Unveiling ceremony for Moralez held Ceremonia emotiva e inolvidable para Moralez M

The official opening ceremony of UTCH-Ojinaga’s first school year (September-December) took place recently at Los Arcos. During the event, UTCH chancellor Pablo Espinoza Flores stressed the importance of opening a higher education institution in Ojinaga that will help high school graduates obtain an associate technical degree in business development, renewable energy and industrial maintenance in two years; and a bachelor’s degree in two additional years.

Espinoza offered the new students all the educational institution’s support, including workshops, laboratories and bibliography, available at the Ojinaga’s academic unit. He also referred to the beginning of the construction efforts that will allow UTCH-Ojinaga to have its own building within a year and discussed the academic quality of the technological universities in Chihuahua that are certified by specialized agencies.

First responders are navigating dangerous conditions to rescue individuals in need. Other citizens are answering the call to lend a helping hand. State and local governments took a leading role to prepare their communities for the disaster and mobilize once the storm hit.

Many communities need help rebuilding as they assess the damage.

Some will call for Washington to provide aid.

But individuals should look to faith-based and community organizations, which are uniquely positioned to provide relief in Sandy’s after-

math.

The American Red Cross has mobilized more than 1,000 disaster workers in communities up and down the East Coast. Local Red Cross chapters are providing shelters for those who need housing.

To find a shelter, the Red Cross is encouraging people to download the Red Cross Hurricane app, visit its Web site or call 1-800-RED CROSS (733-2767). The Red Cross also offers information about checking your home for structural damage and ensuring your utilities are working properly.

Meanwhile, the Salvation Army has deployed dozens of mobile feeding units in seven states to serve thousands of meals. The organization

hen the Census Bureau released its annual poverty report, it declared that a record 46.2 million persons, or roughly one in seven Americans, were poor in 2010.

The numbers were up sharply from the previous year’s total of 43.6 million. Although the current recession has increased the numbers of the poor, high levels of poverty predate the recession. In most years for the past two decades, the Census Bureau has declared that at least 35 million Americans lived in poverty.

However, in this two-part series, I will identify some misleading conception on poverty in America and the actual statistics in living conditions of the individuals the government deems to be poor. For most Americans, the word “poverty” suggests near destitution: an inability to provide nutritious food, clothing and reasonable shelter for one’s family.

However, only a small number of the 46 million persons classified as “poor” by the Census Bureau fit that description. While real material hardship certainly does occur, it is limited in scope and severity.

The following are facts about persons defined as “poor” by the Census Bureau, as taken from various government reports: *80 percent of poor households have air conditioning. In 1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning. *92 percent of poor households have a microwave. *Nearly three-fourths have a car or truck, and 31 percent have two or more cars or trucks. *Nearly two-thirds have cable or satellite TV. *Two-thirds have at least one DVD player, and 70 percent have a VCR. *Half have a personal computer, and one in seven have two or more computers. *More than half of poor families with children have a videogame system, such as an Xbox or PlayStation. *43 percent have Internet access. *One-third have a wide-screen plasma or LCD TV. *One-fourth have a digital video recorder system, such as a TiVo. For decades, the living conditions of the poor have steadily improved. Consumer items that were luxuries or significant purchases for the middle class a few decades ago have become commonplace in poor households, partially because of the normal downward price trend that follows the introduction of a new product. The average poor person is far from affluent, but his lifestyle is far from the images of stark deprivation purveyed equally by advocacy groups and the media.

In addition to the Red Cross and Salvation Army, local faith-based and community organizations will play vital roles in the emergency response. Heritage’s James Jay Carafano and Jennifer Marshall have identified areas where those organizations can help Americans now and in the future: spiritual relief with depression and loss, public confidence, supplies and volunteers, and long-term rebuilding.

“Grassroots organizations can also provide aid that adapts as needs change,” Carafano and Marshall wrote. “Because the likelihood of confusion and ambiguity increases with the scale of the disaster, improvisation is crucial for effective response. Research has found that the communities themselves are the best sources of innovation and ingenuity – and the stronger the communities, the more resourceful are their efforts.”

Now is the time for those communities to come together. Sandy certainly packed a powerful punch that won’t soon be forgotten. Fortunately, America is resilient.

Calling someone “illegal” is insulting to all of us, signaling support for the xenophobic, anti-immigrant attitudes exhibited by some Americans.

Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, who survived the horrors of the Holocaust as a young man, once said no human being is illegal. Indeed, history has shown that the first step toward isolating a group of people is to label them inferior. Liken them to criminals, as the term “illegal” does, and other groups will become suspicious of them. This is un-American and inhuman.

