Nusa Dua, Bali- President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono officially opened the third Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) in Bali’s Nusa Dua resort on Thursday with a strong believe that democracy would pave the way for creating true peace and stability. Speaking before heads of delegates and observers from 71 countries attending the two-day forum taking place at Westin Hotel’s
Nusantara ballroom, President Yudhoyono said democracy could indeed bring peace and stability if it was implemented seriously and
consistently. However, the nations were challenged by the absence of a term ‘democracy had finished’ and how to enable democracy to promote peace and stability amid different ways of nations to resolve problems of peace, he said. The head of state also touched on Indonesia’s experience of adopting and practicing democracy since the
reformation era featured by the end of New Order regime era in 1998. President Yudhoyono said Indonesia had undergone fair, peaceful and transparent parliamentary and presidential elections, and was able to resolve crucial Aceh question through the democratic approach of “dialogue and peaceful resolutions.” Continued on page 6
Media’s Role in Responding to Crises Discussed in Bali Antara
Denpasar, Bali- Indonesian Press Council Chairman Bagir Manan said this year’s Bali Media Forum focused on how freely and responsibly the media was playing its role in dealing with such critical situations as war and acts of terrorism. “The forum will discuss the role of the media in facing such situa-
tions as war and terrorism, and other critical situations that a nation or people can undergo,” he told participants of the Bali Media Forum’ journalism workshop here Wednesday. Bagir Manan said he and his colleague Bambang Harimurti, senior Indonesian journalist, had recently expressed their views about the media’s role in responding to terrorism issues at an international
meeting in this resort island. “I noticed that Indonesian and foreign participants paid good attention to what the Indonesian Press Council had to say ... It is important to discuss the role and the responsibility of the media in facing and solving many crises in this forum,” he said. Indonesian media was expected not to become “part of the problems” the nation was facing. In-
stead, they were urged to pave the way for public to find solutions to the nation’s serious problems. Meanwhile, top security minister Djoko Suyanto, who was invited to be the forum’s keynote speaker, urged the journalists to get rid of reports that potentially caused anger and hatred despite difficulties they were facing in a crisis situation.
