MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s government is appealing for more help in its fight against powerful militants who have recently intensified their attacks.

President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed said Monday it was unrealistic to expect the forces of an ill-equipped government to battle the al-Qaidalinked group al-Shabab.

Ahmed compared al-Shabab’s attack on a Mogadishu hotel that killed more than 30 people last week to the violence against governments in Iraq, Yemen and Afghanistan.

He said the world must give Somalia’s violence the same priority accorded to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which Washington considers to be a major threat. Al-Shabab carried out twin bombings in Uganda during the World Cup final, killing 76 people.

Bali News DKP requested to use beach cleaner for removing rubbish of Sanur Beach Denpasar (Bali Post)—

One of the tourist destinations owned by the Denpasar is Sanur Beach. The existence of this white sandy beach was categorized into a quite favorite tourist attraction among foreign and domestic tourists. Therefore, sanitation of the coastal area stretching in the east of Sanur Village should be given special attention. To maintain the sanitation of the beach, Denpasar Sanitation and Landscaping Services (DKP) was asked to use beach cleaner to clean off the rubbish in the area.

This was conveyed by Denpasar Mayor I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra in the midst of turtle hatchling release in front of the Puri Santrian Hotel, Sanur, last Sunday (Aug 29). Mayor Rai Mantra assessed if it was only handled by humans, it would not cover the entire area. “Hopefully, DKP could provide beach cleaner to amass the rubbish carried away by water currents,” the mayor told the Head of DKP Denpasar, I Ketut Wisada.

Not only that, the mayor also expected to perform a general cleaning at least once a month to keep the Sanur Beach clean all the times. The action was very important to inspire all people so they cared about environmental sanitation. Moreover,

tourism businesspeople made the beach as an invaluable asset to attract tourists. “Please also be scheduled a general cleaning, at least once a month,” the mayor Rai Mantra requested.

In response to such request, Wisada confessed to have prepared beach cleaners especially used on the beach for collecting trashes on the sand. In the near future, the beach cleaners could be distributed, so that it could be used on the beach. “We have designed a beach cleaner that can help expedite the handling of garbage on the coastal area,” said Wisada last Sunday.

In the meantime, the mayor considered the environmental issues, including the waste had to obtain spe-

cial attention. Moreover, Sanur area becoming a tourist attraction should give priority to the caring attitude towards the environment. Not only government that should be active, all components had to get involved in the efforts to preserve the environment.

It was said, Denpasar having a small region remained to be haunted by environmental problem. For example, it encountered the problems of waste, garbage and other environmental issues requiring serious attention because the achievement of the development could not be seen from physical aspect only. “Please do no let this environmental preservation be neglected, just because of physical development,” said the number one man in Denpasar last Sunday. As for plan of Jalan Legian repair, Government should provide parking lot Mangupura (Bali Post)—

Members of the Badung House asked the government to facilitate the provision of parking lot and ensure the availability of shuttle bus in the area of Jalan Legian and its surroundings. This would be followed up by the re-arrangement of Jalan Legian becoming the world class infrastructure.

Head of Commission B of Badung House, Putu Parwata, last Sunday (Aug 29), said that one of the constraints of the re-arrangement for Jalan Legian was the parking problem. If complete re-arrangement of the road was undertaken, there would be traffic diversion and it would slightly hamper the economic growth in the local area.

In the future, if Jalan Legian would have been well ordered, there should be no more parking problems using the road body. “If

the road has been planned in good concept it will create a beautiful environment and landscape. As consequence, it will also make tourists comfortable. However, this can only happen provided that the parking service has been well regulated and parking lot along the way is not allowed,” he said.

For that purpose, the government should facilitate the provision of parking lot for Kuta and Legian area.

Badung Regency Government should be able to release the land and build a multilevel parking lot around Legian. Meanwhile, the entrepreneurs having no parking spaces should be obliged to take advantage of the parking spaces determined. To realize it, the regency government was asked to work closely with communities and entrepreneurs.

In addition to parking lots, Parwata also urged the government to maximize the shuttle bus. It in-

cluded regulating the flow of trucks transporting goods. “It aims to prevent the crowdedness of the road,” he said.

Meanwhile, another member of Commission B, Wayan Puspa Negara, revealed that endeavor to beautify Jalan Legian had actually been pioneered a long time ago.

Studies on the restructuring of Jalan Legian had even been made since 1997. Currently, the blue print of Jalan Legian had been prepared.

“Model of beautification drawing of Jalan Legian has existed. So, we are just waiting for the implementation,” said I Wayan Puspa Negara.

According to Puspa, breakthrough of Jalan Legian re-arrangement should not be delayed because it was worried that conditions of the existing roads would be quite chaotic, both in terms of infrastructure and awareness of road users. Hence, it needed re-arranging completely. (ded)

Avoid Breast Cancer Apply Self Checking Denpasar (Bali Post) –

Breast cancer is one of the death causes to female after cervical cancer and can be prevented from early stage. It can be done by self checking the breasts at least once in a month.

The checking, according to dr.

Ananto Sidohutomo, MARS, should be done routinely every month on the 7 th day from the 1 st day of your menstruation or on the same date for those who are menopause.

During a seminar event on Cervical and Breast Cancers Early Prevention on Sunday (29/ 8), Ananto explained this checking. First step is by standing in front of the mirror half naked.

Stand up straight with both hands on the sides of the body. Check the breasts and its surrounds also compare the two, “Normally there’ll be a slight different size.

Breast feeding breasts tends to be bigger. The different size should never change.”

Then see if there’s any lumps, or skin looked swollen, redden, pulled skin, nerve can be seen, spots like orange skin or wounds, “Aerola area or red part around the nipples need to be examined as well. Is it swollen, its color

gone lighter or darker, changing sizes to bigger or narrowing, or there are wounds and starting to bleed.”

The nipples are also important, is it on a certain direction or pulled in, gives out liquid, blood and there’s a wound, “Do the same thing by turning around body to the right and left.”

This checking was then continued with positioning hands on the waist with chest brought forward.

Bring up the hand above the head and see if the breast is pulled up or not and is there a difference on its skin as stated. Then continue it by positioning the right hand on the side of the body, while index, middle and ring fingers of the left go through the armpit and the right arm to feel if there are any bumps, do the same thing to the left one as well.

If a bump founded, Ananto suggested not all bumps are cancer although it will be great to be checked early, “If it’s still early stage, it can still be treated and the women won’t lose their breasts.”

Badung Central Government Needs To Save Electricity Mangupura (Bali Post) –

The Badung Central Government electricity bill has reached IDR 5 Billion in the Mended Badung Regional Budget and Expenses Year 2010 which is hard to be corrected or lessen. Even corrected, the number is not significant. So to have an efficient fee, the central government has to save electricity.

This was mentioned by Head of Badung House of Representative Commision C, I Nyoman Satria. It was revealed, last Sunday (29/8), that Badung Representatives are not going to correct that fee, “I already counted, and the correction will be no more than IDR 50 Million.”

As its not significant, it became not a problem for the Representatives that the electricity bill increased IDR 4 Billion before the mended Budget. Besides that legislatives also hoped a left over fee

can be moved to Silpa (Fee left over, red), “If there’s left we bring it to Silpa.”

