Public order officers (Satpol PP) of Karangasem Regency and element of justiciary team, last Wednesday (Jun 16), ordered to stop the construction project of villas on the beach area of Batudawa Kelod, Tulamben, Kubu, Karangasem. The action was taken because the project has not had any license and violated the shoreline limit as well.

Regional Regulation (Perda) No. 11/2000 states the distance of shoreline limit is 50 meter, but the owner of the villa, Made Swala, a local resident, established the villa at 30 meters from the shoreline to the outer wall. Swala admitted that he was the owner of the villa, but according to a source from surrounding resident, the investor was a foreigner.

Previously, local residents also informed to Bali Post if the construction project of a two-story hotels and restaurants violated the limit of shoreline. Likewise, the resident reported the case to Agency for Regional Development (Bappeda), subdistrict head of Kubu and other government element. As a follow up, the project had been inspected for some times by government, consisting of the subdis-

trict head of Kubu. Meanwhile, residents protesting and reporting the case claimed to feel concerned because foreigner was very concerned by complying with the laws and preserving the environment by meeting the stipulations of required shoreline limit, but ironically local residents even broke them.

Last Wednesday, Satpol PP chaired by its Chief Unit IB Anom Suryadarma together with justiciary team and subdistrict Head of Kubu IW Sutapa, Tourism Office, Art and Cultural Services, Bappeda and Regional Supervisory Inspectorate raided the location. Anom Suryadarma immediately handed over a warrant for the stoppage of the villa development project. From Arena of 32nd Bali Arts Festival:

Selonding, a bizarre traditional music for Deva Yajña THERE is another bizarre traditional gamelan music staged in the arena of the 32nd Bali Arts Festival. It was Selonding.

Selonding denotes an older sacred music. This traditional gamelan instrument poses a historical relic from the old art activities of the ancestor. It is one of the examples of an indigenous wisdom as ancestral heritage that should be preserved. Its existence stays to survive up to these days. This music heritage derived from our ancestors is still able to bridge the time of thousands of years with the present.

The Sudamala Selonding Gamelan Troupe from Intaran Hamlet, Pejeng, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, appeared to bring Selonding performance in the 32nd Bali Arts Festival, last Wednesday (Jun 16), at Angsoka stage. Reinforced by nine personnel, the troupe could display a number of

compositions with different saih namely Sekar Gadung, Rejang Ileh, Rejang Gucek, Dauh Tukad, Nyangnyangan, Rejeng Renteng, Capung Gando and Rejang Asep gamelan composition. The music composition itself was commonly used to accompany the procession of the Deva Yajña rituals.

Head of the Selonding Troupe, Made Sue, said the gamelan music had existed from time immemorial. The technique of playing the gamelan was relatively difficult. However, if there was earnest motivation to learn, young people could master.

“Difficult or not will depend on the motivation. Motivation is the main capital for mastering the music,” he said while feeling proud because younger generation had been much interested to play the traditional gamelan music.

Selonding itself had been closely associated with the Deva Yajña

rituals. Made Sue had obsession to make the gamelan music increasingly more surviving. In order this kind of gamelan music would not come to extinction, of course each customary village played an important role to preserve it. “Preservation is necessary to avoid any extinction,” he said.

Additionally, he hoped such unusual Selonding gamelan could be performed frequently in the Bali Arts Festival’s arena. By doing so, this kind of art would be increasingly recognized by society and not in name only. In Gianyar, added Sue, Selonding remained to grow in Tampaksiring, Blahbatuh, Sukawati, Ubud and Payangan.

“In the past, Selonding was indeed rare in South Bali like in Denpasar, Badung and Gianyar, but now it has been appearing in numbers.

Even, the younger generation has started being interested in the Selonding,” he observed. (08)

Customary Land Execution Almost two citizen groups clash Singaraja (Bali Post) -

Two groups of indigenous residents of Pakraman Batudinding and Bees in the village of Banjar Dinas Pegayaman Pegadungan and Countryside Agency, District Sukasada, Tuesday (16 / 6) yesterday, almost clashed. This occurred after the District Court (PN) Singaraja executed the plot of land which was previously to be disputes between the village and Banjar Pakraman Batudinding and Lebah.

Information obtained yesterday said the dispute between Banjar Pakraman Batudinding and Lebah that have occurred since 2002. Interestingly, Banjar Pakraman bee itself is part of Pakraman Batudinding.

Both of them fight over a parcel of garden land area of 1.5 hectares of plants with cloves and other crop productivity.

More interesting, Pakraman Batudinding had two Banjar pakraman, namely Banjar Pakraman Batudinding and Lebah. Banjar area Pakraman Batudinding administratively located in the Village area Pegadungan, while Banjar Pakraman Lebah administratively located in the Village area Pegayaman Service.

In the area of Banjar Pakraman Bees have a parcel of 1.5 hectares of garden containing plants cloves.

The land is tilled by a citizen and the results are entered into the Banjar Pakraman Bees. About a year ago in 2002, Pakraman Batudinding which is the parent of the Banjar Pakraman Bees requested that the results of that garden into Pakraman for the land claimed as the property Pakraman.

Tube Leakage, Shop Burnt Out Denpasar (Bali Post)-

Residents around Patih Nambi Street, West Denpasar, were disturbed. A shop owned by a Dutch resident, J. Feugene, was caught on fire last Wednesday (16/6). It’s strongly suspected it was caused by a gas tube leakage. There are no casualties in this incident although owner admitted have lost millions of rupiahs.

According to the owner’s wife, Ni Ketut Budiarti (52), the incident happen around 2.30 pm wita.

Budiarti was going to cook in the kitchen for a customer. All of a sudden fire came out from the regulator pipe as she was turning on the stove. “For sure I don’t know where it came from. But the fire just happened and so I ran straight away,” Budiarti said when met at location.

Not only Budiarti who ran away,

the customers also ran to save their lives. Panic came as the fire spread.

Local residents also tried to turn off the fire with what they have. But the fire became bigger and spreading to other places.

Not long after that, some fire brigade trucks came to location. Fire fighters then take action. With their hard work they managed to turn off the fire. But the 3 x 10 meters building had burn out and only debris

were left. “We have lost around IDR 50 million,” Budiarti admitted.

According to Budiarti, the 12 kilograms tube was just bought that morning. As usual it is used for business.

