Raikkonen: Odd grid makes win possible Belgium -Kimi Raikkonen believes the unexpected grid for the Belgian Grand Prix could present him with the opportunity to take Ferrari’s first win of 2009.

Belgium - Mercedes-Benz is hoping to reveal its customer engine plans for 2010 at the Italian Grand Prix, amid mounting speculation that a deal to supply Red Bull Racing has now been agreed.

AUTOSPORT revealed in April that Red Bull Racing was chasing a supply of Mercedes-Benz engines for next year, once its current contract with Renault comes to an end later this season.

It is understood that Red Bull Racing’s recent engine problems have accelerated the moves towards Mercedes-Benz, with an announcement on the outcome of those negotiations expected imminently.

A Mercedes-Benz deal with Red Bull Racing would mean McLaren’s engine partner supplying four teams in total next year - as Brawn GP and Force India will also receive customer units.

Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug told AUTOSPORT that he could not reveal the details of any discussions that his car manufacturer was having, but said news would come at the Italian GP in a

rebuilding that we did for our own team two years ago. This is a big, big efficiency programme. It also helps refinancing, but you need to be absolutely very lean. I am not sure whether everyone could do that.”

Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner said earlier in the Belgian GP weekend that his team was close to making a final decision about its plans - and that recent engine problems would not be the only factor in what his team did.

“We’re obviously in a position where, as an independent team, we have a choice of engine,” he said.

“We’ve been very, very happy with the supply that we’ve had from Renault for the last three years.

“Any decision that will be made, will be made not on the outcome of a single weekend but based on what we believe offers us the best opportunity of performance and relationship for the future.

“I definitely will not mention any team names,” he explained. “These are confidential negotiations, and I hope by Monza we know everything - so that is a fortnight away. Everything should be finalised by then.

“We have talked to various teams, more than one team, and I would like some understanding that these are confidential discussions so I cannot talk about it any more.”

F1’s regulations stipulate that any manufacturer supplying more than two teams in F1 needs special dispensation from the FIA. Haug confirmed that his company had received such approval to supply four teams.

“We have that in writing, and I think the FIA is very interested in a manufacturer who helps in this situation,” he explained. “There are not so many who would jump in and volunteer and would want more than one customer team, but you have to have the logistics, you have to have the capacity and you need to build it up.

“We could not have done it two years ago, but all in all we build half the engines for four teams including

“For tomorrow’s race it is definitely looking different to normal, so I think it looks like a more open race situation than usual. So we will see what we can do.”

Accelerates the Shift of Land’s Function There is an identical line of thinking among the decision makers in Bali. They believe tourism is everything. By the advancement of tourism they could resolve every single problem, whether it is the poverty, unemployment or regional revenue. In short, everything could be resolved by tourism.

On that account, when investors would like to establish tourism facility at their region, they welcome it convivially and joyously. If farmers reject the intention, they will be persuaded and given the same hope: everything could be resolved by tourism.

Only a few people think that Bali should be developed harmoniously. In other words, tourism may reach its advancement, but other sectors like the agriculture should not be neglected, moreover forgotten. Similarly, the protected forest functioning as water reservoir, landslide protector and climatic harmonizer should also be given the same protection as the agriculture and lake. Because, those implementing the equilibrium system consider the tourism sector is unable to grow well if not supported by agricultural sector, preserved forest, secure environment and guaranteed security. On that account, the endeavor of a number of regency in Bali that has provided tax subsidy to agricultural sector locating on the green belt zone should be given appreciation.

However, a question then arises:”Do you think the agriculture existing beyond the green belt zone is unimportant?” It is uncertain because the fertile land could assure for the availability of adequate food. Therefore, it is expected that the shift of land’s function could not be undertaken to such fertile land like that intended for hotel, villa or other tourism-related buildings. Because, the development of villa or hotel at the agricultural area will accelerate the transfer of land’s function like that happened at Wangaya Betan Hamlet, Mangesta, Penebel, Tabanan. However, today it only takes 18 hectares of land, but there is a possibility the area will be followed by other supporting facilities such as arts shop, restaurant and other promising facilities. Economically, the existence of the project may be advantageous, aside from absorbing the labor force, it also enables to create new livelihood for the surrounding community and additional hotel & restaurant tax. However, this matter will have a bad im-

pact on the environment where the villa is established posing an agricultural zone that will accelerate the transfer of land’s function and threat the water availability. Stagnancy of villa development at Wangaya Betan is also worried to result in the same fate as other investment that only divided the land and neglected it. Regency Government of Tabanan has not given explanation to what extent the investor would be given time by the Regent. The Tabanan Regent, Adi Wiryatama, lately admitted to recall the investor in order he could re-affirm about the continuity of such development.

One of the resource persons said that there has been a communication between the regent and investor. However, it has not been known yet the attitude of regency government on the stagnancy of such villa development.

Such 18-hectare land released by investor to build a resort and center for healthcare at Wangaya Betan, Mengesta Village, Penebel remained unclear up to these days. It did not indicate any signs of development project though initial work ceremony has been undertaken. The investor denoting a consortium of 13 countries seems to find no obstacles as it has had principle permit from the Tabanan Regent. (upi)

SYDNEY - French double Olympic champion Julien Absalon will be vying for his fifth world title at this week’s UCI mountain bike world championships in Canberra.

Absalon, 29, who became the first rider to defend the men’s Olympic cross country title in Beijing last year, ranks as a giant of the sport as a four-time world champion, from 2004 to 2007.

He gets his chance to make it five in the elite cross country event in the Stromlo Forest Park circuit on the outskirts of Australia’s national capital.

Absalon kept the gold in French hands for a third straight Olympics when he led compatriot JeanChristophe Peraud and Swiss pair Nino Schurter and world champion Christoph Sauser home last year.

Sauser, who has 14 World Cup wins and claimed the World Cup champion title in 2004 and 2005, will be fighting hard to retain the world crown he won in Val di Sole, Italy, last year.

Spain’s Margarita Fullana is the reigning world champion in the women’s elite cross country and will be defending her title against

Olympic champion Sabine Spitz of Germany.

Denpasar — Having made investigation for one day, the team of Criminal Researcher of South Kuta Sector Police finally could reveal the case on the incineration of Yamaha Mio with police number DK 8180 DT. The motorbike that was previously reported to set fire was in fact intentionally burned.

BERLIN - Germany’s Social Democrats hope to wrest two states from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives in polls Sunday and slow her formidable momentum toward a second term in next month’s general election.

The Social Democrats, junior partners in Merkel’s fractious leftright government, are gunning for ruling majorities in two of three state elections and dreaming of turning the tide ahead of the September 27 national poll.

Some 6.2 million voters are called to cast ballots in the excommunist eastern states of Saxony and Thuringia and Saarland on the French border.

The polls come at the end of a tough week for Merkel, amid turmoil over the future of automaker Opel, sniping between her conservatives and their favoured coalition partners, the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), and a flap

over a dinner she held for Germany’s top banker.

Merkel’s Christian Union (CDU/CSU) is leading the Social Democrats (SPD) at the national level by an around 15-point margin.

But polls show the conservatives may lose power in Thuringia and Saarland while holding onto the state house in Saxony.

The Social Democrats say they are prepared to take over by entering into alliances with the far-left Die Linke, a relatively new political party comprised of disaffected SPD members and former East German communists.

