The nuclear-powered USS George Washington, which carries 75 warplanes and has a crew of over 6,000, left a naval base south
of Tokyo on Wednesday morning and would join exercises with South Korea from Sunday to the following Wednesday, U.S. offi-
cials in Seoul said. “This exercise is defensive in nature,” U.S. Forces Korea said in a statement. “While planned well before yesterday’s unprovoked artillery attack, it demonstrates the strength of the ROK (South Korea)U.S. alliance and our commitment to regional stability through deterrence.”
China came under heavy pressure to rein in North Korea after its reclusive ally fired dozens of artillery shells at the South Korean island, killing two South Korean soldiers and setting houses ablaze in the heaviest attack on its neighbor since the Korean War ended in 1953. Continued on page 6
Prince William to wed in April at historic abbey Agence France Presse
LONDON – Prince William and Kate Middleton are to marry on April 29 next year at Westminster Abbey, the historic London church where his mother Diana’s funeral was held in 1997, royal officials announced Tuesday. The couple want to turn their wedding day into an international party in what is set to be the biggest royal event since Prince Charles and Diana married in 1981, aides said. William, second in line to the throne of 16 realms, including
Canada, Australia and New Zealand, is to tie the knot in the same church where the first king William was crowned in 1066 after the Norman conquest of England. “The venue has long associations with the royal family — it is in many ways the royal family’s church —
and of course with Prince William personally,” said Jamie LowtherPinkerton, the prince’s private secretary. “We know that the world will be watching on April 29, and the couple are very, very keen indeed that the spectacle should be a classic example of what Britain does best.” Continued on page 6