Budiarti is very confused why there’s a leakage when she is just using it for cooking when usually it is fine. Also before the incident there was no strong smell whatsoever in the kitchen. “I used it from the morning and it was okay,” she explained. (kmb21)

Overloaded With Patients

Klungkung Hospital Borrowed Medical Workers from Community Health Centers Klungkung Hospital is being overloaded with patients. The total of the workers are not balanced with the number of patients accepted. Meanwhile, they would not refuse patients as that is unreasonable. The result, they are thinking in borrowing medical workers from community health centers. The hospital is asking the Health Agency for this to happen.

Yet, what about the services in the community health centers? Is that not going to disturb?

Patients keep coming and mostly for third class (who’s holding Bali Mandara Health Insurance [JKBM]).

This is making the rooms full so some needed to be cared in the hospital corridors.

Last Tuesday (15/6), the hospital added extra 24 beds. There is a hospital ward (hospital ward C) completed with treatment supporting tools but it could not be used as there are no medical workers left. “We want to operate hospital ward C. That’s why we are coordinating with Klungkung Health Agency to get workers in that ward. Minimal helped by the medical workers from community health centers,” Doctor

Nyoman Kesuma stated, Head of Research and Development Klungkung Hospital.

Isn’t that going to disturb the services in community health centers?

When this was asked, Kesuma admitted some community health centers are shortage of workers and they are taking care of patients too. And for JKBM patients, they all came from the health centers. “But I am sure the Health Agency has the data and has sorted the problem,” Kesuma said and revealed that he at least needed 14 medical workers in hospital ward C. The borrowed medical workers are planned to be used until they are definitive workers for the hospital.

One of them is a health worker (CPNS) who got through in 2009’s formation. “We are hoping the letters of authority for these health workers are out soon so we can use them straight away,” Kesuma stated.

Head of Health Agency Klungkung, Doctor Ketut Sutarta, confirmed that he had received the Klungkung Hospital’s request. But the Health Agency only can provide 11 medical workers instead of the 14

needed. According to Sutarta, it doesn’t mean the community health centers have more. This is due to the hospital’s desperate need. But what if there are problems at the health centers as the workers are helping in the hospital? “I will take care of that problem,” Sutarta stated.

In other hand, Region Parliamentary members are asking the letters of authority for the health workers to be quickly done. They think that the executives are being slow in this process when actually the problem is in front of their eyes. “We really don’t know how far the process of the letters of authority for the health workers that have passed. We are going to check at Local Civil Service Agency.

We think this is better to be used rather than borrowing from community health centers,” Region Parliamentary Vice Leader, A.A. Anom Sarjana joned by member Nengah Arianta. According to the two of them, technically borrowing workers from health centers are possible as long as it’s not disturbing the services in the health centers and there’s a strong commitment from the hospital with the health agency. Now, more convenient access to BAF arena VISITORS of the 32nd Bali Arts Festival (BAF) going through the campus of Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) Denpasar should no longer follow the snaky routes to reach the booths. Visitors just stay to park the vehicles and the door

access to the area of Denpasar Art Center has been opened.

Unlike in the previous BAF, visitors had to pass through a long route.

In this year’s BAF, the entry access from Campus of ISI Denpasar is considered more spacious and convenient.

Similarly, the artists are no longer necessary to walk away because it has been made a wide entrance access to BAF arena. On that account, as soon as coming down from vehicle, visitors had arrived at BAF arena within a few steps away. (08)

KPAI hold Child Protection and Supervision Seminar Denpasar (Bali Post) -

Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) cooperate with the Commission Indonesian Child Protection Areas (KPAID) Bali to hold activities socialization and supervision of the implementation of child protection, in the Hotel Santhi Denpasar, for two days, 16-17 June 2010. These activities followed by all government agencies in the province of Bali and the various agencies in three districts namely Gianyar, Bangli and Tabanan.

Israel says it will ease Gaza land blockade AP

JERUSALEM – Israel will ease much of its land blockade on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, hoping to quell growing international criticism following a deadly sea raid.

The prime minister’s office said in a statement that Israeli leaders decided Thursday to expand the number of products Israel will allow into Gaza, including desperately needed construction materials.

The Israeli security cabinet on Thursday approved a plan to ease the blockade on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, a statement from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Ben-

jamin Netanyahu said.

Under the plan, Israel would “liberalise the system by which civilian goods enter Gaza (and) expand the inflow of materials for civilian projects that are under international supervision,” the statement said.

But it also stressed that Israel would “continue existing security procedures to prevent the inflow of weapons and war materiel.”

WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama Wednesday called a meeting of senators on clean energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuel as the country confronts the disastrous Gulf of Mexico oil spill, White House and senate sources said.

News of the bipartisan meeting set for Wednesday, aimed at jumpstarting Senate energy policy discussions, came just hours after Obama gave a somber debut Oval Office address on the worst environmental disaster in US history.

“The tragedy unfolding on our coast is the most painful and powerful reminder yet that the time to embrace a clean energy future is now,” Obama said in his address.

“It was clear to me that he’s not asking the Congress to pass another ordinary energy bill as we’ve done twice in last five year that hasn’t really changed our dependence on foreign oil or on fossil fuel gener-

Cameron vows to defend British interests at first EU summit AFP

BRUSSELS (AFP) – Prime Minister David Cameron entered his first EU summit on Thursday vowing to defend Britain’s “red lines” and implicitly criticising a French initiative for a eurozone economic government.

“We will of course always defend our national interests, as others do, and our national red lines,” he stressed.

“Our citizens want us to concentrate on substance not on more discussions about institutions or processes,” Barroso told reporters Cameron said such statements were “music to my ears,” underlining that “we should be focussing on the issues of substance and not of institutional reform.”

France had been calling for a form of economic government for the 16-nation eurozone to increase fiscal coordination and effectiveness. French President Nicolas Sarkozy reluctantly renounced his initiative on Monday in the face of opposition also from Germany which fears creating a two-speed Europe.

BERLIN (AFP) – A passenger train ploughed into a derailed freight train in northern Germany late Wednesday, leaving 16 people injured, one of them seriously, police said.

The regional passenger train carrying 66 people collided with a derailed wagon of the freight train at about 11:30 pm (2130 GMT) near the town of Peine in Lower Saxony state, Hanover police

spokesman Uwe Borchers said Thursday.

The driver of the passenger train was seriously injured while seven people needed hospital treatment.

