Brigitte biography says young Macron wrote steamy book about their romance

PARIS - A new biography of French first lady Brigitte Macron says her husband penned a racy novel inspired by their early romance, when he was still a teenager and she his married drama teacher.

Brigitte Macron, wife of French President Emmanuel Macron.

President Emmanuel Macron, who turned 40 last month, fell for Brigitte during rehearsals for a school play at the Providence high school in Amiens, and defied his parents’ disapproval to pursue the relationship with a woman 24 years his senior. The book, “Brigitte Macron, The Liberated Woman”, to be published next week, quotes a family neighbour from Macron’s home town who says she typed up the 300-page manuscript. “It was a daring novel, a little bit smutty. Of course, the names were not the same but I think he needed to express what he was feeling at the time,” the unnamed neighbour is quoted as saying in excerpts published by Closer magazine. A spokeswoman for Macron’s office declined to comment. In the excerpts, the typist said she had not kept a copy of the novel - perhaps sparing the blushes of a leader who has promised to clean up French politics and says he wants to restore the dignity of the presidency.

But Macron would not be the only current French politician to try his hand at adult literature. In 2011, the prime minister, Edouard Philippe, co-authored ‘Dans l’ombre’ (In the shadows), a political thriller laced with steamy encounters. The finance minister, Bruno Le Maire, has written a novel entitled ‘Le Ministre’ (The Minister), which includes a steamy scene between the minister and his wife in Venice. Macron’s literary ambitions as a young man are well known and he wrote at least two unpublished works before authoring a book entitled “Revolution” during his election campaign. He told the weekly magazine Le Point last year that he had not sought a publisher for the earlier works “as I was not happy with them”. In a separate article for the same magazine, asked by French author Philippe Besson if he regretted not becoming a writer himself, Macron replied: “My life isn’t finished yet.” (rtr)

Redmayne calls for Hollywood change on gender equality LONDON - Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne said on Sunday that Hollywood’s campaign for gender equality had been “a long time coming” and that a “huge amount of change” was still needed. Speaking on the red carpet at the world premiere of his new animated film “Early Man”, the British star was asked about reports of a significant pay gap between Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams for reshoots on “All the Money in the World”.

“It’s incredibly important and I think that it’s been a long time coming, and I think the fact that last year three of the top films were female-led films is showing there is change but there is a huge amount of change needed yet. It’s sort of systemic I think,” Redmayne said. Redmayne and “Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams play alongside Tom Hiddleston in a new prehistoric-era adventure about inept cavemen from Oscarwinning director Nick Park. Williams, who has read the

scripts for the final season of “Game of Thrones”, told fans it would be worth the wait for the much-anticipated finale. “It’s going to be very very good, and it’s not going to come out for another year because it just takes long to make these incredible episodes that we’re doing and I am just so proud of the work everyone’s putting in this year. And honestly we have never done anything like this, it’s very special so it takes time but it’ll be worth it,” she said. (rtr)

Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan dies suddenly at 46

DUBLIN - Dolores O’Riordan, the lead singer of Irish rock group The Cranberries, died suddenly on Monday at the age of 46 during a recording trip to London, her publicist said. The cause of death was unclear. O’Riordan’s distinctive Irish lilt and yodel helped fuel the Cranberries’ rapid rise in the early 1990s with global hits “Linger”, “Dreams” and “Zombie.” The band went on to sell over 40 million records to become Ireland’s second-best-selling rock band after U2. Her three bandmates said in a tweet that they were devastated at the passing of an “extraordinary talent”. Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar in a statement described her as the “voice of her generation”. But a naturally reserved singer, O’Riordan often struggled with fame, leaving her native Ireland for several years to avoid the spotlight. During her separation from her husband in 2014, she was arrested for attacking a police officer. The singer’s publicist said she

died during a short recording trip to London, but declined to comment on the cause of death. “Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” the publicist, Lindsey Holmes, said in a statement. O’Riordan is survived by two daughters and a son. Police in London said a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead early on Monday at a hotel on Park Lane in central London. A spokesman said police were

continuing inquiries into the death, which was being treated as “unexplained”. The woman had yet to be formally identified, he said. METEORIC RISE The Cranberries shot to fame with their 1993 debut album “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?” after the hit song “Linger” was picked up by MTV. The band’s first three albums sold a combined 28 million copies. But the strain on O’Riordan, who was so shy that she performed with her

back to the audience during some early concerts, was also becoming clear, with the band cutting short a tour in 1996 citing exhaustion and disillusionment. O’Riordan left the Cranberries in 2003 and recorded two solo albums, before the band reformed in 2009. O’Riordan pleaded guilty to headbutting and spitting at an Irish police officer in 2014 following an alleged air rage incident. She later told an interviewer that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was struggling with the breakdown of her marriage. Last year the Cranberries cancelled a number of concerts in North America and Europe, saying O’Riordan was suffering from back problems. British pop band

Duran Duran, whose tour manager, Don Burton, was O’Riordan’s husband from 1994 until they separated in 2014 and was father to her children, said in a Twitter posting that they were “crushed” by the news. U2 said they were “floored” by the news in a statement posted on Twitter. “Out of the West came this storm of a voice -- she had such strength of conviction yet she could speak to the fragility in all of us,” the band said. Inflation target in 2018 downs, Bali to face tougher challenges DENPASAR - In 2017, Bali inflation rate was 3.32 percent. It is lower than the national figure of 3.61 percent. However in 2018, Bali faces a formidable challenge in controlling inflation. The Ministry of Finance lowered the inflation target from 4 percent to 3.5 percent. Bali itself targets the inflation of 3.5 percent plus minus one, which means the target range of inflation is 2.5 percent to 4.5 percent. Chief of Bali Representative Office of Bank Indonesia, Causa Iman Karana, said

that too low inflation target is not good because it is unattractive to investment, and the achievement of inflation encourages economic growth as well. “However, if inflation is too high, it is feared to affect the people’s purchasing power. Thus, we target 3.5 plus minus one,” he said. This inflation target is lower than the previous year as the government is optimistic with the performance of inflation control in each region, namely the Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) considered to be effective. “Now, the TPID has been established in each region. Why does TPID need to be established? Because the major-

ity of the national inflation makers are from the regions, so the control should be carried out in the regions,” he explained. If mapped out nationally, Bali belongs to green zone. In other words, the achievement of inflation is controlled, while some other regions are in red and orange zone. Sometimes a region experiences a force majeur condition that results in high inflation. For instance, Manado was once hit by floods and Jogjakarta experienced volcanic eruption where these are then affecting inflation. Inflation is also used as a reference for raising employee salaries and determining provincial minimum wage