“Red-red” coalitions are common in the east of the reunited country but have been taboo in the west, where many see Die Linke as too radical and tainted by its historical links with the party that built the Berlin Wall.

Saarland would be the first western state to see such a governing alliance.

COPENHAGEN - A Saudi lawyer has demanded a public apology from a number of Danish dailies that reprinted a controversial cartoon of Prophet Mohammed in February 2008, Danish media reported on Sunday.

The lawyer, identified as Faisal A.Z. Yamani from Jeddah, sent an email to the newspapers that republished the drawing first printed in 2005 and demanded that they print an apology by the end of September, Danish news agency Ritzau reported.

“It should be a clear, public and

unconditional apology for the offence and harm caused by their newspaper,” Yamani wrote, demanding that the statement appear in the first three pages of the newspaper and in four languages, Danish, French, English and Arabic.

The caricature features Prophet Mohammed’s head with a turban designed to look like a bomb with a lit fuse.

It was one of 12 cartoons first published in a Danish newspaper in 2005 and which sparked violent protests across the Muslim world in early 2006.

It was reprinted in mid-February 2008 by some 17 newspapers after

Danish police foiled an alleged plot to kill the cartoonist, again triggering angry reactions in numerous Muslim countries.

Yamani suggested in the email that Danish interests in the Middle East could suffer if an apology was not forthcoming.

Danish products have been boycotted in some Middle Eastern countries in recent years because of the dispute.

The Danish newspapers’ association, Danske Dagblades Forening, said it would consult the foreign and justice ministry next week, and contact Danish newspapers to see how many had received the email.

TOKYO - Japan’s politicians have been trying to drum up election fever this summer, but followers of a growing craze are more excited about strongmen who have been dead for centuries — samurai warriors.

A mania over feudal warlords has been sweeping Japan, capturing the imagination of many in a way that grey-suited lawmakers can only dream of as they brave the sweltering dog days ahead of an election on Sunday.

Japan’s medieval knights have become all the rage, battling it out in video games, on cinema screens and in manga comics as sexy sword-wielding hunks.

Sales of their biographies have surged, their family coats of arms have been snapped up as lucky charms, and their former castles are being besieged by legions of fans yearning for a brush with Japan’s long-gone martial noblemen.

Samurai figures now beckon from cellphone wallpapers, and the wives of famous warrior-lords have become the stars of high-rating historical TV dramas.

The general history magazine “Rekishi Kaido” (“History Road”) has run cover stories on samurai lords almost every month for the past year.

The history fad — worth 745 million dollars a year, according to Dai-ichi Life Research Institute economist Toshihiro Nagahama — has been driven by hit video games and the A-List casts of popular samurai television dramas.

But some social observers also say the trend reflects a deeper yearning for potent leaders in a country fatigued by recession and uninspired by a bland political system dominated by two centrist mainstream parties.

In testing times like these, “people tend to turn to strong symbolic figures on whom they can

project their ideals,” said Hideki Nakagawa, a Nihon University sociology professor and an expert on pop culture.

What started out as a trend among video game nerds erupted into a mainstream craze this year after young women latched onto it.

Japanese media quickly found a label for them — “rekijo,” or female history geeks.

In a society where market researchers recently identified a new male demographic as passive ‘herbivores’, “women seek ‘super carnivorous males’,” said Ichiya Nakamura, a media and pop culture researcher at Keio University.

“The warlords were different from the cold-eyed, dispassionate Japanese men of today,” he said.

“They stood out because of their strong personalities.”

In a store dedicated to samurai books and paraphernalia, a 17-yearold female fan agreed wholeheartedly, gushing that the “warlords sacrificed themselves for justice and to protect the people.” Now, she scoffed, “politics purely serves the interests of politicians.”

Currently hip warlords include Oda Nobunaga, the first leader to bring Japan under unified rule, and Date Masamune, dubbed the “OneEyed Dragon” after his solitary eye and known for his iconic helmet with a blade-like crescent.

“We are in an era that lacks politicians with strong resolve,” said Fumikazu Oyama, 39, browsing through a bookstore specialising in the Sengoku or Warring States Period, which lasted from the 15th to the 17th centuries. “They only procrastinate and delay solving problems.”

“Japan will surely worsen if this situation continues,” he added, leafing through samurai biographies in a section labelled “The Male Resolve.”

At the Tokyo bookstore Jidaiya sales of samurai biographies have jumped 10-fold over the past year, a spokeswoman said.

‘Operation Nakam’: true story behind Tarantino’s film Agence France Presse

VIENNA – Quentin Tarantino’s new film “Inglourious Basterds” about a Jewish militia that killed and scalped Nazis in World War II is not as far-fetched as it might sound.

In fact, there was a real-life squadron of Jewish soldiers who hunted down SS officers in Austria immediately after the war in an operation called “Nakam” (vengeance in Hebrew), according to one of the troop’s last survivors, 88year-old Chaim Miller.

“We operated in the south of Austria in the days just after the war ended,” the Vienna-born Israeli told AFP via telephone from a Kibbutz near Jerusalem.

“We were soldiers in the Jewish Brigade group of the British army stationed in Tarvisio, Italy, close to the Austrian border. Yugoslav partisans had given us lists of names of Nazi criminals and so we went in groups of three to secretly search them out,” Miller recalled.

when we later showed them our Stars of David. But by then, it was already too late for them,” he said.

“We took them to some woods on the Italian side, gave them a ‘hearing’ for half an hour and then explained to them they’d pay. They remained in the woods forever,” Miller said.

“I participated in a number of actions of this type and several other groups worked in the same way.”

Historians are divided about the exact number of executions carried out in the operation, which was coordinated by the future chief of staff of the Israeli army, Chaim Laskov, with estimates ranging from 100 to 300.

Born Alfred Mueller in 1921 in in a working-class neighbourhood in Vienna, Chaim Miller emigrated to Palestine in February 1939 after the Nazi annexation of Austria. His parents stayed in Vienna and were murdered in the Holocaust.

In Palestine, Mueller joined the secret Jewish defence army Haganah and the “German Platoon” which consisted of 40 German-speaking Jews with Aryan looks who would infiltrate and operate behind German lines should the Germans ever threaten to take Palestine.

“In preparation, we underwent the perfect German soldier’s desert training, with weapons, uniforms and even learned to sing the Wehrmacht songs,” Miller recalled.

Erwin Rommel’s defeat in August 1942 rendered the project obsolete.

But most of the soldiers of the “German Platoon”, which was eventually integrated into the Jewish Brigade of the 8th British army, took part in Operation Nakam in 1945.

“We were driven by a desire for revenge. We knew that the overwhelming majority of SS criminals would never be brought to justice,” Miller said.

Winfried Garscha, historian at Vienna’s DOeW or Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance, confirmed this: “At most, only around 10-15 percent of those guilty of Nazi crimes were sentenced at the end of the war, in Austria, Germany and in Italy,” he told AFP.

NEW YORK – Authorities will need to conduct toxicology tests, expected to take weeks, to determine what killed celebrity disc jockey DJ AM, a medical examiner’s office spokeswoman said Saturday.

An autopsy Saturday of the 36year-old was inconclusive, said the spokeswoman, Ellen Borakove.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that police found a crack pipe and prescription pills in the apartment where they discovered DJ AM’s body Friday evening. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, had openly discussed past addictions to crack cocaine, Ecstasy and other drugs. In October, MTV was to debut his reality show, “Gone Too Far,” in which he and concerned families staged interventions for drug abus-

ers. MTV hasn’t said whether Goldstein’s show will air.

