BANGKOK – Thai troops with assault rifles entered Bangkok’s business district Monday to deter a protest march and protect a key bank with razor wire barricades, while anti-government demonstrators stockpiled paving stones nearby in the tense capital.

A leader of the “Red Shirt” protesters, thousands of mostly rural demonstrators camped out in the

capital since March 12 to demand the dissolution of Parliament, accused the troops of preparing the area to be “a killing field.”

The government has declared Silom Road, a thoroughfare studded with bank headquarters and office buildings, off-limits to the protesters who have camped in the capital’s main shopping district nearby for weeks in their bid to oust Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and hold new elections.

Protest leaders had called for a

mass rally Tuesday, with some indicating it may be staged in the business district, raising concerns of more clashes after savage fighting a week ago killed 25 people. However, the protesters have often changed their plans to keep security forces off-guard, and early Monday they appeared poised to launch their march a day earlier than planned.

Troops initially moved in to block entry to Silom, resulting in a tense face-off. The troops later

pulled back almost half its 2.5-kilometer (1.5-mile) length to protect a key target of the protesters, the headquarters of the Bangkok Bank which was barricaded by razor wire.

Many of the demonstrators also pulled back, but braced for battle.

Protesters piled rudimentary weapons behind razor wire at the intersection_ bricks pulled from the area’s brick-lined pavements and stacks of bamboo rods.

Bali News Sky Garden attacked by civilians,

Officer of mobile brigade warns by shoot, perpetrators flee Denpasar (Bali Post)

Sky Garden Discotheque located on Jalan Legian, Kuta, Badung, again became an arena of commotion. A group of youths who alleged to be civilians assaulted and did vandalism for two times, namely last Saturday (Apr 17) and Sunday (Apr 18) early in the morning. In that attack, members of the Mobile Brigade of Bali Police had also warned by shots into the air. As a result, tens of perpetrators consisting of burly men ran helter-skelter.

A number of existing facilities in the discotheque was said to be damaged. One of them was the sound system installed at the scene. Not only that, a local security officer named Ferdi Hale was also reported to suffer from slashing injury, but not so serious. However, the case had been reported to police station. ?Police are still investigating the case further while pursuing the perpetrators,? said one of the police sources rejecting to mention his name.

According to available information, the assault case happened twice.

First, the attack was carried out by at least 10 people suspected to be civilians, last Saturday (Apr 17) at 00:30 am Local Time. They came to the scene and clashed with local security officers. The existence of a commotion at the scene made the members of Mobile Brigade of Bali Police who were on guard at the scene issued warning shots. ?There were about five shots fired by the members,? the

source said.

The shots made the perpetrators fled helter-skelter. Therefore, no greater commotion occurred. However, in the next morning, a commotion broke out again. A group of civilians who alleged to belong to the same perpetrators attacked to the scene again. On the second attack, they came in four. However, they carried sharp weapons and used a veil. ?The second attack took place last Sunday (Apr 18) 03:00 am,? he explained.

They went into the discotheque right away and made an attack and vandalism. Sound system was destroyed. Again, the perpetrators triggered the members of Mobile Brigade give warning shoots. ?Well, at this time police fired the warning shots for three times. Previously, the wounded security officer (Ferdi Hale-ed) was alleged to have been attacked at the entrance.

Therefore, before the perpetrators entered, the guard had time to try banning them,? he explained.

What was the motive of the incident? There were two versions developed in the field related to the motive.

First, the attack was allegedly due to management reshuffle at Sky Garden Discotheque. Given, other than management reshuffle, there was also some security officers discharged.

Meanwhile, the second version mentioned the attack was kindled by the rejection where a friend of local security officer was not allowed to enter.

Meanwhile, other information said the attack had been anticipated by police. Since the first incident, police have added the forces to keep watch at the scene. However, because it was raining heavily and the police took shelter, then the perpetrators took advantage the moment to attack for the second time.

At the same time, Chief of Denpasar Metro Police I Gede Alit Widana was not willing to give more comments related to the incident. (kmb21)

Hot smokes emanate from the ground, Tajun residents turn restless Singaraja (Bali Post)

Residents of Bayad Hamlet, Tajun Village, Kubutambahan Subdistrict, last Sunday (Apr 18) morning turned restless. Because, a local resident encountered hot smokes emanating from the ground located in the vicinity of Bukit Pucak Sinunggal Temple.

The smokes were first encountered by Made Sutrawan, a resident of Bayad Hamlet who contracted the land owned by Ketut Kamiarsa. On the land, the witness used to make statues from lava stones available at the area. While working at around 07:00 am Local Time on last Sun-

day, Sutrawan saw the smokes rising from the earth. At the beginning, he thought the white smokes were of cigarette. After investigated further, in fact the smokes emerged from the earth. Sutrawan was very curious so he dug at the location until the depth of fifty centimeters. In fact, the deeper he dug, the bigger the smokes emanating. More strangely, the deeper he dug the hotter the smokes were.

The emanating smokes from the ground were translucent. They were odorless but hot. Local residents claimed to have boiled a chicken egg in a container above the smokes. As a result, the chicken egg in the water

was cooked. Seeing the incident, the local residents reported it to the Head of Kubutambahan subdistrict, Made Suyasa, who is also a figure of Tajun Village.

Made Suyasa directly came down to the location to see the natural phenomenon as well as to assuage the unrest of residents. At the location, Suyasa recited a carol and lead the residents to pray so that they continue to survive without any interference or whatsoever. Although considered as an ordinary natural event, Suyasa kept on asking local residents to make an exorcism rite in the form of Manca Sata. (kmb15)

Census officers asked to avoid double counting Denpasar (Bali Post)

Population census (SP) conducted by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in each region, especially in Bali had been started by the field officers. In fact, the national population census should be begun in May 2010. Since its implementation precedes the national schedule, the census officers will be asked to avoid the double counting. Not only that, the officers must also ensure that all citizens living in Bali had already been recorded accordingly.

This matter was confirmed by the Head of BPS of the RI Dr. Rusman Heriawan before a number of census officers in Denpasar, last Sunday (Apr 18). Rusman Heriawan along with a number of his staff had the opportunity to review and monitor the implementation of census at Lebah Hamlet, Sumertha Village, East Denpasar.

Rusman Heriawan admitted the concern related to the existence of data distinction between the data obtained from the census and data available at Civil Registration Office in each region because the mechanisms used by the agencies and offices in each region was slightly different. BPS collected the data of residents based on the existence of people at a particular place.

Meanwhile, the service of each region had the data based on demographic administration, such as ID

cards. ?BPS recorded the number of population based on de facto where the residents lives everyday at particular location without considering whether they had ID card or not,? he said.

However, such differences could be minimized by using the census data obtained the activity altogether.

Moreover, the enumeration of the existence of residents through population census was based on the existence of people living in one area. ?This census is conducted with a great care, so that it could avoid any double counting or residents that were not enumerated at all,? said Rusman Heriawan last Sunday.

It turned important, he said, in order to have the same reference of demographic data. When the results of the census were shared, there was no difference in terms of numbers.

It was a kind of comprehensive effort to address the problem.

Meanwhile, the Head of BPS Denpasar, Wayan Suta, admitted to avoid double counting, his party had divided each hamlet into a number of census blocks. Through these systems, his party had confidence the officers would not be doing double counting or no residents would be left behind. However, his party admitted some officers would come again and again, when the visited the house showed no occupants. (kmb12)

Due to piles, a man hangs himself in the garden Tabanan (Bali Post)

Lately, there were more and more Tabanan residents taking a shortcut to end their life by hanging himself.

