Michael Schumacher is to borrow an F2007 from Ferrari’s historic Clienti department once again so he can conduct a two-day test at Mugello from tomorrow ahead of his F1 comeback. With Ferrari’s request for a testing exemption to allow Schumacher to drive an F60 having been rejected by Williams, Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso, Schumacher has taken matters into his own hands and decided to get some more F1 experience himself. Having already conducted one day in the F2007, loaned by the F1 Clienti historic cars division, last month, Schumacher has requested the loan of the car once again so he can conduct two more days of running, on the GP2-spec tyres that the historic cars normally run on. His test will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Seven-time Formula One world champion driver Michael Schumacher, right, approaches his cart at the South Garda Karting track in Lonato, Italy, Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009. Schumacher said Tuesday he is slimming down for his Formula One comeback and the only problem is a little neck pain. Schumacher’s first race is expected to be the European Grand Prix in Valencia on Aug. 23. The 40-year-old is returning to his Ferrari team while Felipe Massa recovers from a recent crash.

AUTOSPORT understands that Schumacher is paying for the test himself, which will be overseen by members of the Clienti department and not involve Ferrari F1 team members. Since confirming he will be making an F1 return, Schumacher has been pushing himself hard to get back to race fitness. He spent time testing karts at Lonato and has been working on his strength and endurance. Schumacher’s progress is being overseen by doctors, who are keeping a close eye on his condition and have been conducting a series of medical tests to ensure he is ready for an F1 return in Valencia.

Wurz, de la Rosa in frame for US F1 seat Pedro de la Rosa and Alexander Wurz have emerged as the leading contenders to race alongside an American rookie at the new Team US F1 next year, AUTOSPORT has learned. Although the Americanbased outfit had considered running two American drivers for its debut campaign in 2010, the team believes it will be better placed slotting in an experienced racer to help its development phase. It is understood that the team is already in talks with both de la Rosa and Wurz, whose vast experience of testing and racing would be of huge

use to US F1. De la Rosa’s contract as a McLaren test driver runs out at the end of this year, and the Spaniard is also in talks with Campos Grand Prix about a race seat there. Wurz will also be free of his test deal with Brawn GP at the end of this year and, on the back of efforts to get his Team Superfund on the grid in 2010, he thinks a tie up with US F1 could make sense off the track as well as on it. US F1 is expected to announce imminently that YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley is to become an investor in the team.

Speaking about a US F1 deal, Wurz said: “Peter Windsor [US F1 sporting director] talked to me about the possibility of driving for them as they have limited time for testing and would need an experienced driver. “I know their first priority is US drivers but if they really want me I would be interested in this task to build a new franchise from scratch and help them with my input.” US F1 is considering its options in terms of an American driver, with Formula Atlantic driver Jonathan Summerton one of the leading contenders to be given an F1 chance.

NUSA DUA - The Asia Pacific region is on target to treat a million HIV-positive people with antiretroviral drugs within the next two years, a UN body said Monday. Around 565,000 people in the region are already receiving treatment, UNAIDS regional director Prasada Rao said, adding he was “confident” of getting the medicine to another halfa-million people by 2011. “We’re half-way through. There are still about 500,000 more who need to be covered by antiretroviral treatment (before we) reach the universal access

target,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the ninth International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) in Bali, Indonesia. An estimated five million Asians are living with HIV, many of them in Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines and Indonesia, according to a UN report released last year. Continued on page 6