In an interview with the AP last month, he said the show provided a “terrifying” reminder of his own addiction. “I have to constantly remind myself why I’m here and remember what it was like,” he said.

Goldstein rose to fame several years ago as a deejay known for his mashups — blends of at least two songs. He performed in clubs, on concert stages and at exclusive Hollywood parties. His personal life also garnered attention, as he dated actress-singer Mandy Moore and reality TV star Nicole Richie, the daughter of singer Lionel Richie.

Goldstein was critically hurt in a plane crash last September in Colum-

bia, S.C., that killed four people. He was flying in a Learjet after a performance with Travis Barker, a drummer for the pop-punk band Blink-182 and Goldstein’s partner in the duo TRVSDJ-AM. Barker and Goldstein were burned. Goldstein had to get skin graft surgery but resumed performing about a month later. He told the AP he felt blessed to have survived but was still shaken by the crash.

“I guess I get why they call it ‘post-trauma,’ because it was very tough. I have really bad days, and I have really OK days,” he said.

His body was found after a friend called police to say he was unable to get into the home in New York City’s trendy SoHo neighborhood.

Paramedics had to break down the door before they found him, shirtless and wearing sweatpants, in his bed around 5:20 p.m. on Friday, the law enforcement official said. There was no evidence of foul play.

EHDEN - The small town of Ehden in north Lebanon gained an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records on Saturday for producing the largest ever kebbe — a dish of minced meat and cracked wheat.

A representative of Guinness World Records was on hand to certify that the giant meal prepared in a

festive atmosphere by 25 women in the town square measured up before presenting the official paperwork.

To create the giant circular 20square-metre (215-square-foot) kebbe they had to mix 120 kilos of mince, 80 litres of olive oil, 80 kilos of cracked wheat, five kilos of salt and a mere kilo of pepper.

After the huge dish was cooked the certificate was officially handed over to Rima Franjieh, wife of MP Sleiman Franjieh.

Melting glaciers threaten ‘Nepal tsunami’

LUKLA - Over two decades, Funuru Sherpa has watched the lake above his native village of Dengboche in Nepal’s Himalayas grow, as the glacier that feeds it melts.

The 29-year-old, who runs a busy Internet cafe for tourists visiting the Everest region, remembers his grandfather telling him that 50 years ago the lake did not exist.

“Before, it was all ice,” he told AFP in the eastern Himalayan town of Lukla, in the shadow of Mount Everest.

“This is proof that the glaciers in the high Himalayas are melting. And that must be because the temperatures have gone up.”

Scientists say the Imja Glacier above Dengboche is retreating by about 70 metres (230 feet) a year, and the melting ice has formed a huge lake that could devastate villages downstream if it bursts.

The trend is not new. Nepal’s International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), which has studied the Himalayas for three decades, says many of the country’s glaciers have been retreating for centuries.

But ICIMOD glaciologist Samjwal Ratna Bajracharya said this was now happening at an alarming speed, with temperatures in the Himalayas rising at a much faster rate than the global average.

“Our studies of the past 30 years show that the temperatures (in the Himalayas) are rising up to eight times faster than the global average.

Melting is taking place higher and faster,” Bajracharya told AFP. “The melting of glaciers and formation of glacier lakes is a key indicator of the temperature rise. And lately, we have seen massive ice melt.”

cial lakes and experts say at least 20 are in danger of bursting.

At almost one square kilometre (0.38 square miles), the Imja lake is the country’s second biggest, estimated to hold 36 million cubic metres (47 million cubic yards) of water, and is considered the biggest flood threat.

It is a subject close to the heart of Nepalese mountaineer Apa Sherpa, who has climbed Everest a record 19 times.

In 1985 Apa Sherpa lost his house and farm when the Dig Tsho glacial lake burst, causing a giant wave to flow down the mountain.

Seven people were killed by the flood, which swept away bridges and houses and destroyed a new hydropower station. “For me, climate change is personal,” said the climber, who dedicated his latest Everest expedition to raising awareness of the impact of climate change on mountain communities.

HANOI - Government loudspeakers are spreading communist propaganda over the streets of Hanoi ahead of the 40th anniversary Wednesday of Ho Chi Minh’s death.

But few people seem to be listening.

“The grand sacrifices (of Ho Chi Minh), brilliant moral revolutionary, remain the sun lighting the way for the nation,” a government employee announces into his microphone.

Yet even the messenger doubts the effect of his words about Ho, the country’s founding president.

“I see very few people listening,” he says, unwilling to be named.

They may admire Ho but many of Vietnam’s young people — who make up more than half the population — say they have no time for government campaigns in his name.

“Following someone, you do that on your own, in your heart, not in response to a general movement,” said Tran Hong Linh, 19, a university student.

Construction worker Nguyen Thanh Lam, 20, said he heard a lot of talk on the radio about Ho, “but nothing came into my ears.”

Government campaigns for people to live and work according to Ho’s example are a “fiasco” that bring no benefit to the people, said a shop manager, who asked not to be identified.

“I think he is an admirable figure although now there are so many opposite opinions about his life and career,” said a woman, 28, who works for a foreign company and also would not be named.

She is among the 51 percent of Vietnam’s population who, official data say, are under the age of 30, meaning they were born after the war against the US ended in 1975 and have grown up in the country’s booming market economy.

European economic confidence improves: EU survey

BRUSSELS - European business and consumer confidence firmed in August for a fifth month running, an EU survey showed Friday, adding to a recent string of encouraging news for Europe’s struggling economies.

The European Commission’s economic sentiment indicator for the 16 nations using the euro single currency rose to 80.6 points from 76 points in July, continuing a gradual climb away from a record low 64.6 points in March.

The figure defied the expectations of analysts, polled by Dow Jones Newswires, who had predicted a more modest rise to 78 points. “Recovery of the industrial confidence indicator continued, backed by a strong increase in production expectations and manufacturers’ assessment of order books,” the EU’s executive body said in a statement.

However, it noted that “stocks of finished goods, production expectations and order books remain well below their longterm averages.” The long-term average rate, since 1990, is 100. Among the larger EU economies, the greatest signs of improvement in confidence were seen in Britain, up 9.7 points, followed by the Netherlands, 7.6 points, and European economic powerhouse Germany which saw economic sentiment rise by 5.1 points in August.

There were also “noteworthy” gains in Poland, Italy and Spain.

The commission said the increase was due to a general improvement across the board, with only retail trade a little sluggish.

The services sector gained considerably, while industry continued to climb out of the trough from March.

In the wider 27-nation European Union, the economic sentiment indicator rose to 80.9 points from 75 points in July.

Analysts said the figures bolstered hopes for a recovery.

“All in all, today’s indicators will be an important part of the ECB’s (European Central Bank) briefing files for next week,” said Carsten Brzeski at Global Economics.

“Central bankers will be facing a somewhat changed economic environment: the worst is over and the economy is stabilising,” he said, but warned: “the labour market and a possible credit crunch are clear speed bumps on the road to recovery.”

The commission’s separate business climate indicator also continued to recover, improving for a fifth consecutive month with a rise to negative 2.21 points from minus 2.70 points in July.

