Rezai’s win should see her break into the WTA top 30 for the first time. The victory in 62 minutes — it ended on a Bartoli double-fault — was the first all-French singles final on the Tour since Amelie Mauresmo beat Mary Pierce at the Paris Indoors in 2006.

The title was the second of her career for the 44th-ranked Rezai, following her win at Strasbourg in May. “It’s a great feeling to be here in the final, I’m very sorry for Marion that this happened,” said the winner of a career-best 200,000 dollars. “I’d prefer to win in a different way, but it’s tennis, a lot of different things happen. I was really motivated to win here.”

Rezai now stands 2-2 in career finals after finishing runner-up in 2007 at Istanbul against Elena Dementieva and in 2008 at Auckland against Lindsay Davenport. Bartoli dropped to 5-6 lifetime in singles finals after her disappointment on the tropical Indonesian resort island. “I’m crying right now, but I’m so happy to be here,” said Bartoli, runner-up at Bali three years ago when it was part of the regular WTA Tour.

Rabies case appearing in a number of regencies/city across Bali in fact did not reach the circle of Department of Health of the RI. It was proven by the fact that Minister of Health, Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih has not known about the spread of rabies case in Bali.

Minister that was just installed in last October 2009 admitted to have not known if rabies case emerged in Bali. Even, she stayed to judge Bali was free from rabies.

On the other hand, Minister of Health also confessed for the 100day program of SBY’s government, her department had 45 programs that would be undertaken within the second term of government. For health department, there were four main programs, namely improving health financing, improving the status of people’s health, preventing contagious diseases and improving human resources of health department. Smuggling of 5,000 Ecstasies to be Foiled

Quarrel of husband-wife, Ni Kadek Sukerti (33) and I Made Beneh (39), from Bayung Cerik, Kintamani, last Thursday (Nov 5), ended tragically. Made Beneh stabbed the stomach of his wife by a piece of cockfight blade (taji) so that she was bespattered with fresh blood. She was promptly sent to Sanglah Hospital to get immediate help. After the incident, perpetrator vanished and was searched by police. He was just encountered on Friday (Nov 6) noon, at dead condition by suspending himself on hibiscus tree, not far from his house.

Unit Chief of Detective of Bangli Resort Police, IN Kariyasa, accompanied by Chief of Kintamani Sector Police, IM Oka and Detective Sudarma Putra, with permission of Chief of Bangli Resort Police when asked about his confirmation, justified that his party was handling the bloody domestic violence case.

Beneh who was angry attempted to attack Kartika. Unavoidably, a struggle happened among them to grab the blade on Beneh’s hand. “After the blade of Beneh was grabbed, Beneh escaped in the dead of the night,” said Kartika. Joint team of Directorate of Narcotics of Bali Police and National Narcotic Agency (BNN) could foil a smuggling of thousands of ecstasies on last September 28, 2009 at 4 p.m. Local Time.

However, the joint team was unable to trace the sender and receiver of such illegal drugs because address of the sender was known to be fictive. Meanwhile, the destination address was mentioned but the name of addressee registered on the cardboard box was unavailable. Hence, the joint team only secured the evidence of 5,000 pills of ecstasy.

Spokesperson of Bali Police, I Gde Sugianyar, last Friday (Nov 6) explained that such illegal drugs were secured after his party made cooperation with BNN. The party of BNN gave information that there was a suspected freight sent from Jakarta to Bali.

The freight was wrapped in food pack and suspected as illegal drugs. Having checked by X-ray machine, in fact, it contained 5,000 pills of ecstasy, explained Sugianyar accompanied by Division Head of Analysis, Directorate of Narcotics of Bali Police, Ketut Asmiriwati.

This former Chief of Balikpapan Resort Police explained that BNN directly contacted Directorate of Narcotics, Bali Police ordering to trace the owner of package containing such satanic pills. On that account, the pills

were let to fly to Bali.

Indeed, the package has been suspected when it was in Cengkareng Airport, Jakarta. “But, it was let to be sent to Bali in the purpose to know the receiver of such freight,” he revealed on the press conference at Headquarter of Bali Police, last Friday.

Address of the sender registered was Rahman R, Jalan Pulau Asem III No. 56 East Jakarta. On the brown cardboard box was written the telephone number of the sender, namely 021-4788 2177. Meanwhile, the packaged was sent to Agung Antara with address on Jalan Nuri No. 24, Dauh Peken Village, Tabanan with telephone number 0856 215 5339.

When the package arrived at the office of express courier service (Tiki) in Denpasar, the team of Directorate of

Narcotics of Bali Police took it right away. Furthermore, the team of Kokot Indarto performed a development based on the finding of such evidence.

Immediately, the team moved at that time. The tracing was carried out to the address mentioned. Indeed, the address really existed but that name was unavailable. Meanwhile, the address in Jakarta was fictive, said the officer with three jasmines on shoulder.

Furthermore, Sugianyar said that since the addressee and addresser were fictive, the packaged was then stored at Bali Police. “We have made a tracing for more than a month. Unfortunately, the sender and receiver were untraceable. On that account, we keep the evidence in the form of grey 5,000 pills of ecstasy. The case is being developed,” he added. (kmb21)

Four youths, Ketut Subawa (18), Made Antara (17), Putu Gede Sutama (18) and Made Sugiarta (17) from Tubuh Hamlet, Batubulan, Sukawati, Gianyar, were washed away by waves last Thursday (Nov 5) when taking a bath at the area of Manyar Beach, Ketewel, Sukawati, Gianyar. Out of the four youths washed away, Ketut Subawa vanished behind the fierce of waves at that afternoon.

Information gathered by Bali Post, the four youths arrived at Manyar Beach at around 4 p.m.

Local Time. The youth coming from the same hamlet, took a bath at the beach few minutes later. Previously, they were playing on the sand. Residents who happened to be at location did not see any strange movement on those youths.

Having played on the sand, they took a bath together at the beach.

Unexpectedly, their cheerfulness on bathing on the beach ended in a disaster. A moderately large

wave attacked them at that afternoon and one of them vanished.

Seeing that their friend Subawa disappeared from the water, the three friends turned panic and asked for help to surrounding residents. Big waves made them adrift and buffeted at sea. Fortunately, fishers at the beach soon knew this.

Those fishers attempted to rescue them. As a result, three of them could be rescued and brought to the beach. The case was then promptly reported to police.

Chief of Sukawati Sector Police, VB Musak, when asked about his confirmation, justified the incident. It was known first by one of the fishers who rescued them. However, one of them could not be encountered yet. “We have asked assistance to SAR team of Bali and Waters Police of Bali Police to search for him. Up to last Thursday afternoon, the search was delayed because situation at location was dark. The search would be resumed on Friday (Nov 6). (kmb16)

Residents of Lemukih Customary Village, Sawan subdistrict, seemingly were not bored to leave their work to perform demonstration to a number of institutions in Singaraja. On last Friday (Nov 6), hundreds of Lemukih residents came again to Headquarter (HQ) of Buleleng Resort Police to accompany their friends examined by investigator related to the clash ensued in last October.