True, an immigrant who comes to the United States without the proper documentation has broken the rules. When people cross the border without permission or overstay their visas, they’ve violated the policies that govern immigration.

But does this mean they’re criminals, as the “illegal” label implies?

Y tiene razón. Desde que la “Guerra contra la Pobreza” comenzó hace cinco décadas, el gobierno federal ha gastado cerca de $20 billones (ajustados a la inflación) en lo que ahora es un sistema de asistencia social formado por más de 80 programas.

El gasto total anual se está aproximando ahora a $1 billón.

Aunque, trágicamente, este gigantesco Estado del Bienestar ha fomentado la dependencia. Al día de hoy, 100 millones de estadounidenses (casi un tercio de la población de Estados Unidos) reciben ayuda de algún programa de asistencia social del gobierno (y eso sin incluir el Seguro Social, Medicare o el seguro por desempleo).

Como observó Ryan, en la década de 1990 el Congreso aprobó la histórica ley de la reforma de la asistencia social, insertando requisitos laborales dentro del mayor programa federal de asistencia económica. Esto supuso un éxito enorme.

Pero estas reformas están ahora en riesgo. En julio de este año, la administración Obama anunció que quitaría los requisitos laborales de la reforma de la asistencia social: el elemento que verdaderamente hizo que la ley tuviera tal éxito.

En lugar de simplemente proporcionar una limosna, como hacen los programas gubernamentales, los líderes políticos comunitarios son capaces de abordar las necesidades únicas de cada persona, además de que la pobreza material es más a menudo un síntoma que la causa de un problema social.

uring his Oct. 24 speech at Cleveland State University, U.S. Rep. and Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan laid out a vision for reforming the nation’s approach to poverty.

“With few exceptions, (the) government’s approach has been to spend lots of money on centralized, bureaucratic, top-down anti-poverty programs,” Ryan stated. “The mindset behind this approach is that a nation should measure compassion by the size of the federal government and how much it spends.”

This has “created and perpetuated a debilitating culture of dependency, wrecking families and communities,” Ryan said.

He’s right.

Since the War on Poverty began five decades ago, the federal government has spent nearly $20 trillion (adjusted for inflation) on what’s become a welfare system consisting of more than 80 programs. Total annual spending is approaching $1 trillion.

Tragically, this massive welfare state has been a driver of dependency. Today, 100 million Americans — roughly one-third of the U.S. population — receive aid from a government welfare program, not including Social Security, Medicare or unemployment insurance.

As Ryan noted, during the 1990s, Congress passed the historic welfare reform law, inserting work requirements into the largest federal cash assistance program. This was a huge success.

“We saw welfare enrollment drop dramatically, as millions of our fellow citizens gained new lives of independence,” Ryan said. “We saw child poverty rates fall over 20 percent in four years — and we saw employment for single mothers rise.”

But these reforms are at risk. In July, the Obama administration announced it would remove work requirements from welfare reform — the element that had made the law such a success.

Additionally, as Ryan explained: “The welfare reform mindset hasn’t been applied with equal vigor across the spectrum of anti-poverty programs.” Indeed, only a few of the dozens of the federal government’s welfare programs include any type of work requirement. Now, thanks to the Obama administration, even fewer will.

“In this war on poverty, poverty is winning. We deserve better,” Ryan said. “The short of it is that there has to be a balance — allowing government to act for the common good, while leaving private groups free to do the work that only they can do.”

As Ryan explained, it’s necessary to build on the successes of the 1996 welfare reform law. This means restoring work requirements and expanding them to other welfare programs, such as food stamps, one of the largest, fastest-growing welfare programs.

Fighting poverty effectively also means allowing civil society to thrive.

“What is government’s duty when it comes to the institutions of civil society?

Basically, it is to secure their rights, respect their purposes, and preserve their freedom,” Ryan said.

He pointed out the good work of community grassroots leaders such as Bob Woodson, founder of the Center for Neighborhood Enterprise. Woodson’s programs have helped root out crime and violence in some of the nation’s most troubled communities.

He also recognized Dr. Marva Mitchell of Ohio’s Revival Center Ministries International, “who has been ministering to people in the inner cities for decades,” along with the Rev. Willie Peterson, whose NewBirth Project “has helped almost 200 ex-offenders gain and maintain employment.”

Ryan told the story of another grassroots leader, Brian Wade, who not only opened a homeless shelter, but also moved his young family into the shelter for seven years for the family to more fully dedicate itself to the people it and other volunteers aimed to help.

These are a few examples of many grassroots leaders nationwide who are doing similar work to help transform the lives of those in poverty. Rather than simply providing a handout, as government programs do, these grassroots leaders address the individual’s unique needs — and material poverty is more often a symptom, rather than the cause.

