BAGHDAD – An al-Qaidalinked group claimed responsibility Thursday for a bombing earlier this week targeting the Baghdad offices of a pan-Arab television station, describing the deadly attack that killed six people as a victory against a “corrupt channel.”

A statement posted on the website of the Islamic State of Iraq said the operation was carried out by a “hero of Islam” and was intended to hit the “mouthpieces of the wicked and evil.”

Stealing 3 laptops of employer, a hair stylist arrested Denpasar (Bali Post)—

On account of having much debt, Ni Komang Suartika, 21, from Kubutambahan, Buleleng, confessed to have no other choice but committing a crime.

Three laptops owned by her employer, Lim Maria Eva Natalia, a resident of Jalan Pulau Flores, Denpasar, were stolen by the suspect. However, the vice action of the suspect was finally revealed by West Denpasar Criminal Detective. The suspect was captured in her boarding house located around Jalan Raya Sesetan, South Denpasar, last Monday (Jul 23).

Ironically, the suspect took the three laptops of victim away within a day. She burglarized the victim’s home twice. Firstly, the suspect entered at 3:00 pm Local Time, while the second one at 03:00 am. “We have arrested the suspect. However, we still make the more profound investigation,” said Chief Unit of Criminal Detective, Wayan Wesnawa, last Wednesday (Jul 28).

When the suspects took action, she entered into the victim’s home at ease. The suspect had been a hair stylist at the victim’s beauty salon since three years ago. Moreover, the victim’s boarding house was close to the salon. “The suspect just needs to open the window and rub the victim’s laptops. It had been conducted twice within a day,” explained Wesnawa to journalists last Wednesday.

Once she successfully burglarized three laptops, two of them were pawned. One laptop was pawned on Jalan Teuku Umar, Denpasar, at the price of IDR 900, 000, while another laptop was pawned on Jalan Pulau Tarakan, Denpasar, with the price of IDR 1 million.

“The remaining one laptop is deliberately kept in her

rented room. And now, the evidence has been secured,” he said.

From the result of temporary investigation, the suspect was desperate to steal the laptops of her employer because she had much debt. While working in the beauty salon of the victim, the suspect had debt in some places. “I was forced to steal, sir. I have much debt.

And I used the pawning results to pay my debt and satisfy daily needs,” she admitted to investigators of West Denpasar Police. (kmb21)

Joint Team raid the LPG agents

Hundreds of damaged cylinders found Denpasar (Bali Post)—

To anticipate the occurrence of various effects due to expiration and destruction of gas cylinders of LPG sold by the agency in Denpasar, Joint Team of Denpasar Municipality held a raid to a number of LPG agents, last Wednesday (Jul 28). From the raid, the team coordinated by the civilian security guards (Trantib) and public order officers (Satpol PP) in cooperation with the Office of Industry and Trade as well as other relevant agencies encountered hundreds of 3-kg LPG cylinder in damaged condition and unfit for sale due to a potential hazard to consumers.

In responding to these findings, Technical Implementer of the Head of Trantib and Satpol PP of Denpasar Nick Natha Wibawa said the raid denoted a form of anticipation by Denpasar Municipality to avoid any disasters often caused by gas cylinders. Nick who is also the Assistant I of Regional Secretary of Denpasar expected Pertamina to supervise the LPG agencies and provide a certificate stating the sale of LPG gas cylinders in each agent was safe for

the public. “Based on the results of raid to a number of agencies, we were quite surprised because it was found many damaged gas cylinders. We just took some samples having no label of National Standard of Indonesia (SNI) to be examined further about their safety,” said Nick Natha Wibawa.

Out of thousands of gas cylinders stored in the warehouse of UD Lestari Jaya owned by Ni Made Nuratni, he said, his party took two LPG cylinders without SNI label. Apparently, one of those cylinders leaked. Meanwhile, the raid to another LPG dealer of Pertamina, namely PT Suman Gasindo Dewata, found 115 defective LPG cylinders. To that end, he called on the agents of LPG in order to check carefully before distributing them to consumers. By doing so, it was expected that gas cylinder would be completely safe. “We also expect the society to be more careful in buying gas, especially the 3-kg LPG,” he said.

In the meantime, Director of PT Suman Gasindo Dewata located in South Denpasar on Jalan Danau Tempe, Wayan Suwardana, in accordance with the results of the agent meeting with Pertamina said that all products were safe. Meanwhile, he really did not know about any counterfeit cylinder. In 2007 all of gas cylinders of Pertamina were not equipped with SNI label. However, after frequent explosions and fire accidents allegedly caused by a false tube, since 2009 Pertamina had issued the gas cylinder with standard label. “We always alert to the existence of damage and leakage on the gas cylinders by reexamining them in detail after obtaining from Pertamina,” he said.