Five of the freight train’s wag-

ons had derailed and one of them turned over onto a line reserved for passenger trains. The passenger train then ploughed into the wagon, and its locomotive and two carriages were derailed.

Australia teen charged over India student’s murder AFP

MELBOURNE (AFP) – A 15year-old Australian boy was charged on Thursday with the stabbing murder of Indian student Nitin Garg, which followed a string of attacks on Indians and threatened to derail ties with New Delhi.

The teenager, who cannot be named, appeared before the

Children’s Court after his arrest in a Melbourne suburb earlier Thursday.

His mother wept through the brief court hearing.

Garg, 21, was killed as he walked through parkland en route to work at a burger restaurant on January 2. He managed to stagger to the restaurant before collapsing and dying.

Activists stage a protest to highlight their anger at racial attacks on Indians in Australia

whose Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna called it a “heinous crime on humanity” and “an uncivilised brutal attack on innocent Indians”.

It came after a wave of attacks on Indian nationals who have arrived in the country attracted by its burgeoning overseas education sector and the prospect of gaining a permanent visa.

The muggings and beatings, accompanied by migration scams and colleges charging for substandard courses, prompted street protests by Indians in Melbourne and Sydney last year.

Officials predict Indian student arrivals will drop by a fifth this year after the attacks, hitting an industry which grew to 17.2 billion dollars (15.4 billion US) in 2008-2009, one of Australia’s biggest earners of foreign money.

The attacks were greeted with outrage by India’s media, with one newspaper cartoon comparing Australian police to the racist Ku Klux Klan for its handling of the Garg case.

However, Detective Inspector Bernie Edwards said on Thursday police did not believe racism was the motive.

“In our inquiries at this stage, we don’t believe it was racially motivated,” Edwards told journalists.

YANGON, Myanmar – Floods and landslides triggered by incessant monsoon rains in Myanmar and Bangladesh have killed more than 100 people, officials and reports said Thursday.

At least 46 people died Tuesday in Myanmar ’s northern Rakhine state, according to the state-run Myanma Ahlin newspaper. Rescue workers are pulling residents out of the worst-affected areas and trying to open a key road damaged in the torrents. Bridges in the region have also been washed out.

State television reported Wednesday that 28 of the people were killed when houses built on

mountains collapsed in landslides in Buthidaung, 360 miles (575 kilometers) northwest of Yangon, and 18 others died in Maundaw, south of Buthidaung.

Meanwhile, across the border, Bangladesh recovered three more bodies overnight in the southeastern Cox’s Bazar district, raising the death toll from powerful landslides to 56, said local magistrate Mohammad Jasim Uddin. Rains in the area have now stopped, he said.

Flooding is common in both countries during the monsoon season that typically starts in late May. Cyclone Nargis struck both countries in May 2008, devastating large swaths of Myanmar where it left more than 140,000 people dead or missing.

Air traffic disrupted as storms hit China AFP

BEIJING (AFP) – Hundreds of flights in and out of Beijing were cancelled or delayed on Thursday as thunderstorms wreaked havoc across the Chinese capital, airport authorities said.

Strong downpours, lightning storms and gusting winds hit the city as the local meteorological bureau issued its third storm alert in 24 hours early on Thursday.

Beijing’s Capital Airport said the bad weather forced the cancellation of 314 flights and delayed another 489.

Traffic was also affected by the

summer storms, with huge jams on Beijing highways as commuters headed back to work after a threeday holiday.

Meanwhile, wide areas of southern China have been hit by torrential rains since Sunday, causing floods and landslides that have killed at least 42 people and left 36 others missing, according to state media reports.

The provinces of Fujian and Sichuan, in China’s southeast and southwest respectively, as well as the southern region of Guangxi have been hardest hit, with authorities warning the rain will continue for several days.

President asks ministers to consult him on budget allocations Antara

JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono has reminded cabinet ministers to always consult with him or the vice president about their respective budget allocations.

In his directives before chairing a limited cabinet meeting on Thursday, President Yudhoyono asked the cabinet ministers to consult with him or with Vice President Boediono if they wanted to discuss ministerial budget allocations with the House of Representatives (DPR).

The president was to chair the limited cabinet meeting to discuss the National Social Security System.

On the occasion, the head of state admitted that all ministries wanted to have the highest possible budget allocation but he warned that they also needed to prevent the State Budget (APBN) from becoming overdrawn.

“The minister/state secretary, cabinet secretary, and other government officials should always consult with the finance minister, economic minister, and even with the president

or vice president if they want to discuss budget allocations with the DPR,” President Yudhoyono said.

He said the APBN and regional budget (APBD) should be sustainable and have a healthy posture with the right direction to fund the activities that had to be funded.

“Certainly all parties want to have the highest possible budget allocation but if the percentage is 5 percent and 10 percent, or 140 percent when we add it up, it should really be consulted with the president,” the head of state said.

Indonesia needs Internet blacklist to stop porn: minister Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s communications minister vowed Thursday to issue a decree by the end of the year to “save the young” from pornography on the Internet.

The mainly Muslim country has been scandalised by the recent online release of homemade sex videos involving three popular celebrities, breathing new life into proposals to filter the Internet for pornographic content.

Communications Minister Tifatul Sembiring, chief of the Islamic Prosperous Justice Party, said he would draft a new decree in consultation with lawmakers after an earlier version was shelved due to widespread opposition.

“The porn video ‘allegedly’ consisting of three artists ... has insulted

the nation’s constitution and Pancasila,” he said, referring to the founding national philosophy that enshrines belief in the “one and only God”.

“We have beliefs in the ‘Oneness of God’ and a ‘Fair and Civilized Humanity’ as aspects of Pancasila.

Our teachings have been tainted by the distribution of those videos.”

Citing a 2007 survey showing 97 percent of Indonesian high school students had watched or accessed pornographic websites, the minister said he could no longer stand back and watch while the country was “poisoned”.

His proposed decree, which received the backing of lawmakers on Wednesday, would include electronic filtering of the Web and the creation of a “blacklist” of offensive material that would be monitored by

a special task force.

“There will be a team to observe whether a website contains points from the blacklist. The team will assess whether such websites truly contain pornographic material,” Sembiring said.

“If it does, we’ll ask the website to delete the points included in the list, but we won’t ban the whole website.”

Sembiring also implied a link between Internet pornography and HIVAIDS, and questioned whether state funds used to fight the spread of the disease could not be better spent.