Due to his piles disease never got recovered, I Ketut Noji, 70, a resident of Tanah Sari Hamlet, Pajahan Village, Pupuan, ended his life by hanging himself. He was found hanging in a hut located in the middle of a garden he cultivated, last Saturday (Apr 17).

Initially, there were no family members suspecting the victim would do such reckless action. Local residents found the body of victim at about 2:00 pm Local Time.

He with a rigid body was suspended on the hut?s rafter by means of green plastic rope. At that time, the situation was truly quiet and the victim hung himself at the garden belonging to Sukadana from

Bantiran. Allegedly, the victim was under severe depression because the piles he suffered did not recover.

Residents who found the body of the victim immediately reported the case to Pupuan Police. Later on, police together with medical officer of Community Health Center directly came down to the crime scene for examining the condition of the victim.

Chief of Pupuan Police S. Irianto, last Sunday (Apr 18), said that according to the examination of the doctor, it was found no signs of violence in the victim?s body. Allegedly, the victim was purely hanged himself. Given, the victim was found with the tongue protruding, releasing semen and feces as well. On that account, he was declared to have committed a suicide by hanging himself. (kmb14)

A policeman stabbed by crazy man

Bad weather in Bali Strait, harbor authority increases the awareness

Initially he would like to lend a hand, but bad luck approached Ketut Budarga, 46, a resident of Gianyar. Budarga is a policeman on duty at the Blahbatuh Police, Gianyar. He had to be treated at Sanglah Hospital after his right thigh was stabbed by a madman.

the patient of mental disorder, without being realized he seemed to carry a knife and plunged it directly toward Budarga and his friend.

Budarga and his friend were injured and rushed to hospital due to bleeding to Gianyar Hospital, while Budarga was referred to Sanglah Hospital.

Head of Trauma Centre of Sanglah Hospital, Kuning Atmadjaya, said the patient was operated at around 03:00 am. There were several small muscles and blood vessels cut off, but not too serious, said Kuning. Until last Sunday, Budarga was still being treated at Sanglah Hospital. (san)

Such apprehensiveness and self-criticism soared out in the tourism panel entitled ?How to Manage Tourism Benefiting Bali (Nature, Culture and Balinese Human)? was co-organized by Bali Travel News and International Bali Post at Griya Santrian, Sanur, last Saturday (Apr 17). The discussion lasting for some two hours featured the speakers such as Gusti Kade Sutawa from Kuta Executive Club, Chairman of the Society of the Indonesian Professional Convention Organizers (SIPCO) Putu Juarez R Putra, Chairman of the Society of Tri Hita Karana Gede Suarsa and a tourism practitioner IB Surakusuma. The four resource persons described a variety of ideas and constructive solutions in order to maintain the continuity of Bali tourism survival without having outraged the natural and cultural environment of Bali believed

as the main pillar of the triumph of tourism in Bali.

IB Surakusuma asserted the beautiful nature and culture of Bali as well as a decent characteristic denoted a good combined tourist attraction package making Bali develop to become a world?s favorite tourist destination. Since tourism had a very strong influence in increasing the Bali?s economy, the tourism was continuously driven to grow in harmony with a variety of physical development of tourism facilities.

If physical development was not well controlled, the natural environment of Bali would be exploited indiscriminately.

Genuinely the Tri Hita Karana conception guiding the Balinese to become wise people has no longer been obeyed. Like mushroom growing in the rainy season, the hotels and tourism facilities appeared in numbers everywhere without paying attention to luanteben (upper-lower course) conception that previously strictly upheld by humans in Bali. ?Just for the sake of pursuing the blessings of tourism, people have a tendency to behave permissively. In order to realize this commitment, of course, it was required a regulatory instruments enforced and implemented consistently and responsibly. ?If the nature, culture and human characteristics of Bali have gone, then Bali is not more than Singapore. Destination management touted ever was in the right direction and very urgent to be implemented. Therefore, it no longer dwells at the level of discourse,? he asserted.

Similar opinion was expressed

by Gusti Kade Sutawa from Kuta Executive Club. In order to save the nature, culture and people of Bali integrally against the developing tourism undermining wildly, this General Manager of Puri Saron hotel urged that the Tri Hita Karana concept should be implemented consistently and consequently. In addition, Bali should have an agency or association caring and working in real terms for the rescue of Bali. ?Ideally, there is an agency or competent parties having the power to control this,? he stated firmly. Recently, bad weather often occurred in the Bali Strait, like the heavy rains accompanied by strong winds. Even, on last Saturday (Apr 17) afternoon, the weather was very bad. Such condition made Gilimanuk Harbor Authority increased discernment and instructed all helmsmen to be vigilant.

Similarly, his party kept an eye on every movement of the ship and continued to coordinate with the captain. According to him, his party made a weather report of the Bali Straits to the captain. Mr. X dies at Seseh Beach After the finding of teenager?s right foot cut of woman at Seseh Beach not long ago, currently it was found a body without the identity at the same beach last Sunday (Apr 18). The body arrived at mortuary of Sanglah Hospital transferred by an ambulance of Kapal Hospital at around 2:00 pm Local Time.

According to the official, the condition of such unidentified male body had rotted because it was found floating in the sea. Allegedly, the body was one of the drowning victims. Until last Sunday, the body was entrusted at mortuary of Sanglah Hospital to wait for further examination. (san)

Israeli defense minister says occupation must end AP

JERUSALEM – Israel must recognize that the world will not put up with decades more of Israeli rule over the Palestinian people, the country’s defense minister said in unusually frank remarks Monday.

Ehud Barak’s comments, on the occasion of Israel’s Memorial Day, come against the backdrop of severe friction between the U.S. and Israel’s hawkish government over an impasse in peacemaking.

Last week, President Barack Obama issued a surprisingly pessimistic assessment of peacemaking prospects, saying the U.S. couldn’t force its will on Israelis and Palestinians if they weren’t interested in making the compromises necessary to end their decades-old conflict.

Barak told Israel Radio on Monday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has “done things that didn’t come naturally to it,” like adopting the vision of two states for two peoples and curtailing settlement construction.

“But we also shouldn’t delude ourselves,” he added. “The growing alienation between us and the United States is not good for the state of Israel.”

The way to narrow that gap is to embark on an Israeli diplomatic initiative “that doesn’t shy from dealing with all the core issues” dividing Israelis and Palestinians, he said.

These issues — chiefly, the sta-

tus of contested Jerusalem, final borders and a solution for Palestinian refugees of the war around Israel’s 1948 independence — have been negotiated multiple times in the past 16 years.

The pursuit of that big-picture program and “broad willingness to reach an agreement” has allowed Israel to get past the friction with the Americans over settlement construction in the past, Barak said.

The Israeli defense minister dismissed talk of an imposed U.S. solution — an idea that’s been fielded recently in Washington.

But he warned that while Israel is militarily strong, it needs international legitimacy as well.

“The world isn’t willing to accept — and we won’t change that in 2010 — the expectation that Israel will rule another people for decades more,” he said. “It’s something that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world.”

Palestinians aspire to a state of their own, he said, and “there is no other way, whether you like it or not, than to let them rule themselves.”

Barak heads the Labor Party, the only political party in Netanyahu’s government that is not considered hawkish. But in his three years as defense minister, Barak has not even taken down the two dozen settlement satellites that Israel promised the U.S. it would dismantle in 2003. Dovish critics have accused him of making Labor a fig leaf for the Netanyahu government’s hawkish policies.

