To address the issue, the department began funding a weatherization program in June – and the program is already making an impact in Kansas. ne can literally count the number of Hispanic women mayors in Kansas history on one hand. Adrienne Foster, the new mayor of Roeland Park, Kan., is among that number. Foster is a second-generation Mexican-American whose grandparents came from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. The Kansas City, Kan., native – who has a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City – started her period as mayor in April. “It is a great responsibility to be the mayor of this city,” Foster said. In addition, Sotomayor had to answer questions about controversial comments she had made. Sen. Patrick Leahe brought up Sotomayor’s comments that a wise Latina could make better judicial decisions than a white man because he hasn’t had the same vital experiences. Sen. Jeff Sessions claimed that Sotomayor’s comment was racist and judgmental. Sotomayor defended herself, claiming: “I want to state upfront, unequivocally and without doubt, I don’t believe that any racial ethnic or gender group has an advantage in sound judging.” Moreover, Sotomayor was questioned about her views on abortion and the right to keep and bear arms. Sotomayor, who has 17 years of experience as a judge, stated that abortion is a right that’s protected by the Constitution. She showed empathy for weapons advocates by stating that the right to keep and bear arms is important to many Americans. Several news agencies, including the Associated Press, have categorized the questions posed to Sotomayor, based on the party affiliations of those asking the questions. They have classified the questions asked by Democrats as friendly overall. They’ve categorized the questions from Republicans as being tough on the judge.

The requirements are to submit an application and a questionnaire, show proof of income or disability and proof of home rental or ownership. “It doesn’t matter that people do not have a social security number or an ITIN number (individual taxpayer identification number),” said Gabrielle Carrasquilla, Weatherization program outreach coordinator. “They just need to prove that they rent or own a house. All the information provided is confidential.” The process takes a few months. “Once the application is approved, we start working with the household,” Carrasquilla explained. “But due to the need of repairs in the area, I can’t promise a time frame. We just say that it takes a couple of months.” The program is considered especially important for those who need it during extreme winter and summer temperatures. “This is a program that is just looking to help the residents of Kansas City, Kan., and the best thing is that it is free,” Carrasquilla said. Where are the Hispanic applicants? he national unemployment rate passed T 9 percent in May, nearly double what it was in May 2008. In the Kansas City area, it

reached 8.6 percent, up from 5.3 percent in May 2008, according to U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some groups are getting hammered harder than others. The jobless rate among Hispanics and African-Americans nationwide was 12.7 percent and 14.9 percent, respectively, and rising. Over the past year, the number of unemployed college graduates doubled – and surveys so far suggest the numbers haven’t yet reached the high-water mark. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reported that employers hired only 19.7 percent of graduates from the 2009 class who applied for a job. In 2007, employers hired 51 percent of new graduates. Most, with thousands of dollars in student loans to repay, find themselves in the grim position of competing for jobs with experienced, reliable older adults who’ve been laid off and can’t afford to retire yet and might be willing to work for less money. Kansas City, Mo., recently received written notification about a federal investigation into the police department’s hiring practices. The Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice seeks to determine “whether the city and/or the Board of Police Commissioners are engaged in a pattern of discrimination against blacks or Hispanics,” the letter advised. A claim that the percentages of Hispanics and blacks are “lower than would be expected for an agency of this type” prompted the investigation. Hispanics comprised 9 percent of Kansas City’s 432,773 residents, U.S. census data from 2006 showed, but they make up only 4 percent and 3 percent, respectively, of Kansas City police officers and civilian employees. The percentage of Hispanic officers doesn’t reflect the city’s population, which is undergoing a dramatic demographic recomposition. Police department officials acknowledged that some time ago and stepped up the department’s outreach in the Hispanic community and intensified efforts to recruit Hispanic applicants. “We’ve said all along that we’re not happy with where the numbers are, and we’re working very hard to increase minority representation in the department to reflect the community that we serve,” said police spokesperson Capt. Rich Lockhart. Despite the success of a 10-week Spanish immersion program now in its second year and invigorated efforts to draw Hispanics into the ranks, Hispanics comprised only two of the latest class of 30 cadets that will graduate in August. That’s one less than the previous police academy class and four less than a 2006 class. The numbers are headed in the wrong direction. Why? Is it driven by a pervasive misperception by Hispanics that as enforcers of the law, they would have to go after their own? If so, a shift from punitive mindset to benevolent mindset is in order. Police officers keep the peace and enforce the law. They don’t “go after” law-abiding residents. They’re public servants engaged to protect the populace and uphold order. They’re the bulwark between society and mayhem. Hispanics who discount becoming a police officer are overlooking a profession that offers them a high level of job security, respectable salary and benefits and a rewarding, unique and powerful opportunity to help their community, ensure that laws are enforced equitably and educate.