“The country has dispersed 180 billion rupiah (19.6 million dollars) to curb HIV-AIDS. The budget should actually be reduced so the money can be allocated for other things that are beneficial for the country,” he told reporters.

The verdict was announced here Thursday by Mochtar Ritonga, chairman of the panel of High Court judges that had considered Antasari’s appeal.

Antasari’s 18-year jail sentence was passed on him by the South Jakarta District Court last February 11, 2010 after it had found him guilty of involvement in the murder of Nasruddin Zulkarnaen, director of PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran (PRB).

Ritonga said it had been legitimately and convincingly proven that Antasari had made a suggestion leading to Nasruddin’s premeditated murder. Therefore, the High Court jury decided that Antasari should remain in jail.

The jury rejected the claim by Azhar’s lawyers that a short text message (SMS) containing a veiled

threat from Antasari to Nasruddin was a fabrication, saying it was baseless.

“The authenticity of the SMS has been confirmed by some witnesses who had seen it,” Ritonga said.

On the accusation by Azhar’s lawyers that the South Jakarta District Court had ignored the facts revealed during the trial, the High Court jury said the District Court had given the lawyers chances to present witnesses, evidence and replies.

“So there was no violation of the defendant’s rights,” Ritonga said.

Meanwhile, Juniver Girsang, one of Antasari’s defense attorneys, said he and his client would soon discuss what the latter needed to do next, including the possibility of filing an appeal on the High Court ruling with the Supreme Court.

JAKARTA - Indonesia and the European Union will increase communication between their businessmen to boost exports and investment to and from the two parties in five priority sectors.

“We wish to identify opportunities available to increase exports and attract investment,” Indonesian trade minister Mari Elka Pangestu said at the launching of European Union-Indonesia Business Dialogue (EIBD) Forum here on Wednesday.

The forum to be staged in November 2010 is expected to be able to give inputs to the governments of the two parties to overcome problems hindering economic relations.

The forum has been held once before and in connection with it this time the two parties have formed nine working groups, five of them to focus on priority sectors and four others on inter-sectoral affairs.

The five sectors to be discussed are medical and pharmaceutical sectors, textiles, and garment and footwear sectors.

Working groups have also been set up for automotive and machinery sectors, infrastructure and food and beverage sectors.

The inter-sectoral teams meanwhile will discuss physical infrastructure, services, law and regulation as well as urgent issues concerned with growth and trade facilities.

On the occasion the head of the EU delegation for Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, Julian Wilson, said that the forum was very important with regard to hearing voices from Indonesian businessmen wishing to expand their business to Europe or vice versa.

Trade between the two parties has grown stable so far at around US$25 billion a year. Indonesia has so far always enjoyed a surplus with its exports to the region surpassing US$13 billion in value a year.

“We still have a big opportunity to increase our trade,” he said.

The head of the IndonesianFrench Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IFCCI), Alain Pierre Mignon, said Indonesia is a potential country for French companies to invest. So far however French investors have not yet received correct information about the condition in the country.

He said the interest of French businessmen to conduct partnership with Indonesian businessmen is high. In view of that he wished to encourage businessmen from his country to come to the forum so that they would be able to know Indonesia better.

“For the past 80 years we have been successful here. Now however there are more competitors such as from China, Japan and India. May be we need a new business model.

Bali Today Tourism businessmen should support ”Beach and Clean Reef Up” Antara

Denpasar – Badung Marine Businessmen Association or Gahawisri urged all businessmen to support the “Beach & Reef Clean Up” activity in Nusa Dua, Bali. Made Tromat, the head of Gahawisri Badung, said “we urge all people to take part in the activity to clean the coral reefs.”

From the total of 24 water sports business in Benoa area, only 11 companies took part in the activity.

“Most of the companies didn’t take part I the activities. The sea is our main source of business so we must take care of it properly,” Tromat added.

He said that the “Beach & Reef Clean Up” is the action taken by the businessmen in Bali to conserve the environment and develop tourism.

The program is being held every four months so all people must take part in the activity.

“Currently, the condition of coral reefs in Benoa area is quite good and the damage probably 5% from the total coral reefs,” Tromat added.

For that reason, the reefs must be protected and conserved, one of them is by keeping the sea clean. If the coral reefs are damaged, the

tourism industry will suffer the effect of it.

Tromat said that the under water scenery in Tanjung Benoa is very beautiful and many tourists attracted to see it.

“Not only foreigners who like to dive in Benoa but also the domestics tourists. In a month we can receive approximately 600 tourists.

There is great hope that the number will keep increasing especially during the holiday,” he added.

At the beginning of 7th century, a Balinese prince becomes the king of Java, the great Erlangga. His mother, Mahendradatta, was a Javanese princess who ruled Bali with her Balinese husband, Dharmodayana, until the husband, suspecting her of practising evil magic, exiled her to the forest.

When Erlangga’s father died, leaving Mahendradatta as a rangda or a widow, she conspired to use her band of pupils trained in the black arts to destroy Erlangga’s kingdom.

Her chief grudge against Erlangga because of fancied insults to her beautiful daughter, Ratna Menggali – the noblemen of Daha had refused her in marriage for fear of her mother’s evil reputation.

Calonarang (Erlangga’s mother who practising evil magic) went with her pupils to the cemetery and they prayed and danced in honour of Begawati, the deity of black magic, to help them destroy Daha.

The goddes appeared and danced with them, granting her permission, warning the witch, however, to preserve the center of the

kingdom untouched. The witches danced at the crossroads and soon people fell in great numbers.

Discovering the cause of the epidemic, Erlangga ordered his soldiers to go and kill the witch. They stole into her house while she slept and stabbed her in the heart , but Calonarang awoke unhurt and consumed the daring soldiers with her own fire. The witch went once more into the cemetery and danced with her pupils, dug out corpses, cutting them into pieces, eating the members, drinking the blood, and wearing the entrails as necklaces.

Begawati appeared again and joined in the bloody banquet, but warned Calonarang to be careful. The witches danced once more at the crossroads and the dreadful epidemic ravaged the land, the vassals of Erlangga died before they could even bury the corpses they bore to the cemeteries.

