Local Latina to head commission

K

ansas Gov. Sam Brownback has appointed Roeland Park Mayor Adrienne Foster to head the Kansas Hispanic and Latino-American Affairs Commission (KHLAAC). Calling Foster an “exceptional fit” for the panel, Brownback was quoted in the May 4 announcement as saying, “She has distinguished herself in working to improve economic conditions and (the) quality of life for the citizens of Roeland Park, and through her charitable work has shown a real talent for connecting with people and communities.” Brownback offered the post to Foster in March. She took office on May 1, succeeding Norma Hinton, who’d handled administrative matters since the fall of 2010 after the departure of Shala Perez, the former executive director. Foster, who has commuted daily to Topeka for the full-time paid position, will continue to serve as Roeland Park’s mayor. “All the residents have my cell phone number and e-mail address, and they know they’re welcome to call me anytime,” Foster said, pointed out that the city administrator runs the city’s daily affairs and the City Council meets in the evenings. After a four-year stint on the City Council, Foster successfully ran for mayor in 2009. Her term expires in April 2013. As executive director of the KHLAAC, Foster’s immediate priority is working with the governor and Kim Borchers, his appointments director, to replace four KHLAAC commissioners whose three-year terms expire on June 30. Foster also is proposing an ambitious platform, identifying three goals for commissioners to tackle immediately. Her three-part blueprint is trained on education, health and personal finances. She aims to increase the number of fourth-grade students reading at grade level and raise the state’s high school graduation rate. Foster’s health initiative fixes attention on encouraging kids to be more physically active. She envisions a public-private partnership with such entities as Cerner Corp., the Kansas Children’s Service League, El Centro Inc. and the Mid-America Regional Council. The member partners would coalesce around strategies to boost Kansans’ health and fitness. Another partnership comprising state and local financial institutions, consumer protection groups, and insurance companies