Other things to be thought were the huge mended fee and it’s concentrated on one fee.

Even forgiving how much is used for the electricity bill, yet Satria said, the Representatives are still reminding how important it is to save energy. All Regional Work Unit Area (SKPD) in Badung Region Governemnet have been “warned” to use electricity as needed.

Meanwhile, Head of Badung Government Public Section, I Nengah Ngarta, mentioned this electricity bill included the whole area of the central government, starting from Regent Office, House of Representative Office, each SKPD and Badung Government Utility.

As a saving step, Ngarta asked all SKPD to use electricity well, “We already asked each SKPD to save, if it’s time to go home lights and AC not needed should be switched off.” (ded)

Empowerment process required to make tourism benefits perceivable Denpasar (Bali Post)—

The data show that tourism sector can give contribution to the creation of job opportunities amounting to 7 percent in Indonesia. Regions having developed tourism indicate that welfare of the people is more likely to increase if compared to regions of less developed tourism. If poverty is still encountered in tourism regions, never blame the tourism sector. Additionally, it is not necessarily to leave tourism. To make tourism more beneficial for local communities, we need to increase the empowerment process on the quality of human resources and provide opportunities for people to work in this sector—of course should be armed with adequate skills. Thus, social welfare can be increased.

These tips were conveyed by the Head of Human Resources Development Agency, Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the RI, Prof. Dr. I Gde Pitana in the national seminar entitled ‘Tourism and Poverty Eradication’ in Udayana University, last Saturday (Aug 28). The seminar was organized

by Faculty of Tourism, Udayana University in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to celebrate the 48th Dies Natalis of Udayana University. The event was inaugurated by Deputy Rector III of Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Made Suastra accompanied by the Dean of Faculty of Tourism, I Putu Anom, and resumed with the book launching entitled Pariwisata Mengikis Kemiskinan (Tourism Alleviates Poverty) edited by Hengky Hermantoro et al., and a panel discussion with four speakers consisting of Hengky Hermantoro (Ministry of Culture and Tourism), I Nyoman Darma Putra (Faculty of Letters, Udayana University), IGA Oka Mahagangga (Faculty of Tourism), and I Wayan Suyadnya (doctoral candidate of a university in Germany). The seminar was attended by students, faculty and gen-

eral public of some 250 participants.

Meanwhile, Udayana University is the first university in Indonesia opening the doctoral program on Tourism Studies. In other campuses, tourism program is the concentration offered in non-tourism studies. Sebagai a professor majoring in the field of tourism of Udayana University, Prof. Pitana encouraged the doctoral program of Tourism to produce academicians and studies on tourism that could help the state resolve the problems of poverty.

Tourists rise, poverty declines

In his paper denoting the essence of the book on pro-people tourism, Darma Putra submitted the data of ten years, namely 1999-2009. They clearly showed that tourist arrival and poverty rates were positively correlated.

“If the number of tourist visit goes up, poverty rates will decline,” said Darma Putra. To strengthen his argument, he showed the data of foreign tourists and the poverty rates nationally, and two of the regions respectively the North Sumatra and Bali.

In 1999, the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia was 4.7 million and poverty rate was 47.49 million.

Meanwhile, in 2009, foreign tourist arrivals increased to 6.4 million, while the poverty rate decreased to 32.53 million.

Similarly, said Darma, comparable condition happened to Bali, too. In 1999, the number of foreign tourist was 1.3 million and the poverty rate was 257,800 people, while in 2009, the number of foreign tourists reached to 2.2 million, while the poverty rate decreased to 181,700 people.

“When the visit of foreign tourists decreased due to terrorist attacks, the number of poverty in Bali rose,” said Darma, co-author the book entitled Tourism, Development and Terrorism in Bali (Ashgate, 2007).

However, Darma immediately re-

minded that it was naive if the decline in poverty was said to have been entirely caused by tourism industry, at the same it was also wrong to ignore the contribution of tourism to poverty reduction. “Nationally, tourism could create job opportunities for about 6.5 million. It meant that such amount of residents could escape from (extreme) poverty,” Darma said.

Darma acknowledged that statistical data issued by the Central Bureau of Statistics and other government sources were often considered to be abstract and did not accurately reflect the reality.

In his presentation, he gave concrete examples namely the child creativity of a young hawker who sold kites at Tanah Lot tourist destination. Within a day, the vendor could sell 10-15 kites, costing at an average of IDR 50 thousand. About half (IDR 25 thousand) of them was profits. Within a month, total revenues obtained by the kite vendor approximately reached IDR 7.5 million.

Everyone needs to actively and creatively take advantage of the opportunities in tourism.

“If several tourists come, but people are lazy, not creative and always feel poor, the growth of tourism will be in vain or incapable of reducing or eradicate the poverty,” said Darma.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, I Made Kusumanegara, said that other than being capable of improving the quality of the community, tourism was also feared to impoverish the local communities. On that account, it was required a commitment, seriousness, social responsibility and high moral to develop the tourism in order to improve the quality of community’s life. “This seminar turns important in the efforts to produce a variety of thoughts on tourism development and poverty eradication,” he said. Myanmar parties complain election fee too high AP

YANGON, Myanmar – Political parties challenging Myanmar’s ruling junta in the country’s first election in two decades said they can’t afford to compete in every constituency because of the exorbitant fees charged to register candidates.

All candidates contesting the Nov. 7 elections are required to pay the Election Commission a fee of 500,000 kyat ($500) by Monday — a staggering sum in a country where the average schoolteacher’s monthly salary is $70.

The junta is portraying the elections as a key step in shifting to civilian rule after five decades of military domination, but critics call them a sham and say the military shows little sign of relinquishing control. The system of registering candidates is one of many that critics point to as weighted in the junta’s favor.

The junta announced the election date on Aug. 13 and gave parties just over two weeks to submit their candidate lists by the end of

the day Monday. Parties complained the deadline was too rushed to allow them to enlist potential candidates nationwide and that the registration fee was prohibitively expensive. One petitioned the junta to reduce the registration fee and extend the deadline but was ignored.

Candidates are vying for a total of 1,162 seats, including 498 seats in Myanmar’s two-chamber Union Parliament and 664 seats spread among 14 regional parliaments.

Parties typically pay candidate registration fees, but, because of a lack of funds, many say they have been forced to scale back the number of contenders making it impossible to effectively challenge to junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party, or USDP, which is fielding a candidate for every seat available.

The party of detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is boycotting the election, which it says is undemocratic and unfair.

Her National League for Democracy party won the last election in 1990 by a landslide, but the junta refused to honor the results.

Karzai criticizes anti-terror strategy AP

KABUL, Afghanistan – President Hamid Karzai renewed his criticism of coalition strategy in fighting Afghanistan’s stubborn insurgency, saying it has thus far produced nothing but civilian deaths.

Meanwhile, a district chief from eastern Afghanistan was killed Monday by a bomb placed in his car that exploded as he was entering a government compound to attend a meeting of provincial security and political leaders.

Insurgents had apparently planned for the bomb that killed Syad Mohammad Palawan to explode inside the governor’s compound in Nangarhar province’s capital of Jalalabad, said provincial police spokesman Ghafor Khan.

