan Island, Nusa Penida. Mahardika protested because he received the notification late. Meanwhile, his guests have booked a month before. “In previous years, we received the notification a month in advance.

This year, we just received it two days before the activity,” he said.

Due to such cancellation, many guests complained to him where most of them were European.

For Sunday (Oct 4), at least 250 guests have made reservation for crossing to Lembongan. However, due to the organization of Day of Silence at Sea, the crossing was cancelled. “Our guests got angry,” he said while admitted to inflict a loss of USD 90 per gust due to

such cancellation.

Mahardika blamed the Office of Cultural and Tourism Services due to its late notification. He judged the authority did not respond the matter accordingly. “It does not mean that I do not appreciate such ritual procession. But, I want this experience would be made into a learning by the authority so it would not occur again in years to come,” he expected.

No officials of Klungkung Office of Cultural and Tourism Services were ready to give clarification related to that matter. They did not obtain any mandate from the Head of Klungkung Office of Cultural and Tourism Services, Nengah Wijana, who was in overseas journey at that time.

Meanwhile, the Head of Organizing Committee of the Ritual Procession, Wayan Pedoman, has sent notification letter to Klungkung Regent Wayan Candra, with carbon copy sent to the Office of Cultural and Tourism Services and related authorities like port officer, village head and others dated September 18, 2009. The committee asked the regent and related authorities to announce the organization of Day of Silence at Sea to related parties.

Such ritual was meant as an appreciation to the Lord Varuna in order the community of Nusa Penida whose livelihood at sea could obtain abundant fortunes. (kmb20)

People’s Appreciation to Batik Remains Low Gianyar (Bali Post)—

At the end, Batik cloth of Indonesia was entered into the 76 world heritages by UNESCO. It was expected that the image of batik in Indonesia would revive again. One of the hand-made batik makers in Gianyar, Cokorda Agung Pemayun delivered the expectation from Intaran Hamlet, Pejeng, Tampaksiring, Friday (Oct 2).

According to him, government was necessary to keep on encouraging and awakening the people’s appreciation to Indonesian batik.

The love on the use of domestic products, he added, had a great impact, to not only its makers but also the economy in general.

It was said that policy of government in preserving indigenous wisdom was very positive and should be continued constantly. “It is not only acknowledged by the world, but it needs an affinity to Indonesian products,” he explained.

By such endorsement, he confessed he got many requests from hotels to organize exhibitions.

However, when he made site in-

spection, it seemed to have no a good appreciation to batik makers, as done by a hotel where Cok Agung was reluctant to mention the name.

As mentioned, real condition of local market for printing batik was relatively small than that of overseas market searching for the existence of printing batik. The maker and entrepreneur employing 76 artisans said most of his orders came from Japan, Malaysia and Europe. “They much more appreciated our traditional works. Moreover, when the batik is made by machine today. Of course, it will take out the traditional image of our printing batik handicraft having a particular artistic value and culture of our own,” he added.

On the one hand, the products of hand batik has far different price from that of made by machine. Indeed, the hand made batik is more expensive than the machine-made batik. Three Amusement Centers in Kuta to be Closed, Including Vi Ai Pi Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Justiciary team led by Civil Servant Unit Police (Satpol PP) of Badung, eventually performed the closure and sealing toward a number of amusement centers having no permit in Kuta area.

Friday (Oct 2), Satpol PP closed three amusement centers namely Vi Ai Pi, Lanai Restaurant and Crusoe’s Land. Such closure drew public attention of Legian and its surroundings. Teens or even tens of apparatus looked to guard around such locations. The happening could run flourishingly enough without significant resistance from the owner or management.

Nevertheless, at Vi Ai Pi for instance, closure of that amusement premises made its employees shocked. They could only keep silent and looked unhappy on seeing the apparatus closing their business premises. The management itself admitted to be disappointed due to government’s attitude judged sluggish in the matter of permit.

Chief Unit of Satpol PP of Badung Regency, I Wayan Adi Arnawa, said that such closure and sealing of the business premises because up to that moment those business premises have not

had any permit. According to him, the owners have been reprimanded to complete their permit but they never did it.

Still related to the closure, Satpol PP of Badung Regency has sent reprimand letter including briefings. However, since the measures were not noticed so the closure should be carried out.

“We’d like to express our gratitude because Vi Ai Pi has shown its cooperation by closing the bar by itself,” he said.

In the meantime, representative of Vi Ai Pi, Anggara, confessed to regret the attitude of Badung Gov-

ernment. His party actually has had some permits ranging from Building Permit, Environmental Management Endeavor (UKL), Environmental Monitoring Endeavor (UPL) and other permits. However, up to that moment, his proposal was not processed and such condition made his business premises illegal.

In addition, the permit management had indication to have been handed over to provincial authority. As a result, his party appointed an advocate to investigate the stagnancy of permit process. “Why are we made difficult in this matter?” he complained. (ded)

Japan’s ex-finance minister Nakagawa found dead

TOKYO - Former Japanese finance minister Shoichi Nakagawa, who was forced to resign over his apparently drunken behaviour at a meeting of world powers, has been found dead at his home, police said Sunday.

“We will soon conduct an autopsy and specify the cause of his death,” said a spokeswoman for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.

Nakagawa, 56, was lying face down on a bed at his home in Tokyo’s residential district of Setagaya when his wife found him early Sunday, Jiji Press news agency and other local media reported.

They said that no suicide note was discovered, and there was no suggestion of foul play. The re-

ports said he had been dead for up to eight hours before he was found.

Nakagawa, a close ally of then prime minister Taro Aso, was incoherent and slurred his speech at a news conference in February after the Group of Seven talks in Rome amid the global economic crisis.

A heavyweight in the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Nakagawa said he had sipped some wine with lunch before the press conference but blamed jet lag and cold medicine for his drowsiness.

“I’m too shocked to think of any words to say,” Aso was quoted by public broadcaster NHK as saying after hearing the news.

“As finance minister and state minister for finance services, he backed the Aso administration with his outstanding ability as we were tackling the financial crisis,” he said. “I offer my condolences.”

The debacle dealt a blow to Aso, who resigned last month after his conservative LDP suffered a massive defeat against Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama’s Democratic Party of Japan in general elections in August.

Nakagawa, who had made no secret about his fondness for drinking, promised to swear off alcohol ahead of the elections, but lost his seat in his rural constituency in Hokkaido, northern Japan.

“I have no power anymore,” a disappointed Nakagawa told his supporters following the poll. “But I want to return your favour,” he added, hinting at running for a future election.

