Denpasar (Bali Post) – The trial for the murder of Yoseph Indawan-Maria Maywati Atatang with the defendant Paulus Bambang Sugiarto was held in Denpasar court on Tuesday, October 27th 2009. The trial was very tense because the witness Andreas Bambang Sugiarto rejected his previous statement.

The condition made the judge IGN. Adhi Wardana, presented the police who investigate the case, Made Sutirtayasa. The witness said that he didn’t know about the murder case. “I was being tortured by the police so I was forced to make

that statement. Actually, I never conducted the murder,” Bambang said in front of the court.

He also said that he never sign the statement and the police who signed it for him.

The heavy rain which happened in Busungbiu district in Buleleng regency for three days, create landslide in Tista village in Busungbiu.

The wall of Tista village office and a hall was destroyed by the landslide.

The Office Opens Today, Four Officers Mutated AFTER the robbery ensued at BRI Unit of Gatsu Barat, Dalung, Northern Kuta, Badung, situation of location looked silent, last Monday (Oct 26). Though police have removed the police line installed in front of door, the bank was not opened officially. Based on monitoring of Bali Post, last Monday (Oct 26), police line has been removed. Its rolling door looked to have been open. There were two officers in charge at location. One officer was security, Nengah Wirya, and another bank officer was Luh Gede Wirawati.

Open door made a number of customers who wished to save their money or had other interests came in. However, local officer informed that bank was not opened actively.

“Excuse me sir, what is the purpose of your coming? This bank has not been opened actively,” said the security officer last Monday.

Not only one customer coming to the bank, but more up to tens came to the bank. However, after provided with explanation by bank officer, they cancelled to save or withdraw their money. Information gathered, mentioned that the bank would be operated normally effective from Tuesday (Oct 27). Though

it remained encapsulated by aura of trauma, the officer of local bank stated that the bank would be opened. “Tomorrow, this bank will be open,” said Nengah Wirya confessing that he was a security officer taken from BRI of the office at Jalan Gajah Mada, Denpasar.

Alleged a Bomb, Plastic Pack to Shock Residents Semarapura (Bali Post)—

A black plastic pack shocked the residents around the five-cross, Klungkung, last Monday (Oct 26), including the officers of Joint-Office of Vehicle’s Administration (Samsat) of Klungkung. Such plastic pack was neatly strung and put under name board of the office. A number of identification officer and Criminal Researcher of Klungkung Resort Police were assigned to recheck in person the pack at location. Information at location mentioned that such plastic pack was first seen by an owner of food stall around location at 9 a.m. Local Time. He informed the finding to a number of surrounding residents, including some police officers in charge at five-cross post. The information was resumed to Klungkung Resort Police.

Three houses were drowned by flood in Manistutu village, Jembrana. There was no victim in the disaster.

To Cause Three Houses Sink and Muddy Flood Negara (Bali Post)—

Heavy rain showering Jembrana and Gianyar, last Sunday (Oct 25) night, caused a number of houses were engulfed by flood. In Jemberana, Benel Dam at Manistutu Village overflowed. As consequence, a number of houses belonging to local residents living at riverside sank until left its roof at sight.

The incident killed no lives. Such flood soaked at least three buildings up to three meters. In the meantime, the rain overwhelming the territory of Tegallalang, Gianyar, Sunday night caused a misfortune to the family of I Wayan Lanus (90) from Pujung Kelod Hamlet, Sebatu Village, Tegallalang, Gianyar. In the midst of heavy rain, suddenly his house was lunged by landslide accompanied with muddy flood.

The incident almost killed a life. Local residents could save Wayan Lanus who was once washed away by the flood.

In that disaster, the house existing on the depth of 50 meter, at a valley, was washed away by muddy flood until sanctum of the family, customary pavilion and kitchen were badly damaged. At the time of incident, six members of the family almost became victim. They were Wayan Lanus, his wife Ni Nyoman Patri (80), his son Nyoman Alit (34), his daughter-in-law Ni Made Suwetri (39), and his grandsons, Wayan

Sukadi (12) and Made Sukandana (5).

Lanus, who just recovered from his illness, was washed away by muddy flood lunging their house.

Lanus was washed away until 200 meter from his bed. Local residents knowing the incident attempted to save them by evacuating and finding Lanus hooking onto riverside of Yeh Injin, Pejengaji. This victim suffered from injury on right hand and his leg was swollen until he got medical treatment at Sanjiwani Hospital of Gianyar.

Meanwhile, five other members of his family were safe in the incident.

Landslide and muddy flood occurred at 1:30 a.m. Local Time. It happened because the landslide at roadside above a gorge with the height of 50 meter. The rain starting from Sunday night around 10:00 p.m. Local Time made some sectors of the road flood.

inspected the location right away. The Regent Tjok Ace instructed the office services and related authority to collect data on the incident.

After a Month

In the meantime, in Jemberana a house belonging to I Gusti Komang Dapna sank. Apart from sinking his house, his kitchen building was invisible. On the surface of water, one could only see its roofs. Besides, his sanctum comprising seven shrines were not entirely discernible, either.

Then, his rice granary was washed away by the flood. Other than his house, that of I Gusti Putu Suartawan was also inundated by water.

Deputy Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha, inspected the location in person. According to Artha, local residents should have left such hazardous location. Moreover, their land has been given indemnity. (sur/dar)

Three Sea Sand Thieves Captured at Bugbug Beach Amplapura (Bali Post)—

Civil Servant Police Unit (Pol PP) of Karangasem, last Monday (Oct 26), captured three thieves of sea sand. Sand theft at Lepra Beach, Bugbug within the past few days turned more aggressive so the beach underwent sufficiently serious abrasion. Teens of coconut trees fall down and they left their humps scattering around the local beach.

Head of Satpol PP of Karangasem, IB Anom Suryadarma, accompanied by Section Head of Enforcement, IGK Raka Grantipala, leading the operation said that sand of Bugbug Beach was known to have good quality. On that account, the sand stolen by surrounding residents was sold to consumers bringing truck from Gianyar, Badung, Denpasar and Tabanan.

It was said that such refined sand almost ran out and only left gravels. Afterwards, the surface of such beautiful beach became pockmarked and at a number of points has been lower. It caused the coastal abrasion in front of prawn breeding project.

One of the sand miners captured and taken to the office of Pol PP was I Nyoman Sukarta (26). He admitted to be from Samuh Hamlet, Bugbug. Sukarta

with two other friends were captured and evidences in the form of carrying stick and shovel were seized. “For the first phase, we will give briefing to these perpetrators of sand theft,” he said.

Actually, added Suryadarma, the sand thieves have been frequently given briefing. Even, perpetrators were once handed over to police and sent to court.

Sukarta admitting to steal sea sand was just for side job beyond his main job as a boat attendant.

He was unlucky whereas there were more than 50 other residents also engaging in such sand digging.

Sand diggers at the beach, added Sukarta, sold the sand to truck’s driver even those from outside Karangasem. The sand was sold at IDR 20,000 per meter cubic. A source at location said that trucks conveying the stolen sand have commenced their activity from 3 a.m. Allegedly, they deliberately performed the activity at night to avoid the inspection done by Pol PP. Punishment for sea sand theft, he said, was severe enough pursuant to the Act of Environmental Affairs. Based on Regional Legislation No.492, a violator could be imposed with a fine of IDR 500 million and subsidiary punishment of six-month imprisonment. (013)

Obama: ‘I’m skinny ... but tough’

MIAMI - US President Barack Obama on Monday lashed back at critics who fear he lacks the steel to be a successful president, saying “I’m skinny ... but I’m tough.”