Hondurans were afraid that Manuel Zelaya would try to get himself re-elected, illegally, and that Honduras would inherit an authoritarian government. So they threw him out. This is what I understood after a conversation from Tegucigalpa with Roberto Micheletti, the acting president of Honduras. The solution – toppling Zelaya with the intervention of the military and not through the proper legal channels – isolated Honduras from the world and was seen by the United Nations and the Organization of American States as a flagrant violation of democracy. Micheletti hasn’t been recognized as president by any nation. When I spoke to deposed President Manuel Zelaya about the fears of his countrymen, he told me during an interview from Panama that those sentiments didn’t justify a coup. He still insists he never sought re-election. Nonetheless, this crisis emphasizes and reflects, at least

Se está jugando la final de un torneo de fútbol y, de pronto, uno de los equipos dice que en lugar de 90 minutos quiere alargar el juego para que dure 135 minutos o hasta que ellos quieran. Absurdo. Abusivo. Antidemocrático. Eso mismo está pasando en varias naciones de América Latina. A la mitad del partido, algunos presidentes latinoamericanos están cambiando las reglas del juego para eternizarse en el poder. Y como tienen todos los recursos del Estado a su disposición, y la atención de los medios de comunicación, han tenido éxito en sus maniobras para realizar consultas populares y cambiar la Constitución a su favor. El caso más claro es el del presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, quien en 1998 prometió que entregaría el poder en cinco años. Mintió. Ya lleva el doble y amenaza con amarrarse a la presidencia muchos años más. Pero la “reeleccionitis” ha tocado a varios presidentes más. El presidente de Ecuador ya se reeligió. El presidente de Bolivia podría reelegirse a finales de año. El presidente de República Dominicana podría regresar al poder luego de cuatro años fuera. Al presidente de Nicaragua le gustaría que hubiera reelección en su país, y advirtió: “Si Dios me da vida, aceptaría ser presidente o primer ministro.” Y el presidente de Colombia está considerando lanzarse para un tercer período en el poder. ¿Acaso no hay jóvenes lo suficientemente capaces en Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, República Dominicana, Nicaragua y Colombia que pudieran reemplazar a los actuales presidentes? Desde luego que sí. “Si nos dejan”, como dice la canción. El problema para nuestras democracias latinoamericanas es cuando estos presidentes se consideran indispensables. Y es tan grave cuando lo hace un presidente de izquierda -- como Chávez -- como cuando se trata de un presidente de derecha -- como Alvaro Uribe de Colombia. El escritor peruano, Mario Vargas Llosa, es quien ha denunciado este fenómeno de la manera más clara. Le dijo a una estación de radio colombiana que sería “lamentable” que Uribe buscara un tercer gobierno. Y luego criticó a todos. Dijo que las reelecciones son un nuevo “deporte” para los presidentes de América Latina. En Latinoamérica todavía existe la falsa idea de que el ganador de las elecciones se convierte en todopoderoso, como si se tratara de un tlatoani azteca o de un virrey español en época de la Conquista. Muchos presidentes, luego de ganar las votaciones, creen que pueden actuar por encima de la ley y hacer de la Constitución un espagueti. Y eso no debe ser así. Eso es dejar pendiente la democracia. “Las elecciones solas no crean una verdadera democracia”, les recordó hace poco, en El Cairo, el presidente Barack Obama a los líderes del mundo árabe. Y es cierto. Además de realizar elecciones multipartidistas, las verdaderas democracias son justas, respetan los derechos humanos y las libertades individuales y, sobre todo, sus líderes entregan el poder exactamente cuando se comprometieron a hacerlo. Ni un minuto después. Estados Unidos puede ser muy criticable por la manera en que en el pasado ha actuado con otros países. Basta un ligero repaso de sus invasiones e intervenciones en la historia reciente de América Latina. Pero hacia dentro, Estados Unidos ha sido un fiero defensor de su democracia. Desde su fundación en 1776 siempre ha existido un pacífico y ordenado cambio de poder de un presidente a otro. No ha habido un solo golpe de Estado. Y ningún presidente norteamericano se atrevería a cambiar las reglas del juego democrático a la mitad de su mandato. “A mí me encantó ser presidente”, dijo hace poco el ex presidente Bill Clinton al diario The New York Times. “Pero tenemos un límite constitucional y yo sabía eso desde un principio.” Jamás se le hubiera ocurrido a Clinton proponer un cambio a la Constitución, a la mitad de su mandato, para quedarse un tercer período presidencial. Desafortunadamente no se puede decir lo mismo de las aún frágiles democracias latinoamericanas. Mucho se ha logrado, es cierto, al dejar atrás la época de las dictaduras, los caudillos y las siete décadas en el poder del Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) mexicano. Pero el peligro de regresar a gobiernos autoritarios sigue latente. Si nuestros presidentes elegidos democráticamente empiezan a jugar al dictador, perderemos todo el terreno ganado durante décadas.

