Bali News Hard to Find VAR, Allocation Fund of IDR 10 B Ran Out Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Grievances on the running out of anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) often ensued because it was difficult to find out VAR nowadays. Such difficulty was caused by the allocation fund of IDR 10 billion to purchase VAR has run out. On the other hand, to propose additional budget by the end of financial year 2009 is very hard because its proposal should be submitted to central government.

Deputy Head of Commission IV of Bali House, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, revealed that matter, last Tuesday (Nov 3) at Renon. Previously, Governor of Bali Mangku Pastika stated the diminishing of allocation fund for the purchase of VAR. He mentioned that to give additional fund for the purchase of VAR from Bali Regional Budget 2009 was difficult because the financial year 2009 nearly terminated.

Except, Governor of Bali dared issue the budget preceding the approval of Regional Budget Draft 2010. Meanwhile, the settlement of the fund should ask the approval of Minister of Home Affairs. “Therefore, it is not easy to issue additional fund from Regional Budget to prepay the need of VAR,” he said.

chase has run out before the end of 2009, the House has proposed additional budget on the main Regional Budget Draft 2010 amounting to IDR 15 billion. Previously, the budget allocated at IDR 10 billion consisted of main Regional Budget of IDR 6 billion and revision of Regional Budget of IDR 4 billion.

Other difficulty was that residents did not know that patients requiring VAR should be referred to Sanglah Hospital. This condition resulted in confusion why regional (regency) hospital did not provide VAR. Previously, Governor of Bali Mangku Pastika stated the allocation fund of VAR nearly ran out. He also mentioned that a patient requiring a treatment and VAR at least needed a cost of IDR 750,000 because the patient at lest required VAR for four times. Meanwhile, once administration of vaccine cost IDR 115,000.

Insufficiency of VAR was also caused by the fact that there is only one distributor of VAR in Bali. Similarly, in national level, there is only one importer of VAR. This condition made VAR rare and hard to obtain.

Head of Bali Health Services, N Suteja, said that his party would order 8,600 vials of VAR to cover the shortage. (029)

Again, Sanglah Hospital Treats Rabies Suspect Patient Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Since last Monday (Nov 2), Nusa Indah Room again treated a patient of rabies suspect or alleged to suffer from rabies. The patient was Komang Ayu Pradnyawati (20), a resident of Jalan Kaswari Penatih.

Ayu came to Sanglah Hospital around 6 p.m. Local Time and up to last Tuesday she was under treatment in Nusa Indah Room of Sanglah Hospital.

Secretary of Rabies Management Team of Sanglah Hospital, Ken Wirasandhi, when contacted on last Tuesday (Nov 3) justified if Nusa Indah Room was treating a patient with allegation to rabies. According to Ken, the patient came with sighs like vomiting and numb on the wound of ex dog’s bite at her right hand. She was bitten on right hand few days ago. “Though she has re-

covered now, patient remained to feel a numb on her wound,” said Ken. It was explained further, though dog once bit her, but according to Ken, patient did not undergo wound treatment or anti-rabies vaccination.

Indeed, her wound was only a slight scratch and not deep. “Patient did not treat her wound to health clinic nearby and did not obtain any vaccination,” observed Ken. However, up to last Tuesday, based on information, health condition of Ayu remained fine. In the meantime, the VAR stock at Sanglah Hospital, according to Ken, could meet the demand of community. At that time, the stock was 400 vials. “As usual, Sanglah Hospital will order additional VAR if stock left is 150 vials. It is committed to anticipate the running out,” added Ken. (kmb24)

This indicated the development of Bali tourism has attained normal condition whereas the world was currently engulfed by monetary crisis. However, the current normal condition was shadowed by the worries about the epidemic of

swine flu (H1N1) spreading out to several countries including Indonesia and Bali.

The case of bomb explosion at JW Marriott Hotel and Ritz-Carlton in Jakarta on last July 17, 2009 was also once worried to have an impact in the decrease of foreign tourist visit to Indonesia including Bali.

Hundreds of Marga Residents Almost Attacked Tabanan Resort Police Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Having been offended because their village apparatus (prajuru) was interrogated, some 700 residents of Marga Customary Village almost attacked Tabanan Resort Police, last Tuesday (Nov 3). They intended to give support to one of their village apparatuses, I Gusti Putu Mudana, reported to police on the allegation to have destroyed a shrine by Nyoman Nita.

Chief of Tabanan Resort Police, AA Made Sudana, in person met the residents so they did not come to Headquarter of Resort Police. However, those residents seemed dissatisfied on the case. The incident was the aftermath of land dispute between the Marga Customary Village and Nita. It was triggered by a land dispute of 1.50 are where Customary village claimed that the land under control of Nita belonged to village property whose total extent was 20.5 are.

When village apparatus would like to submit the certificate of the land, it was known that 1.5 are of the land has been made certificate under the name of Nyoman Nita. Last February 2009, hundreds of residents once came to the Tabanan Land Registry Services (KP) to ask clarification about the matter.

Last October, customary apparatus, I Gusti Putu Mudana, dismantled a shrine located in front of a shop belonging to submitter I Nyoman Nita.

Mudana dismantled the shrine because he considered the land belonged to customary village. In addition, customary village has established a Melanting Temple (for trader profession) that would be used for all traders at local market and all shrines were no more required as have been united in the temple that has been just inaugurated.

Resource person of investigator at Tabanan Resort Police mentioned that the party of customary village reported I Nyoman Nita with allegation to have counterfeited the land certificate. Additionally, the adjacent party on the land certificate was Ni Wayan Regis who is also the wife of Nita. Furthermore, suspicion also arose because on the certificate was mentioned that the border stake was under the name of Nyoman Sriasih— daughter of Nita. According to resource person, both cases were under process. However, residents of Marga customary village seemed dissatisfied regarding to the interrogation toward their village apparatus based on the report of Nita to Marga Sector Police. Marga Sector Police originally handled the case of shrine destruction, but due to worries about the anger of local residents, the case was then handed over to Tabanan Resort Police.

On last Tuesday, some 700 resi-

dents were planning to go to Tabanan Resort Police. However, Sudana visited them first in the purpose to calm down the anger of local residents.

Finally, a meeting could be held between Chief of Tabanan Resort Police and Marga residents at the outer courtyard of local Puseh Temple.