China quake death toll nears 2,000 Reuters

YUSHU, China (Reuters) – The official death toll from an earthquake on China’s remote Tibetan plateau last week reached 1,944 on Monday, but rescuers dug out two more survivors who had been trapped under rubble for more than 100 hours.

Another 216 people are listed as missing after the quake struck last Wednesday, the official Xinhua news agency said, though rescue operations across the ruined town of Gyegu in Qinghai province’s Yushu country were being scaled down as the focus shifted to aid distribution.

Tents, food and water were being delivered to quake victims across the county seat of Gyegu, as well as further into the mountainous region.

President Hu Jintao flew to Yushu over the weekend to comfort survivors and examine relief distribution.

Hu vowed to rebuild homes and schools, and urged continued efforts to save anyone still alive under the crumpled remains of buildings.

In a rare moment of hope, res-

cuers pulled two people alive from a wrecked building after spending 123 hours trapped in the rubble, state television said.

Taiwan’s Red Cross Society sent a 20-person medical relief team to Qinghai on Sunday to help quake survivors with expertise and supplies, a Red Cross official said on Monday.

Many tents have been set up in the open areas of the city, including Gyegu’s main square, a sports ground and a horse-racing track.

Military troops and Buddhist monks are providing meals for the victims and medical teams are on hand.

“We hope they (the government) can provide us food and clothes,” said Suona Jiaxi, an ethnic Tibetan like the vast majority of people in

Yushu.

“If the government can take care of us, then we can live a little better than before,” the 33-year-old said.

The harsh conditions on the Tibetan plateau — Gyegu is about 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level — mean reconstruction is urgent. Temperatures drop below freezing at night and strong winds are frequent. Cold, snowy weather is forecast for the next few days.

In heavily Tibetan neighborhoods of town, some quake survivors said they still largely had to fend for themselves, gathering food and water and building their own makeshift tents.

Han Chinese quake survivor, Zhang Zhaojun, who is married to a Tibetan woman, said government aid had been sporadic.

The 30-year-old said his family had only received a tent on Sunday.

Earning less than a thousand yuan a month by gathering and selling Tibetan herbs, he sees a bleak future for him and his neighbors.

Nigerian troops foil sectarian attack AFP

JOS, Nigeria (AFP) – The Nigerian army said Monday it had averted an attack by suspected Muslim extremists on a mainly Christian village in the flashpoint central Plateau State, killing two gunmen.

The pair were part of gang that planned to raid Bisichi village, on the outskirts of Jos, the capital of Plateau, where hundreds of people have been killed in ethno-religious violence, a military commander said.

The attack early Monday was foiled by members of a military

task force deployed in the area following recent violence.

“Our guys were on regular patrol when they they received a distress call that the village was about to be attacked, so when they approached the village and in a shoot-out that followed, two of them (the gang) were gunned down,” Brigadier General Donald Oji told AFP by phone.

A manhunt has been launched for the rest of the group which fled in the pre-dawn encounter.

“What would have been a major setback to peace was averted,” Oji, the military spokesman for the area said.

A home-made rifle was recovered

along with military-issue ammunition. In what appeared to be a reprisal for earlier violence, herdsmen from the mainly Muslim Fulani clan launched a wave of attacks on five Christian villages in March, slaughtering more than 500 people according to state officials.

Oji said the population of Bisichi village, about 20 kilometres south of Jos, is a mixture of Christians and Muslims.

Jos has long been the centre of ethno-religious violence in a country whose 150 million population is divided almost equally between Christians and Muslims.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – An explosion struck Monday near a school run by a police foundation in the northwest Pakistani city of Peshawar, police said. There was no immediate word on casualties.

The nature of the blast was not clear, police official Haroon Khan said. However, several suicide attacks have hit the Taliban-riddled regions near the Afghan border in recent days, including two attacks in the Kohat area that killed around 50 people over the weekend.

The Police Public School was in session when the explosion went off.

The school is run by a police wel-

fare foundation, which tries to raise money to help families of police officers.

Also Monday, suspected Taliban militants in the northwest detonated two bombs that destroyed a pair of oil tankers along a vital supply route used by NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

nearby shops in the Takhta Beg area of the Khyber tribal region, local official Iqbal Khan said Alleged Taliban militants and ordinary criminals frequently attack vehicles along the supply route that runs through the famed Khyber Pass into Afghanistan. The U.S. and NATO say their Afghan operations have felt limited impact, but they are establishing alternate routes.

UNHCR concern as Australia detains asylum-seekers AP

ADELAIDE, Australia – The U.N. refugee agency expressed concern Monday that Australia is using holding newly arrived asylum-seekers in detention centers.

The government suspended refugee applications from Afghans and Sri Lankans on April 9, saying the situations in those countries had improved.

The new policy says the suspensions will be reassessed in three to six months. Until then, new asylumseekers will be housed in detention centers. The government has already been forced to open new centers to cope with an overflow of arrivals.

But the U.N. said Monday there should be alternatives to detention for those who posed no security risk.

“The combination of mandatory detention, suspension of asylum claims and the geographical isolation of detention facilities ... all without any effective judicial oversight — is a deeply troubling set of factors,” said Richard Towle of the U.N. refugee agency.

Detention is likely to have a negative impact on the physical and mental health of asylum-seekers, particularly those who have been tortured or traumatized before arriving in Australia, the U.N. said.

It particularly criticized the remote location of a new detention center to be opened at Curtin air force base in the state of Western Australia. The federal government announced Sunday that the facility, which had been used for the same purpose under the previous administration, would house up to 300 Sri

Lankan and Afghan asylum-seekers whose applications were on hold.

The government is struggling to cope with illegal boatloads of asylum-seekers who have filled an offshore detention center and fueled a political debate over immigration policies.

The current government relaxed immigration regulations in 2008, reducing the time would-be refugees spend in detention before their applications are processed and dropping a requirement that they must renew visas every five years.

The opposition claims that those changes led to the tenfold increase in illegal boat people in 2009 over the previous year. They say the illegal arrivals drain money and resources and that they should apply through the established U.N. refugee process.

LONDON (AFP) – Britain’s ban on flights in its airspace due to the volcanic ash cloud will remain until at least 0000 GMT Tuesday, air authorities confirmed.

“Conditions around the movement of the layers of the volcanic ash cloud over the UK remain dynamic,” the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) said in a statement, adding that they would update their assessment at around 0800 GMT. “Anyone hoping to travel should contact their airline before travelling to the airport.”

The group said it was keeping in close contact with the national weather service, and the Civil Aviation Authority.

The statement added: “We are working closely with government, airports and airlines, and airframe and aero engine manufacturers to get a better understanding of the effects of the ash cloud and to seek solutions.”

For its part, the Met Office said it would produce forecasts of the ash cloud four times a day.

“Weather patterns continue to blow volcanic ash towards the UK,” it said.

“Over the weekend, Met Office observations have detected dust in the atmosphere and on the ground.

A research aircraft has recently encountered dust during its flight.”

The service said it would be “looking for weather windows that will allow air space restrictions to be lifted”.

Some took positions atop buildings after searching for possible snipers and along a skywalk running several hundred meters (yards) above the road.

Others guarded bank buildings, ATM machines and entrances to subway and overhead rail entrances.

A number of those returning to work on Silom after the long Thai New Year holidays expressed support for the troops.

“I’m opposed to the idea of the demonstrators entering Silom. Everything will collapse. The economy will collapse,” said Kritsana Chumkong, a 38-year-old office worker.

The government accuses “terrorists” armed with guns and other weapons of orchestrating the earlier violence and says weapons were stolen from the military that have not been returned.