Kerobokan Jail became more complete as now a Buddhist praying space has been inaugurated by the Badung Vice Regent Ketut Sudikerta, last Wednesday (28/7). The space use to be the children cells was named Cetya Dharma Metta.

Plastic Rubbish Damaged Gianyar Gianyar (Bali Post) –

The piling up plastic rubbish in Gianyar can be seen on roads after flooded by the heavy rain.

Now it is felt that plastic rubbish are damaging the environment and the cause of the floods. It is piling even more, dangerous and hard to manage. These complain has been coming from a student during a letter competition written to the Regent last Sunday.

In the letter, it is saying about saving environment from plastic rubbish by government should buy those rubbishes to be recycled. This is the same problem as the messy frangipanis on the roads. After recycled to a dupa (incense) the messiness was gone so the same thing should happen to plastic rubbishes. What’s more in making the plastics decomposing takes decades or even hundreds of years.

Last Wednesday (28/7),

Gianyar Region Living Environment Organization (BLH) Duties Manager (Plt.) Wayan Artana, SH gave aspiration to the incoming suggestion given through the letter competition. However it needs deeper analysis if government is going to buy those rubbishes, “We are trying to research on how other places succeeded in taking care of the plastic rubbishes.”

Artana added these rubbishes are everyone’s homework. To get it decompose with the soil it takes reaching thousands of years. If it’s decomposed the particles will pollute the soil and water. And so it needs deeper analysis on how to avoid these.

In year 2011, Gianyar will try to minimalize plastic rubbishes.

Calonarang: The King, the Witch and the Priest At the beginning of 7th century, a Balinese prince becomes the king of Java, the great Erlangga. His mother, Mahendradatta, was a Javanese princess who ruled Bali with her Balinese husband, Dharmodayana, until the husband, suspecting her of practising evil magic, exiled her to the forest.

When Erlangga’s father died, leaving Mahendradatta as a rangda or a widow, she conspired to use her band of pupils trained in the black arts to destroy Erlangga’s kingdom.

Her chief grudge against Erlangga because of fancied insults to her beautiful daughter, Ratna Menggali – the noblemen of Daha had refused her in marriage for fear of her mother’s evil reputation.

Calonarang (Erlangga’s mother who practising evil magic) went with her pupils to the cemetery and they prayed and danced in honour of Begawati, the deity of black magic, to help them destroy Daha.

The goddes appeared and danced with them, granting her permission, warning the witch, however, to pre-

serve the center of the kingdom untouched. The witches danced at the crossroads and soon people fell in great numbers.

Discovering the cause of the epidemic, Erlangga ordered his soldiers to go and kill the witch. They stole into her house while she slept and stabbed her in the heart , but Calonarang awoke unhurt and consumed the daring soldiers with her own fire. The witch went once more into the cemetery and danced with her pupils, dug out corpses, cutting them into pieces, eating the members, drinking the blood, and wearing the entrails as necklaces.

Begawati appeared again and joined in the bloody banquet, but warned Calonarang to be careful. The witches danced once more at the crossroads and the dreadful epidemic ravaged the land, the vassals of Erlangga died before they could even bury the corpses they bore to the cemeteries.

The desperate king sent for Mpu Bharada, the holy man from Lemah Tulis, the only living being who could vanquish the witch. Mpu Bharada planned his campaign carefully. He sent

Bahula, his young assistant, to ask for the witch daughter’s in marriage.

Highly flattered, the mother gave her consent and after a happy and passionate honeymoon, Bahula learned from his wife the secret of Calonarang’s power. The possession of a little magic book which he stole and turned over to his master. The holy man copied it and had it returned before the disappearance could be noticed. The book was a manual of righteousness and had to be read backwards. The holy man was then able to restore life to those victims whose bodies had not yet decayed.

Armed with the new knowledge, he accused the witch of her crimes, but she challenged him by setting an enormous Banyan tree on fire by a single look of her fiery eyes. Bharada foiled the enraged witch by restoring the tree, and she turned her fire against the holy man. Unmoved, he killed her with one of her own mantras, but she died in her monstrous form and Bharada, to absolve her of her crimes and enable her to atone for them, revived her, gave her human appearance, and then killed her again. Relatives search for bodies at Pakistan air crash Associated Press Writer

ISLAMABAD – Relatives desperate to find the bodies of loved ones joined emergency teams Thursday at the scene of Pakistan’s worstever plane crash, but recovery work was badly hampered by thick mud, rain and slippery hillsides.

The Airbus A321 operated by local carrier Airblue crashed into hills overlooking the country’s capital, Islamabad, during stormy, monsoon weather, killing all 152 people on board. Wreckage was strewn over about a third of a square mile (onesquare kilometer) section of the forested slopes.