Obama, who is trying to navigate a climate of sharp political partisanship, said he was spoiling for a fight to enact his ambitious

agenda.

“There are people saying mean things about me and folks are worried,” Obama said, as he headlined a pair of Florida Democratic Party fundraisers that racked up a total of 1.5 million dollars.

“Just ‘cause I’m skinny doesn’t mean I’m not tough. I don’t rattle,” Obama said, tongue in cheek.

“I’m not going to shrink back, because now is the time for us to continue to push and follow through on those things that we know have to be done but haven’t been done for decades.”

Obama reeled off a list of what he billed as the early achievements of his administration, including rescuing the economy from a possible depression.

He also said he was “confident” that he would be able to force a landmark healthcare reform bill through Congress by the end of the year.

A number of commentators have in recent weeks started to question Obama’s fortitude, worrying that his cool demeanor masks a lacking killer instinct.

Iran says two nuclear fuel options still on table Agence France-Presse

TEHRAN - Iran said on Monday it could ship out some of its low-enriched uranium to be upgraded abroad or buy the fuel directly, as a UN team ended its inspection of a newly revealed atomic plant.

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran was mulling the UN-brokered deal which envisages sending Tehran’s low-enriched uranium (LEU) abroad to be converted into nuclear fuel, and would announce a decision within days.

“For the supply of (nuclear) fuel, we may buy it like in the past or we may deliver a part of our (low-enriched uranium) fuel that we don’t need now,” Mottaki told the official IRNA news agency, indicating for the first time that Tehran could possibly agree to the UN-drafted deal.

“Both options are on the table.”

Mottaki is also the most senior official to talk about buying the fuel directly from a foreign supplier since the UN atomic watchdogbrokered deal was suggested earlier last week.

The UN-brokered deal was proposed first by world powers through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mottaki said.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also suggested this arrangement a day before October 1 high-profile talks in Geneva between six world powers and Tehran about Western concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Western powers back the UNbrokered deal and are keen that

Iran’s LEU be taken out of the country as they suspect Tehran would process it further on its own to higher purity levels and use it to make atomic weapons.

Tehran denies the charge.

France has said the deal aims to transport 1,200 kilos of Iranian LEU to Moscow to be converted. The Islamic republic is estimated to have 1,500 kilos of LEU at its enrichment plant in the central city of Natanz.

But the UN-led offer has met with tough opposition from some top officials who suspect Western powers of creating obstacles for Iran’s uranium enrichment drive, which they ultimately want suspended.

Enrichment of uranium is the most controversial aspect of Tehran’s nuclear programme since it can be used both to generate electricity — as Tehran says it is doing — or to make the fissile core of an atom bomb.

“Making a decision to choose which option is on the agenda of the Islamic republic, and in the next few days the decision will be announced,” Mottaki said.

Meanwhile, Alaeddin Borujerdi who heads parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee, told ISNA news agency that the four-member team of UN experts on Monday ended its inspection of a controversial second uranium enrichment plant.

“They ended their job,” the MP said without elaborating.

A source close to Iran’s atomic body also told AFP the inspection had ended and the team “will leave tonight.”

Karadzic genocide trial set to resume Agence France-Presse

THE HAGUE - Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic vowed to boycott the second day of his genocide trial in The Hague Tuesday as the court prepares to hear the prosecution’s opening statement.

Karadzic refused to attend the first day of his trial on Monday, forcing a one-day adjournment after a sitting of just 15 minutes and the presiding judge accusing him of obstructing the process.

Despite an appeal from judge OGon Kwon to reconsider, Karadzic said through a legal representative on Monday that he would also not be present for the second day of the hearing — insisting he needs more time to prepare.

Karadzic, 64, is conducting his own defence.

He is charged with 11 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity for his role in the 1992-95 Bosnian war that claimed about 100,000 lives and forced some 2.2 million people from their homes.

He denies all the charges, but faces life imprisonment.

Kwon on Monday warned Karadzic of “measures that can be taken should he continue to obstruct the progress of the trial”. This may

include imposing a defence lawyer on him or proceeding in his absence.

But after meeting Karadzic in his jail cell, his legal adviser Marco Sladojevic said the former leader of the self-proclaimed Bosnian Serb republic “will not appear” before the court Tuesday as he needed more time to study a million pages of prosecution evidence and hundreds of witness statements. Sladojevic also stressed that Karadzic “will never accept any imposed counsel” as demanded by the prosecution.

International law professor Willem van Genugten of the Tilburg University in the Netherlands, said the judges appeared to be buying time in adjourning the trial for a day in a bid to “lure Karadzic to the court”.

While they had threatened to impose a lawyer on him, actually doing so could could mean months of legal wrangling, he told AFP. The court has denied repeated requests by Karadzic for a months-long

delay in the start of the trial.

“If Karadzic is not there tomorrow, the judges may have no choice but to start negotiating with him for a delay,” Van Genugten said — as allowing the prosecution to make its opening statement in Karadzic’s absence may give him grounds for a later appeal.

The hearing is set to open at 2:15 pm (1315 GMT).

Karadzic stands accused of having “participated in an overarching joint criminal enterprise to permanently remove Bosnian Muslim and Bosnian Croat inhabitants from the territories of Bosnia Hercegovina claimed as Bosnian Serb territory,” according to the charge sheet.

Key among the charges is the massacre of more than 7,000 Muslim men and boys at the UN-protected enclave of Srebrenica in July 1995, as well as the 44-month siege of Sarajevo that ended in November 1995.

He is alleged to have worked with Yugoslav strongman Slobodan Milosevic, who died midway through his own UN genocide trial in March 2006. Karadzic’s former right-hand man, Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic, is still on the run.

Thai PM backs autonomy for troubled south Agence France-Presse

BANGKOK - Thailand’s prime minister backed Tuesday a suggestion by his Malaysian counterpart to grant autonomy to the insurgency-hit Thai south, as five more people were killed in the Muslim-majority region.

Abhisit Vejjajiva said he would discuss the plan for the restive southern provinces on the Malaysian border when Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak visits Thailand in December.

Razak said in a newspaper interview published on Monday that Thailand should offer “some form” of autonomy to the region, where more

than 3,900 people have been killed since separatist violence erupted in January 2004.

In response, Abhisit said: “That’s the right approach.

“My government is working to make it materialise and in early December I and my Malaysian counterpart will visit the southern region,” he told reporters.

Malaysia’s Razak told Thai English-language daily The Nation that “you may not want to call it autonomy but there could at least be some form of involvement”.

“It is Thailand’s decision to consider how far such autonomy in the

deep south should go, and Malaysia, as a neighbour, would not intervene in the matter,” he was quoted as saying.

The region was an autonomous Malay Muslim sultanate until 1902 when it was annexed by mainly Buddhist Thailand, sparking decades of tension that spiralled into a full insurgency five years ago.

Thai government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said the Malaysian premier had admitted the southern violence was a “totally Thai domestic affair” and had vowed to cooperate with Thailand to solve the problem.

KUALA LUMPUR - One child died and two others are missing after a bridge collapsed at a campsite in northern Malaysia, sending a group of students plunging into the river below, police said Tuesday.

Nineteen of the youngsters were rescued from the fast-flowing river after the accident Monday evening in Perak state, where they had been among 298 children on a camping trip.

“From reports from the teachers on the scene we believe that there were 22 children on the bridge when it collapsed,” said Kampar police chief Aziz Salleh.

“Nineteen of these students have been rescued,” he told AFP. “We have found one Indian girl drowned and another two are still missing, so we are carrying out search and rescue operations to find the two students.”