Those residents arrived about 9 a.m. Local Time. As soon as arrived at HQ of Buleleng Resort Police, residents in middle customary attires riding motorbike and pick-up vehicle were impeded right away by police.

Unit of Mass Control, Detective and Traffic Services impeded them. By chance, on last Friday morning, that joint team of Buleleng Resort Police indeed organized vehicle’s document inquest in front of the HQ. Even, a number of Lemukih residents riding motorbike were charged with traffic violation since they could not present a complete document of their motorbike.

Other than impeded in the vehicle’s document inquest,

Lemukih residents were also forbidden to enter the courtyard of Resort Police HQ, except for residents undergoing the probe and his lawyer.

Since having no other choice, Lemukih residents should feel satisfied by sitting down only at pavement in front of Jagatnatha Temple. Meanwhile, residents who were bored to sit down looked walked back and forth on pavement along the Jalan Pramuka.

Spokesperson of Buleleng Resort Police, Made Sudirsa, said that investigator should probe five witnesses from Lemukih Customary Village on last Friday. However, three out of five witnesses summoned were not willing to come because their name on

the summon letter was mistyped.

Therefore, only two residents were interrogated namely Kadek Sudisma and Nyarikan Sunu. “Meanwhile, three residents whose name was mistyped would remain to be summoned with a new letter,” said Sudirsa.

Sudirsa added that police has obtained five names of suspect becoming perpetrators in the attack of clash ensued at Lemukih Village, last Tuesday (Oct 27) night. “The suspects will be determined officially after investigator got additional evidences on probing the five witnesses. The names of suspect have been on our hand, we just need to complete the evidences,” he said. (kmb15)

Three Persons of Police Captured When Gambling To be Released as No Cash Evidence Found Singaraja (Bali Post)—

Three persons of police officer of Buleleng Resort Police from different units were captured red handedly when playing ceki or Chinese card at a place on Jalan Pulau Bali, Kampung Baru, Singaraja, last Wednesday (Nov 4) night. Having been probed, Thursday (Nov 5) at early morning, the three persons were released with the reason that no evidence in the form of cash was found.

Information collected on last Thursday, mentioned that Deputy Chief of Buleleng Resort Police, Mulyadi, captured the three persons of police in person together with some members of Complaint and Discipline Enforcement Service (P3D) of Buleleng Resort Police. They respectively worked at Traffic Services and Intelligence Unit of Buleleng Resort Police, as well as Detective Unit.

Such capture originated in the report of local resident mentioning that three persons of police were playing ceki at a location on Jalan Pulau Bali. Having been captured, the three person of police officer were once probed from Wednesday up to Thursday at early morning. However, the three were then released because the police probing them did not encounter evidence in the form of cash of the game.

Deputy Chief of Buleleng Resort Police, Mulyadi, when asked about his confirmation, justified that his party has captured three persons of police officer who were playing ceki. At 11:30 p.m.

Local Time, Deputy Chief received a report from local resident mentioning that its members were playing ceki at a location on Jalan Pulau Bali, Singaraja. “With the member of duty officer, I came to location and encountered three of our members there,” he said.

According to Deputy Chief Mulyadi, evidence found at location of games was only ceki cards, and no cash was found. Based on the result of probe, three persons of police officer were at location because they were on duty. “Yes, situation of security and orderliness of community in Buleleng made them always alert,” ended Mulyadi.

Regarding to the existence of Traffic Services Unit at location, was he in charge to maintain the security, too?

Surprising fact emerged in the murder session‘s of AA Bagus Narendra Prabangsa alleged to be committed by Nyoman Susrama in Denpasar Court, last Thursday (Nov 5). Witness Mertadana presented on the session loudly stated that he was taught to tell lies by one of the lawyers of defendant.

Witness having profession as the head of worker at the house of defendant said that the appeal to tell lies ensued when he met the six lawyers at the residential house of Bangli Regent on last February 15, 2009. At that time, the witness was asked to admit that he worked as usual on February 11, whereas in fact he did not. Judge Djumain chairing the session allowed the witness to meet the lawyers accompanying the defendant. This graduate of primary school then pointed to AA Surya Dharma where previously he mentioned him as the lawyer in glasses.

Testimony of witness being very honest was welcome by great applause from session visitors. In the meantime, the lawyer Surya Dharma cornered in such a way even gave applause by uplifting both hands. When given opportunity to ask question, Surya Dharma then took the witness to say frankly.

By mentioning a number of sages, the witness was demanded to tell the truth without force from any party.

As consequence, the witness once felt confused. Moreover, the lawyer of defendant showed a piece of statement letter signed by witness.

Previously, witness stated to have uneasy feeling when first worked on February 15 after ordered to take dayoff. However, witness could not explain further, why he felt so. When leaving home, his feeling was good. “But, when I arrived at working place, right in the rear of the defendant’s house, suddenly such uneasy feeling emerged,” explained the witness.

Witness also explained to have seen something bizarre when he first worked. Right in front of bathroom, the witness admitted to see the ruins of burnt wood. However, the witness had no suspicion why such thing happened at location.

On asked about the truth that witness was order to take day-off, he justified it. Afterward, the witness explained the details that on February 10, he was asked to work for a half day (at afternoon). Meanwhile, on the following day, the defendant instructed him not to work temporarily. The witness did not know about the reason behind such order. Previously, there was indeed an order not to work if materials were not available. In the meantime, on February 10, all materials have been complete.

On that occasion, prosecutor Komang Sucitrawan also presented the witness Rajin. Different from Mertadana who gave explanation honestly, this witness slightly stuttered in giving the explanation. In providing testimony, the witness who often asked by defendant to repair the house building was once warned by the judge. (015)

Families hold Rio memorial for doomed Air France flight Agence France-Presse

RIO DE JANEIRO - Families of the 228 people who died when an Air France jet airliner crashed off Brazil’s northeast coast in June held a private memorial service Saturday at an ocean overlook in Rio de Janeiro.

European relatives of those who perished on flight AF 447 as it was flying from Rio to Paris arrived Friday on a chartered Air France plane.

They met Brazilian kin to pay respects at a new memorial erected in Rio’s upmarket beach-side suburb of Leblon.

A junior French minister, Alain Joyandet, in charge of overseas cooperation, attended the event along with Air France chief JeanCyril Spinetta, according to Joyandet’s office.

The event, limited to around 500 people, was closed to reporters at the request of relatives, the organizers said. Police blocked the streets leading to the site.

“It was a ceremony filled with dignity... to allow the families to express their mourning,” Joyandet said at the end of the outdoor event, which lasted around two

hours.

At the ceremony a glass memorial engraved with 228 swallows — symbolizing the number of victims — soaring over the ocean was unveiled.

The actual ceremony was simple: there was a reading of sacred texts, tributes read by five families, and a performer sang a song written by the wife of one of the victims.

“It was a beautiful seaside tribute,” said Christopher Lara, a relative of a French victim. “This will become a place of contemplation.”

Maarten van Sluys, spokesman for the Brazilian victims, told AFP after the ceremony that several people at the event wore black armbands “to silently protest the lack of transparency of the French authorities in the investigation.”