Chief AA Made Sudana asked in order residents could trust the case handling to police department. He promised to resolve the case professionally and expected that resident could trust the performance of his party.

Additionally, he invoked in order local resident cancelled their intention to throng the Resort Police as it could be taken advantage by unauthorized parties. “I hope that residents could trust the performance of police.

to come to Tabanan Resort Police for his clarification,” asked Sudana.

Monitoring at location on last Tuesday indicated that hundreds of residents from several ages, men and women in middle customary attires looked to prepare their departure to Tabanan Resort Police. A number of residents said that they would come to HQ of Tabanan Resort Police to put into question about land dispute between their customary village and shop’s owner under the name I Nyoman Nita. Up to this moment, the case did not show significant progress.

Asia-wide Governor to Enjoy Seawalker in Sanur Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Governor throughout Asia enjoyed marine tourism in the form of Seawalker, namely having promenade undersea at Sanur Beach, right in front of Puri Santrian Hotel, last Tuesday (Nov 3).

Governors having the opportunity to have adventure into the sea were Made Mangku Pastika (Governor of Bali), Mrs. Neranjala Pushpa Kumari Balasuriya (Governor of Southern Sri Lanka), Ms. Katsuko Asato (Deputy Governor of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan), Mr. Jiang Sixon (Deputy Governor of Hainan, China) and Mr. Yang JoHoon (Deputy Governor of Jeju, Korea).

Having experienced the undersea panorama, Governor Mangku Pastika admitted that undersea view of Sanur Beach was very beautiful. He expected by such coral reef plantation, habitat of fish and other marine biota would grow and develop rapidly. “We want the fish living at Sanur waters would feel homey and could develop flourishingly,” said Mangku Pastika.

He expected the marine panorama of Sanur Beach could draw many tourists so it could

give income to local community.

“I hope that Bali community would be getting more prosperous because Bali is renowned as tourist destination,” he expected.

In the meantime, Marketing Advisor of Club Aqua, Hening Sukarno, managing the Bali Seawalker Tours at Puri Santrian Hotel, said that Seawalker denoted the first marine walking tour in Indonesia, chiefly in Bali in 2000. The enjoyers of undersea panorama should use special helmet and could interact right away with undersea animals like fish, nemo shell and coral reef.

The enjoyers of sea walking dived for 30 minutes and guided by professional and experienced divers. Saudi soldier shot dead in attack by ‘Yemen infiltrators’ Agence France-Presse

RIYADH - Alleged armed infiltrators from Yemen killed one Saudi soldier and injured another 11 in an attack near the country’s southern border, Saudi Arabia said on Wednesday.

The attack took place early on Tuesday in the mountainous border region of Jabal al-Dukhan, across from an area where Yemeni forces have been fighting Zaidi Shiite rebels for weeks, according to a statement on the official SPA news agency.

“Armed men infiltrated at Jabal al-Dukhan... and opened fire on the Border Patrol with an assortment of weapons, killing one and injuring 11 others,” SPA reported citing an unidentified government spokesman.

A Saudi interior ministry official contacted by AFP said he had no information on whether any of the attackers were injured or captured in Tuesday’s attack, and said they had not yet been publicly identified.

said that on Monday evening they “gained full control of the Jabal alDukhan area between the Yemeni and Saudi Arabian borders,” following a confrontation in which Yemeni security forces were defeated and their weapons seized.

On Monday the rebels, also known as Huthis, accused Riyadh of permitting Yemeni government troops to launch attacks against them from a Saudi security installation in Jabal al-Dukhan.

Saudi authorities have “allowed the Yemeni army to use a Saudi base in Jabal al-Dukhan from which it launched attacks,” the rebels said in an e-mailed statement received by AFP. “We advise the Saudi regime to remain impartial and not allow the Yemeni army to use its territories to attack us, because we would be otherwise forced to retaliate,” they added.

It is not the first time that Zaidi rebels have accused neighbouring Saudi Arabia of aiding the Yemeni army, which launched an all-out offensive on the rebels’ stronghold in the Saada region on August 11.

TEHRAN - Thousands of Iranians staged a noisy anti-US rally in Tehran Wednesday to mark the 30th anniversary of the storming of the American embassy by students, as police and opposition supporters clashed nearby.

US President Barack Obama meanwhile said in a statement marking the anniversary of the event that sparked decades of hostility between America and Iran that the Islamic republic “must choose” whether to open the door to opportunity and prosperity.

Huge crowds from early morning descended on the embassy complex in central Tehran, chanting slogans such as “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

They also smashed up posters of the American “Uncle Sam”

symbol and chanted “The blood in our veins is a gift to our leader” — a reference to Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The crowd was constantly being swelled by people arriving on foot and by bus, witnesses said.

About a kilometre (mile) away at Haft-e-Tir square in the heart of the capital, riot police armed with batons and firing teargas moved in as several hundred opposition supporters attempted to stage an anti-government protest. Witnesses said the protesters, who were chanting “Death to the dictator,” refused to disperse and dozens were beaten arrested.

Opposition supporters have since June been staging protests at every opportunity in Tehran against the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a presidential vote they claim was massively rigged.

NEW YORK - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg won reelection Tuesday in an unexpectedly tight race, after the media tycoon spent a record amount of his own fortune to dominate the campaign.

Bloomberg had been forecast to win by double digits, but squeaked by with 51 percent against 46 percent for his Democratic challenger Bill Thompson, with nearly all votes counted.

In his victory speech, Bloomberg said it had been “a hard-fought victory in a very difficult year.”

“Conventional wisdom says historically, third terms haven’t been too successful,” he said, “but we’ve spent the last eight years defying conventional wisdom.”

Bloomberg is an independent, but ran on the Republican ballot. Thompson received almost no support from President Barack Obama’s camp.

The 67-year-old mayor, who first took office in 2001, is widely credited with turning once gritty and chaotic New York into one of the cleanest, safest and most efficient US cities.

He has overseen a surge in luxury developments, barred traffic from teeming Times Square, made restaurants display calorie counts and banned smoking in bars, with a view to extending the ban to city parks.

Yet two controversies marked his path to a third four-year term in a city reeling from the Wall Street crash.

One was the astounding use of his fortune, estimated at 17.5 billion dollars by Forbes.

He burned through about a million dollars a day in the final weeks, with the total bill forecasted to exceed 100 million dollars, outspending Thompson by more than 10:1.