Improvement was particularly strong in production trends, while “both order books and export order books continued to improve from the trough reached in June.

“Managers’ opinion of stocks of finished goods improved as well, even though the level of stocks was still considered excessive,” the commission said.

Recent data has shown European factory orders up, with the eurozone monthly trade surplus doubling.

Germany and France have lumbered out of recession and very nearly brought the rest of the eurozone with them.

However amid fears of double-dip recession, EU commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso warned that Europe’s economy has not made a “firm recovery” from the crisis and the situation remains “very volatile.”

BERLIN - The recession in Germany, Europe’s largest economy, may be slightly less bad than initially feared this year, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday.

The German economy is poised to shrink “by five or six percent” in 2009, Merkel said in a speech, suggesting a possible upward revision to current government forecasts which predict a contraction of six percent.

Germany has rebounded with unexpected speed from its worst recession in over six decades, edging back to growth in the second quarter of this year with an expansion of 0.3 percent.

Positive business surveys and other

forward-looking indicators have also suggested brighter times ahead, prompting several private forecasters to raise their prediction for total economic output in 2009.

The president of the country’s central bank, Axel Weber, said recently he also expected Germany’s economy to do better than expected this year.

Merkel, who is aiming to secure a second term in elections on September 27, warned that while the worst may be behind Germany, it was still too soon to declare victory against the financial crisis.

“The fact we seem to have reached the bottom must not divert us from the fact that this is by far the worst economic crisis that Germany has ever had to survive in its 60 years,” she said.

US newspaper ad revenue slide continues

WASHINGTON - US newspaper advertising revenue fell by 29 percent in the second quarter, continuing a slide which has left many dailies awash in a sea of red ink.

Print and online advertising revenue dropped to 6.8 billion dollars in the second quarter of the year from 9.6 billion dollars a year ago, according to figures released by the Newspaper Association of America (NAA).

Print advertising revenue declined by 30.1 percent to 6.2 billion dollars including a 40.4 percent fall in classified advertising revenue to 1.5 billion dollars.

Classified ad revenue at US newspapers has collapsed in recent years faced with competition from free online classified sites such as Craigslist.

Online advertising revenue declined by 15.9 percent in the quarter to 653.1 million dollars.

Newspapers across the United States have been grappling with a slide in advertising revenue, steadily declining circulation and the migration of readers to free news online.

NAA president and chief executive John Sturm said the weak numbers “come as no

surprise” and “there are, however, reasons to remain optimistic.”

“When the economy eventually begins its recovery, advertisers will return to spending, and newspapers will find themselves extremely well positioned to harness the strength of their print and digital platforms to build a brighter future,” he said in a statement.

Print advertising revenue at US newspapers has now fallen for 12 quarters in a row according to NAA figures while online ad revenue has dropped for the past five quarters.

The industry has been hit by a wave of bankruptcies, job cuts and closures including a bankruptcy filing by the Tribune Co., owner of the Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times and other major papers.

The 100-year-old Christian Science Monitor went online-only earlier this year and two major dailies, the Rocky Mountain News of Denver, Colorado, and the Seattle PostIntelligencer, have shut down in recent months.

With advertising revenue evaporating, top US newspaper executives have been looking at ways to begin charging readers for news on the Web.

Levi Strauss tempts Indians with denim on credit Agence France-Presse

BANGALORE - US jeans maker Levi Strauss has begun selling its denim on credit in India, offering shoppers the chance to buy a 30dollar pair of its famous trousers in three installments.

The technique of allowing deferred payments is an age-old commercial strategy more common for sales of washing machines or cars, but the company has embraced the concept to tempt aspirational Indians with restricted budgets.

“This is the first time the world over that apparel like jeans and shirts are being sold on credit that will be deducted by the bank in three monthly installments,” Levi Strauss India managing director Shumone

Chatterjee told AFP. The group, which claims to have created the first blue jeans in 1873, has teamed up with India’s largest private bank, ICICI Bank, to launch the initiative in the IT hotspot of Bangalore.

Buoyed by the response, Levi’s said it was in talks with other private banks such as HDFC to offer credit to a wider range of buyers and in other cities around the country.

population of IT workers, was an obvious starting point.

“Ever since we introduced the ‘buy now, pay later’ scheme without interest or hidden charges in June, our sales have surged by 1015 percent,” Levi’s franchise manager M. Aaron told AFP from his spacious showroom in Bangalore.

The only condition for the credit is that the bill should be for at least 1,500 rupees (30 dollars), which means interest-free repayments of 500 rupees a month.

TIMIKA - An unidentified armed group again attacked a Freeport vehicle convoy near Mile 42-41 on the Tembagapura-Timika road on Friday at 5.25 pm local time.

The convoy comprising an employee bust and a truck left Mile 50 for a Timika water-channel terminal when being shot from the left side of the road.

Police and military personnel guarding the Freeport convoy shot back at the attackers. There were no injuries or casualties in the shootout.

“Yes, there was shooting aimed at a workers’ bus and trailer truck at Mile 42-41 yesterday afternoon,”

Senior Commissioner Agus Rianto, a spokesman of the Papua police , said here on Saturday.

JAKARTA - Indonesian police Thursday were pursuing an Al-Qaeda connection to the twin suicide attacks on Jakarta hotels, after confirming that a suspect in custody had been a follower of Osama bin Laden.

National police Chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri said the suspect, Indonesian publisher and Islamist blogger Mohammed Jibril Abdurahman — known on the Internet as the “Prince of Jihad” — was once a member of Al-Qaeda.

Mohammed Jibril was arrested outside Jakarta late Tuesday on suspicion of channeling money from abroad to finance the July 17 attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton

hotels, which killed nine people including the two bombers.

The blasts marked the bloody end of a four-year hiatus in such attacks in the world’s most populous Muslim country, and have been blamed on a terror network led by Malaysian extremist Noordin Mohammed Top. Asked by reporters whether Mohammed Jibril had been a member of Al-Qaeda, Danuri said “yes.”

“Let the process proceed, there will be more developments,” he said, without elaborating.

Police say they have killed three cell members and arrested five since July 17, including a Saudi national who allegedly smuggled money from abroad to pay for the operation.

The source of the funds is not

known, but police have said they are investigating whether the money came from Al-Qaeda brokers in the Middle East or South Asia, among other possible donors.

Mohammed Jibril studied Islam in Karachi, southern Pakistan, where he joined an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group known as Al-Ghuraba, or The Foreigners, according to analysts such as the Brussels-based International Crisis Group (ICG).

Al-Ghuraba was set up in 1999 by Hambali, the Indonesian alleged point-man for Al-Qaeda in Southeast Asia who is in US custody at Guantanamo Bay, analysts said.

It trained Southeast Asian members of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) regional terror network blamed for

the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, and served as a conduit between JI and Al-Qaeda.

The August 2003 arrest of Hambali, seen as JI’s operations chief, led to the breakup of AlGhuraba but analysts said the Pakistan connection could have been reestablished and used to finance the latest attack in Indonesia.

Hambali’s younger brother and Al-Ghuraba alumni Gun Gun Rusman Gunawan was sentenced to four years’ jail in Indonesia in 2004 for helping to finance the 2003 Marriott attack. He served only two years and is now free.

A spokesman for Mohammed Jibril’s family, Irfan S. Awwas, rejected accusations the publisher had

any role in the hotel attacks.