AF 447 plunged into the Atlantic 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) off Brazil on June 1 in still unclear circumstances.

The Airbus A330 was carrying 216 passengers and a crew of 12 on board. They came from 32 countries and included 72 French, 58 Brazilians and 26 Germans.

It was the worst disaster in Air France’s 75-year history.

British PM’s call for transactions tax gets cold shoulder

ST ANDREWS - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown surprised G20 finance ministers by urging them to consider a tax on global financial transactions, but the idea got a lukewarm response. Brown said Saturday such a levy, often called the Tobin Tax after the US economist who devised it, would force financial institutions to be more responsible and was one of a range of measures that could help curb risky behaviour.

It has always been thought that Britain opposed the idea, because of fears it could damage the interests of the City of London, Europe’s foremost financial centre.

But finance minister Alistair Darling said “times change” after

12 months in which G20 governments had been forced to inject billions of dollars to rescue banks from collapse.

A levy, Darling said, was one way that banks could contribute to the “wellbeing of the world” — and, more pertinently, provide funds to use if they needed bailing out again.

But just hours after Brown gave the Tobin Tax idea fresh impetus in the Scottish town of St Andrews, where the two-day G20 finance ministers meeting wrapped up on Saturday, the United States appeared to shoot it down in flames.

US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said his country had not changed its long-held opposition to an idea first floated in the 1970s.

“No, that’s not something that we’re prepared to support,” he told Sky News television on Saturday.

Later, Geithner told the end-ofmeeting news conference that “it is fair to say that we agree that we have to build a system in which taxpayers are not exposed to risk of loss in the future”.

But while he refused this time to say if Washington would actively oppose a levy on global financial transactions, his assertion that it was “an idea that has been around a long time” spoke volumes.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund, the very body which the G20 has asked to study the feasibility of such a measure, was blunt in his assessment.

TAWANG - The Dalai Lama visited a remote Tibetan monastery in northeast India on Sunday at the start of a trip that has infuriated China, which claims the surrounding Himalayan region as its own.

Thousands of Buddhists gave the Tibetan spiritual leader, who has lived in exile in India for 50 years, a rousing welcome as he arrived at the Tawang monastery, perched at 3,500 metres (11,400 feet) in Arunachal Pradesh state.

“We are very pleased and blessed to have His Holiness here,” said Sarwang Lama, a monk attired in a

new maroon robe, as Tibetan prayer flags fluttered in the air and posters of the Dalai Lama adorned streets and rooftops.

“The Dalai Lama is very happy and is excited to be in Arunachal Pradesh,” T.G. Rinpoche, a senior Buddhist and former state minister, told AFP. Sandwiched between Myanmar,

Bhutan and Tibet, the lush, forested state of Arunachal is governed by India but claimed by China. Beijing has slammed the visit as a provocation aimed at harming relations between China and India.

Tawang — 400 years old and the second largest Tibetan monastery in India — holds strong memories for the Dalai Lama.

When he fled Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule, Arunachal was his point of entry to India and he took refuge in Tawang at the start of his decades in exile.

AL-KHUBAH - Saudi forces pounded Yemeni rebels on Saturday for a fifth straight day as Yemeni President Ali Abdallah Saleh ruled out a truce in his war on the Shiite insurgents.

Huge smoke plumes could be seen rising above Jebel al-Dukhan, a 2,000-metre (6,600-foot) peak on the border near the town of Al-Khubah, a sign of continued bombing by Saudi fighter jets, residents said.

Saudi artillery shelled apparent rebel positions to the south, the residents said as medics reported seven Saudis and an unknown number of rebels had been killed since Tuesday.

“We’re coming to grips with these traitors, these renegades, and daily we are losing scores of martyrs from our best officers and soldiers and citizens,” Saleh said during a speech at Balhaf in the Gulf of Aden.

“But their blood is not being shed in vain and there will be no reconciliation, no truce nor stoppage to the war until we see the end of this small group of deviants,” he said without mentioning a Saudi incursion into Yemen on Wednesday.

Meanwhile there was no confirmation of rebel claims they had seized a number of Saudi soldiers.

KATHMANDU - Forest warden Narendra Man Babu Pradhan is on the frontline of Nepal’s battle against poachers and he grimaces as he recalls the recent discovery of an injured rhino whose horn had been cut off.

“We found a male rhino with bullet in his head around a lake in the park. It was a horrific sight,” said Pradhan, who was informed by tour guides about the injured animal.

“The poachers had cut the horn off without killing it and it seemed in great pain,” said the chief warden of the Chitwan National Park in southwest Nepal, a UNESCO world heritage site that is popular with foreign tourists.

Pradhan, who said the incident was the worst of his 20-year wildlife career, did everything he could to save the rhino but it died within two weeks.

In Nepal, poaching is getting worse, conservationists say, and the country has emerged as a hub for the illegal trade in animal parts given its strategic location between India, the source of material, and the Chinese market.

Porous borders, a lack of coordination between countries in the region and political instability in Nepal mean the men with guns and underworld connections are gaining the upper hand.

“The disappearance of tigers and seizures of skins, bones and rhino

horns indicate poaching and trafficking is growing,” Shiva Raj Bhatta, spokesman at Nepal’s department of national parks and wildlife conservation, told AFP. “Our wildlife is in a critical stage.

We believe Nepal is fast developing as an international hub for wildlife trade and turning into a poacher’s paradise.”

Chitwan Park has lost 24 rhinos — 17 of them killed by poachers — in the past 18 months.

The figures for Asian big cats are not encouraging either.

A new tiger census carried out earlier this year showed that there were 121 adult tigers in Nepal’s parks. In two parks in southwestern Nepal, the numbers fell by 60 percent, from 65 to 26.

World Bank president Robert Zoellick, who sent a video message to a tiger conservation forum at the end of October, said that traders and poachers were better organised than policymakers and conservationists.

“At present the illegal trade in wildlife is estimated at over 10 billion dollars (annually) across Asia — second only to weapons and drug smuggling,” he said.

In India, where tiger numbers are dwindling, experts say the border between India and Nepal serves as the principal route for contraband from India to the main market in China.

Poachers bribe poor forest dwellers to guide them through the dense jungles.

Part of the problem in Nepal, explained Bhatta, is that recent political turmoil has handed smugglers the opportunity to expand their operations.

Nepal’s decade-long civil war between Maoist rebels and the state ended in 2006 with a UN-brokered peace agreement.

Since then the country has seen tumultuous change, with the ultraleftists winning landmark polls, abolishing the 240-year-old monarchy and declaring Nepal a secular state before their government fell in May. “Before the peace accord, the army used to be mobilised both inside and outside the parks, which created a psychological deterrent to the poachers,” Bhatta said.

“Now the army is confined just inside the parks and in barracks.”

MIAMI - Mexico’s government issued a hurricane warning on Saturday as a strengthening tropical storm Ida bore down on the country’s Yucatan peninsula.

Ida was quickly picking up strength and could again become a hurricane late Saturday, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said, adding that the storm threatened to hit the United States on Wednesday.