TOKYO - The only suspect in the murder of a 22-year-old British woman in Japan more than two years ago is reported to have undergone plastic surgery, a news report said Wednesday.

Tatsuya Ichihashi, 30, is wanted in connection with the killing of Lindsay Ann Hawker, an English teacher who was found dead in a sand-filled bathtub on the balcony of his apartment near Tokyo in March 2007.

Photos of Ichihashi have been plastered on walls in police and train stations across Japan, but police have failed to catch the man who is officially wanted on charges of abandoning a body.

The Asahi daily, quoting unnamed sources involved in the investigation, reported that Ichihashi had visited a hospital in Osaka last month for cosmetic surgery.

Police have examined photographs provided by the hospital and believe their patient was Ichihashi.

The wanted man failed to show for

a follow-up appointment.

Detectives involved in the case were being sent to the western city, the report said.

The family of Hawker, who had been working in Japan as an English teacher, have repeatedly visited the country, most recently in March when they voiced their frustration at police for failing to catch the suspect.

Police in June raised to more than 100,000 dollars the cash reward for information leading to the arrest of Ichihashi.

News Australia’s ‘Bondi caveman’ accused of rape Agence France-Presse

SYDNEY - An Australian vagrant known as the “Bondi caveman” in honour of his clifftop home at the world-famous beach has been arrested on allegations of rape, police said Wednesday.

Peter James Millhouse, who also goes by the names Jhiymy Mhiyles and Jimmy Twohats, was taken into custody late Tuesday after a woman accused him of raping her at the rocky ledge overlooking Bondi Beach that he calls home.

“About 10:00 pm police were called to Marks Park at the northern end of Bondi Beach,” police said in a statement.

“A woman told police she had

been sexually assaulted by a man at a location nearby.”

Millhouse has been living in a beachside squat made of tarpaulin and rope and rigged with a pirate flag since the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and survives on handouts of food and money made from poetry he writes.

The wild-bearded Millhouse made international headlines in 2007 when the local council backed down from plans to evict him from the affluent suburb after a public outcry.

A local magistrate refused to release him on bail on the rape charge, saying that “returning to that cliff face is not an option.”

He will remain in custody until at least December 22.

SHANGHAI - China has given the green light for Walt Disney Co. to build its long-awaited first theme park on the mainland in Shanghai, after a decade of negotiations, both sides said.

The announcement of the deal, which would be one of the biggest ever foreign investments in China, comes less than two weeks before US President Barack Obama makes his first official visit here, starting November 15 in Shanghai.

Neither side disclosed any figures, or gave a time frame for reaching a final agreement, but previous reports have said the US entertainment giant will invest 3.6 billion dollars in the 10-square-kilometre (four-square mile) park.

“China is one of the most dynamic, exciting and important countries in the world, and this approval marks a very significant milestone for The Walt Disney Company in mainland China,” Disney president and CEO Robert Iger said.

Approval of the project would “enable Disney and its Shanghai partners to move forward toward a final agreement to build and operate the park and begin preliminary development work,” the company said in a statement.

The new Chinese venture would be a “Magic Kingdom-style theme park with characteristics tailored to the Shanghai region,” it added.

proval of the project application report (PAR) had been granted late last month, and that both sides had “started in-depth talks on details of the project” in the city’s Pudong New district.

A Shanghai-based Disney executive told AFP on Wednesday: “It’s just a PAR and not the final deal yet.”

When asked how long negotiations could last, the executive said: “It may take several more months.”

China’s official Xinhua news agency, quoting Shanghai municipal officials, said “several big state-owned firms” would form a joint venture with Walt Disney to invest in the project.

Analysts say the Shanghai park would be part of a major push by Disney into China, to build the iconic brand in the world’s most populous nation of 1.3 billion people.

“The Disney park will become a huge advertisement and a landmark project,” Wang Liang, deputy head of the Shanghai Circulation Economics Research Institute, a think-tank linked to the city government, told AFP. “Disney is not just eyeing the output from the park itself. Rather, it aims to cultivate little consumers, cultivate children’s loyalty to the Disney and Mickey Mouse brands.

Profits would then come from the relevant stationery, garments and toys.”

Disney is one of the most active foreign entertainment companies in China, with more than 600 employees in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, according to corporate data.

Its products are sold in 5,000 branded, free-standing locations and retail corners in more than 25 Chinese cities. Last year, the company launched its first English learning centre in Shanghai for children aged two to 10.

The park would be the fourth for Disney outside the United States and the third in Asia, after Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong, where an amusement park opened in 2005.

Earlier reports said Disney had hoped to open the Shanghai park to coincide with next year’s World Expo in the city, but that time frame has now been pushed back until at least 2012 or 2013.

Wang said the amusement park would give China’s financial centre a boost in terms of jobs creation and revenue, but not solely from the millions of tourists visiting the rides and attractions.

“The revenue and new jobs from industries deriving from the Disney park, such as animation, will be much higher than tourists to the park itself.

It will become an engine to drive relevant industries,” Wang said.

NTT, Timor Leste to cooperate in manpower sector Antara

KUPANG - The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) provincial administration and Timor Leste plan to cooperate in the manpower sector, Timor Leste Consul Caetano de Sousa Gutteres said here on Wednesday.

“We have seriously discussed our plan to cooperate in the manpower sector with the NTT provincial administration, and to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the cooperation on December 20 this year,” Gutteres said.

Gutteres made the statement to comment on a visit to Kupang by Timor Leste Junior Manpower Minister Bendito Freitas and Youth and Sports Minister Miguil Mentelu recently. The two ministers from Timor Leste and the country’s Parliamentary Commission-H visited Kupang on October 24, 2009 to explore cooperation in the manpower sector, and for first hand information about manpower training in the city.

was interested in manpower recruitment in East Nusa Tenggara and wanted to cooperate in that field.

But he added that the cooperation mechanism had yet to be discussed in detail, but in principle the the Timor Leste government could at least sent its workers to undergo job training in Kupang. After undergoing training for several months, the workers would return to Dili and later sent to the countries in need of manpower.

“The Timor Leste government will seek jobs in other countries and if the workers who have had job training in Kupang, they will be sent to the countries which are in need as workers,” Gutteres said.