The desperate king sent for Mpu Bharada, the holy man from Lemah Tulis, the only living being who could vanquish the witch. Mpu Bharada planned his campaign carefully. He sent Bahula, his young as-

sistant, to ask for the witch daughter’s in marriage. Highly flattered, the mother gave her consent and after a happy and passionate honeymoon, Bahula learned from his wife the secret of Calonarang’s power. The possession of a little magic book which he stole and turned over to his master. The holy man copied it and had it returned before the disappearance could be noticed. The book was a manual of righteousness and had to be read backwards. The holy man was then able to restore life to those victims whose bodies had not yet decayed.

Armed with the new knowledge, he accused the witch of her crimes, but she challenged him by setting an enormous Banyan tree on fire by a single look of her fiery eyes.

Bharada foiled the enraged witch by restoring the tree, and she turned her fire against the holy man. Unmoved, he killed her with one of her own mantras, but she died in her monstrous form and Bharada, to absolve her of her crimes and enable her to atone for them, revived her, gave her human appearance, and then killed her again. Similarly, beauty also can toss the imagination, soothe the mind and draw people to get near. Bali has many sources of that beauty offering the charm of nature, culture or adventure.

By maintaining traditions inspired by Hinduism, Balinese people go on running in harmony with the time. In other words, they do not feel inferior because of inheriting those traditions. Beauty in the form of various dance movements has been introduced since early ages. On seeing a dance staged, a toddler may watch it attentively or its fingers move and move as if imitating the movement of the dance.

Virtually all customary villages in Bali have gamelan troupe. This troupe plays important role in expressing their entertainment arts and accompanying every ritual activity.

This existence gives opportunity to villagers from child to adult to express their artistic talent especially in dance, drama and gamelan arts.

Young girls under twelve or elementary school age have a chance to participate in performing Rejang Dance.

By wearing white and yellow costumes and floral decoration on head, they dance beautifully accompanied by gamelan music. Rejang Dance is one of the sacred dances performed in relation to the organization of

temple anniversary or odalan. Other than putting a basic love to their tradition, they also show devotional service or ngatur ayah through the arts.

When they grow older, right on entering secondary school, they join customary village youth club or Sekaa Taruna. Here, with their male friends and their brothers and sisters start to learn about organization.

Many things can be learned through this organization. MADRID - The head of the International Monetary Fund is to visit Spain amid reports Madrid is seeking a bailout while the government bit the bullet and approved crucial reforms of its rigid job market Wednesday.

The cabinet agreed the sweeping labour reforms, deemed essential for reviving the economy and fending off a Greek-style debt crisis, despite a union call for a general strike against them.

The reforms — which make it easier and cheaper for firms to fire workers — must still be voted on by parliament, where the government is seven seats short of a majority.

The assembly last month passed a 15-billion-euro (18.4-billion-dollar) government austerity package, which includes cuts in public sector wages — but by just one vote.

Spain plunged into its worst recession in decades at the end of 2008 following the collapse of a decade-long property boom and only returned to tepid growth this year.

The crisis has sent the unemployment rate soaring to more than 20 percent, the highest in the European Union after Latvia.

The high unemployment has in turn caused government spending on jobless benefits to skyrocket. That has pushed Spain’s public deficit to 11.2 percent of gross domestic product last year, the third highest in the eurozone after Greece and Ireland.

Spanish business daily El Economista said Wednesday the IMF, the European Union and the US Treasury had drawn up a rescue plan for Spain including a credit line of between 200 and 250 billion euros. The plan would use money from a special-purpose fund worth up to 500 billion euros put in place last month to help eurozone nations that run into Greek-style debt problems, it added.

But the IMF, the European Commission and the Spanish government have denied any bailout is in the works. Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the eurogroup of finance ministers, also said Wednesday he had seen no indication “that Spain will be in a position where it has to ask” for the emergency funds.

But the speculation was fueled when IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn announced he would hold talks with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in Madrid on Friday. Strauss-Kahn, stressing it would be a “working visit,” again dismissed the talk of a bailout for Spain.

“I go to all the European countries. I am in France (today) — are there such rumours about France?” he told AFP. The IMF warned last month that Spain’s

economy needed “far-reaching and comprehensive reforms” of its rigid labour market and banking sector if it was to solve its huge debt and deficit problems.

Bank of Spain governor Miguel Fernandez Ordonez meanwhile also called for rapid implementation of restructuring measures, including those to “improve the competitiveness of the Spanish economy”. The government pushed ahead with its own version of the labour market reforms after talks with the unions and employers collapsed last week.

Spain’s two largest unions, the CCOO and the UGT, which represent over two million workers, on Tuesday called for a general strike on September 29 to protest the plan.

Workers on full contracts are currently entitled to severance pay of as much as 45 days per year worked, one of the highest levels in Europe. Under the government reform, this would be reduced to 33 days for some contracts.

Many economists blame the high jobless rate on the high cost of firing workers in Spain, which makes employers reluctant to hire staff and encourages the use of temporary contracts that have few benefits and rights.

But some analysts said the latest plan did not go far enough.

“We remain unconvinced that the reform is decisive enough, in particular regarding flexibility at the company level,” said Javier Perez de Azpillaga of Goldman Sachs ECS Global ECS European Research.

The government has also encouraged the rapid consolidation of the country’s 45 regional savings banks to weather the uncertain economic outlook sparked by the collapse of the property sector.

But public finances could be further strained after the Bank of Spain revealed Wednesday that these regional banks have requested around 11 billion euros from a state restructuring fund to carry out merger plans. Finnish deputy finance minister Jyrki Katainen meanwhile expressed concern that a minority of poorly performing banks might effect the credibility of better run European banks — and that this might be a problem in Spain.

“There are some rumors that the banks are in bad shape.” But he added: “The government says it is willing to have more transparent stress test and publish the results.”

LONDON - Britain has unveiled sweeping changes to its system of financial regulation, handing more power to the Bank of England (BoE) and abolishing the framework set up by the last government.

George Osborne, the new Conservative finance minister, said in a speech late Wednesday that the BoE would get powers to regulate individual financial firms, in addition to its remit to monitor the overall health of the economy.

The Financial Services Authority (FSA), which regulates the City of London but came in for heavy criticism for its failure to foresee the near-collapse of Britain’s banking system, would be abolished.

Some of its responsibilities would be handed to the Bank of England, while others would be injected into new organisations.

The so-called “tripartite” system — which shares responsibility for regulation between the BoE, the FSA and the finance ministry — would be ended, said the chancellor. It was set up by the previous Labour administration.