Government’s massive, ever-expanding welfare system has failed to help the poor.

Its ever-increasing costs are unsustainable.

It’s time to change course. Ensuring that welfare promotes self-reliance rather than dependence and allowing civil society to fulfill its roll in assisting those in need is crucial to promoting the well-being of the nation’s most needy and to ensuring the strength of society.

Todo lo que pareciera extranjero se empezó a ver con sospecha y la posibilidad de legalizar a millones de indocumentados perdió el sentido de urgencia. Lo primero era salvar al país ante una amenaza externa. Cuando el tema se retoma antes que Bush entregue la presidencia, ya era demasiado tarde y había perdido el apoyo mayoritario en el congreso.

Las palabras de los enemigos de los inmigrantes se impusieron sobre las de sus aliados.

Al final de cuentas, Estados Unidos – estoy convencido – hará lo correcto y legalizará a millones de indocumentados que tanto contribuyen a la economía, cultura y bienestar del país.

Así como Estados Unidos ha sido maravillosamente generoso conmigo, así también espero que lo sea con todos aquellos que llegaron después de mí o sin papeles.

Pero para que eso ocurra, hay que ganar antes la guerra de palabras. Para cambiar las cosas, lo primero que hay que hacer es nombrarlas de una manera distinta. En todo este siglo han ganado el debate los que convirtieron una reforma migratoria con camino a la ciudadanía en “amnistía” y a los indocumentados en “ilegales”.

Nos toca ahora cambiar el lenguaje para, después, cambiar la realidad.

Y el primer paso es no utilizar más la palabra “ilegales” para identificar a los indocumentados.

Nadie es ilegal.

Alpine, TX (10/29/2012) Antonio Reyes ha sido identificado por autoridades federales por el contrabando de objetos únicos de la época precolombina desde México hacia Estados Unidos. Una vez, las autoridades encontraron al señor Reyes en posesión de más de 200 artículos. El 25 octubre, autoridades del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de Estados Unidos (DHS) los devolvieron a los representantes del gobierno de México.

Los agentes del Departamento de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE) piensan que los objetos fueron robados de museos y colecciones privadas. En total, se recuperaron y devolvieron mucho más de 4,000 objetos después que agentes encubiertos de ICE condujeron una serie de investigaciones. Las autoridades de ambos gobiernos de México y Estados Unidos están decididas a incriminar al señor Reyes.

Midland TX (11/01/2012) Las autoridades del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Midland esperan ver si los residentes del distrito aprobarán un bono de $163 millones. Mientras tanto, los miembros de la directiva escolar está revisando una posible exención de 65 y más, si se aprueba el bono. Los residentes pueden votar por la medida cuando entreguen sus votos el 6 noviembre.

Odessa (10/31/2012) Marvin Donald Wilkerson, alias “Mad Dog” de 66 años de edad fue balaceado fatalmente la noche del Día de Brujas por un oficial de policía del Departamento del Alguacil del condado Ector.

La balacera ocurrió aproximadamente a las 7 p.m. después de que los oficiales respondieron a una llamada de emergencia por disparos. Los primeros oficiales que llegaron fueron un delegado, cuyo nombre no se ha revelado; y el alguacil del condado Ector, Mark Donaldson. La guardia forestal de Texas está investigando el incidente que aún tiene que revelar si el alguacil Donaldson hizo el disparo fatal. Lo que se sabe es que el señor Wilkerson aparentemente estaba intentando sacar un arma de fuego que tenía en la cintura cuando fue impactado por la bala mortal.

Pecos (10/08/2012) ACTUALIZACION. La barra radioactiva que estaba perdida fue encontrada por un trabajador del campo petrolífero al lado de la carretera. Midland TX (11/01/2012) Midland Independent School District officials wait to see if district residents will approve the $163 million dollar Bond. Meantime, the school board members are reviewing a possible 65 and over exemption, should the Bond be passed. Residents may vote on the measure when they cast their votes on November 6th.

(10/29/2012) Elections officials are concerned that a problem may exist regarding “Suspended Voters.” Voters who failed to inform election officials of their change of address are placed on the list until such time as the voter can verify their new address. However, for those wondering, suspended voters may still cast their vote.

All that is required is that they sign an affidavit prior to voting. The affidavits can be obtained at the polling place.

Odessa (10/31/2012) 66-year-old Marvin Donald Wilkerson, a.k.a., “Mad Dog,” was fatally shot Halloween night by a law enforcement official of the Ector County Sheriff’s Department. The shooting occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m. after officials responded to an emergency call of “Shots Fired.” The first officers to the scene were a Deputy, whose name is being withheld; and the Sheriff of Ector County, Mark Donaldson. Texas Rangers investigating the incident have yet to reveal if Sheriff Donaldson fired the fatal shot. What is known is that Mr. Wilkerson apparently was attempting to draw a firearm from his pants waist when he was struck by the fatal round.

