People magazine on Wednesday declared Hollywood actor Channing Tatum the “sexiest man alive” in 2012.A muscular 32-year-old former model, Tatum has appeared in “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” “21 Jump Street,” and “Magic Mike,” among other films.

Upon hearing he had been picked for the annual honor, Tatum was modest, the gossip magazine said.

“Y’all are messing with me,” it quoted him as saying.

His wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, told the magazine that her husband

sculpts and likes to quote 19th century author and poet Edgar Allan Poe, as well as offer her massages.

Previous laureates of People’s award include actors George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt.

‘Gangnam Style’ star joins Madonna onstage in NYC Korean pop star PSY joined the pop icon Tuesday night during her second show this week at Madison Square Garden in New York. They danced to his pop culture anthem “Gangnam Style” and to her jam “Music” in front of nearly 20,000 people.

Madonna said PSY flew “all the way from Frankfurt, Germany this morning.” She said she was a big fan of the rapper and loved his suit, which was bright red.

PSY added that he’s had a lot of experiences in the last few months, and that performing with Madonna topped his list.

Kaley Cuoco gets a bang out of ‘Big Bang Theory’ “I know this sounds like it’s not true,” says Kaley Cuoco, “but as huge as the show is, it’s just part of my life — not my whole life.”

“The Big Bang Theory” is huge all right. Now in its sixth season (airing Thursdays on CBS at 8 p.m. EST), it reigns as TV’s hottest sitcom, and now hotter than ever with an average 19 million viewers each week.

As virtually every viewer knows by now, “Big Bang” centers on a gaggle of geeky Cal Tech scientists, chief among them Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki), apartment mates who, by great good sitcom fortune, live across the hall from Penny, played by Cuoco.

Penny aspires to be an actress but pays the rent by waiting tables at a Cheesecake Factory.

Unlike the boys, Penny is no genius. But neither is she a dumb blonde, which is key to the genius of “Big Bang.”

“She’s obviously not book-smart,” says Cuoco, “but she’s street smart and good-hearted and can make fun of herself. The producers never made her ditzy. Maybe she doesn’t always get what the guys are talking about. But in that way she represents most of the world.”

Suantika says workers digging a drainage basin last week in eastern Denpasar, Bali’s capital, at first discovered a large stone about 1 meter (3 feet) underground.

Excavation teams have since uncovered a 57-meter (62-yard) structure that is believed to be the temple’s foundation.

The find is still being analyzed, but given the shape and characteristics of the materials used, Swantika says he believes it was built sometime between the 13th and 15th centuries. He added that it is also thought to be the largest ancient temple ever discovered in Bali.

At least, six stray dogs could be euthanized. Based on information from the Agriculture Agency, it recorded 64 cases of positive rabies in Jembrana Regency within the past 11 months.

The number tended to increase from year to year.

The agency stated that a number of dogs attacking and biting people over the past week were tested positive to rabies. To prevent the widespread epidemic through the other stray dogs, the agency finally eliminated the dogs as anticipation by shooting them with drugs. One of the residents, Made Suarsa, revealed to be restless with the existence of rabid dogs that attacked people. Moreover, the disease was harmless to humans. So, he welcomed the anticipative measure through elimination of a number of stray dogs carried out by relevant agencies.

DENPASAR - Dozens of broiler chickens breeders that are in the Bali Poultry Breeder Group (PPAB) approached Bali House of Representatives last Tuesday (13/11) as they are annoyed by partner companies and big investors also sold their chickens in local markets. Their approach was welcomed by Commission II member, Nyoman Gde Putra Astawa Drh. Head of PPAB, Ketut Yahya Kurniadi Drh. Stated theses individual breeders felt squashed with these big investors or big modals companies selling their poultry lower than individual breeders. They asked for fair and balance market so that both sides can sell their products. They also demanded government to finish the Governor Regulation that has been planned by government in protecting small breeders. Meanwhile PPAB Advisor, Gede Agus Drh. Stated these past few

years Bali have experienced an oversupply of broiler chickens where in 2004-2010 it reached 80-100 thousands alive chicken per day while broiler reached 140-150 thousands per day when actually Bali only needs 100,000 per day. “Bali is much oversupplied, if the production is low it reached 120,000 chickens,” Agus explained.

One causer was because of there are many breeders, big (manufacture) and small (individuals) yet the much growing ones were those big manufacturers from outside Bali. The high increase of Bali individual breeders and big manufacturers moved to Bali were also due to the stoppage of any bird distribution from outside Bali due to bird flu that happened. Yet it seemed a number of living chicken supplies to Bali still are sent since the stoppage which is unfair to smaller companies.

Funnily, those joint companies

in Bali many has no Poultry Cutlery House (RPA) when actually they have the modal to make one.

Astawa stated the joint company was only needed for the modal and should market their product for export (outside Bali) or build a food processing company. Astawa promised will coordinate with executive sides to finish the Governor Regulation as there are a number of sections needed to be revised so little companies can be advantaged. Inside the planned regulation, those joint companies have to have a RPA and those produces more than 1000 pigs in 1 month has to build a Pig Cutlery Place.

To those who produces 250 thousands more chickens in a month also has to have a RPA. “In the future, joint companies wherever they are has to report their operation to connected institution in their area,” Astawa clarified. (wid)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JAKARTA - Indonesian fashion designers paired clean, urban styles with traditional batiks and designs inspired by ancient temples at the sixth annual Jakarta Fashion Week.

Local designers in Asia’s fourth largest economy looked to the past and their heritage to gain a foothold in the international fashion market, a hope expressed in the week’s theme “Indonesia Today, The World Tomorrow.”

“This collection sums up 40 years of my work,” said Josephine Komara, who is also known as Obin, a noted batik artisan who showcased eclectic designs with radiant silks.

Although Obin has shops in Singapore and Japan, she is most successful in her own country.

There are other success stories like hers but Indonesia lacks a brand with global recognition, unlike its Southeast Asian neighbours such as the Malaysian Vincci and Singapore’s Charles & Keith.

But the London-based Centre for Fashion Enterprise (CFE) hopes to change this, propelling young Indonesian designers to the international stage through a mentoring program. Experts say one of the biggest problems is inexperience and a short history of aiming at international markets.

“By going international, it means they have to be ready for

what the market needs,” said Toby Meadows, a CFE consultant. “It might be overwhelming for them because creating winter wear might never have crossed their minds. But if you have a brand, the buyers expect you to have a Fall/ Winter collection as well.”

The fundamentals for international recognition are already there. Designers Yosafat Dwi Kuniawan and Jeffrey Tan offered high fashion and urban cut pret a porter collections, while Barli Asmara and Albert Yanuar went for glamourous dresses with a costume-like touch.

Dian Pelangi, in a nod to local fashion, showed contemporary designs incorporating the hijab that many Indonesian women use to cover their heads.

All are among eight local designers and labels in CFE’s mentoring programme, which they hope will propel them onto the international scene.

None of the designers have dealt with international buyers, although Barli and Yosafat have showed their collections in fashion weeks overseas. Most are still struggling with branding and business plans

over creativity and design ideas.

“I went for a showcase in China Fashion Week in 2009, but there wasn’t any actual trading,” said Yosafat, 23, whose designs are inspired by the ancient Javanese Borobudur temple.

“I simply don’t know how to sell and deliver and I’ve made some big mistakes in my business.”

The CFE mentoring programme, which is backed by the Indonesian and British governments, includes three years of training in branding, pricing, production and marketing. It also helps connect young designers with prospective buyers and to decide which market suits them best.

One success story is Ardistia, who started her label when she was based in New York and later expanded to the Indonesian market with her clean, urban look. Her designs have been shown in department stores in the United States, Canada and France.

Given the growing wealth and middle classes of Asia, Meadows encourages Indonesian designers to broaden their outlook and not just target the most established, traditional fashion markets.

PARIS - French fashion giant Chanel said Wednesday it was not appealing a 200,000-euro fine slapped by a court for stealing a design from a knitwear supplier, bringing to an end a David versus Goliath case.

“The house of Chanel has taken a decision not to lodge an appeal.

It is of the view that this ...very complex and specific case must end,” a terse statement said.

A Paris court in September overturned a 2009 ruling clearing Chanel and slapped the fine, saying the house had designed a vest that was a “slavish copy” of a crochet design by the local knitwear company.

The case pitted World Tricot, a now-bankrupt small firm that

manufactured high-end knits, against Chanel and was seen as a test of the rights enjoyed by skilled artisans toiling in a luxury industry dominated by the big players.

World Tricot founder Carmel Colle was seeking 2.5 million euros (3.7 million dollars) from Chanel for alleged counterfeit after she spotted in a shop window a Chanel vest with a crochet design that she claimed was hers.

The simple cable design with black edging had been previously submitted to Chanel’s studio and rejected, Colle claims.

In 2009, the Paris commercial tribunal ruled that Chanel had not stolen the design although it did order it to pay 400,000 euros in damages to World Tricot for breaking the contract.

DENPASAR - The Bali Tourist Transport Association (Pawiba) plans to raise the transport rates in line with the option of the gradual subsidized fuel price hike as much as IDR 500 every three months in 2013.

Chairman of the Pawiba, Bagus Soediana, said the fuel price hike would automatically have an impact on the increase of transport rates.