(UMP), including the budget. Inflation of Bali in 2017 lay in 3.32. This figure is still within the target range set at the beginning of the year, namely 4 percent plus minus one. This means the lowest is 3 percent and the highest is 5 percent. This yearly inflation is also lower than national inflation at 3.61 percent. Overall, the inflation of Bali in 2017 is influenced by volatile food and administered price. “What surprising is the increase in the price of rice in December, while the administered price is mostly contributed by the increase in electricity tariff and the increase in tobacco taxes,” he explained. Other than decreasing inflation target, Bali in particular also faces tough challenges such as the reduced planting area that will affect inflation. In terms of production, it will also be affected. Inflation from the volatile food side is feared to increase the price of rice and onion. In addition, an increase in tourist visits will also affect the demand for food, electricity and fuel. A rising demand will affect the supply so the price becomes higher. Electricity tariff is also estimated to rise as well as weather factors that affect agricultural production. The existence of tourist visits will have an impact on food provision. On the other hand, the International Monetary Fund (IMF)—World Bank (WB) annual meeting is expected to drive the economic growth of Bali that will also cause the demand to rise. “Indeed, the challenge in 2018 is quite difficult. However, we have a solid TPID,” he said. Chairman of the TPID previously occupied by deputy governor will be authorized to governor. It is in accordance with directives of President Jokowi. According to him, though the challenges of controlling inflation are hard, the TPID Bali has a solid team and strong coordination. (kmb42)

Tourist attraction operators urged to apply non-cash transactions TABANAN - The efforts to increase revenue and transparency, all the transactions are now using e-money system, no longer directed to do it in cash. This also applies to entrance tickets to tourist attractions. Local government encourages to make ticket transactions in e-ticketing or e-billing system. In the future, tourists do not have to pay a ticket, but simply bring a card having contained a nominal value. Head of the Tabanan Tourism

Office, I Made Yasa, encouraged three tourist objects with high income sources to implement it such as Tanah Lot, Ulundanu Beratan and Jatiluwih. “In the future, noncash transaction is expected to be applied thoroughly in the tourism sector to improve the efficiency of financial transactions,” he said. Related to the program, he said that so far it remains in the stage of dissemination by Bank Indonesia (BI) and banking about the

benefits of non-cash transaction implementation. “So far, it has not been discussed further about the continuation of cooperation later and application,” he explained. Nevertheless, he admitted there are several advantages of implementing this system. In addition to speeding up payment process, it also facilitates payment without having to carry cash. “Crime rate can also be minimized such as theft or robbery because it does not need

to bring enough cash but with a card only,” he said. Related to the implementation of non-cash transactions, Made Yasa said the Tourism Office just encourages the tourist object to apply it because the preparation of the device and human resources are the responsibility of the local management agency. “We only help promote the tourist object,” he said. In Tabanan district, the imple-

mentation of non-cash transactions has been long in discourse at Tanah Lot attraction since 2015. Until now, there are still various preparations before it can actually be applied. Indeed, the e-ticketing application was planned to be implemented in 2018 to optimize the regionally generated revenue (PAD) from ticket sales. Moreover, Tanah Lot is the highest contributor to PADA in Tabanan. (kmb28)

No pedal to the metal in GM’s planned self-driving Cruise AV car DETROIT - General Motors Co is seeking U.S. government approval for a fully autonomous car - one without a steering wheel, brake pedal or accelerator pedal - to enter the automaker’s first commercial ride-sharing fleet in 2019, executives said.

For passengers who cannot open doors, the Cruise AV - a rebranded version of GM’s Chevrolet Bolt EV - has even been designed to perform that task. It will have other accommodations for hearing and visually impaired customers. This will be one of the first self-driving vehicles in commercial passenger service and among the first to do away with manual controls for steering, brakes and throttle. What is the driver’s seat in the Bolt EV will become the front left passenger seat in the Cruise AV, GM said. Company President Dan Ammann told reporters GM had filed on Thursday for government approval to deploy the “first production-ready vehicle designed from the start without a steering wheel, pedals or other unnecessary manual controls.” GM is part of a growing throng of vehicle manufacturers, technology companies and tech startups seeking to develop so-called robo-taxis over the next three years in North America, Europe and Asia. Most of those companies have one or more partners. On Friday, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed GM had petitioned for approval to operate up to 2,500 vehicles without steering wheels or human drivers. “Safety is the (Transportation) department’s top priority. The department will review this petition and give it careful consideration,” the agency said in a statement. Ford Motor Co said on Tuesday it will partner with delivery service Postmates Inc as the automaker starts testing ways to transport people, food and packages this spring in its self-driving cars, which are being developed by Ford’s Argo unit. Other companies, from Uber Technologies Inc to

Alphabet Inc’s Waymo, have been testing self-driving vehicle prototypes in limited ride sharing applications, but have been less explicit than GM in announcing plans for commercial robo-taxi services. GM executives said the automaker has asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to allow 16 alterations to existing vehicle safety rules - such as having an airbag in what would normally be the driver’s seat, but without a steering wheel - to enable the deployment of the Cruise AV. The automaker would then need to obtain similar approval from individual U.S. states. GM executives said seven U.S. states already allow the alterations sought by the automaker. In other states - including those that stipulate a car must have a licensed human driver - GM will work with regulators to change or get a waiver from existing rules. The company declined to identify the first states in which it plans to launch the vehicle or say when it would begin testing. GM wants to control its own self-driving fleet partly because of the tremendous revenue potential it sees in selling related services, from e-commerce to infotainment, to consumers riding in those vehicles. At a Nov. 30 briefing in San Francisco, GM’s Ammann told investors the lifetime revenue generation of one of its self-driving cars could eventually be “several hundred thousands of dollars.” That compares with the $30,000 on average that GM collects today for one of its vehicles, mostly derived from the initial sale. GM’s Cruise AV is equipped with the automaker’s fourth-generation self-driving software and hardware, including 21 radars, 16 cameras and five lidars - sensing devices that use laser light to help autonomous cars “see” nearby objects and obstacles. The Cruise AV will be able to operate in hands-free mode only in premapped urban areas. GM’s prototype self-driving vehicles have been developed in San Francisco by Cruise Automation, the onetime startup that GM acquired in March 2016 for a reported $1 billion. (rtr)

Less competitive, interest to work in cruise line declines

IBP/net

The plants have provided new jobs in a province with one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the country.