The Civil Aviation Authority said the plane had been ordered to take an alternative approach to the runway, but had veered off course. Finding out why will be a key task of the investigation team, said Riazul Haq, director general of the agency. “The fact remains it flew where it should not have done,” he said.

Army troops and civilian rescue workers searched a large stretch of the hills scorched by the crash, but the tough conditions slowed the pace of operations. Helicopters could not fly in the heavy rain and low clouds, said a spokesman for the Capital Development Authority, which helps deal with emergencies.

An Associated Press Television News cameraman in the hills saw relatives of passengers working with soldiers and other rescuers at one

crash site, where the undercarriage of the jet had come to rest. They collected several body parts in small bags.

Dozens of relatives and friends of those killed slept outside Islamabad’s largest hospital overnight, hoping to receive bodies.

They were still there Thursday morning, hugging one another as their tears mixed with the heavy rain, but few corpses were released.

The plane’s “black box” flight data recorders have yet to be recovered. Information extracted from them is needed to determine the cause of the crash. Defense Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar and other officials have said the government does not suspect terrorism. The plane was flying from Karachi, the country’s commercial capital.

Even when the search is completed, it could take days to identify all the victims with DNA testing since most of the bodies were torn apart and burned in the crash, a grim scene described by rescue workers scouring the twisted metal wreckage.

BANGKOK – Thailand’s Supreme Court on Thursday issued a new arrest warrant for fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra in connection with allegations of false declaration of assets.

“Thaksin failed to appear without notifying the court. His action shows an intention to escape,” said judge Thanan Wanagowit. “The case is pending until he can be arrested,” he added.

Thai courts have issued a series of warrants for Thaksin for charges including terrorism — an accusation linked to violent street protests in April and May by his supporters within the anti-government “Red Shirt” movement.

In the latest case, Thaksin faces allegations that he presented false asset declarations to the National Anti-Corruption Commission while in office.

The former telecoms tycoon was ousted in a bloodless military coup in 2006 and lives in self-imposed exile to avoid a prison jail imposed in absentia for corruption. Thaksin is idolised by many Red Shirts for his populist policies, including cheap healthcare and village funds, but Thailand’s elite see him as corrupt, authoritarian and a threat to the revered monarchy.

after ruling that he had abused his power for personal gain.

French couple in court in case of 8 dead newborns Associated Press Writer

VILLERS-AU-TERTRE, France – A French prosecutor recommended Thursday that charges be leveled against a couple detained after eight dead babies were discovered on their former property in northern France.

A judicial official said the couple, in their mid-40s, are the parents of the dead babies. The corpses were found on two different parts of their property in Villers-au-Tertre, near the city of Lille. The official was not authorized to be publicly identified because the investigation is under way.

The woman would face charges of manslaughter against minors less than 15 years old and her husband for failure to report a crime and concealment of corpses, prosecutor Eric Vaillain said in a statement. He planned a news conference later Thursday.

The two were detained Wednesday, and French police escorted them to a court hearing in the city of Douai in the Nord region near the French border with Belgium.

Police sealed the doors, gate and windows of the house where the remains of some of the babies were discovered. DNA tests are being conducted to establish for sure whether the couple are the parents, and autopsies are being conducted on the corpses to try to determine the cause of death.

The investigation began after

the new owners of the house where the couple had lived found two bags of bones in the garden and plastic bags of bones in the garage.

France has seen a string of cases in recent years of mothers killing their newborns and saving and hiding the corpses. In one case, Celine Lesage was sentenced in March to 15 years in prison after acknowledging in court that she killed six of her newborns, whose corpses were found in plastic bags in her basement in northwest France.

Another Frenchwoman, Veronique Courjault, was convicted last year of murdering three of her newborn children. Her husband discovered two of the corpses in a freezer while the two were living in South Korea. During the trial psychiatrists testified that she suffered from a psychological condition known as “pregnancy denial.”

Germany also has seen similar cases. In one, a woman was convicted of manslaughter in 2006 and sentenced to the maximum 15 years in prison for killing eight of her newborn babies and burying them in flower pots and a fish tank in the garden of her parents’ home near the German-Polish border.

Also Thursday morning, two road side bombs, targeting Iraqi army patrols exploded in Fallujah, 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of Baghdad, killing two Iraqi soldiers and wounding eight others, police and hospital officials in the city said.

And in the northern city of Mosul, a bomb attached to a police vehicle killed one policeman and injured two others, a police official in the city said. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

S. African tiger caught after 2 days on the run Associated Press Writer

JOHANNESBURG – The escaped Bengal tiger who captured headlines across South Africa has been found and returned home after a 2-day search, hungry and worse for the wear after a jump from the back of a moving truck, the tiger’s owners said Thursday.

