Spain suffers travel chaos in general strike Agence France Presse

MADRID – Spaniards suffered rush-hour travel chaos and pickets gathered outside factories as unions launched a 24-hour general strike Wednesday to protest tough government labour reforms and austerity measures. In Madrid, frustrated commuters walked to work or waited at bus stops or at metro stations, garbage was left uncollected and thousands of union leaflets urging workers to stay at home littered the streets.

Unions are also fighting steep spending cuts, including an average state employee salary reduction of five percent, a pensions freeze and plans to gradually raise the retirement age to 67 from 65. It is the country’s first general strike since

2002 and the first since Zapatero took office in 2004.

Unions last week struck an unprecedented deal with the government to ensure minimum services.

The deal provides for a minimum of 20-40 percent of international flights and 10 percent within the Spanish peninsula.

It will allow 20 percent of high speed trains and 25 percent of district trains, including 30 percent for morning rush hour. But no regional or long-distance trains are guaranteed.

The unions have also called about 100 street demonstrations across the country. In the capital Madrid, a march is scheduled for Wednesday evening across the city centre.

Pollution Source in Serangan Unknown Denpasar (Bali Post) –

The suspected sea pollution in Serangan Island waters, South Denpasar, caused loss for sea weed farmers and still unknown its source. It is suspected they are oil coming from the boats going in and out the Benoa waters and Serangan Island. Environmental Board (BLH) of Denpasar coordinated with Pelindo III Benoa last Tuesday (28/9) to make sure of the source.

In the meeting with the Head of the Board AA Bagus Sudarsana with General Manager of Pelindo Wilayah III Benoa Bambang Priyanto, they haven’t made sure what the shource is.

Sadly, Pelindo III couldn’t make sure it either, although Bambang promised will go to the location and do more examination even though his staffs have often inspecting it.

Bambang also said in the future inspection will be routine and to

avoid pollution there will be a place to change oil. Also for those fishermen who has spare petrol while sailing were reminded to be careful when filling it in so it won’t spill over.

As told before, the bad weather hitting Bali these past months have made hundreds of sea weed farmers in Serangan Beach screeching as because of the pouring rain they admitted they can’t get the sea weeds as its salt gone down drastically and not supporting the sea weed growth.

The extreme weather effect was worsen by the oil spilling tht polluted the sea around there.

One of the Serangan residents who’s also Denpasar House of Representative member, Ketut Arya Supatra, admitted the pollution did happen. He is making sure those boats coming in and out SeranganBenoa were the ones that caused the pollution, “If we look through it, the causer must be those ships and boats who come and go besides Serangan towards Benoa.” (kmb12)

Englishman Attacked One Accused Captured, Four Wanted Denpasar (Bali Post) –

One of the five attackers of a foreigner, Russell Fleming (29), was successfully captured by Kuta Police Sector. The accused was A. Lende (29) a resident living in Patimura Street, Kuta, Badung. Accused was found four dayes later in the east of Apace, Legian Street, Kuta at 2 am while other four who’s identity has been known are still being searched.

Head of Kuta Police Sector, Adjunct Police Commissioner I Gede Ganefo SH MH last Tuesday (28/9) have confirmed this case so now accused is being jailed and still has

an ongoing inspection, “The incident was suspected to be a mugging on 21st September 2010 at 4 am wita.

Victim admitted was being attacked by five people who were around Legian Street, Kuta.”

There are two version connecting to the incident’s motive. Victim’s statement said as he got out of Bounty Discotheque, the five people came to im. They then attacked the victim, hit by them all and caused his lips ripped. More over victim got it 11 sewn, “This was the victim’s statement.”

Meanwhile, the accused version said that one of his friends were hit

The dengue illness case have increased in Karangasem as in 2009 only 168 people caught it and some died from it yet until August 2010 there has been 470 victims.

There are also victims who died from dengue. This was reported by Head of Karangasem Health Agency dr. IGM Tirtayana, MM last Tuesday (28/9) at Ababi, Karangasem after a competition judging on Bali Province level mosquito destroying.

The spreading dengue in Karangasem attacked the whole region and besides dengue there’s also cikungunya at Manggis sub district especially in Ngis and Selumbung. More thatn 2000 people were attacked with symptoms headache, sick feeling, pain in all joints and those who are late treated caused them paralyzed.

Cikungunya also reported to have attacked some people in Seraya.

Tirtayana stated, the causer of this spreading disease caused so many fees to be spent and the agency is still in debt. As from the IDR 197 Million helping fee from the Karangasem Regional Budget and Expenses have all finished

Tirtayang declined the increasing victims was caused by the failure of the agency’s program on anticipating and tackling the endemic disease and thinks that it is caused by the weather that is supporting the mosquitoes population growth which were the rains that keep coming down when it’s suppose to be dry season already. To draw more tourists BTDC organizes Nusa Dua Fiesta 2010 Jakarta (Bali Post)—

PT Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) persistently attempts to attract more tourists and promote Bali through the festival entitled Nusa Dua Fiesta 2010. “We are glad to welcome this event because it has great potential to provide good imaging for Bali and for Indonesia’s tourism,” said Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik in a press conference related to the implementation of Nusa Dua Fiesta 2010 in Jakarta, Tuesday (Sep 28).

Ministry of Culture of Tourism gave full support to PT BDTC as one of the State Owned Enterprises assuming the duties to manage the tourism area of Nusa Dua Bali to hold the festival. According to Wacik, tourism promotion in the region was very important because Nusa Dua formerly belonged to isolated area at the southern tip of Bali. “We need a massive campaign for a better image of our tourism including Nusa Dua,” he said.

Nusa Dua Fiesta itself is an annual promotional activity consisting of a series of activities including the performance of arts, culture, sports, music and exhibitions. This year the festival is held at the Peninsula, Nusa Dua, Bali, on October 15-19, 2010 with a special theme Green Tour-

ism. It is expected to remind all parties of the importance of environmental conservation for sustainable tourism in Bali.

In the meantime, President Director of PT BTDC, I Made Mandra, said that Nusa Dua Fiesta 2010 was not only intended to promote Nusa Dua Bali, but also to reflect a high concern with the environment. “It has been recognized by the world so that Nusa Dua was the first region to obtain Green Globe Award certificate endorsed by the United Nations,” he said.

His party had also been working with a number of investors who built the condotel (condominium hotel) and special convention facilities on the area of

seven hectares as part of the infrastructure of Bali. “We do hope that Nusa Dua Fiesta event is able to enhance the positive image of Bali tourism to the world,” he said.

His party did not set any target for the event in terms of ‘sale’ but it put emphasis on the imaging and tourism promotion. In the series of the festival, it would also be held an environmental awareness program named Green Camp involving school children to do beach clean up along the beaches of Nusa Dua, knowledge about eco-tourism, concerns with the plastic waste, planting coral reefs, and reforestation activities. Meanwhile, its sporting event would consist of volleyball, billiards, cricket, golf tournament, and the Bali International Marathon. (010)

After the coastal area of Candikusuma, Melaya, was eroded by abrasion, similar incident also happened to the Anyarsari Beach, Melaya. Even, the abrasion began to threaten the buildings of Penataran Ped Temple and Segara Temple. The temples belonging to the territory of Anyarsari Kauh Customary Village lay on the Anyarsari beachside. Since the adverse weather condition within the past few weeks, the buildings of temple began to erode. Even, when it rained heavily the temple was inundated.