Officials were meeting at the compound Monday to discuss strategies for battling the insurgency and improving governance in the volatile province. Khan said three of

Palawan’s bodyguards were wounded in the attack.

Palawan’s district of Lal Pur lies on the mountainous border with Pakistan overlooking infiltration routes for Arab and other foreign fighters linked to al-Qaida and aided by Pakistani militants.

Karzai’s sharp comments delivered Sunday fit a pattern of greater outspokenness by the Afghan leader as he appeals for support among the beleaguered Afghan public.

In a meeting with visiting German Parliament speaker Norbert Lammert, Karzai said there was a “serious need” to alter strategy against the Taliban and other groups linked to al-Qaida, the presidential

office said.

“There should be a review of the strategy in the fight against terrorism, because the experience of the last eight years showed that the fight in the villages of Afghanistan has been ineffective apart from causing civilian casualties,” Karzai was quoted as saying.

Karzai’s statements come at a time when the Obama administration is ratcheting up pressure on the Afghan leader to do more to stamp out corruption. The Afghan government maintains that the U.S. should instead focus more on other fronts, including pressuring Pakistan to shut down insurgent sanctuaries.

Last week, Karzai also criticized the U.S. plan to begin withdrawing troops starting next July and said the war on terror cannot succeed as long as the Taliban and their allies maintain safe havens in Pakistan.

North Korean leader Kim may be headed home AP

BEIJING – North Korean leader Kim Jong Il appeared Monday to be winding up a six-day visit to China that fueled speculation he was seeking aid and drumming up support for a succession plan involving his youngest son.

Reporters have followed a train and a 35-vehicle motorcade — apparently used by the reclusive Kim — around several cities in northeast China since late Wednesday. Kim, 68, rarely leaves North Korea and when he does travels by special train.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency and Kyodo news agency from Japan both said Kim’s train had left Harbin, apparently for Tumen on the border with North Korea.

North Korea never announces Kim’s trips until after he returns home, and China has refused to say if he is in the country, even though a Japanese television station broadcast a grainy picture of him surrounded by security guards.

Kim was reportedly accompanied by his son, Kim Jong Un, believed to be in his 20s. Many North Korea watchers predict the son will be appointed to a key party position at a ruling Workers’ Party meeting early next month — the first such gathering in decades — as part of a succession process.

To pull off the event with sufficient fanfare, North Korea will need Chinese aid, particularly following the devastating floods that battered the country’s northwest this month, analysts said.

Yonhap said Kim briefly stopped in

Mudanjiang on his way to Tumen, citing unidentified sources in the city. It said Kim visited Beishan park to pay his respect to a monument commemorating an anti-Japanese movement.

The report said the park is also related to his father’s anti-Japanese guerrilla warfare but didn’t elaborate.

After staying about one hour, Yonhap said Kim’s train began heading again to Tumen, where security was high Monday.

More than 45 pockets of blood are donated of 350cc each.

Meanwhile, the baby turtle release will be done on Friday morning, 10 September 2010 at the beach in front of Bali Niksoma. There are 70 of baby turtles will be released to coincide with the 7th anniversary of this stylish and chic tropical beachfront boutique resort.

Thousands of Pura (Temple) Dalem Agung, Keramas Village, Blahbatuk Sub district, Gianyar on Sunday (29/8) yesterday followed a procession of bringing God Pengrajeg Besakih to Pura Dalem Agung.

The procession is in preparation of several ceremonies which are Mamungkah, Mupuk Pedagingan (both to restore spiritual power of the temple), Ngenteg Linggih (ensure the stability of the spiritual power of the temple), Dirgayusa Gumi, Padudusan Agung and Ngusaba Dalem.

The procession of bringing ida Pengrajeg and nuur Pakuluh in Besakih Temple held since 8 am wita. The procession goes on in Pura Penataran Besakih led by Priests from Geria Kumpul, Geria Ageng Keramas and Besakih Temple. The procession was also accompanied by sacred dances such as Rejang Desa and Baris Gede from children of Pura Dalem Agung Keramas.

After that, thousands of the prayers came to welcome the God in the streets of Keramas Village. The Ceremony Manager, Ida Bagus Made Suarjana, mentioned the procession is one of the processes which peak will happen at 14th September 2010. For mapekelem to Gunung Agung and Batur Lake is at 5th September, Mekiis and mepekelem to the sea (6/9), mepada alit (small scale cleansing) (8/9), tawur agung procession and mapedanaan (9/9), Mepada agung (13/9). All the ceremonies will finish on 2nd October.

This Pura Dalem is one of the pura Dalem Kahyangan Desa from four of them in this village. This Pura is lived by 800 Keramas Village residents, “They, men and women all come to bring God Pengrajeg.”

The ceremony took the highest level as it’s been planned for a long time. Actually the last time it’s done has been 60 years ago. This ceremony, connecting to the renovation done to the temple, had a total fee of reaching IDR 1,8 Billion which was received from each prayers of the Pura as much as IDR 1 Million per family, donators and committee collecting fees. SYDNEY (AFP) – Up to 16 women could take part in a 33 million US dollar sexual harassment case involving David Jones, Australia’s most exclusive department store, lawyers for the chief complainant said Monday.

Publicist Kristy Fraser-Kirk is suing the top-end store and its former chief, Mark McInnes, over unwelcome advances which allegedly included placing his hand under her clothes and attempting to kiss her.

The 27-year-old’s lawyers told the Federal Court that six more David Jones workers had come forward to support Fraser-Kirk’s claims and were expected to take part in the landmark suit, in addition to four already involved.

Rachel Francois, Fraser-Kirk’s lawyer, said three other employees had also made complaints against other David Jones staff, while two former

staff of McInnes from another company had also come forward, making a total of 16.

McInnes was not in court but he issued a statement shortly after the hearing insisting that he would strongly defend the new claims.

“This is an intolerable position.

These new allegations are unstated, unsourced and unsubstantiated,” said McInnes.

“My lawyers have advised me that the correct place to respond is in the courtroom and I look forward to defending myself vigorously against these claims at the appropriate time.”

Fraser-Kirk is seeking 37 million

Australian dollars (33 million US) in damages, making her case Australia’s largest ever sexual harassment claim.

Francois said she wanted some matters in the case, including questions of morality and community standards, to be assessed by a jury.

The hearing follows a weekend report that David Jones had offered Fraser-Kirk an out-of-court settlement.

McInnes resigned in June after admitting behaving “in a manner unbecoming of a chief executive to a female staff member” at two functions earlier this year, but said last week he would vigorously contest FraserKirk’s allegations.

MANILA, Philippines – Hong Kong forensic experts on Monday inspected the bullet-peppered bus in which a hijacker killed eight tourists in Manila last week, as the Philippines worked to calm China’s outrage over the bloodshed.

Anger has been rising in Hong Kong since the Aug. 23 carnage in which a disgruntled former Philippine police officer took the busload of tourists from the Chinese territory hostage in a bid to win his job back. Hong Kongers have blasted a failed rescue operation and botched negotiations that seemed to enrage the hostage taker, who was eventually killed by a police sharpshooter.