Solar steam powers homes – and new jobs – in South Africa

SEMARAPURA — Public interest in Klungkung district to work on cruise ships tends to decline every year. Tight competition coupled with salary that is not longer as fantastic as before becomes the cause of it. Head of the Klungkung Industry and Manpower Agency, I Gede Kusumajaya, admitted it on Sunday (Jan. 14). This official from Selisihan village, Klungkung, revealed that according to the 2017 data, the number of cruise ship workers amounting to 322 people. They are mostly young people who work in the food and beverage, room service and so forth. “But lately, the number of departure tends to go down because the income is no longer the same as it used to be, and the competition is getting tougher. Many citizens of other countries are also working like that,” he said. Increasing interest even occurs in the departure to Turkey as migrant workers. By 2017, there are 400 people working in spa industry. As the information received, the income obtained each month is around IDR 7 million. It is higher than the income while working in the region. “This is one of the reasons to work there,” he said. Prior to departing, Kusuma-

CAPE TOWN - South Africa may still get most of its energy from coal, but in the country’s sunny Northern Cape province, a different electricity source is taking hold: solar steam. A Spanish renewable energy company has opened three thermal solar plants – which use the sun’s heat to create electricity - in the province. The plants - which use sun-heated salt to drive turbines produce enough electricity to provide power to just short of a million people, or almost the province’s entire population, according its operators. That represents an important shift in a country that suffered power shortages as recently as 2015, but that now has excess power to sell to neighbouring southern African countries. Just as important, the plants have provided new jobs in a province with one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the country, at more than 40 percent, according to U.N. officials. They recognised the clean-energy project at climate change talks in Bonn in November as a creative model for bringing scarce private cash into renewable energy projects in Africa. The first solar steam plant – KaXu Solar One, opened in 2015 in Pofadder – provided about 80 new permanent jobs, and about 1,700 temporary jobs, according to Sarah Marchildon, a spokeswoman for the U.N. climate change secretariat’s Momentum for Change initiative. The other two plants, including Xina Solar One, completed last year in Uppington, on the banks of the Orange River, have created another 45 permanent and 1,300 temporary jobs, she said. “The region is now benefiting from stable, clean energy, and we are happy to have played a role in helping to solve South Africa’s electricity needs and improving the nation’s sustainability and energy security,” said Gerardo Rodriguez Pagano, the general director of Abengoa South Africa, which developed the plants. (rtr)

jaya said the migrant workers have already owned previous work experience. Some workers also attend training for approximately two months. “This is facilitated by the Vocational Training Institute (LPK). They do not depart directly,” he explained. Working overseas is considered as one of the alternatives to reduce unemployment. Nevertheless, it is not the only way. District government continues to make other efforts by intensifying empowerment through the creation of new entrepreneurs rolling out this year. The program also targets elderly, people with disabilities, women and migrant workers with problems. They are taught with business adjusted to the potential existing at each village. This measure is also important to reduce job search competition in one sector, in addition to generating job opportunities. “This program has been running. We want these new entrepreneurs to create job opportunities for unemployment,” he said. Job fair implementation is still used as a solution. The program opens thousands of job opportunities of different types. “Job fair remains to become an alternative to reduce unemployment,” he added. (kmb45)

Head of the Badung Tourism Office, I Made Badra, said the feasibility study will be conducted this year. This program is an effort of equalization of tourism growth in North Badung. “We hope the cable car from Tukad Bangkung Bridge to Nungnung waterfall will become an icon for tourism in the North,” said Made Badra, on Sunday (Jan. 14). According to him, with the support of agro-tourism having grown over this time, the cable car tourism project will be able to draw domestic and foreign tourists. “In addition to agro-tourism, supporting facilities will be built along the track of cable car, so tourists can come down and enjoy it. “This year, feasibility study will be held soon to find out whether it is feasible or not,” he said. He said the feasibility study estimated to spend budget of IDR 500 million will soon be bid. “The feasibility study is being prepared in the main regional budget 2018. The team is preparing the terms of reference (KAK) and the auction process at the Procurement Unit or ULP,” he said. Separately, a member of Badung House of Representatives from Petang electoral district, Nyoman Suka, admitted to encourage the program to be realized soon as the North Badung requires a special tourism icon. “All this time, there has been the Tukad Bangkung Bridge which is well known to tourists. Thus, it will encourage the development of this tourism

whether it is a cable car or others for the icon,” he said. With the existence of tourism supporting facilities, this legislator expected the tourism growth can be enjoyed evenly. “This is a real form of government support to the Northern Badung. So far, the tourism development is more rapid in Southern Badung,” he concluded. As reported, Deputy Regent of Badung, Ketut Suiasa, conveyed the development of communitybased tourism such as the tourism in North Badung region will be begun with the feasibility study on cable car construction to create an attractive new tourism icon. Besides, it is also meant to evenly distribute of tourism pies and to equalize the South Badung and North Badung. This is an additional tourist destination, especially in North Badung, that can create multiplier effect on the economic growth of the community. In 2018, some activities have also been designed in the form of preparation of tourism village planning arrangement at Bongkasa village, Belok village, Munggu village and Baha village. Besides, the government has designed the activities of village tourism arrangement, among others at Bongkasa Pertiwi tourism village, Sangeh tourism village, Carangsari tourism Village, Pangsan tourism village, Petang tourism village, Pelaga tourism village and Mengwi village, Penarungan and Kuwum in Mengwi subdistrict. This year, there is also arrangement plan to Penikit hot spring tourist attraction as well as preparation of feasibility study of the cable car tourist attraction on agro Pelaga village as well as the development of special interest tourism. The total budget for planning and arranging the tourism village in 2018 reaches IDR 20.7 billion. (kmb27)

Sustainability threatened

Airbus wins 2017 order race after last-minute sales spree

Forest in Kintamani made into waste disposal site

BANGLI —

Garbage disposal in protected forest areas in Kintamani is still quite rampant. It is evident from the many piles of garbage found in a number of forest points. Although the conditions threatening the sustainability of forests have lasted long enough, until now there has never been a decisive action imposed by the government to the unscrupulous litterers. As observation on Monday (Jan. 15), one of the forest points where found many piles of garbage is located right in front of SDN 1 Kintamani elementary school. Not only organic waste, inorganic waste such as plastic also accumulates in the forest area. Large number of garbage piles in the forest indirectly indicates if the garbage disposal in the forest has been going on for quite long time. Subdistrict head of Kintamani, Wayan Dirgayusa, when asked for his confirmation last Monday afternoon did not dismiss the number of forest areas are taken advantage as landfill. From his observations so far, he mentioned the forest areas having been mostly

used to dispose of garbage are at Gelagah Linggah, roadside of Belancan village, near the market of Katung village and opposite the mosque. Moreover, in the forest area directly in front of the office of Kintamani subdistrict head is admitted to have been a garbage dump. “The one in front of the Kintamani subdistrict head office has shifted far back (into the forest area),” he explained. Dirgayusa claimed not to know exactly who disposes of and where the garbage comes from. According to him, all this time the Kintamani residents have high awareness of preserving the forest. It is evident from the involvement of residents in forest cleanup activities in front of the subdistrict