According to a local community leader, Wayan Gatra, Tuesday (Sep 28), since the abrasion set to erode seriously, approximately five meters of the coastland had been rubbed down.

“The temple has become very close to the sea and been under threat as well,” he said accompanied by the head of supporting devotees of Ped Temple, Wayan Patrianta.

Previously, his party had indeed obtained assistance in the form of concrete breakwater

from Jembrana Regency Government but it did not function properly. Supporting devotees of the temple expected the government could help make coastal abutment to prevent further abrasion of the seawater waves.

Observation made on site last Monday showed that estuary located in the east of the temple supported by 118 families looked shabby. Similarly, the position of temple was adjacent to the seawater and anytime could be threatened by abrasion.

On the other hand, the Head of Commission C of Jembrana House, I.B. Susrama, asserted that the House would attempt to bring the aspirations of supporting devotees of the temple so that it could be realized. According to Susrama, abutment project of the river required a large amount of budget so his party should make coordination with the Provincial Government. “We have submitted the proposal to Governor. Then, we just need to submit another proposal to Regency Government,” explained the legislator from Satria, Pendem, Negara. (sur)

Getting no turnover, palm sugar makers come to extinction Semarapura (Bali Post)—

Although has been well known and favored across Bali, the palm sugar produced by Besan Village, Dawan, Klungkung, in fact is unable to survive accordingly. Conversely, the number of its makers increasingly declines. Apart from the difficulties to market their products, the palm sugar makers keep on losing. Their products are not comparable to the cost of production. Even, they often have to suffer from losses.

In the past, Besan Village was known as one of the central businesses of brown or palm sugar in Klungkung Regency. Almost every household ran a brown sugar business. Moreover, to increase the production with good quality, the makers established a cooperative handling a variety of things starting from the manufacturing process, packaging to marketing. Unfortunately, existence of the cooperative with a processing machine of palm sugar could not help at all.

“Now, at least there are 100 sugar makers remaining to survive,” said a resident of Besan Village, Komang Tunas, Tues-

day (Sep 28).

It was revealed that the production cost was estimated to reach IDR 90,000 for 15 coconut trees in a day. The cost included the climbing service, firewood, energy and time.

Meanwhile, the production yielded was only worth IDR 50,000. Within a day, he got maximally 5 kilograms of palm sugar with the price of IDR 10,000/kg. The price would rise to IDR 15,000/kg when religious holiday came. He also added that the younger generation of Besan Village no longer got interested in the making of palm sugar.

“Except for those having no choice or drop out of school,” he said. If this condition continued to occur, it was ensured the well known palm sugar maker would come to extinction. According to him, many residents changed their profession such as to be daily worker.

To support the economy of family, the residents were helped by the production of coconut. On average, each household had 20 coconut trees that could produce 15 coconuts per tree within three months. The price of coconut was very cheap, namely IDR 1,000 per piece. (kmb20)

WASHINGTON – Australia’s former prime minister John Howard has attacked “multiculturalism” in English-speaking nations, saying that some sectors have gone too far in accommodating Muslim minorities. The blunttalking conservative, who led Australia for 11 years before losing 2007 elections, said Tuesday on a visit to Washington that the “Anglosphere” needed to take greater pride in its values and achievements.

“This is a time not to apologize for our particular identity but rather to firmly and respectfully and robustly reassert it,” Howard said at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank. “I think one of the errors that some sections of the English-speaking world have made in the last few decades has been to confuse multiracialism and multiculturalism,” Howard said.

Howard pointed in particular to Britain, whose Muslim community came under a spotlight after the 2005 bombings on the London transport system.

“I am a passionate believer in multiracialism. I believe that societies are enriched if they draw, as my country has done, from all parts of the world on a non-discriminatory basis and contribute, as the United States has done, to the building of a great society,” he said.

“But when a nation draws people from other parts of the world, it draws them because of the magnetism of its own culture and its own way of life,” Howard said. “People want to live in the United States not because of some futuristic ideal of multiculturalism, but because of what they regard as the American way of life and American values,” he said.

While in office, Howard faced criticism from his opponents that he aggravated anti-Islamic sentiment through tough anti-terrorism laws and tighter immigration controls, including a test on “Australian values.”

Howard said he welcomed Australian Muslims and hailed the recent election of Ed Husic, the son of Bosnian migrants, as his country’s first Muslim member of parliament.

But Howard, who enthusiastically supported former US president George W. Bush’s invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, warned that Islamic radicalism posed a real threat. He criticized those who would make cultural identity “mushy and unclear and undistinct,” rejecting the “assumption that the way to win favor from extremism is to make yourself a little more attractive to that extremism.”

Howard hailed what he called the values of political freedom and rule of law of five “Anglosphere” nations — Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the United States.

SEOUL – The youngest son of ailing leader Kim Jong-Il has been given powerful posts in North Korea’s ruling party, state media said Wednesday, confirming his status as heir apparent in the nuclear-armed nation. Kim Jong-Un was named one of two vice-chairmen of the central military commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea and a member of its central committee, a day after his father appointed him a four-star general.

“Now the crown prince has all he needs to become the next leader,” said Choi Jin-Wook, senior analyst with the (South) Korea Institute for National Unification. Jong-Un’s high position on the party military commission chaired by his father gives him considerable authority over the world’s fourth largest armed forces, numbering almost 1.2 million.

The speed of his rise to power may indicate that his 68-year-old father’s health is worse than believed, analysts said. Kim Jong-Il, who took over from his own father and national founder Kim Il-Sung, suffered a stroke two years ago and is also thought to have kidney problems.

The Swiss-educated son, believed aged about 27, had never been named in state media before this week. No adult photograph has been seen outside the secretive communist nation.

The United States is “watching and looking for details (on the son) just about like everyone else,” said Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell.

Jong-Un’s party appointments were announced after a one-day conference of the Workers’ Party, its highest-level gathering for 30 years. The meeting also appointed the leader’s sister Kim Kyong-Hui as a member of the party political bureau. Her powerful husband Jang Song-Thaek was made an alternate member, and also appointed to the military commission and the central committee.

The couple are seen as key supporters of the untested son and likely to act as regents as he gains experience.

MANCHESTER – New opposition leader Ed Miliband has vowed to ditch the baggage of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and revamp the Labour Party to propel it back into power.

In his first major speech since taking over, the 40-year-old said Labour had only themselves to blame for losing office after 13 years in May’s general election. The party’s youngest ever leader told their annual conference in Manchester on Tuesday that he would bury the “old thinking” and take Labour on a journey of change.

But a barbed comment by his elder brother David Miliband — who narrowly lost to Ed in the vote to become the Labour Party’s new leader — risked overshadowing the keynote ad-

daunting problems.

It is struggling to revive a crumbling command economy amid persistent severe food shortages, and is grappling with international sanctions imposed to curb its nuclear and missile programmes. The conference, however, re-elected Kim Jong-Il as party general secretary, indicating he has no immediate plans to relax his grip on power.

“Kim still remains relatively healthy but he is in a hurry to instal his son as successor because of his age,” said Yang Moo-Jin of Seoul’s University of North Korean Studies. The conference laid the foundation for continuation of hereditary succession but showed leader Kim is still firmly in control, Yang told AFP. Jong-Un’s appointment as a general and a vice chairman of the military commission means the North will continue its military-first policy, he said, adding the son is now in a position to control the armed forces.