DILI - East Timor’s deputy prime minister abused his power by securing a plum United Nations job for his wife in which she was overpaid thousands of dollars, a leaked ombudsman’s report alleges.

The July 9 report by East Timor’s Ombudsman Sebastiao Ximenes, obtained by AFP, recommends an investigation be opened into Jose Luis Guterres over allegations that he improperly gave his wife, Ana Maria Valerio, a job as counsel to the UN ambassador in New York in 2006.

Guterres’s actions were “an abuse of power, and breached the applicable laws resulting in irregularities and prejudice to the state in favour of the family,” the report said.

“This conduct amounts to acts of collusion and nepotism,” it said.

Appointees should be career diplomats who have worked through various lower-level posts, “prerequisites Ana Maria Valerio did not fulfill,” the damning report said.

The alleged abuse of power in-

cluded the leader’s wife being overpaid about 12,000 dollars in housing allowances reserved only for East Timorese diplomats and citizens working overseas who don’t have homes, according to the report.

Guterres was appointed as East Timor’s ambassador to the United States in 2002 before becoming the country’s ambassador to the UN. He returned to East Timor in 2006 to take up the post of foreign minister, but before he left, he gave his wife her new job, breaking a number of anti-corruption laws in the process, the report says.

Current Foreign Minister Zacarias Albano da Costa was also accused in the report of failing to “immediately (stop) these payments to Ana Maria Valerio... after he took office in 2007.”

Ombudsman Ximenes has passed the report to East Timor’s prosecutor general. In August, opposition Fretilin party lawmakers called for Justice Minister Lucia Lobato and Finance Minister Emilia Pires to be sacked after a report by Ximenes alleged abuse of power by the pair.

100,000 protest for press freedom in Rome Agence France-Presse

ROME - More than 100,000 people rallied for press freedom in Rome’s central square on Saturday, protesting that scandal-plagued Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi wants to muzzle the media.

“Berlusconi is bad for Italy’s health,” read one banner emulating warnings on cigarette packets at the demonstration organised by the Italian Press Federation, opposition groups and left-wing trades unionists at Piazza del Popolo.

The square was packed with protesters holding green, white and red balloons in the colours of Italy’s flag.

Another banner read, “we are all scoundrels”, a term Berlusconi used to describe some TV journalists.

“We ask the prime minister to stop the campaign of accusations against journalists and to tell the truth,” Franco Siddi, head of the Italian Press Federation, told the crowd.

Organisers said 350,000 took part in the protest, while city authorities put the figure at 60,000. AFP correspondents estimated the crowd in the square at more than 100,000.

The protest comes after months of revelations about Berlusconi’s private life spurred the prime minister cum media tycoon to file a series of lawsuits against newspapers in Italy, France and Spain.

His supporters have also called on Italians to stop paying their public television viewing fees.

Il Giornale, a newspaper belonging to the Berlusconi family’s media empire Mediaset, recently fumed: “On Rai (public TV), it’s anti-Berlusconism seven days a week,” Mediaset also owns three private TV stations while the government has de facto control over Rai. ROME - The Italian company Fininvest, which is controlled by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, has been sentenced to pay 750 million euros to its rival media group CIR in a long-running legal dispute, the ANSA news agency reported Saturday.

Milan’s civil court ruled that the CIR holding company of Carlo De Benedetti was entitled to 749.995 million euros (1.093 billion dollars) in compensation for Fininvest destroying the value of its stake in Mondadori, Italy’s leading publishing house.

Marina Berlusconi, the head of Fininvest and the daughter of the

prime minister, announced the company would appeal the court decision.

The case dates from 1990, when Fininvest, then headed by the prime minister, wrestled control of Mondadori from De Benedetti.

De Benedetti welcomed the court’s ruling, saying “it established in an irrevocable fashion the illegal behavior” of Fininvest.

TAGUIG - Two million people living around a huge lake east of the Philippine capital could spend Christmas with their homes partly submerged, after slapdash development left floodwaters nowhere to go.

The mish-mash of farms, shantytowns, housing developments, factories and tourist resorts around Laguna de Bay remain swamped with muddy water following the September 26 floods which killed nearly 300 people in and around Manila.

The area around the lake has six million residents and 2.2 million of them live in districts that could stay flooded for three months, according to Edgardo Manda, head of the government’s Laguna Lake Development Authority.

Lacking a modern sewerage system, much of the sprawling area’s runoff, trash and liquid pollution goes into the lake. Manda advised people in the flooded areas to relocate, warning some may be forced to move if they don’t go voluntarily.

However, Lorenzo Cruz and his family — who are among the last rice farmers in the narrow band of marshes in Taguig city between the lake’s western shore and metro Manila — have little choice but to stay.

Cruz, 42, his wife and one of their children are living in a half-submerged home made of corrugated iron roof sheets and plywood walls to protect their pigs and ward off burglars.

They are sleeping in beds on makeshift platforms that barely keep them above the water, while wooden palettes in the pigpen keep their five hogs from drowning.

“When we’re asleep rats crawl all over us,” he said. “The pigs are better off.”

Cruz, like many in the area’s older communities who rely on fishing and farming, is angry about the new housing, roads and other development that critics say have worsened the flooding.

“Ever since they built them, the floods have gotten worse because the catchment areas were lost,” he said, gesturing at a row of peach-coloured apartment units and a bridge across the mouth of the Napindan river.

The Cruz family now paddle around home and above their rice fields on an improvised styrofoam raft.

Throughout the water-logged region, there are other remarkable signs of a new way of life as people try to adapt to lives on water.

Some boats are parked in what used to be driveways.

In submerged houses, most of the furniture and appliances that can be moved have been hauled to the second floor, while chickens, including expensive fighting cocks, roost on rooftops.

Residents of houses with no upper floors have nailed wooden palettes against the wall to keep their beds off the water.

Some women wash clothes by hand in submerged living rooms, balancing on tall chairs and benches, while naked children cavort on the streets, which they

use as impromptu swimming pools.

But as the crisis drags on, garbage is piling up in giant plastic containers on street corners.

There is no electricity and, with toilets blocked for over a week, residents giggle or blush when asked how they relieve themselves.

Trucks deliver tap water to the outskirts of the area, which residents put into plastic jugs that they bring home using boats and other flotation devices.

Authorities now admit that chaotic urban planning, or no planning at all, has aggravated the Laguna flood debacle.

“Our problem is we live where we should never have lived,” said Bayani Fernando, head of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, which is in charge of flood control, sanitation and traffic.

