BCA Indemnifies the Money of Customers Denpasar (Bali Post)—

ATM fraud case towards a number of banks is now stirring the Bali’s community. In fact, victims of break-ins continue to grow until reaching 15-20 victims. Police and the bank were confused after knowing the case for the first time happened in Bali. Because from the existing number of casualties, the losses reach hundreds of millions of rupiah. Spokesperson of Bali Police, Gde Sugianyar, when asked for his confirmation, last Wednesday (Jan 20), justified the increase of ATM fraud victim. “We do not know for

sure the number of victims. Clearly there are three banks becoming the target of skimming, namely BCA, Permata and BNI,” said Sugianyar to journalists last Wednesday. The former Head of Balikpapan Sector Police explained he did not know surely about the number of victims because victims reported the case to many places. Some victims reported their case to Kuta Sector Police, Denpasar Metro Police and the Bali Police. “There are about 15-20 victims who have reported their case. The loss reached half a billion,” he said. What are the measures of Bali Police in responding to this ATM

fraud? Sugianyar explained, his party should make coordination with the cyber crime team. Cyber crime team would conduct investigations related to this ATM fraud. “Strongly alleged, transaction of money was made through ATMs,” he estimated. It was in view of the withdrawal or transaction of the victim occurred on Saturday and Sunday. “Well, these indications imply the transactions were done through ATMs. If transactions were conducted in the bank, it was not possible because the banks were closed on those days,” explained Sugianyar in the midst of the safety riding so-

cialization in Kuta last Wednesday. Furthermore, it was explained similar cases have occurred overseas. Perpetrators were known to install a sophisticated tool to withdraw their victim’s money. The tool could track the data in ATM card and copy them. Even, the PIN number of victims could be detected. On that account, incidents ensuing in Bali could be possibly like what happened overseas. “We are not sure what really happened, especially the cause. The crimes occurred in the ATMs because of the lack of security system such as the non-existence of CCTV,” he said. Continued on page 6