The protesters consist mainly of poor rural supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and prodemocracy activists who opposed the military coup that ousted him in 2006.

They believe Abhisit heads an illegitimate government because it came to power through a parliamentary vote after disputed court rulings ousted two elected, pro-Thaksin administrations.

The conflict has been characterized by some as class warfare, pitting the

country’s vast rural poor against an elite that has traditionally held power.

A main target of the Red Shirts has been Gen. Prem Tinsulanonda, who the loyalists say was a key leader in the military coup.

Prem is the president of the Privy Council, which advises the Thai king, and also serves as an adviser to the Bangkok Bank, one of the largest in Thailand.

The protesters claim that Prem helped arrange financing through the Bangkok Bank for a golf course that encroached on the Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary in southeastern Thailand. That allegation, plus other accusations of shady business deals between Prem and the bank, have been denied.

Abhisit has come under increasing criticism for failing to clear the protesters, but the government spokesman said Saturday there were no immediate plans for a crackdown because too many people were camped in the area to use force.

The Red Shirt protesters, formally known as the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, want Abhisit to dissolve Parliament and call new elections. They were initially camped in a historic district of Bangkok, and a failed attempt by security forces on April 10 to flush protesters from that neighborhood erupted into the worst political violence Thailand has seen in 18 years.

At least 25 people were killed, including senior military officers. More than 800 people were wounded, including about 300 soldiers.

Since then, the protesters have consolidated in Bangkok’s main shopping area, raising the stakes as they scare off tourists and rattle the stock market. Retailers and hotels say they have lost tens of millions of dollars.

Police have issued 24 arrest warrants for Red Shirt leaders accused of inciting violence, but so far none has been arrested. An attempt to arrest one leader Friday was thwarted when he climbed over a hotel balcony and was lowered by rope to a crowd of fellow Red Shirts, who helped him escape.

“The black campaign has disrupted the market of Indonesian pulp and paper products in the world,” chairman of the Indonesian Pulp and Paper Industries Association (APKI), Mansyur, said here on Sunday.

He said that the disrupted market of pulp and paper products was than made use of by South American pulp and paper industries.

“But now, Indonesia has begun to gradually win back the market it has previously lost,” the APKI chairman said.

Mansyur said that foreign NGOs had launched the black campaigns to destroy Indonesia‘s very competitive pulp and paper industries.

“The NGOs are aware of the fact that Indonesia`s pulp and paper in-

dustries are of good quality and competitiveness in the world market,” he said.

Therefore, Indonesia should be able to take advantage of the present momentum in the world market.

“After all, the price per ton of pulp and paper products in the world market has increased by US$50 to US$800 per ton. The price increases by an average of US$20-30 per ton in almost every two months. Last month, the stood only at US$600 per ton,” Mansyur said.

More than 120 ethnic Tamils expressed both relief and concern as they left the dock in Merak, a port in southern Java, after months of negotiations over their demands to be resettled in Australia as refugees.

“I don’t know where I’ll be taken but I’m happy to leave this place,” one of the migrants, Raju, 26, told AFP. The migrants have been on their boat or camped at the dockside since October when they were intercepted by the Indonesian navy as they tried to reach northern Australia.

They have said they are fleeing persecution in Sri Lanka following the end of the country’s civil war in May, but their refugee claims have not been processed by the United Nations.

Australia earlier this month said it would temporarily stop processing asylum claims by Afghans and Sri Lankans in response to a sharp rise in the number of asylum seekers reaching its shores by boat.

Latif, 21, said he still wanted to go to Australia but knew it was im-

possible.

“After six months at the port, I don’t wish to be here anymore. Life here is hard... people keep falling sick,” he said.

“I want to go to Australia but now I know it’s not possible. I want to go to America or New Zealand.

“I don’t want to stay in Indonesia... finding work will be hard here. I also don’t want to go back to Sri Lanka. There’s nothing there for me, no house, nothing,” he added.

The migrants are expected to be taken to the Australian-funded Tanjung Pinang immigration detention centre on Bintan Island, near Singapore, where their asylum claims will be assessed by the UN refugee agency.

“The negotiations were tough but after our humane approaches they agreed to go,” foreign ministry official Sujatmiko told reporters.

“I ask countries which think they can help them to come forward so their fates can be determined more quickly. Hopefully the process will be smooth,” he added.

Suramadu road to be named after former governor Antara

JAKARTA - The United States and Indonesia are scheduled to conduct a joint military exercise dubbed “Cope West 10” at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in eastern Jakarta April 19 through 23, 2010.

“Three US Air Force C-130 Hercules and approximately 77 airmen from the 374th Airlift Wing at Yokota Air Base, Japan, and one C-130 from the Indonesia Air Force are scheduled to participate in exercise Cope West 10,” a press statement from the US embassy here said on Monday.

Although Indonesia hosted Cope West 09 last year, this is only the second such exercise staged between Indonesia and the US since 1997 and symbolizes grow-

ing military cooperation between the two countries.

Cope West is a bilateral tactical airlift exercise involving the US and Indonesian air forces.

The exercise is designed to advance interoperability between the two air forces and allows for the exchange of techniques related to airlift air land and air drop delivery specific to US and Indonesian aircraft.

Cope West also promotes regional stability through cooperation and unity of purpose, as well as enhances combined readiness and interoperability, reinforces the US commitment to the Pacific, and demonstrates US capability to conduct tactical airlift operations in a bilateral environment, according to the statement posted on the official website of the US embassy in Jakarta.

Denpasar – Bali’s Governor, Made Mangku Pastika, said that he agree with the proposal by the member of Bali House of Representative to create a rule that regulate the minimum age for tourism vehicles.

In the meeting with the house, the governor said that the transportation tools are very important in developing tourism in Bali. He explained that currently there is the rule no 8 in 2000 which regulate the number of used motorcycles that can enter Bali.

However, the rules for tour agency can not stand on its own so the government urged all of the local government to create the rules and breakthrough to develop tourism in Bali. “New tourism sites should be developed such as environmental or spiritual tourism,” the governor added.

In order to achieve the goal, there must be good cooperation between all regencies and cities in Bali.

The governor also planed to develop the development in all part of Bali not only in certain area like what happened in the past few years. “I am agrees that the certain areas give special benefit or bonus for tourists so they wanted to visit the tourism sites,” the governor said.

The governor thinks that everybody must be committed to develop Bali. The equipments also must be prepared to make Bali as the world tourism destination.

DENPASAR – The volcanic ashes which come out from the Volcano in Iceland made almost all of the flights in Europe canceled. The condition is affecting Bali where almost all of the tourists from Europe cancel their trip to Bali.

Landslide kills one, injures two in Political stability essential to carry out economic development Karangasem Antara

DENPASAR - A landslide killed one resident and injured two others at Kesimpar village, Abang sub district, Karangasem district, 85 km from Denpasar, Sunday evening.

“The disaster happened on Sunday evening (April 18), after incessant heavy rainfall over the past few days,” Nyoman Karta, a local resident, said, here Monday.

The three victims were taking a bath in a river when the landslide hit from a 50-meter high cliff, he said.

The dead villager was identified as I Nyoman Rai (35), while the injured were Ni Nyoman Munir (40) and Ni Nyoman Sari (35), who were rescued by local residents and rushed to Amlapura hospital,

Karangasem.

Meanwhile, in early April, a landslide killed two persons at Gedekan, Giripurno village, Ngadirejo sub district, Temanggung District, Central Java.