He added that the Timor Leste government would also attend the commemoration of the 51st anniversary of East Nusa Tenggara on December 20, 2009 in Kupang by sending a sports team for friendship competitions.

JAKARTA - The Indonesia subsidiary of French supermarket chain Carrefour on Wednesday challenged an antitrust ruling ordering it to sell its 75-percent stake in local retailer Alfa Retailindo.

The Business Competition Supervisory Commission on Tuesday ordered Carrefour Indonesia to sell its stake in Alfa to outside parties after it ruled that the chain dominated more than 50 percent of the market.

“We’ll attempt to overturn the commission’s ruling after we receive the official notification,” Carrefour Indonesia lawyer Ignatius Andy told a press conference.

“The commission’s findings are

baseless.”

He said Carrefour’s market share in Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s biggest economy with a market of 234 million people, was only 17 percent according to independent studies.

“Alfa’s market share is very small.

There’s no way that we can dominate the market by acquiring it,” he said.

Carrefour bought Alfa in 2008 for 674 billion rupiah (70.9 million dollars). It has 45 stores and Alfa has 30 stores across Indonesia.

The Indonesian watchdog’s ruling came four days after a Taiwanese court rejected a Carrefour appeal against a fine for misleading advertisements. Carrefour is the world’s second biggest retailer after WalMart of the United States.

JAKARTA - The Democrat Party (PD) has asked the Police to ensure the security and safety of suspended Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputies Chandra M Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto.

On Thursday on October 29, 2009, the police detained Bibit Samad and Chandra Hamzah who had been named suspects over the alleged abuse of their authority in the issuance of a travel ban on businessman Anggoro Widjojo, and the issuance and subsequent revocation of a travel ban on businessman Djoko Tjandra.

But late Tuesday night, the police released the two KPK deputy chiefs without dropping the charges which would continue to be processed for eventual hearing in a court of law.

“Following the suspension of Bibit and Chandra’s detention, the Democrat Party urges the police to seriously ensure their security and safety,” chairman of the

party’s faction at the House of Representatives (DPR) Anas Urbaningrum said here on Wednesday.

Anas said it was of great importance to ensure the security and safety of the suspended KPK deputies following their release in order to make their legal process run smoothly.

“Bibit and Chandra’s security is very important in the law enforcement and judicial process in Indonesia,” Anas said.

On September 15, the two KPK deputies were formally declared suspects in an authority abuse case and arrested on Thursday, October 29.

Before the police released Bibit and Chandra from detention, the Constitutional Court had ordered the KPK to play the recordings in a live broadcast hearing where several top officials, including National Police chief detective Comr Gen Susno Duadji, Deputy Attorney General Abdul Hakim Ritonga and even President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono were mentioned.

The governor will analyze the government resources to act on the agreement. The governor also wanted to develop tourism on northern part of Bali because currently, the development of tourism only happened on the south side of Bali. Pastika said “Bali is very beautiful all around and I’m quite sure that the tourists also wanted to visit the northern part of Bali.”

To play one of the games, children should first search for its materials by themselves at backyard or garden. Actually, it is here where the challenge of the games begins. Sometimes, they got injury because they are unable to use a knife properly. It did not matter as intriguing power has superseded it.

Among the parade, there was a space intended for children world where they displayed some bizarre games like coconut shell clog, walking on stilts, and pulling friend by the sheath of areca nut, pulling rope ingroup and two-wheeled toy where its stick carried on shoulder. Meanwhile, the heavier one was gallivanting show by barong effigy.

To play the coconut shell clog, for instance, they should keep their balance well. Standing on the tips of coconut shell is not easy. Moreover, they have to maintain the harmony of steps with the pulling of rope connected to each coconut shell. When the pull and steps can go harmoniously, the player can walk faster. Balance is also entailed in walking on stilts or tajog or egrang. This game is even riskier because the position of pedal is higher from the ground.

However, when a player can operate these stilts properly it is more challenging and pleasant. The higher the pedal the more challenging it is. Walking on stilts looks like a walking long-legged heron. It would be more interesting when passing through a muddy or kneedeep watery road. These games are often put into competition related to traditional sports.

Another game requiring cooperation is pulling the sheath of areca nut. If the bean of areca nut is used by grandfathers or grandmothers for ingredient of chewing betel, the sheath of it is used by their grandchildren to make ‘a pulling vehicle’. Yellow leaf signifies it has been mature. It is time for children to take it. They just need to leave out the ribs of leaf. The main rib is not cut as it will be used to pull. One child serves as passenger while another as driver who pulls the sheath. This role is exchanged so both can have an opportunity to enjoy the ‘comfort’ of this vehicle game.

Children also put an interest in dancing barong gallivanting show.

For them, it has been designed a smaller-sized barong. Therefore, before growing adult they have been introduced to art world of adult people.

By performing gallivanting show like this, they will obtain experience and earn money. However, the emphasis here is not on the money, but on the experience and fun. (BTN/punia)

Curly-podded Pea in Balinese Spices Mostly, living at countryside gives closer access to resources of fresh vegetables and spices, at least the access to vegetables at large like water spinach and fern tips. Another resource is garden at backyard through intercropping with other plants. For instance, curly-podded pea can be grown by letting it climb on the plants nearby. Pick it up before truly mature in order its skin or flesh is not too hard. It is good when served with simple Balinese sauces.

Ingredient: 150gr curly-podded pea Ground spices: 2 cloves garlic, 4 cloves shallot, 1 pc small chili, 1 pc large chili, 1 coriander, 1 slice turmeric, 1 slice kencur and ½ tsp salt, Other: 1 tbsp cooking oil.

Method: • Take out its side-fiber and cleanse thoroughly.

Divide each pod into two or three parts.

• Boil it half-done. Take out and drain.

• Stir-fry the ground spices until smelling fragrant.

Add a cup of water and put the peas into the spices on the frying pan. Let it boil and when it has cooked, take out and it is ready to serve. (BTN/punia)

BUSINESS World Bank boosts China 2009 growth forecast to 8.4 pct Agence France-Presse

BEIJING - The World Bank Wednesday upgraded its 2009 growth forecast for China to 8.4 percent on the back of huge public spending but said stronger domestic demand was needed to ensure a sustainable recovery.

The new prediction by the Washington-based lender in its quarterly update marked a sharp jump from its June forecast for 7.2 percent growth.