Salleh said that most of the survivors were quickly hauled out of the river by their teachers. Some 300 rescuers were at the scene, scouring the riverbanks for any sign of the missing pair.

The camp was part of the

government’s “One Malaysia” scheme, aimed at fostering integration among the multicultural nation’s ethnic groups, through activities like traditional cooking, cultural education and games.

State television showed dozens of parents at the campsite waiting for news of their children, as investigators examined the supports of the 50 metre walking bridge, which appeared to have been torn out of the ground.

Deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin visited the site and spoke with distressed parents, promising the government would probe the cause of the collapse of the newly installed bridge.

“What has occurred should not have happened and we want a full investigation into what happened and those responsible to be held accountable,” he said.

Witnesses said the children were

walking across the narrow bridge to attend a dinner when the accident occurred.

One survivor, 12-year-old K. Mathivanan, said the children were playing and jumping on the bridge before it began swaying, and then suddenly gave way.

“Suddenly we were thrown into the river and I managed to grab a rope hanging off the collapsed bridge. The river currents were very strong but I managed to pull myself to safety,” he told state news agency Bernama.

Mohammad Safri Abdul Rafar, a teacher who was nearby, said he was alerted by the screams of students coming from the river.

“I jumped over the fence and dived into the river and managed to rescue three or four students. The current was very strong and I almost drowned and was forced to return to the bank,” he told Bernama.

WASHINGTON - US authorities rescued 52 children, including one as young as 10, from prostitution rings and arrested nearly 700 people during a nationwide sting operation over the weekend, the FBI said Monday.

The three-day push in 36 US cities “led to the recovery of 52 children who were being victimized through prostitution” and the arrest of close to 700 others, “including 60 pimps, on state and local charges,” the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

“Child prostitution continues to be a significant problem in our country, as evidenced by the number of children rescued through the continued efforts of our crimes-against-children task forces,” said Kevin Perkins, assistant director of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division.

The roundup, which officials said took place over the previous 72 hours, was part of a larger FBI program called “Innocence Lost,” whose task forces have removed nearly 900 children from the streets since 2003, convicted 510 people and seized 3.1 mil-

lion dollars in assets, the FBI said.

Agents targeted truck stops, casinos, street corners and websites as part of their hunt for offenders.

“They target areas known to have prostitution,” FBI special agent Jason Pack told AFP. “When they find young looking ones they try to find ways to engage the folks and go from there,” he said.

The youngest person taken off the street was a 10-year-old girl in the midwestern United States. The other 51 were mostly females under age 18, he said.

The FBI said initial arrests for solicitation typically uncovered larger, more organized efforts to prostitute women and children across the United States.

“It is repugnant that children in these times could be subjected to the great pain, suffering, and indignity of being forced into sexual slavery for someone else’s profit,” said assistant attorney General Lanny Breuer of the Criminal Division.

SYDNEY - A monster shark at least five metres (16 feet) long is lurking in popular waters off northeastern Australia, drawn to the area by the dumped carcasses of beached whales, officials have said.

Queensland fisheries minister Tim Mulherin said bite marks on a carcass, found off the popular tourist spot of Stradbroke Island, suggested that a great white shark — also known as white pointer — was menacing the area.

“The experts believe it would have taken a white pointer at least five metres long to cause this kind of damage,” said Mulherin.

Conservationists said they believed the dumping of dead whales was luring the deadly great white to the area, and called for carcasses to be towed further offshore.

“It would certainly attract a lot of

predators and scavengers — white pointers love dead whales,” said Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland president Simon Baltais.

“It is costly but is the loss of one human worth it because it was too costly to tow carcasses further out?”.

Great white sharks are the world’s largest known predatory fish, and can grow up to six metres long and weigh 2,240 kilograms (4,938 pounds).

There was a spate of shark attacks in Sydney during the southern hemisphere summer earlier this year, including the savaging of a navy diver near the iconic Opera House.

A surfer lost his hand in an attack just 36 hours later at Bondi Beach.

According to records, 194 people have been killed in shark strikes in Australia over the past two centuries but researchers are quick to point out that more people die from bee stings and lightning strikes.

TANJUNG PINANG - An Indonesian provincial governor refused Tuesday to allow an Australian customs vessel to unload 78 Sri Lankan asylum-seekers, saying Indonesia is not a “dumping ground” for refugees.

Indonesia agreed to take the Sri Lankans on humanitarian grounds after their boat ran into trouble in Indonesian waters off Sumatra Island last week en route to Australia.

They were rescued by the Australian navy and transferred to an Australian customs boat, the Oceanic Viking, which was to deliver them back to Indonesia — the country from which they launched their bid to reach Australia.

Initially scheduled to unload its human cargo at Merak, western Java, last week, the Oceanic Viking was diverted for unknown reasons about 900 kilometres (560 miles) north to the Riau Islands port of Kijang.

But Riau Islands Governor Ismeth Abdullah told reporters they were not welcome.

“We ban the Australian vessel carrying 78 Sri Lankan migrants from coming ashore at Kijang port,” he said.

“Unless there’s an order from the president, the ship cannot come ashore. We’re not a dumping ground for other countries.”

Indonesian officials are on board the vessel and Australian seamen could be seen distributing food to the Sri Lankans, according to an AFP reporter who went to the area by boat.

Asked how they were feeling, some of the Sri Lankans shouted back that they were “fine”. They said they had fled Sri Lanka’s war-torn Jaffna region six months ago.

Indonesian officials from various departments have been unable to explain why the Sri Lankans have not disembarked, amid mounting opposition from Riau officials who say they are Australia’s responsibility.

“Our position is we reject the boat. Why must Indonesia accept a boat that was picked up by Australia?” provincial justice and human rights official I Gde Widiartha said.

The migrants are the first test of

a “framework agreement” on asylum-seekers announced last week after a meeting between Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta.

Indonesia is a major thoroughfare for migrants hoping to sail to Australia with the help of people smugglers, but it has no law against people smuggling and is not a signatory to the UN Convention on Refugees.

Under the framework agreement, Australia has reportedly offered millions of dollars to help Indonesia accommodate asylum-seekers in exchange for greater efforts to prevent their departure for Australia and disrupt smugglers.

But the so-called “Indonesian Solution” is already under fire over reports of overcrowding and abuse in Indonesian detention centres as the migrants’ asylum claims are processed by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).

Rudd said he expected international agencies would ensure humane conditions prevailed.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith denied Australia was “pushing the asylum seekers into Indonesia”.

JAKARTA - Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar said his office would conduct orderliness operation against foreign workers illegally working in the country.

“All foreign workers in Indonesia must be legal, meet criteria and laws. In view of that we will conduct an orderliness operation against those working illegally,” he said after inspecting the Foreign Workers Service Outlet at the ministry building on Monday.

He said he would cooperate with the immigration office and the police for the operation.

“We must work together with the immigration office and the police to keep monitoring foreign workers. We need foreign workers for economic growth but their presence must not close the opportunity for Indonesian workers,” he said.

He said his office would increase control over foreign workers in the country to prevent the presence of illegal ones.

On the occasion the director general of manpower placement and development, I Gusti Made Arka, said an foreign worker violating visa regulations violates Law Number 13 of 2003 on manpower.

“If a foreigner holds a tourist

visa or a visit visa but works in Indonesia it means he/she violates Law Number 13 of 2003,” he said adding “we will act against them as soon as we receive report about it.”

Gusti said manpower employees would always monitor the presence of foreign workers in Indonesia to assure that they work according to the jobs and period allowed by the law.