However, the rate increase of the Pawiba would not exactly match the percentage of the increase in fuel price.

“Every fuel price hike will definitely be followed by the rate increase. However, the amount is not necessarily equal to the increase of the other transport fare,” said Bagus Soediana in Denpasar.

He said the increase in fuel price would have an impact on the rising price of spare parts. For example, the price of tire would go up and so would the price of lubricating oil. To that end, the Pawiba did not dare to set the rate increase yet. “Probably, within a week after the increase we can make decision about the percentage of the price hike,” he said.

Similarly, the fuel price hike was also estimated to have an impact on the price increase of new tourist vehicle or transport. The increase in the vehicle price would affect the calculation of the fleet rejuvenation cost of tourist transport entrepreneur.

“Pawiba must calculate the fuel price hike with the tourist transport rates.

Obviously, the rates of Pawiba will be reviewed and adjusted to the fuel price hike,” he said.

It was estimated, the rate increase of Pawiba would have implications on the business of travel agencies as users of the tourist transport services, especially in the matter of tour package price.

Meanwhile, the economist Prof.

Dr. Gede Sri Darma, DBA, said the government plan to raise the subsidized fuel price at IDR 500 every three months over the next year would clearly become a blow to people. This policy would also cause a wider gap. It happened because the existing weak purchasing power would be exacerbated by the rise in fuel price.

“The fuel price hike amidst the unequal prosperity would make the burden the Indonesian people harder, especially for the category of poor people because the cost of living covered is increasingly higher,” he said.

Price increase in the subsidized fuel would also significantly influence the lifestyle and life fulfillment pattern of the basic needs of the Indonesian people. It was triggered by the increase that was not followed by an increase in the level of welfare or income. “At least, the increase in fuel price affects the price of basic needs up to 5 percent with the inflation rate of over 50 percent,” he concluded. NEGARA - According to the Maritime, Fishery and Forestry Department of Jembrana, the supply of freshwater fish in Bali has reached eight tonnes per day.

“Therefore, we are targeting to create 1,000 freshwater fish ponds in two to three years,” said the Head of Maritime, Fishery, and Forestry Department of Jembrana, Dwi Maharimbawa.

He said that some of the restaurant entrepreneurs are keen on cultivating freshwater fish such as catfish, carp and tilapia but are afraid of investing in this venture because of the uncertainty of fish production.

According to Maharimbawa, freshwater fish cultivation is uncertain because it is not properly organised in terms of maintenance and marketing.

“The residents do not jump into freshwater fish cultivation without proper research on the technical maintenance and the market share. In addition, the capital and income are not balanced, resulting in losses,” he said.

“Right now the biggest challenge facing the Bali Process is how to deal with the comprehensively rising flow of irregular migrants,” he said.

Terrorists alone can be captured, let alone the perpetrator of this incident, except there is a conspiracy and patterns of power moving and dominating the case,” he said.

Furthermore, this academician from the Mahendradatta University appreciated the activity of Gendo in the Walhi in advocating the environmental cases in Bali.

Considering such abuse case, Gendo righteously gets a protection.

“It’s legitimate what Gendo and his friends carried out in advocating the environmental cases. Moreover, it has complied with the corridors and the action was not anarchic. He is worth getting a legal protection,” he said.

Although the persecution against Gendo was assessed to become a scourge to environmental activists, Fahmi hoped they keep fighting for the nature of Bali.

SINGARAJA - One of the reasons why travelers are reluctant to spend holidays in Buleleng is the distance from the airport is quite far and passing through winding route. Far distance and the route causing carsick sometimes makes travelers saturated while taking a trip to North Bali. To overcome the obstacle, the Buleleng Government should have a specific strategy so that travelers will not get bored.

For instance, it can be resolved by building a stopover on the peak area or upstream region, precisely at the T-junction of Wanagiri village.

Discussion on the distance and winding route with the ascending and steep descending route has indeed become a discourse since many years ago. For several times, there has a suggestion to build a toll road through the hills or toll road hovering over the abyss. However, they are only limited to a discourse.

Until now, the route from Denpasar to Singaraja via Bedugul remains to make people carsick. If smooth road cannot be built, there is indeed another strategy to cope with the saturation of tourists when passing through long route. It is by building a stopover on the peak, precisely at the T-junction of Wanagiri.

So far, the area has often been taken advantage as stopover by tourists who come from Denpasar to Singaraja or otherwise.

Moreover, at the location tourists can watch tame monkeys that are sometimes passing on the road.

Unfortunately, the area has not been worked on seriously. Lacking of parking space often causes

traffic crowdedness. Besides, there has been no convenient and representative stall where to drink coffee or tea while enjoying the surrounding scenery. Now, there have been a row of traditional stalls on the roadside, but they have not been well arranged.

A member of Commission II of the Bali House, Sugawa Korry, said the tourism development in the upstream area was indeed very important. However, the development should be done carefully so that the upstream region would not get polluted as it served as catchment area. According to him, on the peak such as at Wanagiri should be established a transit point or a kind of stopover. In the area could be built a restaurant or special place that could be utilized by travelers to unwind before continuing their journey to Buleleng. There, it could be establish a kind of tourism tower. From the tower, travelers can see the Lake Buyan, Lake Beratan and Lake Tamblingan to

the south as well as Singaraja town and the sea in the north.

On the other hand, Sugawa Korry asked the government not to develop tourist accommodation in the upstream area such as hotels, inns and villas. It belonged to the water catchment area. If many hotels and inns were built in the area, it was feared to result in a clean water crisis on the lowland area in Buleleng. According to him, the accommodation had been built in Lovina and Pemuteran. “So let Wanagiri be made into a transit area for travelers, while the accommodation has been provided in Lovina or Pemuteran,” he said.

The Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, said that his party was preparing a management concept of tourism on the peak area, right at the T-junction of Wanagiri. “Just wait, we’ve prepared the concept and planning. SEOUL - A South Korean air force pilot was killed Thursday when his jet trainer crashed into a mountain as he rehearsed moves for an upcoming flying display, the defence ministry said.

The T-50B aircraft manned by a 32year-old flight lieutenant hit the side of the mountain in the northeastern county of Hoengseong during a training flight for an air show, a ministry spokesman said.

“The pilot was found dead near the crash site,” he said, adding an investigation was underway into the cause of the accident.

The crash sparked a brush fire which was quickly extinguished by firefighters, Yonhap news agency said.

Some witnesses had reported seeing a parachute, which originally led rescuers to believe the pilot might have survived.

Military officials said it was the firstever crash involving a T-50B, which is a variant of South Korea’s first home-made supersonic aircraft, the T-50, and is used by the air force’s Black Eagle air show team.

Since its maiden flight in 2002, the T-50 has been produced in aerobatic and combat variants, including the TA-50 light attack aircraft which South Korea has been actively pushing for export.

Indonesia has ordered 16 TA-50 light fighters, and South Korea is pursuing other contracts from the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq.

Japan, North Korea reopen stalled bilateral talks

TOKYO — Japan and North Korea began bilateral talks Thursday in Mongolia that Tokyo hopes will shed light on a series of decades-old abductions.

The talks in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator are scheduled to last through Friday. In August, lower-level negotiators from Japan and North Korea held the countries’ first bilateral talks in four years, but made little progress.

Japan wants information on the abductions of Japanese citizens by North

Korean agents in the 1970s and ‘80s. Japan believes at least one abductee may still be alive and in the North, though North Korea denies this. Five abductees were returned to Japan in 2002.

Japan and North Korea do not have formal diplomatic relations. The abduction issue and concerns over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs have long strained ties.

Japanese officials indicated before the start of the talks that they expected them to be tough and not likely to lead to any immediate breakthroughs.

North Korea’s official media provided few details, reporting only that they were intended to deal with issues of mutual interest.

Japan has imposed strict sanctions against the North and cut off most economic and cultural exchanges in 2006 after a missile launch.

Tensions heightened again earlier this year when the North launched a rocket that it said carried a satellite, but that Japan and other countries criticized as a thinly disguised test of long-range missile technology. The launch failed just after takeoff.

BERLIN - The eurozone debt crisis is taking its toll on Germany, Europe’s largest economy, which ground to a near halt in the third quarter of the year, official figures showed on Thursday. crisis, is increasingly feeling the pinch.

Economists expressed relief that the figures did not show Germany sliding into reverse, but warned that clouds were darkening on the horizon.

Constantin Wirschke from Natixis bank said the third quarter figures were “as expected.” For the fourth quarter, however, he acknowledged: “We are not as optimistic.”

“In our view, Germany’s economy faces an uphill battle in Q4 trying to attain positive growth,” said the analyst.

So-called leading indicators of the economy, which aim to predict future performance, have pointed to a continued slowdown in the months ahead.

Toyota recalls vehicles for steering, pump defects Associated Press

TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 2.77 million vehicles around the world for a water pump problem and a steering shaft defect that may result in faulty steering — the latest in a spate of quality woes for Japan’s top automaker.

No accidents have been reported related to these two problems announced Wednesday, according to Toyota.

Some 1.51 million vehicles are being recalled for the steering defect in Japan and 1.25 million vehicles abroad — including 670,000 in the U.S. Affected models include the Prius hybrid, Corolla, Wish and other models produced from 2000 to 2011 in Japan, and from 2000 to 2009 overseas.