Pecos (10/08/2012) UPDATE ... Missing radioactive rod was found by an oilfield worker on the side of the highway. Leaflets distributed by the law enforcement officials are being credited with the proper identification by the unnamed worker. The rod, missing since September 11th, is believed to have been misplaced. Authorities are confident that no foul play exists regarding the rod’s disappearance.

(11/02/2012) Death bed confession closes 37-year-old murder case. On the 21st of March, 1975, Dorothy Johnson was brutally stabbed to death in her home. The 62-year-old victim was buried without a suspect being identified until recently, when Sebastian Salcido confessed to committing the murder. Law enforcement authorities feel confident, after having recorded the admission, that all questions have been answered and the case will finally be brought to a close.

sta vez Universal nos hace entrega de 3 CDs muy diferentes: “El Disco del Año” con los éxitos de la radio; “Más de lo que Soy” de Christian Pagan; e “Invencibles” de Alerta Zero.

Aún cuando no soy muy amante de la música regional mexicana, puedo decir sin faltar a la verdad que “El Disco del Año” contiene canciones que me agradan y que se escuchan continuamente en nuestras estaciones de radio local como “Llamada de mi ex” de la Arrolladora Banda Limón, “Un hombre normal” de Espinoza Paz y “El mejor perfume”, entre otras.

Esta es la primera vez que escucho a Christian Pagan—ganador de la primera edición de Idol Puerto Rico—y en verdad me pareció muy bueno su estilo y sus canciones inéditas que presenta en su segundo álbum “Más de lo que Soy”.

Ahora como no soy fanática de la música norteña, decidí darle el disco a una amiga que conoce a Alerta Zero y su música duranguense. Y ella opinó que esta producción es distinta y que la recomienda a aquellos que gustan de este género.

Abalos-Patino, Grace Ann Grace Ann Abalos-Patino, 53, of Odessa died on Oct. 19 in Tulsa, Okla.

She was born on Aug. 10, 1959, in Alpine to Paul C. and Pilar (Martinez) Abalos. Her father preceded her in death, as did her twin daughters, Angela and Jessica. Her mother survives.

She was a legal secretary and a Catholic.

Other survivors include her husband, Pablo Patino of Odessa; sons, Matthew Ramirez, Marcus Gutierrez, Stephen Palma, Jared Madrigal, Ricky Patino, Tommy Patino and Chris Patino, all of Odessa; and daughters, Michelle Abalos and Alyssa Madrigal of Odessa; brothers, Paul Abalos Jr. and Roger Abalos of Hereford; sisters, Dolores Esparza of Red Oak and Billie Villarreal of Hereford; and 17 grandchildren.

Armendariz, Epigmenia S. Epigmenia S. Armendariz, 99, died on Oct. 20 at home, surrounded by her family.

She was born on March 24, 1913, in Terlingua to Benito and Maximiana Santillan. They preceded her in death. Others preceding her in death were her husband of 53 years, Trinidad Armendariz; sons, Pedro and Angel Armendariz; daughter, Rosa Elia Hernandez; brother, Francisco Santillan; and sisters, Fransisca and Pola Aranda.

In June 1934, she married Trinidad at El Pueblito, Municipio de Aldama, Chihuahua, Mexico, where they were proud residents for many years until settling in Texas. Her family remembers her as a loving, humble mother and grandmother who set a great example for her family, and always had an open door and food on the table. She was a devout Catholic.

Survivors include her sons, Hilario (husband of Carolina), Dulces Nombres (husband of Conrada), Leopoldo (husband of Maria Elena), Trinidad (husband of Socorro) and Arturo Armendariz; daughters, Manuela Rodriguez (widow of Natividad), Angelica Lopez (wife of Eliseo); and sister, Inez Venegas. Other survivors include 34 grandchildren; 88 great-grandchildren; 71 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carrasco, Dora Tarin Dora Tarin Carrasco, 53, of Odessa died on Oct. 18 at home.

She was born on Jan. 15, 1959, in Marfa to Primo Quiroz and Socorro Rodriguez (Tarin). Her father preceded her in death, as did a grandson, Ismael Rodriguez.

She was a housekeeper and a Catholic.

Survivors include her daughter, Melissa Carrasco (wife of Cory); brothers, Raul Tarin (husband of Alma) and Primo Tarin Jr. (husband of Yvette); sisters, M. Socorro Tobar (wife of Mac), Aida Villanueva (wife of Israel) and Armida Tarin; and three grandchildren.