“Do you think Al-Ghuraba is a terrorist movement?” he asked reporters as he appeared with the suspect’s father, radical cleric Abu Jibril, at the national police headquarters to demand Mohammed Jibril’s release.

“As a student there (in Pakistan), anyone can join any organisation such as Al-Ghuraba — it’s not forbidden.”

“Only 12 are known to have come aboard a cruise ship,” Ida Komang Wisnu said.

The number of French tourists to Bali continued to increase to contribute up to 4.27 percent of the total number of foreign tourists to the island reaching 1,070,595, which were up from 971,061 recorded in the previous year.

Levi Strauss tempts Indians with denim on credit Agence France-Presse

BANGALORE - US jeans maker Levi Strauss has begun selling its denim on credit in India, offering shoppers the chance to buy a 30dollar pair of its famous trousers in three installments.

The technique of allowing deferred payments is an age-old commercial strategy more common for sales of washing machines or cars, but the company has embraced the concept to tempt aspirational Indians with restricted budgets.

“This is the first time the world over that apparel like jeans and shirts are being sold on credit that will be deducted by the bank in three monthly installments,” Levi Strauss India managing director Shumone

Chatterjee told AFP. The group, which claims to have created the first blue jeans in 1873, has teamed up with India’s largest private bank, ICICI Bank, to launch the initiative in the IT hotspot of Bangalore.

Buoyed by the response, Levi’s said it was in talks with other private banks such as HDFC to offer credit to a wider range of buyers and in other cities around the country.

“Ever since we introduced the ‘buy now, pay later’ scheme without interest or hidden charges in June, our sales have surged by 1015 percent,” Levi’s franchise manager M. Aaron told AFP from his spacious showroom in Bangalore.

The only condition for the credit is that the bill should be for at least 1,500 rupees (30 dollars), which means interest-free repayments of 500 rupees a month.

The lowest price for a pair of jeans in Aaron’s store is 1600 rupees.

TIMIKA - An unidentified armed group again attacked a Freeport vehicle convoy near Mile 42-41 on the Tembagapura-Timika road on Friday at 5.25 pm local time.

The convoy comprising an employee bust and a truck left Mile 50 for a Timika water-channel terminal when being shot from the left side of the road.

Police and military personnel guarding the Freeport convoy shot back at the attackers. There were no injuries or casualties in the shootout.

“Yes, there was shooting aimed at a workers’ bus and trailer truck at Mile 42-41 yesterday afternoon,”

Senior Commissioner Agus Rianto, a spokesman of the Papua police , said here on Saturday.

The latest shootout was part of a series of terror actions occurring in the area of US gold and copper mining company PT Freeport Indonesia in Timika, Mimika District, Papua Province, during July and August this year.

The shooting incidents which have killed two Freeport employees, including an Australian national, have forced a cease of the company’s worker mobility between Timika and Tembagapura for two weeks.

More than one thousand employees of PT Freeport Indonesia and its contractors returned to work in Tembagapura on Thursday (Aug.

JAKARTA - Indonesian police Thursday were pursuing an Al-Qaeda connection to the twin suicide attacks on Jakarta hotels, after confirming that a suspect in custody had been a follower of Osama bin Laden.

National police Chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri said the suspect, Indonesian publisher and Islamist blogger Mohammed Jibril Abdurahman — known on the Internet as the “Prince of Jihad” — was once a member of Al-Qaeda.

Mohammed Jibril was arrested outside Jakarta late Tuesday on suspicion of channeling money from abroad to finance the July 17 attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton

hotels, which killed nine people including the two bombers.

The blasts marked the bloody end of a four-year hiatus in such attacks in the world’s most populous Muslim country, and have been blamed on a terror network led by Malaysian extremist Noordin Mohammed Top. Asked by reporters whether Mohammed Jibril had been a member of Al-Qaeda, Danuri said “yes.”

“Let the process proceed, there will be more developments,” he said, without elaborating.

Police say they have killed three cell members and arrested five since July 17, including a Saudi national who allegedly smuggled money from abroad to pay for the operation.

The source of the funds is not

known, but police have said they are investigating whether the money came from Al-Qaeda brokers in the Middle East or South Asia, among other possible donors.

Mohammed Jibril studied Islam in Karachi, southern Pakistan, where he joined an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group known as Al-Ghuraba, or The Foreigners, according to analysts such as the Brussels-based International Crisis Group (ICG).

Al-Ghuraba was set up in 1999 by Hambali, the Indonesian alleged point-man for Al-Qaeda in Southeast Asia who is in US custody at Guantanamo Bay, analysts said.

It trained Southeast Asian members of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) regional terror network blamed for

the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, and served as a conduit between JI and Al-Qaeda.

The August 2003 arrest of Hambali, seen as JI’s operations chief, led to the breakup of AlGhuraba but analysts said the Pakistan connection could have been reestablished and used to finance the latest attack in Indonesia.

Hambali’s younger brother and Al-Ghuraba alumni Gun Gun Rusman Gunawan was sentenced to four years’ jail in Indonesia in 2004 for helping to finance the 2003 Marriott attack. He served only two years and is now free.

A spokesman for Mohammed Jibril’s family, Irfan S. Awwas, rejected accusations the publisher had

any role in the hotel attacks.

“Do you think Al-Ghuraba is a terrorist movement?” he asked reporters as he appeared with the suspect’s father, radical cleric Abu Jibril, at the national police headquarters to demand Mohammed Jibril’s release.

“As a student there (in Pakistan), anyone can join any organisation such as Al-Ghuraba — it’s not forbidden.”

EHDEN - The small town of Ehden in north Lebanon gained an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records on Saturday for producing the largest ever kebbe — a dish of minced meat and cracked wheat.

A representative of Guinness World Records was on hand to certify that the giant meal prepared in a

festive atmosphere by 25 women in the town square measured up before presenting the official paperwork.

To create the giant circular 20square-metre (215-square-foot) kebbe they had to mix 120 kilos of mince, 80 litres of olive oil, 80 kilos of cracked wheat, five kilos of salt and a mere kilo of pepper.

After the huge dish was cooked the certificate was officially handed over to Rima Franjieh, wife of MP Sleiman Franjieh.

Melting glaciers threaten ‘Nepal tsunami’

LUKLA - Over two decades, Funuru Sherpa has watched the lake above his native village of Dengboche in Nepal’s Himalayas grow, as the glacier that feeds it melts.

The 29-year-old, who runs a busy Internet cafe for tourists visiting the Everest region, remembers his grandfather telling him that 50 years ago the lake did not exist.

“Before, it was all ice,” he told AFP in the eastern Himalayan town of Lukla, in the shadow of Mount Everest.

“This is proof that the glaciers in the high Himalayas are melting. And that must be because the temperatures have gone up.”

Scientists say the Imja Glacier above Dengboche is retreating by about 70 metres (230 feet) a year, and the melting ice has formed a huge lake that could devastate villages downstream if it bursts.

The trend is not new. Nepal’s International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), which has studied the Himalayas for three decades, says many of the country’s glaciers have been retreating for centuries.

But ICIMOD glaciologist Samjwal Ratna Bajracharya said this was now happening at an alarming speed, with temperatures in the Himalayas rising at a much faster rate than the global average.

“Our studies of the past 30 years show that the temperatures (in the Himalayas) are rising up to eight times faster than the global average.

