SYDNEY – Australia’s opposition leader Tony Abbott Wednesday threatened to bring down Julia Gillard’s fragile minority government, one day after it was sworn in, by persuading independent MPs to support him. Neither leader won an outright majority at August 21 polls but Gillard’s ruling Labor party was returned to office after the prime minister managed to broker the support of minority lawmakers.

But Abbott said he was determined to lure two rural “kingmaker” independents to his side by convincing them that Labor’s planned national broadband Internet network was a mistake — a move that would smash Gillard’s hold on power. Continued on page 6

Eiffel Tower reopens after bomb threat, evacuation

Agence France Presse

PARIS – The Eiffel Tower has reopened a day after being evacuated because of a bomb threat from an anonymous caller. Paris police said Wednesday that no enhanced security measures were planned at France’s most visited monument, and an investigation has been handed over to the city prosecutor’s office. Explosives experts found nothing suspicious, and there was no immediate claim of responsibility. Parts of a second tourist hub — the Saint-Michel subway station near Notre Dame Cathedral — were briefly evacuated following a similar threat. An attack there in 1995 killed eight and injured scores of people. The head of France’s counterespionage agency was quoted over the weekend as saying the risk of an attack in France has never been higher.

Military officers stand guard after the evacuation of the Eiffel Tower and the park surrounding the Paris landmark following a bomb alert on September 14, 2010. A police officer said about 25,000 people were in the area at the time of the alert but added that they left calmly shortly before 9:00 pm (1900 GMT).