Of those vehicles, some 620,000 spanning five hybrid

models, including the Prius, have a defective water pump in addition to the steering shaft defect. Those vehicles were produced from 2001 to 2010 in Japan, and from 2003 to 2011 overseas. Another 10,000 vehicles with only a pump problem are also being recalled.

The latest recalls — affecting Toyota’s prized Prius hybrid, a symbol of its technological prowess — come on top of a recall last month for 7.43 million vehicles for a faulty powerwindow switch that could cause fires.

Toyota has been trying to fix its reputation after a series of massive recalls of 14 million vehicles over the last several years, mostly in the U.S., affecting faulty floor mats, braking and gas pedals.

RIM offers free voice calls over Wi-Fi with BBM

TORONTO — BlackBerry users will be able to make free voice calls over a Wi-Fi network using the popular BBM messaging service.

Research In Motion Ltd. announced Wednesday that it’s adding the feature to BBM. Users will be able to switch back and forth from a text chat to a voice call. A split-screen option will let them talk and text at the same time.

The new feature is a free update for existing customers and comes months before RIM introduces its new BlackBerry 10 smartphones, which are seen critical to RIM’s survival.

RIM surprised analysts in September when it announced that the number of BlackBerry subscribers grew, thanks in part to emerging markets and its popular BBM service. It’s struggling in North America as customers migrate to flashier iPhones and Android phone.

RIM stopped short of offering the BBM voice feature over wireless carriers’ own cellular networks. Doing so would have potentially created more congestion on cellular data networks and deprive carriers of revenue for voice calls. With the new feature, the free calls are limited to times and places where Wi-Fi is available.

The Canadian company said the BBM voice feature is especially attractive for developing markets. Unlike regular texts, BBM messages are not charged on a per-text basis.

Although RIM is struggling in North America, the BlackBerry continues to sell well in such markets as South Africa, Nigeria and Indonesia.

The BBM service has long been a reason for BlackBerry users to not defect to other smartphones but there are rival messaging services. There are more than 60 million BBM users worldwide.

RIM said the BBM voice update is currently available for BlackBerry smartphones running the BlackBerry 6 operating system or higher, with plans for BlackBerry 5 later. RIM’s latest phones run the 7 operating system. The next version, BlackBerry 10, will come soon after a Jan. 30 launch event.

Sanghyang Jaran dance is one of the sacred dances in Bali. In terms of its function, it is only performed in a series of sacred ceremonies in relation to trance, not intended for profane entertainment show. This concept also applies to Sanghyang Jaran dance growing and developing in the village of Bona. The Sanghyang Jaran dance functions as a medium to repel disaster afflicting the society. This Sanghyang Jaran dance almost has the same meaning as many other Sanghyang Dances like Sanghyang Dedari.

One of the community leaders of Bona Village doubling as Sanghyang Jaran artist, Made Sija, explained the emergence of Sanghyang Jaran dance was inspired by the incident of contagious diseases attacking the residents of Bona. Local residents suddenly fell sick and died instantly. They were very worried and finally looking for a medium, but they failed. People were then turning anxious or living through horrible ambience.

Triggered by such an atmosphere, people did not dare to leave the house. Each house was then marked off with thorny pandanus leaf and smeared with chalk in the form of cross sign. Anxiety of local community was very serious until they should leave the house while hitting coconut midrib onto the ground or any objects to generate noisy atmosphere. One of the aims of doing so was to drive out evil spirits from the Bona Village. Unfortunately, the endeavor was not successful, either, he explained.

Finally, local villagers gathered in the Puseh Temple, the abode of Lord Vishnu, to invoke protection and to expel the evil spirits. Suddenly, there were two girls possessed. They received vision from the deity instructing the devotees in attendance to make light music to accompany the dance. Since there was no gamelan instrument at that time, they only used a cappella along with vowel sounds of prayer and praise to Supreme God to apply for safety. One of them was by accompaniment of cak a cappella.

The holy spirits entering into the girls’ body were always changing.

Sometimes, they behaved finely (Sanghyang Dedari), sometimes on the opposite just like holding an object (Sanghyang Jaran). Strangely, while being still possessed, the girls asked to have a bath, not by water but by fire. As requested, the community kindled a fire with coconut fibers. Those who got possessed were even trampling on fire, but their legs did not catch fire. On seeing the fact, people were very

confident if the people dancing the Sanghyang dance were possessed by the spirit of the deities to dance the Sanghyang Jaran and Sanghyang Dedari, he said.

Very rare

In the development of Sanghyang Jaran dance today, many people use it for commercial purposes. However, the Sanghyang Jaran used to pamper tourists is not the one sanctified by devotees. Rather, it is the Sanghyang Jaran deliberately created as a performance, as existing in the Paripurna Dance Studio of Bona Village. Today, the performance of Sanghyang Dance at Bona Village, particularly for tourist attraction, is very rare because some other stages have already performed the same dance.

Made Sija, owner of the Paripurna Dance Studio of Bona said the rules of Sanghyang Dance were begun by notification ritual to deities. Then, it was resumed with burning incense, and then the incense smokes encapsulated the Sanghyang dancers, while the Kukus Arum sacred song was chanted by some residents repeatedly until the dancers getting possessed. If they had been getting possessed, their body would tremble involuntarily. Having been possessed by the Sanghyang Jaran, the dancers jumped into a smoldering campfire, kicking the fire here and there and the singing of the song was even more excited. As long as the song was chanted, the dancers continued to dance until leaving the arena as if they were pursued. “Movement of this dance has no particular patterns and it can be danced so perfectly or in harmony. The Sanghyang Jaran as implied by the name jumps, runs fast and heehaws like the cry of horses,” he explained.

In practice, some dancers even came occasionally in a hurry though they happened to be at home because they had simultaneous spiritual contact when putting into a trance. Without wearing hobbyhorse they directly ran toward the fire. DENPASAR - Commission D of the Denpasar House criticized the classroom building rehabilitation project of the SDN 26 Dangin Puri elementary school, East Denpasar. It was responded to the report from the local school committee if the project was abandoned by the workers. As a result, the project execution turned dormant up to two months. Meanwhile, the classrooms dismantled by the workers of the contractor were abandoned until now without any further handling.

“I indeed received the report from the school committee. In response to this issue, we in the Commission D will coordinate this matter with the Commission B handling the development issues,” said Secretary of Commission D of the Denpasar House, AA Putu Gede Wibawa, when contacted on Tuesday (Nov 13).

As a follow-up, he said, his party would organize an internal meeting in the Commission D. Furthermore, his party also planned to summon the school authority, school committee, principal and the Denpasar Education Agency.

“We will make coordination with all the parties concerned. Do not let this problem harm the students of the school. By all means, the dormant classroom potentially makes the students learn uncomfortably. Parents of the students will also object if the classroom

rehabilitation project is dormant for too long,” he said.

When confirmed separately, Chief Committee of the SDN 26 Dangin Puri, Made Darmaja, justified if he had reported the dormant classroom rehabilitation project. He said the project was worked on by CV Karya Tehnik Mandiri under supervision of CV Amrita Tehnik with contract No.027/3113/Dikpora. Duration of the project execution was 90 days from September 10, 2012 with a total budget of IDR 246.4 million.

“As a matter of fact, since the specified contract date the contractor should have started its work.

So far, there are no workers. Such conditions have occurred over the past two months,” he said.

According to Darmaja, initially there were a number of workers who started to dismantle three units of classroom that should

be rehabilitated last September.

In fact, they only dismantled the buildings, while there were no works after that. “I have asked the contractor. It was said there was no budget. It is funny, isn’t it? The budget has been allocated and approved by the government,” he complained.

In addition, his party also assessed if there had been mistake in the planning because the rehabilitation seemed to be patchy or had been done randomly. For example, the classroom’s roof of grade two was leaking. Before repairing the roof, the contractor had even installed the plafond.

GAZA - A Hamas rocket killed three Israelis north of the Gaza Strip on Thursday, drawing first blood from Israel as the Palestinian death toll rose to 13 and the military showdown lurched closer to all-out war.

Israeli warplanes bombed targets in and around Gaza city, where tall buildings trembled and thick plumes of smoke and dust furled into the sky.

The Palestinian Islamist group claimed it had fired a one-tonne, Iranian-made Fajr 5 rocket at Tel Aviv in what would be a major escalation. But there was no reported impact in the Israeli metropolis 50 km (30 miles) north of the enclave.

Israel’s sworn enemy Iran, which supports and arms Hamas, condemned the offensive begun by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as “organized terrorism”.

Israel was more concerned about the mood in Egypt, whose new Islamist government brokered a truce between the two sides on Tuesday only to see it shattered a day later when Israel assassinated the top Hamas military commander.

Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood which now controls Egypt, Israel’s most powerful Arab neighbor and a crucial partner in the 1979 peace treaty that stands between fragile stability and regional chaos.

Cairo condemned the offensive and recalled its ambassador to Israel. Israel’s ambassador left Cairo on what was called a routine home visit and Israel said its embassy would stay open.

BP near settlement with US over Gulf spill

LONDON — British oil company BP said Thursday it is in advanced talks with U.S. agencies about settling criminal and other claims from the Gulf of Mexico well blowout two years ago.