Migrants as well as businesses have encroached riverbanks, impeding natural drainage, he said.

But Gerry Balinas, a 40-year-old used car parts dealer whose shanty home was flooded, said informal settlers near Laguna had nowhere else to go.

Balinas said he uprooted his family of five from the rebellion-torn southern island of Mindanao 11 years ago.

“We had no jobs and no future there,” he added.

“Now, if they want this area cleared, we are willing to leave as long as they give us new houses elsewhere.”

MANINGRIDA - As Aboriginal sea ranger Dion Cooper’s patrol boat cuts through Australia’s northern waters, he maintains a running commentary about what seems a featureless blue expanse.

Off the port bow is a breeding ground for dugongs, the slow-moving sea cows still hunted by Aborigines in the Northern Territory, further on, a spot where traps have been laid to snare a five metre (16.4 foot) crocodile.

“He’s a crafty one,” Cooper says with a laugh, his voice barely audible over the roar of the outboard motor. “We haven’t got him yet, keeps giving us the slip.”

But Cooper turns serious as his open-topped aluminium craft approaches a submerged reef where an Indonesian fishing vessel ran aground about three years ago.

“It was stuck, they couldn’t get away that time,” he says.

Cooper is a sea ranger off the Northern Territory’s Arnhem Land, part of an effort by authorities to use indigenous know-how to curb illegal fishing in the remote area.

Under a pilot programme, Australian Customs and Northern Territory Fisheries have contracted the Djelk Aboriginal people to patrol a 2,000 square kilometre (772 square mile) area of water off their traditional coastal lands.

About 30 rangers using six boats conduct daily patrols looking for illegal foreign fishing vessels and Australian commercial fishing boats not authorised to be in the area.

“A few years ago we would see them everywhere,” Cooper said of the foreign vessels, which mainly seek shark fins for Asian markets.

Djelk ranger coordinator Shaun Ansell said the poachers used “incredibly destructive” fishing methods, including gill nets which indiscriminately scour the ocean and long lines that ensnare bird life.

“It was very distressing for our rangers to come across this massive waste of the resources that we all depend on around here,” Ansell said.

He said that the Djelk rangers’ patrols for Customs had been an outstanding success, with the number of foreign fishing vessels sighted in the area falling to zero shortly after they began three years

ago.

“It’s been a great partnership between the Djelk and Customs,” he said.

“Customs get local guys who know the area intimately, they’re out there day to day keeping a really close eye on what’s going on — they can detect things in an area where the Australian government can’t put resources on a large scale.”

While large Customs ships still conduct weekly sweeps on the high seas, Ansell said his rangers came into their own in the shallower coastal waters most often targeted by maritime poachers.

“We’ve got the local knowledge and the boats and the skill to get out there into the coastal environment, into all the small creeks where the (illegal) boats go and hide,” he said.

The Djelk rangers have also proved successful against Australian commercial fishing vessels exceeding their quotas or operating in sacred Aboriginal sites, assisting in three successful prosecutions in the past year.

The rangers do not have the power to arrest or apprehend illegal fishers but use high-tech equipment on their patrol boats to immediately report poachers to authorities and then shadow their movements to ensure they do not escape.

They also monitor the coast for crocodiles, relocationg them to uninhabited areas where possible, as well as collecting debris such as nets and driftwood discarded by foreign ships that could harbour exotic pests.

Ansell said if the pilot programme was expanded to other indigenous communities it would give Customs a cost-effective way of protecting Australia’s vast northern coastline.

“There’s the potential there to create a web of surveillance right across the remote north,” he said.

It also gives local Aborigines such as Dion Cooper full-time work in an area where jobs are scarce and allows them to protect waters their ancestors have fished for thousands of years.

“I get to go out on patrol and after we do that I sometimes have time for fishing,” he said.

“It’s the best job in the world and I get to do it every day.”

JAKARTA - A 5.5-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia on Sunday, centred in the far east of the country about 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) from the Sumatra quake disaster zone, seismologists said.

The quake, which Indonesian seismologists had put at a magnitude of 6.1, hit West Papua province

at 12:36 am local time (0336 GMT) at a depth of 39 kilometres, 128 kilometres northwest of the provin-

cial capital of Manokwari, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

On Wednesday, a powerful 7.6-

magnitude quake rocked Sumatra Island in the west of the country, burying thousands and devastating the city of Padang and surrounding villages.

Indonesian geophysics agency technical head Suharjono told AFP there were no immediate reports of injuries in West Papua.

“The earthquake in Papua has nothing to do with that in Sumatra. The tectonic plates in both incidents are different,” he said.

Earthquakes are common in Indonesia, which sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates converge.

PADANG - Rescuers held out scant hope Sunday for Indonesian quake survivors, handing recovery teams the grim task of retrieving the decaying bodies of some 4,000 victims believed buried in rubble.

More international rescue teams arrived with sniffer dogs and specialist equipment on the fourth day after the 7.6-magnitude quake, with large areas still unexplored. But few experts expected to pluck out people alive.

In Padang, a vast team dug at the Ambacang hotel, a focus for rescue efforts, where hopes had been raised for survivors on Saturday after police received a mobile text message supposedly from someone inside.

“I think the chances of finding survivors are very slim,” the team leader of Newmont Emergency Rescue Team, Samsubin, told AFP at the scene of the ruined Dutch colonial-era hotel.

“We are taking an aggressive approach today to remove about 140 bodies that we believe are buried near the swimming pool.”

Jack hammers and excavators worked over the huge pile of concrete, metal rods and debris which

has drawn large crowds despite the clouds of dust and lingering smell of decomposition.

Outside of Padang, the scale of the disaster is only now being discovered. Desperate villagers complained to AFP reporters that they were being neglected while the focus remained on Padang.

Whole villages northwest of Padang were found obliterated after giant landslides buried houses and hundreds of people. One local official put the death toll in one area at about 600.

The dead outside Padang included an entire wedding party of 30 people swept away in an avalanche of mud and rock.

“Today the military will be heading to landslide areas which we have not been able to access earlier because roads are closed and broken,” Indonesian military spokesman Sagom Tamboen told AFP. The mayor of Padang, Fauzi Bahar, said that only 60 percent of affected areas in West Sumatra had been accessed by emergency teams, adding that more equipment was needed given the scale of the task.

He said people were “traumatised”

in his city, which now faces a colossal rebuilding task.

“Some of the residents had spent 15 years saving money to build their houses and they’re gone with a blink of an eye,” he said.

