PARIS - A new biography of French first lady Brigitte Macron says her husband penned a racy novel inspired by their early romance, when he was still a teenager and she his married drama teacher.

President Emmanuel Macron, who turned 40 last month, fell for Brigitte during rehearsals for a school play at the Providence high school in Amiens, and defied his parents’ disapproval to pursue the relationship with a woman 24 years his senior. The book, “Brigitte Macron, The Liberated Woman”, to be published next week, quotes a family neighbour from Macron’s home town who says she typed up the 300-page manuscript. “It was a daring novel, a little bit smutty. Of course, the names were not the same but I think he needed to express what he was feeling at the time,” the unnamed neighbour is quoted as saying in excerpts published by Closer magazine. A spokeswoman for Macron’s office declined to comment. In the excerpts, the typist said she had not kept a copy of the novel - perhaps sparing the blushes of a leader who has promised to clean up French politics and says he wants to restore the dignity of the presidency.

But Macron would not be the only current French politician to try his hand at adult literature. In 2011, the prime minister, Edouard Philippe, co-authored ‘Dans l’ombre’ (In the shadows), a political thriller laced with steamy encounters. The finance minister, Bruno Le Maire, has written a novel entitled ‘Le Ministre’ (The Minister), which includes a steamy scene between the minister and his wife in Venice. Macron’s literary ambitions as a young man are well known and he wrote at least two unpublished works before authoring a book entitled “Revolution” during his election campaign. He told the weekly magazine Le Point last year that he had not sought a publisher for the earlier works “as I was not happy with them”. In a separate article for the same magazine, asked by French author Philippe Besson if he regretted not becoming a writer himself, Macron replied: “My life isn’t finished yet.” (rtr)

Redmayne calls for Hollywood change on gender equality LONDON - Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne said on Sunday that Hollywood’s campaign for gender equality had been “a long time coming” and that a “huge amount of change” was still needed. Speaking on the red carpet at the world premiere of his new animated film “Early Man”, the British star was asked about reports of a significant pay gap between Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams for reshoots on “All the Money in the World”.

“It’s incredibly important and I think that it’s been a long time coming, and I think the fact that last year three of the top films were female-led films is showing there is change but there is a huge amount of change needed yet. It’s sort of systemic I think,” Redmayne said. Redmayne and “Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams play alongside Tom Hiddleston in a new prehistoric-era adventure about inept cavemen from Oscarwinning director Nick Park. Williams, who has read the

scripts for the final season of “Game of Thrones”, told fans it would be worth the wait for the much-anticipated finale. “It’s going to be very very good, and it’s not going to come out for another year because it just takes long to make these incredible episodes that we’re doing and I am just so proud of the work everyone’s putting in this year. And honestly we have never done anything like this, it’s very special so it takes time but it’ll be worth it,” she said. (rtr)

DUBLIN - Dolores O’Riordan, the lead singer of Irish rock group The Cranberries, died suddenly on Monday at the age of 46 during a recording trip to London, her publicist said. The cause of death was unclear. O’Riordan’s distinctive Irish lilt and yodel helped fuel the Cranberries’ rapid rise in the early 1990s with global hits “Linger”, “Dreams” and “Zombie.” The band went on to sell over 40 million records to become Ireland’s second-best-selling rock band after U2. Her three bandmates said in a tweet that they were devastated at the passing of an “extraordinary talent”. Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar in a statement described her as the “voice of her generation”. But a naturally reserved singer, O’Riordan often struggled with fame, leaving her native Ireland for several years to avoid the spotlight. During her separation from her husband in 2014, she was arrested for attacking a police officer. The singer’s publicist said she

died during a short recording trip to London, but declined to comment on the cause of death. “Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” the publicist, Lindsey Holmes, said in a statement. O’Riordan is survived by two daughters and a son. Police in London said a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead early on Monday at a hotel on Park Lane in central London. A spokesman said police were

continuing inquiries into the death, which was being treated as “unexplained”. The woman had yet to be formally identified, he said. METEORIC RISE The Cranberries shot to fame with their 1993 debut album “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?” after the hit song “Linger” was picked up by MTV. The band’s first three albums sold a combined 28 million copies. But the strain on O’Riordan, who was so shy that she performed with her

back to the audience during some early concerts, was also becoming clear, with the band cutting short a tour in 1996 citing exhaustion and disillusionment. O’Riordan left the Cranberries in 2003 and recorded two solo albums, before the band reformed in 2009. O’Riordan pleaded guilty to headbutting and spitting at an Irish police officer in 2014 following an alleged air rage incident. She later told an interviewer that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was struggling with the breakdown of her marriage. Last year the Cranberries cancelled a number of concerts in North America and Europe, saying O’Riordan was suffering from back problems. British pop band

Duran Duran, whose tour manager, Don Burton, was O’Riordan’s husband from 1994 until they separated in 2014 and was father to her children, said in a Twitter posting that they were “crushed” by the news. U2 said they were “floored” by the news in a statement posted on Twitter. “Out of the West came this storm of a voice -- she had such strength of conviction yet she could speak to the fragility in all of us,” the band said.