In a statement, BP said “no final agreement has yet been reached” and that any such deal would still be subject to court approvals. Shares in BP PLC were down 0.8 percent at 422 pence in early trading in London.

BP said the proposed settlement would not include civil claims under the Clean Water Act and other legislation, pending private civil claims and state claims for economic loss.

The explosion and fire aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig on April 20, 2010, killed 11 workers and set off a spill which continued for 87 days, fouling large areas of the southern coast of the United States.

The rig sank and an estimated 200 million gallons of crude oil gushed out of the well, fouling extensive areas of the southern U.S. coast and disrupting tourism and commercial fishing.

Any settlement is expected to dwarf the largest previous corporate criminal penalty assessed by the Department of Justice — the $1.2 billion fine imposed on drug maker Pfizer in 2009.

BP has booked provisions of $38.1 billion to cover its liabilities from the incident, but the company has said the final cost remained highly uncertain.

“I hear you have some questions for me,” Obama told reporters at the White House before launching into familiar positions on raising taxes for wealthy Americans and protecting the middle class.

The contents of the classified material and how Broadwell acquired it remain under investigation, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to comment publicly.

But the quantity of classified material found on the computer was significant enough to warrant a continuing investigation, the officials told Reuters.

As a reserve officer in military intelligence, Broadwell - co-author of a biography on Petraeus - had security clearances that gave her access to classified material, several officials said. Government rules require such material to be stored in secure locations or computers.

Two officials familiar with the case said that one question investigators are asking was whether Broadwell followed government rules for handling classified information.

Late Monday, FBI investigators searched Broadwell’s residence in Charlotte, North Carolina, an action that officials said occurred with Broadwell’s consent.

Attempts to reach Broadwell, who has remained mainly out of the public eye, have been unsuccessful. She was seen late Tuesday at her brother’s home in Washington, D.C. During the FBI investigation that led to the discovery of the affair between Petraeus and Broadwell, both individuals denied that Petraeus had supplied her with any classified information and the FBI accepted those explanations, law enforcement sources have said.

JAKARTA - Indonesian police detained 48 students and a teacher from an Islamic boarding school and seized firearms and sharp weapons, a spokesman said Tuesday, in the nation’s latest terror raid.

Dozens of police stormed the Darul Akhfiya school in eastern Java’s Nganjuk district on Monday and kept the students and teacher overnight for questioning.

“Police detained 48 students and a teacher on Monday after the community reported unusual activity at the school and expressed concern about possible anarchic behaviour,” national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told reporters.

Amar said the school was “strongly suspected of conducting terrorism training”.

“Police also seized long-barreled rifles, ammunition and sharp weapons, including a cleaver, as well as books on jihad,” Amar said.

Indonesian police have conducted a series of terror raids in recent months, including a sweep across the island of Java in October, netting 11 suspects in a plan to attack the US embassy and other American targets.

Indonesia was rocked last decade by several deadly terror attacks blamed on the Al-Qaeda-linked network Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, mostly foreigners.

But a crackdown on militancy in the country has crippled JI, and smaller terror cells that have carried out low-impact attacks have emerged.

Malaysia police probe fresh Indonesia maid abuse

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian police are investigating a man for allegedly raping a 15-year-old Indonesian working for him, officials said Thursday, days after another maid accused three policemen of rape.

The cases have reportedly caused outrage in Indonesia. Ties between the two neighbours have been tense over frequent reports of abuse in recent years, causing Indonesia to temporarily stop sending maids to Malaysia in 2009.

Malaysia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the Indonesian in the latest case in Seremban, a town near the capital Kuala Lumpur, was raped, as well as tied up and left without food for four days.

Police are investigating her employer, who was arrested earlier this week, over the rape. The charge carries up to 20 years in prison.

“The government vehemently condemns this shameful, inhuman act,” the ministry said.

Seremban police chief Saiful Azly told AFP that the 15-year-old was in the country illegally and had worked in the household for three months.

Last week, three policemen in northern Penang state came under investigation for allegedly gang-raping an Indonesian woman after stopping her to check her papers.

Indonesia, the main provider of domestic workers for Malaysia, stopped sending maids to its Southeast Asian neighbour in 2009 after numerous abuse cases.

Jakarta announced last December it would lift the ban after the two countries agreed to better protect them, including allowing them one day off per week.

But few maids have reportedly arrived since then. Before the ban was enforced some 300,000 Indonesian women worked in Malaysian households.

Cambodia also imposed a ban on sending domestic workers to Malaysia last year following numerous abuse complaints.

JAKARTA - The UN human rights chief condemned Tuesday violence and discrimination against Christians and Muslim minorities like Shiites in Indonesia, the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said she had met with leaders of Christian communities, as well as Islamic minority Shiite and Ahmadiyah sects, all of which have been targeted by hardliners in recent years.

“I was distressed to hear accounts of violent attacks, forced displacement, denial of identification cards and other forms of discrimination and harassment against them,” she told reporters in the capital Jakarta.

She warned Indonesia risked losing its culture of diversity and tolerance “if firm action is not taken to address increasing

Pillay recommended Indonesia repeal its blasphemy law from 1965, under which a Shiite cleric was jailed for two years in July for saying the Koran was not an authentic text and that the hajj pilgrimage was not obligatory.

She also called for the revocation of a 2008 ministerial decree that deemed Ahmadiyah “deviant” for believing in a prophet after Mohammed and banned Ahmadis from proselytising.

In May, a mob of 600 Islamic hardliners threw plastic bags filled with urine at an Indonesian church congregation marking the ascension of Christ.

In August 2011, an Indonesian court handed jail sentences of just a few months to 12 hardliners who clubbed to death three Ahmadiyah men as police looked on.

Shiite Muslims have become common targets for hardliners.

A mob of around 500 Sunni Muslims wielding machetes and sickles attacked a Shiite community in August, killing two and torching dozens of homes in eastern Java.

Pillay also expressed concern over sharia law in Aceh province -- where canings are common and a law on stoning was passed in 2009 -- saying enforcement was “arbitrary” and “discriminatory” against women, creating “an environment of intimidation and fear”.

A doping hotline is to be set up for cyclists who want to blow the whistle on fellow riders, the International Cycling Union (UCI) said Tuesday.

“During the coming weeks ... the UCI will be looking into establishing a new open line - a confidential ‘hotline’,” said Pat McQuaid, head of the sport’s world governing body in an online statement on the UCI website.

Addressing riders directly, McQuaid said more needed to be done “to ensure that the UCI is as accessible as possible, and in particular to you the riders, should you wish to discuss issues or concerns relating to doping.”

It would take time to build trust in the telephone hotline, McQuaid said, adding that he was “confident that, with the best intentions from both sides, we can build that trust” and “accelerate the change in culture that we need in our sport.”

Formula One romance lost on Americans Americans have had a long-standing love affair with the car but the romance of Formula One, that sets hearts of motor sports fans around the world a flutter, has never managed to get pulses racing in the United States.

After a five-year hiatus, F1 returns to the United States this weekend for the U.S. Grand Prix at the $400 million Circuit of the Americas, where Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel can clinch a third successive driver’s title.

As jet-setters, high rollers and A-listers descend on Austin, the quirky Texas capital is gearing up for a week that will see an estimated $220 million poured into the state economy.

Hotel rooms, if one can be obtained, are going at triple the normal rates while rental car companies are soldout and requests for reservations at one of the city’s top restaurants are met with a laugh.

In the United States, however, the appeal of motor racing’s glamour circuit has somehow been lost on the country that sells more Ferraris and Porsches than

any other and it is likely more eyeballs will be focused on Homestead, Florida on Sunday where NASCAR’s Chase championship will be decided.

“The truth is we find that there is no crossover,” Eddie Gossage, the president of Texas Motor Speedway near Dallas, which hosts two of NASCAR’s biggest races, told Reuters.

The U.S. has been a market Formula One covets but is also one that commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone has viewed as more of a luxury than a necessity as the circuit searched out new venues to expand its global brand.

But the teams, car manufacturers and sponsors have not been so cavalier about the importance of having a U.S. race on the calendar with all of them keen to return to one of their biggest markets.

Once focused on wooing over NASCAR and IndyCar fans, F1 now appears more intent on catering to its base in yet another attempt to crack the U.S. market, with the Austin venue the 10th to host the race.

London submits bid to host 2017 IPC worlds

London, hosts of this year’s Paralympic Games, has submitted a formal bid for the 2017 IPC World Championships, the city’s mayor Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday.

Johnson said the success of the Games, hailed as the biggest and most high-profile in Paralympic history with 2.7 million tickets sold and involving more than 160 countries, showed there was a “huge appetite” for para-sport in Britain.

“The 2017 IPC World Championships present a fantastic opportunity for us to build on that phenomenal surge of enthusiasm and welcome back some of the world’s greatest sportsmen and women to the Olympic Stadium,” he added in an emailed statement.

“Securing the championships would not only reinforce London’s reputation as the world’s leading sporting city, it would bring a vital

multi-million pound boost to the capital’s economy, creating jobs and driving growth in east London.”

If successful, the championships, which were last held in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2011, would take place in July 2017, a month before the non-disabled World Athletics Championships, the statement said.

Hosting the event would cost an estimated 8.6 million pounds (10.8 million euros, $13.7 million), with the majority of the outlay recouped through sponsorship and ticket sales, it added.