The victims were identified as Sucipto (60) and his son, Anas Sobirin (11). The landslide occurred at around 10 pm Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB) and buried Sucipto’s house.

Ngadirejo Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner Sumarsono said the landslide was triggered by incessant heavy rains which had fallen in Mount Sindoro’s slope area since Monday.

Local residents and police personnel evacuated the two victims and rushed their bodies to a nearby community health post.

BALI - Indonesia should build domestic connectivity in a bid to step up competitiveness and economic growth, Coordinating Minister for Economy Hatta Rajasa said here on Monday.

“Before developing regional connectivity in Southeast Asia, Indonesia should first build domestic connectivity to step up its competitiveness and economic growth,” Hatta Rajasa said in his presentation at national coordinating meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at Tampak Siring Palace here on Monday.

According to him, connectivity building in the next five years should be accompanied with infrastructure development because it was part of the 2015 ASEAN Community plan.

Hatta added that to step up competitive power and infrastructure development, the government should also improve the work force because its dependency ratio has dropped in the past 15 years.

“Supported by the improvement in economic growth in East Asian countries, the work force in in South Korea and Japan has started to improve,” Hatta Rajasa said.

He explained that in its next four-year development program, the government would also go ahead with sustainable development with green development which pro growth, pro poor, and pro job.

“Therefore we have to make efficiency for the sake of energy development and waste management in infrastructure development,” Hatta Rajasa said, adding that it was also part of the United Indonesia Cabinet II program to build an inclusive, sustainable, and fair economy.

Thus in his presentation at the national coordinating meeting, Hatta Rajasa explained that up to 2014 the economic

growth would reach 7 percent, and unemployment rate 5-6 percent with an income per capita of US$4,500.

Present in the meeting were all cabinet ministers, governors, provincial legislative councils (DPRD) chairmen, state enterprises (BUMN) leaders, and state institution officials.

It will focus on four things concerning Indonesia’s economic development over the next five years, an evaluation of pro-people programs, law enforcement and justice for the people, and efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.

Ingredients: 250g ipun, ½ cup of grated coconut, ½ cup of coarsely grated coconut Spices: 4 cloves shallot, 2 cloves garlic, 1 large chili (sliced), 2 small chilies, 1 slice turmeric, 1 slice sand ginger (kencur), 1 slice ginger, 1 pc salam leaf, 1 pc kaffir lime leaf, ½ tsp salt, 1 tbsp cooking oil, 250 ml of water Method: · Cleanse the fish and drain thoroughly. · All spices are ground and then stir-fry until smelling fragrant. Put the fish into the spice on the frying pan. Pour the water and add the two kinds of grated coconut and some salt. Stir them for a while and wait until running dry. Take out and it is ready to serve.

Gua Lawah GUA Lawah or Bat Cave is one of favorite places of interest in Bali and it is located near of hilly bank so it is called reef of Middle hill. BUSINESS World Bank says East Asia could stabilise emissions by 2025 Agence France-Presse

BEIJING - East Asia could stabilise its greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 while maintaining economic growth by investing heavily in energy efficiency and low-carbon technologies, the World Bank said Monday.

Achieving this would require the region’s energy guzzlers to invest an extra 80 billion dollars a year to make power, industry and transport sectors more efficient and develop renewable energy, the World Bank said.

Success also depends on the region finding the political will for big changes as well as transfers of financing and technologies from developed countries, the Washington-based lender said in a regional energy report.

“Major investments in energy efficiency and a concerted switch to renewable sources of power... could simultaneously stabilise greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy security while improving local environments,” the report said.

But the World Bank warned time was running out and urged policymakers in energy-hungry China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam to act quickly.

“While many East Asian coun-

tries are taking steps in these directions, accelerating the speed and scaling up the efforts are needed to get on to a sustainable energy path,” it said.

“The window of opportunity is closing fast, because delaying action would lock the region into a long-lasting high-carbon infrastructure.”

If countries act, regional carbon emissions could stabilize by 2025 and begin to decline, said the bank, which provides financial and technical aid to developing nations.

It said carbon emissions could be limited to 9.2 gigatonnes a year by 2030 — 37 percent lower than the World Bank’s estimated level if governments stick to their current climate change policies.

Achieving the target depends largely on China, which accounts for 80 percent of energy consumption and 85 percent of regional carbon emissions, it said.

The world’s third-largest

economy will need to reduce its carbon emissions as a percentage of economic growth by an even greater margin than currently planned, the bank said.

It called that a “daunting goal,” given that China is still a developing country relying on energy-intensive, heavy-polluting industries.

It also noted that major policy and institutional reforms as well as big lifestyle changes would be needed throughout the region to achieve the goal.

“Developing countries will need to avoid the carbon-intensive path and wasteful lifestyles followed by industrial countries in the past,” the bank said.

On the upside, the shift to clean energy offered developing countries the chance to “leap-frog to the next generation of new technologies, create local manufacturing industries to drive down costs and become global technology leaders.”

BEIJING - China has moved to further curb real estate speculation by telling banks they will be allowed to refuse additional mortgages to buyers who own two or more properties.

The move comes soon after the government last week raised the minimum down payment for second home purchases as authorities try to rein in the market with the economy growing at a blistering pace.

Under the new rules, announced at the weekend, banks can also refuse loans to people who cannot prove they have lived and paid taxes for at least one year in the city where they intend to buy, the State Council, or cabinet, said.

Last week the State Council raised the minimum down payment for second home purchases to 50

percent and set a minimum 30 percent deposit on first homes bigger than 90 square metres (970 square feet).

The latest moves highlight growing concern in China that the property market is overheating, after prices in major cities rose 11.7 percent year-on-year last month, the fastest since the survey was widened to 70 cities in July 2005.

The State Council also renewed a pledge last week to rein in runaway prices by increasing the supply of land for construction, accelerating the building of affordable housing and cracking down on speculative activity.

But Royal Bank of Canada senior analyst Brian Jackson said the measures would not be as effective as higher interest rates.

“I have very strong doubts that is going to be enough to get the results they want in terms of slowing

down the property market and eventually they will have to use blunter instruments,” Jackson told AFP. China is trying various ways to prevent the growth of asset bubbles as the nation’s economy surges — it grew 11.9 percent in the further three months of the year — and keep a lid on inflation.

Beijing has been clamping down on bank lending which has been blamed for fuelling speculative investment in the property sector.

Policymakers have raised bank reserve ratios twice this year — effectively limiting the amount banks can lend — and increased interest rates on benchmark threemonth and one-year Treasury bills.

Analysts have forecast interest rate hikes as early as this month as well as a loosening of exchange rate policy, which has effectively pegged the yuan to the dollar since mid-2008.

BERLIN - Germany temporarily re-opened six airports shut because of volcanic ash, before announcing fresh closures at all but two of them until 2:00 am Monday (0000 GMT).

Takeoffs and landings at all airports including Frankfurt, one of Europe’s busiest hubs, would cease at 8:00 pm (1800 GMT), except at Berlin Tegel and Berlin Schoenefeld, the air safety agency DFS said Sunday.

At the German capital’s two airports in eastern Germany, flights would continue until 10:00 pm Sunday and a decision would be taken shortly before then on whether they could continue to operate, a DFS spokesman said.

Earlier, six airports — Erfurt, Leipzig and Hanover plus Frankfurt and Berlin’s two airports — were re-opened for limited operations.

Which flights were allowed depended on their intended direction.

The authorisation followed a weather forecast from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in London, one of six centres worldwide set up by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the DFS said.

A ban on all flights in German airspace had paralysed all airports in Europe’s biggest economy.