At 1800 GMT the center of Ida was located about 370 kilometers (230 miles) southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, and about 370 kilometers (230 miles) south of the western tip of Cuba, the NHC said.

“Reports from an Air Force Reserve aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 110 kilometers (70 miles) per hour, with higher gusts,” making it a strong tropical storm.

Ida could become a hurricane late Saturday, “but weakening is expected after Ida enters the Gulf of Mexico,”

the NHC said.

Ida was moving northward at 15 kilometers per hour, and was forecast to pick up speed, turn northwest, and touch the northern portion of the Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday, then move into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.

Cuba also issued a tropical storm warning for the Pinar del Rio province.

The storm is expected to dump up to 13 centimeters (five inches) of rain over parts of the Yucatan peninsula and Cuba, “with possible isolated maximum amounts” of 25 centimeters (10 inches).

On Friday, Ida battered Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast despite being downgraded to a tropical depression.

Heavy rains from Ida swelled Nicaraguan rivers, destroying an estimated 530 houses and hitting remote communities in one of Central America’s poorest nations.

The NHC warned rains could produce flash floods and mudslides in Central America and the Caribbean.

WASHINGTON - Beth Williams traveled hundreds of miles to the US capital to loudly rail against a looming health care bill, then tracked down her congressman for a heart-to-heart over the legislation she was sure he would support.

The divorced 45-year-old from Canton, Ohio, lost her job at a car parts plant 20 months ago and has no health insurance, but in an impassioned encounter with freshman Democrat John Boccieri implored him not to vote for a bill crafted by his party that would help cover millions like her but that she and fellow conservatives decry as a financial boondoggle.

Boccieri’s office said Saturday, even as lawmakers raucously debated the bill, that he was still undecided on whether or not to vote for the most ambitious overhaul of its kind in more than a generation.

“I’m hoping we might strike a chord with him,” Williams told AFP. “But I’m worried he’ll vote down party lines.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hoped as much, predicting that the 10year, trillion-dollar measure will earn the 218 votes needed to pass in a vote as early as Saturday night. It would still need to be approved by the Senate before it reaches President Barack Obama’s desk.

Republican leaders vowed a united front against it, and Pelosi faced enough of a struggle to keep Democrats from defecting over the bill’s language on abortion and immigration that Obama headed to Congress Saturday to personally woo wavering Democrats like Boccieri.

The US legislative system may be a world away from small-town America, but the marbled halls of Congress are open to the public,

maintaining the cherished opportunity for constituents to address grievances directly with their lawmakers.

Sometimes, the effort pays off.

After catching an overnight bus to Washington for a “Kill the Bill” rally Thursday at the US Capitol, Williams and some 10 others from Ohio’s 16th district made their way to her appointment with Boccieri.

“Our economy has been under attack. We’ve lost our free market,” Williams began, describing her fears of how a government takeover of health care would balloon the national debt and send the United States down the path to socialized medicine.

“This is something that is dear to my heart,” she told Boccieri, 40, on the Capitol steps. “I love this country to death. I would never go anywhere else,” she said, her voice cracking.

“But if things continue the way this current administration and this Congress is trying to go, I will not hesitate to leave this country.”

Boccieri, an air force pilot who flew missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, listened somberly as Williams and others protested the agenda cast

by Obama on health care, a cap-andtrade system to fight climate change, and what they see as government takeover of the economy.

When pressed on how he’ll vote for the health bill, Boccieri pointed to the sky-high costs of not reforming the system.

The congressman has anguished over the legislation. He and his team have held nearly 150 roundtable meetings and listened to scores of voters as part of what he described as “a long, thoughtful, and sometimes emotional” process.

“We need to have a debate about how we go forward, because right now we have an unsustainable future with respect to health care,” he told the group.

The Indonesian government has extended by one week the stay permit of 78 Sri Lankan illegal immigrants on board an Australian-

flagged ship in Bintan district’s waters, Riau Islands province, foreign ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said Friday. said.

Summit to boost tourism investment: ASITA Government preparing IDR1.3 trillion for family of hope program Antara

JAKARTA - The Association of the Indonesian Tour & Travel Agencies (Asita) said tourism investment in Indonesia would grow positively after the holding of last month’s national summit.

“The investment in the tourism sector will grow positively, though it would not be as rapid as our expectation,” Asita Vice Chairman for Jakarta Jongki Adiyasa said here over the weekend.

He said that significant growth could however be expected from certain tourism sectors such as hotels and MICE (meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition) programs.

The Asita chairman said he was convinced that the investment in the hotel and MICE sectors would grow significantly in line with the improvement of the country’s economic business climate.

Unluckily however, the good investment climate was unlikely to be followed by all business sectors in tourism as a whole, he said.

“The causes of this condition included the fact

that there are many inconsistent polices in the tourism sector which often overlap between those issued by the central government and those by the regional administrations,” the Asita chairman said.

He cited as an example the police numbers of vehicles for a tourism fleet in Bali and Jakarta.

“In Bali they are required to use private plate numbers while in Jakarta they have to use service ones. Thus, in Bali, a fleet has to pay tax higher than one that has to be paid in Jakarta,” he said.

Jongki said that many investors were actually waiting for the government’s consistent policies before they could go ahead with making a serious investment in Indonesia.

He considered that consistency was important because the tourism business was sensitive to policy changes. The more frequent change in the policy the bigger the loss a tourism business would likely to suffer.

Therefore, Asita was calling on policy makers to be consistent in drawing up their policies which had to be synchronized with those produced in the regions.

YOGYAKARTA - The government through the Ministry of Social Affairs is preparing a fund of Rp1.3 trillion to finance a Family of Hope Program (PKH) in 2010, a cabinet minister said.

“The funds are being prepared for 720,000 selected poor families. These families have to meet the condition before they could receive the assistance,” Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri said here on Sunday.

The minister said that the PKH program was part of the government’s efforts to reduce the number of poor people to 8-10 percent in the coming five years from 14-15 percent at present.

The PKH program is a scheme in which the government provides cash to a very poor family (RTSM) based on certain categories in an effort to develop the country’s human resources in the field of education and health.

The target of the PKH program is an RSTM which has at least one family member at age between 0 and 15 years, or an expectant mother in selected region.

“The recipient of this program must be a mother or women who are taking care of a child in the family concerned. This is intended to empower women,” the minister said.

He said that the would-be recipients must sign an agreement which specified that they should sent children of 7-15 years to schools, or children of 16-18 years who had not yet finished their nineyear basic education.

Besides, they had also take children of 0-6 years to health care centers based on the health care procedures. Those who were pregnant were expected to check their health regularly based on the PKH procedures.

The minister said that the program had been carried out in a number of countries such as in Latin American nations.

In Indonesia it had been started in 2007 and was expected to continue until 2015.

Bali Today Number of British, France tourist arriving in Bali increasing Antara

DENPASAR - The number of British tourists visiting the Indonesian resort island of Bali in the January-August 2009 period increased 10.50 percent to 58,560 from 52,994 in the same period a year earlier, a statistics official said.