Organizers said about 80,000 people marched in Hong Kong on Sunday, denouncing the Philippines and demanding justice for the dead.

President Benigno Aquino III has ordered a thorough investigation into the crisis and the police response, and on Monday the Philippines allowed Hong Kong forensic experts to inspect the bus.

“We want to appease them and show that we’re not hiding anything,” Philippine National Police spokesman Agrimero Cruz said.

“This is a show of transparency.”

Guided by Filipino investigators, the Hong Kong team used flashlights as they looked at the bloodied passenger compartment, taking pictures of bullet holes and shattered windows. Another checked the bus tires shot out by

police to prevent the hostage-taker from moving out of a police cordon.

The Hong Kong investigators refused to talk to a throng of Chinese and Filipino journalists.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima met Hong Kong officials Monday to discuss the protocol for their investigation in Manila, while stressing that the Philippines still was in charge of the probe.

Philippine investigators plan to question Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, who helped oversee the hostage negotiations, as well as journalists who interviewed hostagetaker Rolando Mendoza by phone during the drama, de Lima said.

They may also travel to Hong Kong to talk to survivors of the nearly 12-hour standoff.

The investigation will take two to three weeks to complete, and until then those involved will not be allowed to comment publicly, de Lima said.

Still it is unclear if that will be enough to stem the anger in Hong Kong, which has discouraged its residents from traveling to the Philippines. About 140,000 Hong Kong tourists visit the Philippines yearly and hundreds have canceled planned trips.

Concerns have also been raised about a possible backlash on the more than 100,000 Filipinos working in the territory, mostly as maids.

Also Monday, Filipino anticrime activists placed flowers at the site of the carnage in a Manila park.

One carried a wooden cross bearing the names of the slain hostages.

2 Russian pilots kidnapped in Darfur AP

KHARTOUM, Sudan – Gunmen in Darfur kidnapped two Russian pilots working for a company transporting food for international peacekeepers, Sudanese media reported Monday.

Sudanese military spokesman Sawarmy Khaled said the pilots were kidnapped on Sunday in Nyala, the provincial capital of South Darfur province, and the army had surrounded the neighborhood where

they are believed to be held.

The kidnapping comes just a month after another Russian helicopter pilot was abducted by janjaweed militiamen in Darfur after his helicpter was forced to land. The pilot, who also worked for the joint U.N.-African Union peacekeepers, was eventually recovered.

In its account of Sunday’s kidnapping, the Sudanese daily al-Sahafa said three pilots were kidnapped as they left the Nyala airport heading for downtown.

Darfur has been in turmoil since February 2003, when ethnic African rebels took up arms against the Arabdominated Sudanese government in Khartoum, claiming discrimination and neglect.

Khartoum is accused of retaliating by arming local nomadic Arab tribes and unleashing militias known as the janjaweed on civilian populations — a charge the government denies.

The U.N. estimates 300,000 people have died and 2.5 million have been displaced by the conflict.

Thousands flee as Indonesian volcano erupts Agence France-Presse

KABANJAHE - An Indonesian volcano spewed a vast cloud of smoke and ash high into the air on Monday, disrupting flights and sending thousands more people into temporary shelters, officials said.

Airlines were warned to avoid remote Mount Sinabung in northern Sumatra as it erupted for a second day after springing to life for the first time in four centuries.

“It erupted again at 6:30 am (2330 GMT) and lasted about 15 minutes.

The smoke and ash reached at least 2,000 metres (6,600 feet),” government volcanologist Agus Budianto said.

The eruption was bigger than Sunday’s when 2,460-metre (8,100foot) Sinabung rumbled into action for the first time since 1600, adding its name to the list of 69 active volcanoes in the sprawling Southeast Asian archipelago. Another 3,000 people arrived at temporary shelters on Monday, bringing the total in government care to 21,000, disaster management official Andes Mbaga said.

Sixteen shelters have been set up to accommodate people who evacuated their villages as ash and stones fell around the fertile farming area early Sunday.

Witnesses said a strong smell of sulphur filled the air and many people fled their homes on foot before receiving the order to evacuate. Authorities have ordered everyone within a sixkilometre (3.7-mile) “danger zone” to leave. Marsita Sembiring, a vegetable farmer, said she fled Sukanalu village

— which is about four kilometres from the volcano — with her husband and four children on Sunday.

They spent the day at a shelter in the town of Kabanjahe, 20 kilometres from Sinabung, but returned to the village for the night to protect their home from looters.

“We were in the shelter yesterday but came back late in the afternoon to our village because we were afraid that somebody would steal our belongings,” she said.

“It also rained last night and we were sure that the volcano would become calmer, so we decided to stay overnight in our house.”

But fresh eruptions Monday convinced her to take her family to safety again, she said.

“This morning it erupted again. We panicked as the smoke was rising very high. I’m so worried that the smoke is poisonous,” the 41-year-old woman said.

Aircraft were ordered to avoid the area and travellers to North Sumatra province were warned of possible delays, transport ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said.

The invitation was conveyed by Biak Numfor District Head Yusuf Melianus to visiting Singaporean ambassador to Indonesia, Ashok Kumar Mirpuri, at a bilateral meeting here on Monday.

Malaysia deports hundreds of Indonesian workers Antara

SAMARINDA - Malaysia has deported at least 144 Indonesian migrant workers amid the two countries’ soured relationship in the aftermath of the 13 August incident.

Chief of Nunukan district’s port security Adjunct Commissioner Benny Catur Waluyo said here over the weekend that the deported migrant workers had arrived in the East Kalimantan port of Tunon Taka on August 26.

Among the deportees were 26 women and four children, he said adding that the deportation had nothing to do with the two countries’ strained relationship.

“They were deported because they had no legal working documents and passports. This is only a routine deportation,” he said.

Indonesia and Malaysia’s bilateral ties are currently in a difficult situation after a Malaysian police boat trespassed on Indonesian waters on August 13.

The Malaysian police had even arrested and kidnapped three Indonesian officers who were escorting some fishing boats belonging to

seven Malaysian fishermen who were caught red handed while poaching in Tanjung Berakit waters, Riau Islands Province.

Malaysia is one of the main destinations of Indonesian job seekers.

In the neighboring country, more than a million Indonesians are working in such sectors as construction projects and plantations.

The Indonesian workers in Malaysia are not always treated humanely. Instead, some have reportedly been treated badly, not paid, and even become victims of human trafficking.

The Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI) - East Java chapter, reported recently 18,641 Indonesians had become victims of human trafficking last year.

“Almost every day, our migrant workers have become victim of human traffickers due to the East Java provincial government’s weak monitoring,” SBMI-East Java chapter’s Chairman Mohammad Cholily said.

East Java was noted as the biggest sender of migrant workers to other countries, including Malaysia.

More than 18 thousands of those

workers became victim of human traffickers as a result of the workers’ poor knowledge about overseas job placement procedures.

The victims of this human trafficking ring were usually equipped with fake documents so that the SBMI activists got difficulties in handling their cases, he said.

In July, a human trafficking case with five Balinese students as the victims had been disclosed to the public. Before their return to Bali on Monday, the girls were forced to work at an electric company in the Malaysian city of Penang since their arrival in April with low wages.

