WASHINGTON - The White House is standing tough on President Barack Obama’s plans to meet with the Dalai Lama, firmly rejecting Chinese pressure to snub him as rows escalate between Washington and Beijing.

The Chinese government reacted Wednesday to the plans by saying it “resolutely opposes” the Dalai Lama’s visit to the United States and any of his meetings with US leaders. “We urge the US side to clearly recognize the high sensitivity of the Tibet issue and handle related issues carefully and appropriately to avoid causing more harm to Sino-US ties,” foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a statement. Days after defying Beijing with a 6.4-billion-dollar weapons package for Taiwan, the White House insisted Tuesday that China address human rights concerns in Tibet. “The president told China leaders during his trip last year that he would meet with the Dalai Lama, and he intends to do so,” White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters. “The Dalai Lama is an internationally respected religious and cultural leader, and the president will meet with him in that capacity.” The Dalai Lama is due in the

Customs and Excise officers of Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban, last Monday (Feb 1) afternoon, raided a warehouse of imported alcoholic drinks. Spirits warehouse suspected to be illegal is located on Jalan Buana Raya Gang Buana Mekar IA No. 6 Denpasar. Officers also managed to secure hundreds of different brands of alcohol bottles as evidence. The warehouse raid took place at 5.00 pm Local Time. A number of Customs and Excise officers moved and shoot the warehouse, after receiving information from the public. “Communities around the warehouse claimed suspicious
of the activities of people dwelling in the house,” said Section Chief of Prosecution and Investigation, Bagus Endro Wibowo, last Monday (Feb 1) night. It is said, a number of cars in and out of the barn. The freights transported were suspected to be the wrong things. Based on such information, the officers immediately executed the raid by dogging one of the cars coming into the scene. Officers were conducting searches in the warehouse. Unfortunately, in the raid, officers could not find the owner of the illegal goods. The owner was said to go to Vietnam. Meanwhile, at least 500 bottles of different brands of alcohol were secured by the of-
ficers. “The owner is named Hendrik. It is said he (Hendrik-ed) is now in Vietnam,” he explained to journalists. Officers also secured two attendants consisting of Mangisi Haris, 22, and Syafrudin Haraba, 22, serving as the warehouse keeper. They also asked for testimony at the office of Customs and Excise. “We still go into the investigation. Clearly, our evidence is secured and an alcoholic beverage belonged to type B and C. We just stay expanding it,” he said. Described, all bottles of alcohol were using false customs label. Therefore, the existing excise tax on the bottle belonged to old customs of output in 2008 and 2009. Meanwhile,
the Customs and Excise have issued a new tax, of course, in 2010. “ Such Customs tax label is a fake,” he said as he revealed the brands secured namely the Vaccari, Jimbeam, Bols Blue, Cointreu, Gordon’s, Chivas Regal, Black Label, Gallian, Kahlua, Pernod and Dramboei. From the results of temporary examination, those illegal spirits were sent from Singapore via Jakarta, Surabaya, and then sent to Denpasar. Officers ensnared the perpetrator by Law No. 39/2007 on Excise with the threat of one to five years imprisonment. Officers also know, perpetrator did not have the serial number of entrepreneur on goods subject to excise charge or NPPBKC. (kmb21)