Melting is taking place higher and faster,” Bajracharya told AFP. “The melting of glaciers and formation of glacier lakes is a key indicator of the temperature rise. And lately, we have seen massive ice melt.”

cial lakes and experts say at least 20 are in danger of bursting.

At almost one square kilometre (0.38 square miles), the Imja lake is the country’s second biggest, estimated to hold 36 million cubic metres (47 million cubic yards) of water, and is considered the biggest flood threat.

It is a subject close to the heart of Nepalese mountaineer Apa Sherpa, who has climbed Everest a record 19 times.

In 1985 Apa Sherpa lost his house and farm when the Dig Tsho glacial lake burst, causing a giant wave to flow down the mountain.

Seven people were killed by the flood, which swept away bridges and houses and destroyed a new hydropower station. “For me, climate change is personal,” said the climber, who dedicated his latest Everest expedition to raising awareness of the impact of climate change on mountain communities.

HANOI - Government loudspeakers are spreading communist propaganda over the streets of Hanoi ahead of the 40th anniversary Wednesday of Ho Chi Minh’s death.

But few people seem to be listening.

“The grand sacrifices (of Ho Chi Minh), brilliant moral revolutionary, remain the sun lighting the way for the nation,” a government employee announces into his microphone.

Yet even the messenger doubts the effect of his words about Ho, the country’s founding president.

“I see very few people listening,” he says, unwilling to be named.

They may admire Ho but many of Vietnam’s young people — who make up more than half the population — say they have no time for government campaigns in his name.

“Following someone, you do that on your own, in your heart, not in response to a general movement,” said Tran Hong Linh, 19, a university student.

Construction worker Nguyen Thanh Lam, 20, said he heard a lot of talk on the radio about Ho, “but nothing came into my ears.”

Government campaigns for people to live and work according to Ho’s example are a “fiasco” that bring no benefit to the people, said a shop manager, who asked not to be identified.

“I think he is an admirable figure although now there are so many opposite opinions about his life and career,” said a woman, 28, who works for a foreign company and also would not be named.

She is among the 51 percent of Vietnam’s population who, official data say, are under the age of 30, meaning they were born after the war against the US ended in 1975 and have grown up in the country’s booming market economy.

European economic confidence improves: EU survey

BRUSSELS - European business and consumer confidence firmed in August for a fifth month running, an EU survey showed Friday, adding to a recent string of encouraging news for Europe’s struggling economies.

The European Commission’s economic sentiment indicator for the 16 nations using the euro single currency rose to 80.6 points from 76 points in July, continuing a gradual climb away from a record low 64.6 points in March.

The figure defied the expectations of analysts, polled by Dow Jones Newswires, who had predicted a more modest rise to 78 points. “Recovery of the industrial confidence indicator continued, backed by a strong increase in production expectations and manufacturers’ assessment of order books,” the EU’s executive body said in a statement.

However, it noted that “stocks of finished goods, production expectations and order books remain well below their longterm averages.” The long-term average rate, since 1990, is 100. Among the larger EU economies, the greatest signs of improvement in confidence were seen in Britain, up 9.7 points, followed by the Netherlands, 7.6 points, and European economic powerhouse Germany which saw economic sentiment rise by 5.1 points in August.

There were also “noteworthy” gains in Poland, Italy and Spain.

The commission said the increase was due to a general improvement across the board, with only retail trade a little sluggish.

The services sector gained considerably, while industry continued to climb out of the trough from March.

In the wider 27-nation European Union, the economic sentiment indicator rose to 80.9 points from 75 points in July.

Analysts said the figures bolstered hopes for a recovery.

“All in all, today’s indicators will be an important part of the ECB’s (European Central Bank) briefing files for next week,” said Carsten Brzeski at Global Economics.

“Central bankers will be facing a somewhat changed economic environment: the worst is over and the economy is stabilising,” he said, but warned: “the labour market and a possible credit crunch are clear speed bumps on the road to recovery.”

The commission’s separate business climate indicator also continued to recover, improving for a fifth consecutive month with a rise to negative 2.21 points from minus 2.70 points in July.

Improvement was particularly strong in production trends, while “both order books and export order books continued to improve from the trough reached in June.

“Managers’ opinion of stocks of finished goods improved as well, even though the level of stocks was still considered excessive,” the commission said.

Recent data has shown European factory orders up, with the eurozone monthly trade surplus doubling.

Germany and France have lumbered out of recession and very nearly brought the rest of the eurozone with them.

However amid fears of double-dip recession, EU commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso warned that Europe’s economy has not made a “firm recovery” from the crisis and the situation remains “very volatile.”

BERLIN - The recession in Germany, Europe’s largest economy, may be slightly less bad than initially feared this year, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday.

The German economy is poised to shrink “by five or six percent” in 2009, Merkel said in a speech, suggesting a possible upward revision to current government forecasts which predict a contraction of six percent.

Germany has rebounded with unexpected speed from its worst recession in over six decades, edging back to growth in the second quarter of this year with an expansion of 0.3 percent.

Positive business surveys and other

forward-looking indicators have also suggested brighter times ahead, prompting several private forecasters to raise their prediction for total economic output in 2009.

The president of the country’s central bank, Axel Weber, said recently he also expected Germany’s economy to do better than expected this year.

Merkel, who is aiming to secure a second term in elections on September 27, warned that while the worst may be behind Germany, it was still too soon to declare victory against the financial crisis.

“The fact we seem to have reached the bottom must not divert us from the fact that this is by far the worst economic crisis that Germany has ever had to survive in its 60 years,” she said.

US newspaper ad revenue slide continues

WASHINGTON - US newspaper advertising revenue fell by 29 percent in the second quarter, continuing a slide which has left many dailies awash in a sea of red ink.

Print and online advertising revenue dropped to 6.8 billion dollars in the second quarter of the year from 9.6 billion dollars a year ago, according to figures released by the Newspaper Association of America (NAA).

Print advertising revenue declined by 30.1 percent to 6.2 billion dollars including a 40.4 percent fall in classified advertising revenue to 1.5 billion dollars.

Classified ad revenue at US newspapers has collapsed in recent years faced with competition from free online classified sites such as Craigslist.

Online advertising revenue declined by 15.9 percent in the quarter to 653.1 million dollars.

Newspapers across the United States have been grappling with a slide in advertising revenue, steadily declining circulation and the migration of readers to free news online.

NAA president and chief executive John Sturm said the weak numbers “come as no

surprise” and “there are, however, reasons to remain optimistic.”

“When the economy eventually begins its recovery, advertisers will return to spending, and newspapers will find themselves extremely well positioned to harness the strength of their print and digital platforms to build a brighter future,” he said in a statement.

Print advertising revenue at US newspapers has now fallen for 12 quarters in a row according to NAA figures while online ad revenue has dropped for the past five quarters.

The industry has been hit by a wave of bankruptcies, job cuts and closures including a bankruptcy filing by the Tribune Co., owner of the Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times and other major papers.

The 100-year-old Christian Science Monitor went online-only earlier this year and two major dailies, the Rocky Mountain News of Denver, Colorado, and the Seattle PostIntelligencer, have shut down in recent months.

With advertising revenue evaporating, top US newspaper executives have been looking at ways to begin charging readers for news on the Web.