The owners of Panjo, a full-grown tiger, say tracker dogs found the cat’s scent late Wednesday in bush woodlands about 70 kilometers (40 miles) south of Johannesburg. The tiger was slightly hurt, evidently from jumping from a moving truck when it escaped Tuesday, an animal welfare group said.

Police had warned residents of the neighborhood not to approach Panjo, though the owners said it was tame and had been hand-raised from a cub.

The hunt attracted widespread publicity in South Africa where tigers are not a native species.

The tiger appeared not to have eaten since its escape. The captors offered it raw meat and milk to attract it toward them to put on a harness.

“We felt relieved and very glad to see that Panjo was safe and sound and that no one harmed him,” said Justin Fernandes, 25, the son of Panjo’s owner, Goosey Fernandes.

Panjo was found after one of the search dogs spotted it in the field near the Fernandes’ farm in the district of Groblersdal.

“Approximately an hour after we gave the dogs a break from the search, one of the dogs got a good sense near our farm. When we shone our lights in the grass we saw Panjo’s eyes. We called him and when he heard our voices he started moving toward us slowly and greeted us,” Justin Fernandes told The Associated Press.

Earlier searchers had used aircraft fitted with heat-seeking sensors to

help find the 17-month-old tiger.

Isabel Wensel, an official with the South African Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said there was no evidence the tiger had attacked anyone.

“If he was hungry he probably would have hunted chickens as I believe that is what they usually fed him,” Wensel said. Panjo had “a few scrapes” on its face and a foot from jumping out of the moving truck, she said.

Wensel said the tiger might have followed its instincts as a wild animal if it had been confronted by humans. When found, the animal appeared frightened and bewildered and at first mock-charged its captors.

“Panjo is a very large tiger so we can only imagine what he is capable of,” she said. “He was in a different environment to what he is used to and that always affects animal behavior.”

JAKARTA - Greenpeace made fresh allegations Thursday that units of Indonesian paper and palm oil giant Sinar Mas are clearing high conservation-value forests including habitats of endangered orangutans.

Greenpeace Indonesia forest campaigner Bustar Maitar said new investigations showed Sinar Mas subsidiaries logging peat forests and orangutan habitats on Borneo island despite repeated promises to end such practices.

“Our photos provide fresh evidence of Sinar Mas’s continued active clearance of remaining rainforests and deep peatlands,” he told AFP as the environmental group released a report on the issue.

“Contrary to their claims of sustainability, land-clearing is still happening on the ground.”

The allegations are the latest in a string of Greenpeace attacks on Sinar Mas, whose palm oil unit PT SMART has recently suffered the loss of major clients Unilever and Nestle over environmental concerns.

“Sinar Mas is the leading palm oil producer in Indonesia. It is their duty to show the way and that’s the rea-

son why we have targeted them. We would be more than happy to stop this campaign,” Maitar said.

In addition to sheltering critically endangered species like orangutans, high conservation-value forests are also rich stores of greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

Sinar Mas denies the Greenpeace allegations and SMART has promised to release an audit on August 10 to prove that its operations are sustainable.

Indonesia is considered the world’s third-biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, mainly through deforestation, much of which is carried out illegally with the alleged connivance of officials and security forces.

The Greenpeace report published Thursday says Sinar Mas, which is controlled by the Widjaja family headed by company founder Eka Tjipta Widjaja, is planning to aggressively target sensitive forests in Papua province.

“Analysis by Greenpeace of areas targeted by Sinar Mas for oil palm development in Papua indicates that these areas contain 50 percent primary forest cover and significant areas of peatland,” it said.

“Its future expansion into rainforest areas and peatlands will further contribute to habitat loss and climate change.”

SMART President Director Daud Dharsono said the company was in fact helping to preserve forests and species such as orangutans.

“We are not responsible for clearing primary forests, which are the natural habitats for orangutans, and high conservation-value areas (HCV),” he said in a statement sent to AFP. “On the contrary, all our concession areas do not contain primary forests and we conserve high conservation-value areas, creating sanctuaries that will continue to preserve biodiversity.”

A company statement said that forested areas in Greenpeace photographs of SMART concession areas showed that the firm was conserving high-value areas on the degraded land it owned or managed.

Greenpeace earlier this month accused foreign firms like Walmart, Carrefour and Tesco of contributing to forest destruction and species loss in Indonesia by buying from paper and palm oil giant Sinar Mas.

The crowd hurled stones at an Ahmadiyah mosque in Manislor village in Kuningan district, leading to an hour-long conflict with police, said local general secretary of the Ahmadiyah sect, Nurahim.