He said there are now around 50,000 foreigners working in various sectors in the country such as from Malaysia, China, Japan, the US, South Korea and India.

According to data the manpower ministry issued 47,320 ministerial permits for foreign workers (IMTA) in 2007, 53,150 in 2008 and 45,946 until October 12, 2009.

He said around 30 companies applied for foreign employment plan (RPTKA) to the ministry everyday and 200 people applied for IMTA. From employment licensing the government receives skills and expertise development funds (DPKK) which is non-tax state income as compensation from the foreign workers.

The revenue from DPKK in 2007 reached US$54.274 million in 2008 US$68.206 million and until October 12, 2009 US$56.125 million.

JAKARTA - Police uncovered a methamphetamine production facility in an apartment room in Pulomas, East Jakarta, on Monday.

The head of the national police’s public relations division, Inspector General Nanan Soekarno, said the police had held two suspects namely Hariyanto alias Yudi and Hari Subroto while another suspect had been declared wanted.

During the raid the police confiscated meth production containers, a stove, a drier, an oven, a refrigerator, 700 grams of methamphetamine

and 500 grams of liquid meth and 400 ecstasy pills, he said.

Others being confiscated were chemicals used for making meth such as caustic soda, toluene, red phosphor, iodine, aceton and alcohol.

He said the suspects had also rented a room in another apartment to keep the product.

In Room 2009 of City Home Apartment in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, the police confiscated 2,000 grams of meth believably produced in the Pasadenia Apartment in Pulomas.

“We are still investigating the case as the other suspect known by his

initials as TN has not yet been caught becuase he is still in Malaysia,” he said.

Police believed an international syndicate was involved in the case.

Seen from the evidence so far the ring could be categorized as a big network because the meth confiscated reached 3,200 grams worth Rp4.8 billion consumable by up to 32,000 people based on calculation of one gram for 10 persons.

Nanan said the suspects were suspected to have been operating for several months and sold the product in Jakarta and its surroundings.

In 2011 the target become 7,324,883 and it increase become 7,552,135 (2012), 7,779,388 (2013), and 8,006,641 in 2014. Singapore which is well known for its efficiency, is one of the country send most tourists to Indonesia, followed by Japan and Malaysia.

In 2010, the number of tourists from Singapore is predicted will be around 14,984,600 people. Japan will be around that number also while Malaysia will be around 6 million tourists.

In Europe, Germany, England, and Netherlands predicted to become the highest tourists supplier for Indonesia. In 2010, the number of tourists from those countries will be around 82,315,300 people from Germany, 69.683.200 (England), and 27.129.200 (France).

The number of tourists from Russia was also increasing gradually. According to the data from United Nation, everyday in 2009, the profit

gained from tourism in Asia-Pacific region was $2.6 billion.

While last year, the total profit throughout the world was $944 billion. Indonesia was very lucky because it grow 13% compared to Asia Pacific region which was only grow 1.2% this year.

Syamsul Lussa said that one of the thing that support Indonesian tourism is the promotion but the fund is always determined by the government. “Our approach is by using the less budget but producing high income. Malaysia was using $100 million and producing $14 billion but Indonesia was only using $15 million to produce $5.35 billion. So we are more efficient than Malaysia,” he added.

In order to increase the efficiency, the tourism businessmen in Indonesia must alter the paradigm and ways of business. Pitana said “one of the most important thing is we must focus on the market. Many challenges ahead and many countries in Asia are started to arrange their tourism sector.”

DENPASAR - Indonesia has significant potential to engage in carbon trading but has yet to have sufficient skills compared with other countries grouped in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

“Indonesia’s opportunity to sell carbon is big enough but it still needs reinforcement from developed countries,” Indonesian Climate Change spokesman Agus Purnomo in Nusa Dua. Speaking after the opening of the 31st Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Purnomo said that through the panel the IPCC members were expected to reinforce the countries which had potential in carbon trade.

He said that of 227 proposals Indonesia submitted, at least 30 had been agreed by Carbon-dioxide Board in Germany, and even three to five proposals have had certificate.

But Purnomo added that Indonesia still needed a right time to sell carbon with reasonable price.

“It is better for Indonesia to postpone the carbon sale while waiting for the result of the 15th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate

Change (UNFCCC) in Copenhagen next December 2009,” Purnomo said.

He said carbon price would probably be more expensive after the UNFCCC in Copenhagen to recommend countries with many carbon industries to reduce emission.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Climate Change Board chairman Rachmat Witoelar said the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in Bali was participated in by scientific institutions from geophysics, meteorology, environment, forestry, maritime, and government representatives. “Through the IPCC, scientific aspects in climate change as the basic material for the preparation of next UNFCCC will be discussed,” Witoelar said.

He said Indonesia would propose that developing countries be given assistance.

“Developed countries with much carbon emission should have responsibility to developing countries,” Witoelar said in the company of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) chairman Sri Woro B Harijono.

The IPCC which is to last until October 29 are participated by 430 delegates from 140 countries and research institutions.

Amanna Gappa himself was a prominent figure, playing a big role in collecting and recording the maritime law. He lived in the Wajo region in the 17th Century.

Shipping traditions and development together with Amanna Gappa’s “law” system had made the Indonesians well- recognized as superior seafarers. It is the responsibility of the Indonesian nation to preserve our country’s maritime traditions.

In the 1970s, a group of Ger-

man scuba divers landed at Sanur Beach, to develop Bali’s diving areas with the cooperation of locals, organized around POSSI Indonesia’s Association of Diving Sport.

Two marine scientists, Dr. Nick from Britain, and Dr. Knoet, from Norway joined the diving pioneers in this tourist resort of Bali with two Indonesian officials engaged with the PPA Nature Conservation Agency.

(Marinated Grilled Fish) Overview: The fragrance of seasoned fresh fish sizzling over charcoal is almost irresistible.

Ingredients: 1 kg (2 lb) whole snapper, cleaned 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper crushed 1 cup seafood spice paste Oil to brush fish

Preparation: With a sharp knife cut four slits about 2 cm (3/4 in) deep on both sides of the fish. This allows the seasoning to penetrate better and the fish to cook more evenly.

Season outside with lime juice salt and pepper. Fill the inside of the fish with seafood spice paste. If possible, leave the fish to marinate for several hours to improve the flavor.

Brush outside of fish with a little seafood spice paste and oil, place on charcoal grill and cook over medium heat. Turne fish frequently and continue to brush with seafood spice paste and oil.

Jukut Kakul (Snail Soup) Overview: The French are not the only ones to have a liking for snails. The Balinese gather snails in the rice fields. But you can use the canned variety. Cucumber, zucchini or any other summer squash can be used instead of green papaya.

Ingredients: 200 gr unripe green papaya 1 liter chicken stock ½ cup spice paste for seafood 1 stalk lemon grass bruised 2 salam leaves 1 tbsp oil 48 canned snails, washed and drained 1 tsp salt Freshly ground black pepper Fried shallots to garnish Preparation: Peel the papaya, cut in half lengthwise and remove the seeds, then cut it lengthwise in 4 or 6 slices. Cut crosswise into slices about 0.5 cm thick.

Combine stock, spice paste, lemon grass, salam leaves and oil in a large pot. Bring to boil, and then simmer for 5 minutes. Add papayas and simmer until almost tender. Add the snails and continue cooking until the papaya softens.

Season with salt and pepper to taste and garnish with fried shallots.