Countries from around the world have rushed aid and rescue teams to the scene and international aid groups are ramping up efforts to provide housing, medical services and basics such as food and water.

Teams from Australia, Britain, Japan, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and the United States have arrived or are travelling to the scene to help overwhelmed and exhausted locals.

Australia sent a warship carrying a full medical team while France dispatched two aircraft carrying humanitarian assistance experts and 25 tonnes of relief supplies.

Both the United Nations and the Red Cross estimate that about 4,000 people were trapped when the quake struck in the early evening of Wednesday.

The government death toll, which has not been revised since Thursday, stands at around 800.

JAKARTA - Some superstitious Indonesians are blaming a supposedly “unlucky” president — and not shifting tectonic plates — for the latest earthquake in this disaster-prone country.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, popularly known by his initials SBY, has long been burdened by murmurs that he carries with him the shadow of cosmic misfortune.

A string of disasters both natural and man-made since his election in 2004, including the Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 220,000 across Asia, has seen quips that SBY stands for “Selalu Bencana Ya”, roughly meaning “Always A Disaster”.

The latest catastrophe, believed to have killed upwards of 1,100 people with another buried 4,000 under rubble, is viewed by many in this Muslim-majority country of 234 million as yet more proof that SBY’s stars are crossed.

“SBY, because of his birth date, will always attract disasters to this country, according to the Primbon (a Javanese almanac of mysticism)” Permadi, a veteran politician from the opposition Gerindra party and practising shaman, told AFP. “Just look at the numbers of his birth date — the ninth of the ninth, ’49 — that’s unlucky. The more he holds on to power, the more great disasters will happen,” he said.

If Yudhoyono stays president, “a much bigger disaster will strike Jakarta for sure,” Permadi said, referring to the Indonesian capital.

“If SBY had a big heart, he would step down.”

Not everyone believes this theory — and many see SBY’s birthday as enviably lucky — but such talk of supernatural misfortune has deep resonance in Indonesia, where Islam and Christianity are for many merged with older traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism and animism.

The criticism has been long-standing enough that Yudhoyono lectured local government heads in the quake-hit region of West Sumatra two years ago that they should blame the region’s volatile geology, and not him.

“Magma doesn’t move because SBY has become president. It’s malicious to link it to me being president,” he was quoted as saying at the time.

Even the Jakarta Post, one of the top-selling English dailies, suggested a link between the disaster and the extravagance of politicians in a Sunday editorial entitled “The Gods Must Be Angry”.

“Whether you subscribe to the theological or secular explanation, the 7.6-magnitude quake that killed more than 1,100 people came on the eve of the multi-billion-rupiah inauguration ball for newly elected members of the House of Representatives and the Regional Representative Council in Jakarta,” it said.

Political analyst Bima Arya Sugiarto said that while some, particularly opposition politicians, try to paint the president as a spiritual liability, there are benefits for him in Indonesians’ gaze beyond the physical world.

Criticism of the often slow aid response, and the poor planning that allowed shoddy buildings to spring up in the first place, has been muted by fatalism and a widespread belief that the disaster is God’s will, Sugiarto said.

Indonesian media have carried accounts of divine symbols in the aftermath of the quake, including a ring-shaped sun surrounded by a rainbow and God’s name inscribed in Arabic calligraphy in the clouds.

In the devastated city of Padang, a commonly heard refrain has been that the quake is a test, or a punishment, ordained by God. “I think the quake happened because many of the youths in Padang commit sins, especially during Ramadan,” chicken-feed factory worker Yasrizat, 36, said near a mosque in the city.

“They’ve been engaging in sinful activities by the beach. I think God is punishing us with this quake.”

Garuda provides extra flights to Padang Antara

DENPASAR - National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is providing extra flights to Padang City, West Sumatra, to accommodate the need of people who have relatives who became victims in Wednesday’s earthquake.

Garuda General Manager for Bali Bagus Y Siregar said here on Friday that Garuda had added extra flights to the West Sumatra province since Thursday, October 1, 2009.

“The extra flights serve passengers from Soekarno-Hatta airport in Cengkarng to Padang with Airbus A330 aircraft with seating capacity for 260,” Seiregar, who was accompanied

by Garuda Spokesman for Bali Wayan Supatra Yasa, said.

He said based on Garuda’s schedules the flights with GA-1602 would depart from Jakarta to Padang at 1 pm and arrive in Padang at 2.4 pm while GA-1612 would depart from Padang at 3.40 pm and arrive in Jakarta at 7.20 pm.

Siregar said that the price of Garuda ticket to Padang was decided

at a medium rate while the ticket price for the return flights from Padang to Jakarta was set at Rp50,000, excluding fuel surcharge and tax.

In Jakarta, Vice President Jusuf Kalla has ordered the Transportation Ministry to take action against airlines that had raised ticket prices for flights to earthquake-battered West Sumatra province.

“I have ordered (the ministry of transportation) to find those raising ticket prices and to take action against them,” the vice president said after conducting Friday prayers.

It was reported earlier that a number of airlines had raised the price of their tickets for flights from Jakarta to Padang more than three-fold so that a one-way ticket could cost as much as Rp3 million.

The vice president said that the ticket prices could have been raised by ticket brokers. “I summoned the president director (Emirsyah Satar) of Garuda Indonesia last night and asked him whether it was true that there were ticket price hikes,” the vice president said.

Balinese Culture Kehen Temple, Bangli

Gebog Domas as the Responsible Clan Kehen Temple is situated on a small hill side in northern part of Bangli at Pekuwon sub village, Cempaga Village, Bangli Regency about 45 Km from Denpasar. This great temple in the middle of Bangli stores several essential inscriptions declared as an Indonesian cultural heritage.

How long has Kehen Temple existed? According to Bendesa (village responsible person) of Cempaga Village, I Nyoman Resiyasa, it’s hard to predict the temple’s existence. Obviously, Bangli’s history began and basically adopted Kehen inscriptions on the 10th of May 1204. “It means, that Kehen Temple had existed long before,” adding that the temple underwent renovation in 1917, after an earthquake demolished it.

called Mekel Bulakan, or Jero Mangku of Kehen Tehen said, there are 113 shrines existing around Kehen Temple. However, the main shrine is in the shape of Meru Tumpang Solas (eleven leveled shrine). On the left side of this Meru exists other shrines in line called Puncak Yang Ukir, Hyang Puserin Jagat, Betara Sanghyang Pujung Sari, Bhatara Gunung Tengah, Bhatara Gunung Koloka, Bhatara Gede Sema, Bhatara Tamansari, Bhatara Ratu Penyarikan, Bhatara Ratu Pasek Tugu and Bhatara Ratu Pasek Majembul.