“About 200 people pelted stones at our mosque and clashed with the police for about an hour. It’s not clear yet who was the organiser of the mob,” Nurahim, who goes by one name, told AFP. “The police were able to secure the mosque and handle the people.

The situation, however, is still tense now,” he said.

Nurahim said the village’s 3,000 Ahmadiyah followers were ready to help the police if needed and were

not carrying out counter-attacks.

“We had a similar experience before in 2007, in which our mosque and houses were attacked. A house was burned and several were damaged at the time,” Nurahim said.

The Ahmadiyah sect, which claims 500,000 followers in Indonesia, believes that its founder Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was the final prophet and not Mohammed, contradicting a central tenet of mainstream Islam.

Indonesia’s top Islamic body issued a fatwa in 2008 describing the sect as “deviant”. Ahmadiyah, which many conservative Islamic leaders in the Muslim-majority nation describe as their enemy, has had a presence in the country since the 1920s.

JAKARTA - An Indonesian woman was sentenced to three years in jail Thursday for sheltering and assisting terrorists involved in suicide bomb attacks on two Jakarta hotels last year. Putri Munawaroh, 21, was the only suspect to survive a ninehour shoot-out with police at her house in Central Java last September. Terror mastermind Noordin Mohammed Top and three other Islamist extremists including her husband were killed in the firefight.

“The defendant was proven guilty of sheltering and assisting terrorists.

The defendant is sentenced to three years in prison,” Judge Ida Bagus Dwiyantara said at the South Jakarta district court.

The twin attacks at luxury hotels in Jakarta on July 17 last year killed seven victims plus two suicide bombers. Thursday’s sentence was lighter than the prosecutors’ recommendation of eight years.

“She received a shorter sentence because we considered her young age and she also has a baby. She didn’t provide assistance willingly,” Dwiyantara said. About 30 women wearing Islamic headscarves shouted “Allahu Akbar (God is greater)” and “the judge is an infidel” in court after the verdict was read out. Munawaroh’s lawyer, Achmad Michdan, said they would appeal against the decision.

Australia’s Corby appeals for clemency from Indonesia Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Australian drug smuggler Schapelle Corby has sumbitted a clemency appeal to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for a reduction in her 20-year jail sentence, an official said Thursday.

A Supreme Court official said the appeal had been sent to Yudhoyono,

but refused to comment on an Australian media report that the court had recommended the sentence be slashed.

“The Supreme Court forwarded Corby’s clemency appeal to the president on Monday. It’s up to the president to decide. I can’t give more details,” court official David Simanjuntak said.

The 33-year-old from the Gold Coast was convicted of trafficking 4.1 kilograms (nine pounds) of marijuana into Indonesia in 2005.

She has always maintained her innocence and claims international smugglers placed the drugs in her luggage. Her lawyers say she should be released on humanitiarian grounds because of mental illness.

“I asked in the appeal for her to be freed as she isn’t guilty and she’s become psychotic. If you meet her now she’ll just laugh and won’t understand anything you say,” lawyer Iskandar Nawing said.

Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said Australia supported the plea.

“We have made it clear to Indonesia that if and when she formally made an

application of clemency to the president that we would support that,” he was quoted as saying by the ABC, Australia’s public broadcaster.

“As appropriate, into the future we will continue to make it clear to Indonesia that we support the plea of clemency, but in the end it is a matter for Indonesian authorities and the president.”

Stunning Okokan attraction conjures up spectators Bali Post

TABANAN - Tanah Lot Art Festival (TLAF) 2010 has entered the third day. Last Wednesday (Jul 28), was held several attractions such as Legong Dance presented by the art envoy from Pandak Customary Village, Slonding art by Batugaing Kaja Hamlet, Beraban Village, Okokan show by Kediri Customary Village, Angklung Kebyar by the village of Abian Tuwung Customary Village, Bebarongan show by Suralaga Customary Village and Snow Group.

One of the attractions winning the applause of spectators was okokan attraction. It was an instrument resembling to large size cow bell made of wood and used as a means of communication by community groups dwelling at remote villages. The

smaller one is commonly known as kroncongan mounted on a tree to drive away the animals destroying the coconut crops and also as necklace of livestock (cattle and buffalo).

The okokan attractions itself took the start at Wantilan Hall of Pakendungan Temple and made a parade toward the front of Penyawang Temple.

Okokan constituting the peculiar art of Tabanan is widely performed on welcoming guests. The shape and sound having typical characteristic makes Okokan directly be invaded by visitors. When arriving in front of the Penyawang Temple, the okokan showed another fragmentary accompanied by some female dancers.

