Tourism site forgetting penjor Denpasar –

The Galungan day which falls on Wednesday, October 14th 2009, was celebrated solemnly by the Hindus. Since early in the morning, the Hindus had come to the temples and pray. The road filled with “penjor” which is the symbol of gratitude toward God because He has given wealth to the people.

The solemn situation was not fully felt in Bali. There was only few penjor in several areas in Bali. In tourism area in Bali, there was not even a single penjor and a banner saying “Happy Galungan Day”. A different situation can be seen during other important days.

Similar to tourism area in Badung such as Nusa Dua and Kuta, in other areas such as Ubud, Sanur, and other which is notably promote Balinese culture for tourism, there was not many penjor on the street. Continued on page 6

Buleleng the Hindus eat in cemetery, Gianyar “Ngejot Tumpeng” Buleleng –

The Galungan day in Buleleng was different compared to other area in Bali. In addition to pray in the temples, the Hindus in Buleleng also visited the local cemeteries. The Hindus pray for their relatives that already passed away and not yet being cremated or “Ngaben”. The most interesting part is after praying, they eat in the area where their families was buried. Approximately at 6 am local

time, two major cemeteries in Singaraja, Setra Buleleng and Banyuasri, was already crowded with the Hindus. Putu Edi for Banjar Jawa said that the tradition of praying in the cemetery was not only being conducted during Galungan, but also on Kuningan and Pagerwesi. “All of the family members usually gathered on the cemetery and talk to each other,” he added.