Whilst on the right side there are other shrines such as Bhatara Ngurah Agung, Bhatara Gunung Agung, Bhatara Manik Tirtha, Bhatara Ratu Maspahit, Bhatara Ratu Gede Pande and Bhatara Ratu Pande Madura all sited at the main temple area (utama mandala) with a further ten dif-

ferent also located at Jaba Duwur and Jaba Sisi.

It was explained that historically the responsible clan/society of Kehen Temple is Gebog Domas (domas means eight hundred), which means the people who occupy 800 karang ayahan (dwelling land) and bebanoan spread within Bangli and surrounding areas.

Gebog Domas, Bebanoan (supporting people) and also pakaseh/subak members around the temple’s area will be responsible on any ceremonial execution, temple’s maintenance under the coordination of the Jero Gede, Kehen Temple.

The feast day ceremony of Kehen Temple falls every 210 days, Buda Kliwon Shinta (27 July 2005), whilst the Ngusaba ritual is carried out once in every 3 years, on Purnama Sasih Kelima (BTN/Suka)

(Clear Tripe Soup) Overview: This is usually served with sambel tomat as a contrasting condiment. The sugar cane is used to help soften the tripe rather than to add any sweetness to the soup.

Ingredients: 600 gr beef tripe, cleaned and washed well 3 liter water 1 liter beef stock 1 cup beef spice paste 5 cm sugar can stem, split lengthwise (optional) 2,5 cm ginger, peeled and sliced lengthwise 4 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 1 tbsp distilled white vinegar 200 gr giant white radish, peeled and diced in 1 cm cubes 5 sprigs celery leaf chipped 1 tbsp fried shallots Preparation: Rinse tripe well under running water until very clean.

Bring water to boil in a large pan, add tripe and simmer until soft approx 1 hour.

Strain water and cool tripe in ice water. Cut in pieces approx 2,5 cm x 1cm. Bring beef, beef spice paste, sugar cane, ginger, garlic and vinegar to boil. Add tripe and radish. Simmer until vegetables are soft. Garnish with celery leaf and fried shallots.

Helpful hints: Any type of summer squash or Chinese winter melon can be used instead of giant white radish (Japanese daikon). BUSINESS Asian textiles no longer a fading industry Agence France-Presse

SINGAPORE - Asian textiles, once considered a fading industry, are now showing strong growth prospects thanks to technology and demand from expanding middle classes, a leading industry player said.

Known in the past for back-alley shops churning out cheap material, many Asian firms are shedding their sweatshop image as they move to compete in the global market, said Paul Hulme, president of Huntsman Textile Effects (HTE).

Stricter environmental standards required by Western countries are also prompting consolidation and innovation in the industry, said Hulme, whose firm is one of the world’s top suppliers of textile dyes and chemicals.

It moved its headquarters from Basel, Switzerland to Singapore in March to be closer to its Asian customer base.

“These sweatshops and poor facilities — that is changing,” Hulme told AFP in an interview at the company’s corporate offices overlooking Singapore’s central business district.

“When I visit our customers, I’m impressed with the facilities in terms of the equipment, in terms of the housekeeping standards and the way they treat their employees,” he said.

“I would not pretend that sweatshops don’t exist and I’m sure you can go to parts of India and China where that very much is the case... But I think that image will change.”

A key driver for the industry’s modernisation is Asia’s growing middle class, whose clothing tastes are becoming more sophisticated.

Hulme said the global textile dyes and chemicals market is worth 16 billion dollars, and Asia accounts for some 45 percent of the total consumption, much of it destined for export markets outside the region.

One year after the global financial crisis exploded, Asian economies are rebounding faster than the West, boosting the textile industry’s hopes.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) recently upgraded its forecast for the region’s 2009 economic growth to 3.9 percent. China is forecast to grow 8.2 percent this year

“The market is changing, customer taste and demand is changing. For example, as you go into the provinces in China, the spending power is increasing,” said Hulme.

“In this business, the future is in Asia. It’s going to be driven from Asia, not from Europe and America,” said Hulme. “You’ve got to be part of the region.”

China, Bangladesh and India are the world’s top textile producers and are also major consumers.

Pakistan and Southeast Asia are important and growing players as well.

HTE is moving to further gain market share after sales totalled one billion dollars in 2008.

The company’s patented products give fabrics used in clothing and industrial materials such as car seats and garden parasols special properties like sharper, deeper and more lasting colours.

They can also make clothing resistant to ultra-violet rays and easier to wash, requiring less use of environmentally polluting detergents.

“We supply the colours and also the special effects,” said Rohit Aggarwal, global vice president for apparel and home textiles at HTE. “You may have something that is wrinkle-free, something which is very soft.”

Holding up a China-made Tshirt, Aggarwal said: “This one uses a type of chemical that allows the fabric to breathe. You don’t get

the sweat coming out, but you still get the fresh air going into your body.”

Apart from apparel, a major driver for the industry is demand for “technical textiles” or fabrics used in cars, mattress covers, bags, tents and parachutes, among others, Hulme said.

Car fabrics that do not fade easily even in extreme heat enhance the vehicle’s resale value, and there is rising demand for fireresistant materials in the construction sector as well, he said.

In the medical field, chemicals are incorporated in surgeons’ gowns to repel blood and dirt, raising the hygiene level.

HTE spends about four percent of its total annual sales for research and development, according to Hulme.

Its dye production is carried out in facilities in India, Thailand, China, Switzerland and Mexico.

Textile chemicals are produced from factories in Germany and China.

As Asia’s spending power rises, “people want to buy different products and that’s going to lead to the development of a whole new market for technical textiles which didn’t exist before,” said Hulme.

The market for technical textiles is likely to grow by 20 percent per year over the next decade, he said, urging Asian firms to ride the growth by moving up to higher value-added products.

US economic decline forges new world order Agence France-Presse

ISTANBUL - The crisis is redrawing the world map of economic power as the influence of US consumer spending declines and major emerging markets like China and India take the lead, finance chiefs said.

“One of the legacies of this crisis may be a recognition of changed economic power relations,” World Bank president Robert Zoellick said Friday in Istanbul ahead of annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

“Recent forecasts show that China and India are helping to pull the global economy out of recession.... A multipolar economy less reliant on the US consumer will be a more stable world economy,” he added.

Consumer spending accounts for around two-thirds of economic activity in the United States — by far the world’s biggest economy — and experts say lower spending could have radical effects on the US’s world standing.