Davila, Maria Refugio Maria “Cuca” Navarrette Davila, 88, died on Oct. 31 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, following a lengthy illness.

She was born on June 22, 1924, in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico. She was a widow and a longtime Odessa resident. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Felipe Davila; and daughters, Dolores Avila and Reyes Salinas.

Survivors include her sons, Felipe Davila Jr. (husband of Francis), Joe Davila (husband of Celia) of Odessa, Ismael Davila (husband of Edna) of Pandale, Daniel Davila (husband of Terry) of Odessa, Manuel Davila (husband of Sandra) of Odessa; daughters, Natividad Davila of Odessa, Tony Soto of Las Vegas, Nev., Irene Brito (wife of Robert) of Odessa, Millie Blochowicz (wife of Joe) of Virginia and Herminia Davila of Odessa. Other survivors include her sisters, Maria Gutierrez (wife of Hector) and Pilar Gomez, both of Ojinaga; 33 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

Garcia, Manuel Rios Manuel Rios Garcia, 81, of Odessa died on Oct. 9 in Odessa.

He was born on Nov. 15, 1930, in Torreon, Mexico, to David and Matilda (Rios) Garcia. They preceded him in death, as did a brother, Nino R. Garcia; and a sister, Alicia Garcia.

He married Maria Alicia Perez on Jan. 29, 1960, in Muleshoe, Texas. She survives.

He was a retired auto mechanic and a Catholic.

Other survivors include his sons, Manuel P. Garcia Jr. (husband of Sheri) of Arlington, Johnny Garcia (husband of Elsa) of El Paso; daughter, Gracie G. Hernandez (wife of Bobby) of Odessa; brother, Ruben R. Hernandez, Maria Maria Hernandez, 81, of Odessa died on Oct. 29 at Hospice House in Odessa.

She was born on Nov. 7, 1930, in Chihuahua, Mexico, to Pedro and Maria (Aranda) Sanchez. Those preceding her in death included a son, Jesus G. Hernandez.

She was a housewife and a Catholic.

Survivors include her son, Jose O. Hernandez of Odessa; daughter, Maria D. Molinar of Odessa; sisters, Nancy Villanueva and Gloria Sanchez of Ojinaga and Ludivina Gameros of Villa Aldama, Chihuahua; nine grandchildren; and 17 greatgrandchildren.

Butler, Albert Q. and Katie Lee Albert Q. Butler, 88, died on Oct. 12.

His wife, Katie Lee Butler, 87, died on Oct. 17. Both died in Odessa.

He was born on Jan. 2, 1924, in Dallas. She was born on Nov. 20, 1924, in Dallas. Those preceding them in death included their oldest son, John William Butler of Fort Worth.

She graduated from W.H. Adamson High School in Dallas at age 16 and worked for Aetna Casualty and Surety Co. While working there, Katie met Al through a friend from work. They were married on Jan. 21, 1945, before he went overseas to fight in World War II as a fighter pilot.

Al received a bachelor’s degree in 1950 from Texas A&M University and a master’s degree in engineering mechanics in 1952 from the University of Texas at Austin. He served in various engineering capacities at Austin Brothers Steel Co., Dow Chemical Co., Rexall Drug and Chemical, El Paso Products Co. and the Huntsman Corp. He retired in May 2000 from Huntsman.

Katie worked as a secretary in the central office of the Odessa public school system. She also worked as an assistant for the district superintendent of the United Methodist Church.

They lived in Odessa for more than 50 years. From 1962 to 2012, they were active members of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

Survivors include their daughter, Judith Ann Huffman (wife of Jim); sons, Robert Butler (husband of Julie) and David Randall Butler (husband of Cari); and daughter, Rebecca Lee Hogan (wife of John). Other survivors include their grandchildren, Sherry Hardin (wife of Drew), Jana Ellsworth (wife of Edward), Rebekah Bulen (wife of Stacy), Byron Campbell (husband of Kelly), Sara Mattes (wife of Aron), Michael Butler, Matthew Butler (husband of Nicole), Brett Hogan, Cody Hogan, Michael Tate Butler; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Caldemeyer, Thomas A. Thomas “Tom” A. Caldemeyer, 57, of Odessa died on Oct. 15.

He was born on Dec. 17, 1954, in Evansville, Ind., to Carl Edward and Norma Jean Caldemeyer. They preceded him in death.

He graduated from F.J. Reitz High School in 1973 in Evansville. He received an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Odessa College in December 1999.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a retired police officer. His law enforcement career included 25 years with the Odessa Police Department.