Results of research at 15 Geopark supporting villages

Some factors found to trigger poverty in Bangli

BANGLI — District government of Bangli in 2017 has done a research related to the cause of high poverty rate in Bangli. In accordance with the results of the research at 15 supporting villages of Geopark Kintamani, several factors are found to trigger the high poverty rate in Bangli. Some of these factors are lack of education, health facilities and infrastructure. Head of the Bangli Social Agency, Nengah Sukarta, explained on Monday (Jan. 15) the research was conducted by the Bangli government in cooperation with Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha). The study was conducted in 15 geopark supporting villages. Selection of the 15 villages as location sample of the research because they have quite a lot of poverty pockets. On the other hand, the villages belong to tourism areas. He disclosed that based on the results of research presented in the seminar recently, it is known that several factors triggered the high poverty rate in Bangli. Firstly, he said the poverty in Bangli remains high

because of the low level of education owned by community. Quite a lot of people dropped out of school. Secondly, minimal health facilities also contribute to poverty rate. Thirdly, the poverty still happens because people are difficult to access the road and clean water infrastructure. With regard to road infrastructure such as inadequate road, Sukartana said, it often causes their crops to plummet. In the meantime, amid such conditions, people still have to buy their life necessities at high price. “Difficulty of people to get clean water also affects the poverty rate in Bangli,” he explained. Sukarta said the results of the research carried out in 2017 have been publicized through seminar. Now, the results will be used as the basic reference for creating poverty alleviation programs in Bangli. He said that poverty alleviation in Bangli will be carried out by using the concept of tat tvam asi. In appropriate with this concept, poverty will be overcome by mutual cooperation of the government and society. (kmb40)

Garbage is seen on the side of Kintamani Forest. office some time ago. Probably, the piles of garbage were disposed by outsiders. Regarding the rampant garbage disposal in the forest areas so far, Dirgayusa claimed that his authority has been quite often to provide education for the community including to local markets. However, after seeing the current conditions, he admitted that his

On Shivaratri Day, Mount Agung erupts again

Smoke soars to 2,500 meters high to Northeast AMLAPURA — Coinciding with Shivaratri Day, Mount Agung erupted again on Monday (Jan. 15). The eruption with the smoke altitude of 2,500 meters is the third eruption in 2018. The eruptive cloud of smoke tended to move Eastward and Northeastward. Head of Volcanic Monitoring Post at Rendang village, Karangasem, Dewa Mertayasa, revealed that Mount Agung erupted again at 07:23 Local Time. Its gray smoke column with medium pressure reached a height of 2,500 meters above the peak. He said within the past six hours before the eruption there was once shallow volcanic earthquake, twice deep volcanic earthquake with 3-12 mm amplitude and continuous tremors. “The clouds of smoke tended to move northeastward and eastward with duration of ash exposure for 130 seconds,” he said. Dewa Mertayasa said although the eruption occurred again, the Volcano Observatory Notice for

Aviation (VONA) is still orange and not disturbing the flights at Ngurah Rai International Airport as the eruption does not occur continuously. “So far, the flight is still safe because the volcanic ashes still belong to medium category. The ashes did not reach Ngurah Rai Airport as the wind blow is not hard,” he added. According to Dewa Mertayasa, the potential of subsequent eruption remains to occur considering the activities of Mount Agung are still quite high. However, his agency cannot ensure when the eruption will happen again. Before the eruption, it is usually preceded by deep and shallow volcanic earthquakes and continuous tremors. The alert status remains in level IV or warning. People around the Mount Agung and tourists are recommended to avoid climbing and any activities within the danger zone within the area of the crater of Mount Agung and throughout the area within the radius of 6 km. The predicted hazard zone is dynamic

and continues to be evaluated and can change any time following the latest observation data of Mount Agung’s activities. “The 12 villages within the radius of 6 km consisting of Nawakerti village, Jungutan village, Buana Giri village, Sebudi village, Besakih village, Datah village, Padang village, Tulamben village, Dukuh village, Kubu village, Baturinggit village and Ban village must remain to evacuate. Meanwhile, people living outside the radius of 6 km can still do their activities as usual but to keep vigilance,” he said. In the meantime, the Secretary of Pasemeton Jaga Baya (Pasebaya) of Mount Agung circumference, I Wayan Suara Arsana, revealed the eruption caused a number of villages to be exposed to volcanic ashes. The affected villages are Tribuana village, Datah village, Kesimpar village and Dukuh village. “The intensity of ash exposure is still thin,” said Suara Arsana. (kmb41)

PARIS - Frenetic selling in the closing weeks of 2017 saw Airbus overhaul Boeing’s recent lead in the global jet market to win their annual order contest for the fifth year running, but doubts remain over the future of its flagship A380. The European planemaker said on Monday net orders after cancellations rose 52 percent to 1,109 aircraft in 2017, placing it ahead of Boeing’s 912 net orders. Airbus posted 1,229 gross or unadjusted orders compared with Boeing’s 1,053. Airbus confirmed it had met its core 2017 target of more than 700 deliveries by releasing 718 jets to customers in 2017, up 4 percent from the previous year despite industrial delays. Boeing remained the world’s largest jetmaker for the sixth year running with a record total of 763 deliveries. Planemaking chief Fabrice Bregier said engine supplier Pratt & Whitney had turned the corner on delays that had disrupted single-aisle aircraft output, and predicted close to 800 deliveries in 2018. He predicted that a record backlog of more than 7,000 aircraft, now on order and waiting to be built, would allow Airbus to lift deliveries beyond those of Boeing in 2020. Boeing has questioned whether all of the airplanes sold by its competitor will be delivered due to speculative business. December’s sales breakthrough focused mainly on the bread and butter of Airbus’s portfolio, the medium-haul A320 family, which competes with Boeing’s best-selling 737 series. Some industry sources have questioned whether Airbus was forced to slash prices in order to bring in the record harvest of more than 800 orders in December, which included the sale of 430 jets via one U.S. investor. However, sales chief John Leahy said the surge reflected stronger than expected demand, after airlines closed the year with robust traffic data, amid rising stock markets and economic growth. “The market is just stronger everywhere,” Leahy told reporters on a conference call. In the wide-body or long-haul segment, by contrast, Airbus saw its market share against Boeing slump to 25 percent from 51 percent the year before. That included no new orders and two cancellations for the A380 superjumbo, whose future is under threat due to low sales. Boeing also suffered cancellations for its competing 747. Bregier confirmed plans, first reported by Reuters, to reduce A380 production to as few as six aircraft per year, compared with 15 deliveries last year. nL8N1OB4H2 Airbus currently plans to lower output to eight a year. Airbus is talking to the main A380 customer Emirates about buying about three dozen more of the planes in order to secure future production. But Leahy confirmed a Reuters report that Airbus was looking at shutting the A380 if the Emirates deal - already postponed at last November’s Dubai Airshow - fell through. In that case, Airbus would have “no choice” but to close production, he said. (rtr)