According to the Indonesian Embassy’s Labor Attache Agus Trianto, the students were indeed victims of human trafficking activities. They arrived in Malaysia last April under a working contract between their school and a local employment recruiting official, named Samuel. They were promised internship at five-star hotels.

Instead of being placed at the promised five-star hotels, they were brought to Penang from Kuala Lumpur to be employed at an electronic factory there, he said.

DENPASAR - Kuta area in Bali will be developed along with the development of tourism in the island. The 1.5 kilometers of Legian road will be developed similar to the roads in Frankfurt Square, Germany.

I Wayan Puspanegara, the member of Badung House of Representative, said “the road will be arranged starting from the crossroad of Melasti and Legian to the south until the Bemo Corners.”

The arrangements will include drainage improvement on the sides of the road, and the installment of underground utility pipe for phone lines, fiber optic, and electrical lines.

“With the new development, there is great hope that the area will become a comfortable place for pedestrian, especially for tourists,” he added.

The government uses the road on Frankfurt Square as a model. The road will use the best road material which is the combination of granite and natural stones, and also will added with beautiful road lamps and

garden benches.

Puspanegara also said that the road on ground zero or the bomb explosion site will also replace with the new one.

In order to avoid traffic jam, the project will be done after the Denpasar Sewerage Development Project (DSDP) program finish. “We don’t want to destroy the beautiful face of Kuta,” he said.

Previously, Balinese people encountered depression, among others, caused by differences of view and interpretation of the faith diversity. King of Bali Udayana W a r m a d e w a - S r i Gunapriyadarmapattni designated Mpu Kuturan to re-organize the Balinese socio-religious life. From this point, the Balinese was unified and its tranquility was re-organized into an autonomous village administrative system known as Desa Pakraman based on three-pillared harmonic concept, namely Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (God), humans and the earth (environment).

It was emphasized that relationship of the three should be harmonious. Harmony would happen if men as perpetrators and executors

could maintain the six sources of welfare called sad kertih. They comprised atma kertih (soul), wana kertih (forest), danu kertih (lake), segara kertih (sea), jagat kertih (universe) and jana kertih (human). It was the implementation of the three causes of harmony, namely the Tri Hita Karana concept. The question, could we still have maintained the sad kertih rigidly and correctly based on clear concepts (silayukti)?

Concept of Mpu Kuturan remained relevant to the present time in Bali and even possibly throughout the ages.

Nowadays, Bali ha been known throughout the world. Among others, it is caused by good architecture, social organization and environment based on the concept of Tri Hita Karana.

The concept on Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in the Hindu teaching, according the book of restoration committee, has single existence.

Vedic scripture calls it Brahman or Tat or Sat standing for the essence. Bali continues eliminating stray dog amid protest Antara

DENPASAR - The Bali provincial administration kept on killing stray dog despite international protests, spokesman for the administration I Ketut Teneng said Teneng added that the decision to maintain the stray dog elimination policy was aimed at preventing the spread of rabies spread by these dogs. Apart from killing the dogs, he argued, the Bali authorities had also vaccinated pet dogs.

Up till now some 977,461 stray dogs had been killed, and 348,069 dogs vaccinated.

Cases of dog bite in Bali since the rabies outbreak had reached 25,531 in 2008. The number of dog bite cases had raised demand for anti-rabies vaccines. Up till now, Bali province had spent 23,031 vials of the vaccines, and still has 15,582 more available ready for use.

Teneng said the Bali administration’s action in dealing with stray dogs may eliminate rabies there in 2012.

The Bali provincial administration has allocated Rp16.07 billion from its own budget for rabies eradication this year.

The funds are channeled through the regional animal husbandry and animal health offices, and other activities. Of the total of Rp16.07 billion, Rp3.38 billion would be used for operational activities, health care and prevention of infectious diseases.

Despite mass dog culls aimed at preventing rabies outbreaks threatening the tourist industry in Bali, the incidence of canine disease on the resort island has continuously increased.

Since August 2009, the number of districts affected by the potentially fatal disease had more than tripled after first appearing in two districts in November last year.

Exploring the past green delight

A simple thesaurus with huge benefits People reading Balinese manuscripts known as lontar occasionally find slight difficulties especially in the matter of lexicons. This happens because the manuscripts often use synonyms and they do not belong to common words. Nevertheless, such difficulty may not become a hindrance to learn the ancient heritages being rich in knowledge.

There is always a solution to resolve the problem. As other languages, Balinese language also has thesaurus known as Dasa Nama. One of the books carrying about it is a simple 67page book written by I Made Gambar who deeply involves in Balinese ancient manuscripts. Based on lexicons obtained from several lontars he successfully classified the field into six categories such as name of birds, name of trees, things or animals, homograph, Old Javanese and ingredients of ritual.

As a matter of fact, the book resembles to a thesaurus, though not arranged alphabetically. It is a BalineseBalinese word equivalence that does not give the meaning with explanation.

Uniquely, it tends to provide equivalent meaning belonging to uncommon vocabularies usually found in vernacular language.

For readers who would like to learn more about Balinese herbal, this thesaurus will be very helpful. In addition, it can enrich the Balinese vocabulary. For instance, in Balinese herbal manuscript, there is a word lenge (red rice). It is not common to daily Balinese language that usually uses baas barak. Secondly, equivalences of hibiscus (pucuk—common word) are wirakusuma, landa para, sumara, jakusuma, tundapala, raktajuma, warangbang, waribang, wangewarih

and jaya kesuma.

Other than thesaurus, it also carries homograph. For example, the word antara can have English equivalence to the words (1) leak, (2) good, (3) smart, (4) sky, (5) soul, and (6) intermediate. The word antara is often found used as word formation in making Balinese individual names like Budiantara and Sujaantara.

Hopefully, this book could help young generation or whoever wishing to learn more about Balinese ancient manuscripts. They actually cover many aspects of life ranging from herbal healing (Taru Pramana, Rukmini Tattwa etc.), architecture (Asta Kosala Kosali), agriculture (Shri Tattwa/Darmaning Pemaculan), astrology (Wariga

Dewasa), afterlife (Atma Prasangsa), medical code of ethic (Usada Kalimosada) and many more.

As the treasure of indigenous wisdom, the lontar manuscripts have provided rich inspirations to spa treatment especially in terms of boreh ingredients, Balinese massage as well as elegant design to villa and hotel properties. By learning more ancient manuscripts, it will be obtained more and more inspirations and if combined with modern science and technique will engender unique and elegant products. Last but not least, let’s preserve and learn them.

For instance, candung or bijou taro is a species of taro ordinarily growing wet land and uncultivated. Size of its leaf is small and has purple stalk. Its leaf can be made into vegetable serving added with peanut and winged bean (kecipir). This one is a past treasure of Balinese food rarely known by current generation.