During the middle of the match, one team suddenly says that instead of 90 minutes, it wants to increase game time to 135 minutes or to however long it wants. What an absurd, abusive, anti-democratic idea. Well, the same kind of thing is happening around Latin America. Halfway through the game, some Latin American presidents are changing the rules of play to stay in power. Because they hold the state’s resources – and the media’s attention – they’ve been successful in their maneuvers to stage public surveys to change their constitutions for their own benefit. The clearest case is that of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who in 1998 promised he would leave office when his term ended in 2003. He lied. He’s been in power twice that long and threatens to hold the presidency for many more years. This “re-electionitis” has taken hold of other presidents. Ecuador’s president has been re-elected. Bolivia’s president might re-elect himself before year’s end. The president of the Dominican Republic might return to power after a four-year waiting period. The Nicaraguan president revealed his desire for re-elections when he said: “If God gives me life, I would accept being president (again) or prime minister.” Colombia’s president is considering running for a third term. Aren’t there any younger candidates in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Colombia able to replace the incumbents? Of course there are. “If they let us,” as the Mexican song goes. The problem for Latin American democracies is when their presidents consider themselves indispensable. It’s just as serious when a left-wing president like Chavez does it as it is when a right-wing president like Colombia’s Alvaro Uribe does it. Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa has sharply criticized this phenomenon. He told a Colombian radio station that it would be “deplorable” if Uribe were to run for a third term. He chastised all the others, too. He said that re-elections have become a new “sport” for Latin American presidents. In Latin America, the fanciful idea still exists that a presidential election winner becomes all-powerful, as if he were an Aztec king or a Spanish viceroy from the Conquistador era. Many presidents, after winning an election, think they can act above the law and do what they want with their constitution. This shouldn’t happen. It’s like leaving democracy up in the air. “Elections alone do not make true democracy,” U.S. President Barack Obama reminded leaders of the Arab world during a recent speech in Cairo, Egypt. That’s a fact. Besides having multiparty elections, true democracies are just, respect human rights and individual liberties – and above all, their leaders cede power when they pledge they will. The United States is open to much criticism for how it has treated other countries. Just look at the list of U.S. invasions and interventions during recent Latin American history. But as far as the United States itself is concerned, the country has been a fierce defender of its democracy. Since its foundation in 1776, there have always been peaceful, orderly changes of presidential power. There hasn’t been one coup. No president would dare change the rules of the democratic game halfway through his term. “I loved being president (...),” former President Clinton recently told The New York Times, “but we had a constitutional limit and I knew that in the beginning.” It would have never even occurred to Clinton, in the middle of his administration, to propose a change in the Constitution that would let him remain in office for a third term. Unfortunately, the same isn’t true of the still fragile Latin American democracies. Much has been achieved since leaving behind the era of the dictators, the strongmen and the seven decades in power of Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party. But the risk of returning to authoritarian regimes remains alive. If our democratically-elected presidents start playing at being dictators, we’ll lose all the ground that it took us decades to gain.