Osborne said the financial crisis, which plunged Britain into its worst recession since the 1930s, showed powers to monitor both individual firms and the general state of the economy needed to be centralised at the BoE. “Because central banks are the lenders of last resort, the experience of the crisis has also shown that they need to be familiar with every aspect of the institutions that they may have to support,” he said.

“So they must also be responsible for dayto-day microprudential regulation as well.”

Giving the speech in central London, he added the proposals amounted to “a new system of regulation that learns the lessons of the greatest banking crisis in our lifetime.”

Osborne revealed the shake-up at his first Mansion House speech, an annual address to business leaders that is one of the most highprofile in the finance minister’s calendar.

ers at the Bank of England was aimed at better coordinating responses to future crises, said the minister.

“When the crunch came, no one knew who was in charge,” he said.

The Conservatives had vowed to overhaul regulation of the financial system when they were fighting to win power from Labour at the May 6 elections.

But an inconclusive result which forced them into a coalition government with the smaller Liberal Democrat party had cast doubt on whether the Tories would get to push through all the reforms they had hoped.

Osborne, a cabinet minister in the new government headed by Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, detailed the break-up of the FSA. The part that monitors financial institutions would become a “prudential regulator” and would operate as a subsidiary of the Bank of England.

Some of the FSA’s powers would be injected into a separate consumer protection and markets authority, while others would be put into an agency for fighting economic crime.

The chief executive of the FSA, Hector Sants, would stay on to oversee the transition which would be completed in 2012, said the chancellor.

Bank of England governor Mervyn King welcomed the reforms, saying the previous setup at the FSA had not been effective.

“In a crisis, decisions must be made quickly and decisively and the central bank, working with government which is always responsible for any use of public money, needs to be in charge,” he said.

“That was one of our painful lessons.”

Osborne also confirmed plans for a tax on banks and said the coalition would “demand further restraint on pay and bonuses.”

The government would also establish an independent commission to study whether big banks should be broken up and their investment and retail arms separated, said the chancellor.

SALT LAKE CITY – The independent attorney appointed to oversee the property and cremation of late actor Gary Coleman said Wednesday there will be no funeral services for the former child TV star. A Utah judge on Monday named Robert Jeffs the special administrator of Coleman’s estate after a dispute between the “Diff’rent Strokes” star’s ex-wife and ex-girlfriend.

Jeffs told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Coleman’s 2005 will specifies that there should be no funeral services.

Coleman died May 28 after suffering a brain hemorrhage at his home in Santaquin, 55 miles south of Salt Lake City. The judge ordered that Coleman’s remains be cremated no sooner than Wednesday afternoon.

“The judge hasn’t entered the order granting me authority as spe-

cial administrator,” Jeffs said.

“That’s just a technicality; (I) need a formalized order.”

Jeffs said even if the order were entered Wednesday, it was unlikely Coleman would be cremated the same day. Jeffs has said Coleman’s ashes and property will be securely stored until a final determination is made on an estate executor. It’s a decision Jeffs said could take months.

Coleman said in a 1999 will that he wanted to be remembered in a wake conducted by people who had no financial ties to him and “can look each other in the eyes and say they really cared personally for Gary Coleman.” He also wanted none of the media that followed Coleman’s legal, financial, health and marriage troubles through his adult life to be allowed to attend.

“I direct my personal representative to permit no members of the press to be present at my wake or funeral,” Coleman stated.

That will named Dion Mial, one of Coleman’s friends and former managers, who on Monday withdrew his petition to be named as the special administrator of Coleman’s estate. Mial’s attorney said the 2005 will that names exgirlfriend Anna Gray as administrator takes precedence because it is more recent.

Gray and Coleman’s ex-wife, Shannon Price, both contend they are the lawful administrators of Coleman’s estate. Price is named in a 2007 handwritten note by Coleman that names her as the sole heir.

Coleman starred for eight seasons on the sitcom “Diff ’rent Strokes,” starting in 1978. The tiny 10-year-old’s “Whachu talkin’ ‘bout?” became a catch phrase in the show about two African-American brothers adopted by a wealthy white man. Coleman played Arnold Jackson, the younger of the two brothers.

MUMBAI – Columbian pop queen Shakira, the star of the World Cup song “Waka Waka,” is to sing for a Bollywood film in the latest move by a global star to target the Indian market, a music director said Thursday.

Shakira, whose catchy Africa-themed football anthem has had a mixed critical reception, is to follow in the footsteps of fellow pop diva Kylie Minogue who made a move into Bollywood last year.

The song will be composed by a team of brothers known as Salim-Sulaiman, who collaborated with South African singers to record “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” which is based on a traditional African soldiers’ song.

“We are hoping to start recording next month,” Salim Merchant told AFP, declining to reveal the name of the movie in which Shakira’s song will appear.

“There will be a lot of Latin influence in the song,” Salim added.

It is commom practice in Bollywood for music companies to pre-record songs to be used later for movie soundtracks.

Indian actors or actresses then lip-sync the songs during the film.

Salim and Sulaiman are up and coming music directors who have scored hits with Bollywood movies like “Kurbaan” (Sacrifice) and “Chak De India” (Come on, India).

Kylie Minogue teamed up with India’s double-Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman for a song for an underwater Bollywood extravaganza “Blue”. US R&B and rap stars Akon and Snoop Dogg have also both worked in Bollywood.

WASHINGTON – A pink pill designed to boost sex drive in women — the latest attempt by the drug industry to find a female equivalent to Viagra — fell short in two studies, federal health regulators said Wednesday.

The Food and Drug Administration is considering Boehringer Ingelheim’s drug flibanserin for premenopausal women who report a lack of sexual desire, a market that drugmakers have been targeting for more than a decade since the blockbuster success of Viagra in men.

The search for so-called “female Viagra,” has proved elusive though, with many drugs abandoned after showing lackluster results.

On Friday the FDA will ask a panel of experts to weigh in on the safety and effectiveness of Boehringer’s drug. The agency is

not required to follow the group’s advice, though it often does.

In its review posted online, the FDA said two Boehringer studies failed to show a significant increase in sexual desire, as recorded by women in a daily journal. Women taking the drug reported slightly more sexually satisfying experiences, but FDA said that was not the primary measure of the study.

“The division wanted to see that an effect of treatment is an overall increase in sexual desire regardless of whether a sexual event occurred or not,” states the FDA review.

The FDA also noted increased side effects like depression, fainting and dizziness seen among women taking the pink pill.