But the son did not become a party secretary in charge of personnel changes or join its prestigious political bureau presidium. “The leader has apparently decided that the son is still too

young and inexperienced and needs more time to prepare himself to be in charge of personnel appointments,” Yang said.

The party elected four new members to the politburo presidium, of which Kim himself was previously the only member. He was joined by Kim YongNam, the nominal head of state, as well as ChoeYong-Rim, Jo Myong-Rok and Ri Yong-Ho. Analyst Choi said Jong-Un’s postion as vice-chairman of the military commission places him right below his father and above everybody else in the military. “This week’s promotion of Jong-Un was really a strong, daring move that may draw much grumbling and ire from old senior officials, though they will never express such feelings publicly,” he told AFP. “It also means Kim Jong-Il’s health is really in a dire condition and he is trying hard to clear up uncertainties surrounding the future of the regime’s leadership.”

Campbell said in Washington he would travel to Japan and South Korea next week to compare notes on the changes, which Washington was treating with caution.

It was at this moment ex-foreign minister David was caught by ITV News on tape turning to deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman and saying: “You voted for it, why are you clapping?” She replied: “I am clapping because as you

know, I am supporting him.”

The elder Miliband’s remarks caught on tape contrasted sharply with his public reaction to the speech — he said Ed Miliband gave “a really strong speech... the speech of a conviction politician.” The Miliband brothers’ leadership battle has turned into a self-confessed “soap opera”, with David still refusing to reveal before Wednesday’s deadline whether he will serve in Ed’s top team.

David Miliband returned to his London home late Tuesday from Manchester two days before the end of the conference, heightening speculation that he would not join his brother’s team as a frontbench spokesman.

In his speech earlier, the new Labour leader said it was no accident that the party had lost five million votes between its landslide victory in 1997 and 2010.

“A political force founded on its ability to adapt and change lost its ability to do so,” he said.

It will be the first stop on the 2010 ASP World Junior Tour (WJT), running at the high-performance wave of Keramas from October 2-13 and offering a prize pool of US $95,000.

The inaugural WJT event will see six representatives from ASP Australasia, ASP South America, ASP North America and ASP Europe, five representatives from ASP Africa, ASP Hawaii and ASP Japan, and additional wildcards to

make up the 48-man men’s junior field.

The prestigious event will also feature an 18-woman field, which will eventually crown the undisputed ASP Women’s World Junior Champion.

As a major plus for the Balibased event, former World Tour competitor and newly appointed Oakley South Pacific representative Beau Emerton has been given the reigns as contest director. He’ll

be assisted by Indonesian pro surfer Tipi Jabrik in the role.

Emerton is thrilled to be involved with the fast approaching event.

“I am extremely excited to be the Contest Director of the Oakley World Pro Junior – the first ever,” he said.

“This is my first gig as Contest Director but hope to bring my years of experience within surfing competitions along with a great

team to the event.”

The ex-pro added it was cool to be contest directing an event in Bali some 20 years since he first visited the much loved surfing destination.

“I have been coming here since 1988 when I competed in the World Junior Scholastic titles – it feels like yesterday,” he said.

“It’s such a great feeling to be able to put back into and be a part of a sport that has given me so much. The people of Bali, the culture, the surfing and the kids will make an awesome event. Oakley has stepped it up another notch and I can’t wait to get over there for

the start of the event on October 2nd.”

Similar to years past, athletes will compete on their respective regional ASP Pro Junior Series throughout the season to qualify for the ASP World Junior Tour. Qualification for the ASP WJT will be based on regional results from January 1 through August 31, 2010.

Up to now, ASP Australasia, ASP North America, ASP Europe, ASP Japan, ASP South Africa and ASP Hawaii have released their qualifying athletes for the Oakley ASP World Pro Junior. ASP South America will release their qualifiers by the 16th September.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Chile rescue speeds up, Al-Qaeda terror plot cheering miner families targeting Europe uncovered AP

LONDON – Western intelligence agencies have uncovered an Al-Qaeda plot to launch Mumbai-style terrorist attacks in Britain, France and Germany, reports said Wednesday.

Militants based in Pakistan were planning simultaneous strikes in London and major cities in France and Germany, Britain’s Sky News television reported, citing intelligence sources.

It was “one of the most serious AlQaeda attack plans in recent years” and was inspired by the terror group’s fugitive leadership in Pakistan’s tribal areas, said the BBC. The United States was also a possible target and President Barack Obama had been briefed about the threat, said ABC News in the US citing American officials.

Planning for the attacks was advanced but they were not imminent and recent drone strikes in Pakistan had killed several leaders of the plot and severely disrupted it, said Sky. Well-armed, commando-style teams of jihadists planned to seize Western hostages and murder them, in a manner similar to the siege of two Indian hotels in Mumbai in 2008, according to the BBC. In the Mumbai attacks, 10 gunmen went on a three-day rampage, killing 166 people and injuring more than 300.

In Britain on Wednesday, the national threat level remained at “severe” — where it has been since January — which means a terrorist attack is thought highly likely.

France has been on a heightened state of alert amid warnings of an imminent terrorist attack but an official said late Tuesday these warnings were not linked to the reported AlQaeda plans.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that the CIA had stepped up its drone attacks in Pakistan’s tribal areas as part of efforts to prevent the mass attacks on European cities.

Pakistani security officials have reported around 20 drone strikes in the country’s tribal belt along the Afghan border this month.

The latest on Tuesday killed AlQaeda’s operational chief for Afghanistan and Pakistan in Pakistan’s tribal areas, according to security officials in the country.

The source of the threat information was a suspected German terrorist captured on his way to Europe and now being held in Afghanistan, said ABC, citing intelligence and security officials in the US and Europe.

The report of the foiled plot came after the Eiffel Tower in Paris was

evacuated Tuesday following the second hoax bomb threat at the landmark in a month and amid official warnings in France of an imminent terrorist attack.

However, a French intelligence source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP he was “not at all in the know” about the reported plot.

A French government source, with links to the intelligence service, said recent warnings of an attack in France were not linked to Wednesday’s reports of planned attacks on European cities.

Britain’s Home Office and the Metropolitan Police had no comment on the reports.

Reports of the plot came after US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said last week “increased activity” by terror groups signalled a heightened threat against Western countries, including European states.

“We are all seeing increased activity by a more diverse set of groups and a more diverse set of threats,” she told a US Senate hearing asked about warnings in Europe of a growing terror threat.

Australian jumper dies in fall from Malaysia tower AP

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – An Australian woman fell to her death in Malaysia when her parachute failed to open after she jumped off a tower to practice for a parachuting event, organizers said Wednesday.

Kylie Tanti Marion, 42, was performing her third jump Tuesday while practicing at the Alor Setar Tower in northern Malaysia — the second-highest tower in the country — when she

plunged to her death, tower management said in a statement.

“I saw her struggling to pull open the parachute but her attempt failed,” witness Mohamad Zaidi Zainol Abidin, who was standing nearby the scene, told The Star newspaper.

Marion, an experienced skydiver, died instantly, according to officials from Telekom Malaysia, which owns the 541-foot-high (165-meter-high) Alor Setar Tower.

cal participants preparing for the KL Tower International Jump on Oct. 7, a BASE-jumping event that began in 2000. BASE stands for the places such jumpers usually leap from: buildings, antennae, spans and earth.

SAN JOSE MINE, Chile – The families of 33 trapped miners are in high spirits after a surge in the drilling of escape tunnels raised hopes that the men’s rescue may come sooner than scheduled.