Existen algunos factores a considerar que pueden dar un vistazo hacia el futuro. El 25 junio, el presidente Obama se reunió con varios miembros del Congreso para discutir la reforma migratoria. it represents “amnesty” for lawbreakers. How will it affect you and your family? The short answer is that no one knows because those laws haven’t been written. There are some factors to consider that can give a glimpse into the future. On June 25, President Obama met with several members of Congress to discuss immigration reform. Following that meeting, he gave a short speech, during which he said, “The 12 million or so undocumented workers are here – who are not paying taxes in the ways we’d like them to be paying taxes, who are living in the shadows – that is a group we have to deal with in a practical, common-sense way.” The payment of taxes, including back taxes, is a common theme in immigration reform. It shouldn’t be a surprise that any immigration reform will come with a personal tax bill from each applicant. Such a measure could help pay for the flood of applications. U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, a Democrat from New York and the chairman of the Senate’s main Immigration Subcommittee, commented on his view of successful immigration reform before meeting with the president. Schumer postulated that successful reform would require a biometric national identification card, more secure borders and the concept that all undocumented persons “submit to a rigorous process to convert to legal status” or face immediate deportation. Neither idea was dismissed by President Obama. America’s undocumented immigrants are already feeling the strain of the inability to obtain valid driver’s licenses. Schumer is proposing a nationwide document that would be required to work and live anywhere. His alternative is to submit to an application process that may or may not lead to legal status. It’s clear that 12 million unknown persons living in the United States is a security risk. There must be a mechanism to identify them. It appears that Schumer intends to make immigration reform mandatory, whether one will benefit from it or not. Other glimpses of the future can come from the past. In prior immigration reform sponsored by U.S. Sens. John McCain and Edward Kennedy, successful applicants couldn’t have been convicted of three misdemeanors or one felony. This concept was repeated through many of the other reform bills offered then. It seems likely that some sort of filter based on criminal history will appear in upcoming legislation. This isn’t to say that applicants with some criminal history would be completely unable to adjust their status. Immigration reform doesn’t mean that all the old methods for obtaining legal status in the United States would be eliminated. It’s always possible that an applicant could obtain status through an older application or an old waiver. Unfortunately, the answers to those questions will have to wait until the laws begin to be written. Discussion on immigration reform will begin this fall or in the spring of 2010. on Dec. 31. Carlos Gomez, president and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City (HCC), said: “Pete Levi has been a great leader for the entire business community. We’re happy for him, but he’ll be missed. His leadership will be missed.” Henry Sandate, who serves on both chambers’ boards, said: “Pete Levi served for a very long time and held the position because of his ability and talent to help the greater Kansas City community grow as a region. The collaborations he formed across municipalities and state lines brought attention nationally and internationally to the strengths of Kansas City and the region.” After 19 years at the helm, Levi, 65, is stepping down as the longest-serving president and CEO of the 122-year-old regional business organization. During that time, he was active in the community, serving on the boards of various non-profit organizations, including the Jewish Community Foundation, Midwest Research Institute, the Kansas City Symphony and the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation. In 1995, Levi established the Levi Family Foundation for the Study of Holocaust Archives Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. Levi is the son of immigrants who escaped Germany just months before violent persecution of Jews exploded following Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. His paternal grandparents also escaped, but his maternal grandparents perished in a concentration camp. Levi’s father, Kurt, who died in 2000 at age 90, worked his way up from a job dressing mannequins for a retail store when he first arrived in New York City in 1937 to senior vice president of United Missouri Bank. Levi, who was 6 years old when Kurt brought his family to Kansas City, is a 1962 graduate of Southwest High School. After earning a bachelor’s degree in history at Northwestern University, Levi received juris doctorate and master of laws degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. Upon admission to the Missouri Bar in 1969, Levi went to work as the Mid-America Regional Council’s general counsel. In 1977, Levi became executive director and led the nine-county agency until he left to head up the chamber. Many organizations honored Levi over the years. Awards include the Harmony Humanitarian Award, the American Society of Public Administration’s L.P. Cookingham Public Administration Award and the National Association of Counties’ Arts Advocacy Award. “Pete has been a very strong supporter of the arts,” Sandate said. “That’s been significant. When you attract corporations, you have an executive base that wants to know what it can do leisurely. A strong arts community attracts strong corporate interest.” Levi also supported the POWER mentorship program to help grow small businesses, Sandate said. “Pete’s quick to help businesses succeed,” he said. “He created a pro-business atmosphere.” The owner of State Farm Insurance in Overland Park, Kan., Sandate is chair emeritus of the HCC board. He said: “Fortunately, we have in Pete Levi and Carlos Gomez very talented people, very strong leaders.” Levi reached out to Gomez during his first week of heading up the HCC, Gomez recalled. “Pete let me know he was there to support me,” Gomez said. “He’s always been available if I needed anything and made his staff available as well.” The chamber will conduct a search for Levi’s successor. It’s a position vital to the area’s vitality, Sandate said. “The chambers of commerce publicize what a great business community we have here to the rest of the world,” Sandate stated. “They actively promote our community.”

In addition, Foster is already building partnerships with leaders from other communities to start expanding the program. “I want to educate people who come to our city,” she said. Foster’s plans for Roeland Park are expanding daily – and so are her responsibilities. Every day for Foster is a challenge, particularly when it comes to meeting her goals to educate children and be a good community role model. Whenever she has a chance, she tries to take time to meet with even the youngest in the community who attend government functions to learn about civic processes and the city in general. “Once in a while, children stop by and I talk about civics or what’s going on in the city,” Foster said. As a token of gratitude, children write phrases on her white blackboard at her office, such as “You are the best,” “The mayor rocks” and “We love you.” In addition, Foster must juggle politics with her other responsibilities. She holds a full-time job and takes care of her husband Stephen and their five children. In fact, campaigning for mayor wasn’t easy for her because she was repeatedly questioned about whether she could do the job because of her children and her other job. “I just told them that I get a lot of support of my husband, and I was not going to disappoint them,” Foster said. Foster’s experience in city politics started in 1995, when she worked with the Roeland Park City Council. She played a part in saving the Indian Mission in Kansas City, Kan. Later, Foster served on the council for two years. “That period was a crucial learning experience, because I learned a lot of the processes that take place in the city,” Foster said. Foster’s motivation to run for mayor was the lack of leadership she perceived in the city. “Nothing was done,” she said. “The council asked me to do it (run for office) and I was more than willing to do (something) and help my community,” Foster said.

A committee of local Latino leaders will meet to come up with ways to make sure Kansas City area Hispanics are counted accurately. It can mean the difference in a lot of government money coming to your neighborhoods over the next decade. But they know some people will mistrust how the information will be used. Expect to see a big kickoff event on Sept. 16, the celebration of Mexican Independence Day.