‘Operation Nakam’: true story behind Tarantino’s film Agence France Presse

VIENNA – Quentin Tarantino’s new film “Inglourious Basterds” about a Jewish militia that killed and scalped Nazis in World War II is not as far-fetched as it might sound.

In fact, there was a real-life squadron of Jewish soldiers who hunted down SS officers in Austria immediately after the war in an operation called “Nakam” (vengeance in Hebrew), according to one of the troop’s last survivors, 88year-old Chaim Miller.

“We operated in the south of Austria in the days just after the war ended,” the Vienna-born Israeli told AFP via telephone from a Kibbutz near Jerusalem.

“We were soldiers in the Jewish Brigade group of the British army stationed in Tarvisio, Italy, close to the Austrian border. Yugoslav partisans had given us lists of names of Nazi criminals and so we went in groups of three to secretly search them out,” Miller recalled.

when we later showed them our Stars of David. But by then, it was already too late for them,” he said.

“We took them to some woods on the Italian side, gave them a ‘hearing’ for half an hour and then explained to them they’d pay. They remained in the woods forever,” Miller said.

“I participated in a number of actions of this type and several other groups worked in the same way.”

Historians are divided about the exact number of executions carried out in the operation, which was coordinated by the future chief of staff of the Israeli army, Chaim Laskov, with estimates ranging from 100 to 300.

Born Alfred Mueller in 1921 in in a working-class neighbourhood in Vienna, Chaim Miller emigrated to Palestine in February 1939 after the Nazi annexation of Austria. His parents stayed in Vienna and were murdered in the Holocaust.

NEW YORK – Authorities will need to conduct toxicology tests, expected to take weeks, to determine what killed celebrity disc jockey DJ AM, a medical examiner’s office spokeswoman said Saturday.

An autopsy Saturday of the 36year-old was inconclusive, said the spokeswoman, Ellen Borakove.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that police found a crack pipe and prescription pills in the apartment where they discovered DJ AM’s body Friday evening. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, had openly discussed past addictions to crack cocaine, Ecstasy and other drugs. In October, MTV was to debut his reality show, “Gone Too Far,” in which he and concerned families staged interventions for drug abus-

ers. MTV hasn’t said whether Goldstein’s show will air.

In an interview with the AP last month, he said the show provided a “terrifying” reminder of his own addiction. “I have to constantly remind myself why I’m here and remember what it was like,” he said.

Goldstein rose to fame several years ago as a deejay known for his mashups — blends of at least two songs. He performed in clubs, on concert stages and at exclusive Hollywood parties. His personal life also garnered attention, as he dated actress-singer Mandy Moore and reality TV star Nicole Richie, the daughter of singer Lionel Richie.

bia, S.C., that killed four people. He was flying in a Learjet after a performance with Travis Barker, a drummer for the pop-punk band Blink-182 and Goldstein’s partner in the duo TRVSDJ-AM. Barker and Goldstein were burned. Goldstein had to get skin graft surgery but resumed performing about a month later. He told the AP he felt blessed to have survived but was still shaken by the crash.

“I guess I get why they call it ‘post-trauma,’ because it was very tough. I have really bad days, and I have really OK days,” he said.

His body was found after a friend called police to say he was unable to get into the home in New York City’s trendy SoHo neighborhood.

Paramedics had to break down the door before they found him, shirtless and wearing sweatpants, in his bed around 5:20 p.m. on Friday, the law enforcement official said. There was no evidence of foul play.

BERLIN - Germany’s Social Democrats hope to wrest two states from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives in polls Sunday and slow her formidable momentum toward a second term in next month’s general election.

The Social Democrats, junior partners in Merkel’s fractious leftright government, are gunning for ruling majorities in two of three state elections and dreaming of turning the tide ahead of the September 27 national poll.

Some 6.2 million voters are called to cast ballots in the excommunist eastern states of Saxony and Thuringia and Saarland on the French border.

The polls come at the end of a tough week for Merkel, amid turmoil over the future of automaker Opel, sniping between her conservatives and their favoured coalition partners, the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), and a flap

over a dinner she held for Germany’s top banker.

Merkel’s Christian Union (CDU/CSU) is leading the Social Democrats (SPD) at the national level by an around 15-point margin.

But polls show the conservatives may lose power in Thuringia and Saarland while holding onto the state house in Saxony.

The Social Democrats say they are prepared to take over by entering into alliances with the far-left Die Linke, a relatively new political party comprised of disaffected SPD members and former East German communists.

“Red-red” coalitions are common in the east of the reunited country but have been taboo in the west, where many see Die Linke as too radical and tainted by its historical links with the party that built the Berlin Wall.

Saarland would be the first western state to see such a governing alliance.

TRIPOLI - Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi, who celebrates 40 years in power on Tuesday, has imposed himself as a key international player the West cannot ignore despite his decades-long image of political pariah.

As a young colonel, Kadhafi on September 1, 1969, led a coup overthrowing the Western-backed elderly King Idriss, and quickly established himself as a belligerent, unpredictable and flamboyant leader of the oil-rich nation.

Reputedly born in a Bedouin tent in the desert near Sirte in 1942, Kadhafi alienated the West soon after seizing power, accusing it of launching a “new crusade”

against the Arabs.

His idol was Egyptian president and fervent Arab nationalist Gamal Abdel Nasser, and he has variously declared himself a fan of Mao Zedong, Stalin and even Hitler.

Libya was for decades linked to a spate of terrorist attacks the world over, with Kadhafi also being accused of using Libya’s oil wealth — the country is Africa’s third largest producer after Nigeria and Angola — to fund and arm rebel groups across Africa and beyond.

Libya became an international pariah in the aftermath of the 1988 Lockerbie airliner bombing but relations began to thaw when it agreed in 2003 to pay compensation to the families of the 270 people who were killed.

COPENHAGEN - A Saudi lawyer has demanded a public apology from a number of Danish dailies that reprinted a controversial cartoon of Prophet Mohammed in February 2008, Danish media reported on Sunday.

The lawyer, identified as Faisal A.Z. Yamani from Jeddah, sent an email to the newspapers that republished the drawing first printed in 2005 and demanded that they print an apology by the end of September, Danish news agency Ritzau reported.

“It should be a clear, public and

unconditional apology for the offence and harm caused by their newspaper,” Yamani wrote, demanding that the statement appear in the first three pages of the newspaper and in four languages, Danish, French, English and Arabic.

The caricature features Prophet Mohammed’s head with a turban designed to look like a bomb with a lit fuse.

It was one of 12 cartoons first published in a Danish newspaper in 2005 and which sparked violent protests across the Muslim world in early 2006.

It was reprinted in mid-February 2008 by some 17 newspapers after

Danish police foiled an alleged plot to kill the cartoonist, again triggering angry reactions in numerous Muslim countries.

Yamani suggested in the email that Danish interests in the Middle East could suffer if an apology was not forthcoming.

Danish products have been boycotted in some Middle Eastern countries in recent years because of the dispute.

The Danish newspapers’ association, Danske Dagblades Forening, said it would consult the foreign and justice ministry next week, and contact Danish newspapers to see how many had received the email.

TOKYO - Japan’s politicians have been trying to drum up election fever this summer, but followers of a growing craze are more excited about strongmen who have been dead for centuries — samurai warriors.

A mania over feudal warlords has been sweeping Japan, capturing the imagination of many in a way that grey-suited lawmakers can only dream of as they brave the sweltering dog days ahead of an election on Sunday.