The chairman of governing body UK Athletics Ed Warner, who also sits on the IPC’s athletics

sports technical committee, said the Paralympics had shown Britain’s appetite for elite disability sport and London’s ability to host such a major event.

A successful bid for the British capital “would establish a new standard for the IPC World Athletics Championships against which all future editions would be measured”, he added.

International Paralympic Committee (IPC) spokesman Craig Spence said it was policy not to comment on how many bids had been received or from where but told AFP: “We welcome the bid. We had a great time in London and it was a very strong event.”

France may no longer be the team who dominated world soccer in the late 1990s, but a draw against Spain and a win in Italy have shown they have at least become a force once again.

A doping hotline is to be set up for cyclists who want to blow the whistle on fellow riders, the International Cycling Union (UCI) said Tuesday.

“During the coming weeks ... the UCI will be looking into establishing a new open line - a confidential ‘hotline’,” said Pat McQuaid, head of the sport’s world governing body in an online statement on the UCI website.

Addressing riders directly, McQuaid said more needed to be done “to ensure that the UCI is as accessible as possible, and in particular to you the riders, should you wish to discuss issues or concerns relating to doping.”

It would take time to build trust in the telephone hotline, McQuaid said, adding that he was “confident that, with the best intentions from both sides, we can build that trust” and “accelerate the change in culture that we need in our sport.”

Formula One romance lost on Americans Americans have had a long-standing love affair with the car but the romance of Formula One, that sets hearts of motor sports fans around the world a flutter, has never managed to get pulses racing in the United States.

After a five-year hiatus, F1 returns to the United States this weekend for the U.S. Grand Prix at the $400 million Circuit of the Americas, where Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel can clinch a third successive driver’s title.

As jet-setters, high rollers and A-listers descend on Austin, the quirky Texas capital is gearing up for a week that will see an estimated $220 million poured into the state economy.

Hotel rooms, if one can be obtained, are going at triple the normal rates while rental car companies are soldout and requests for reservations at one of the city’s top restaurants are met with a laugh.

In the United States, however, the appeal of motor racing’s glamour circuit has somehow been lost on the country that sells more Ferraris and Porsches than

any other and it is likely more eyeballs will be focused on Homestead, Florida on Sunday where NASCAR’s Chase championship will be decided.

“The truth is we find that there is no crossover,” Eddie Gossage, the president of Texas Motor Speedway near Dallas, which hosts two of NASCAR’s biggest races, told Reuters.

The U.S. has been a market Formula One covets but is also one that commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone has viewed as more of a luxury than a necessity as the circuit searched out new venues to expand its global brand.

But the teams, car manufacturers and sponsors have not been so cavalier about the importance of having a U.S. race on the calendar with all of them keen to return to one of their biggest markets.

London submits bid to host 2017 IPC worlds

London, hosts of this year’s Paralympic Games, has submitted a formal bid for the 2017 IPC World Championships, the city’s mayor Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday.

Johnson said the success of the Games, hailed as the biggest and most high-profile in Paralympic history with 2.7 million tickets sold and involving more than 160 countries, showed there was a “huge appetite” for para-sport in Britain.

“The 2017 IPC World Championships present a fantastic opportunity for us to build on that phenomenal surge of enthusiasm and welcome back some of the world’s greatest sportsmen and women to the Olympic Stadium,” he added in an emailed statement.

“Securing the championships would not only reinforce London’s reputation as the world’s leading sporting city, it would bring a vital

multi-million pound boost to the capital’s economy, creating jobs and driving growth in east London.”

If successful, the championships, which were last held in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2011, would take place in July 2017, a month before the non-disabled World Athletics Championships, the statement said.

Hosting the event would cost an estimated 8.6 million pounds (10.8 million euros, $13.7 million), with the majority of the outlay recouped through sponsorship and ticket sales, it added.

The chairman of governing body UK Athletics Ed Warner, who also sits on the IPC’s athletics

sports technical committee, said the Paralympics had shown Britain’s appetite for elite disability sport and London’s ability to host such a major event.

A successful bid for the British capital “would establish a new standard for the IPC World Athletics Championships against which all future editions would be measured”, he added.

International Paralympic Committee (IPC) spokesman Craig Spence said it was policy not to comment on how many bids had been received or from where but told AFP: “We welcome the bid. We had a great time in London and it was a very strong event.”

Hamas rocket kills 3 Israelis, wider war looms Reuters

GAZA - A Hamas rocket killed three Israelis north of the Gaza Strip on Thursday, drawing first blood from Israel as the Palestinian death toll rose to 13 and the military showdown lurched closer to all-out war.

Israeli warplanes bombed targets in and around Gaza city, where tall buildings trembled and thick plumes of smoke and dust furled into the sky.

The Palestinian Islamist group claimed it had fired a one-tonne, Iranian-made Fajr 5 rocket at Tel Aviv in what would be a major escalation. But there was no reported impact in the Israeli metropolis 50 km (30 miles) north of the enclave.

Israel’s sworn enemy Iran, which supports and arms Hamas, condemned the offensive begun by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as “organized terrorism”.

Israel was more concerned about the mood in Egypt, whose new Islamist government brokered a truce between the two sides on Tuesday only to see it shattered a day later when Israel assassinated the top Hamas military commander.

Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood which now controls Egypt, Israel’s most powerful Arab neighbor and a crucial partner in the 1979 peace treaty that stands between fragile stability and regional chaos.

BP near settlement with US over Gulf spill

LONDON — British oil company BP said Thursday it is in advanced talks with U.S. agencies about settling criminal and other claims from the Gulf of Mexico well blowout two years ago.

In a statement, BP said “no final agreement has yet been reached” and that any such deal would still be subject to court approvals. Shares in BP PLC were down 0.8 percent at 422 pence in early trading in London.

BP said the proposed settlement would not include civil claims under the Clean Water Act and other legislation, pending private civil claims and state claims for economic loss.

The explosion and fire aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig on April 20, 2010, killed 11 workers and set off a spill which continued for 87 days, fouling large areas of the southern coast of the United States.

The rig sank and an estimated 200 million gallons of crude oil gushed out of the well, fouling extensive areas of the southern U.S. coast and disrupting tourism and commercial fishing.

Any settlement is expected to dwarf the largest previous corporate criminal penalty assessed by the Department of Justice — the $1.2 billion fine imposed on drug maker Pfizer in 2009.

BP has booked provisions of $38.1 billion to cover its liabilities from the incident, but the company has said the final cost remained highly uncertain.

WASHINGTON - A computer used by Paula Broadwell, the woman whose affair with CIA director David Petraeus led to his resignation, contained substantial classified information that should have been stored under more secure conditions, law enforcement and national security officials said on Wednesday.

The contents of the classified material and how Broadwell acquired it remain under investigation, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to comment publicly.

But the quantity of classified material found on the computer was significant enough to warrant a continuing investigation, the officials told Reuters.

As a reserve officer in military intelligence, Broadwell - co-author of a biography on Petraeus - had security clearances that gave her access to classified material, several officials said. Government rules require such material to be stored in secure locations or computers.

Two officials familiar with the case said that one question investigators are asking was whether Broadwell followed government rules for handling classified information.

Late Monday, FBI investigators searched Broadwell’s residence in Charlotte, North Carolina, an action that officials said occurred with Broadwell’s consent.

Attempts to reach Broadwell, who has remained mainly out of the public eye, have been unsuccessful. She was seen late Tuesday at her brother’s home in Washington, D.C. During the FBI investigation that led to the discovery of the affair between Petraeus and Broadwell, both individuals denied that Petraeus had supplied her with any classified information and the FBI accepted those explanations, law enforcement sources have said.

INDONESIA Police detain 49 in school terror raid

JAKARTA - Indonesian police detained 48 students and a teacher from an Islamic boarding school and seized firearms and sharp weapons, a spokesman said Tuesday, in the nation’s latest terror raid.

Dozens of police stormed the Darul Akhfiya school in eastern Java’s Nganjuk district on Monday and kept the students and teacher overnight for questioning.

“Police detained 48 students and a teacher on Monday after the community reported unusual activity at the school and expressed concern about possible anarchic behaviour,” national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told reporters.

Amar said the school was “strongly suspected of conducting terrorism training”.

“Police also seized long-barreled rifles, ammunition and sharp weapons, including a cleaver, as well as books on jihad,” Amar said.

Indonesian police have conducted a series of terror raids in recent months, including a sweep across the island of Java in October, netting 11 suspects in a plan to attack the US embassy and other American targets.

Indonesia was rocked last decade by several deadly terror attacks blamed on the Al-Qaeda-linked network Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, mostly foreigners.

But a crackdown on militancy in the country has crippled JI, and smaller terror cells that have carried out low-impact attacks have emerged.

Malaysia police probe fresh Indonesia maid abuse

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian police are investigating a man for allegedly raping a 15-year-old Indonesian working for him, officials said Thursday, days after another maid accused three policemen of rape.

The cases have reportedly caused outrage in Indonesia. Ties between the two neighbours have been tense over frequent reports of abuse in recent years, causing Indonesia to temporarily stop sending maids to Malaysia in 2009.

Malaysia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the Indonesian in the latest case in Seremban, a town near the capital Kuala Lumpur, was raped, as well as tied up and left without food for four days.