“I have never seen such amazing performances. This is really fantastic,” confessed one of the visitors, last Wednesday. (122)

Bali’s Vehicle and Licensing Department to Go On Line Denpasar - In order to increase the road tax revenues and enhance vehicle security, the Bali GOvernment plans to introduce an on-line vehicle and license registration system to replace the current system which, by all accounts, is plagued by middlemen and non-official fees.

The information gathered stated that the new eSamsat system is targeted to end the presence of middle-men while providing a safe and efficient service to the public. Explaining the move, Governor

Pastika said, “We want to give the best service to the public with zero fixers (middlemen) in the Samsat online system.”

The governor added that the e-Samsat system is a part of Bali’s e-government program to adopt technology as a means of improving service to the public.

These young artists showed off their best creative scratch artworks on canvas in various styles and techniques of visual arts. The exhibition taking the theme “Exploration” was opened last Saturday (Jul 24) and lasted until August 8, 2010.

In accordance with the theme, the exhibition highlighted the paintings being capable of showing the discoveries, ideas, concepts, discourses and aesthetic quality, as well as independence of the artists in reading the present context.

BUSINESS German ‘jobs miracle’ stalls Indonesia overtakes Thailand in car sales as unemployment rises Agence France-Presse

BERLIN - Germany’s unemployment rate rose slightly in July, official figures showed Thursday, a blip in what has become known as a “jobs miracle” as Europe’s top economy powers its way out of recession.

The federal labour office said that 7.6 percent of the workforce was unemployed in July, up from 7.5 in June, while the total number of people out of work rose 39,000 to 3.19 million.

Stripped of seasonal effects skewing the figures, however, the

adjusted number of jobless fell 20,000 from June, the labour office said, compared with a projected drop of 19,000 according to analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires.

The head of the labour agency, Frank-Juergen Weise,

said: “The German economy is still on an upward trend, the situation on the labour market has improved further.”

Germany is leaving behind its worst recession in more than six decades last year when output slumped by nearly five percent.

However, due partly to statesponsored shortened working hours, the feared spike in unemployment did not take place, with the rate going up to 8.2 percent. Some had predicted that the 10 percent mark would be breached.

North Korea, China sign new economic cooperation accord Agence France-Presse SEOUL - North Korea signed a new accord on economic and technical cooperation with China on Thursday, state media said as the impoverished communist country struggles to recharge its faltering economy.

JAKARTA - Indonesia has hit the fast lane in terms of auto sales and has overtaken Southeast Asian pace-setter Thailand for the first time, according to a Nikkei survey from the first six months of the year.

Officials and auto executives attending the 18th Indonesia International Motor Show in Jakarta told AFP the outlook for sales in the archipelago of 240 million people had never been brighter.

“Since late 2009 and early 2010, all auto brands and producers have been trying to increase production capacity in Indonesia” to meet demand, industry ministry official Budi Darmadi said.

“Compared to other countries in the region, we have the fastest growth of car sales.”

Sales peaked in Indonesia at 600,000 units in 2008 but slumped 20 percent last year due to the global financial turmoil. This year’s figures are expected to top 700,000 for the first time, ahead of Thailand.

The Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo) said auto sales in Indonesia jumped 76 percent to 370,206 vehicles in the first half of 2010, driven by strong demand for minivans with engine outputs of 1.5 liters.

Sales in Thailand rose 54 percent to 356,692 units during the same period, according to the Nikkei survey released Wednesday.

China denies forcing foreign firms to transfer technology Agence France-Presse BEIJING - Beijing on Thursday denied US charges that it forces foreign firms to hand technology over to Chinese rivals as the price of entry to its huge market, saying its policies are in line with global rules.

“Countries around the world have taken a lot of measures to encourage technology innovation,” a commerce ministry official, who declined to be named, told AFP. “The Chinese policies are in line with relevant WTO rules.”

The comments were in response to a US Chamber of Commerce report this week that accused China of abusing the allure of its vast market to push foreign companies to transfer their latest technologies to Chinese competitors.

This was a “blueprint for

technology theft on a scale the world has never seen before”, the report said.

The chamber’s report is the latest in a chorus of complaints by foreign businesses and governments over perceived unfair policies and market restrictions in the world’s third-largest economy.

US Trade Representative Ron Kirk joined the fray on Wednesday, responding to the chamber’s complaints by saying Washington planned to push Beijing on the issue.

“That is going to be one of the top items that we continue to engage China on,” Kirk told reporters in Washington.

China committed at highlevel Sino-US talks in May that its innovation policies would be nondiscriminatory, protect foreign intellectual property rights (IPR), and ensure open markets and trade,

according to Washington.