Ingredients: 1 handful candung leaf, 100gr peanut and 3 pieces of winged bean (cut short crosswise) Spices: 6 cloves shallot, 3 cloves garlic, 1 small chili, 2 candlenut, 1 slice ginger, 1 slice turmeric, 1 slice aromatic ginger, 1 stalk lemongrass (finely sliced), Others: 1 tsp water of tamarind paste, 1 tsp salt and 2 tbsp grated coconut, 1000ml water Method: · Cleanse the candung leaf and drain well. · All spices are ground finely. Then, boil the water and put the whole candung leaf into the water along with peanut and winged bean. Wait until they are half- done. · Add the ground spices, salt and water of tamarind paste and stir it constantly. Gitgit Waterfall is a beautiful tourist destination in north part of Bali.

Gitgit waterfall is located in the plateau area with the height about 35 meters and it is surrounded by tropical tree and emits the constantly natural water debit during the year. BUSINESS Obama wants to ‘keep pushing’ on economy Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama said Sunday he wants to “keep on pushing” the economy to keep a fragile recovery on track but also pay more attention to getting debt and deficits under control.

In an interview with NBC News, Obama said the sluggish economy combined with heavy debt will force “some very tough decisions” for his administration.

“We’re going to be have to do two things at once. We’ve got to keep on pushing to grow the economy. But we’ve also on the medium term and the long term have to get control of our deficit,” Obama said.

“And it would be ideal where we didn’t have to worry about one and could just focus on the other. But, you know, this generation, it’s fallen

on our shoulders to make some very tough decisions.”

His comments came days after official figures showed US economic growth slowed to a pace of 1.6 percent in the second quarter, suggesting the recovery was sputtering.

“We anticipated that the recovery was slowing,” Obama said.

“The economy is still growing, but it’s not growing as fast as it needs to. I’ve got things right now in — before Congress that we should move immediately... We should be passing legislation that helps small businesses get credit that eliminates capital gains taxes so that they have more incentive to invest right now.”

The president said there are “a whole host of measures we could take, no single element of which is a magic bullet but cumulatively can start continuing to build momentum for the recovery.”

Singapore ramps up measures to cool property market Agence France-Presse

SINGAPORE - Singapore on Monday announced fresh anti-speculation measures to cool its private property market as the city-state’s doubledigit economic growth keeps upward pressure on demand.

Owners who sell houses and apartments less than three years after buying them will have to pay a duty of three percent of the resale value — a measure previously applicable to transactions within one year of the purchase.

For buyers with at least one outstanding loan, the minimum cash down payment was raised from five to 10 percent of valuation, while the maximum amount a bank can lend was capped at 70 percent, down from 80 percent.

The balance of the purchase price can be taken from pension savings.

The measures, which take immediate effect, are designed to discourage “flipping” — buying properties on easy credit with low cash down payments, and then reselling them quickly for profit.

They were announced as a traditional lull in the property market in August was about to come to an end.

“The government’s objective is to ensure a stable and sustainable property market where prices move in line with economic fundamentals,” said a joint statement from the central bank and ministries of finance and national development.

Properties in land-scarce Singapore are now among the most expensive in Asia, boosted in large part by the building of two massive casino complexes

that opened this year.

A typical three-bedroom suburban apartment of around 100 square metres (1,076 square feet) that will be ready for occupancy in only two or three years now costs at least a million US dollars.

Latest available government data showed property prices rose 5.3 percent quarter-on-quarter in the AprilJune period, albeit slower than the 5.6 percent jump in the March quarter.

Even during the recession last year, private property prices rose 1.8 percent despite government measures to dampen the market.

Analysts expect the property market to stay strong in light of the economy’s projected expansion of 13-15 percent for 2010, which would make Singapore the world’s fastest growing major economy this year.

The credit environment, with lending rates on home loans below one percent in some cases, is another factor boosting buyer sentiment.

The government said the latest announcement was necessary to avert a potential property meltdown should the global economic recovery stall, which would have an impact on Singapore’s trade-dependent economy.

If growth falters and the market corrects, “Property buyers could face capital losses, with implications on their own finances and the economy as a whole,” the government said.

Chua Yang Liang, head of regional research with Jones Lang LaSalle, expects property prices to rise two to three percent on a quarterly basis with the introduction of the new measures.

Japan announces 920 billion yen stimulus package Agence France-Presse

TOKYO - Japan on Monday announced plans for a stimulus package worth around 920 billion yen (11 billion dollars) as it looks to safeguard a fragile recovery and curb the impact of a strong yen.

The package will be financed by reserve funds, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said, but he added that the government would consider compiling an additional budget if necessary.

“We decided on the basic plan (of the stimulus) comprising employment, investment, education” and regulatory reform, Kan said.

The package would be given final approval on September 10, he said, before being implemented later that month.

The announcement followed the Bank of Japan’s move on Monday to extend a multi-billion-dollar loan programme in a bid to curb the strength of the yen, but the currency moved higher, with markets unimpressed.

The decision came after an emergency meeting called in response to strong pressure from officials to curb the yen’s rise and support an economy mired in deflation, after the unit hit a 15-year high against the dollar last week.

Fears for the health of the global economy have increased in recent weeks, and US Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke on Friday vowed to act if “unexpected developments” further threaten the shaky US recovery.

BoJ governor Masaaki Shirakawa returned to Tokyo on Sunday after cutting short a trip to the United States by

one day for the hastily convened gathering.

In its second loan expansion since March, the bank said it would offer 10 trillion yen (118 billion dollars) in sixmonth low interest loans in addition to 20 trillion yen from December’s threemonth loan scheme.

Domestic financial institutions will therefore be able to borrow a total of 30 trillion yen from the central bank for maximum of six months against pooled collateral, at the rate of 0.1 percent.

The move would help lower interest rates in the market place with a view to easing the yen’s strength, said the bank, which left its key rate unchanged at 0.1 percent.

With the government due to outline a new stimulus package on Tuesday, “the bank believes that the monetary easing measure, together with the government’s efforts, will be effective in further ensuring Japan’s economic recovery.”

However, markets took a dim view of the widely expected steps, with the yen strengthening to below 85 against the dollar and the Nikkei index paring back earlier three percent gains to close up 1.76 percent.

The economic impact of the decision will be “close to zero,” Macquarie Bank economist Richard Jerram told

Dow Jones Newswires. “It’s largely a charade.”

“Investors had completely factored in the announced steps”, said RuiXue Xu, rates strategist at RBS Securities Japan.

Shirakawa said that Monday’s emergency meeting was held because “weak US economic indicators have continued, which led to the yen’s strength and falls in share prices.”

However, analysts say the BoJ, which has kept rates at 0.1 percent since the height of the financial crisis, has little room for manoeuvre.

Japan has long relied on its export sector for economic growth, but the strong yen poses a threat to the overseas profits.

The country remains under pressure to safeguard its fragile recovery, with weak gross domestic product growth of an annualised 0.4 percent in the second quarter pointing to a slowdown.

And dreary consumer price data Friday cast a darker shadow over the government’s goal of ending deflation in the fiscal year starting April 2011.

Core consumer prices eased 1.1 percent in July, the 17th consecutive monthly fall.

Persistent deflation prompts consumers to defer purchases in the hope of further price falls and deters corporate capital spending.