Police are investigating her employer, who was arrested earlier this week, over the rape. The charge carries up to 20 years in prison.

“The government vehemently condemns this shameful, inhuman act,” the ministry said.

Seremban police chief Saiful Azly told AFP that the 15-year-old was in the country illegally and had worked in the household for three months.

Last week, three policemen in northern Penang state came under investigation for allegedly gang-raping an Indonesian woman after stopping her to check her papers.

Indonesia, the main provider of domestic workers for Malaysia, stopped sending maids to its Southeast Asian neighbour in 2009 after numerous abuse cases.

Jakarta announced last December it would lift the ban after the two countries agreed to better protect them, including allowing them one day off per week.

But few maids have reportedly arrived since then. Before the ban was enforced some 300,000 Indonesian women worked in Malaysian households.

Cambodia also imposed a ban on sending domestic workers to Malaysia last year following numerous abuse complaints.

UN condemns Indonesia’s increasing violence against Shiites

JAKARTA - The UN human rights chief condemned Tuesday violence and discrimination against Christians and Muslim minorities like Shiites in Indonesia, the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said she had met with leaders of Christian communities, as well as Islamic minority Shiite and Ahmadiyah sects, all of which have been targeted by hardliners in recent years.

“I was distressed to hear accounts of violent attacks, forced displacement, denial of identification cards and other forms of discrimination and harassment against them,” she told reporters in the capital Jakarta.

She warned Indonesia risked losing its culture of diversity and tolerance “if firm action is not taken to address increasing

levels of violence and hatred towards minorities and narrow and extremist interpretations of Islam”.

I n d o n e s i a ’s c o n s t i t u t i o n guarantees freedom of religion but rights groups say violence against minorities has been escalating since 2008 in the nation of 240 million people, nearly 90 percent of whom identify as Muslims, the vast majority Sunni.

Pillay recommended Indonesia repeal its blasphemy law from 1965, under which a Shiite cleric was jailed for two years in July for saying the Koran was not an authentic text and that the hajj pilgrimage was not obligatory.

She also called for the revocation of a 2008 ministerial decree that deemed Ahmadiyah “deviant” for believing in a prophet after Mohammed and banned Ahmadis from proselytising.

In May, a mob of 600 Islamic hardliners threw plastic bags filled with urine at an Indonesian church congregation marking the ascension of Christ.

In August 2011, an Indonesian court handed jail sentences of just a few months to 12 hardliners who clubbed to death three Ahmadiyah men as police looked on.

Shiite Muslims have become common targets for hardliners.

A mob of around 500 Sunni Muslims wielding machetes and sickles attacked a Shiite community in August, killing two and torching dozens of homes in eastern Java.

Pillay also expressed concern over sharia law in Aceh province -- where canings are common and a law on stoning was passed in 2009 -- saying enforcement was “arbitrary” and “discriminatory” against women, creating “an environment of intimidation and fear”.

Economists expressed relief that the figures did not show Germany sliding into reverse, but warned that clouds were darkening on the horizon.

Constantin Wirschke from Natixis bank said the third quarter figures were “as expected.” For the fourth quarter, however, he acknowledged: “We are not as optimistic.”

“In our view, Germany’s economy faces an uphill battle in Q4 trying to attain positive growth,” said the analyst.

So-called leading indicators of the economy, which aim to predict future performance, have pointed to a continued slowdown in the months ahead.

Toyota recalls vehicles for steering, pump defects Associated Press

TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 2.77 million vehicles around the world for a water pump problem and a steering shaft defect that may result in faulty steering — the latest in a spate of quality woes for Japan’s top automaker.

No accidents have been reported related to these two problems announced Wednesday, according to Toyota.

Some 1.51 million vehicles are being recalled for the steering defect in Japan and 1.25 million vehicles abroad — including 670,000 in the U.S. Affected models include the Prius hybrid, Corolla, Wish and other models produced from 2000 to 2011 in Japan, and from 2000 to 2009 overseas.

Of those vehicles, some 620,000 spanning five hybrid

models, including the Prius, have a defective water pump in addition to the steering shaft defect. Those vehicles were produced from 2001 to 2010 in Japan, and from 2003 to 2011 overseas. Another 10,000 vehicles with only a pump problem are also being recalled.

The latest recalls — affecting Toyota’s prized Prius hybrid, a symbol of its technological prowess — come on top of a recall last month for 7.43 million vehicles for a faulty powerwindow switch that could cause fires.

Toyota has been trying to fix its reputation after a series of massive recalls of 14 million vehicles over the last several years, mostly in the U.S., affecting faulty floor mats, braking and gas pedals.

RIM offers free voice calls over Wi-Fi with BBM

TORONTO — BlackBerry users will be able to make free voice calls over a Wi-Fi network using the popular BBM messaging service.

Research In Motion Ltd. announced Wednesday that it’s adding the feature to BBM. Users will be able to switch back and forth from a text chat to a voice call. A split-screen option will let them talk and text at the same time.

The new feature is a free update for existing customers and comes months before RIM introduces its new BlackBerry 10 smartphones, which are seen critical to RIM’s survival.

RIM surprised analysts in September when it announced that the number of BlackBerry subscribers grew, thanks in part to emerging markets and its popular BBM service. It’s struggling in North America as customers migrate to flashier iPhones and Android phone.

RIM stopped short of offering the BBM voice feature over wireless carriers’ own cellular networks. Doing so would have potentially created more congestion on cellular data networks and deprive carriers of revenue for voice calls. With the new feature, the free calls are limited to times and places where Wi-Fi is available.

The Canadian company said the BBM voice feature is especially attractive for developing markets. Unlike regular texts, BBM messages are not charged on a per-text basis.

Although RIM is struggling in North America, the BlackBerry continues to sell well in such markets as South Africa, Nigeria and Indonesia.

The BBM service has long been a reason for BlackBerry users to not defect to other smartphones but there are rival messaging services. There are more than 60 million BBM users worldwide.

RIM said the BBM voice update is currently available for BlackBerry smartphones running the BlackBerry 6 operating system or higher, with plans for BlackBerry 5 later. RIM’s latest phones run the 7 operating system. The next version, BlackBerry 10, will come soon after a Jan. 30 launch event.

Sanghyang Jaran dance is one of the sacred dances in Bali. In terms of its function, it is only performed in a series of sacred ceremonies in relation to trance, not intended for profane entertainment show. This concept also applies to Sanghyang Jaran dance growing and developing in the village of Bona. The Sanghyang Jaran dance functions as a medium to repel disaster afflicting the society. This Sanghyang Jaran dance almost has the same meaning as many other Sanghyang Dances like Sanghyang Dedari.

One of the community leaders of Bona Village doubling as Sanghyang Jaran artist, Made Sija, explained the emergence of Sanghyang Jaran dance was inspired by the incident of contagious diseases attacking the residents of Bona. Local residents suddenly fell sick and died instantly. They were very worried and finally looking for a medium, but they failed. People were then turning anxious or living through horrible ambience.

Triggered by such an atmosphere, people did not dare to leave the house. Each house was then marked off with thorny pandanus leaf and smeared with chalk in the form of cross sign. Anxiety of local community was very serious until they should leave the house while hitting coconut midrib onto the ground or any objects to generate noisy atmosphere. One of the aims of doing so was to drive out evil spirits from the Bona Village. Unfortunately, the endeavor was not successful, either, he explained.

Finally, local villagers gathered in the Puseh Temple, the abode of Lord Vishnu, to invoke protection and to expel the evil spirits. Suddenly, there were two girls possessed. They received vision from the deity instructing the devotees in attendance to make light music to accompany the dance. Since there was no gamelan instrument at that time, they only used a cappella along with vowel sounds of prayer and praise to Supreme God to apply for safety. One of them was by accompaniment of cak a cappella.

The holy spirits entering into the girls’ body were always changing.

Sometimes, they behaved finely (Sanghyang Dedari), sometimes on the opposite just like holding an object (Sanghyang Jaran). Strangely, while being still possessed, the girls asked to have a bath, not by water but by fire. As requested, the community kindled a fire with coconut fibers. Those who got possessed were even trampling on fire, but their legs did not catch fire. On seeing the fact, people were very

confident if the people dancing the Sanghyang dance were possessed by the spirit of the deities to dance the Sanghyang Jaran and Sanghyang Dedari, he said.

Very rare

In the development of Sanghyang Jaran dance today, many people use it for commercial purposes. However, the Sanghyang Jaran used to pamper tourists is not the one sanctified by devotees. Rather, it is the Sanghyang Jaran deliberately created as a performance, as existing in the Paripurna Dance Studio of Bona Village. Today, the performance of Sanghyang Dance at Bona Village, particularly for tourist attraction, is very rare because some other stages have already performed the same dance.

Made Sija, owner of the Paripurna Dance Studio of Bona said the rules of Sanghyang Dance were begun by notification ritual to deities. Then, it was resumed with burning incense, and then the incense smokes encapsulated the Sanghyang dancers, while the Kukus Arum sacred song was chanted by some residents repeatedly until the dancers getting possessed. If they had been getting possessed, their body would tremble involuntarily. Having been possessed by the Sanghyang Jaran, the dancers jumped into a smoldering campfire, kicking the fire here and there and the singing of the song was even more excited. As long as the song was chanted, the dancers continued to dance until leaving the arena as if they were pursued. “Movement of this dance has no particular patterns and it can be danced so perfectly or in harmony. The Sanghyang Jaran as implied by the name jumps, runs fast and heehaws like the cry of horses,” he explained.