Helpful hint: If you do not care for snails. You can substitute 12 dried black Chinese mushroom. Washed and soaked I warm water for 20minutes. Add them together with the papaya to ensure they will be tender by the time the papaya is cooked. (www.baliguide.com/balifood)

SEOUL - International experts Tuesday debated ways to measure the world’s well-being, in line with G20 calls for statisticians to take into account people’s happiness and not just their economic output.

The global economic crisis “has revealed the growing gap between official statistics and people’s perceptions of their standards of living,” said Angel Gurria, secretarygeneral of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The four-day forum opened in the South Korean port city of Busan to investigate ways of “going beyond GDP” (gross domestic product) and produce a new set of data to better measure the quality of life.

Gurria told experts on the environment, development, business and social issues that without such new indicators, a “crisis of confidence” could erode trust in institutions and in democracy itself.

The OECD’s forum follows a call by G20 leaders at their September summit for statistics “to better take into account the social and environmental dimensions of economic development”.

It will also push ahead with the recommendations of an expert com-

mission set up by French President Nicolas Sarkozy on the subject.

The Sarkozy commission chaired by Nobel prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz wants to move away from indicators based on production to ones based on people’s well-being.

It says these should assess the levels of freedom, security and contentment as well as economic and ecological resources.

The idea of replacing GDP was pioneered by the small Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Starting in the 1970s, then-monarch Jigme Singye Wangchuck promoted “Gross National Happiness” as the goal of development rather than gross domestic product.

Gurria, in a keynote speech, said even during the years of strong growth, “GDP was growing but most people did not necessarily feel better-off. Now, the problem is even more critical.”

In addition to the loss of jobs, pensions and houses so far, he pre-

dicted unemployment would continue to rise in most OECD countries throughout 2010.

“Last but not least, the emergency rescue package that many countries put in place are often perceived as having mostly benefited the lucky and undeserving few,” Gurria said.

“Going forward, there is a major risk that people will lose confidence in markets and institutions, and in the capacity of governments to address their problems.

“This is a major political challenge: we have to restore trust and we can only achieve this if policy action has tangible impacts on people’s life.”

Gurria said political momentum is now building for a new generation of statistics to focus on social well-being and progress as well as sustainability issues and various forms of inequality.

“Economic resources are not the only thing that matters in people’s life.”

MUMBAI - India’s central bank held key interest rates steady at record lows on Tuesday, but said it was time to roll back some of the “unconventional” measures taken to counter the global financial crisis.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Duvvuri Subbarao said in a statement that the economy was not ready for a hike in “conventional” short-term lending rates, the main policy tool at the bank’s disposal to influence lending.

But the bank did reverse some of the monetary policy measures taken during the global financial crisis that had served to increase liquidity in the banking system when there were fears about a lending shortage.

Economists had anticipated the decision to hold short-term interest rates, saying any hike would likely come later this year or in early 2010 once a recently observed economic uptick had become entrenched.

“The precise challenge which the bank faces is to support the recovery process without compromising on price stability,” Subbarao said in the statement. He is expected to make a statement later Tuesday, The repo, the short-term rate at which the central bank lends to commercial banks, was kept at 4.75 percent, while the reverse repo, the rate at which it borrows from banks, was held at 3.25 percent.

“The policy was on expected lines.

The RBI is sending signals and preparing the system for a tightening of rates in the near future, led by inflationary concerns,” said Rupa Rege Nitsure, economist with state-run Bank of Baroda.

The RBI did increase the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) — the minimum share of bank deposits to be held in government bonds, cash and gold — for commercial banks to 25 per-

“Reversing conventional measures is not appropriate for now, but the unconventional measures can be reversed immediately,” said Subbarao after the half-yearly review of monetary policy.

The central bank said there were definite signs of recovery and kept its earlier growth forecast at 6.0 percent “with an upside bias” for the year to March.

Inflation has mirrored the growth in output, rising to 1.0 percent over 12 months for the week ended October 10 after a poor monsoon sent food prices spiralling across the country.

The central bank has said inflation could rise further in coming months, forecasting it at 6.5 percent by March next year.

Siddhartha Sanyal, an economist with Edelweiss Securities, said he thought the bank would have sounded more concerned by rising inflation.

“We expected the central bank to be more hawkish, looking at rising inflation,” he said.

Indian share prices — which had been taking their cue from a Wall Street plunge — recovered briefly in reaction to the announcement, but were still down 1.43 percent in afternoon trade.

Singapore visitor arrivals rise in Sept: govt Agence France-Presse

SINGAPORE - Singapore said Tuesday visitor arrivals in September grew 7.1 percent from last year, the first increase recorded in 2009.

The Singapore Tourism Board said in its monthly report that 799,000 people visited the city-state in September, up from 746,000 for the same month in 2008.

Increased arrivals from Indonesia and Malaysia, the biggest and third-biggest source of visitors respectively for Singapore, were the main drivers behind the rise, the tourism board said.

Malaysian arrivals increased 51.2 percent to 68,000 while Indo-

nesian arrivals rose 27 percent to 183,000, it said, attributing the improved figures to the Eid al-Fitr Islamic public holidays in the two countries.

Singapore’s tourism sector is suffering from the global slump as people cut back on business and leisure travel with arrivals slumping in the first eight months of 2009.

The city-state is targeting 9.0-9.5 million visitors this year, generating an expected 12.0-12.5 billion Singapore dollars (8.6-9.0 billion US) in revenue.

It received 10.1 million visitors last year, missing its target of 10.8 million as travel slowed in the second half due to the global slump.

Actor Val Kilmer to play journalist in Georgia war film Agence France Presse

TBILISI - US actor Val Kilmer has arrived in Georgia to portray a journalist covering last year’s Georgia-Russia war in a Hollywood film about the conflict, the movie’s coproducer said Tuesday.

“He will take part in filming in (the Georgian city of) Gori and play the role of a journalist who covers last year’s war,” the co-producer, Papuna Davitaia, told AFP. Davitaia refused to provide any further details about the role and said Kilmer would be in Georgia for a week of filming.

Georgian media on Tuesday noted Kilmer’s resemblance to a Dutch cameraman, Stan Storimans of the RTL news channel, who was killed during a bombing raid in Gori, and speculated that his character would be based on Storimans. The 24 Saati (24 Hours) newspaper ran front-page photos comparing the two men.

Kilmer, known for his roles in “Top Gun” and as singer Jim Morrison in “The Doors,” is the second Hollywood actor in Georgia this month for the film.

US actor Andy Garcia, who was nominated for an Oscar in 1991 for his role in “The Godfather: Part III,” spent a few days in Tbilisi last week to portray Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in the film.

Finnish-American action movie director Renny Harlin announced in August he was shooting the film.

Best known for action movies such as “Die Hard 2” and “Cliffhanger,” Harlin told Variety magazine he was keen to make a serious movie based on the conflict.

Harlin’s film would follow an American journalist and a cameraman who get caught up in the fighting. Harlin said the movie would be a “strong anti-war statement.”

Georgian media have raised questions about the film’s impartiality, pointing out that co-producer Davitaia is a pro-Saakashvili member of parliament. Georgia and Russia have competed to put their own spin on what happened during the war, which saw Russian forces pour into Georgia to repel a Georgian military attempt to retake the rebel region of South Ossetia.

Russian forces occupied swathes of Georgian territory and bombed targets across the country before mostly withdrawing into South Ossetia and another rebel Georgian region, Abkhazia, which Moscow later recognised as independent countries. Tbilisi contends it was facing a large-scale Russian invasion before the attack on South Ossetia, while Moscow insists it was protecting Russian citizens and peacekeepers in the region from an unwarranted Georgian attack.

LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson fans will get a poignant glimpse of what might have been as a movie charting the tragic singer’s rehearsals for his concert comeback makes it worldwide debut on Tuesday.

More than 100 hours of behind-thescenes footage for Jackson’s aborted return to the stage have been distilled into a two-hour film hyped by organizers as the last ever performance by the “King of Pop.” Jackson family members and fans will gather at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles for a 6:00 pm (0100 GMT Wednesday) premiere, one of more than 15 simultaneous screenings held across five continents in a reflection of the pop icon’s global reach.

“This Is It” will go on a limited twoweek release in theaters worldwide starting Wednesday, with advance tickets in several countries selling out within days of going on sale last month.

“It’s a movie about rehearsing for a concert that never happened,” Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal said in a recent interview.

Jackson, who died on June 25 aged 50, had spent the previous four months rehearsing in Los Angeles for a gruelling series of 50 concert spectaculars scheduled to begin at London’s 02 Arena in July.

More than 800,000 tickets had been

sold for the concerts, with organizers promising one of the “most expensive and technically advanced” live shows ever. Jackson was putting the finishing touches to the show at the time of his death, which authorities in Los Angeles have ruled a homicide.

Video footage from the rehearsals had been intended to help organizers critique the show and was never intended for public viewing. Sony bought the footage for 60 million dollars after executives saw only several minutes.

Sony has said an “unprecedented number” of shows across the United States have sold out and other cities — including London, Sydney, Bangkok and Tokyo — experienced similar levels of demand after tickets went on sale in September.

Analyst Jeff Bock of box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations said the film could “play bigger than Elvis.”

“This is more of a memorial than a movie,” Bock told AFP. “I think we could be looking at 70 to 100 million dollars in the first five days alone, which is extraordinary for this type of film. The movie got an early stamp of approval from Jackson’s long-time friend and confidante, actress Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor, who recently underwent heart surgery, hailed the movie as the “single most brilliant piece of filmmaking I have ever seen” in a tweet on micro-blogging site Twitter.

WASHINGTON – Someone had to hold Bill Cosby back to keep him from crawling over a balcony and joining fellow comedians on stage as the stars lined up to pay tribute to his life’s work.

When the lights went out for the start of the 12th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Cosby filled the dark silence Monday night. “Hellooo?” he called out at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. And once again, he had his audience laughing.

Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld saluted their fellow funny man with the nation’s top comedy prize, along with two co-stars from “The Cosby Show,” Phylicia Rashad and Malcolm-Jamal Warner. They hailed Cosby’s work breaking down racial barriers and stereotypes and replayed his standup routines.

Cosby quipped that usually when a man sees his life flash before his eyes, it’s for a bad reason.

“But this is all right,” he said.

First lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, were among those in Washington watching clips from Cosby’s long career — from his classic standup routine of Noah’s chat with God about building an ark to dealing with the stresses of raising a family as a TV dad.

Seinfeld and Rock shared the

stage and said they followed Cosby’s comedy albums as children, which inspired their own careers.

Then they got lost in banter about how they could never measure up, after seeing Cosby together more recently at New York’s Apollo Theater.

“What was he wearing?” Rock said. “Something ridiculous,” Seinfeld quipped. “But he did two hours — all new material.”

“I’m not that funny,” Rock said.

“I’m definitely not that funny,” Seinfeld said.

Instead, Seinfeld and Rock tossed to a clip of Cosby’s classic impression of a visit to the dentist.

“The first thing he grabs is an iron hook,” Cosby says in the clip. “Then he starts to drill and you see and smell smoke coming out of your mouth!”

As a clip of Cosby’s famous impression of a visit to a dentist ended, Cosby turned to his wife, Camille, who smiled and clapped. Cosby later said comedians’ wives often want autopsies of their husbands’ brains to see what’s going on in there.

Comedian Dick Gregory chimed in with jokes about his long friendship with Cosby.

“When the stock market crashed

last September, they was going to repossess my Rolls-Royce,” Gregory said. “I said, ‘Bill, what do I do?’”

Cosby’s response, according to Gregory: “Don’t park in front of the house!”

Critics often point out that “The Cosby Show,” which aired in the 1980s, broke new ground because it was about a successful black family with a father who’s a doctor and mother, a lawyer, raising five children.

Gregory said Cosby started breaking barriers even earlier with the “I Spy” TV series, which cast a black man and a white man as co-stars.

After that, Gregory said, promoters never again referred to him as a “Negro comic.”

“A billion years from now, you will be respected for what you were able to do,” he said, looking up at Cosby who was seated in a balcony.

“You painted words with your mouth, and they will always exist, and they will always last.”

Of all his accomplishments as a comedian, actor, author and television producer, Cosby said he is most proud of the “Cosby Show,” which he carefully crafted. Rashad, who played Claire Huxtable on the series, flew from London where she is in rehearsal for “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” to be part of the show at Cosby’s request.

On stage, she recalled the chemistry she and Cosby shared as TV parents.

Simple lifestyle tweaks key in climate change fight: study Agence France Presse

WASHINGTON - The United States could cut greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of France’s total annual emissions by getting Americans to make simple lifestyle changes, like regularly maintaining their cars or insulating their attics, a study showed Monday.

If US households took 17 easyto-implement actions — like switching to a fuel-efficient vehicle, drying laundry on a clothesline instead of in a dryer, or turning down the thermostat — carbon emissions could be cut by 123 metric tons a year by the 10th year, the study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found.

“This amounts to... 7.4 percent of total national emissions — an amount slightly larger than the total national emissions of France,” showed the study led by Thomas Dietz of Michigan State University’s department of sociology and environmental science and policy.

“It is greater than reducing to zero all emissions in the United States from the petroleum-refining, iron

and steel, and aluminum industries, each of which is among the largest emitters in the industrial sector,” the study said.

But the lifestyle changes come with a much smaller price tag and no great change to the way Americans live.

At present, US direct household energy use accounts for 38 percent of the country’s carbon emissions, or 626 million metric tons of carbon — a whopping eight percent of global emissions “and larger than the emissions of any entire country except China.”

The researchers grouped 17 actions Americans could take to reduce carbon emissions into five groups: weatherization, switching to more efficient equipment, maintaining equipment, adjusting appliance setting — such as the temperature on water heaters — and modifying daily personal use.

Weatherizing homes by improving attic insulation, sealing or replacing drafty windows and doors, could cut carbon emissions by 21 million metric tons.

Installing energy-efficient appliances to replace those that have reached the end of their useful life would save nearly 12 million metric tons of carbon emissions.

Even seemingly minor steps like not speeding away from a stop sign when driving, regularly maintaining one’s car, or turning down the heat-

ing at home in the winter to 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius), could save between four and eight million metric tons in carbon emissions by year 10. The lifestyle tweaks and positive results don’t have to be limited to the United States, either.

Similar percentage reductions are possible in Canada and Australia, which have carbon profiles comparable to that of the United States, while Europe and Japan could save around half of the US level in percentage terms by getting their citizens to make the same changes, the study said.

TOKYO - The Japanese eyewear company behind Sarah Palin’s designer glasses has come up with a high-tech solution for obsessive videogamers and bookworms whose eyes dry out from lack of blinking.

Masunaga Optical Manufacturing Co. Ltd. said Tuesday its “Wink Glasses” — retailing for 40,000 yen (430 dollars) — were an answer to the ocular dehydration caused for instance by prolonged computer use.

When a sensor detects that the wearer has not blinked for more than five seconds, the glasses “fog up” by gradually making a liquid crystal display over one eye turn opaque. A simple blink clears the lens again. Masunaga, based in the central Japanese city of Fukui, has enjoyed a boost in sales since Palin burst to international prominence last year as the Republicans’ vice presidential pick in the United States.