SYDNEY - Rising temperatures at Australia’s Great Barrier Reef are causing more green turtles to be born female, which could lead to the species dying out, a new scientific study has found. As the gender of green turtles is determined by temperature, the hotter weather caused by climate change induces warmer incubations of eggs, and that has led to a greater number of female hatchlings. The study published last week revealed that more than 99 percent of the juvenile and sub adult population on the northern part of the reef are female, and 69 percent are female on the southern reef. The two populations are genetically distinct. “We’re now seeing on those northern beaches virtually no males being born,” said WWF-

Australia Chief Executive Dermot O’Gorman. “That really rings alarm bells for the long-term survival of those northern green turtle population.” The study was carried out by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, California State University, and Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) Australia. O’Gorman said urgent measures were needed to tackle climate change. The Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection have been testing various measures to lower the temperature

of the sand, where the turtles lay their eggs. Options include providing shade or inducing artificial rain to cool the beach, said chief scientist Colin Limpus. “Protecting some of the big breeding males from threats like nets and bycatch is going to be really important going on into the future as well,” said O’Gorman. The Great Barrier Reef, covering 348,000 square km (134,000 square miles), was listed as a World Heritage site in 1981 as the most extensive and spectacular coral reef ecosystem on the planet. (rtr)

China’s Yunnan to inject capital in firm that missed shadow loan payments - sources

BEIJING - A Yunnan state-owned investment company that defaulted last month on two trust loans has secured financing to repay those loans and is set to get 2 billion yuan in additional equity capital from the provincial government. Yunnan State-Owned Capital Operation Co, fully owned by the provincial government’s state asset regulator, obtained the cash to repay the loans through one-month loans from three institutions, Liu Gang, the company’s chairman, told Reuters in a telephone interview. with the loan repayments. On Dec 15, Yunnan Capital missed payments of more than 900 million yuan, representing principal and interest, that it had borrowed through two trust products issued by the Harbin-based Zhongrong International Trust, the two sources said on Monday. The missed payments were the first known default of off-balance sheet, or shadow, loans borrowed by local governments, they said. The case is closely being watched by investors and lenders concerned that China may be entering “a year of defaults” for off-balance sheet local government borrowing, one of the sources said. The government capital injection to help the company repay loans, if it moves forward, could also indicate potential violations of the central government’s ban that prevents local governments from providing implicit guarantees for local government financing vehicle (LGFV)

The loans will be repaid on Tuesday, Liu said, while declining to name the institutions providing the funds. The Yunnan provincial government also is set to inject 2 billion yuan in the state-owned investment company, which defaulted on the two trust loans last month. Those missed payments came amid growing fears that financing vehicles used by local governments throughout China, often for vanity projects that ran up large amounts of debt, may start to default this year. Liu said Yunnan Capital was a platform to manage provincial state assets and carry out reforms at provincial government-owned companies. He said the anticipated capital injection had nothing to do with the loan repayments. But, according to an internal memo from the trust company seen by Reuters and two sources with knowledge of the matter, the capital injection promised by the provincial government was to be used to help

debt, they added. Yunnan Capital’s Liu confirmed the government’s capital injection plan but denied any relationship between it and the loan repayments. He said he did not consider his company to be a LGFV. “Last week, Yunnan held four local governments accountable and punished a bunch of people for providing illegal guarantees - an activity that is not in line with the spirit of the central government,” he said. He said the 2 billion yuan capital injection from the government was aimed at boosting the company’s capital strength and was pending budget approval by the local National People’s Congress, the provincial legislature, which will convene later this month. Ivan Chung, head of credit research and analysis for Greater China at Moody’s Investors Service, said he expects the number of defaults by local government financing vehicles to increase in 2018 and 2019. Thousands

of financing vehicles have been created by local governments in recent years to fund large state-driven projects and hit economic growth targets. They have taken on trillions of yuan in debt from banks, the bond market and shadow lenders such as trust firms, helping local governments bypass Beijing’s limits on borrowing. Much of the debts come with implicit local government backing. Beijing has increasingly cracked down on such debt-raising activities, stressing that it will not bail out local governments that run into financial difficulties. One central bank researcher said recently that some cities should be allow to go bankrupt like Detroit. Since late 2014, the central government has tried to address the situation of surging local government debt by revising the Budget Law, launching a municipal bond market, and stripping local government guarantees from debts held by local government vehicles. At its annual economic conference in December, China’s top leadership decided to take concrete measures to strengthen the regulation of local government debt in 2018 as policymakers look to rein in a massive debt pile and reduce financial risks facing

the economy. The finance ministry didn’t immediately respond to a faxed request seeking comment. Zhongrong Trust didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. In September, Fitch said the first defaults on public bonds by Chinese local government financing vehicles were becoming more likely. However, widespread defaults were a “tail risk” as the authorities relied on local government investment - supported by local vehicles - to hit economic growth targets, Fitch said. In simple terms, a tail risk refers to an event that has a small probability of occurring. Fitch estimated that 4 trillion yuan in bonds issued domestically by local government financing vehicles since the new Budget Law came into effect in 2015 remained outstanding by September. The amount was equivalent to 5.4 percent of China’s gross domestic product. “The central government’s attitude is that the local governments are not allowed to provide guarantees,” said Chung, adding that the governments “have some space.” “The question is do local governments have the resources to rescue the next defaulted state-owned company or LGFV?” (rtr)