‘Last Exorcism’ comes first at North American box office Agence France Presse

LOS ANGELES - New release “The Last Exorcism,” a gruesome documentary-style horror movie, beat out competitors for the North American box office top spot this weekend, preliminary figures showed Sunday. The movie, directed by Daniel Stamm and coproduced by Eli Roth, a director known for his bloody thrillers, follows a disillusioned minister supposedly filming his last exorcism for a documentary.

The new release took 21.3 million dollars in its first weekend in US and Canadian theaters, according to preliminary figures from Exhibor Relations, beating out another newcomer “Takers.”

The crime action, starring Hayden Christensen, singers Chris Brown and T.I., and Idris Elba, follows the exploits of a group of professional thieves who take on one last job. It took 21 million dollars in box office receipts over the weekend, pushing last week’s number one move, old school action flick “The Expendables” to the number three spot.

“Expendables,” Sylvester Stallone’s film about a group of weathered mercenaries out to topple a South American dictator, earned 9.5 million dollars in its third week in theaters.

Down one spot to number four was “Eat, Pray, Love,” Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel about a divorcee’s

jaunt to Italy, Indonesia and India, starring Julia Roberts. It earned seven million dollars in its third week of release.

Staying put at number five was “The Other Guys,” the latest Will Ferrell slapstick comedy, about two mismatched police officers paired on a high-profile crime investigation. It earned an estimated 6.6 million dollars.

Down four places to number six was “Vampires Suck,” a send-up of the “Twilight” series of heart throbmeets-horror films, which took 5.3 million dollars after debuting last week at the number two spot. After spending last week at ninth place, blockbuster “Inception” jumped back up two places to number seven, showing the movie’s staying power with audiences.

The mindbending flick, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as an expert infiltrator of people’s dreams, took 5.1 million dollars over the weekend to bring its seven week earnings to 270.7 million dollars.

“Nanny McPhee Returns,” the sequel to a popular kid’s film starring British actress Emma Thompson in the title role, stayed put at number eight, earning 4.7 million dollars, while Jennifer Aniston’s latest romantic comedy “The Switch” slipped two spots to number nine with earnings of 4.65 million dollars.

ATAMI, Japan - Long a favourite of lovers and honeymooners, a Japanese beach town with fading sparkle has found a new tourism niche in the wired age by drawing young men and their virtual girlfriends. One recent sweltering summer’s day, a tour bus from Tokyo pulled up at a sun-kissed beach at Atami, a Pacific coast resort southwest of the metropolis, and disgorged more than a dozen excited, iPhone-clutching young men.

The determined youngsters, paying scant attention to the bikini-clad girls frolicking on the sand, instead headed straight for a bronze statue that depicts Kanichi and Omiya, a couple from an old love story set in Atami.

The focus of the men’s attention — and of their smartphone cameras — was a tiny black and white square, a two-dimensional barcode that, thanks to “augmented reality” (AR) software, brought to life the object of their desire.

“Look, it’s like I’m in a snapshot with her,” said Shu Watanabe, 23, as he showed off his iPhone display, featuring himself next to the image of a doe-eyed cartoon character named Rinko, a smiling high school girl.

Rinko may only be digital, but try telling that to Watanabe or the legions of other fans of “Love Plus”, a dating sim or simulation game that is played on handheld Nintendo DS consoles and also boasts AR applications for iPhones. Its creators, Konami Digital Entertainment, have long thrilled young men obsessed

with high-tech, manga and anime, known as “otaku”, by letting them chase virtual girls in the alternative universe of their digital dreams.

The hit videogame made headlines when a 27-year-old Japanese man known only as “Sal 9000” staged a tuxedo wedding late last year, which was watched by thousands online, with his favourite cartoon girl, Nene Anegasaki.

But in the latest edition, game makers have gone a step further and teamed up with the very real city of Atami, an onsen or hot spring town 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of the Japanese capital. They have selected 13 romantic locations which can be overlaid with images of Rinko or her teenage friends Manaka and Nene, who have all swapped their usual sailor-style school uniforms for casual summer wear.

Local souvenir shops in the resort town have caught on and capitalised on the love-struck new clientele, selling Love Plus-themed souvenirs, from good-luck charms to steamed buns and fish sausages.

The local Ohnoya hotel even offers traditional rooms to the unusual couples, which feature two sets of futon beds and another barcode panel that allows the men to visualise their girlfriends in a flattering summer kimono. Love Plus, released only on the Japanese market, has become the country’s most popular dating game since its release last September, selling nearly 430,000 copies, according to research firm Enterbrain.

The secret is that the dating game goes a step beyond the genre’s usual boy-meets-girl script and asks players to build long-term relationships.

“In conventional love games, you went up stages to make a virtual girl fall in love with you, so that she would accept you as a boyfriend or express her love for you,” said Konami spokesman Kunio Ishihara.

“But players of Love Plus are in a scenario where they are a high school boy who is already dating one of the virtual girls. The goal is to see how good you can be to her and to build a relationship.”

In Venice, traditional materials unite architectural worlds Agence France Presse

VENICE, Italy- Rwanda, a first-time presence at the Venice architectural Biennale, is shining the spotlight on the use of traditional techniques and materials in design and architecture. The strategy is seen as an essential way to safeguard traditional culture and national identity in the nation traumatized by the 1994 genocide.

Rwanda’s modest exhibition at the Biennale opening Sunday shows how centuries-old weaving techniques and natural fibers can be used to create necklaces or shoes, how ash and cow dung can decorate modern walls and how alternatives to paper can be used in handmade books.

“Today, before we throw away vegetable fibers we have to think again,” Josephie Malonza of the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology told a seminar Saturday at Rwanda’s pavilion.

The featured speaker at the seminar, prominent Burkina Faso architects Francis Kere, accused the North of “putting us under pressure by saying that what we have is primitive.”

Africans have alternatives to air-conditioning, and mud is a material that is perfectly adapted to the African situation, he said.

“There’s no insurance (against damage or destruction). People

just band together and in seven days they will rebuild” a mud structure ruined by rain, Kere said.

While Rwanda wants to preserve natural building techniques, Czech architect Martin Rajnis wants to import them from poor countries, picking up ideas from travels to the “third and even the fourth world, among the native people untouched by civilization.”

Rajnis has developed a vision dubbed Natural Architecture based on the natural world of indigenous peoples, plants and animals. He masterminded the Czech and Slovak pavilion, which draws the visitor in under a canopy of randomly arranged pine planks.

Inside is an installation entirely in unfinished wood taking the visitor along walkways and past multilayered creations, some twisting into spirals, others formed into cones and domes inspired by natural forms.

Claiming that “architecture is undergoing a crisis,” Rajnis says modern buildings “no longer satisfy people. It is necessary to start to create differently: instead of design and aesthetics to take inspiration from the deeper laws of nature.” Light years away from natural building materials is the acrylic meshwork fitted with microprocessors and sensors that the Biennale visitor will find at Canada’s pavilion.

ROME - It was a mixed bag on the opening weekend of the Serie A season for two of Italy’s giants as Juventus were shocked by Bari while AC Milan crushed Lecce 4-0. Coming into this season on the back of their worst ever campaign, Juventus have spent big in their bid to get back to the top of Serie A. Last season’s seventh-placed finish and missing out on the Champions League sent fear through Juve’s bosses, who responded by opening the chequebook. Nine new players, amongst them five Italy internationals, were testament to new coach Luigi Delneri’s intent and yet the team that was defeated 1-0 at Bari appeared to have made no progress since last season.