Beijing also pledged to leave the terms and conditions of technology transfer and other proprietary information to individual enterprises, Kirk’s deputy Demetrios Marantis said earlier this month.

China launched its “indigenous innovation” campaign in 2006, officially to encourage the development of domestic technology and reduce its reliance on foreign know-how.

The commerce ministry official said the push did not discriminate against foreign companies and pledged China would protest IPR. Tensions flared after Beijing issued rules late last year under the innovation campaign that were widely seen by foreign businesses as squeezing them out of the government’s multi-billion-dollar procurement market.

Concerns over indigenous innovation extended to security encryption rules, domestic patent laws and preferential policies for domestic companies, the US Chamber of Commerce report said.

Foreign complaints about China’s market policies, particularly the indigenous innovation campaign, have intensified in recent months.

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said during a visit to China last week that European companies were increasingly worried about doing business in China, singling out the technology policy and IPR protections.

Recent surveys by both the European and American chambers of commerce in China expressed similar concerns, with members saying they were increasingly pessimistic about the future of doing business in the country.

Some 1.18 million new vehicles were sold in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore during the period, it said.

This was an increase of 41 percent and put the industry on track to surpass the 2008 sales record of 2.09 million units for the six key Southeast Asian markets.

The news will be music to the ears of Toyota executives — Japanese cars account for about 80 percent of sales in these countries.

Multipurpose models like Toyota’s Avanza — a four-door family hatchback — make up 30 percent of total sales in Indonesia, Nikkei said.

“Indonesia may hit its first million annual car sales in the next two years,” industry analyst Suhari Sargo said.

Sargo said more and more Indonesians would trade in their motorcycles for cars as wealth was more evenly distributed outside the economic centre of Java island.

“But before it can achieve more well-balanced wealth distribution, the government must improve infrastructure such as roads,” he said.

Gunadi Sindhuwinata, the chief of prominent distributor Indomobil, said most vehicles were purchased through credit so low interest rates were crucial.

“Considering the country’s population of 240 million, sales of 700,000 units a year doesn’t mean much,” Sindhuwinata said.

Indonesia weathered the global liquidity crunch and is forecasting growth of around 5.7 percent this year, among the fastest in the G20 group of rich and developing countries.

Its potential has caught the eye of Japanese carmaker Nissan, which plans to invest 20 million dollars in its Indonesian assembly plant to double production capacity to 100,000 cars from 50,000.

“Today we have about five percent market share. This is far below our potential,” chief executive Carlos Ghosn said while visiting Jakarta in June.

Mercedes-Benz booked remarkable growth although competition in the luxury segment was tough, Mercedes-Benz Indonesia chief executive Rudi Borgenheimer said.

“Our sales have increased about 46 percent to June this year compared to the same period last year. I’m very proud,” he said.

“Per capita income has risen.

More people can afford cars now compared to when I came to this country four years ago.”

Rising car sales may be good news for some, but residents of the traffic-choked Indonesian capital could be forgiven for hoping the additional vehicles end up on other cities’ roads.

Daniel Craig stars in Hollywood’s first Millennium Trilogy Agence France Presse

LOS ANGELES – British actor Daniel Craig will star in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” Hollywood’s first adaptation of one of late Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s record-setting Millennium Trilogy, a Sony Pictures official said.

The newest James Bond impersonator will play journalist-sleuth Mikael Blomkivst in the upcoming production, a version of which has already been filmed in Sweden, a Sony studio spokesman said.

Craig, 42, will start working on on the film in a few months, once he and co-star Harrison Ford finish shooting “Cowboys and Aliens,” said the spokesman.

He said David Fincher, who has directed “Seven,” “Zodiac,” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” will be directing “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

Entertainment media said Craig could also star in the following two Millennium flicks: “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.”

Sweden’s production company Yellow Bird and director Niels Arden Oplev have already filmed the trilogy, which opened in Europe late last year.

News of Craig’s next project coincided with online retail giant

Amazon’s announcement that the Millennium Trilogy had made Larsson the first author to sell more than one million books in Amazon’s Kindle electronic bookstore, since its 2007 launch.

Larsson, the editor-in-chief of the magazine Expo, died suddenly of a heart attack at age 50 in 2004, one year before the first of his trilogy novels hit the stands in Sweden.

‘Welfare robots’ to ease burden in greying Japan Agence France Presse

TOKYO - Robotic wheelchairs, mechanical arms and humanoid waiters are among the cutting-edge inventions on show at a robotics fair in Japan, a country whose population is ageing rapidly.

To ease the burden in a nation with one of the world’s highest life expectancies, engineers have come up with technologies to make life easier for the elderly and disabled, and their caregivers. A new robot wheelchair developed at Saitama University near Tokyo doesn’t need to be propelled manually by the user or pushed by a caregiver but can instead automatically move besides a walking person.