“With he increasing number of British tourists arriving in Bali, Britain has ranked eighth in the list of biggest countries sending tourists to Bali,” Head of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) for Bali province, Ida Komang Wisnu said here on Sunday.

He said that Britain was ranked eighth after Australia, Japan, China, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan and France.

Wisnu said Britain contributed 3.81 percent to the total foreign tourist arrivals in Bali, which reached 1.5 million people.

On the national scale, more than 4.61 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia in the first nine months of 2009, up 1.07 percent from the same period last year.

“In September 2009 alone, the number of tourist arrivals was 493,799,” head of the tourism ministry’s data processing and network system center Ir. Wibowo said early this week.

Compared to the same period last year, the number of tourist arrivals in September 2009 slightly fell 1.44 percent, he said.

He said seven entry points including Ngurah Rai, Polonia and Sam Ratulangi Airports saw an increase in the number of tourist arrivals in September 2009.

In the meantime, the number of

Australian, French, Saudi Arabian, UAE, and Chinese tourists to Indonesia has also increased significantly.

“The number of foreign tourists to Indonesia in the January-September 2009 period increased by an average of more than two digits,” Wibowo said.

According to the center, the number of Australian tourists in the January-September 2009 period reached 368,236, which is a 26.66 percent increase, and French tourists reached 115,872, up by 26.67 percent.

In the meantime, the number of Saudi, UAE, and Chinese tourists reached respectively 40,374, 2,902, and 262,140, or an increase by respectively 24.33, 33.18, and 20.07 percent.

The number of French tourist arrivals in Bali went up by 73,167 or 39.98 percent from January to August 2009 from that in the same period in 2008.

France was among the top 10 countries contributing to Bali’s tourist dollar earnings, added Wisnu.

The European country was on the seventh rank after Australia, Japan, China, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan.

France accounted for about 4.76 percent of the total number of foreign tourists visiting Bali (1,538,048) during the January-August period in 2009, he said.

DENPASAR - After Bali Province failed to invite investors to build toll road and bridge connecting Serangan to Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua, later it was offered fly-over and subway to overcome the traffic jam on the route of Bypass Ngurah Rai ranging from Dewa Ruci roundabouts, Tuban T-junction up to Nusa Dua. The Head of Bali Public Works Service, I Gusti Nyoman Sura Adnyana, said the matter, Friday (Nov 6).

Such an offer related to green light rendered by Minister of Public Works, Djoko Kirmanto, after seeing the design of fly-over and subway. Technically, there was no problem. “However, we should also consider it in terms of customary and cultural aspects,” he said.

Seemingly, Minister of Public Works realized that it was not easy to build fly-over in Bali as it concerned with customary and cultural aspects. This matter has once been discussed at Warung Beras Bali by inviting resource person Ida

Pedanda Gunung, customary figure and discoverer of Sosrobahu technique, Ida Cokorde Sukawati. However, it was encountered a cross opinion regarding to fly-over. “This problem should be resolved at regional level before proposing its budget to central government,” said Minister of Public Works as quoted by the Head of Bali Public Works Service.

His party also expected that government dared allocate a budget for the development of road and SeranganTanjung Benoa Bridge when there were no investors showing interest to take the road project.

Previously, the road and Serangan-Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua Bridge has been offered for two times to Toll Road Development Authority (BPJT) to look for investor. However, no investors looked to be interested as it was not profitable.

Lately, there was an issue that investors from China and Korea would have an interest to build the toll road and bridge. Yet, the party of Bali House felt pessimistic it could be realized. “The route is short, only 9 km and dominant users will be motorbike,” he said. (029)

(Spice Pastes) Balinese food gets its characteristic flavor from a blend of spices, herbs, roots and other savory ingredients, which are prepared in different ways. The basic seasonings (known as base – pronounced barseh – is sometimes finely chopped or sliced, other times pounded to a fine paste. BUSINESS Nobel laureate says global crisis a chance India PM invites world to invest to change business in economy under reform Agence France-Presse

WOLFSBURG - Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus calls the global economic crisis “an excellent opportunity to reflect and redesign” businesses, and devote creative ones to solving social problems.

Yunus, who with his Grameen Bank — which gives tiny loans to the very poor to help start businesses — won the 2006 Peace Prize, told media here on Saturday: “Any problem has a potential of being addressed with a social business.”

“Social business being a business where you don’t make money,” he explained. “Zero profit for the investors.”

The ground-breaking “microcredit” banker from Bangladesh is backed by corporations like food giant Danone, global water group Veolia, sportswear company Adidas, software pioneer SAP and academics at Kyushu University in Japan.

The first Global Grameen Meeting of companies, foundations, think-tanks, scientific experts and other institutions was hosted by Europe’s largest carmaker Volkswagen at its headquarters in Wolfsburg, northern Germany.

Grameen is a Bengali word for village, and “was chosen to indicate that big projects may start small,” a statement said.

The forum’s ambitious goal is to eliminate poverty by 2030 in both the developing world and advanced economies.

Ideas that sprouted on the Indian sub-continent are being transplanted in Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, and in France, where Danone will draw on its experience with Yunus in Bangladesh to launch a project for the

poor in Paris.

“It’s really a source of inspiration,” Danone representative Emmanuel Faber told a press conference in the company of Yunus and the other groups.

He underscored the “new processes, new ideas, new ways of working that social business has driven into the mainstream way of Danone doing business.”

The big group’s have not decided to ditch profits altogether but are setting up subsidiaries to work on the social business model in addressing problems with the environment, health care, nutrition and unemployment.

“Each one is dedicated to solving a particular social problem,” Yunus said.

Hans Reitz, co-founder with Yunus and director of the Grameen Creative Lab that brought together varied sectors to brainstorm for solutions, said his group would launch seven small companies in Germany with no more than five to seven employees.

“You can start small and give it a try, find out if it works or if it doesn’t work,” he said, and share the results across what Faber said was now “a global network of people thinking along these lines.”

Faber quoted Danone founder Antoine Riboud as stressing “there could not be long-term wealth creation without social progress.”

Making cakes, candles and music CDs allowed German and immigrant youth to “start a small business and create an identity,” he said.

“You can create a job for others, you don’t have to wait to have a job,” Reitz stressed as the eurozone struggles to reduce chronic unemployment.

Yunus believes social businesses can unite public sector and charity goals with the dynamics of an enterprise.

“If you can design businesses, bring the power of business, and the technology of businesses and the creativity of businesses to bear on a problem, maybe we can solve it,” he said.

Taiwan, China to sign financial cooperation pact: report Agence France-Presse

TAIPEI - Taiwan is expected to forge an agreement on financial cooperation with China “soon”, in yet another sign of evolving ties between the two former bitter rivals, it was reported Sunday.

A senior Taiwanese official in charge of relations with China said over the weekend the formal signing of the agreement, which calls for closer banking, insurance and securities cooperation, “could take place soon,” local media reported.

Negotiations on the agreement “are almost completed,” said Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the quasi-official Straits Exchange Foundation.

The foundation and its Chinese

counterpart, the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait have been authorised separately by their governments to handle exchanges in the absence of official contact between the two sides.