Remote Village Fashionista

Balinese Barbie Bridging Barriers

Like many tourists in Bali, Barbie is a world traveller. She has visited countries the world over, but what many people may not know is that she loves to shop for clothes in Bali. However because of her particular measurements, there is only one store where she can buy clothes here and it is located in the small village of Songan on Lake Batur Kintamani, not too far from Hulun Danau Batur Temple. Talented designer and seamstress Putu Restiti has been making clothes for Barbie for almost ten years now. She first started making these miniature fashion pieces after a local nonprofit organization came see how she was living and gave her and her sister (who has since passed away) a couple of barbies to play with. While girls the world over have the unrealistic dream of growing up to be like Barbie, these two young sparks instead felt inspired to make this strange doll look more like them and the women around them. What started out as a fun game between sisters soon developed into a full time job for Putu with orders and attention flooding in from far beyond her remote village. Putu’s mother is a kebaya (traditional Balinese woman’s blouse) seamstress so Putu uses the left over material from these blouses to create fancy dresses for Barbie. She explained that she is inspired by this beautiful fabric but also by images that she finds online. She creates her own unique designs and sometimes special orders for particular garments,

but always with a Balinese flair. Putu was born with deformities which meant that her legs never developed making it hard for her to get around and even harder to make friends as a child. However as she explained: “i was not about to let that stop be from using my hands. I love coming up with design ideas and challenging myself to make these tiny garments. I mostly sell to foreigners who love Barbie, but also to some locals who often have ‘knock-off’ Barbies that are slightly different”. Sometimes people from Denpasar will come to her with real Barbies and either have a dress made or buy one of the many designs she has on hand. She even makes clothes for Ken dolls and the matching outfits she makes are enough to make any couple want to start wearing matching outfits. When asked whether she has thought of selling these clothes directly to Matel Inc. the company that makes Barbie, Putu said that she has discussed the idea with them but they decided that it wasn’t a good match because her clothes are too fancy for the Matel brand who tend

to make much less intricate clothes for Barbie. Matel however was so impressed with her workmanship and creativity that they sometimes send her accessories like sequins to use in her creations. Putu does not have any staff helping her make these pint sized high fashion items so she cannot produce in large volume yet. She explained that she just really likes making these clothes and sometimes makes simpler versions that she sells to kids in her neighbourhood for a reduced price. This passion of hers not only provides Putu with a fun activity and a little extra income, but it has also served as a bridge for her to develop relationships with the people in her community who might not have even met her otherwise. Fashion has a special way of bringing people together and these unique Balinese style Barbie clothes have shown that the craftsmanship and beauty for which Bali is known for the world over can take myriad forms, and can even be adapted to something as distinctly foreign as Barbie. At glance, the vegetable of star fruit leaf (jukut don belimbing) or often called as lawar of star fruit leaf is usually presented in ceremonial events in Bali. By and large, the presentation is divided into two, namely for the offerings to God through oblations as well as presented through buffet invitation. The jukut don belimbing is commonly served with other menus processed by local society. Invitees can pick out and choose their preferred menus. Unfortunately, this star fruit leaf is only liked by certain people. Children are less interested because it’s slightly bitter. However, for adults this menu is very tasty. For people on the Island of the Gods, the star fruit leaf is taken advantage as a vegetable ingredient as it is quite tasty. Other than being easy to get, this leaf is also good for digestion. However, the star fruit leaf used is not arbitrary, but the young one (not too old and not too young). Besides, it does not belong to the type of star fruit having sweet fruit, but the fruit is sour and whitish. Lately, the star fruit leaf vegetable is also served at hotel, but has not something to do with ceremonial activities. In a chef competition, the star fruit leaf vegetable also becomes one of the contested menus. Of course, this vegetable has been processed in a modern way, so that it can be enjoyed by the tongue from various regions and even countries. The ingredients used to make this vegetable are star fruit leaf, coconut milk and boiled pork or chicken blood. Meanwhile, the spices in use include onion, garlic, shrimp, coriander, chili, ginger, pepper, aromatic ginger, candlenut, palm sugar, salt and a few pieces of lime leaves. How to prepare it? At first, finely wash the star fruit leaf whose number is tailored to the needs. After that, boil until cooked and then squeeze the leaf to reduce its water. It is also meant to eliminate its bitterness as well as make the leaf tenderer. The spices are divided into two. A portion is used to make fine base genep (complete spice) and another portion to make raw spice. All the ingredients to make base genep are cut and then grounded or pureed by blender, so it becomes smooth. Then, fry it until cooked. The other spices namely onion and chili are sliced ??thin without frying. Next, prepare a basin and put the base genep into it along with coconut milk and boiled blood. After that, mix them well. Put sliced red onion and chili and add the thinly sliced ??brown sugar. Put the boiled star fruit leaf and then mix together well. Add lime leaves having been sliced ??thinly and salt (to taste). Stir again evenly and now it is ready to serve. (kmb)

Philippines says hazardous volcano eruption possible ‘within weeks or days’

MANILA - The Philippines’ chief volcanologist warned on Monday of a possible hazardous eruption at Mount Mayon “within weeks or even within days”, as magma continued to pile up at the summit of the Southeast Asian country’s most active volcano.

The 2,462-metre (8,077-foot) high volcano, a tourist attraction in central Albay province because of its nearperfect cone shape, spewed ash and burning mud and rocks over the past two days, forcing more than 3,000 residents to evacuate from nearby villages. It showed a bright crater glow on Sunday, signifying lava had started to flow from the crater. Manila’s airport authorities said airline Cebu Pacific had cancelled flights to nearby Legazpi City for a second day on Monday, citing bad weather. Mayon’s most destructive eruption was in February 1841, when lava buried a town and killed 1,200 people. It last erupted in 2014, spewing lava and forcing thou-

sands of people to evacuate. Renato Solidum, chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), described Mayon’s current activity as a non-explosive magmatic eruption, but he would not rule out a more dangerous volcanic explosion in coming days. “What we would like to see is if there would be enough pressure, gas pressure for the next magma that would go up,” he told ABS-CBN News Channel. Phivolcs raised the volcano alert to level 3 late on Sunday after detecting the lava flow. Solidum said raising the alert to level 4, under which the danger zone would be expanded and a hazardous eruption could happen within a few days, depended on how Mayon behaved in the next few hours. Level 5 indicates an eruption is in progress. People have been advised to stay away from a 6-km (4-mile) radius Permanent Danger Zone and a 7-km Expanded Danger Zone on the volcano’s southern flank. Myanmar says temporary camp will house 30,000 Rohingya targeted for repatriation