For this column, I have several short items to share. It’s summertime. Hopefully, children are enjoying the break from school, but still remembering to read and do some math occasionally. Parents need to help them keep practicing what they’ve learned, so they won’t be behind when school starts again. One good way to keep kids active is to send them to summer camp. The Mattie Rhodes Center has an art camp. It costs $140 per child, but there are scholarships to help pay all or part of the cost. This year, the camp needs more kids. Usually, its August sessions are sold out, but this year there are still openings. The director, Jenny Mendez, thinks it’s because of the economy, so she wants parents to know there’s still a way for kids to attend camp, even if they need helping paying. Obituary Herminia Egea erminia Egea, también conocida cómo H Herminia dos Santos Alemán Vd. de Egea, falleció el 30 de junio de 2009. Ella

tenía 94 años de edad. La sobreviven su sólo hijo, Dr. Fernando M. Egea; nietos, Fernando M. Egea, Jr., vecino de Chicago, su esposa Susana Egea, e hijo Nicolás Egea; Marcela A. Egea, y sus hijas Hagen Draper-Egea, y Catalina Ruble-Egea vecinas de Overland Park; Luis F. Egea, vecino de Leadwood; y Gabriela C. Egea, vecina de Honolulu, así como sus nueras, Christine Martín-Egea y Marcelina Egea. Herminia nació en la ciudad Santa María de Guía, en la isla de Gran Canaria, islas Canarias, España, el 4 de diciembre de 1914. Su esposo Fernando Egea Ramírez, falleció el 6 de agosto de 1936. El era el delegado gubernativo (Gobernador) de Gran Canaria, en aquella época las islas eran colonias, y el gobernador era un delegado enviado ó nombrado por el gobierno central de Madrid; miembro y presidente del PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español, el partido político más viejo de España), que es el partido que fue elegido y está en el gobierno de España actualmente, con su primer ministro José Luís Zapatero. El sacrificó su vida y murió defendiendo los derechos de los obreros, campesinos y trabajadores, así como la democracia de la isla y España; en contra del fascismo, y nazi sismo de Franco, Hitler y Mussollini que avasallaron la democracia en España y el mundo por muchos años; después de una guerra civil en España que duró 2 años y dejó 1 millón de muertos. Los hechos que ocurrieron fueron los siguientes: El general Francisco Franco estaba destinado y a cargo de las tropas de Canarias y el norte de África, incluyendo la legión extranjera española. El y otros generales prepararon un golpe de estado para derrumbar al gobierno de la república española elegido por el sufragio popular. El golpe de estado empezó en Gran Canaria, julio 1936 y terminó en la guerra civil española. Su esposo, Fernando, gobernador de Gran Canaria organizó la resistencia contra las tropas fascistas contando solamente con el apoyo de los campesinos y obreros armados con escopetas y demás, contra un ejército preparado y organizado! Después de varias escaramuzas, y debido a la superioridad del ejército, él dio la orden de dispersarse y abandonar la resistencia. Junto con un diputado y su esposa, Herminia, fueron detenidos por los fascistas y después de un juicio militar sumarísimo fueron condenados a muerte por fusilamiento. Una de las primeras victimas de la guerra civil española. Lo insólito del caso es que lo acusaron de traición militar, cuando él representaba al gobierno central elegido por voto popular, y fueron los fascistas los que traicionaron y se rebelaron contra el gobierno! Herminia también fue condenada a muerte, pero por el hecho de que estaba embarazada, la pena se redujo a cadena perpetúa, y finalmente a 4 años de prisión. Su hijo el Dr. Fernando M. Egea, nació y vivió hasta los 2 años de edad en la prisión, sin haber cometido ningún crimen!, sólo por ser el hijo de ellos. Finalmente, el gobierno dictatorial y fascista de Franco los dejó emigrar a la Argentina, terminando años de represión y persecución policíaca. Luego, cuando su hijo vino a Estados Unidos, ella se mudó a este país donde residió hasta su muerte. Herminia siempre quiso ser cremada y que la enterraran con su querido esposo en el nicho familiar en Gran Canaria. En Canarias se está preparando una marcha póstuma de unas 2 a 3,000 personas, miembros del PSOE y representantes del gobierno español, que acudirán a su entierro para rendirle su último homenaje. Su urna llegará a Canarias a principio de septiembre. Todos nosotros, su familia, estamos muy orgulloso de haber tenido una madre y abuela del calibre de ella, que perdió todo en la guerra civil española, pero su fe en la vida, su esperanza en el futuro, y sus convicciones la mantuvieron viva y con esperanza todo este tiempo. Ella dedicó toda su vida a criar a su hijo único, sobreviviendo todas las vicisitudes de una madre soltera. Todos nosotros le deseamos, que después de esta larga jornada, descanse en paz al lado de su querido esposo.