Relations between China and Taiwan have improved markedly since May 2008, when the Chinafriendly Ma Ying-jeou assumed the presidency, pledging to push for closer economic cooperation and allow in more Chinese tourists.

The two sides held their first direct dialogue in 10 years in Beijing in June last year, leading to regular direct flights across the Taiwan Strait and measures to boost tourism.

Taiwan has governed itself since 1949 at the end of a civil war,

but Beijing regards the island as a renegade province awaiting reunification with the mainland.

NEW DELHI - India’s premier rolled out the welcome mat for foreign investors Sunday, promising to step up economic reforms to draw global funds and put the country on a high growth path.

Prime Minster Manmohan Singh, speaking to a blue-chip international economic summit, said policy would be guided by the desire to create “an investor friendly environment.”

India had attracted foreign direct investment of more than 120 billion dollars since 2001-02 but more was needed to develop its vast economy, he told a World Economic Forum meeting in New Delhi.

“You are all welcome in our efforts,” he told 600 delegates from around the world, adding that the government wanted to push through reforms to make the country more attractive for investment.

“We need to strengthen our financial system in various ways to make sure it can provide what is needed for our development,” he said, promising to open up insurance and other financial sectors more aggressively to generate funds. Since winning a decisive re-election victory in May, the Congress-led government has been able to pursue reforms blocked in the last parliament by communist opposition.

He said the government was aiming for 6.5 percent growth in this fiscal year to March 2010 despite the worst monsoon in nearly four decades that has hit agriculture, and he forecast “over seven percent” expansion next year.

“I am happy India has been able to face the global economic downturn better than most other countries in the world,” he said.

LOS ANGELES– R&B singer Rihanna broke her silence about the night her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown attacked her, saying he had bitten her, put her in a headlock and left her bleeding and swollen.

“It wasn’t the same person that says ‘I love you.’ It was not those...eyes,” Rihanna, 21, told Diane Sawyer in an interview on ABC television’s “Good Morning America” show.

“He had...no soul in his eyes. Just blank...He was clearly blacked out.

There was no person when I looked at him,” she said.

Brown, 20, singer of hits like “Kiss, Kiss,” was sentenced to five years probation and 180 hours of community service for the assault in February on the eve of the Grammy Awards.

He has apologized publicly and although the pair briefly reunited, Rihanna said she now has “no desire at all to be with him.”

Rihanna said the attacks started with an argument over a text message Brown received while they were driving home from an industry party.

“I couldn’t take it that he kept ly-

ing to me. And he couldn’t take it that I wouldn’t drop it. And...it was ugly,” she told Sawyer. She acknowledged police reports that Brown bit her, put her in a head lock until she had trouble breathing, and punched her several times in the eye.

“I fended him off with my feet...but it was not like, it was not like a fight with each other. I just...I really just wanted it to stop,” she said.

Her screams prompted a passerby to call the police.

“I was bleeding, I was swollen in the face,” she said. “So there was no way of me getting home, except for, my next option was to get out of the car and walk. Start walking in a gown, in a bloody face. So I really don’t know what my plan was.”

Rihanna said although her wounds had long healed, she had flashbacks and scars inside.

“The thing that men don’t realize when they hit a woman, it’s...the face, the broken arm, the black eye, it’s going to heal. That’s not the problem.

It’s the scar inside.

“You flashback...you...you remember all the time. It comes back to you whether you like it or not. And it’s painful. So I don’t think he understood that,” she said.

Nicole Kidman Cancels Kenya Trip Due to Flu Nicole Kidman has fallen ill, and has been forced to cancel a scheduled trip to Kenya. She’s come down with the flu— regular flu, not swine flu—and decided on staying home to take care of herself.

Nicole was supposed to go to Kenya this week as part of an initiative launched by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (Unifem).

She’d planned on visiting schools and hospitals in the country and raise awareness of women’s rights. A representative for Kidman says in a statement, “Nicole is deeply sorry that, because she is ill with the seasonal flu, she cannot come to Kenya.

Perry blames Tyler’s lack of communication for the split saying, “He’s notorious for that. That’s one thing I’ve learned to live with. I try to overlook it. I like to pick my battles.

“Frankly, the last few months I’ve been wanting not to rock the boat. I don’t want him canceling any more gigs. We really wanted to do these last four. We just kind of didn’t want to call him out or anything and get him anymore p**sed off, for whatever reason. So we just let things lie.

“So we did the gigs and, like I said, I got off the plane and saw this online. That’s how I know about it...

He has had no contact with me or the other band members.”

Perry added that the group will go on with or without Tyler. He adds, “Right now I’m adjusting to how we’re going to go on.

His passenger, Demaris Meyer, had sued Freeman in the US District Court in Mississippi for compensation, saying the injuries and

Meyer, who had to be cut out of wreckage of the vehicle by responders, suffered broken bones and head injuries which had left her with cognitive difficulties and short term memory loss, according to earlier statements.

The case has now been dismissed after both parties agreed an out-ofcourt settlement, Meyer’s lawyer Gloria Allred said Friday.

“Ms Meyer is pleased that the matter is resolved and the case is settled,” Allred said in an email to AFP. Freeman won an Academy Award for his role in 2004’s Clint Eastwood boxing drama “Million Dollar Baby” and is famous for his authoritative voice that has been used to narrate documentaries and commercials as well as film roles. He has been nominated for an Oscar a total of four times.

Freeman will soon be seen in another collaboration with Eastwood, “Invictus,” a film based on the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Freeman portrays former South African president Nelson Mandela.

TOKYO – It may sound like a sci-fi vision, but Japan’s space agency is dead serious: by 2030 it wants to collect solar power in space and zap it down to Earth, using laser beams or microwaves.

The government has just picked a group of companies and a team of researchers tasked with turning the ambitious, multi-billion-dollar dream of unlimited clean energy into reality in coming decades.

With few energy resources of its own and heavily reliant on oil imports, Japan has long been a leader in solar and other renewable energies and this year set ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets.

But Japan’s boldest plan to date is the Space Solar Power System (SSPS), in which arrays of photovoltaic dishes several square kilometres (square miles) in size would hover in geostationary orbit

outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

“Since solar power is a clean and inexhaustible energy source, we believe that this system will be able to help solve the problems of energy shortage and global warming,” researchers at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, one of the project participants, wrote in a report.

“The sun’s rays abound in space.”

The solar cells would capture the solar energy, which is at least five times stronger in space than on Earth, and beam it down to the ground through clusters of lasers or microwaves.

These would be collected by gigantic parabolic antennae, likely to

be located in restricted areas at sea or on dam reservoirs, said Tadashige Takiya, a spokesman at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

The researchers are targeting a one gigawatt system, equivalent to a medium-sized atomic power plant, that would produce electricity at eight yen (cents) per kilowatt-hour, six times cheaper than its current cost in Japan.

The challenge — including transporting the components to space — may appear gigantic, but Japan has been pursuing the project since 1998, with some 130 researchers studying it under JAXA’s oversight.

Last month Japan’s Economy and Trade Ministry and the Science Ministry took another step toward making the project a reality, by selecting several Japanese high-tech giants as participants in the project.