Survivors include Debbie, his wife; son, John Thomas; sisters, Wanda Hert, Dona Head, Sarah Crane and Kula Caldemeyer; and brothers, Daryl, Carl Jr. and Randey Caldemeyer.

Choate, Helen Marie Helen Marie Choate, 84, of Odessa died on Oct. 13.

She was born on March 16, 1928, in Coleman to Andrew and Louise Fenton. Her parent preceded her in death. Others preceding her in death included her brother, Andy Fenton; and daughter-in-law, Vickie Kidd.

She grew up in Gouldbusk. She graduated from Mozelle High School.

She married Everett Kidd in 1946. They were married for 16 years until his death in an automobile accident. She married Garland Choate in 1964. They were married for 34 years until his death of cancer.

She was a member of Beacon Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Jerry Kidd (husband of Lori) of Odessa; three grandchildren, Cody Kidd (husband of Rebecca) of Odessa, Terra Carilli (wife of Bobby) of Orlando, Fla., and Savannah Porter of Odessa; and two greatgrandchildren, Robert and Christopher Carilli of Orlando. Other survivors include her sister, Maureen McClellan of Odessa; brother, Steve Fenton (husband of Hope) of Odessa; many other relatives; and many friends.

Clark, Norma Gale Meeks Norma Gale Meeks Clark, 71, of Odessa died on Sept. 28 in Odessa.

She was born on March 8, 1941, in Abilene to Reuben and Gussie Meeks. They preceded her in death, as did a brother, Ronnie Meeks.

She went to school at Monahans. She married Montgomery Gibbs Clark on Sept.

29, 1959, in Gulfcamp. He survives.

She graduated from Odessa College and worked as a nurse for 15 years, retiring in 2006.

She was born on Sept. 24, 1963, in Abilene to Jerry Don Galle and Donna Hicks Galle. They preceded her in death, as did a sister.

She grew up in Odessa and graduated from Odessa High School. She had a long career with the 7-11 convenience store chain.

Survivors include her son, Bobby Gene Matheny Jr. (husband of Kristen) of Odessa; brother, Donny Galle of San Antonio; and many

McDowell, Doris Doris McDowell, 88, of Odessa died on Oct. 23 in Odessa.

She was born on April 25, 1924, in Magnolia, Ark., to William L. Pearce and Willie Mae Burrows Pearce. Her husband preceded her in death.

She graduated from high school in Magnolia. She married V. M. (Mac) McDowell.

She worked for Avon Products as a district manager out of Kansas City, Mo., for 15 years, retiring in 1979. She also worked for San Angelo Schools for several years.

While in San Angelo, she volunteered for Lighthouse for the Blind as president, with United Way and Meals on Wheels.

She was a member of Southland Baptist church, where she worked and volunteered her time and taught Sunday school.

Survivors include her four children, Sandi Jones (wife of Calvin) of Midland, Doris Ann Smith (wife of Gary) of Odessa, Karen Stubblefield of San Angelo and Karl McDowell (husband of Wendy) of Centennial, Colo. Other survivors include eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She also leaves her companion and friend Tammy Ricks and Charlie, her husband.

Roberts, Antonia “Toni” A. Antonia (Toni) A. Roberts, 96, of Odessa died on Oct. 20.

She was born on April 18, 1916, in Escota, the 11th of 14 children to Diego G. Alvarado and Guadalupe Salazar Alvarado.

She graduated in 1933 from Odessa High School. After graduation, she worked for the John Evans family as a cook and babysitter. Later, she worked at the Jack Nolan Photography Studio. There, she met Paul R. Roberts, a World War II veteran. They were married in August 1953.

Upon Nolan’s retirement, she and her husband took over the studio, which became

Roberts Studio.

Survivors include two sisters, Maria D. Alvarado and Nicolasa Alvarado, both of Odessa; nephews, Lewis Fernandez and Felix Fernandez (husband of Betty) of Odessa; nieces, Olivia Fernandez of Big Spring, Elia Warren of Vancouver, Wash., Olivia Torres of Mexico City, Erlinda Eagleton of Wimberley, Lupe Alvarado of Midland, Judy Alvarado of Austin, Gloria Bales (wife of Scott) of Corpus Christi, Sandra Alvarado of Austin and Brenda Alvarado of Odessa. Roberts, Cecil Perry Cecil Perry Roberts, 67, of Odessa died on Oct. 3 in Odessa.

He was born on April 10, 1945 in Summerfield to Perry and Lila Belle (McDonald) Roberts. They preceded him in death, as did two sisters, Dorothy Baize and Doris Wilson.

Survivors include Linda, his wife; daughters, Heather Simon (wife of Dave) and Kari Stewart (wife of Tony), all of Midland; and five grandchildren.