“Imagine if you enter a store having somebody push your wheelchair,” said one of the researchers, Yoshinori Kobayashi, assistant professor for information science and technology at the university.

“Your relationship with him or her may not look equal to a store clerk or onlookers. You would fail to be treated as an independent person.”

The wheelchair is fitted with a camera and sensors that detect both the caregiver and obstacles ahead to safely guide the vehicle, which can also be stopped or overridden with a joystick by the person in the wheelchair. Kobayashi, pointing at a shortage of caregivers in Japan, said the team is working on a system that would allow more than one automated wheelchair to follow a caregiver at the same time.

Another innovation to make life

easier for the disabled is the “RAPUDA” robotic arm, a “portable manipulator” being developed by Woo-Keun Yoon of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.

Patients who are largely paralysed but can move some part of their body, such as a fingertip, a toe, or their neck, will be able to control the arm and utilise its reach and strength.

Concern about rising temperatures has been growing in recent years as atmospheric scientists report rising temperatures associated with greenhouse gases released into the air by industrial and other human processes. At the same time, some skeptics have questioned the conclusions.

The new report, the 20th in a series, focuses only on global warming and does not specify a cause. “The evidence in this report would say unequivocally yes, there is no doubt,” that the Earth is warming, said Tom Karl, the transitional director of the planned NOAA Climate Service.

“But,” it adds, “the temperature increase of about 1 degree Fahrenheit experienced during the past 50 years has already altered the planet. Glaciers and sea ice are melting, heavy rainfall is intensifying and heat waves are becoming more common and more intense.”

Last month was the warmest June on record and this year has had the warmest average temperature for January-June since record keeping began, NOAA reported last week.

Emotional Massa braced for Hungary return

Agence France Presse BUDAPEST - Felipe Massa returns to the Hungaroring, where he suffered a high-speed horror crash 12 months ago, determined to stage an emotional reunion with the medical staff and marshalls who saved his life. The Brazilian’s Ferrari careered off the track at last year’s Hungarian Grand Prix after he was struck on his helmet by a part which flew off Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP car in qualifying.

He spent over a week in a coma suffering from a skull fracture and battled to save his sight in one eye.

He also missed the rest of the season.

“Going back to Budapest will be a very special weekend for me, for reasons which you can all appreciate as it was there, just over a year ago, that I was seriously injured,” said Massa.

“My first meeting when I arrive at the Hungaroring circuit will be with all the marshals and medical staff who did such a very good job of carefully getting me out of the cockpit. “I want to thank these people, with whom I now feel a special bond.”

Massa arrives in Hungary with the controversy over last weekend’s German Grand Prix still engulfing the Ferrari team. Massa was leading at Hockenheim when he slowed to al-

Yamaha keen for Brno decision YAMAHA boss Lin Jarvis has revealed that he is hopeful of being in a position to finalise the team’s 2011 MotoGP line-up by the time the season resumes at Brno next month.

Both Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo are out of contract at the end of the current season and while Lorenzo is hotly tipped to stay where he is, rumours continue about where Rossi’s future lies – with the multiple champion widely expected to make a switch to Ducati to replace the departing Casey Stoner.

With no riders currently signed to the factory team for 2011, talks are ongoing to finalise Yamaha’s lineup and Jarvis said he was keen to see everything signed and sealed before the Czech race.

“The proposal has been made and I would say things are at a good point,” he told the Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport. “We would like everything to be agreed for Brno so we can announce the 2011 team.”

While Rossi is expected to move on, the Italian has an offer on the table to remain with Yamaha but has yet to give the team a definitive answer on his future plans. “I can’t give details on negotiations but the offer we have made is perfectly acceptable,” Jarvis added.

“That is our view.”

Should Rossi, or indeed Lorenzo for that matter, elect to move on next season, current Tech 3 rider Ben Spies would be given the chance to make the move into the full factory team after an impressive debut season with the satellite team which has included the best finish for a non-factory rider after he took third at Silverstone.

“If one of our two riders leave, then he will be in the team,” Jarvis continued. “We believe we will have a winning team in 2011.”

The issue of riders isn’t the only thing Yamaha needs to confirm for next season, with the issue of sponsor-

ship being tied into the line-up that the team fields. FIAT has been title sponsor of the factory team since 2007 but if Rossi leaves, Jarvis admitted it is likely that the Italian car manufacturer will follow suit.

“It depends on the answer we get from Valentino,” he said. “We already have a contract with Petronas for 2011 and could increase their effort and space on the bike. We are also talking with other companies outside motorcycling but we aren’t worried. “This will be the third step and the priority is to sort the team.”