SHANGHAI- The official launch of Apple’s iPhone in China has been disappointing at best for mobile operator China Unicom, with the grey market still booming and competitors offering worthy alternatives, experts say.

Unicom unveiled Apple’s iconic handset in Beijing on October 30, but the few hundred people who braved the cold wind and rain to snap up the iPhone paled in comparison to hordes seen in New York in 2007 or Tokyo and Hong Kong last year.

Vendors and experts say the high price, disabled WiFi and wide range of other options has so far dogged sales in the world’s biggest cell phone market of nearly 720 million users.

Unicom said last week that it had sold 5,000 units in the first weekend, but has released no figures since.

Unicom, the country’s secondlargest mobile operator by subscribers, is offering a number of contract deals that bring the price of the iPhone down — but it still costs more than 500 dollars, out of range for most consumers. Without a subscription, the handset can cost up to 1,000 dollars. iPhone’s WiFi functions have been disabled to comply with Chinese government regulations — another downside for tech-savvy buyers who know they can easily find fake and smuggled versions that will offer them more complete options.

Liu Dongping, the Shanghaibased business director for vendor Quickway Industrial Corp. Ltd., said he had sold dozens of Unicom iPhones so far, but called the lack of WiFi a “critical problem”.

“Unicom’s iPhone has got a lukewarm response from the market so far,” Liu said, also pointing to the limited gaming software available on the handset.

“Most customers who are interested in buying iPhones are highend customers. They are smart enough to understand how quality varies with price and model.”

He said he carefully considered all possible geological and biological explanations for the features in the rock and was able to rule them out one by one. His investigation included comparisons with dinosaur footprints in similar-aged rocks in other parts of the world.

The footprints were made in beach sands and were probably quickly covered and preserved by mud from subsequent tides.

“What makes this discovery special

is the unique preservation of the footprints in an environment where they could easily have been destroyed by waves, tides, or wind,” Browne said.

As with much of New Zealand, northwest Nelson was largely submerged between 70 and 20 million years ago and the footprints would have been covered by hundreds of metres of marine sediments.

However, after the country was uplifted and northwest Nelson emerged from the sea, the overlying sedimentary rock has been eroded away over the past 20 million years to expose the footprints again, Browne said.

Federer sets up Basel title showdown with Djokovic Agence France Presse

BASEL- Roger Federer beat childhood friend Marco Chiudinelli 7-6 (9/7), 63 on Sunday to clinch a 19th straight victory at the Swiss Indoors tournament and set up a final with Novak Djokovic.

Federer will be bidding for a fourth consecutive title here when he faces the secondseeded Serb, who saved three match points in spectacular fashion to win a dramatic semifinal over Radek Stepanek 6-7 (4/7), 7-5, 62.

World number one Federer leads Djokovic 9-4 in their career series, standing 2-2 his season with his rival.

“Djokovic has been playing some solid tennis, he’s stayed calm in tough situations twice this week in matches,” said the Swiss.

“We usually have tough matches, it depends a lot on who has the better day. I’m happy where my game’s at right now.

“But I hope to pick up a bit more speed for the final. The crowd will be on my side and that’s an advantage.”

Federer last lost in Basel in 2003 to Ivan Ljubicic, returned in 2006 and has won the last three editions.

Chiudinelli saved a set point in the combative opening set, but then was passed on one of his own before Federer landed the tiebreaker.

Federer took control 4-1 in the second on his way to a 59th victory this season.

“I tried to be focussed, especially in the tiebreak,” said Federer. “On this surface you can suddely be down love-30, it can go quickly.”

Djokovic, winner of three titles in 2009, moved into his ninth final of the year and remains the leader in ATP matches won in the season on 70.

He looked to be on the brink of a loss, trailing a set and 4-5 after Stepanek had taken the lead with his sixth ace in the previous game.

Facing three match points in the tenth game after a double-fault, Djokovic calmly saved two with winners while a Stepanek error accounted for the third.

DALLAS- Germany’s Dirk Nowitzki scored a game-high 29 points as the Dallas Mavericks romped past Toronto 129-101 in a National Basketball Association game Sunday.

Nowitzki added nine rebounds and dished out four assists. Jason Terry and Shawn Marion scored 19 and 18 points for Dallas, who have won four of their past five games.

Josh Howard added 16 points, and James Singleton came off the bench to score 10 points for Dallas at the American Airlines Center arena.

Chris Bosh led Toronto with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Andrea Bargnani scored 22 points, while Jose Calderon had 13 and seven assists in the loss.

Dallas broke the game open by scoring 10 unanswered points early in the third quarter to take a 70-52 lead.

While Memphis Grizzlies guard Allen Iverson has left the National Basketball Association team and headed to his home in Atlanta to deal with personal issues.

Iverson, who has expressed his displeasure at not starting for the Grizzlies this season, is in his first year with the team.

The nine-time all-star missed the first three games of the regular season with a hamstring injury.

The 34-year-old Iverson is averaging 12.3 points and 3.7 assists per game.

SHANGHAI- Tiger Woods was widely expected to be in the hunt when it came to the crunch at the HSBC Champions on Sunday, but the frustrated American world number one had an off day.

Woods started the final round in joint second place, two shots behind eventual winner Phil Mickelson but faded to finish five strokes adrift after a round of 72.

Nothing went right, he said.

“Anything that could go wrong went wrong for me,” he said. “Just one of those days where I didn’t put it together at the right time.”

He self-destructed with a double bogey on the fourth when he drove his ball into an adjacent canal and had to take a drop.

He recovered to leave himself with a fourfoot putt for a bogey but the ball agonisingly bounced out of the hole and he lost two shots.

It didn’t get any better with another bogey on the sixth, when his 10-foot downhill par putt ran five feet past the hole.

He was clearly getting frustrated and when a camera clicked as he was teeing off at the seventh and his shot found a bunker, he shouted “I just can’t get a swing” and started swearing under his breath.

The seventh looked like finishing him. His shot out of the bunker found the rough and then he put himself in the sand again to drop another shot. Mickelson birdied that hole and Woods was six behind his arch rival.

But three consecutive birdies, on nine, 10 and 11, put him back in the hunt and two more on 14 and 15 raised his hopes before a bogey on the last summed up his disappointing day.

He said there was nothing wrong with his game, it was just not his day.

“No, just one of those days. I got off to a bad start early and battled back to eight-underpar for the day,” he said.

“But then I got caught a little flyer there on the 18th and hit in the water.”

Asked what he would do on Monday, he replied: “As of right now, I don’t really plan on tomorrow. I just want to get out of here.”

Woods, who has won 16 of the 30 World Golf Championships events he has entered, next heads to Melbourne, where he will play the Australian Masters.

BARCELONA- Ten-man Real Madrid survived a late fightback by Atletico Madrid to win 3-2 and keep the pressure on Spanish league leaders Barcelona on Sunday.

In an action-packed derby at the Calderon, Kaka gave Real the lead after just five minutes although there were suspicions of a foul on Cleber Santana in the lead-up.