Rodriguez, Johnny Dominguez Johnny D. Rodriguez, 61, of Odessa died on Sept. 24 in Odessa.

He was born on Dec. 31, 1950, in Presidio to Anselmo Rodriguez and Mary D. Cortez Rodriguez. His mother preceded him in death, as did his father-in-law, Joaquin Saenz; and nephew, Joaquin Saenz II. He grew up in Odessa and graduated from Ector High School. He worked as a salesman for Gasket Service Inc. for 42 years. He was a Vietnam veteran in the U.S. Army.

He married Lorenza Patricia Saenz on July 15, 1993, in Odessa. She survives.

Other survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Marisol R. and Arnold Aranda; son and daughter-in-law, Eli and Mayra Rodriguez; daughter and son-in-law, Dusty M. Rodriguez and Fabian Munoz (Muñoz in Spanish); son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Janice Rodriguez; son and daughter-in-law, Trevor A. Rodriguez and Medrina Rodriguez; and daughter Tahlia M. She was born on Feb. 14, 1935, in Del Rio to Ventura and Juanita (Garza) Flores. They preceded her in death, as did her husband, Federico (Lico) Sosa.

She was a homemaker and a Catholic.

Survivors include her daughters, Jessie Sosa, Manuela Vega and Aurora Cisneros; nine grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren.

Ojinaga makes presence known at festival Festival Internacional Chihuahua By Orlando Chavez Echavarria

Ojinaga tiene una amplia participación en la octava edición del festival

jinaga estuvo presente con todo el esplendor O de su música norteña, interpretada por los grupos: La Leyenda del Bravo, Sombra Norteña y Resonator´s, todos juntos acompañados de la Orquesta Filarmónica del estado de Chihuahua en el show “Somos Ojinaga” que se presentó en la Plaza Mayor de la ciudad de Chihuahua.

Arrancando con el espectáculo, la Orquesta Filarmónica del Estado de Chihuahua, interpretó el corrido de Chihuahua, el cual fue coreado por cientos de asistentes al evento.

Gran parte de ellos llegaron desde Ojinaga e incluso se contó con la presencia de su alcalde, Juan Carlos Valdivia Carnero y su esposa Lucy Marrufo de Valdivia.

Durante el desarrollo de “Somos Ojinaga”, se presentó un material audiovisual que mostró las calles y monumentos más representativos de este municipio, lo que hizo vibrar de alegría a los presentes.

No menos alegres fueron las melodías interpretadas a lo largo del show por los grupos

ojinaguenses: La Leyenda del Bravo y Sombra Norteña, así como por la agrupación Resonator´s de Presidio Texas. Mientras mostraban al público lo mejor de su música, un actor en el escenario, narraba la historia de Ojinaga y su música y un grupo de bailarines ejecutaba con alegría las danzas norteñas típicas de aquella región.

Entre las melodías más representativas que fueron aclamadas por el público estuvo: “El de Ojinaga”, de Sócrates Bustamante y el Corrido de los Mendoza, canciones que despertaron el orgullo del público de Ojinaga y el amor por su tierra ardiente.

As a king, Manasseh’s actions also “led the nation of Israel astray.”

What a mess!

Then came the hook. After being warned by God, Manasseh is led away by the Assyrians with a hook in his nose.

Talk about hitting rock bottom.

Getting dragged off to Assyria with a hook through your nose would give some time for thought and reflection on your mistakes.

Consider II Chronicles 33:12-13: “In his distress, he sought the favor of the Lord God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. And when he prayed to him, the Lord was moved by his entreaty and listened to his plea; so he brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord is God.” Take some time to think about the practical implications of these verses. This is a message about transformation and God’s mercy.

Manasseh deserved to be punished for his evil actions. Yet God answered his humble cry and allowed him to return, so he could right his wrongs. Not all of us get this chance, but when we do, we must take full advantage of the time we are given.

Although Manasseh created a mess, he demonstrates the possibility of change and the noble example of trying to clean up and restore the mess he had made. Maybe you think you’ve made too much of a mess for God to handle.

Take courage in Manasseh’s story, humble yourself greatly before the Lord and allow him to shower your mess with His mercy.

ontra los objetores que nunca faltarán, Miguel Cabrera (pintor) nos dejó este magnífico argumento en el capítulo VII de su obra: “La más sólida y eficaz respuesta a cuantas objeciones han opuesto y pueden oponer a nuestra maravillosa pintura, es la misma; pues yo sé muy bien, que vista con atención, los más lindos ojos no hallarán, cosa que no sea una cabal construcción del más perfecto todo que jamás admiro la pintura”.