The IMF on Thursday forecast emerging and developing economies would grow 5.1 percent in 2010 — in contrast with just 1.3 percent in advanced economies.

China’s economy was projected to grow by 9.0 percent next year and India’s by 6.4 percent — far ahead of 1.5 percent expansion in the US economy.

“The American engine is not as strong as it was before,” IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said in a speech in which he called for emerging markets to be given more say in the IMF’s decisions.

“Emerging economies are becoming more and more the real partners,” he said.

In a BBC World debate on the crisis held in Istanbul, Niall Ferguson, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School in the United States, said: “The crisis has accelerated a shift from west to east.”

“That means rebalancing not only economically... but rebalancing geopolitically, which I think makes some people nervous,” Ferguson said.

“For the foreseeable future the US will be growing at a much lower rate while China is in fact growing at a much faster

rate,” he added.

The shift is having farreaching effects around the world.

In Latin America, IMF economists said the crisis is affecting countries differently depending on whether, like Mexico, they are more closely tied to the United States or, like Brazil, they have more links with China.

“If it was not for China we wouldn’t have seen positive growth in the second quarter in Brazil,” Ilan Goldfajn, chief economist at Brazilian bank Itau Unibanco, said at an IMForganised conference in Istanbul.

Goldfajn said the world would now start to “rebalance towards Asia.”

Marek Belka, head of the IMF’s European department, cautioned however that for European countries, “demand from Asia is not enough — the recovery rests on the shoulders of European consumers and investors.”

This upheaval is changing institutions too, with the G20 group of developed and emerging economies turning into the main forum for international economic policy and strengthening the IMF as a guarantor of global stability.

The IMF has bailed out countries around the world in recent months and its members have tripled its lending resources to 750 billion dollars (515 billion euros).

Strauss-Kahn has more ambitious plans yet and is seeking more funding to strengthen the IMF’s role as a global lender of last resort.

“Our ultimate goal is financial and economic stability,” he said in a speech in Istanbul at which he outlined plans to even out global economic imbalances.

The G20 summit in the US city of Pittsburgh last month also agreed to give more voting shares to emerging and developing economies in the IMF and the World Bank — a reflection of the shift in economic power.

The World Bank’s Zoellick has also argued that developing countries in Southeast Asia, Latin Amercia, the Middle East and Africa should be seen as future “engines of growth” rather than recipients of charity from rich nations.

In a recent speech in Washington, Zoellick said: “The old international economic order was struggling to keep up with change before the crisis.... It is time we caught up and moved ahead.”

Salma To Work For First Time Since Giving Birth

New York - Salma Hayek may be a few years removed from giving birth, but returning to the set for the first time since welcoming daughter Valentina in August 2007 still wasn’t easy.

But taking on her role as Madame Truska in “The Vampire’s Assistant” was easier for the actress to tackle for one big reason - it was a small part.

“This was very important for me because I hadn’t worked in some time,” Salma told Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson. “I was supposed to do a movie right after Valentina [was born] and it was the first time in my career that I backed out of something because I just couldn’t. I couldn’t.”

Also making the transition back to work easier for Salma was the fact she could bring her daughter to the set, along with several members of her family.

“She did great [on the set]. She’s

a pro,” Salma joked, adding that husband Francois-Henri Pinault and his two children from a previous relationship also visited the set in New Orleans.

The plot and the cast of “The Vampire’s Assistant” - which hits theaters on October 23, starring John C. Reilly and directed by Paul Weitz - also added extra incentive for her return to the big screen.

“This movie, it was great. It was in New Orleans, it was with people that I love, some friends and some people that I didn’t know but that I’ve always wanted to work with,” she added. “It was the perfect movie too. It’s a family movie in a way, and it’s about youth and it’s about love and family.”

As it turns out, getting back to work might have been easy compared to life at home with an active infant.

“I had a talk with her not too long ago. I just said, ‘Listen, you have to slow down because I’m a first-time mommy and I’m not ready for some of the things you’re doing,’” she laughed. “She talks and she’s been walking since 9 months. She counts.

She knows the ABCs.” Perhaps the biggest challenge Valentina has presented to her mom - potty training.

“She’s potty trained on her own.

She did it on her own!” Salma revealed. “She’s like, ‘Take these off mommy. I can go to the bathroom.’

But I’m like, ‘I don’t want you to because I still want you to wear the diaper when we go out because I don’t know how to handle the public bathrooms with you. Give me some time.’ But it’s like, ‘No, I don’t want to wear the diaper. I can do this mommy.’”

Polanski agreed to pay victim 500,000 dlrs to end suit: report Agence France Presse

LOS ANGELES- Disgraced filmmaker Roman Polanski agreed to pay his sexual assault victim 500,000 dollars as part of a 1990s civil settlement but did not live up to the terms, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

The Times cited archived court filings emanating from a confidential 1993 settlement the Oscar-winning director made with Samantha Geimer, who was 13 at the time of the 1977 abuse, 15 years after he fled the United States to avoid sentencing.

Although the settlement was confidential, the amount was disclosed because of a fight to get Polanski, now 76, to pay. The court records do not indicate whether he ever paid the funds he promised, the Times said.

Polanski was detained in Switzerland last week in connection with the case. He could be extradited to the United States within 40 days. Under the deal, Polanski was to pay Geimer 500,000 dollars with interest by October 11, 1995, but the deadline passed with no check from Polanski, according to the court documents.

In 1996, the victim’s attorneys sought help from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to obtain funds from movie studios, Polanski’s agent and the Screen Actors Guild that were originally intended for the filmmaker.

According to the last document filed in the case — dated August 1996 — the director still owed Geimer 604,416 dollars, including interest.

While it remains unclear whether Polanski paid, the Times said the victim’s later change of approach suggests the question may have been resolved.

In 1997, she stopped asking the court for help in getting paid and wrote a letter to a judge supporting Polanski’s eventual return to the United States as well as settling his criminal case without additional time in prison.

“It looks like the children are really doing wonderfully with their grandmother guardian,” Beckloff said in brief comments on the report during a hearing Friday.

Prince Michael, 12, Paris, 11, and Prince II, 7, have been in Katherine Jackson’s care since their father died in late June. Beckloff appointed Katherine Jackson as the children’s permanent guardian in August and asked for an update on their conditions.

“There’s a visceral awe that takes hold of you in looking at a specimen like Lyuba, and the exhibition as a whole demonstrates how close

we can come to knowing what these animals were like,” said lead curator Daniel Fisher, a professor of geological sciences at the University of Michigan who is part of the international team studying the remains.