Chances came and went for both sides but Real were more clinical with Marcelo doubling the advantage with an acute drive with his weaker right foot.

Still not fully fit, Sergio Aguero was introduced in the second half and after running through on goal was brought down by Sergio Ramos who was dismissed.

However, Real went further ahead through Gonzalo Higuain after 73 minutes before Atletico launched an assault which saw Diego Forlan and Aguero both score.

Real coach Manuel Pellegrini said: “In the first half, Atletico hardly caused us any trouble and then we still had everything controlled until Ramos was sent off.

“We have to improve because we lack consistency but I have a good feeling about the team.”

Atletico coach Quique Flores admitted that the result leaves the team in a precarious position in the league.

“The alarm bells are ringing for us but with fight and character we have to take on the next few games and start moving up the table,” he said.

Youngster Pedro Rodriguez scored a brace

as Barcelona kept up a one-point lead over Real with a 4-2 win over Real Mallorca. Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola sent out a second-string side with Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Leo Messi and Dani Alves all missing from the starting line-up.

Barcelona dominated the game and went ahead through Pedro after a delightful back-heel from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Jose Nunes levelled for Mallorca, heading home at the far post from a corner but Barcelona scored twice in the runup to half-time.

Pedro scored again and then Thierry Henry grabbed his first goal after an injury-plagued start to the season. Mallorca were unable make any real inroads after the break and substitute Messi increased Barcelona’s advantage from the penalty spot. There was still time at the end for a consolation from Alhassane Keita.

“It wasn’t all bad,” said Guardiola. “Last year nobody gave us any chance and each step that we made was met by surprise, but this year there is no room for surprises.”

A battling performance by Deportivo La Coruna saw them keep up their push for a place in Europe with a 2-0 win at Getafe despite being reduced to nine men.

Getafe had only lost once at home so far to Barcelona but they went behind after 14 minutes when Miguel Mista headed home a cross from full back Luis Felipe.

ROME- Juventus closed the gap on Inter Milan at the top of Serie A to four points on Sunday after a thrilling 5-2 win against Atalanta in Bergamo.

Mauro Camoranesi scored twice in as many minutes to give the Bianconeri a 2-0 lead at half-time. Valdes reduced the deficit early in the second half, but a Felipe Melo scorcher restored the two-goal advantage four minutes later.

Fabio Ceravolo set up a grandstand finish on 71 minutes, but late goals from Diego and David Trezeguet, with his record-equalling 167th for the club, left the scoreline looking slightly harsh for a valiant Atalanta.

Despite the five goals, and three other efforts ruled out, Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara praised his team’s defensive performance.

“This is the spirit I want Juve to play with,” he said. “We are playing a different system at the moment with playmakers but we also have to work hard. Those at the front are the first that have to defend so we don’t get left one-on-one at the back.

“We’ve only lost one in five now and we are getting better at playing without the ball - a sign of a great side. We’re working on confidence and obviously this result will help us a lot.”

Hoping to banish memories of their last outing in Serie A - a 3-2 loss to Napoli - Juventus began in positive fashion on a difficult, raindrenched surface. Stunned temporarily, Atalanta responded five minutes into the second half when Tiberio Guarente threaded a delightful ball to Valdes whose shot found its way past Gianluigi Buffon to cut the deficit.

Rampant Arsenal put bite on Wolves Agence France Presse

WOLVERHAMPTON- Arsenal underlined their credentials as serious challengers for the Premier League title with an imperious 4-1 win over Wolverhampton on Sunday.

Arsene Wenger’s side were widely written off as also-rans after an unsettling pre-season, but they look increasingly capable of pushing Chelsea and Manchester United for the English crown.

The Gunners were at their eye-catching best at Molineux as own goals from Ronald Zubar and Jody Craddock were followed by strikes from Cesc Fabregas and Andrey Arshavin to move them above United into second place - two points behind leaders Chelsea.

Wenger’s team are playing some of the best football in the country at present and are unquestionably the most lethal, with 55 goals in all competitions. Arsenal, who have gone four seasons without a trophy, are determined to muscle in on the title race this season and 24 hours before United and Chelsea locked horns at Stamford Bridge, they put down their own marker.

They are averaging three goals a game and hit that mark before half-time with a mix of brilliance and sheer good luck. Wolves played a major part in their own downfall, even though boss Mick McCarthy had insisted they would not roll over for the only team he would pay to watch in the top flight.

In a 14 minute spell, McCarthy’s side did not so much roll over as get well and truly mauled. Zubar started the downfall when he nudged Fabregas’s 28th minute corner into his own net after goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey made a hash of collecting inside the six-yard box.

Wenger hardly needed any luck but it came in bucketloads for a team he reckons could be as exciting as his ‘Invincibles’, who went through the entire 2003-04 league season without defeat. In the 36th minute, Eduardo’s chip was heading miles wide of the far post until striking Craddock’s head to loop over Hennessey. If the first two were lucky, the third from Fabregas was pure class.

The Arsenal captain finished off a move he started on the half-way line after Robin Van Persie’s brilliant lay-off. McCarthy knows life at this level was always going to be tough and things are not likely to get any easier at Chelsea next week.

At least Wolves, who are third from bottom of the table, limited the damage in the second period and restricted Arsenal to a solitary strike from Arshavin. The Russia winger volleyed in from the edge of the area - after a poor punch from Hennessey - to increase McCarthy’s misery. Craddock’s 89th minute header will be no consolation for McCarthy who has another relegation scrap looming and the former Republic of Ireland manager has his work cut out to survive.

Haye slays giant Valuev to claim WBA heavyweight title Agence France Presse

NUREMBERG- British challenger David Haye claimed the WBA heavyweight title on Sunday with a shock majority decision win against Russian giant Nikolai Valuev.

The 29-year-old from London is the new world champion after only three heavyweight fights, having stepped up from cruiserweight as the judges scored the 12-round fight 114-114 even, 116-112 and 116-112 in Haye’s favour.

“Ever since I was little, I said that one day I would be heavyweight champion of the world,” said Haye.

With superior footwork, Haye kept moving away from the Russian’s close-range punches and denied the 2.13m Valuev the chance to hang on and wear him down with his sheer size.

This was only Valuev’s second defeat - after losing to Ruslan Chagaev in April 2007 - and Haye gave away seven stones (44kg) in weight against the Russian and was 23cm shorter than the former champion.

Haye made a bright start, looking for weaknesses in Valuev’s defence and landed several shots to the upper body and one to the face while the Russian giant took up his usual

position shuffling around the middle of the ring.

There was a flurry of punches thrown towards the end of the second and Valuev stepped up at the start of the third, but it was Haye who caught the Russian with a quick left, right.

The Russian started the fourth with a mark to his right cheek and attempted to put Haye in the corner, but the Briton again wriggled out of danger, landed an arcing lefthook and kept moving to avoid the close-range punches.

With Valuev throwing countless punches, but landing few, Haye caught the Russian with another right, left, right combination in the fifth.

A heavy left to the side of the face from Haye caught Valuev before he followed up with a left, right combination at the start of the seventh while the Russian caught the challenger with several punches to shade the round.