In practice, some dancers even came occasionally in a hurry though they happened to be at home because they had simultaneous spiritual contact when putting into a trance. Without wearing hobbyhorse they directly ran toward the fire. Physically, people saw it a fire, but the dancers of Sanghyang Jaran in unconscious condition saw the fire as water so they did not feel hot when touching or kicking the fire.

When the dance began, there was only a fire on coconut fibers burned in the midst of the darkness. There should be no lights on. Based on past experiences, when the Sanghyang Jaran dancers saw the lights, they would run amuck and in closed eyes they ran toward the light and wanted to take it. After turning off the lights, the dancers would return to dance the Sanghyang Jaran at the campfire area. (dar)

DENPASAR - Commission D of the Denpasar House criticized the classroom building rehabilitation project of the SDN 26 Dangin Puri elementary school, East Denpasar. It was responded to the report from the local school committee if the project was abandoned by the workers. As a result, the project execution turned dormant up to two months. Meanwhile, the classrooms dismantled by the workers of the contractor were abandoned until now without any further handling.

“I indeed received the report from the school committee. In response to this issue, we in the Commission D will coordinate this matter with the Commission B handling the development issues,” said Secretary of Commission D of the Denpasar House, AA Putu Gede Wibawa, when contacted on Tuesday (Nov 13).

As a follow-up, he said, his party would organize an internal meeting in the Commission D. Furthermore, his party also planned to summon the school authority, school committee, principal and the Denpasar Education Agency.

“We will make coordination with all the parties concerned. Do not let this problem harm the students of the school. By all means, the dormant classroom potentially makes the students learn uncomfortably. Parents of the students will also object if the classroom

rehabilitation project is dormant for too long,” he said.

When confirmed separately, Chief Committee of the SDN 26 Dangin Puri, Made Darmaja, justified if he had reported the dormant classroom rehabilitation project. He said the project was worked on by CV Karya Tehnik Mandiri under supervision of CV Amrita Tehnik with contract No.027/3113/Dikpora. Duration of the project execution was 90 days from September 10, 2012 with a total budget of IDR 246.4 million.

“As a matter of fact, since the specified contract date the contractor should have started its work.

So far, there are no workers. Such conditions have occurred over the past two months,” he said.

According to Darmaja, initially there were a number of workers who started to dismantle three units of classroom that should

be rehabilitated last September.

In fact, they only dismantled the buildings, while there were no works after that. “I have asked the contractor. It was said there was no budget. It is funny, isn’t it? The budget has been allocated and approved by the government,” he complained.

In addition, his party also assessed if there had been mistake in the planning because the rehabilitation seemed to be patchy or had been done randomly. For example, the classroom’s roof of grade two was leaking. Before repairing the roof, the contractor had even installed the plafond.

Terrorists alone can be captured, let alone the perpetrator of this incident, except there is a conspiracy and patterns of power moving and dominating the case,” he said.

Furthermore, this academician from the Mahendradatta University appreciated the activity of Gendo in the Walhi in advocating the environmental cases in Bali.

Considering such abuse case, Gendo righteously gets a protection.

“It’s legitimate what Gendo and his friends carried out in advocating the environmental cases. Moreover, it has complied with the corridors and the action was not anarchic. He is worth getting a legal protection,” he said.

Although the persecution against Gendo was assessed to become a scourge to environmental activists, Fahmi hoped they keep fighting for the nature of Bali.

SINGARAJA - One of the reasons why travelers are reluctant to spend holidays in Buleleng is the distance from the airport is quite far and passing through winding route. Far distance and the route causing carsick sometimes makes travelers saturated while taking a trip to North Bali. To overcome the obstacle, the Buleleng Government should have a specific strategy so that travelers will not get bored.

For instance, it can be resolved by building a stopover on the peak area or upstream region, precisely at the T-junction of Wanagiri village.

Discussion on the distance and winding route with the ascending and steep descending route has indeed become a discourse since many years ago. For several times, there has a suggestion to build a toll road through the hills or toll road hovering over the abyss. However, they are only limited to a discourse.

Until now, the route from Denpasar to Singaraja via Bedugul remains to make people carsick. If smooth road cannot be built, there is indeed another strategy to cope with the saturation of tourists when passing through long route. It is by building a stopover on the peak, precisely at the T-junction of Wanagiri.

So far, the area has often been taken advantage as stopover by tourists who come from Denpasar to Singaraja or otherwise.

SEOUL - A South Korean air force pilot was killed Thursday when his jet trainer crashed into a mountain as he rehearsed moves for an upcoming flying display, the defence ministry said.

The T-50B aircraft manned by a 32year-old flight lieutenant hit the side of the mountain in the northeastern county of Hoengseong during a training flight for an air show, a ministry spokesman said.

“The pilot was found dead near the crash site,” he said, adding an investigation was underway into the cause of the accident.

The crash sparked a brush fire which was quickly extinguished by firefighters, Yonhap news agency said.

Some witnesses had reported seeing a parachute, which originally led rescuers to believe the pilot might have survived.

Military officials said it was the firstever crash involving a T-50B, which is a variant of South Korea’s first home-made supersonic aircraft, the T-50, and is used by the air force’s Black Eagle air show team.

Since its maiden flight in 2002, the T-50 has been produced in aerobatic and combat variants, including the TA-50 light attack aircraft which South Korea has been actively pushing for export.

Japan, North Korea reopen stalled bilateral talks

TOKYO — Japan and North Korea began bilateral talks Thursday in Mongolia that Tokyo hopes will shed light on a series of decades-old abductions.

The talks in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator are scheduled to last through Friday. In August, lower-level negotiators from Japan and North Korea held the countries’ first bilateral talks in four years, but made little progress.

Japan wants information on the abductions of Japanese citizens by North

Korean agents in the 1970s and ‘80s. Japan believes at least one abductee may still be alive and in the North, though North Korea denies this. Five abductees were returned to Japan in 2002.

Japan and North Korea do not have formal diplomatic relations. The abduction issue and concerns over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs have long strained ties.

Japanese officials indicated before the start of the talks that they expected them to be tough and not likely to lead to any immediate breakthroughs.

North Korea’s official media provided few details, reporting only that they were intended to deal with issues of mutual interest.

Japan has imposed strict sanctions against the North and cut off most economic and cultural exchanges in 2006 after a missile launch.

Tensions heightened again earlier this year when the North launched a rocket that it said carried a satellite, but that Japan and other countries criticized as a thinly disguised test of long-range missile technology. The launch failed just after takeoff.

JAKARTA - Indonesian fashion designers paired clean, urban styles with traditional batiks and designs inspired by ancient temples at the sixth annual Jakarta Fashion Week.

Local designers in Asia’s fourth largest economy looked to the past and their heritage to gain a foothold in the international fashion market, a hope expressed in the week’s theme “Indonesia Today, The World Tomorrow.”

“This collection sums up 40 years of my work,” said Josephine Komara, who is also known as Obin, a noted batik artisan who showcased eclectic designs with radiant silks.

Although Obin has shops in Singapore and Japan, she is most successful in her own country.

There are other success stories like hers but Indonesia lacks a brand with global recognition, unlike its Southeast Asian neighbours such as the Malaysian Vincci and Singapore’s Charles & Keith.

But the London-based Centre for Fashion Enterprise (CFE) hopes to change this, propelling young Indonesian designers to the international stage through a mentoring program. Experts say one of the biggest problems is inexperience and a short history of aiming at international markets.

“By going international, it means they have to be ready for

what the market needs,” said Toby Meadows, a CFE consultant. “It might be overwhelming for them because creating winter wear might never have crossed their minds. But if you have a brand, the buyers expect you to have a Fall/ Winter collection as well.”

The fundamentals for international recognition are already there. Designers Yosafat Dwi Kuniawan and Jeffrey Tan offered high fashion and urban cut pret a porter collections, while Barli Asmara and Albert Yanuar went for glamourous dresses with a costume-like touch.

Dian Pelangi, in a nod to local fashion, showed contemporary designs incorporating the hijab that many Indonesian women use to cover their heads.

All are among eight local designers and labels in CFE’s mentoring programme, which they hope will propel them onto the international scene.

None of the designers have dealt with international buyers, although Barli and Yosafat have showed their collections in fashion weeks overseas. Most are still struggling with branding and business plans

over creativity and design ideas.

“I went for a showcase in China Fashion Week in 2009, but there wasn’t any actual trading,” said Yosafat, 23, whose designs are inspired by the ancient Javanese Borobudur temple.

“I simply don’t know how to sell and deliver and I’ve made some big mistakes in my business.”

The CFE mentoring programme, which is backed by the Indonesian and British governments, includes three years of training in branding, pricing, production and marketing. It also helps connect young designers with prospective buyers and to decide which market suits them best.

One success story is Ardistia, who started her label when she was based in New York and later expanded to the Indonesian market with her clean, urban look. Her designs have been shown in department stores in the United States, Canada and France.

Given the growing wealth and middle classes of Asia, Meadows encourages Indonesian designers to broaden their outlook and not just target the most established, traditional fashion markets.