Relatives smiled, hugged and yelled “Viva Chile!” as officials reported one of the rescue drills made twice the progress Tuesday than had been expected.

They promised the families that preparations for the rescue effort on the surface would be ready by Oct. 12, and said they are planning for the possibility the miners could be pulled up nearly a month ahead of the official schedule.

But the officials also urged caution, warning that unforeseen problems could slow the work.

Tuesday in the camp where families have held vigil since a rock collapse blocked the mine’s exit shaft Aug. 5. At first, no one knew what it meant, just that it was good news.

Then, rescue workers came down to report that the “Plan B” drill had reached 984 feet (300 meters) deep, nearly halfway to its goal, after advancing 243 feet (74 meters) Tuesday, more than twice as fast as expected.

At that pace, barring complications, the drill could break through to the miners in about five more days, and be reinforced with a metal sleeve even before Oct. 12.

OAXACA, Mexico – A loud noise shattered the early morning darkness as an entire hillside collapsed on a town in Mexico’s rainsoaked southern state of Oaxaca.

Roads were blocked by slides and a washed-out bridge, and the only reports — via satellite phone — were grim: Hundreds could be buried or dead.

But hours later, when rescue workers finally walked into Santa Maria de Tlahuitoltepec, only 11 people were missing and none confirmed dead. It was welcome news after nearly 12 hours of dire predictions in an area that has been battered by the remnants of a hurricane one week followed by a tropical storm the next.

“So far no one is confirmed dead, only 11 missing who we hope ... will be found,” Oaxaca Gov. Ulises Ruiz told The Associated Press on Tuesday night.

Dozens of state police and firefighters dug with picks, shovels and a bulldozer in the river of mud and stones that had swept down the hillside early Tuesday, but they later had to suspend the search for eight missing children and three adults as continued rains threatened the unstable soil.

Ruiz initially told a Mexico City television station that he had received reports 300 homes were buried, with as many as 1,000

people inside. Civil protection authorities later reported seven people killed and at least 100 missing, but as outside rescuers finally reached the scene, Ruiz later put casualties at four dead and 12 missing. Later, officials said that even the deaths were not confirmed.

The slide dragged houses packed with sleeping families some 1,300 feet (400 meters) down the hillside along with cars, livestock and light poles — leaving as many as 300 homes buried, said Donato Vargas, an official in Santa Maria de Tlahuitoltepec reached earlier in the day by satellite telephone. Residents who made it out early in the morning said they had no success digging out neighbors.

“We have been using a backhoe but there is a lot of mud. We can’t even see the homes, we can’t hear shouts, we can’t hear anything,” Vargas said. “We were left without electricity, without telephone and we couldn’t help them.

There was no way to move the mud.”

Several hundred rescue workers — soldiers, state and federal police plus firefighters, civil defense and Red Cross workers — left as early as 5 a.m. to reach the battered town. When they started arriving around noon, the situation wasn’t nearly as bad as they feared.

JAKARTA - Australian, British and US rock bands including The Smashing Pumpkins and Stereophonics have been urged to withdraw from a music festival in Indonesia because of its tobacco sponsorship.

Anti-tobacco activists and health experts from Australia, the United States and Wales have expressed their concern that the bands’ actions will encourage youths to smoke in a country with high and rising addiction rates.

The country of some 240 million people is one of the last lightly-regulated major tobacco markets in the world and is paying the price in terms of growing rates of addiction, especially among women and children.

Its reputation as the wild west of tobacco control was graphically illustrated earlier this year with the release of a video on the Internet of a twoyear-old Javanese boy with a 40-cigarette-a-day habit.

The Washington-based Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids said it had written to US bands The Smashing Pumpkins, MUTEMATH and Dashboard Confessional asking them to cancel their appearances at the Java Rockin’Land festival next month.

“As long as this event is sponsored by a tobacco company, any band that participates should know that it is helping market cigarettes to children,” Campaign president Matthew L. Myers said.

“If these bands reject tobacco sponsorship, they can send a powerful message that they care about the health of the world’s children and will not allow their name and talent to be used to market deadly tobacco products.”

In Australia, health experts have accused local bands The Vines and Wolfmother of ignoring the connection between tobacco marketing and smoking-related deaths.

“Tobacco industry marketing is a key factor in what is killing people from tobacco-caused disease — about six million a year in fact,” Simon Chapman and Becky Freeman of the University of Sydney’s School of Public Health wrote in an article on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s website.

Indonesia has “virtually no tobacco control policies”, making it a “tobacco industry paradise where publicity for music festivals like the one Wolfmother and The Vines will participate in wallpaper the country’s media,” they said.

In Britain, anti-smoking group Ash Wales has similarly condemned Welsh band Stereophonics for agreeing to play at the October 8 to 10 festival in Jakarta.

In all, 14 foreign bands are scheduled to play at the festival, along with a host of local acts. Advertising for the event includes cigarette branding and tickets are being sold at a discount to students.

Five killed in residents’ clashes in Tarakan Antara

SAMARINDA - Five people were reportedly killed in clashes between two groups of Tarakan (East Kalimantan) residents that began last Sunday night and continued until Wednesday morning.

“Four were killed in the brawls that have been going on from last Sunday until early this Wednesday.

So the death toll of the incident since it broke out on Sunday night has reached four,” a police officer who refused to be named said here on Wednesday.

According to several residents, the brawls had quickly spread to other parts of the city.

On Tuesday morning, the clashes occurred in certain areas in Tarakan city. “At the beginning, the clash took place in a suburb, namely on Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Yos

Sudarso. But this morning the fighting had spread to Selimut Dalam, closer the city center,” Nanda, a resident of the Selimut Dalam area, said.

One of the rival groups has since Tuesday morning also blocked access to the airport and Juwata seaport.

In the meantime, police and military personnel have been mobilized to halt the clashes and restore order and security in Tarakan.

World Bank: Indonesia’s economic fundamental strong Antara

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s economic fundementals are now strong enabling the government to shift its policy focus from short-term uncertainty to investment achievement, especially in the infrastructure sector, a World Bank economist said.

“Indonesia has recorded strong economic growth against a backdrop of the world’s economic uncertainty and volatility,” the bank’s senior economist for Indonesia, Enrique Blanco Armas, said in a quarterly economic development exposure here on Tuesday.

He said the country’s economic growth in the second quarter reached 6.2 percent, which was the highest since the 2008 crisis driven by domestic demand especially private sector consumption.

“The growth pattern will continue to the near future with investment

predicted to increase in line with improving credit access for investors and increasing capital expenditure in 2011,” he said.

He said the investment growth in 2010 would be driven by increasing commodity prices, bigger prospects for foreign capital investment and stronger credit growth.

He said the strong growth was also marked by increasing imports driven by domestic activities and strong rupiah exchange rate while export recovery has slowed down.

“Exports of manufacturing goods keep increasing but exports of mineral resources are stagnant creating a deficit in the trade balance in July,” he said.

He said Indonesia could also sustain its economic growth in the midst of food price fluctuations that had caused general inflation to rise to 6.4 percent year-on-year in August 2010.

“The rise in the general inflation is caused by pressures on the offer side due to the impact of weather conditions on food prices from the price of chili to other food stuffs particularly rice,” he said.

Under the conditions Enrique predicted that in the short term investment and domestic demand would increase that would contribute to contractions on the surplus in the current account and curbing the fluctuations of food prices but increasing the rate of inflation in 2011.