Economic growth in the Asian giant could hit 8.7 percent in 2010, it added.

“2009 has shown that even in a very difficult global situation, China can still grow quite robustly,” World Bank senior economist Louis Kuijs, the main author of the report, told a news conference.

“Of course in 2009 emergency measures have been used and you can not continue to use (them) for a long time.”

The upgrade by the World Bank follows similar moves by the International Monetary Fund and Asian Development Bank after the rapid turnaround in the world’s third largest economy caught economists somewhat by surprise.

The strength of the Chinese economy has underpinned a “surprisingly swift” rebound in developing East Asia, the bank said, upgrading its 2009 growth forecast for the region to 6.7 percent from 5.3 percent in April.

Kuijs said it would be “easy” for China to achieve Beijing’s oft-

stated goal of eight percent growth this year.

This pace of growth is seen as vital for job creation and warding off social unrest in the country of 1.3 billion people.

But he warned a successful rebalancing of the economy was needed to ensure a sustainable recovery in the medium term.

“Now the government has basically succeeded in dampening the impact of the global crisis, it is a good time to concentrate ... on rebalancing the economy and getting more growth out of the domestic economy on a sustainable basis,” he said.

“This calls for more emphasis on consumption and services and less emphasis on investment and industry.”

China grew by 8.9 percent in the third quarter — the fastest pace in a year — after expanding by 7.9 percent in the second quarter and 6.1 percent in the first three months, the slowest pace in more than a decade.

The recovery has been driven by a four-trillion-yuan (586-billiondollar) stimulus package unveiled a year ago and a record 8.67 trillion yuan in bank lending in the first nine months of 2009.

China was expected to grow in 2010 even as public spending slowed, the bank said, as demand for Chinese-made goods overseas picked up.

“In 2010 the composition of growth is likely to change ... Exports will probably stop being a drag on growth from end-2009 onwards and real estate investment looks set to be stronger,” the bank said in the report.

“However, government-influenced investment, the key driver of growth this year, is bound to decelerate (and) market-based investment is likely to continue to feel negative pressure from the significant spare capacity in many manufacturing sectors.”

“In all, we expect GDP growth to rise somewhat in 2010, with risks evenly balanced.”

The bank said it saw no need yet for macroeconomic policies to be tightened while risks and uncertainties in the global economy remained high.

“Underlying inflation is not a concern for now. A somewhat supportive policy stance is appropriate, and it is particularly important to have flexibility to add or subtract support if needed,” the bank said.

WASHINGTON - A majority of Americans still feel their country is faring badly one year after President Barack Obama’s White House win, but their ranks have been dwindling steadily since the financial crisis broke last year, a CNN poll has found.

Sixty-three percent of 1,018 adults surveyed in the poll released late Tuesday said things in the United States were going pretty badly to very badly, against 37 percent who thought they were going fairly well to very well.

Both opinions had been changing gradually since mid-2008, when the financial crisis began.

In a November 6-9 poll last year, the number of Americans who thought their country was faring very badly peaked at 83 percent,

while those who thought things were going well bottomed out at 16 percent. That survey was conducted just days after Obama won the presidential elections on November 4, 2008.

The latest poll coincided with a Commerce Department announcement last week that the US economy had rebounded from recession in the third quarter, posting its strongest economic growth in two years.

Obama claimed the upswing was a result of the 787-billion-dollar stimulus package passed by Congress shortly after he took office in January.

Conducted October 30-November 1, the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll had a three percent margin of error. Of the adults surveyed, 952 were registered voters.

LONDON - The Bank of England will on Thursday decide whether to inject billions of extra pounds into the British economy to help get it out of its longest recession on record.

While analysts widely expect the BoE to leave its key interest rate at the record-low level of 0.50 percent, question marks hang over whether the central bank will continue with a radical policy of pumping new cash into the economy.

In a major week for international monetary policy, Australia’s central bank on Tuesday raised interest rates for a second month running as the US Federal Reserve met with a decision due on Wednesday.

The European Central Bank, like the BoE, meets Thursday.

The BoE has sought to combat recession with record-low interest rates and quantitative easing (QE) — its policy of pumping new cash into the economy to help kick-start lending to businesses and individuals.

Under QE, the BoE has so far agreed to create 175 billion pounds

(196 billion euros, 287 billion dollars) in new cash by purchasing bonds from commercial institutions.

“With the previous extension to its QE programme now complete and the economy still stuck firmly in recession, we expect it to announce another 50 billion pounds of asset purchases over the next three months,” said analysts at Capital Economics.

“And given the (Monetary Policy) Committee’s record of boldness when it comes to QE, we would not rule out an even bigger amount,” they said in a note to clients.

However, Investec Securities economist Philip Shaw said “there remains uncertainty over” the upcoming QE policy decision owing in part to the weakness of sterling, which has suffered in recent months from the BoE’s policy.

“It is more likely that the balance of economic evidence and the weaker exchange rate will result in the MPC voting to freeze the QE target at 175 billion pounds,” Shaw said.

The BoE’s main task is to try and use monetary policy to keep annual British inflation close to a govern-

ment-set target of 2.0 percent.

Twelve-month inflation slid to 1.1 percent in September, the lowest level for five years as energy prices steadied, recent official data showed.

Britain is meanwhile in its longest recession since records began in 1955, confounding expectations for a return to growth in the third quarter.

Gross domestic product (GDP) unexpectedly slumped 0.4 percent between July and September compared with a fall of 0.6 percent in the second quarter, the Office for National Statistics announced in late October.

Economists had widely expected Britain to exit recession in the third quarter with a return to growth of 0.2 percent after five quarters of shrinking GDP. Britain has thus failed to join France, Germany, Japan and the United States in exiting recession — defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth.

The current recession has so far seen the British economy contract 5.9 percent, very close to the downturn of the early 1980s when the total shrinkage reached 6.0 percent.

Carrey gets glimpse of future in ‘Christmas Carol’ remake IT is 166 years since the publication of “A Christmas Carol”, Charles Dickens’ heartwarming seasonal story of redemption wrapped up in a biting indictment of 19th century capitalism. Yet in the era of global financial crisis and multi-billion-dollar fraud, Jim Carrey believes Dickens’ tale about how the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge learns to change his ways remains as relevant today as ever.