La tercera inspección se realizó el 25 de enero de 1787, 36 años después de la efectuada por Miguel Cabrera y su equipo de expertos maestros en el arte de la pintura. Ésta vez, el examen minucioso fue dirigido por el doctor en medicina José Ignacio Bartolache (1739– 1790), que además era matemático, físico y astrónomo, influido de las ideas renovadoras de la Ilustración.

Este singular personaje, guanajuatense y mundialmente conocido por sus pinturas, representa el espíritu de la nueva época que se estaba viviendo en México: “acercamiento a las realidades de la fe desde el punto de vista de la ciencia”. Su trabajo fue el primer intento de investigar y analizar el fenómeno guadalupano con criterios científicos (observación, análisis y experimentación). Él era un creyente ilustrado que había embebido su información académica en los avances y métodos del “siglo de las luces” y quiso afirmar sus convicciones religiosas a través del ejercicio racional.

En este sentido, reunió a cinco facultativos del arte de la pintura y después de cuidadosa observación del sagrado lienzo o tilma, sin estorbo de la vitrina por cerca de dos horas, les propuso estas preguntas: “¿Supuestas las reglas de su facultad y prescindiendo de toda pasión y empeño, tiene por milagrosamente pintada esta santa imagen?

Respondiendo que sí, en cuanto a lo sustancial y primitivo, que consideran en nuestra santa imagen; pero no en cuanto a ciertos retoques y rasgos, que sin dejar duda, demuestran haber sido ejecutados posteriormente por manos atrevidas.

A este notable representante de la nueva ciencia en México le debemos el haber encontrado, traducido y publicado dos pasajes muy interesantes, que se refieren ambos al evento guadalupano. Este descubrimiento lo describe con sus propias palabras el Dr. Bartolache: “Hallé en nuestra biblioteca de la real y pontificia Universidad (de México) y creo justamente, haber hecho un gran hallazgo”.

Se refiere a unos renglones escritos en lengua Náhuatl en una especie de calendario o “añalejo”, que va desde el año 1454 hasta 1737 inclusive. Tales párrafos dicen lo siguiente: “Que el año trece cañas

(porque trae figurada la característica de la caña y debajo el número 13 que corresponde a 1531.

Los españoles tomaron posesión de Cuitlaxcuapa, Ciudad de los Ángeles (hoy Ciudad de Puebla); y Juan Diego manifestó a la amada Señora de Guadalupe de México, llamábase Tepeyacac.

PERO AÚN HAY UN RETO MÁS PARA LA MENTE HUMANA Según los varios grupos de expertos que, en repetidas ocasiones, han examinado y estudiado la imagen, la conservación sorprendente de la Virgen de Guadalupe impresa en una tela tan delicada, hecha de fibra de vegetal expuesta durante tanto tiempo en un lugar húmedo y salitroso sigue siendo un reto para la mente humana.

Aún más sorprendente es saber que ha resistido a un ATENTADO y a un ACCIDENTE. 1.- El accidente, por lo demás fortuito, sucedió en l785, cuando uno de los plateros que limpiaba y pulía el marco de oro de la Guadalupana derramó por descuido o accidente, aguafuerte sobre la tilma de Juan Diego, suficiente para destruir todo el lienzo o tilma por donde chorreo el líquido corrosivo. Este suceso se procuró ocultar con mucho esmero para que no llegara a oídos del entonces abad de la basílica D. José Colorado, cuyo genio intrépido lo hubiera movido a dar un severo castigo al delincuente.

2.- El atentado, fue mucho más grave y conmocionó a la nación entera. Sucedió en la mañana del 14 de noviembre de 1921, cuando Luciano Pérez Carpio, un empleado de la Secretaria Particular de la Presidencia, disfrazado de obrero y protegido por soldados disfrazados de civiles, introdujo a la Basílica dentro de un gran ramo de flores una bomba escondida que depositó enfrente del altar de la Guadalupana, (Basílica Antigua) casi a los pies de la venerable imagen. La bomba detonó y “la explosión fue de tal magnitud que se escuchó en un radio de un kilómetro a la redonda; a la imagen no le pasó absolutamente nada, no así a los candelabros y crucifijo de bronce que estaban en el altar, los cuales quedaron doblados por el impacto.

Conclusión: Así que el frágil lienzo en que se encuentra estampada la imagen de la Guadalupana se ha mostrado más RESISTENTE que el tiempo, las inclemencias del clima, el desgaste de miles de manos devotas que la han tocado y besado, el deterioro del humo y el calor de las velas, el abrazo mordaz del salitre y del aguafuerte y hasta la explosión de la bomba. Tal fenómeno suscita asombro y perplejidad y exige una explicación razonable… HASTA LA PRÓXIMA.