“The growth of the main trade partners will slow in 2011 after reviving in 2010,” he said.

He said the World Bank predicted Indonesia’s economic growth in 2010 would reach six percent up from initial prediction of 5.9 percent.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government on Tuesday dismissed a lawmaker’s proposal to force teenage schoolgirls to undergo virginity tests.

Women’s affairs ministry official Wahyu Hartomo said such tests would violate basic human rights and potentially harm the health of young women.

“That kind of test violates human rights and will have serious psychological impacts on students,” he told AFP. “It is more effective for our generation to receive moral education from their parents at home, especially with the (bad) influence from the Internet.”

Lawmakers in Sumatra Island’s Jambi province have agreed to drop the idea, which was proposed by local parliamentarian Bambang Bayu Suseno, Hartomo said.

Suseno believes girls should be required to pass virginity tests before they can enter state-funded high schools, citing concerns over pre-marital sex among teenagers in the Muslim-majority country.

“The idea is simple. Parents are obviously afraid of their daughters being deflowered before the time comes, so before they continue their studies they can undergo a virginity test and automatically protect their dignity,” he told The Jakarta Post newspaper.

“Why are girls who lose their virginity allowed to go to public school?”

Indonesian officials are struggling to balance the country’s rapid modernisation, especially the runaway growth of Internet use, with traditional, mainly Muslim values.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signed a controversial anti-pornography law, backed filters against online pornography and warned that a “frenzy” of Internet use could tear the nation apart.

MANGUPURA — Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Finance is drafting a law as a legal protection to appraisal profession and the bill of land procurement in Indonesia. This bill is going to be submitted to the House of Representatives (DPR) in the upcoming year 2011.

Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance of the RI, Mulia P. Nasution on the sidelines of the opening of the 25th Pan Pacific Congress of Real Estate Appraisers, Valuers and Counselors at BICC, Nusa Dua, on Tuesday (Sep 28), explained that the appraiser bill and the land procurement bill was the government’s efforts to support the development activities in appropriate with the acceptable principles to the global world. By seeing the economic crisis hitting Indonesia within the past few decades, it was considered necessary to increase the competence and integrity of the appraisal profession.

“Currently, the bill of appraiser is being discussed among the ministries, including the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights. This bill will be submitted early 2011. Meanwhile, the bill of land procurement has entered final stage. If possible, both bills could be accomplished immediately,” said Nasution.

It was said that the public appraisal was very important in the matter of appraising a property, assets or others.

Many land disputes often occurred in Indonesia and they had relation to infrastructural problems due to the absence of clear legal protection concerning with the appraiser.

In preparing the appraisal bill, the Ministry of Finance of the RI involved the Head of Accounting and Appraisal Service, Directorate General of Tax and Directorate of State Property.

Meanwhile, the determination of the value of land or compensation that should be made through appraisal be-

came one of the points mentioned in the bill of land procurement. Additionally, the bill also mentioned if there were objections of the community related to appraiser’s decision on the land acquisition would be settled in court.

“The bill of land procurement is also quite important. A lot of our infrastructural development came to standstill due to inappropriateness of the purchase and selling price of land or the so-called compensation between the community owning the land and government in the land acquisition,” he said.

Chairman of the Indonesian Society of Appraisers (MAPPI) Hamid Yusuf on that occasion revealed that appraisal profession in Indonesia was still very minimal. Up to this moment, the number of appraiser having license in Indonesia was only 307 members out of 1,500 active members. In fact, in the next few years, Indonesia was estimated to require 10 thousand persons providing this appraisal service.

“In the country like New Zealand, 1 million people are served by 50 appraisers, while in Indonesia 1 million residents are served by less than 10 appraisers. At least, next year we will have 600 appraisers or double of the present amount,” he said.

Based on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it was described the needs of assessors should be proportional to the economic growth. The appraisers had something to do with calculation of land assets in the infrastructural mechanism and counting the wealth of officials.

“Currently, there are about 450 cities and regencies requiring appraisal services to appraise their public assets.

Meanwhile, the growth of MAPPI’s member is only about 5-10 percent per year. Fifty percent of the need for appraisal services comes from the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK),” he explained.

According to him, in the valuation, Indonesia still relied on the value of tax object selling price (NJOP). In fact, NJOP only functioned to determine the tax. DENPASAR - Bali’s imports continued to increase reaching 45.1 million US dollars in the JanuaryMay 2010 period, and most of the commodities comprised manufactured products, and to lesser extent farm products.

The manufactured products accounted for 98 percent of Bali’s total imports, and only two percent consisted of farm products, head of Bank Indonesia Denpasar, Jeffrey Kairupan, said in his report on Bali’s regional economic study here on Tuesday.

The imports included boats, float-

ing structures, mechanical machines, power equipment, optical goods, photographic equipment, jewelry, and steel and iron goods.

Almost 50 percent of the imports were worth 21.4 million dollars and included machinery, mechanical goods, electronic equipment, and others.

“We face tough competition from other Asia countries such as Vietnam, India, China and Thailand but the unique design make the products from Bali always demanded by the customers,” he added.

SPICE PASTE: 12 shallots, peeled and sliced 6 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 4 red chilies 2.5 cm galangal (laos), peeled and sliced 2.5 cm kencur, peeled and sliced 5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and sliced 2 tsp coriander, crushed 3 candlenuts 1 tsp dried shrimp paste ¼ tsp black peppercorns, crushed pinch of freshly grated nutmeg 2 cloves 3 tbsp oil PREPARATION: Cut the duck into 12 pieces and pat dry.

Prepare the spice paste by grinding or blending all ingredients except oil. Heat the oil and sauté the spice paste for 2 minutes. Add the duck, increase heat and sauté for 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the coconut milk and all ingredients except fried shallots and simmer, uncovered, until the duck is tender and the sauce has thickened.

Garnish with fried shallots and serve with white rice.

BUSINESS IMF boss sees low risk of ‘currency war’ Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON - The risk of a global currency war is “low” but cannot be ruled out, IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said on Tuesday, following a spate of currency interventions.

Amid mounting anger that economic powers are pouring money into currency markets to make exports cheaper at the expense of rivals, Strauss-Kahn insisted the potential impact of an all-out currency war should give countries pause.

“I don’t feel today that there is a big risk of a currency war. But that’s part of the downside risk,” Strauss-Kahn told reporters in Washington.

“I think the probability is rather low, because everybody can understand that too big conflicts... will have a negative impact. Nevertheless it may happen.”

His comments come a day after Brazilian finance minister Guido Mantega vented his anger at the impact the rising Brazilian real has had on the country’s vital export sector.

“We’re in the midst of an international currency war,” Mantega said in Sao Paulo hinting that intervention could come soon. “This threatens us because it takes away our competitiveness.”

In recent weeks nearly a dozen governments from Colombia to Singapore have admitted to buying up local currency in the hope of driving down the price of the currency to make exports cheaper.

The dollar has fallen by about 25 percent so far this year against the Brazilian real.

“The talk of currency war is a bit exaggerated, I would say, but there is definitely a growing risk of a lower-level confrontation between countries trying to protect their exports in an unstable global economy,” said analyst David Gilmore of Foreign Exchange Analytics.

But the latest rumblings come against a background of heightened tensions between the United States and China over the value of the yuan and as country’s scramble to regain their competitive edge after the global economic slowdown.