“I think it’s a very pressing story nowadays, too,” says Carrey, the star of Disney’s re-imagining of the classic, released in North America on November 6. “I think stories get told at times when they’re supposed to be told. “Scrooge is the first corporate scumbag. “Everybody loves a good transformational story. You know, somebody who sees the light, who finally finds out what’s important in life. And, this is one of the greatest ones ever written.” Just like the character of Scrooge, Carrey was

But while Scrooge’s insight came via the spooky Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, Carrey’s own premonition was entirely due to his appearance after the 3D movie’s special effects wizards went to work.

Instead of the familiar 47-yearold face known to millions in hits such as “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” and “Bruce Almighty,” Carrey says he was left staring at the spitting image of his father. “When I saw the movie, one of the first things I said when I saw the first close up of Scrooge is, ‘my family is going to have a heart attack, because that is my father,’” he said.

“It’s unbelievable. It’s really a look into the future for me. Not the long chin and the long nose, but the look is what I’m going to look like when I’m old,” Carrey added.

Disney’s new take on the classic is the latest in a long line of adaptations of the beloved 1843 novella, with the first screen version coming more than a century ago in the 1901 British short “Scrooge”.

Widow Elsie Poncher is reportedly trying to sell her husband Richard’s resting place above Monroe in order to help pay off her mortgage. Her husband bought the plot from Monroe’s former spouse and baseball icon Joe DiMaggio and has been entombed there for 23 years.

Poncher, who plans to move her husband to a crypt designated for her, sought to auction the plot at the Westwood Village Memorial Park on

eBay after a 4.6 million dollar offer in August collapsed. Poncher told the Los Angeles Times that her husband had requested to be placed above Monroe — face down — as he lay dying.

“He said ‘If I croak and you

don’t put me upside down over Marilyn, I’ll haunt you the rest of my life,’” the Times quoted her as saying. Playboy founder Hugh Hefner purchased the crypt adjacent to Monroe’s in 1992 for 75,000 dollars.

GENEVA – A rare Panamanian tree frog, a rodent from Madagascar and two lizards found only in the Philippines are among over 17,000 species threatened with extinction, a leading environmental group said Tuesday. The Rabb’s fringe-limbed tree frog, only discovered four years ago, is one of 1,895 amphibian species that could soon disappear from the wild because of deforestation and infection, the International Union for Conservation of Nature said.

The Switzerland-based group surveyed 47,677 animals and plants for this year’s “Red List” of endangered species, determining that 17,291 of them are at risk of extinction. More than one in five of all known mammals, over a quarter of reptiles and 70 percent of plants are under threat, according to the survey, which featured over 2,800 new species compared with 2008. “These results are just the tip of the iceberg,” said Craig Hilton-Taylor, who manages the list.

He said many more species that have yet to be assessed could also be under serious threat.

The only mammal added to the list this year was the Eastern Voalavo, a rodent that lives in the mountainous forests of Madagascar.

IUCN classified it as “endangered” — two steps from extinction in the wild — because its habitat is being destroyed by slash-and-burn farming. The Red List already includes species such as the tiger, of which only 3,200 are thought to exist in the wild and whose habitat in Asia is steadily shrinking due to encroachment by humans. Governments and international conservation bodies use the list as guidance when deciding which species to place under legal protection.

The group added almost 300 reptiles this year, including the Panay monitor lizard and the sail-fin water lizard, both of which are hunted for food and threatened by logging in their native Philippines. IUCN also surveyed 3,120 freshwater fishes, up 510 species from last year, and found 1,147 of them threatened with extinction. They include the brown mudfish in New Zealand, whose wetland habitats have been virtually destroyed through drainage schemes, irrigation and land development.

Some species have recovered thanks to conservation efforts, the group said. The Australian grayling, a freshwater fish, graduated from “vulnerable” to “near threatened” thanks to fish ladders at dams and other protection measures. But for many other species, conservation efforts are likely to come too late.

The Kihansi spray toad of southern Tanzania is now thought to be extinct in the wild. A dam upstream of Kihansi Falls has dried up the gorge where it lived, and an aggressive fungal disease known as chytridiomycosis appears to have pushed the toad population over the edge, the group said.

The same fate could soon befall the unusually large Rabb’s fringe-

limbed tree frog, which glides through the forest using its big webbed feet to steer safely to the ground. It is the only known frog species where the tadpoles feed off skin shed by the male while he guards the young. The chytrid fungus that causes chytridiomycosis reached central Panama in 2006, a year after scientists first discovered the tree frog. Since then the fungus — believed to be spread by international trade and global warming — has virtually wiped out the wild frog population.

“Only a single male has been heard calling since,” IUCN said. Zoo Atlanta scientist Joseph Mendelson, part of the group that identified the frog as a distinct species, said it is likely that dozens or even hundreds of other amphibians have become or are going to be extinct before they are even discovered. “This one we caught right before it went off the planet, but other species surely we didn’t catch in time,” Mendelson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “When you name a new species you’re attached to it, and when that species disappears so quickly it’s impossible not to have feelings associated with that,” he said.

“I’m pretty sad to be honest, really sad.”

SANTIAGO - Astronomers in Chile and Japan have for the first time seen part of the “cosmic web” of galaxies that permeates the known universe in a gigantic assembly some seven billion lightyears from Earth. Viewed through the world’s most powerful telescopes, the discovery “is the first observation of such a prominent galaxy structure in the distant universe, providing further insight into the cosmic web and how it formed,” the European Southern Observatory (ESO) said Tuesday in a statement.

The assembly of galaxies form filaments “millions of light years long and constitute the skeleton of the universe,” it said. “Galaxies gather around them, and immense galaxy clusters form at their intersections, lurking like giant spiders waiting for more matter to digest,” it added.

The filaments are located about

6.7 billion light-years away and extend over at least 60 million lightyears, the scientists said, adding the structure very likely stretches beyond the area they probed, warranting further observations. “This is the first time that we have observed such a rich and prominent structure in the distant universe,” said ESO’s Masayuki Tanaka, who led the study.

“We can now move from demography to sociology and study how the properties of galaxies depend on their environment, at a time when the Universe was only two thirds of its present age,” Tanaka added. Scientists have long theorized that galaxy clusters are not evenly distributed throughout the universe. “The most widely accepted cosmological theories predict that matter also clumps on a larger scale in the so-called cosmic web’, in which galaxies, embedded in filaments stretching between voids, create a gigantic wispy structure,” Tanaka said.