At Frankfurt temporary beds had been set up for some 700 transit passengers unable to leave the airport, while blankets and cold and hot food were distributed.

“Not one single weather balloon has been sent up to measure how much volcanic ash is in the air,” Air Berlin chief executive Joachim Hunold told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

Lufthansa spokesman Klaus Walter told Bild: “The flight ban, made on the basis just of computer calculations, is resulting in billionhigh losses for the economy.

“In future we demand that reliable measurements are presented before a flying ban is imposed.”

Lufthansa flew 10 aircraft — without passengers — from Frankfurt to Munich on Saturday, Lufthansa spokesman Wolfgang Weber told AFP. Air Berlin flew three flights.

“The planes were analysed and show no signs of damage, not even the slightest scratch on the cockpit glass, the fuselage or the engines,” Weber said.

Peter Ramsauer, traffic minister, rejected the criticism, telling Bild that any other decision but to close German airspace would have been “irresponsible”.

Germany’s national research centre for aeronautics and space (DLR) said that scientists would take to the skies on Monday to measure the ash at heights of up to 10,000 metres.

Carrie Underwood Makes History At The ACM Awards; Full List Of Winners Carrie Underwood made history at the Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday night, becoming the first woman to win entertainer of the year twice. Underwood won the show’s top honor last year. This year, she beat out Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, the Zac Brown Band, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, George Strait and Keith Urban.

Top-selling trio Lady Antebellum were the dominant winners, grabbing five trophies, including song and single record of the year for crossover hit “Need You Now,” while also snapping Rascal Flatts’ sevenyear run as best vocal group. “We are having a blast tonight,” singer Charles Kelly told the crowd after win No. 4. “We love you all. We will never forget this night.”

Meanwhile Lady A came into the awards ceremony at the MGM Grand with a leading seven nominations and had won five of seven possible (they got two trophies for their single record of the year win because they also produced the record, and also got two trophies for their song of the year win because they composed “Need You Now”). Best bud Miranda Lambert had three trophies on the night. She beat Lady A’s selftitled debut for album of the year with “Revolution.” It was the second time she won the honor; her “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” won album of the

year in 2007. She also beat Lady A in the video category with “White Liar” in awards given out Saturday night.

Lambert didn’t get to say much when she won album of the year. She started to address the crowd, then stopped short to make sure producer Frank Liddell got a moment in the spotlight. But as soon as he started to issue thank yous, he was cut off and the camera panned away, eliciting boos from the crowd. After a commercial break, she came back on stage to perform her latest single, “The House That Built Me,” and got another chance to speak when she won top female vocalist, beating out the likes of Swift and Underwood.

The tearful Lambert was in disbelief at her win.

Lady A also had a connection to one of the night’s other winners, Luke Bryan, who nabbed top new artist. Lady A’s Kelley and Dave Haywood helped their good buddy write his hit, “Do I.”

Kiefer Sutherland Emotional At End Of ‘24’ KIEFER Sutherland fought back tears as he wrapped hit show 24 - because leaving the series after nine years was “much more difficult” than he anticipated.

WASHINGTON – If the Census Bureau thinks it has its hands full counting Americans, imagine what scientists are up against in trying to tally every living thing in the ocean, including microbes so small they seem invisible. And just try to get them to mail back a form. The worldwide Census of Marine Life has four field projects focusing on hard-to-see sea life such as tiny microbes, zooplankton, larvae and burrowers in the sea bed. Tiny as individuals, these life forms are massive as groups and provide food that helps underpin better-known living things.

“Scientists are discovering and describing an astonishing new world of marine microbial diversity and abundance, distribution patterns and seasonal changes,” said Mitch Sogin of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., leader of the International Census of Marine Microbes.

The Census of Marine Life, which is scheduled to be reported Oct. 4 in London, has involved more than 2,000 scientists from more than 80 nations.

The decade-long census has discovered more than 5,000 new forms of marine life. Researchers think there may be several times that many yet to be found.

Previous updates have focused on larger creatures, such as a city of brittle stars off the coast of New Zealand, an Antarctic expressway where octopuses ride along in a flow of extra salty water, the deepest comb jellyfish ever found and The White Shark Cafe, a deep Pacific Ocean site where sharks congregate in winter. Now the researchers have turned to the tiniest of things, some of which burrow in the sea floor.

Remotely operated deep-sea vehicles discovered that roundworms dominate the deepest, darkest abyss.

Sometimes, more than 500,000 can exist in just over a square yard of soft clay. Only a few different types have been studied.

There are also 16,000 or more species of seaworms. There are loriciferans, which the scientists call “girdle wearers” because of hind shells resembling a corset. And there are hundreds of types of tiny crustaceans. “Such findings make us look at the deep sea from a new perspective,” says researcher Pedro Martinez Arbizu of the German Center for Marine Biodiversity Research. “Far from being a lifeless desert, the deep sea rivals such highly diverse ecosystems as tropical rainforests and coral reefs.” Consider zooplankton, the tiny, often transparent animals that some call sea bugs. They form a vital link in the food chain.

As of 2004, scientists had identified about 7,000 species of zooplankton. Now they expect that to double when they finish analyzing all the samples collected in the marine census. Improved techniques such as DNA analysis have helped unravel some errors along the way.

DNA, of course, is the genetic code in the cells of each living creature.

Tracey Sutton of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and colleagues led by the Smithsonian Institution’s G. David Johnson used genetics to show that three types of fish thought to be different are really one. They found that even though they look different, the

Mirapinnidae (tapetails), Megalomycteridae (bignose fishes) and Cetomimidae (whalefishes) are really the same species. The tapetails are the larvae and when they grow up they become either the bignoses (girls) or the wehalefish (boys).

After studying samples taken from more than 1,000 sites, scientists concluded there may be as many as 100 times more microbe genera in the sea than they had thought. Indeed, a 2007 study in the English Channel alone yielded 7,000 new genera of microorganisms. Genus is the category of life ranked between family and species. For example the mammal family has many genera, such as homo (humans), canis (dogs) and equus (horse). What ocean microbes lack in size they make up for in numbers. Marine census researchers calculate there are a “nonillion” of them. Never heard of nonillion?

Well, it’s a lot. It’s 1,000 times 1 billion, times 1 billion, times 1 billion.

Of course no one can really envision a number like that, so the researchers turned to the popular comparison measure — the African elephant. A nonillion microbe cells, they say, is about the same weight as 240 billion African elephants — or the equivalent of 35 elephants for every person on Earth. And that’s just the microbes.

GENEVA – Europeans should try to stay indoors if ash from Iceland’s volcano starts settling, the World Health Organization warned Friday as small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway.

WHO spokesman Daniel Epstein said the microscopic ash is potentially dangerous for people when it starts to reach the Earth because inhaled particles can enter the lungs and cause respiratory problems.

“We’re very concerned about it,” Epstein said. “These particles when inhaled can reach the peripheral regions of ... the lungs and can cause problems — especially for people with asthma or respiratory problems.” He also said Europeans who go outside might want to consider wearing a mask.

Other experts, however, weren’t convinced the volcanic ash would have a major effect on peoples’ health and said WHO’s warnings were “hysterical.” They said volca-

nic ash was much less dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution.

Volcanic ash is made of fine particles of fragmented volcanic rock.

It is light gray to black and can be as fine as talcum powder. During a volcanic eruption, the ash can be breathed deep into the lungs and cause irritation even in healthy people. But once it falls from a greater distance — like from the cloud currently hovering above Europe — its health effects are often minimal, experts say.