US lawmakers were expected to vote on Wednesday to introduce sanctions against China if the undervalued yuan is not allowed to rise against the dollar.

The legislation enjoys strong support from Democrats and Republicans some five weeks before November elections shaped by deep US voter anger at the sour economy and historically high unemployment hovering near 10 percent.

The currency issue now looks set to feature prominently when finance ministers and central bankers gather in Washington next week for the IMF’s annual meetings and at upcoming group of 20 summits in South Korea.

“I think it is one of the questions which will be very much discussed during the annual meetings and during the two meetings in Korea in October and in November,” said Strauss-Kahn.

But according to one former IMF official the Fund is at least partially to blame for the the ratcheting tensions.

“The IMF has abdicated its surveillance responsibilities, it is a free-for-all out there, you can do whatever you want,” said Morris Goldstein, former IMF official and member of the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

“If China can be intervening and and manipulating its exchange rate for seven or eight years in a row and the Fund does not say anything, then why shouldn’t everyone else do it?”

TOKYO - Japanese business confidence has improved for a sixth straight quarter but companies are expecting a gloomy end of the year amid increased global economic uncertainty, the Bank of Japan said Wednesday.

Sentiment among major manufacturers rose to a higher-thanexpected reading of 8 in September from 1 in June, according to the central bank’s closely watched Tankan survey of more than 11,000 firms.

The latest figure shows that optimists still outweigh pessimists among major manufacturers in terms of their view of Japan’s economic climate, in only the second positive reading since June 2008.

But the forecast for the December survey is for a reading of minus 1, suggesting that companies expect conditions to sharply worsen in the months ahead as Japan remains beset by deflation and the effects of a strong yen.

“Companies are very cautious about the economy towards the yearend,” noted Naoki Murakami, chief economist at Monex Securities.

In particular there was “increasing uncertainty about the world economy and the (Japanese) government’s dull responses to the chain reaction of the yen’s rise and stock price falls.”

The strong yen has hurt exporters, making their goods more ex-

pensive and eroding companies’ overseas profits when repatriated.

Videogame giant Nintendo on Wednesday more than halved earlier profit forecasts, citing yen strength.

Exports, a crucial driver for Japan’s growth, expanded at their slowest pace this year in August, as the impact of the yen’s strength and softening overseas demand illustrated the risks threatening a fragile recovery.

A strong domestic currency also makes imports cheaper, helping prolong a damaging deflationary cycle where consumers hold off on purchases in the hope of further price drops, clouding future corporate investment.

The reading was made with companies expecting an exchange rate of 89.44 yen to the dollar, higher than in the previous survey but much lower than current levels, which if sustained will further erode confidence.

Japan stepped into the currency markets in September for the first time since 2004 in a bid to stem the yen’s strength after it hit a 15-year high against the dollar, and has repeatedly warned it is ready to do so again.

“Many (negative) factors are piling up,” said Takeshi Minami, economist at Norinchukin Research Institute. “Considering exports and consumer spending are unlikely to be a strong driving force, the economy will be at a

standstill.”

Japan’s economy expanded by an annualised 1.5 percent in the AprilJune period, sharply lower than the previous quarter’s 5.0 percent.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan Monday ordered a supplementary budget for fresh stimulus measures be put together to shore up the flagging economy, after he recently announced 915 billion yen package to add jobs and boost growth.

The Tankan figures are looked at closely by the central bank when formulating monetary policy, and it has come under heavy government pressure recently to do more to help boost the economy.

“The outcome of the latest Tankan will prompt the BoJ to go for additional monetary easing,” said Murakami.

The upbeat September reading among big firms was helped by higher automobile demand ahead of the expiration of government stimulus incentives for green car purchases, said Minami.

But including all industries such as medium and small-sized manufacturers and non-manufacturers, the outlook was gloomy at a reading of minus 10.

The index, which measures the percentage of firms that think business conditions are good minus those that believe they are bad, hit a record low of minus 58 in March 2009.

DUBAI – The fourth sequel of action blockbuster “Mission Impossible” starring Oscar-nominated actor Tom Cruise will be partly filmed in Dubai, the Gulf Arab emirate’s media office said.

Dubai, a regional tourism and trading center, is slowly emerging from a debt crisis following a crash of its property market after a global financial downturn. The slowdown led to billions of dollars in project cancellations and thousands of job losses.

“Preparations for filming in Dubai have been agreed with the production company, Paramount, following two months of meetings and location scouting,” the media office said in a statement.

“Actual filming of the project, that will attract more than 400 industry professionals, is expected to commence within a few weeks,” it added.

Dubai has been on a mission to become a Singapore-style global business and leisure center with fast living and no income tax.

As part of its ambitions, it has strived to become a movie hub in the region, launching a film festival to much fanfare in 2004, and marketing itself as a one-stop-shop for international movie production with projects such as Dubai Studio City (DSC).

Government-run Dubai Media Incorporated will provide technical and staff support for the production of the movie, while DSC will assist with technical and logistic support.

The film will be directed by Brad Bird, known for pictures such as “The Incredibles” which grossed more than $261 million in box office takings in 2004, and “Ratatouille,” which won the Oscar for best animated film in 2007.

WASHINGTON - The US Supreme Court Tuesday agreed to hear a case brought by the heirs of the late Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith, seeking part of the 300-million-dollar fortune she had claimed from her late husband’s estate. The case — the second time that legal wrangling over the fortune of Texas oil tycoon Howard Marshall will go to the nation’s top court — is now likely to be heard early next year.

In March, a California federal appeals court ruled in favor of Marshall’s son, Pierce Marshall, that Smith’s heirs should not receive a penny of the 300 million dollars she claimed from her bill i o n a i r e h u s b a n d ’s f o r t u n e .

Smith, a buxom, blond Playboy magazine centerfold, married Marshall in 1994 when she was 26 and he was 89.

He died 14 months later, with-

out leaving her a penny in his will, despite his 1.6-billion-dollar fortune. Smith began long legal proceedings claiming that her late husband had promised her part of the money, plus some six million dollars worth of presents which he gave her during their marriage.

Both Smith and Pierce Marshall have since died. The Playboy model from a drugs overdose in a Florida hotel in February 2007, and

Marshall from an infection in 2006.

But the legal battle has been taken up their heirs. Smith’s longtime boyfriend Howard Stern has been waging a battle on behalf of her daughter Danielynn, who was seven months old when Smith died.

Danielynn is now in the care of her father Larry Birkhead.

The larger-than-life Smith was once regarded as one of the world’s most desirable women during the 1990s when she replaced supermodel Claudia Schiffer as Guess Jeans model.

However, Smith fell out of the spotlight over the next decade, with dramatic fluctuations in her weight, often appearing to be under the influence of drugs or drink in public.

LOS ANGELES – The actor who played the principal in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” will serve three years of probation after pleading guilty to failing to update his sex offender registry info.

Los Angeles District Attorney’s spokeswoman Jane Robison says Jeffrey Jones entered the plea Tuesday to a felony charge of failing to update his registry information in June.

Jones’ registration was required because he pleaded no contest in 2003 to employing a 14-year-old boy to pose for sexually explicit photos.

The 64-year-old actor is also required to perform 250 hours of community service. His sentence was first reported by celebrity website TMZ.com. Jones has also appeared in “Beetlejuice” and other films.