Snow cap disappearing from Mount Kilimanjaro Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – The snows of Kilimanjaro may soon be gone.

The African mountain’s white peak — made famous by writer Ernest Hemingway — is rapidly melting, researchers report. Some 85 percent of the ice that made up the mountaintop glaciers in 1912 was gone by 2007, researchers led by paleoclimatologist Lonnie Thompson of Ohio State University report in Tuesday’s edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

And more than a quarter of the ice present in 2000 was gone by 2007. If current conditions continue “the ice fields atop Kilimanjaro will not endure,” the researchers said. The Kilimanjaro glaciers are both shrinking, as the ice at their edges melts, and thinning, the researchers found. Simi-

lar changes are being reported at Mount Kenya and the Rwenzori Mountains in Africa and at glaciers in South America and the Himalayas.

“The fact that so many glaciers throughout the tropics and subtropics are showing similar responses suggests an underlying common cause,” Thompson said in a statement. “The increase of Earth’s near surface temperatures, coupled with even greater increases in the midto upper-tropical troposphere, as documented in recent decades, would at least partially explain” the observations. Changes in cloudiness and snowfall may also be involved, though they appear less important, according to the study.

On Kilimanjaro, the researchers said, the northern ice field thinned by 6.2 feet (1.9 meters) and the southern ice field by 16.7 feet (5.1 meters) between 2000 and 2007.

Djokovic breezes through in Basel Agence France - Presse

BASEL, Switzerland - Novak Djokovic made a winning debut on Tuesday at the Swiss Indoors as the Serbian claimed a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Andreas Beck in the tennis stronghold of Roger Federer. Djokovic took just under 90 minutes to move into the second round at the St Jakobshalle, where top seed Federer got his start in the game a decade and a half ago as a ball boy at the indoor event.

Djokovic, who leads the ATP with 67 wins, said he feels the presence of Federer around the grounds.

“Of course in his hometown and home tournament, all of the attention will be on him,” said the Serbian sporting hero. “But I’ve found it fine here. “I hope to repay the kindness by going on the court and getting as far as possible this week.” The player whose only experience in Basel was a qualifying loss in 2004, couldn’t fault his opening main draw effort.

“For a first match (since Shanghai last month) I played well.

My strokes were solid but I could have closed it out better in the second set.” Third-ranked Djokovic delivered ten aces to set up a second-round match with Czech Jan Hernych, who extended the misery of Australian qualifier Peter Luczak, who sank deeper into a rut with a

Swiss hopes fared well, with Marco Chiudinelli rallying from a final-set deficit to overhaul German eighth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 7-5. The Swiss player, ranked 73 in the world, has seen a rise in his fortunes in recent months, reaching the third round of the US Open and also reaching the quarter-finals in Bangkok.

His Basel win in two-and-a-quarter hours was welcome as it ended a run of two successive first round exits in Shanghai and Vienna. “It’s great to have some success at home in Basel,” said Chiudinelli, “It was a tough match.

“But I’m very fit right now and it hasn’t been that way for me during the last two years here. He (Kohlschreiber) really put me to the wall but I believed in myself and came through with the win.

To win at home is perfect, I’m elated.”

The Swiss pounded down 11 aces to 15 for his German opponent, with Chiudinelli saving ten of the dozen break points he faced. The 28-year-old Chiudinelli, who is the third ranked Swiss singles player behind Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka, is making his fifth appearance in Basel, and has now earned his second victory win for a 24 record after winning his first match here in five years. He has qualified seven times in 2009 on the ATP, including four in a row this fall (US Open, Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai).

Nash powers Suns past Heat Agence France - Presse

MIAMI, Florida - Steve Nash scored 25 of his 30 points in the second half as the Phoenix Suns beat the Miami Heat 104-96 to extend their early season win streak to four games.

Canada’s Nash nailed four three-pointers and had eight assists for Phoenix in the battle of two undefeated teams at the American Airlines Arena. “I didn’t really play great in the first half,” Nash said. “I wanted to be aggressive and give my teammates a chance to get back in the game. I was just trying to put more pressure on the defence.”

Amare Stoudemire had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Grant Hill posted a doubledouble with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the

Suns, who outscored Miami 29-15 in the fourth quarter. Dwyane Wade’s led the Heat (3-1) with 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Quentin Richardson also figured prominently with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Jermaine O’Neal had 14 points and Michael Beasley finished with 12. Udonis Haslem grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for the Heat.

Nash converted a three-point play after the teams traded points for a 102-93 Suns lead with two minutes remaining. Miami failed to capitalize on their final three shots.

“It just came down to the Suns sustaining it,” Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said. “They got to their game more consistently and did better getting to their game than we did getting to our game in the second half.”

VALENCIA - Britain’s world number four Andy Murray had an easy return to action here on Tuesday as he eased into the second round of the Valencia Open with a 63, 6-1 victory over qualifier Daniel GimenoTraver of Spain.

The 22-year-old Briton - who has been out of action for the past six weeks - is preparing for the season ending ATP World Tour Finals in London in a campaign which has seen him reach a best ever world ranking of second before slipping back two places.

The only concern for Murray - who will

also play the Paris Masters next week - is a nagging wrist injury. Murray cruised into a 4-0 lead in the first set of his match against the Spaniard before losing concentration and the next three games - but he never looked back after that taking eight of the next nine matches to close out an easy win.

He will play Argentinian Leonardo Mayer in the second round. There were no upsets on the second day of action with two of the players still chasing down the two available remaining spots for the World Tour Finals, French duo Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils winning their respective matches in straight sets.

We weren’t good enough, admits Bayern boss Agence France - Presse

MUNICH - Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal admitted his side were simply not good enough after they were effectively knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday after suffering a 2-0 defeat at home to Bordeaux.

This was Bayern’s first home European defeat in five years as Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh took advantage of a mistake in the home side’s defence to score a late goal after midfielder Yoann Gourcuff netted a first-half header. “In such an important game, it is always important to score a goal, which we didn’t do,” said van Gaal.

“We had no luck and we were not awarded a clear penalty after Bordeaux had a hand-ball. These are the small things which can turn a game. We just weren’t good enough. That wasn’t our best game, but we are not out yet and we still have another small chance.”