YANGON - Myanmar is building a camp to temporarily house 30,000 Rohingya Muslims targeted for repatriation after fleeing violence in Rakhine State, state media reported on Monday, as Myanmar and Bangladesh meet to discuss how to implement a repatriation deal. More than 650,000 Rohingya have headed across the border to Bangladesh after a sweeping Myanmar army counteroffensive in response to Rohingya militant attacks on Aug. 25, 2017. The crackdown has been described by the United States and U.N. as ethnic cleansing, which Myanmar repeatedly rejects. Officials from Myanmar and Bangladesh meet on Monday to discuss a repatriation deal signed on Nov. 23. The meeting in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyitaw, is the first for a joint working group set up to hammer out the details of the agreement. The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said a camp in Hla Po Khaung in northern Rakhine will be a temporary transition camp for people who are to be “accepted systematically” for

repatriation. “The 124-acre Hla Po Khaung will accommodate about 30,000 people in its 625 buildings,” the newspaper said, adding that some 100 buildings will be completed by end of January. Aung Tun Thet, chief coordinator of Myanmar’s Union Enterprises for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement and Development, told Reuters that the camp in Hla Po Khaung will be a “transition place” for Rohingya refugees before they are repatriated to their “place of origin” or the nearest settlement to their place of origin. “We will try to accept all of those who are coming back to Myanmar,” he said, adding that to verify returnees’ residency, they will be sent to assessment camps in Taungpyoletwei or Ngakhuya before they are moved to the Hla Po Khaung camp. Soe Aung, permanent secretary of Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, said returnees will spend “at least one or two months” in Hla Po Khaung before their new homes are built. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s stock exchange held a minute silence at the start of trading on Tuesday for more than 70 people injured when a mezzanine floor in the building suddenly collapsed. No deaths have been reported from the collapse on Monday but dozens of people, many university students visiting the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), are being treated in hospitals. Bourse officials said the rest of the building complex was operating normally. “Main structure wise, this building has no problem,” said Samsul Hidayat, a director at the IDX. “We have blocked the mezzanine floor.” The high-rise building, constructed in the late 1990s, is part of a two-tower complex in the heart of Jakarta’s financial district and houses dozens of offices including the World Bank. It was the target of a car bombing by Islamist militants in September 2000. Police have ruled out a bomb as a cause of Monday’s collapse. The second tower was reopened for business on Tuesday, with the parts of the floor that were still intact propped up by makeshift columns. Some employees felt nervous about going to work. “I am so wary. I work underneath the bridge,” said Nur Septi

Febriananda, a receptionist, referring to another part of the same mezzanine floor that fell. A police forensics team was combing through the rubble for clues as to why the walkway, which overlooks the main lobby, crumpled without warning, said Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono. Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan has ordered an “audit” of the building, which was last inspected by authorities in May, 2017. A group of nearly 100 university students were on the mezzanine floor when it gave way, and many fell one storey to the lobby. Several students are being treated for broken bones and concussions. Safety standards are often loosely enforced in Indonesia. Last year, a fire that ripped through a fireworks factory on the outskirts of Jakarta killed around 50 people in one of the country’s worst industrial accidents. A police investigation found multiple safety violations. The exchange was operating normally on Tuesday, with the year’s first listing going ahead as scheduled. Telecommunication construction company PT LCK Global Kedaton Tbk, debuted its shares, which jumped 50 percent in early trade. (rtr)

“Most of the building...was on fire,” the city fire department said on its website. “The Bahari Museum is being cooled down,” it said on its official Twitter account. “The cause of the fire is still unknown.” The buildings used to be warehouses owned by the Dutch East India Company and were used to store highly sought-

after spices and other commodities like tea and coffee. In 1976, 31 years after Indonesia declared independence from the Dutch, the buildings were turned into a museum displaying nautical vessels, tools, maps and other items commemorating the fact that Indonesia is an archipelago of over 17,000 islands and that its territory is two-thirds water. The Indonesian Heritage Society said it was too early to comment on the scale of damage and any restoration work. “It’s certainly a great loss not only because of the contents of the museum but because of historic nature of the building and the whole Old Town area,” said Isla Winarto, president of the organisation. “We hope the museum can be restored to its original glory in the not too distant future.” (rtr)

ple and Watu Klotok Beach are mostly quiet without much going on. It does, however, provide you with a unique kind of sightseeing experience with an exotic beach and cultural landmark sharing the same site. Come weekends, the beach is often a favourite spot for residents to unwind and take in the sunset views On clear days, from the temple courtyard you’re usually provided with beautiful paddy views with the outlines of Mount Agung, Bali’s highest peak, as backdrop. The crashing waves of the Indian Ocean behind you provide the perfect soundtrack to the beautiful scenery. Some of the locals make a living from handicrafts created using gravel and pebbles sourced from the beach as ornamental features for pots, floor tiles and terracotta. The Newport Beach Police Department told USA Today on Sunday that Rodman, 56, was pulled over because of unspecified vehicle code violations. A subsequent investigation led to his arrest for DUI. According to police, Rodman was cooperative and agreed to take a breathalyzer test at the scene. He was then arrested, booked at the Newport Beach Jail and released about seven hours later. Rodman also was arrested for DUI in 1999 and 2003. “It’s no secret Dennis has been struggling on and off with alcoholism the past 17 years,” Rodman’s agent, Darren Prince, told USA Today in a statement. “He’s been dealing with some very personal issues the past month and we’re going to get him the help he needs now. “I’ve been his agent for 20 plus years and we’re more like brothers. He’s an amazing guy sober and deserves to find that happy place in his life with all he did to make his millions of fans happy during his NBA career. This is his chance to rebound in life so we ask for prayers and support from everyone.” Rodman played 14 seasons in the NBA from 1986 through 2000, averaging 7.3 points and 13.1 rebounds in 911 career games. He won five NBA championships, including three with the Chicago Bulls while playing alongside Michael Jordan. (rtr)

Peterhansel wins stage but Sainz remains well ahead BOLIVIA - Reigning champion Stephane Peterhansel fought back to win the eighth stage of the Dakar Rally in Bolivia on Sunday but Peugeot team mate Carlos Sainz remained more than an hour clear of the field. Peterhansel lost an hour and 45 minutes repairing his car on Saturday when he hit a rock while leading, the Frenchman dropping to third place while Spaniard Sainz took over at the front. On Sunday, in the longest special stage of the race and having to contend with high altitude and rain after a stopover without mechanical assistance, the 13-times champion known as ‘Mr Dakar’ secured the 40th stage win of his career. It was also his second stage win of the current rally but, with Monday’s timed stage leading into Argentina cancelled due to weather conditions, he knew it was unlikely to make much of a difference. “At least we didn’t run into trouble, which is good,” he said of the 498-km special stage from the salt flats of Uyuni to Tupiza. “I’m not back in the game, because we’re talking hours of time difference and I just got a few minutes back,” added Peterhansel.