SALVADOR DE BAHIA - “The Thinker,” the iconic sculpture by French artist Auguste Rodin, has a new home for the next three years: a museum in this tropical city in northeastern Brazil.

The figure, of an athletic man sitting and resting his chin on his hand in contemplation, is one of 62 works being loaned to the new Rodin museum in the Palacetes das Artes in Salvador de Bahia, which opened its doors on Monday.

“The Kiss,” another Rodin work almost as famous, is also on display.

The unprecedented cooperation between the Brazilian and French museums was finalized out as part of the Year of France in Brazil, a celebration of French culture that winds down next month. But the entire arrangements took eight years to complete.

“These works carry the marks from the hands, from the fingers of Rodin as he worked to give shape to his ideas and instincts.

In that, they are unique and rare, and allow us to understand the creative process of the artist,” said Heloisa Helena, the conservator of the Salvador museum.

Wozniacki forced to grow up quickly Agence France Presse

DOHA - Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki has come a long way in 12 months, breaking into the world’s top 10, reaching a first Grand Slam final before seeing her sporting reputation threatened.

The 19-year-old has also slogged through a marathon agenda of 87 matches in 2009 and seen her run to the US Open final reduced to a footnote in the Kim Clijsters title-winning story.

With her first participation in the season-ending WTA Championships here marking the end of her year to remember, it’s a recent incident in the Luxembourg event that is threatening to undo all her work.

Her injury pullout when cruising to victory in the low-key indoor tournament prompted a WTA investigation after a reported surge in Internet betting on the match.

Wozniacki insists that there was nothing suspicious in the incident which came in the match against home player Anne Kremer.

“I didn’t do anything wrong. I was injured. There was no chance for me to finish, so I decided to stop.

I don’t have anything to do with betting. I’m against it,” said Wozniacki.

“I went to the hospital the next day to get a scan.

The doctor told me that I had a strain.” Wozniacki insists she has nothing to fear from the WTA investigation. “I talked to them. There’s nothing suspicious about the match. So there is no big deal.”

Twelve months ago, Wozniacki was 12 in the world; now she is number four and widely-tipped to make a Grand Slam title breakthrough next year.

French PM calls for change after Marseille-PSG clashes Agence France Presse

HEM, France - French prime minister Francois Fillon on Monday demanded 24-hour notice prior to the cancellation of sporting events after violent clashes between Marseille and Paris-Saint Germain football fans.

Hundreds of supporters from the rival clubs had to be dispersed by police in the Old Port area of Marseille on Sunday evening after their Ligue 1 match was postponed at short notice due to an outbreak of swine flu at the Parisian club.

Around a dozen people suffered minor injuries.

“I ask that from now on there should be 24 hours’ notice before the cancellation of a big match,” Fillon said during a trip to the northern French town of Hem. “I ask the Minister of Sport (Rama Yade) how we can make the (French Football) Federation observe a 24-hour period of notice when they decide to cancel a game.”

The prime minister condemned “in the strongest terms possible” the violence that followed as “inacceptable”.

Earlier, the French Professional League (LFP) announced that a new date for the match will be set on Thursday.

Marseille had requested that the match be played this Wednesday, which they termed “the only intelligent date” in view of their Champions League commitments.

But the league’s Competitions Commission ruled out Wednesday as premature and an emergency meeting has now been called by the LFP for Thursday.

“The experts have strongly recommended a minimum isolation period of 72 hours, at least until Wednesday morning. This was accepted by PSG,” the LFP said in a statement.

“As a result it’s not feasible, unless our experts change their minds, to put the team in the plane on Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning.

“Only after three days will we know the extent of the virus - we won’t be clear of new cases

by Tuesday or Wednesday.

“From a purely physical point of view, playing a top-level match with players who haven’t trained for three or four days, some coming back from illness, seems impossible and is without any doubt an injury risk.”

PSG on Saturday confirmed that their former France international attacking midfielder Ludovic Giuly and defender Mamadou Sakho had contracted swine flu.

It was then announced on Sunday that midfielder Jeremy Clement had also contracted the virus and there were fears that two other squad members had symptoms. One of these was believed to be striker Loris Arnaud.

The match was the first in France at senior level to be cancelled due to swine flu.

MAGDEBURG - Having been crowned European shot put champion in 1986, Heidi Krieger was one of the stars of the former GDR. But having been subjected to a doping program like thousand of other former East German athletes, Krieger realised on her 1990 retirement that the effects of testosterone hormone abuse had left her with all the traits of a man.

She opted for a sex change operation and is today known as Andreas whose birth certificate has been altered and, sporting a moustache, he now owns an army clothes shop in Magdeburg.

The confident, strapping man of 1.87m shows a copy of his photo from his competition days as Heidi, and a timid girl stares out from the image with short brown hair and broad shoulders hidden in a tracksuit.

“I don’t know if I would have remained as a woman, because my problems were already there, but they stole my story from me,” the 44-year-old told AFP. “I never had the possibility of saying: I do not want to take hormones.

“I was barely 16 years old when my coach first gave me those blue pills.”

During the 20-year period the GDR competed as a separate state, the tiny country of 16 million people won 519 medals at 11 Olympic games - 192 of which were gold.

To achieve this success, the East German state ensured their athletes had the best available facilities and equipment, coaching and medical back-up, psychological testing and dietary supplements.But it was the scale of state-sponsored doping known as State Plan 14.25 - that set East Germany apart and was only brought to an end after the collapse of communism when the Berlin wall came down 20 years ago.

It is estimated some 10,000 athletes were part of the doping program which even involved the Stasi,

the state’s secret police service, to make sure athletes took Turinabol, an anabolic steroid which encourages muscle growth.

Each athlete was on an index of prescribed hormones and the small country from behind the iron curtain became a medal factory. Krieger was “Athlete No 54” in that list.

The GDR finished second in the medals table of several Olympic Games including Montreal 1976, Moscow 1980 and Seoul 1988.

At the European Athletics Championships in 1986 held in Stuttgart, Heidi Krieger won gold in the shot put and Andreas still has the telegram of congratulations sent to him

by GDR leader Erich Honecker addressed to “My dear friend of sport”.

But the anger still burns. “At that time, I felt increasingly foreign in my own body,” he says, having opted for a sex change operation 12 years ago.

“I officially became a man and I obtained a new birth certificate.”

As Heidi died, so Andreas took life and the man empties a plastic bag full of medals onto the counter in his clothes shop which he won as a woman.

Only the gold medal from Stuttgart is missing - he donated it to the association of the GDR’s doping victims. “That medal doesn’t mean anything to me now,” he said.

Andreas is now married to a former GDR swimmer and is one of the rare athletes to have spoken out against doping while others perfer to stay silent through fear their achievements will be tarnished.

But the after-effects of large-scale doping are only coming to light now with the victims suffering from a host of disorders including cancer and sterility. “I still carry plenty of anger in me now,” confessed Krieger.

“After the wall came down, West Germany simply took the knowledge from the trainers in the old GDR. “These East German coaches knew how to manufacture champions, they are still producing medal winners today. “Medals count more than morals.”

Totti goes under knife for another knee op ROME - Roma captain Francesco Totti on Monday had surgery on his right knee for the second time in 18 months, his club said in a statement.

The 33-year-old forward previously suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee a year and a half ago but following training on Monday he went to see the club doctor, when it was decided that he would need surgery.