But with two games left - at Juventus and home to Maccabi Haifa - in the group stages, Bayern now need a miracle to qualify as the defeat leaves them third in the

table six points behind leaders Bordeaux and four behind Juventus.

Bayern captain Mark van Bommel admitted he was at fault when Gourcuff was left unmarked to score a simple header just before half-time.

“I should have been there for the first goal - it was my fault - then we weren’t given a clear penalty and (striker) Luca Toni missed two chances to score,” admitted van Bommel. We tried everything in the second-half, but the ball wouldn’t go in. We didn’t play badly, we were better than them after the break, but it was hard out there.”

And Bordeaux boss Laurent Blanc praised his side for getting a rare win in Germany. “We came here determined to play well, but knowing the difficulty which awaited us,” said the 43-year-old.

“We knew Bayern are not that confident at the moment. We didn’t create that many chances, but we defended well and didn’t give them many opportunities. It was good for us psychologically to get the first goal and all in all we are very satisfied. “It was a good achievement to come here and get a win in Munich which puts us in the next round.”

PARIS - English giants Chelsea and Manchester United made hard work of it but ended up coming from behind to both qualify for the Champions League knockout stages on Tuesday.

French champions Bordeaux joined them as they earned an impressive 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in Munich, while Porto can also look forward to Champions League football in the spring after winning 1-0 at APOEL Nicosia.

However, things look stark for Bayern Munich and their Champions League-winning coach Louis van Gaal as his side trail second-placed Juventus by four points in Group A with two matches remaining. Chelsea came from 1-0 down to draw 2-2 with Atletico Madrid - Didier Drogba scoring both goals on his return from a three-match Champions League suspension.

“It was a good game but frustrating because we didn’t win it,” said Drogba. “I have played many Champions League games with Chelsea in

the past and to be honest I am just happy to be back on the pitch. We have qualified which is great although it would have been nice to do it with a win.”

United had to come from even further behind as they trailed 3-1 late into the match against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford before two goals levelled matters and pushed them through. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was relieved to have progressed but was left less than happy by the referee’s performance, especially over a penalty that was not

awarded for a trip on Darren Fletcher - the Scottish midfielder being booked instead. “I can’t believe the decision. Its one of the worst I have seen in my lifetime,” fumed the irascible Scot.

Marseille had wrapped things up shortly after half-time as captain Mamadou Niang was on hand to round off a nicely worked move by the French side to make it 3-1 against FC Zurich and then romped away to leave themselves in with a real chance of making the knockout stages.

MILAN - Real Madrid’s Brazil star Kaka said it was an emotional night for him on his first return to the club he graced for six years and with which he won the Champions League and the World Player of the Year title.

Kaka was not at his best in the Group C match that finished 1-1 but he did make a decisive contribution,

firing in the shot in the 29th minute that Dida couldn’t hold, allowing Karim Benzema to give the Spaniards the lead.

Several banners around the San Siro expressed the Milan faithful’s affection for their former player while he was afforded standing ovations before and after the game. “It was an emotional night, I tried to control my emotions and play the match,” he said.

“(The reception) was great, as I expected it to be. I was offered a warm welcome. I had some great moments here and I want to thank the fans.” And Kaka also had kind words for his former team-mates.

“Milan’s group is very strong, they have to play many games and aren’t managing to develop any consistency.

“But in the Champions League in the big games, they always turn up.”

Rossi out to enjoy season finale

Valentino Rossi says he is out to enjoy his final race of the season at Valencia after having clinched the title in the previous event. The Yamaha rider wrapped up his seventh championship in the top category, and the ninth in total, after finishing in second place at the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Stoner bullish on victory chances CASEY Stoner is confident that he can end the MotoGP season in dominant fashion at this weekend’s Valencia Grand Prix. The Ducati rider is the on-form man at the moment, having won in Australia and Malaysia, and also won at Valencia last year. The 2007 world champion believes that the circuit will suit the Desmosedici GP09 well and give him a great chance of adding another victory to his growing collection.

“Valencia is a circuit I’ve always liked - it is tight and slow but surprisingly flowing, and my Ducati has always run really well there,” said the Australian. “And I’ve been on the pace for the past couple of seasons - in testing and in the races – so obviously we’re hoping that trend continues, even though we will have to make a few small adjustments to the bike. We’re finally at the end of the season and already looking forward to the next one, so if we can win this race then great, if not we’ll try and finish the year with a podium and then start working towards next year.”

His team-mate Nicky Hayden has happy memories of Valencia, as it was the scene of his emotional world title win in 2006. Hayden lies a disappointing 13th in the championship, but knows that a podium finish – something that he has achieved only once since joining Ducati – could enable him to jump as high as ninth overall.

“I love Valencia for obvious reasons, but I also like the circuit itself,” said the American, who first rode a Ducati in a test at the circuit just under a year ago. “If I can manage a good result there’s a chance we can finish the season in the top 10. I won’t be easy but we’ll see what we can do.”

Although Rossi has not enjoyed many great races at Valencia, the Italian reckons his team is in strong form and is looking to finish the season on a high. “I am very happy to be going to the final race with the championship won and the pressure off, now we can just enjoy ourselves,” said Rossi. “It’s been a fantastic year and now we just have one more weekend before we start work for 2010.”

“Valencia hasn’t been a great track for me in the past and I’ve had some bad times there, but at the moment we’re in great shape and our bike is working well everywhere we go, so I hope it will be the same at Valencia. It’s a great place to finish and the atmosphere is amazing, so we will just do our best and hope for another good race to end off a great season. On Monday we will start working on the new M1 and I’m very excited to try it!”

Team-mate Jorge Lorenzo is aiming to secure the runner-up spot after a series of difficult races. The Spaniard just need a point to finish in second behind Rossi. “Valencia is an amazing place to finish the championship, at home, with your fans,” said Lorenzo. “I’ve never got a victory here and I know that it’s not one of the best tracks for Yamaha, but I am confident that I can try to change that and finish the championship in the best possible way. The last two races haven’t been great for me and I really want to get over that. Furthermore, I need one point to become ‘vice-champion’ and I would really like to do that with a podium or a win. That’s my aim in Valencia.”

“My best race here was in 2005, when I finished in second place but I think my best memory was in 2006 when I won the championship there.

2009 has been an amazing year for me and for Yamaha and I am looking forward to celebrating with my fans at a home race.”