“Gaining two minutes on Nasser Al-Attiyah won’t bring us back into the game. It’s a pity that tomorrow’s stage has been cancelled because we needed every opportunity we could get our hands on to claw back time.” Sainz was fifth on the stage, seven minutes and four seconds slower than Peterhansel, but remained an hour and six minutes clear of Qatari challenger AlAttiyah in a Toyota. Peterhansel was an hour and 13 minutes off the lead. “We’ll try to do our best in the next six days,” said Al-Attiyah, a two-times Dakar winner. “If Carlos makes a mistake, we can catch him. But one hour... it’s going to be difficult.” In the motorcycle category, French Yamaha rider Adrien van Beveren remained in the lead but with a reduced advantage after a stage won by compatriot Antoine Meo on a KTM. Van Beveren is now just 22 seconds clear of Argentina’s Kevin Benavides. The rally proper will resume on Tuesday for a stage between Salta and Belen. The Dakar ends in Cordoba, Argentina, on Jan 20. Sp rt United deal with Stoke at Old Trafford amid Sanchez talk

MANCHESTER - The thoughts of Manchester United’s fans may have been on the possible arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal but the players stayed focused to beat Stoke City 3-0 in the Premier League at a rainy Old Trafford on Monday. Two superbly taken first-half strikes, from Antonio Valencia and Anthony Martial, put United in command against a spirited Stoke side and Romelu Lukaku made sure of the win midway through the second half with a low drive. It may not have been vintage United but after leaders Manchester City lost their unbeaten league record in a 4-3 reverse at Liverpool on Sunday, it was vital Jose Mourinho’s side took the chance to close the gap at the top to 12 points. Mourinho omitted winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan from the squad amid reports that Arsenal were interested in him as part of a swap deal for Chile forward Sanchez, who is no longer a target for Manchester City according to British media. Full-back Valencia blasted United into a ninth minute lead after cutting inside on to his unfavoured - but still potent - left foot and hammering into the far corner, well beyond the reach of visiting keeper Jack Butland. Stoke’s new manager Paul Lambert, appointed earlier on Monday, watched from the stands, with the

sacked Mark Hughes’ former assistant Eddie Niedzwiecki in charge of the team.

SWEET FINISH

Stoke’s Stephen Ireland, making his first start since May 2016, then missed two good chances as the visitors showed plenty of attacking intent. But seven minutes before the interval, United’s French winger Martial made it 2-0 with a sweet first-time finish after being set up by Paul Pogba. Stoke responded positively again, going in at halftime after Xherdan Shaqiri had tested keeper David De Gea with a low drive, but United got a firm grip on the game after the interval. It was not until the 72nd minute though that the home side got the third goal - Lukaku wriggling to find enough space for a shot into the bottom corner after good work from Martial. “Stoke bought players to play football, they were not afraid to play and they created us problems in the first half,” said Mourinho. Niedzwiecki said he was unclear whether he would remain at the club once former Norwich City and Aston Villa boss Lambert set up his own staff. “Paul Lambert said a few words to the players in the hotel before the game but he showed me the respect, it was my team today. I enjoyed the experience but it has been incredibly difficult personally,” he said. “I will find out my future in the next 48 hours. I know how the game works.” (rtr)

City drop Sanchez interest as Mourinho waits

MANCHESTER- Manchester City withdrew from the battle to secure the services of Arsenal’s Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez, leaving Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United as the most likely destination for the 29-year-old. On Monday, the Manchester Evening News reported that City, long-term suitors of Sanchez, had decided to drop their interest in the Chilean after holding meetings with the club to discuss the financial aspects of the deal. While City manager Pep Guardiola, who coached Sanchez at Barcelona, was keen to add the forward to his squad, his wage demands and transfer fee were considered excessive by the club given he is out of contract at the end of the season. Mourinho confirmed that United were interested in Sanchez but said he was “neither confident nor unconfident” about securing his signature. “I am just relaxed with the feeling that he is an Arsenal player, he can stay there, but also with the feeling that he can move and if he moves I think we have a chance,” he told reporters after Monday’s 3-0 win over Stoke City at Old Trafford. “I think most probably a player like him has other big clubs interested. Who knows? I think him, Mr (Arsene) Wenger, Mr (Arsenal CEO Ivan) Gazidis, they are the ones that know really what is going to happen,” added Mourinho. Earlier speaking to the BBC, the United manager said: “He is an Arsenal player, if he stays it’s great

for Arsenal, if he comes to us, great for us, if he goes to another club, great for them.” Some media reports on Monday speculated that Chelsea could make an attempt to persuade Sanchez to stay in London rather than move to United while others have suggested that United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan may be part of negotiations to bring Sanchez to Old Trafford. The Armenian was left out of the squad against Stoke but Mourinho said his future was unclear. “I understand that with so much talk and so much speculation it is not easy for Mkhitaryan to play, to play at home with this feeling that it can happen, maybe doesn’t happen,” said Mourinho. “I prefer to protect him and protect the situation and at the end of the transfer market, if he stays here, he is a very good player, one that started this season very, very well and come a bit down. But last season did amazing things for us, helped us to win the Europa League being one of the most important players. Let’s see what happens,” he added. Sanchez was left out of Arsenal’s squad for their 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Sunday, with Wenger saying a decision on the Chilean’s future was “imminent”. “Yes (it’s imminent). Don’t read too much in it because even I don’t know which way it will go,” said the Frenchman. “He’s being vague at the moment. Watu Klotok Temple SEMARAPURA - Watu Klotok Temple is a 10th century Balinese Hindu temple in the coastal village of Tojan, in the Klungkung regency of East Bali. This beachfront temple dates to the time of the historic high priest Mpu Kuturan, but is set within a site that itself is believed to date back to the megalithic ages. The temple overlooks Watu Klotok Beach, a stretch of black and pebbly sand that’s bordered by the verdant rice fields of a neighboring farming village. You can reach the temple and beach after a scenic kilometre-long drive past these paddies from the Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra highway. ple and Watu Klotok Beach are mostly quiet without much going on. If you’re feeling peckish and you’d like to try out some local traditional fare, try the fish satay prepared in the Balinese wrap style, called ‘sate lilit’. (IBP/net) Former NBA star Dennis Rodman

(rtr)

People examine the damage after a mezzanine floor collapsed at the Indonesia Stock Exchange building in Jakarta, Indonesia January 15, 2018 in this photo taken by Antara Foto.

Wednesday, January 17, 2018

debt, they added.

(kmb)

However, after seeing the current conditions, he admitted that his

efforts to educate people have not been maximal. “So far, the garbage dump in Kintamani is also unclear and not available. People only rely on garbage delivery by the Environment Agency,” he explained. To make people aware and no longer throw garbage in the forest area, he said it is required joint movement from all related parties. For a deterrent effect,

strict sanctions should be applied to violators having been proved to throw garbage into the forest. Law enforcement certainly cannot be done as the authority to the protected forest in Kintamani lies in the forest agency. “We at the subdistrict will continuously campaign to make people aware not to throw garbage into the forest,” said Dirgayusa.

(kmb41)

Scientists conduct turtle sampling in the Howick group of islands on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, in this handout photo dated August 19, 2014.

Warmer temperatures at Great Barrier Reef causing sea turtles to be born female

(rtr)

(kmb27)

(kmb28)