The drug, which is related to the antidepressant family, affects serotonin and several other brain chemicals, though it’s not clear how that increases sex drive.

“We don’t know specifically what the exact mechanism of action is but we believe it acts on brain chemicals that have a role in human sexual response,” said Dr. Peter Piliero, executive director for Boehringer’s U.S. medical affairs.

Since the launch of Viagra in 1998, more than two dozen experimental therapies have been studied for so-called “female sexual dysfunction,” a market which some analysts estimate at $2 billion.

NEW YORK – Apple Inc. said Wednesday that it and its phone company partners took orders for more than 600,000 iPhone 4s in one day, the highest number it’s ever seen. The companies stopped taking orders for shipment by the June 24 launch day in the U.S. The crush of orders sets the scene for long lines and potential chaos at stores when the next version of the iPhone is released. Judging by previous years, shortages could last through the summer.

Apple and its partners started taking orders for the iPhone 4 on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, AT&T Inc., the exclusive carrier in the U.S., had stopped taking orders, saying it had to focus on fulfilling orders already received.

At midday Wednesday, Apple was accepting orders only for black models, and would only guarantee shipment by July 2. The white model was unavailable for order.

Dallas-based AT&T said it received 10 times as many prelaunch orders on the first day for the new iPhone model as it did for the previous model last year.

AT&T also said it logged more than 13 million visits to a Web page

where current customers can check if they’re eligible for a subsidized upgrade to the new phone. That number was three times higher than the previous record for upgrade checks.

The price of the phone starts at $199. Customers who aren’t eligible for upgrades will pay $200 more. Last year, Apple sold more than 1 million units of the new model, the 3GS, in the first three days. It was the most successful debut for a smart phone yet, and Apple struggled to keep it in stock for months.

The iPhone 4 will feature a higher-resolution screen, longer battery life, dual cameras and a thinner design than last year’s model.

Tuesday’s ordering was marred by two major problems: Buyers reported problems registering their orders and an apparent glitch in AT&T’s website was steering some customers into strangers’ accounts.

Lines formed in stores as clerks tried to get orders into their systems.

“Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties,” Apple said in a statement Wednesday.

Marine scientists studying the effects of the BP disaster are seeing some strange phenomena. Fish and other wildlife seem to be fleeing the oil out in the Gulf and clustering in cleaner waters along the coast in a trend that some researchers see as a

potentially troubling sign.

The animals’ presence close to shore means their usual habitat is badly polluted, and the crowding could result in mass die-offs as fish run out of oxygen. Also, the animals could easily be devoured by predators.

“A parallel would be: Why are the wildlife running to the edge of a forest on fire? There will be a lot of fish, sharks, turtles trying to get out of this water they detect is not suitable,” said Larry Crowder, a Duke University marine biologist.

The nearly two-month-old spill has created an environmental catastrophe unparalleled in U.S. history as tens

of millions of gallons of oil have spewed into the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem. Scientists are seeing some unusual things as they try to understand the effects on thousands of species of marine life.

Day by day, scientists in boats tally up dead birds, sea turtles and other animals, but the toll is surprisingly small given the size of the disaster. The latest figures show that 783 birds, 353 turtles and 41 mammals have died — numbers that pale in comparison to what happened after the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska in 1989, when 250,000 birds and 2,800 otters are believed to have died.

Spain loses to Switzerland, Chile beats Honduras Associated Press Writer

JOHANNESBURG – Spain’s potent attack couldn’t score a goal. South Africa fell desperately close to elimination. Chile did something for the first time in 48 years. It was a wild Wednesday at the World Cup. Spain’s 10 loss to Switzerland ended a 12match winning streak for the European Champions, who have fallen only twice in 50 games, both of them in South Africa. The United States beat the Spaniards 2-0 in the Confederations Cup a year ago.

Diego Forlan scored twice, the first multigoal game by a player this year, and Uruguay defeated South Africa 30. Bafana Bafana must be France in its last first-round game or it will become the first host country not to advance in a World Cup. Chile earned its first victory in a World Cup in exactly 48 years by beating Honduras 10.

“To be fair, I’m not used to scoring goals, so I was a bit surprised,” Fernandes said. “It was a bit of luck.” Probably was, considering Spain had 24 shots and the Swiss managed eight.

“Today wasn’t our day,” Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. “We have two games ahead of us. We have to find a way to win them.”

Spain dominated possession and created attack after attack in Durban, but the stifling Swiss defense manage to withstand it all and record Switzerland’s first win over the Spaniards.The closest Spain came to scoring was in the 72nd minute when Xabi Alonso’s hit the cross bar.

Switzerland was knocked out of the last World Cup on penalties by Ukraine in the round of 16 without conceding a goal in the tournament.

The Swiss have now gone 490 minutes without conceding a World Cup goal.

High-scoring Forlan, who helped Atletico Madrid win the Europa League, connected on a deflected 25-yard shot in the 24th minute and converted a penalty kick in the 80th to give Uruguay its first

World Cup victory since a group game at the 1990 competition.

“Obviously, as a forward I like to score goals, but the important thing is to win,” Forlan said. “The team is good. We also played well against France. We’re very solid.”

Alvaro Pereira added the third score in injury time.

“We are convinced that we can win the World Cup,” coach Oscar Tabarez said. “We don’t have a lot of room to maneuver. We have to play very well each time. Winning this victory over the home team, the national squad, with all the fans behind them, this was not easy.”

Uruguay has four points from two games in Group A, while South Africa has one and needs to beat France on Tuesday to have any chance to stay in the competition.

South Africa goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was sent off by referee Massimo Busacca for giving away the penalty. South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira called Busacca “the worst referee in this competition so far.”

Bryant welcomes challenge in Lakers-Celtics Game 7 Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES – Kobe Bryant yawned when he leaned back on the Los Angeles Lakers’ bench to watch his teammates running through their final practice of the season.

That cool outer demeanor revealed none of the urgency running through Bryant’s head. He knows the singular stakes when the Lakers host the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the NBA finals Thursday night, and he isn’t afraid to raise them even higher.

“I’ve said the whole season, (if) you don’t win a championship, it’s a failure,” said Bryant, who hopes to have his hand full with a fifth championship ring. “It’s as simple as that.”