Extinction threat to one fifth of world’s plants Agence France Presse

LONDON – More than a fifth of the world’s plant species faces the threat of extinction, a trend with potentially catastrophic effects for life on Earth, according to research released on Wednesday. But a separate study cautioned that extinction of mammals had been overestimated and suggested some mammal species thought to have been wiped out may yet be rediscovered.

Stephen Hopper, director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London, said the report on plant loss was the most accurate mapping yet of the threat to the planet’s estimated 380,000 plant species.

“This study confirms what we already suspected, that plants are under threat and the main cause is human-induced habitat loss,” Hopper said at the launch of the socalled Sampled Red List Index. The study, carried out by Kew with the Natural History Museum in London and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), set a “major baseline” for future conservation efforts, he said.

“We cannot sit back and watch plant species disappear — plants are the basis of all life on Earth, providing clean air, water, food and fuel. All animal and bird life depends on them, and so do we,” Hopper added.

The study comes ahead of a meeting in Nagoya, Japan, from October 18 to 29, where members of the UN’s Biodiversity Convention will set new targets to save endangered wildlife. Craig Hilton-Taylor of the IUCN said he hoped the Nagoya meeting would set the goal of preventing the extinction of any known threatened species by 2020.

“We want to make sure that plants will not be forgotten,” he said. In their study, researchers assessed almost 4,000 species, of which 22 percent were classed as threatened, especially in tropical rain forest.

Plants were more threatened than birds, as threatened as mammals and less threatened than amphibians or corals, it said.

HELSINKI – The Northern Lights have petered out during the second half of this decade, becoming rarer than at any other time in more than a century, the Finnish Meteorological Institute said Tuesday.

The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, generally follow an 11-year “solar cycle”, in which the frequency of the phenomena rises to a maximum and then tapers off into a minimum and then repeats the cycle.

“The solar minimum was officially in 2008, but this minimum has been going on and on and on,” researcher Noora Partamies told AFP. “Only in the past half a year have we seen more activity, but we don’t really know whether we’re coming out of this minimum,” she added.

The Northern Lights, a blaze of coloured patterns in the northern skies, are triggered by solar winds crashing into the earth and being drawn to the magnetic poles, wreaking havoc on electrons in the parts of the at-

mosphere known as the ionosphere and magnetosphere.

So a dimming of the Northern Lights is a signal that activity on the sun which causes solar winds, such as solar flares and sun sports, is also quieting down. For researchers like Partamies, it is the first time they can observe through a network of modern observation stations what happens to this solar cycle when it becomes as badly disrupted as it is now.

“We’re waiting to see what happens, is the next maximum going to be on time, is it going to be late, is it going to be huge?”

Partamies said.

During the cycle’s peak in 2003, the station on Norway’s Svalbard island near the North Pole, showed that the Northern Lights were visible almost every single night of the auroral season, which excludes the nightless summer months.

That figure has fallen to less than 50y percent, while the southernmost station, situated in southern Finland, has been registering only two to five instances annually for the past few years.

It all started in Italy, with a protest against the opening of a McDonalds’ restaurant led by Carlo Petrini, who went on to launch a movement devoted to “good, clean and fair” food.

Since then Slow Food — as it became known — has spread to 130 countries and spawned countless sister trends around the world, from slow cities to slow money, slow design, slow travel and even slow sex.

There is also slow parenting — the simple art of taking time for one’s children — and slow wear which promotes sustainable clothes, all carrying a common message into every corner of our lives, winning millions of followers around the world.

“The slow philosophy is not about doing everything at a snail’s pace,” Honore told AFP in an interview. “It’s about seeking to do everything at the right speed. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow, and sometimes completely still.”

When the slow guru gave a talk about the philosophy last year, a priest in the audience came up to him afterwards and confessed he had just had a revelation: “Lately I have been praying too fast.”

After two decades spent watching the movement grow, Honore now believes it is only a matter of time before it hits the mainstream: “We are at a historical turning point,” he said.

Even high-tech firms — after decades spent driving the acceleration of the global economy — are now recognising its ill-effects, leading Google, IBM and others to launch a research group into information overload.

BASEL - Bastian Schweinsteiger led a second-half comeback by Bayern Munich against Swiss league champions Basel on Tuesday to earn a 2-1 victory in their Champions League Group E tie. Basel had taken an early lead when Switzerland striker Alexander Frei opened the scoring with a superb goal on 18 minutes before Schweinsteiger netted a second-half penalty followed by an 89th-minute tap in.

“I am very relieved, we fought hard for the victory,” said Bayern coach Louis van Gaal. “I am pleased we came back from 1-0 down, we started very well. It was a bit unlucky that Basel scored the first time they got over the halfway line and with their first shot.

“We lost a bit of confidence and we played badly in the first half, but I am happy for Schweinsteiger and I am happy we have six points.” This was Bayern’s second Champions League win after they opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Roma, while Basel had been stung by a 2-1 defeat in their first group match in Romania against CFR Cluj.

Basel coach Thorsten Fink, who won three Bundesliga titles as a player with Bayern in 1997-2003, rattled his old side as his players closed down the Germans in midfield.

The Swiss side made a strong start and deserved to take the lead against last year’s finalists.

Basel captain Franco Costanzo made two excellent saves in the opening stages, both from Germany midfielder Toni Kroos, before the hosts went ahead.

Swiss striker Marco Streller held off Bayern defender Holger Badstuber deep in the penalty area and backheeled his pass into the path of Frei, who deftly curled his shot into the top right-hand corner.

Basel nearly went further ahead when midfielder Benjamin Huggel hit the back of the net after latching onto a Frei free-kick, but his effort was ruled offside. With his side 1-0 down at the break, van Gaal brought on strikers Mario Gomez and Ivica Olic.

Munich got back on level terms when Germany midfielder Thomas Mueller was tackled heavily in the penalty area and Schweinsteiger sent Constanzo the wrong way from the spot on 56 minutes. Olic had a golden chance to put his side ahead on 67 minutes when there was a goalmouth scramble, but the Swiss team managed to clear the danger.

Bayern grabbed the three points when Badstuber curled in a free-kick and Schweinsteiger enjoyed a simple tap-in to claim his second with barely a minute remaining.

PARIS - Chelsea and Arsenal maintained their perfect records to edge closer to the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday, while Europe’s elite club competition revelled in a little Brazilian magic. Chelsea handed former player Didier Deschamps a miserable Stamford Bridge return as his French champions Marseille suffered a 2-0 defeat.

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, rocked by their shock 3-2 Premier League defeat by West Brom, overcame a testing night, as well as faulty floodlights, in Serbia to see off 10-man Partizan Belgrade 3-1. Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea had suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season at Manchester City on Saturday, just days after crashing out of the League Cup against Newcastle.

But there were no such problems against Marseille thanks to an early goal from John Terry and Nicolas Anelka’s first-half penalty. The win left Chelsea top of Group F, ahead of Spartak Moscow on goal difference, after two games of their latest bid to win Europe’s elite club competition for the first time.

Ancelotti said: “We had a good analysis about the last defeat, then we prepared this game well and played a good game. Now those defeats are forgotten.”

Deschamps was scathing of his team, who have lost both of their opening games. “We were dominated both technically and physically.

There was a huge difference between the two sides,” said the 1998 French World Cup winner.

Arsenal are top of Group H after

Wozniacki qualifies for WTA championships Agence France Presse

TOKYO - World number two Caroline Wozniacki secured a spot in the season-ending WTA championships when she reached the quarter-finals at the Pan Pacific Open women’s tournament on Wednesday. Wozniacki, who was runner-up in last season’s US Open, needed only 70 minutes to beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-1, 6-2 to book a place in the WTA championships in Doha from October 26.