PARIS - French fashion giant Chanel said Wednesday it was not appealing a 200,000-euro fine slapped by a court for stealing a design from a knitwear supplier, bringing to an end a David versus Goliath case.

“The house of Chanel has taken a decision not to lodge an appeal.

It is of the view that this ...very complex and specific case must end,” a terse statement said.

A Paris court in September overturned a 2009 ruling clearing Chanel and slapped the fine, saying the house had designed a vest that was a “slavish copy” of a crochet design by the local knitwear company.

The case pitted World Tricot, a now-bankrupt small firm that

manufactured high-end knits, against Chanel and was seen as a test of the rights enjoyed by skilled artisans toiling in a luxury industry dominated by the big players.

World Tricot founder Carmel Colle was seeking 2.5 million euros (3.7 million dollars) from Chanel for alleged counterfeit after she spotted in a shop window a Chanel vest with a crochet design that she claimed was hers.

The simple cable design with black edging had been previously submitted to Chanel’s studio and rejected, Colle claims.

In 2009, the Paris commercial tribunal ruled that Chanel had not stolen the design although it did order it to pay 400,000 euros in damages to World Tricot for breaking the contract.

Pawiba plans to increase transport rates Bali Post

DENPASAR - The Bali Tourist Transport Association (Pawiba) plans to raise the transport rates in line with the option of the gradual subsidized fuel price hike as much as IDR 500 every three months in 2013.

Chairman of the Pawiba, Bagus Soediana, said the fuel price hike would automatically have an impact on the increase of transport rates.

However, the rate increase of the Pawiba would not exactly match the percentage of the increase in fuel price.

“Every fuel price hike will definitely be followed by the rate increase. However, the amount is not necessarily equal to the increase of the other transport fare,” said Bagus Soediana in Denpasar.

He said the increase in fuel price would have an impact on the rising price of spare parts. For example, the price of tire would go up and so would the price of lubricating oil. To that end, the Pawiba did not dare to set the rate increase yet. “Probably, within a week after the increase we can make decision about the percentage of the price hike,” he said.

Similarly, the fuel price hike was also estimated to have an impact on the price increase of new tourist vehicle or transport. The increase in the vehicle price would affect the calculation of the fleet rejuvenation cost of tourist transport entrepreneur.

“Pawiba must calculate the fuel price hike with the tourist transport rates.

Obviously, the rates of Pawiba will be reviewed and adjusted to the fuel price hike,” he said.

It was estimated, the rate increase of Pawiba would have implications on the business of travel agencies as users of the tourist transport services, especially in the matter of tour package price.

Meanwhile, the economist Prof.

Dr. Gede Sri Darma, DBA, said the government plan to raise the subsidized fuel price at IDR 500 every three months over the next year would clearly become a blow to people. This policy would also cause a wider gap. It happened because the existing weak purchasing power would be exacerbated by the rise in fuel price.

“The fuel price hike amidst the unequal prosperity would make the burden the Indonesian people harder, especially for the category of poor people because the cost of living covered is increasingly higher,” he said.

Price increase in the subsidized fuel would also significantly influence the lifestyle and life fulfillment pattern of the basic needs of the Indonesian people. It was triggered by the increase that was not followed by an increase in the level of welfare or income. “At least, the increase in fuel price affects the price of basic needs up to 5 percent with the inflation rate of over 50 percent,” he concluded. NEGARA - According to the Maritime, Fishery and Forestry Department of Jembrana, the supply of freshwater fish in Bali has reached eight tonnes per day.

“Therefore, we are targeting to create 1,000 freshwater fish ponds in two to three years,” said the Head of Maritime, Fishery, and Forestry Department of Jembrana, Dwi Maharimbawa.

He said that some of the restaurant entrepreneurs are keen on cultivating freshwater fish such as catfish, carp and tilapia but are afraid of investing in this venture because of the uncertainty of fish production.

According to Maharimbawa, freshwater fish cultivation is uncertain because it is not properly organised in terms of maintenance and marketing.

“The residents do not jump into freshwater fish cultivation without proper research on the technical maintenance and the market share. In addition, the capital and income are not balanced, resulting in losses,” he said.

“Bali Process countries must

take more concrete steps in the future to optimize Bali Process cooperation,” Director General of Multilateral Cooperation at the Foreign Ministry Hasan Kleib said when opening the forum.

They also must use the commemoration of 10 years of the forum’s existence to reflect what they have achieved and what they will do to deal with challenges facing the Bali Process particularly in tackling people smuggling and trafficking in Asia and the Pacific, he said.

“Right now the biggest challenge facing the Bali Process is how to deal with the comprehensively rising flow of irregular migrants,” he said.

Rabies dog worried residents

NEGARA - Outbreaks of rabies through dog broke out at Baler Bale Agung village, Negara subdistrict. A number of dogs were tested positive to rabies and bit a dozen people over the past week. This situation made the locals restless. The Jembrana Agriculture, Livestock and Plantation Agency performed euthanasia or elimination to dozens of stray dogs in the densely populated neighborhood.

The agency stated that a number of dogs attacking and biting people over the past week were tested positive to rabies. To prevent the widespread epidemic through the other stray dogs, the agency finally eliminated the dogs as anticipation by shooting them with drugs. One of the residents, Made Suarsa, revealed to be restless with the existence of rabid dogs that attacked people. Moreover, the disease was harmless to humans. So, he welcomed the anticipative measure through elimination of a number of stray dogs carried out by relevant agencies.

A number of stray dogs and dogs that had previously interacted with rabid dogs were eliminated. Local village authorities and hamlet chief

also made an outreach to residents regarding the hazards of rabies. The elimination was once constrained because some dog owners did not allow the elimination of their pet dog though theirs had interacted or fought against rabid dogs that previously showed an indication of rabies.

One causer was because of there are many breeders, big (manufacture) and small (individuals) yet the much growing ones were those big manufacturers from outside Bali. The high increase of Bali individual breeders and big manufacturers moved to Bali were also due to the stoppage of any bird distribution from outside Bali due to bird flu that happened. Yet it seemed a number of living chicken supplies to Bali still are sent since the stoppage which is unfair to smaller companies.

Hard Rock Hotel Bali goes pink during the month of October with Pinktober events held for one full month. Pinktober is charity event dedicated to support the fight against Breast Cancer where funds are raised from the sale of the Pinktober Room, “Pink is Punk” cocktail and Pinktober Party Donation.

Pinktober parties were held at Centerstage featuring national and international musicians and also a fashion show

by La Senza held every Monday. The month opened with briliant performance from The Cab, from USA. SHE, the famous female band from Indonesia flooded the centerstage with their popular songs for their fans. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

People magazine on Wednesday declared Hollywood actor Channing Tatum the “sexiest man alive” in 2012.A muscular 32-year-old former model, Tatum has appeared in “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” “21 Jump Street,” and “Magic Mike,” among other films.

Upon hearing he had been picked for the annual honor, Tatum was modest, the gossip magazine said.

“Y’all are messing with me,” it quoted him as saying.

His wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, told the magazine that her husband

sculpts and likes to quote 19th century author and poet Edgar Allan Poe, as well as offer her massages.

Previous laureates of People’s award include actors George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt.

‘Gangnam Style’ star joins Madonna onstage in NYC Korean pop star PSY joined the pop icon Tuesday night during her second show this week at Madison Square Garden in New York. They danced to his pop culture anthem “Gangnam Style” and to her jam “Music” in front of nearly 20,000 people.

Madonna said PSY flew “all the way from Frankfurt, Germany this morning.” She said she was a big fan of the rapper and loved his suit, which was bright red.

PSY added that he’s had a lot of experiences in the last few months, and that performing with Madonna topped his list.

Kaley Cuoco gets a bang out of ‘Big Bang Theory’ “I know this sounds like it’s not true,” says Kaley Cuoco, “but as huge as the show is, it’s just part of my life — not my whole life.”

“The Big Bang Theory” is huge all right. Now in its sixth season (airing Thursdays on CBS at 8 p.m. EST), it reigns as TV’s hottest sitcom, and now hotter than ever with an average 19 million viewers each week.

As virtually every viewer knows by now, “Big Bang” centers on a gaggle of geeky Cal Tech scientists, chief among them Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki), apartment mates who, by great good sitcom fortune, live across the hall from Penny, played by Cuoco.

Penny aspires to be an actress but pays the rent by waiting tables at a Cheesecake Factory.

Unlike the boys, Penny is no genius. But neither is she a dumb blonde, which is key to the genius of “Big Bang.”

“She’s obviously not book-smart,” says Cuoco, “but she’s street smart and good-hearted and can make fun of herself. The producers never made her ditzy. Maybe she doesn’t always get what the guys are talking about. But in that way she represents most of the world.”

Previously, an archaeologist says a structure that is believed to be the remains of an ancient Hindu temple has been unearthed on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali.

Suantika says workers digging a drainage basin last week in eastern Denpasar, Bali’s capital, at first discovered a large stone about 1 meter (3 feet) underground.

Excavation teams have since uncovered a 57-meter (62-yard) structure that is believed to be the temple’s foundation.

The find is still being analyzed, but given the shape and characteristics of the materials used, Swantika says he believes it was built sometime between the 13th and 15th centuries. He added that it is also thought to be the largest ancient temple ever discovered in Bali.