Lyuba — who was about a month old when she died — has already taught researchers much about mammoths that they had been unable to glean from fossils and other less well preserved finds.

“We had no idea from preserved skeletons and preserved carcasses that

young mammoths had a discrete structure on the back of the head of brown fat cells,” Fisher told reporters.

The hump acted as a furnace to help maintain body temperature in cold climate, which supports the theory that mammoths were born in the early spring.

Lyuba appeared to be in perfect health when she died and researchers found sediment and mud in her mouth, trunk and throat which indicates that she suffocated while struggling to free herself from a mud hole or slurry.

She is intact enough to yield DNA, but “no one is on the threshold of cloning at this point,” Fisher said.

Lubya then embarks on a 10-city tour whose final stop is scheduled for the Natural History Museum of London in 2014.

WASHINGTON,- US health authorities are hoping to contain what they say is an intensifying swine flu pandemic with a massive A(H1N1) vaccination campaign that begins this Tuesday.

“We expect Friday in our weekly update of FluView that we will be reporting substantial flu illness in most of the country, significant flu activity in virtually all states,” said Anne Schuchat, director of the Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

“Most states do have quite a lot of disease right now, and that is unusual for this time of the year,” she said at a press conference on Sunday evening.

Schuchat also shared her concern over the serious risks facing pregnant women infected with the virus, whose risk of dying from the A(H1N1) strain is effectively six times than for the general population.

Between April and August, 100 pregnant women in the United States who contracted the virus were admitted to intensive care, and 28 died, Schuchat said.

According to the most recent figures released by the CDC, 10,082 people have been hospitalized with swine flu in the United States so far, with 936 deaths from the virus, in-

cluding 36 children.

An analysis of post-mortem samples from 77 people who died from the virus showed that most had contracted a secondary infection; a third had pneumonia, for which there is no vaccine.

Schuchat reiterated the importance of vaccination for pregnant women and other groups considered particularly vulnerable to the virus, including children, young adults up to 24 years old, and those suffering from certain other chronic medical problems.

US health authorities on Friday announced plans for a massive vaccination campaign intended to protect millions of Americans, with the first distribution of 600,000 vaccine doses set for Tuesday, two weeks ahead of schedule. The United States expects to quickly dispense some six or seven million doses and hopes to administer 250 million doses by the end of the year.

Clinical trials carried out on five different vaccines showed that a single dose of 15 micrograms is sufficient to cause an efficient immune response.

“We are transitioning from the planning phase to the implementation phase,” Schuchat said. “This is really just the beginning.”

Since the wirelessblocking paint can also block the lower-frequency signals that cell phones use, addled mobile junkies would have no outlet for reaching the outside world.

Rio Olympic win latest step in Brazil transformation Agence France Presse

RIO DE JANEIRO-This Brazilian city’s historic winning bid to host the 2016 Olympics is the result of a long, impassioned and at times frustrating campaign by Latin America’s largest nation to reposition itself on the world stage.

The campaign by Brazil’s most spectacular city is seen as part of a broader effort that includes Brazil’s bid to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council and take a lead role in global efforts to slow climate change.

Now Brazil, a sports-obsessed football power with a record five World Cups, will have the opportunity to organize and host South America’s first Olympic Games after a successful bid in which President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva never tired of repeating the slogan: “This is Brazil’s turn.”

“Brazil needs these Olympics,” said a teary-eyed Lula, who enjoys sky-high popularity of more than 80 percent in his seventh year in office, in his first words in Copenhagen after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the games to Rio. “These people deserve that opportunity.”

And so they thought, with as many as 100,000 people partying to samba music on the sands of Rio’s Copacabana beach after learning of their city’s victory.

Lula, who has already scored a massive sports triumph in bringing the World Cup back to Brazil in 2014, has positioned himself in global forums as the great articulator of the developing world’s aspirations, according to international relations expert Amado Cervo.

The choice of Rio as host “is not

enough, but it helps in creating positive images of a country that has resources” and wishes to muscle onto an international stage already crowded with major powers, Cervo told AFP. “Lula has done very important work on three external fronts,” the analyst said, citing the president’s efforts on multilateralism, the “internationalization of the Brazilian economy” with Lula’s encouragement of foreign investment, and his becoming the de facto face of emerging economies.

The evolution of the BRIC countries — named for emerging world powerhouses Brazil, Russia, India and China — “was largely a result of the political will of the Lula administration,” said Cervo, a professor at the National University of Brasilia.

For Lula meanwhile, the Games will give Brazil some much-needed global clout.

“I always thought that there was something that Brazil lacked. We are a country that has been colonized. Because of this fact, we had an inferiority complex, an obsession that we weren’t important,” Lula said Friday.

The president had long reminded other leaders that his country, the 10th largest economy in the world with 190 million inhabitants, was gaining its rightful place among nations.

A friend of the United States as well as key Washington adversaries Iran and Venezuela, Lula quickly received the congratulations of neighbors, partners and rivals in the Olympic competition.

BEIJING- Dinara Safina made a scrappy start to her Beijing duel with Serena Williams for the world number one spot by beating Italian Roberta Vinci 6-4 6-4 in the first round of the $6.6 million China Open on Sunday.

The Russian must at least match Williams’s progress at the Olympic tennis centre over the next week to retain the number one ranking on Oct. 12, according to the WTA. The 23-year-old’s victory over 59th-ranked Vinci was certainly an improvement on her first round loss to Taiwanese qualifier Chang Kaichen at the Pan Pacific Open last week but it was not wholly convincing.

MANCHESTER- Anton Ferdinand’s stoppage-time own goal helped Manchester United salvage a 2-2 draw against 10-man Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Goals from Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones had put Steve Bruce’s side within moments of their first win at United for 41 years despite Kieran Richardson’s late red card. But Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, who had gone into the match looking for their ninth successive victory, earned a point when Ferdinand brother of Untied defender Rio deflected a Patrice Evra shot into his own net.

The draw left United one point clear of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League, but the champions will be knocked off top spot if the Blues beat Liverpool on Sunday.

Sunderland opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Bent hit his seventh goal of the season. Lee Cattermole knocked a simple pass to Bent on the edge of the penalty box, who, noticing that John O’Shea had given him too much space, turned and rifled a low shot past Ben Foster.

United looked uncharacteristically poor on the ball following Sunderland’s early goal with neither Paul Scholes or midfield partner Darren Fletcher influenc-

ing the game as they can. United’s frustrations were perfectly summed up by Scholes’ booking after 25 minutes for a deliberate trip on Bent - there was no malice there but the midfielder did have a little kick out in order to stop Bent from launching an attack.