No details were given about long he will be on the sidelines but he is due to start his rehabilitation on Tuesday, according to the club statement, at which point an assessment will be made on when he may be available again.

Totti has been in good goalscoring form for Roma this season but has been injured for their last two matches, both of which they lost.

ROME - Serie A title pretenders Juventus and Sampdoria will have 24 hours to make up some ground on leaders Inter Milan on Wednesday.

The champions do not play until Thursday, by which time Sampdoria could have replaced them at the top if they win. The problem for the Genoabased club is that they face a tough away trip to Juventus, although on current form there is little to fear from the Turin giants.

Until a week ago, Juve had not won for a month and five games, but although they have managed two wins since then, neither was convincing.

Their 1-0 victory over Israeli minnows Maccabi Haifa was achieved only after some tense final moments against a team already reduced to 10 men.

And their success by the same score at Siena on Sunday was earned only through a dead ball, with Amauri heading home Brazilian compatirot Diego’s free-kick.

Since then Juve have found out that striker Vincenzo Iaquinta will be out for more than a month, putting more pressure on an under-performing team already missing Alessandro Del Piero.

More than once this season Juve have also been thankful to Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon for earning them a result.

Worse still, Sampdoria come into this game in rich goal-scoring form having destroyed Bologna 4-1 on Saturday.

Antonio Cassano was at his scintillating best at the weekend and although he didn’t score, and has struggled to

find the net himself this season, he was at the centre of everything creative from Sampdoria.

Buffon for one is wary of the team directly above them in the table Sampdoria sit second, two points behind Inter and two ahead of Juve.

“We came home from Siena with an important victory but we have to improve as quickly as possible,” he said.

“We’ve got nine crucial days now that will shape our season, both in the league and in Europe.

“We have to try to be attentive, concentrated and also confident. “(Sampdoria) are one of the most in-form teams of the moment, and right now they’re playing the most attractive football in Italy.”

Meanwhile improving AC Milan face a tough test away to another side currently on the right path, Napoli.

The southerners have won both games since former Sampdoria coach Walter Mazzarri took over from former Italy boss Roberto Donadoni. Milan,

though, are on a three-match winning streak and on each occasion have had to come from a goal down to do so.

However, vice-president Adriano Galliani insists they will work on their recent slow starts.

“I spoke with the president (Italy Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi) after the match in Verona (a 2-1 win over Chievo) and he told me the team is making him suffer too much,” said Galliani. “I asked his forgiveness and promised they’d make him suffer less in future.” All jokes apart, Milan have been somewhat fortunate to come away with three victories from games that could easily have ended all square, or even in defeat.

And it is only a matter of time before their tendency to concede early goals comes back to hurt them.

Inter are another team coming up against form opponents in Palermo, whose win over Udinese on Sunday left them fourth and believing they can challenge for a Champions League qualification position this season.

Ferguson accepts improper conduct charge Agence France Presse

LONDON - Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has accepted a charge of improper conduct following his comments on the fitness of referee Alan Wiley.

Ferguson criticised Wiley following his team’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Sunderland at Old Trafford on October 3, saying the official was not fit enough to keep up with the pace of the match.

Those comments infuriated many referees who claimed it was unwarranted and would leave a lasting stain on Wiley’s reputation.

The referees’ union Prospect subsequently called for Ferguson to be given a lengthy touchline ban.

Ferguson later apologised to Wiley, by saying: “I apologise to Mr Wiley for any personal embarrassment my comments may have caused and to the FA for going public with my views.

“In retrospect I accept that they could be deemed as expressing those views in an inappropriate form. It was never my intention to bring the focus of intense media interest on Mr Wiley.”

And Ferguson insisted he had never questioned Wiley’s impartiality,” adding: “I would wish it to be noted that I have always respected Mr Wiley’s in-

tegrity and that I did not state or imply that Mr Wiley is a bad referee, that he was in any way biased, that decisionmaking generally during the game was poor, or that he missed any key incident during the game.

“My only intention in speaking publicly was to highlight what I believe to be a serious and important issue in the game, namely that the fitness levels of referees must match the ever increasing demands of the modern game, which I hope will now be properly addressed through the appropriate formal channels.”

Many critics accused Ferguson of undermining the ‘Respect’ campaign of the English Football Association (FA), designed to encourage better behaviour towards officials at all levels of the game, and retired referee Jeff Winter said the Scot’s criticisms of Wiley were a “cowardly attack”.

Despite the furore, Ferguson had no qualms about criticising the performance of referee Andre Marriner after United’s 2-0 loss to arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield last weekend, questioning whether the official had “enough experience” to handle such a high-profile game.

The 67-year-old Ferguson has requested a personal hearing with the FA and a date has yet to be set.

Alonso set for ‘emotional’ Renault exit Fernando Alonso is aiming for a great result at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, in what the Spaniard says it will be an emotional farewell.

The two-time champion is competing with Renault for the final time before he moves to the Ferrari team, where Alonso is hoping to finish his career.

The Spanish driver, who won his two titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, admits it will be an emotional final race in Abu Dhabi this weekend.

“Absolutely, I would love to finish the season and my Renault career with a great result,” said Alonso. “It will be an emotional race because I have enjoyed so many special memories with this team and I am leaving behind a lot of friends.

“Renault is one of the great teams in Formula One and I look forward to fighting with them on the track in the years ahead.”

Team boss Bob Bell paid trib-

ute to Alonso, who he concedes will be missed by Renault.

“He’s made a huge contribution to the team, especially winning two world championships in 2005 and 2006 so he will be missed enormously,” said Bell.

“It’s often said that he is the best driver on the grid and I wouldn’t disagree with that so we’re understandably sad to see the end of our very successful relationship.

“But we’re also looking forward and we’re all delighted to be welcoming Robert Kubica to the team as I believe he will quickly show that he is of the same calibre as Fernando.

“He’s a strong team player, a great motivator and incredibly quick so we have plenty to look forward to as we enter a new era for the team.”

Hill still hopes British GP can be saved Agence France Presse

LONDON - Damon Hill believes it is still possible that a deal can be agreed with Formula One rights holder Bernie Ecclestone to preserve the future of the British Grand Prix.

Plans for Donington Park to take over from Silverstone, host of the last 23 British Grand Prix, appeared to collapse after track operators issued a statement Friday that a bond issue attempt to raise 135 million pounds (147 million euros) for circuit modernisation had proved unsuccessful.

Technically, Donington still has until midnight local time Tuesday to raise the reqiuired finance but Ecclestone had said their bid is “over”.

Although himself an Englishman, Ecclestone is no fan of the Silverstone circuit, like Donington situated in the English Midlands, and has made it clear that just because the British Grand Prix is one of Formula One’s oldest races it is not guaranteed an ongoing place in the sport’s calendar.

There are also reports that Silverstone chiefs are unhappy with the financial terms of the deal being offered by Ecclestone.

However, former world champion Hill, the president of Silverstone’s owners, the British Racing Drivers’ Club, told Tuesday’s Guardian: “I am hopeful something can be resolved. “There is a good chance we can sort something out soon.”

But Hill said he understood

Ecclestone could make more money by taking the race elsewhere. “He can get a value globally that is far in excess of what he can get for the UK. “We can respect that it is a difficult position for him to be in. He has to answer to his shareholders.

“Other countries are bound to pay a premium, but their revenue streams are more open than they are to a promoter in the UK,” he added.

“We feel the best thing to do is to designate a venue with a long enough term plan that you can tailor your investments,” explained Hill, whose later father Graham was also a Formula One world champion.

“There are options on the table.

There are discussions taking place and I’m hopeful something can be sorted out.”