Japan’s medieval knights have become all the rage, battling it out in video games, on cinema screens and in manga comics as sexy sword-wielding hunks.

Sales of their biographies have surged, their family coats of arms have been snapped up as lucky charms, and their former castles are being besieged by legions of fans yearning for a brush with Japan’s long-gone martial noblemen.

Samurai figures now beckon from cellphone wallpapers, and the wives of famous warrior-lords have become the stars of high-rating historical TV dramas.

The general history magazine “Rekishi Kaido” (“History Road”) has run cover stories on samurai lords almost every month for the past year.

The history fad — worth 745 million dollars a year, according to Dai-ichi Life Research Institute economist Toshihiro Nagahama — has been driven by hit video games and the A-List casts of popular samurai television dramas.

But some social observers also say the trend reflects a deeper yearning for potent leaders in a country fatigued by recession and uninspired by a bland political system dominated by two centrist mainstream parties.

In testing times like these, “people tend to turn to strong symbolic figures on whom they can

project their ideals,” said Hideki Nakagawa, a Nihon University sociology professor and an expert on pop culture.

What started out as a trend among video game nerds erupted into a mainstream craze this year after young women latched onto it.

Japanese media quickly found a label for them — “rekijo,” or female history geeks.

In a society where market researchers recently identified a new male demographic as passive ‘herbivores’, “women seek ‘super carnivorous males’,” said Ichiya Nakamura, a media and pop culture researcher at Keio University.

“The warlords were different from the cold-eyed, dispassionate Japanese men of today,” he said.

“They stood out because of their strong personalities.”

In a store dedicated to samurai books and paraphernalia, a 17-yearold female fan agreed wholeheartedly, gushing that the “warlords sacrificed themselves for justice and to protect the people.” Now, she scoffed, “politics purely serves the interests of politicians.”

Currently hip warlords include Oda Nobunaga, the first leader to bring Japan under unified rule, and Date Masamune, dubbed the “OneEyed Dragon” after his solitary eye and known for his iconic helmet with a blade-like crescent.

Denpasar — Having made investigation for one day, the team of Criminal Researcher of South Kuta Sector Police finally could reveal the case on the incineration of Yamaha Mio with police number DK 8180 DT. The motorbike that was previously reported to set fire was in fact intentionally burned.

The doers have been arrested by the South Kuta Sector Police.

Head of the South Kuta Sector Police, Nanang Prihasmoko, said that the suspect named Mohammad Rifky Maulana alias Kiki (15) and Edi Purnomo (19), dwellers staying at a shed on Jalan Uluwatu Gang Lestari, Jimbaran, South Kuta, Badung. They were captured after the police performed an intensive investigation.

“We could capture them last night (Wednesday, Aug 26—Ed).

Economically, the existence of the project may be advantageous, aside from absorbing the labor force, it also enables to create new livelihood for the surrounding community and additional hotel & restaurant tax. However, this matter will have a bad im-

pact on the environment where the villa is established posing an agricultural zone that will accelerate the transfer of land’s function and threat the water availability. Stagnancy of villa development at Wangaya Betan is also worried to result in the same fate as other investment that only divided the land and neglected it. Regency Government of Tabanan has not given explanation to what extent the investor would be given time by the Regent. The Tabanan Regent, Adi Wiryatama, lately admitted to recall the investor in order he could re-affirm about the continuity of such development.

To add insult to injury, Maicon scored a third on the stroke of halftime after a one-two with Milito as Flamini once again failed to track a forward run.

Stankovic’s howitzer from 25 yards halfway through the second period was the final nail in Milan’s coffin but tellingly, the nominal hosts at the San Siro — a ground the two teams share — had a hand in their own downfall as Andrea Pirlo failed to close down the Serbian, giving him time and space to pick his spot.

Raikkonen: Odd grid makes win possible Belgium -Kimi Raikkonen believes the unexpected grid for the Belgian Grand Prix could present him with the opportunity to take Ferrari’s first win of 2009.

The former world champion starts sixth for today’s race behind polesitter Giancarlo Fisichella, Jarno Trulli, Nick Heidfeld, Rubens Barrichello and Robert Kubica. Of those drivers only Barrichello has been a consistent front-runner and won the last race at Valencia.

Belgium - Mercedes-Benz is hoping to reveal its customer engine plans for 2010 at the Italian Grand Prix, amid mounting speculation that a deal to supply Red Bull Racing has now been agreed.

AUTOSPORT revealed in April that Red Bull Racing was chasing a supply of Mercedes-Benz engines for next year, once its current contract with Renault comes to an end later this season.

It is understood that Red Bull Racing’s recent engine problems have accelerated the moves towards Mercedes-Benz, with an announcement on the outcome of those negotiations expected imminently.

A Mercedes-Benz deal with Red Bull Racing would mean McLaren’s engine partner supplying four teams in total next year - as Brawn GP and Force India will also receive customer units.

Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug told AUTOSPORT that he could not reveal the details of any discussions that his car manufacturer was having, but said news would come at the Italian GP in a

rebuilding that we did for our own team two years ago. This is a big, big efficiency programme. It also helps refinancing, but you need to be absolutely very lean. I am not sure whether everyone could do that.”

Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner said earlier in the Belgian GP weekend that his team was close to making a final decision about its plans - and that recent engine problems would not be the only factor in what his team did.

“We’re obviously in a position where, as an independent team, we have a choice of engine,” he said.

“We’ve been very, very happy with the supply that we’ve had from Renault for the last three years.

“Any decision that will be made, will be made not on the outcome of a single weekend but based on what we believe offers us the best opportunity of performance and relationship for the future.

“We haven’t made any firm decisions yet, but we’re obviously nearing a time when we need to make a commitment for next year.”gium, Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009.

Mercedes to sort engine plans by Monza fortnight’s time.

“I definitely will not mention any team names,” he explained. “These are confidential negotiations, and I hope by Monza we know everything - so that is a fortnight away. Everything should be finalised by then.

“We have talked to various teams, more than one team, and I would like some understanding that these are confidential discussions so I cannot talk about it any more.”

F1’s regulations stipulate that any manufacturer supplying more than two teams in F1 needs special dispensation from the FIA. Haug confirmed that his company had received such approval to supply four teams.

“We have that in writing, and I think the FIA is very interested in a manufacturer who helps in this situation,” he explained. “There are not so many who would jump in and volunteer and would want more than one customer team, but you have to have the logistics, you have to have the capacity and you need to build it up.

“We could not have done it two years ago, but all in all we build half the engines for four teams including

“It would be stupid to say that I don’t believe [we can win],” he said after qualifying on Saturday. “We are here to win races, so it is not a big surprise. Yeah, probably we have a better chance with this kind of grid than one with Red Bulls and Brawns and other teams at the front.

“So I think there will be quite a lot of changes at the front tomorrow.”

Raikkonen added that sixth on the

grid was all that was possible from the F60 at Spa, but that he expected the car to perform better on a heavy fuel load.

“I don’t think we could go much faster,” he said. “This is probably the maximum that we can get, you can easily see the lap times in low fuel - we are always a bit behind but it helps us when we put a bit more fuel in the car.

“For tomorrow’s race it is definitely looking different to normal, so I think it looks like a more open race situation than usual. So we will see what we can do.”