The Icelandic volcano that erupted Wednesday has sent an enormous cloud of microscopic basalt ash particles across northern Europe, grounding aircraft across continent.

It is drifting above 20,000 feet (6,000

meters), high and invisible from the ground.

“Not all particles are created equal,” said Ken Donaldson, a professor of respiratory toxicology at the University of Edinburgh, who has studied the impact of volcanic ash in people. “In the great scheme of things, volcanic ash is not all that harmful.”

Donaldson said most Europeans’ exposure to volcanic ash would be negligible and that only those in the near vicinity of the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk.

“Once the volcanic particles are in the stratosphere, they’re getting massively diluted because there’s a lot of air and other particles blowing around,” he said.

Nadal targets Barcelona after Monte Carlo win

PHOENIX – Andre Miller scored 15 points in the fourth quarter and tied his career playoff high with 31 points as the short-handed Portland Trail Blazers stole homecourt advantage from Phoenix with a 105-100 victory over the Suns on Sunday night. Methodical Portland was a tough matchup for the Suns all season and it was no different in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series, despite the absence of the Blazers’ scoring leader, Brandon Roy. LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 points and Nicolas Batum 18 for Portland. Jerryd Bayless also had 18 for the Blazers, 10 in the fourth quarter, but missed two free throws with 12.2 seconds left to give Phoenix a shot to tie. Steve Nash’s 3-point try was well short, though, and Miller’s two free throws iced the victory. Marcus Camby grabbed 17 rebounds for Portland, two shy off his career playoff best. Roy is out for the series after arthroscopic knee surgery, and the Blazers lost Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla earlier in the season. But Portland won two of three against the Suns, including a win at Phoenix when the Blazers didn’t have Roy. The Suns, the NBA’s highest-scoring team at 110 points per game, never got into their usually fluid offense but still led 87-85 after Stoudemire’s 16footer with 4:57 to play. Miller, though, made his only 3-point attempt of the night to put Portland ahead for good

88-87 4:28 from the finish, and then Aldridge sank two free throws to make it 90-87 with 4:12 remaining. Nash’s 22-footer cut it to 90-89, but Miller made two free throws, Aldridge tipped one in over Stoudemire, and Portland was up 94-89 with 3:37 left. Nash’s 3pointer briefly cut the lead to 94-92, but Batum responded with a 3 of his own 17 seconds later and Bayless made two free throws to put the Blazers up 99-92 with 1:29 to go.

The Suns missed repeated 3s before Jason Richardson finally made one to cut it to 103-100 with 12.5. After Bayless missed two free throws, Nash dribbled upcourt and let it fly, but his shot was not even close. Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry said his team would be fine if it hit its shots, but the Suns shot just 42 percent and were 9 of 24 in the final quarter, including 3 of 13 on 3s.

Portland was the aggressor from the outset while the Suns settled for jump shots. The evidence was at the foul line, where Phoenix had just two attempts in the first half.

The Blazers led 44-43 at the break behind Aldridge’s 13 points and Camby’s 12 rebounds. The Suns never led by more than four in the third quarter. Channing Frye’s 10-foot jump hook with 2.5 seconds left in the quarter gave Phoenix a precarious 72-70 lead entering the fourth. Leandro Barbosa scored 13 in eight minutes in the first half, when he made all five of his shots, three of them 3s. He was scoreless in the second half.

MONTE CARLO – Rafael Nadal will approach his home tournament on the Barcelona clay with fresh confidence after securing a historic sixth straight Monte Carlo Masters title on Sunday. The king of clay retained his crown by outclassing Spanish compatriot Fernando Verdasco 6-0, 6-1 to lift his first title in 50 weeks. In doing so Nadal became the first man in modern tennis history to win one event six times in succession and he will now look to repeat the trick in Barcelona.

“For me this is very emotional, this is probably my favorite tournament. I love this tournament. To win here another time is a dream for me,” he said.

“To win six times for me is unbelievable. I never expect something like that.” He improved to 16-6 his record at the Masters 1000 level as he claimed the 26th clay title of his career, having lost his only two clay finals against Roger Federer, in Hamburg in 2007 and Madrid in 2009.

“When you don’t win for a while, and you are playing really well, you really want to win,” said Nadal. “You are focused more than ever. Maybe for that reason I won easier than usual.

But that’s not normal. I’m going to have lots of problems on clay

in the future.”

Verdasco, now 0-10 against Nadal, again came away impressed. “He had an unbelievable day and he played really good. He didn’t let me attack him at all, with balls really high and deep,” said Verdasco. “I also maybe didn’t have a good day. I was trying to force things and made more mistakes than usual. “Today was my first Masters final. I had normal nerves before an important match.

But they were nothing special.”

With volcano ash from Iceland creating travel havoc and grounding air traffic across Europe, Nadal and his team will have to make the 500kilometre journey to Barcelona by road.

He will receive a first-round bye and is likely to face his first match on Wednesday after bring-

ing his unwelcome trophy drought to an end. The four-time Roland Garros champion returned to form with one of the most brilliant efforts of his storied career, losing a total of just 14 games and winning three matches with the loss of just one game in each. Victory in the final was Nadal’s 32nd straight win at Monte Carlo and he remains undefeated at the venue since 2003.

He dominated against Verdasco with seven breaks of serve while his opponent committed 32 unforced errors. The sixth-seeded challenger looked threatening only once, in the marathon sixth game of the second set, as he forced the fighting Nadal to save five break points to move ahead 5-1.

A game later it was all over on the first match point as Nadal broke back for victory.

Eto’o managed to make the game safe in injury time and, ahead of this week’s Champions League first leg against his former club Barca in Milan this week, he is keen to focus on their next challenge. “It was a difficult and tense game, but the important thing is we won and are now awaiting Tuesday’s match,” he told Inter Channel.

“We must get ready in a relaxed manner, testing out and predicting it in our minds, because you play games like this with your head more than anything else. Would I celebrate if scoring against Barcelona? Of course I would at San Siro, but at the Nou Camp I wouldn’t celebrate in front of my old fans. Barcelona are the strongest side in the world right now, but every match is different and we want to write history.”

Eto’s believes Maicon’s goal against Juventus - a spectacular volley - may prove the best of the campaign but he feels Inter’s determination was the decisive factor. “More than my goal, the key was the hard work of all the team,” he said. “My goal just gave us that extra bit of security. I think Maicon scored the best goal of the season so far. Aside from that, I was truly impressed with the heart the team showed. There aren’t many games left and we must keep fighting, as we can do this.”

Meanwhile Barcelona are making their way to Milan for their Champions League semi-final by bus. The Blaugrana were forced to change their travel plans on account of the volcanic ash that spread from Iceland last week, bringing all aircraft to a standstill.

Pep Guardiola and his players left Barcelona’s training ground at 2:45pm yesterday and arrived in Cannes six hours later where they stayed the night.

Having already driven 634km, Barcelona will begin their journey again this afternoon and should arrive in Milan around 7:00pm. In all, the Champions League holders will have clocked up 985km. Speaking to Sky Sports, Dani Alves said: “I would even walk to a Champions League semi-final.” His team-mate, Victor Valdes, added: “Travelling cannot be an excuse.”

Guardiola has named a strong 20-man travelling party for Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Inter Milan. Left-back Eric Abidal, who has yet to receive the green light to return to action following a thigh injury, and 20-year-old reserve defender Andreu Fontas are the two newcomers to the squad that took on local rivals Espanyol on Sunday.

The only players unavailable are Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta, who is set to be absent until midMay with a hamstring tear, and Ukraine international Dmitrio Chygrynskiy, who is ineligible.