erminia Egea (a.k.a., Herminia dos Santos Aleman Vd. de Egea), 94, died June 30. She was born Dec. 4, 1914, in Guia, Canary Islands. She was married to Fernando Egea Ramirez, who was the elected governor delegate to the island of Gran Canaria. He was a member of the Spanish Socialist Worker’s Party (PSOE), the oldest political party in Spain, the current ruling party of Spain, headed by Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero. Her husband defended workers, the poor, freedom and democracy and gave his life defending them against the fascism of Spain, Germany and Italy. When Gen. Francisco Franco revolted in 1936 against Spain’s democratic government in Grand Canaria, where he was the delegated governor, her husband raised a group of peasants to fight the Franco-led military revolt. The military coup developed into the two-year Spanish Civil War. The revolt against Franco was unsuccessful. Egea’s husband was apprehended and assassinated Aug. 6, 1936, by a firing squad. His death is commemorated on the island and a square, street and building are named after him. Egea was sentenced to life in prison for being married to Fernando Egea Ramirez, but her sentence was reduced to four years because she was pregnant. Their son was born in prison and spent his first two years of life there. In 1950, after a life of police persecution and restrictions, Franco’s fascist government allowed her and her son to immigrate to Argentina. In 1967, she followed her son to the United States and resided in this country the rest of her life. Survivors include her son, Fernando M. Egea, M.D.; grandchildren, Fernando M. Egea Jr. of Chicago (husband of Susan and father of Nicolas), and Marcela Egea of Overland Park, Kan.; and great-grandchildren Hagen Draper-Egea and Catalina Ruble-Egea; Luis F. Egea of Leawood, Kan.; Gabrielle C. Egea of Honolulu; Christine Martin-Egea; and Marcelina Egea. Egea wanted to be cremated and buried next to her husband in the family plot in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. A large PSOE memorial ceremony is scheduled to occur in Las Palmas of Gran Canaria as part of the last respects paid to her during her funeral and burial. The following is a message from her surviving family: “We, all her family, are very proud to have (had) such a mother and grandmother that lost everything during the Spanish Civil War, but (maintained) her faith in life and her dedication to raising her only son, her family, (to) overcoming many bad moments of great sacrifice in accomplishing this mission (of) being a single mother. We all wish her to rest in peace next to her husband.”

Commentary by Veronica a vida es como un juego de video. Todos tenemos que pasar por un sinfín de obstáculos y retos para llegar hasta el siguiente nivel. Progresivamente, se va haciendo más difícil y frustrante, pero seguimos hasta que pasamos cada nivel y en última instancia llegamos al final. Eso es por lo que todos y cada uno de nosotros e s t a m o s trabajando para alcanzar: el final del juego o nuestras grandes metas. Sin embargo, tenemos que realizar esos pasos y trabajar duro para alcanzar ese punto. Comenzamos en el nivel 1: los años de bebés. Nos alimentan, nos aprietan las mejillas, nos cargan, nos hablan y juegan con nosotros. Luego, está el período de la niñez, cuando la vida parece muy sencilla. Esos son los días cuando nuestras principales preocupaciones son el recreo, los lápices de colores y las caricaturas. Y después, casi demasiado pronto, llega la tan esperada adolescencia que cada niño (y padre) anticipa. Bueno, quizá no. Pero sin importar cuán malo parezca, no todo el tiempo es así. Si bien el ser adolescente implica llevar a cuestas alguna carga no tan agradable, también trae consigo nuevas responsabilidades, la deliciosa primera probadita de la libertad que tanto ansiamos y cabe mencionar las otras incontables “primeras” cosas que nos suceden: el novio o novia, el beso, la experiencia de estar enamorado, el carro, el teléfono celular, el trabajo, etc. Todo eso conforma la persona en la que nos convertiremos. Las cosas que pasan durante los años de la adolescencia son importantes. Ya sean buenas o malas, éstas nos ayudarán a crecer como un ser humano más fuerte y más seguro de sí mismo. Lo que nos depara el futuro a nosotros—los adolescentes—es un misterio. Simplemente tenemos que hacer el recorrido y ver que sucede. Para todas las chicas y chicos, bromistas, porristas, ratones de biblioteca y cualquier otra cosa que pudieran ser, aunque quizá no terminemos en el mismo lugar después llegar a los adultos en que esperamos convertirnos, por ahora, todos nosotros estamos juntos en el mismo lugar. Y así tan diferentes como podríamos ser, todos somos adolescentes. No vayamos por este viaje solos cuando podemos hacerlo juntos.