Nine months of preparation and eight weeks of postseason play for the NBA’s two most decorated franchises will culminate in one pressure-packed game at Staples Center. Such showdowns once occurred regularly in the finals, including four previous trips to Game 7 for these teams, but this is the finals’ first Game 7 since 2005 and

just the third in 22 years.

It’s a dream scenario for kids playing hoops in their driveway. It’s a crucible of history both for Bryant’s Lakers and the Celtics’ veteran core. It’s also simply an incredibly cool experience, according to the players who are mentally able to savor it.

“I just love the pressure,” said Paul Pierce, who leads the Celtics with 18 points per game. “I love the fact that I get to play against the Los Angeles Lakers in a Game 7 on the road. I love the fact that if I don’t win multiple championships that I probably won’t be mentioned amongst the other guys in Celtic history that have done it before. That type of stuff motivates me. That’s what the challenge is for me, every time I put on this Celtic uniform.”

The rivalry’s history intermingles with the drama in Game 7. The defending champion Lakers are going for their 16th banner, while Boston is playing for its unprecedented 18th title in the NBA’s two most successful franchises’ second finals meeting in three years.

Exactly two years to the day after the Celtics ended the 2008 finals with perhaps the most frustrating loss of Bryant’s career, he has the ultimate chance to make things right. “(When) I look back, years from now, or even when I was a kid, (if) you’d talk about being in this situation, I’d be really excited,” said Bryant, the series’ leading scorer with 29.5 points per game. “But when I’m in the moment right now, I’ve got to play.

I’ve got to focus on that. I can’t focus on the hype about it.”

Stosur battles as Clijsters cruises in Eastbourne Agence France Presse

EASTBOURNE – French Open finalist Samantha Stosur reached the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne International Wednesday after a struggling comeback win over Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

It took fifth seed Kim Clijsters just 38 minutes to administer a 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Czech Lucie Safarova as the former world number one Belgian plays for the first time in seven weeks after a foot injury.

The third seeded Stosur from Australia went down a break to the Slovak who quickly won the first set at Devonshire Park, with Stosur forced to battle to secure her place in the last eight at the last tune-up event prior to Wimbledon.

“Daniela is a good player and we’ve had some close matches,” said the winner. “(Windy) conditions were not easy today, it was tough to play

your best. But we still had a good quality match.

“I made the semis here a few years ago and from then on grass started to feel good to me.

The more matches I get on it, the better I feel.

“In my last two matches I’ve really been playing well and I’ve felt at my best. I hope I can play even better considering the year I’ve had.”

Stosur said that she overcame challenges in the second set from low bounces and wind.

“They can leave you frustrated but I didn’t dwell on it. To turn the match around after the second set shows that I know what I have to do.”

Stosur, still adjusting her game from clay to grass this week, came through with 13 aces to overcome Hantuchova, whom she has now beaten in their last four meetings following a loss in 2003.

Stosur has reached the quarters or better at her last six events and will be aiming Thursday to repeat her 2008 semi-final showing on the English south coast.

Mandela attends great-granddaughter’s funeral Associated Press Writer

JOHANNESBURG – A somber and frail Nelson Mandela attended the funeral Thursday for his 13-year-old great-granddaughter, who was killed in a car crash after the World Cup’s opening concert, and gloom descended over South Africa with its team at risk of being bounced out of the tournament.

The 92-year-old anti-apartheid icon emerged stiffly from a car and leaned on a walking stick. He was ferried in a golf cart to the brick chapel of the Johannesburg private school Zenani Mandela had attended and took a front pew. Mandela’s face was somber. A corsage of pink roses was pinned to the lapel of his black coat.

Police say a close family friend who was driving the car that crashed the night of June 10 could be charged with drunk driving and homicide. Zenani was a member of the choir, marimba club and drum corps of St. Stithians College where her funeral was held, and wanted to be a plastic surgeon.

After Zenani died when the car she in crashed on a highway, Mandela decided not to attend the tournament’s opening ceremony and first game as had been planned.

Mandela’s public appearances are increasingly rare.

A private burial was held earlier Thursday. The public had been welcomed to the chapel service, and several hundred people attended, including an overflow crowd in a tent outside. Mandela was accompanied by his wife, Graca Machel. Also present was his ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela,

who is Zenani’s great-grandmother.

Zenani’s classmates in school blazers and other mourners each held a single white rose.

They stood to sing “Amazing Grace” as the funeral began before a montage of family portraits, including one of Zenani hugging Mandela, was projected on a screen as a recording of “Lean on Me” played.

In the build-up to the Canadian Grand Prix, Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn reckoned that his parent road car company was ‘on the limit’ in terms of working with other teams, and he urged caution before a decision was taken to add another outfit to the roster.

Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug has echoed Brawn’s comments and thinks that, with the works team likely to run KERS next season, it may have too much to work on for it to be able to add another customer.

“We have probably KERS next year, so we need to look at our capacities,” said Haug. “It definitely would be very difficult for us to supply a fourth team - but no final decision is taken yet.

“We have cut the workforce on our engines, and we also need to prepare in a while for 2013 when there will be new rules. So probably the best decision is to stick with three teams.

“That is not the final decision taken, but probably we will stay as we are.” Although Red Bull Racing has enjoyed great success with Renault, team principal Christian Horner said recently that his team’s decision on which power-unit to use in 2011 could well rest on engine parity parameters laid down by the FIA.

Hayden: Lack of wins down to riders NICKY Hayden is adamant that this year’s Ducati GP10 is capable of winning races against Yamaha and Honda.

Neither Hayden nor Casey Stoner have finished on the podium so far this season, but the American insists that the Ducati will be a winner when the riders get the best out of it. Stoner crashed out of the lead in both Qatar and France.

“We just haven’t put it together,” Hayden said. “In a couple of the races Casey crashed out of, he had a good shot to win. I believe our bike is good enough to win and even Casey will say our bike is capable of winning races this year.

“It’s not the bike keeping us from it. Sure, we can improve it, and it’s not the dominant bike, but our package is strong. I think we have the potential.” For now, Hayden is just aiming for a podium finish at Silverstone this weekend.

“The podium is the next step for us,” he added. “Without Valentino [Rossi], you are one step closer. I hate to say it like that, but it’s true. But there are plenty of guys out there that are going to be hard to beat and are thinking the same thing.

“I think it could be a little bit more wide open, but it’s the same guys that are going to be near the front. It’s a big challenge and I like it a lot. I wish we went to more new tracks.”