“It is one of the most difficult moments I have had to live, but life has shown me to never give up,” he

wrote on his facebook page.

Guardiola hopes the midfielder will line up at the Bernabeu in the Champions League final. “He is sad and down - we want him back as soon as possible and let’s hope we can take him to the final at the Bernabeu,” the Barca coach said.

“He trains morning and evening and takes his profession as seriously as anyone. He doesn’t deserve this.”

Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho has gone out of his way to sing the praises of Barcelona counterpart Pep Guardiola ahead of the first-leg of their Champions League semifinal. Mourinho was considered for the Barca job before Pep Guardiola was appointed two seasons ago but the former Chelsea coach insists there is no chance of him ending up at the Nou Camp because of Guardiola’s brilliance. He said: “I totally agree when they say that Barcelona president Joan Laporta did better in choosing Guardiola than me. He’s certainly the best coach for Barca, and, as I told him myself in person, I hope he will continue as coach of Barca for ever.” He added: “Guardiola can be considered the best coach in the world because he won everything last season. If I win everything again I can be considered the best. The best coach is the one who wins most.”

MADRID – Real Madrid striking duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain grabbed a goal apiece as Real moved to within one point of leaders Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a 2-0 home win over third-placed Valencia on Sunday to set up a thrilling finale to the title race. Barcelona’s 0-0 draw at neighbours Espanyol 24 hours earlier had given Real a chance to close the gap and Real capitalised on the slip with Higuain netting his 25th goal of the season after 25 minutes before Ronaldo finished the game off on 77 minutes with his 20th goal of the season.

With five games left Real are just a point behind their arch rivals although if the two teams finish level on points Barcelona, who face Inter Milan on Tuesday in the semi-final of the Champions League, will win the title due to their superior head-to-head record. “Barcelona still have the advantage but being second with 83 points is good and they have the pressure to deal with knowing we are close,” said Guti.

“As far as the Champions League I have always said that I want Barcelona to lose and besides I have some great friends at Inter.” It was a 16th league home win of the season from 17 games

by Real - with a defeat to Barcelona the only blemish - and Higuain is just two goals behind compatriot Lionel Messi who has scored 27 for Barcelona to lead

Valencia, a massive 24 points behind Real in third, are five points ahead of fourth-placed Sevilla following their eighth defeat of the campaign and they will rue David Silva’s shot hitting the post minutes before Ronaldo grabbed the second goal. There was no Kaka again for Real with the Brazilian still not fully fit while Sergio Ramos continued in central defence in the absence of Ezequiel Garay.

For Valencia the spotlight was on midfielder Silva with the Spanish international strongly linked with big-spending Real in the local media.

With eight minutes gone Rafael van der Vaart, who scored the winner in the 2-1 win over Almeria in midweek, shot wide with his weaker right foot. Guti should have scored on 19 minutes after a great cut-back from Ronaldo but the midfielder pulled his leftfooted shot wide.

It was backs to the wall for Valencia and Higuain struck on 25 minutes with a neat turn to beat his man before dispatching past former Real goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez.

Four minutes later Higuain set up van der Vaart but the Dutchman could not apply the finishing touch with defender Alexis Delgado blocking the effort on the line.

Alexis was then in action at the other end on 33 minutes with his header forcing Iker Casillas into a scrambling save.

Ecclestone downplays volcano ash threat

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is convinced that the travel crisis caused by the exploding Icelandic volcano poses no threat to next month’s Spanish Grand Prix taking place. With the majority of the F1 circus trapped in Shanghai following the cancellation of flights back to Europe, questions have emerged about whether the Barcelona race on May 6 will escape the travel chaos that has already forced MotoGP organisers to postpone their next round in Motegi this weekend.

Whitmarsh says McLaren needs big push McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh thinks his team needs to push ‘very hard’ to improve its car if it is going to keep its advantage at the head of the world championship. After a brilliant 1-2 finish for Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, McLaren grabbed the lead in both points tables and left early-season pace-setters Red Bull Racing and Ferrari ruing the missed opportunities of the opening flyaway races.

But despite wining two of the first four races, Whitmarsh thinks that McLaren must improve the speed of its car - especially in qualifying terms – if it is going to catch up with Red Bull in particular. “We need to develop our car quicker than the others,” Whitmarsh told AUTOSPORT. “I think Barcelona is a challenge. I am sure the teams are going to step up with upgrades on the car, and we have to push very hard to see if we can go there with a bigger step than the others. I think

in racing we are closer to the Red Bulls. In qualifying we are still behind the Red Bull. They are the fastest in qualifying and this is a development race now. We have given ourselves the foundation at the flyaways, but we are back into Europe.”

“We now have to really push hard and keep reliability, which you cannot take for granted, keep racing well and keep developing the car. If we do that we can win these championships. That is what we have got to try and do.” Whitmarsh has also praised the efforts of his team and drivers in helping deliver such a healthy number of points in the first races of the year. “It is testament to the team and the drivers,” he said about the fact his team was leading the championship despite not having the quickest overall car. “I think here in qualifying we had the second fastest car. I think here we were slower still than Red Bull. I think we underperformed in qualifying and didn’t make it easy for ourselves.”

“We are a race team, I think we are not a bad race team. We don’t always get it right, but we make decisions and we get on with it. We have two drivers who are great racers. They are part of the team and have made a massive contribution, and I think the team as a whole has worked together to try and get the maximum number of points we can.” When asked whether Button’s great start to the year had surprised him, he said: “I don’t think so. It is not surprise. Jenson has done a fantastic job with the team, and I think he is a mature world champion with a lot of experience. He has had some tough times in his career and has clearly learned from it. How he has conducted himself in the team, how he has formed a relationship with Lewis, how he operates out on the track is just fantastic. Here we are, four races in and he has won two of them.”

But although teams may have difficulties in getting personnel back to base swiftly, with cars and equipment likely to be delayed too, Ecclestone is sure that the Spanish GP will go ahead as planned. “I am sure everything will be all right,” said Ecclestone in Shanghai. “There is no question of cancelling the Spanish Grand Prix. Of course, it is causing everybody problems, but we will find a way to get everyone home.”

F1’s cars will not be able to return to the team’s factories until the freight planes that carry them can get out of Europe, where they are currently trapped. If the flight delays continue for a few more days then it is possible the F1 freight could be shipped directly to Barcelona. And with the prospect of it taking weeks to sort commercial aircraft timetables out once European airspace is open again, F1 teams are working hard to ensure that their staff can get back to base quickly.

A number of outfits, including Ferrari, McLaren and Lotus, have chartered their own aircraft to take personnel back to Europe. McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said: “McLaren committed this morn-

ing to a charter plane for Wednesday to fly to Spain. We were the first to commit to that and have said that if it is a big enough plane then anyone else can come on board. “We took the flyer and said that if it is half empty then we will bear the premium, so as long as we have got our team on it then we are happy for it to be full. I think some teams were hesitating this morning but they are now jumping on board pretty quick. Hopefully, as Spain is about the only place you can fly into, we can get them into Spain on Wednesday and onto coaches for Santander or road route home.”

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali added: “Everyone is waiting to see what is going on. On the material side we know that either we move all the stuff, or we keep it here.

So either we do another race here or we move altogether back to Europe!

“Everyone is waiting to see the updates and at the moment I would say the normal flights we are booked on are totally closed. To wait means we wait here for one week or 10 days, I don’t know, but we are trying also to see if we can organise ourselves another way of moving through a charter flight.