That’s what each and every one of us is trying to work toward: the end of the game or our big goals. H o w e v e r, we’ve got to make those steps and work hard to reach that point. We start off at Level 1: the baby years. We get fed, our cheeks pinched, carried around, talked to and played with. Then, there’s the stretch of childhood, when life seems simplest. Those are the days when our main concerns are recess, crayons and cartoons. Almost too soon after are those longawaited teen years that every child (and parent) anticipates. Well, maybe not. For children and parents, the teen years are some of the most difficult before adulthood. There are the mood swings, angst, arguments and so much more. But as bad as it might seem, it isn’t bad all the time. While being a teen-ager involves carrying some not-so-enjoyable baggage, it also brings new responsibilities and that delicious first taste of freedom, not to mention the countless other “firsts” that occur: That first boyfriend or girlfriend, kiss, experience with love, car, cell phone, job, etc. All of those shape us into the person we’ll become. The things that happen during the teen years are important. Whether they’re good or bad, they will help you grow into a stronger, more confident human being. What’s in store for us teens for the future is a mystery. We’ve all just got to go for the ride and see what happens. To all the girls, guys, jocks, cheerleaders, bookworms and whatever else you might be, though we may not end up in the same place after we grow into the adults we’re waiting to become, for now, we’re all together in the same place. As unalike as we all might be, we’re all teen-agers. Let’s not go through this journey alone when we can go through it together.

ne topic that we’ll address in this teen section of Dos Mundos is “The Secret Life of the American Teen-ager,” a new popular TV series featured on ABC that recently made its second season available on DVD. Specifically, we want to look at it from two viewpoints: one from a teen (Veronica) and one from a parent of teens (Liza). The show focuses on Amy, a high school freshman, band geek and 15year-old who unexpectedly becomes pregnant after a one-night stand at band camp. It shows the reality of being a teen and the hardships that any teen could easily face after making a decision, good or bad, voluntary or involuntary. For example, along with the hardships of being a pregnant teen, Amy has the challenges that come with relationships and must face her loss of a normal teen life. The teen’s point of view All the life lessons the series offers give teens something to take into perspective. It might get some teens to think twice about making certain choices, such as those the show’s characters have made. Parents might think that “The Secret Life” gives their teenage children ideas about having sex or relationships – and more than likely, it does. However, this show also gives teens a real look at the consequences of having sex and being in relationships by showing the specific issues some teens have to address. The series has everything a teen could want: a good story, a good sense of morality and juicy teen drama, something you can never get enough of. The parent’s point of view The series is a good way to address the challenges that teens face today, without giving a lecture. As parents, we can’t close our eyes and pretend our children are good and live in a bubble where there are no relationships, sex, peer pressure, unwanted pregnancies or other problems. The difference with other series – where they show all the delusions of youth (alcohol, sex, drugs, etc.) as “cool” trendy activities that will give them status among their peers and as problems that can easily be solved – is that, with this one, they show teens the real consequences they’ll face. It doesn’t matter if they do something premeditated or it just happened; the fact is, every act has a consequence and we must think twice about doing certain things and be prepared to handle what might happen. It’s better to be alert and have open communication with our children, so we don’t regret it later. Life has many shades of gray; and someone who might seem “good and naïve” can fall and end up with big troubles, while a seemingly “bad” person can actually be someone who really thinks and takes responsibility for his or her life.

D e b e r í a s sentirte culpable si intencionalmente haces algo mal, pero cuando alguien te pide un favor y no puedes realizarlo porque no tienes tiempo, dinero, o ganas, no hay razón para sentirte así, pues no has hecho ningún daño. Recuerda que tú eres la persona más importante en tu vida y no debes sentirte mal por poner tus necesidades en primer lugar. Cuando quieras decir “no”, y no te atrevas, sigue estos pasos: 1) Gana tiempo: En vez de decir no inmediatamente, utiliza estas palabras: “Dame tiempo para pensarlo”, “no estoy lista para tomar una decisión ahora”. “Te dejo saber luego”. Respuestas como éstas te dan tiempo para tomar una decisión beneficiosa para ti. Además, al tú no dar una contestación rápida, la otra persona se verá obligada a buscar otra “víctima”, 2) Cambia el enfoque hacia ti: Cuando digas no, explica que tu decisión está basada en una circunstancia personal que te lo prohíbe. Puedes decir: “Me encantaría complacerte pero mi situación no me lo permite”. 3) Crea “reglas”: Es decir, si alguien te pide un favor para el domingo, dile: “Lo siento pero en nuestro hogar tenemos una “regla” que este día es para compartirlo en familia”. Y si estás presionada por un vendedor, indícale: “Mi esposo y yo tenemos una “regla” de no tomar decisiones hasta que ambos lo hayamos hablado”. 4) Evita dar largas explicaciones o excusas- Si explicas en detalles, te pones en una posición vulnerable porque la otra persona puede tratar de buscarle solución a tu problema para que le puedas ayudar. Or perhaps someone asked you for a loan, and you didn’t know how to say, “I can’t.” We’re constantly facing situations where we feel compelled to say, “Yes,” when we really want to say, “I don’t want to!” Why do we feel so obligated to please people? Basically, we’re terrified that they’ll think we’re “bad” and won’t like us anymore. We’re tortured by feelings of guilt. You should feel guilty if you do something bad on purpose. But when someone asks you for a favor and you can’t do it because you don’t have the time, money or desire, don’t feel guilty. You’ve done nothing wrong. Remember you are the most important person in your life and shouldn’t feel bad about putting your needs first. When you want to say, “No,” but just don’t dare, follow these steps: 1) Buy some time: Instead of declining right away, say: “Give me some time to think about it,” “I’m not ready to make a decision right now” or “I’ll let you know later.” Such responses give you time to make the right decision for yourself. And by not answering right away, the other person will have to start looking around for another “victim.” 2) Change the focus to you: When you say, “No,” explain that your decision is based on a personal circumstance that makes it impossible to say, “Yes.” You could say: “I’d love to help out, but because of the situation I’m in right now, it’s just not possible.” 3) Create “rules”: If someone askes you for a favor on a Sunday, say: “I’m sorry, but in our home we have a ‘rule’ that Sunday is just for spending time with family.” If a salesperson is pressuring you, you can respond, “My husband and I have a ‘rule’ that we don’t make any purchases without consulting each other first.” 4) Don’t give long explanations or excuses: If you explain in detail, you’re making yourself vulnerable, because the other person could try to come up with a solution to your problem so you can help them. Pleasing others should be a pleasure, not an obligation. When you say, “Yes,” do it because it makes you feel good!