Juve began with seven Italy internationals in their starting line-up but their modest opponents dominated from the off.

Abdelkader Ghezzal had a oneon-one with Juve goalkeeper Marco Stoari as Juve’s static, flat defence failed to cope with the run from deep.

Stoari saved but he could do nothing about Massimo Donati’s spectacular curler two minutes from the break. Bari came the closer to scoring after the restart with Donati again hitting an effort from distance

that this time went just the wrong side of the upright.

MADRID - Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid career began on a low note with a disappointing 0-0 draw at Real Mallorca that did little to suggest his team can dethrone current champions Barcelona. Portuguese coach Mourinho and his proven track record have Madrid fans excited about winning silverware after a two-year barren spell but his team failed to convince, lacking cohesion and creativity.

Mourinho gave five players their Real debuts in his first match at the helm but they could not break down a resolute Mallorca side managed by Real old boy Michael Laudrup.

NEW YORK - Defending women’s champion Kim Clijsters, 16-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer and Venus Williams will provide the first-day fireworks when the US Open begins on Monday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Belgian second seed Clijsters, whose past two US Open appearances in 2005 and last year have resulted in her only Grand Slam crowns, will open against Hungary’s 104th-ranked Greta Arn. Federer begins his quest for a seventh consecutive US Open final and his sixth title in seven years on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts against Argentina’s 94th-rated Brian Dabul.

The 29-year-old Swiss superstar lost to another Argentine foe, Juan Martin Del Potro, in last year’s US Open final, but Del Potro will not be defending his crown due to a wrist injury.

Reigning Australian Open champion Federer has shrugged off critics who say he is past his prime since his run of 23 Grand Slam semi-finals in a row was stopped at the French Open quarter-finals by Robin Soderling, a fifth-seeded Swede who could play Federer in the US Open quarter-finals.

“At times I took it as a compliment,” Federer said. “I was No. 2 in the world and winning one or two Slams a year and I was on the downslide. You can’t really take

it too seriously to be quite honest.

In a semi-final against Clijsters, Serena Williams was called for a foot fault that sparked her to threateningly approach Tsurubuchi, who went to the umpire to report a code violation that saw Williams lose on a penalty point.

IZMIR – Battling Australia, who squeezed past Jordan in their world basketball championship opener, gave world number one Argentina a mighty fright on Sunday before being edged out 74-72.

After an enthralling first three quarters, the two sides went point for point in the final period.

Australia were ahead with 6min 30sec remaining but when Louis Scola (31 points) sunk two free throws with 8.8sec remaining it looked over for the Aussies. But Joseph Ingles (22 points) was on hand to knock in a missed three-pointer

In the same Group A, Germany created the upset of day when they held off Serbia in overtime. Pedrosa wins Indy MotoGP, Lorenzo in third Agence France Presse

INDIANAPOLIS - Dani Pedrosa seized the lead on the seventh lap and then fended off a fierce challenge to post his third MotoGP win of the season Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Spain’s Pedrosa covered the 28-lap, 118.048km circuit on his Honda in 47 minutes, 31.615 seconds while American Ben Spies, who began the race on the pole, finished second in 47:35.190.

Pedrosa said he was pleased with his ride and the way he handled the hot temperatures on Sunday. “It was very, very warm out there. You know, you didn’t cool down in the 45 minutes you’re out there,” said Pedrosa.

“The track was slippery, the bike always starts to be very greasy. So many crashes because of the bumps and the track temperature.

“It was very important to be focused in every corner and make no mistake with the bumps, especially at the end when the tires are more damaged.”

Jorge Lorenzo of Spain, who won the race here last year, had his worst finish of the year when he placed third. Lorenzo, well on his way to a world championship, finished over 12 seconds behind the winner in a bid for his eighth victory of the year.

Tragedy struck during the first race of the day at the Indianapolis Speedway when 13-year-old racer Peter Lenz died after crashing and

being run over by another young competitor.

Lorenzo saw Pedrosa gain some ground in the series. With six races remaining, Lorenzo has accumulated 251 points. Pedrosa is second at 183 and Italian Andrea Dovizioso is third with 126. Spies, starting on the pole for the first time in his rookie season, held the lead for six laps.

Pedrosa completed an inside pass on the front straightaway of lap seven and slowly pulled away from the American. His biggest advantage was 5.622 seconds after the 19th lap.

“We can’t complain,” said Spies.

“We had a good start and led some laps. Didn’t set the world on fire, but we had a good pace. It just wasn’t fast enough.” Sunny skies and a temperature of 92 degrees Fahrenheit greeted the riders at the start of the race. On the opening lap, Dovizioso rode his Honda from fourth to second place with Nicky Hayden dropping to third.

Pedrosa passed Hayden on the

next lap. Marco Melandri of Italy crashed on the third lap when Lorenzo, who had started second, slipped to fourth.

Pedrosa passed Dovizioso for second in turn one of the fourth lap and from then on he and Spies battled for the lead.

The Spaniard trailed Spies by .888 seconds after four laps, cut the difference on each of the next two laps before moving ahead. His lead after seven laps was .015 and steadily grew on 10 consecutive laps. He had the fastest lap of the race on lap at one minute, 40.896 seconds.

“I must not be disappointed, but I’m not happy with my ride,” said Lorenzo, who had finished first or second in every race this year. “I didn’t feel so good with my physical condition. The third lap I was tired and I was not able to make the same pace as in practice.” Lorenzo also discussed the tough track conditions.

The McLaren driver won for the third time in 2010, moving himself into a four-point championship lead over Mark Webber, who finished second, after a dominant drive in changeable weather conditions.

“I am so happy, so grateful to be in this position,” said Hamilton. “If you have things like that in a race like that it can be a lottery. “To come out on top, even facing a difficult situation - and one I was blessed to get away with, I am so happy, so ecstatic.”

Hamilton said that he had feared the worst when he slid off the track at Rivage on slick tyres on lap 35, just after a second rain shower of the race had begun.

Fortunately for him, he kept his car moving, just skimming the tyre wall on the edge of the gravel trap without doing his McLaren any damage. “The conditions were really tricky when it started to rain,” he added. “I was losing temperature in the tyres and not knowing how hard to push.

I braked late and locked a wheel and went wide in Turn 8.

“I made it all the way out to the wall and just clipped it with the edge of my wing. I was fortunate to get away with that, it was so slippery out there - there was nothing you could do, just tip-toe around.

“Overall the team did a remarkable job this weekend, constantly pushing. In some places we were not as fast as these guys [Webber and Robert Kubica], but it’s great that when we are close we can maximise it. I am so happy to be up here.”

Hamilton had hoped to finish the race behind the safety car, so as to preserve his lead during the latter stages. He said that the final few laps required a huge amount of concentration.

“I was hoping the safety car would stay out longer.

Fortunately though, it stopped raining and the track got better. “In the end I was nursing car home, bringing it home in one piece, and just concentrating on keeping small gap between myself and Mark. It’s good.”