Although the pace was relentless, clear cut opportunities remained at a premium as the half progressed although Nemanja Vidic’s intelligent cross into a packed Sunderland box should perhaps have found a United shirt while at the other end a long-range effort from Jones was easily smothered by Foster.

Anderson replaced Scholes at half-time, a tacit admission from Ferguson that he had produced little of note in the first half. United then had their first real opportunity of the game courtesy of a defensive mix-up from Sunderland.

Ferdinand’s weak header back towards his own goalkeeper Craig Gordon did not quite reach, allowing Danny Welbeck to threaten but Gordon dived at his feet and although the ball landed at Rooney’s feet, Ferdinand had then recovered enough to block his effort. How-

ever, nobody could then have stopped Bulgaria striker Dimitar Berbatov as he produced a stunning moment of magic to equalise.

After Sunderland only halfcleared a goalmouth scramble, O’Shea delivered a deep cross and Berbatov thought he would try his luck with an acrobatic bicycle kick which flashed into the far corner of the net. However, United’s hopes of capitalising were then dashed as Sunderland took a 2-1 lead through Jones. Andy Reid floated a ball towards the penalty spot and Jones out-jumped Vidic and crashed into Foster to head into an empty net.

Such goals are normally disallowed for a foul on the keeper but not on this occasion. United continued to push but found a resilient Sunderland defence in the way although they were not helped when Richardson was dismissed for a second bookable offence with five minutes left for kicking the ball away. And they were left to rue his absence as the clock ticked down as Evra hit a long-range shot that was going comfortably wide until it bounced off Ferdinand to gift United a point.

MADRID- Pedro’s stunning strike gave champions Barcelona a 1-0 home win over Almeria on Suday to maintain their 100 percent start to the season.

The 22-year-old forward brought the Nou Camp faithful to their feet when he collected Maxwell’s pass just after the half hour and smashed a shot on the turn into the top right corner.

Barca have 18 points from six matches, three ahead of arch rivals Real Madrid who will be without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo at third-placed Sevilla on Sunday.

The Portugal forward sprained his right ankle in Wednesday’s 30 Champions League win over Olympique Marseille.

ROME-Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder scored in the dying moments to send Italian champions Inter Milan to the top of the Serie A on Saturday with a 2-1 win at Udinese.

Inter have 16 points, one ahead of Sampdoria and two in front of Juventus.

However, positions could switch on Sunday when Sampdoria welcome Parma while Juve travel to Palermo.

Victory on Saturday was a welcome boost for Jose Mourinho’s side who had lost 1-0 at Sampdoria last weekend before struggling to secure a 1-1 Champions League draw at

Kazan in Russia in midweek.

“Sneijder’s goal was what the team deserved,” said Mourinho.

“The team played well. We had lots of chances in the match especially since we had the injury to Diego Milito (replaced in the 25th minute) who is such an important player for us.

“Tonight I am doubly happy because we have the three points and recovered from an error by the referee who should have awarded us a penalty. It was a victory of character.”

Vettel keeps title hopes alive with Japan victory

SUZUKA- Sebastian Vettel kept alive his bid for this year’s world championship when he won Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix and cut Jenson Button’s lead over him to 16 points with two races remaining.

The German delivered an impeccable drive from pole position to take his first victory since the British Grand Prix in June, his third of the season and the fourth of his career.

The 22-year-old, in his Red Bull, now has a chance to overhaul Button and his Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello in the final events in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.

Two years ago, as he will know, Finn Kimi Raikkonen lifted the title after trailing by 17 points with two races remaining.

Button finished eighth, one place behind Barrichello. He had required a five points advantage over the Brazilian to lift the title, but in the end saw his lead trimmed again. The Briton now has 85 points, Barrichello 71 and Vettel 69. Brawn, meanwhile, need just one more point to take the constructors championship ahead of Red Bull.

Vettel won at the challenging Suzuka circuit comfortably, finishing ahead of Italian Jarno Trulli, in a Toyota, and third-placed outgoing world champion Briton Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.

“It can still be done,” he said of winning the drivers title.

“It would be nice to have a couple more races left, but with two races to go, we are here to fight and the best thing we can do is win like today.

“We have a great car, still improving, everyone in the factory is improving so we’ll see.”

His Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said: “He’s got nothing to lose. He just has to win the next two races.”

Raikkonen finished fourth for Ferrari ahead of German Nico Rosberg, fifth for Williams, with German Nick Heidfeld sixth for

BMW Sauber.

Button said he was happy to pick up a point. “I obviously lost a few (points) to Vettel but we expected him to win the race, their pace has been very good all weekend,” he told reporters. “It’s nice to pick up one or two points, whichever one it is, and to finish just behind Rubens.”

Barrichello said he struggled with his set-up, and was now looking forward to his home race in Brazil. “I was struggling with tyres. I would have finished sixth if it hadn’t been for the safety car though. I’ll be going happily to Brazil to win the race and keep my chances alive.”

Trulli, who had fought hard for his second place after an anonymous race in Singapore a week earlier, added: “I knew the start would be most difficult. It was a fantastic race for me after that though. “I enjoyed it because the car was very strong.”

No action taken on Rosberg incident

Suzuka - The Japanese Grand Prix stewards have decided Nico Rosberg did not deserve a penalty and so the Constructors’ Championship is still up for grabs.

Rosberg and Williams technical director Sam Michael were summoned by the stewards after the race following claims from Jenson Button that the German had set his best sector time during the safety car period.

Button reckoned he could have beaten the German had he been slower and the Briton expected Rosberg to be penalised.

A penalty would have given Button’s Brawn team the title, as it needs just 0.5 points to clinch it and both the Briton and team-mate Rubens Barrichello would have moved up a position.

The stewards, however, deemed Rosberg had done nothing wrong.”The Race Director reported to the Stewards that Car No 16, Nico Rosberg exceeded the time delta from when the ‘Safety Deployed’ message was displayed until crossing the Safety Car line,” a statement from the FIA said.

“The Stewards met with the drivers and the team representatives and considered the telemetry data, GPS records, timekeeping and video evidence. This evidence showed a ‘low fuel’ message on the drivers display had overridden the time delta information preventing the driver from being able to accurately follow the timing information.

“However the telemetry data shows that the driver from a safety point of view had reacted adequately to the yellow flags and safety car boards. In view of this the stewards intend to take no further action.”