ara muchos, el fútbol ha sido el deporte rey y un cúmulo de recuerdos de cuando eran jóvenes y jugabas hasta 3 partidos al día, cascareando con amigos, logrando objetivos y obteniendo nuevos retos. Los recuerdos de aquellos tiempos y grandes momentos reunieron a un grupo de amigos que— mientras comían una hamburguesa—decidieron formar “Paken Flakes”, un equipo con reglas y con la única intención de divertirse y convivir, sin olvidar la mentalidad ganadora. Para formar parte del equipo se necesita pesar al menos 200 libras, formar parte del grupo social y lo más importante: conocer el famoso quiebre de panza—una especie de jugada donde el jugador se mueve hacia un lado con el balón y la panza hacia el lado contrario. La decisión fue jugar fútbol rápido los lunes por la noche en el torneo organizado por All American Indoor Sports, donde mucha gente de diferentes edades disfruta del fútbol de salón todos los días del año. A pesar de las expectativas, el equipo logró ganar su primer torneo, se fue invicto y avanzó a su segunda temporada donde logró el bicampeonato. El pasado

Otros son jóvenes talentosos, todas unas promesas del fútbol, pero que en vez de estar afuera corriendo y haciendo ejercicio optan por jugar video juegos. En fin, sin importar cuál es su pretexto para tener unas libritas de más, Paken Flakes es el lugar indicado para intentar perderlas, con una pasión deportiva y en compañía de buenos amigos.

l “Night Kicks” que se llevará a cabo por segundo año consecutivo contará con la participación de varios equipos de diversas ligas, como la del Padrino. La mayoría de los conjuntos se reforzó, ya que se espera un nivel mucho más alto que el año pasado, cuando Honduras venció a Real de Oro en penales, en una final que fue transmitida por Metro Sports. El torneo cuenta con un total de 24 conjuntos divididos en 6 grupos. Cada equipo se enfrentará a los 3 rivales de

su grupo y calificarán los dos primeros lugares de cada grupo, además de los 2 mejores terceros lugares. De los 24 equipos, 8 participan en la liga del Padrino: Real de Oro (actual subcampeón), Paletería Chihuahua, Hamburguesas Los Compas, Asociado Rentería, Inter Tarjetas el Güero, Galáctico de Veracruz, Barilleros y Atrevidos--quienes llevarán el nombre de Carnicería el Torito. season has been about waiting for his chance to play – and being ready when that happens. After playing in 21 games in each of his first two seasons with the Wizards, the Costa Rican native has played in only one MLS game this season as of Tuesday (July 7). He also played briefly during the Wizards’ recent 1-1 tie with the New England Revolution in SuperLiga play and started for the Wizards during their win over the Minnesota Wild in the U.S. Open Cup June 30 in Blaine, Minn. Morsink suggested during a June 19 interview at the Wizards’ training facility in Swope Park that Kansas City’s upcoming schedule would give him plenty of chances to play. With the combination of tournament and MLS games over the next few weeks, “minutes are going to be

up for everyone,” he said. “We’ve got 24 guys on our roster who are very capable of coming and performing, so we’re going to need our full roster,” Morsink commented. “And that’s why guys that usually don’t get the playing time that they want – or they would like to see – this is the time for them to shine.” Morsink understands that, when he gets the chance “to shine” again, he must capitalize on it. “Soccer’s day-to-day, week-to-week – and it’s crazy, because you can be a five-time allstar (and) if you’re not performing, you’re not going to play,” he said. There are rumors that Morsink might get a chance to shine for the Costa Rican men’s national team, which leads the CONCACAF standings for qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Whether that happens, however, is up to coach Rodridgo Kenton, Morsink said. “Obviously, I’d love to get the call,” said Morsink, who lived for 15 years in Costa Rica. “It’s been a dream of mine and (would be) an honor to represent Costa Rica…. If the call comes, I’m going to go, but that’s not my decision.”