“I’m really happy to be playing in Doha. It was a goal for me going into the year to be in the top eight.

I’m really happy that I’m the first one to qualify,” said the 20-year-old Dane. Wozniacki fired an ace to save a break point in the third game, and then took five straight games as Pavlyuchenkova struggled with her serve, hitting a total of seven double faults — one on a break point.

The Russian, trailing 1-4 in the second set, finally broke Wozniacki in the sixth game of the second set, but the deficit was too big for Pavlyuchenkova to come back.

“I feel I’m playing some good tennis. Today it was a tough match, even though the score was 6-1, 6-2.

Anastasia is a good player, so I knew I had to be focused all the way through and I’m happy about the

result,” Wozniacki said.

The quarter-final will see the Dane take on her friend Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, who eliminated Andrea Petkovic of Germany 6-3, 6-3. Second seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia, fifth seed Francesca Schiavone, former champion Elena Dementieva of Russia as well as Victoria Azarenka also safely went through.

Zvonareva, who reached her career highest at fourth in the world after finishing runner-up at the US Open, took the last seven games in a row to score a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Roberta Vinci of Italy.

“Overall, I think I played a good match, but there is still room for improvement, particularly with consistency. I need to be more consistent and I didn’t show my best to-

day, but I played well when I needed to,” said Zvonareva. She set up a quarter-final meeting with Beijing Olympic gold medallist Dementieva, the seeded seventh, who had to come back from an early service break down to beat Italy’s Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-2.

DENVER – Carmelo Anthony is focused on hoops, not the hoopla surrounding his future in Denver. Anthony joined his Nuggets teammates on the first day of training camp Tuesday, calling the court his “safe haven,” a place where he doesn’t have to “deal with all the other stuff.”

For now, Anthony remains a member of the Nuggets after a person with knowledge of the discussions said a four-way deal that would have sent Anthony to New Jersey was “dead.” The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the trade.

Still, Anthony’s days in Denver could very well be numbered. Anthony’s powder blue jersey, soaked in sweat after a more than two-hour practice, was proof of an honest day’s work Tuesday. The All-Star forward became almost agitated when asked if he might give anything less than 100 percent considering his uncertainty with the team.

“I love the game too much to disrespect the game like that,” said Anthony, who averaged 28.2 points last season in leading the Nuggets to their second straight Northwest Division title. “Anytime I step on the court, I’m going to give it my all, regardless of what’s going on, what’s the situation.

“This is basketball. I focus on basketball — it’s something I know how to do and I love to do.

As far as my effort on the court, nobody can question that.”

Nuggets coach George Karl gave Anthony an “A” for his effort after practice, saying he thought his star was “very professional, very mature.” Karl remains hopeful that Anthony will stick around.

Anthony has yet to sign off on a three-year, $65 million extension that’s been on the table since June, leading the Nuggets to explore trade options.

The potential trade involving Denver, New Jersey, Charlotte and Utah hit a road block over the weekend and then withered when a deal wasn’t reached by an imposed deadline of Tuesday.

AP Sources: Armstrong team staffer to talk to jury Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES – A staff member of Lance Armstrong’s Team RadioShack, who also has a connection to Floyd Landis, is expected to testify Wednesday before a grand jury investigating allegations of doping in professional cycling, two people with knowledge of the probe said.

Allen Lim, an exercise physiologist whom Landis said helped him cheat with doping during his career, was called to appear before the panel in Los Angeles, according to the two people, who spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the investigation was ongoing.

Lim would be the latest witness in a probe that has featured some of cycling’s biggest names, including Armstrong, Landis and Tour de France winner Greg LeMond.

Lim, who joined Team RadioShack for the 2010 season, has denied the allegations by Landis, who also accused seventime Tour winner Armstrong of doping.

One of the people who spoke on condition of anonymity also told The Associated Press that former cyclist Kevin Livingston also has been subpoenaed and could testify before the grand jury as early as Wednesday. Livingston was a U.S. Postal Service team member with Armstrong in 2000.

Armstrong became a more important figure in the probe this spring after Landis dropped longstanding denials and admitted he used performance-enhancing drugs.

In doing so, he accused Armstrong and others of systematic drug use.

Landis won the Tour in 2006 but was stripped of his title for doping.

Landis also made his accusations in an e-mail, and Lim was mentioned in it. Armstrong has vehemently denied the accusations, and his attorney has described Landis as a “serial liar.”

Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles, declined comment when asked about whether Lim and Livingston were appearing before the grand jury.

Mike Gascoyne agrees new five-year Lotus deal In what will be interpreted as a further indication of Lotus’ burning ambition, the team’s chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne has pledged his future to the Anglo/Malaysian F1 2010 newcomer with a new five-year contract, as the Englishman vows to ‘finish his career’ there.

Tony Fernandes has promised a raft of exciting announcements in the forthcoming weeks, with the confirmation that he plans to revive the iconic ‘Team Lotus’ moniker from 2011 onwards – albeit since disputed by Proton expected to be followed by news that an engine-supply and technical tie-up arrangement has been agreed with Renault, and that both Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen are remaining onboard for a second consecutive season.

As the Hingham-based operation bids to accelerate its march up the grand prix grid, however, the long-term commitment of Gascoyne – a man who has experience of working for McLaren, Sauber, Tyrrell, Jordan, Renault, Toyota and Force India over the course of a long and successful career in the top flight, and who as such is highly-respected within the paddock – is a major boon, with the 47-yearold’s strong leadership and technical direction credited with having played

a major role in seeing Lotus comfortably emerge as the best of the F1 2010 debutants, ahead of rivals Virgin and Hispania (HRT).

“Having started the team from scratch with Tony, it was always my intention to finish my career here,” he affirmed, “so it’s great to have formally agreed a five-year deal. I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to Tony, Din, Nasa, Riad and the whole team, and I’m extremely grateful to everyone involved in Lotus Racing for having the confidence to take this into a long-term contract. We’ve had a great start to our partnership together, and I’m looking forward to continuing that for the next five years, and even beyond that.”

Indeed, Pedrosa has been in consistent form of late, finishing no lower than second in the last four races, though it will still take two or more non-finishes from Lorenzo for him to the Honda rider to make significant in-roads in that lead.

Nonetheless, he is confident he will be in the right position to capitalise should such an eventuality occur, starting with this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi – Honda’s home event. “We start the most intense period of the season this weekend, with five races in six weeks, and my goal is to make the best possible finish to the championship. I think we’re very strong at the moment and we must take full advantage of it.

“This final stage begins in Japan - the most important race for Honda because it’s their home Grand Prix - and I’m looking forward to getting to the circuit and starting the preparations for this special race. I would love to win at Motegi because I’ve never won here in MotoGP and I’ve been on the podium for the last two seasons.

“I always feel very motivated in Japan. I love the circuit and the atmosphere you feel there. The fans are very enthusiastic but also educated, and I feel a lot of support. We couldn’t race in Motegi at the beginning of the season due to the problems with the volcanic ash clouds, so I think the fans will be even more excited to welcome us.

“It will be very important to start this tour of Asia in the best way. As I’ve said before, I will approach this final section of the season simply thinking race by race. We’re doing a good job in the team, the RC212V is working well - we know it better and better - and so this a good chance for us to try to win more races and to finish the year in the best possible way.”
