n July 27, a group of immigrants started a hunger strike in a Basile, La., prison to protest a perceived lack of medical attention, non-existent phone contact with lawyers and family, lack of information about immigration matters (including deportation) and lack of cleaning and hygiene.

According to a report from New America Media, at least six inmates remain in solitary confinement because of the hunger strike. The report also covered cases involving specific detainees, Manuchar Khalhaturov, who claimed he was denied a kosher diet; Fausto Gonzalez, who expressed concerns about being sent to “the hole” for planning a hunger strike; and another detainee who allegedly got sick from the food.

Those raising complaints have indicated the prison has committed several violations that could be punishable by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Some groups have already sent a letter to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano stressing the importance of an investigation into the prison.

issouri has established this weekend (Aug. 7-9) as the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday.

During the weekend, the 4.225 percent state sales tax won’t be applied when shoppers buy clothing that’s less than $100, school supplies used in a standard classroom (not exceeding $50 per purchase), computers or peripheral devices not exceeding $3,500 and computer software not exceeding $350.

Many Kansas City area adults will shop for supplies for school-age kids this weekend. Missouri’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday starts Friday (Aug. 7) and runs through 11:59 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 9). The event waives the state’s 4.25 percent sales tax on purchases of clothing priced less than $100, school supplies up to $50, computer software priced less than $350 and personal computers up to $3,500.

The relaxed days of summer vacation are numbered. Across the area – on both sides of the state line – school districts are gearing up to open the 2009-10 school year, some as soon as Aug. 13.

Parents are carrying out one of their weightiest obligations: preparing their kids for a new school year. How parents handle it will largely determine their children’s attitudes toward school and academic performance.

The National Association of School Psychologists offers tips for helping kids shift successfully from unstructured summer vacation to a regimented school schedule. They include buying school supplies early to inspire and enthuse, re-establishing regular bedtime and meal times and turning off the television in favor of playing quiet games and puzzles. Other tips include using flash cards and reading to ease kids into learning, designating and clearing a quiet place to do homework and assigning a specific spot in the house for school belongings.

College students head back to campuses during August, too. It’s important for them to take their education as seriously as their parents, who sacrifice to ensure their access to post-secondary education and the wealth of opportunities it offers.

The Core Institute at Southern Illinois University is an organization that surveys college students’ drinking practices. It’s reporting distressing findings. Despite that the federal government has spent more than $60 million on college drinking prevention programs since 1991, the number of students who binge drink – 44 percent of college students surveyed – hasn’t changed.

Moreover, 159,000 first-year college students annually drop out for alcohol-or-other-drug-related reasons. Nearly a third of college students admit to having missed at least one class because of alcohol or drug use. And one night of heavy drinking can impair abstract thinking for up to 30 days. Drunk driving among college students and alcohol-related deaths also are increasing.

Many colleges and universities are taking a new approach this year to curb harmful drinking.

Some are requiring new students to pass an online course on the dangers and effects of alcohol abuse.

Others are stepping up educational campaigns on the harmful physiological effects of heavy drinking, launching intervention programs or banning alcohol on campus.

Not all college students drink alcohol or abuse it. They’re smart. They know that college offers so much, in addition to academics. It’s an opportunity to learn how to prioritize and manage time, form lifelong friendships, build a valuable career network and practice getting along with all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds.

Editor’s note: Six area municipalities aren’t participating in the tax-free weekend. The Missouri sales tax on clothing, school supplies, computer software and computers will still be collected in North Kansas City, Oak Grove, Platte City, Platte Woods, Smithville and Sugar Creek. Kansas doesn’t have a sales tax holiday.

“En mi opinión personal – y esto no tiene nada que ver con la de la administración – es que es más inteligente si la sacan (de la consideración) porque hay algunos políticos que claramente apoyan la ley DREAM, pero no apoyan (propuestas para la reforma migratoria. Esa es mi opinión”, concluyó.

Latinos comprise the fastest-growing majority group in the United States. According to various population statistics, between 25 and 35 percent of children ages 0-5 are Latino. However, the Latino community has is the highest high school dropout rate.

“We want to know how we should place the money in the community, and we want to hear from the community,” Sepulveda said.

Issues the community raised included the lack of recruiting of Latino educators and lack of financial support for Latino students for legal reasons.

Bernardo Ramirez, executive director for the Hispanic Economic Development Corp., expressed concerns regarding the initiative.

“I don’t want it just to be an initiative,” Ramirez said. “I want it to be a real program.”

Questioned about the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, Sepulveda answered: “It (approval) won’t happen this year because there’s too much going on, and one of the key challenges is if the DREAM Act should be part of an immigration reform or (if it) should be separated out. (And) so, that decision hasn’t been made by the people that have to deal with it.”

Sepulveda believes the immigration reform debate and DREAM Act will be addressed in 2010.

“In my personal opinion – and this has nothing to do with the administration [opinion] – is that it is smarter if they pull it out (of consideration) because there are some politicians that clearly support the DREAM Act, but don’t support the (proposals for) immigration reform,” he said.

Aceites para cocinar

Existen varias formas de cocinar la comida en casa y desde la llegada del microondas, cada vez menos personas están usando hornos tradicionales y sartenes.

El microondas posee varias desventajas, comparado con los métodos tradicionales, ya que emite radiación que literalmente destruye todos los nutrientes en la comida.

Además, la comida congelada lista para microondas generalmente es altísima en sal ya que también se destruye el sabor de la comida. Es por eso que me gustaría hablar de diferentes aceites de cocina a aquellos interesados en quitar el polvo al horno y la sartén.

Como la mayoría sabe, el mejor aceite es el de olivo, preferentemente extra virgen. Desafortunadamente lo que la mayoría no sabe, es que este aceite es muy sensitivo al calor y pierde sus propiedades nutritivas cuando se usa a temperaturas muy altas (como para freír). Para sacarle provecho, se recomienda crudo en ensaladas o platos horneados a temperaturas bajas.

A la hora de freír, el aceite más recomendable es el de semilla de uva que no sólo es más barato, sino que aguanta temperaturas muy altas sin perder su valor nutricional. Éste es menos conocido, pero ha existido por siglos y estudios han demostrado que no causa ningún problemas de salud.

El siguiente aceite que voy a mencionar ¡es mi peor enemigo! Y es el de Canola. ¿Por qué? Porque ha sido demostrado que todos los “beneficios” que menciona la etiqueta son verdad solamente cuando está crudo y fresco; pero una vez calentado se convierte en veneno mantecoso que queda atrapado en las arterias y que además de aumentar el colesterol malo, baja el bueno.

Esto es realmente verdad par la mayoría de los aceites vegetales. La ciencia ha descubierto que la grasa saturada (animal) no es tan mala para su salud como la grasa trans-saturada vegetal.

El aceite vegetal (ya sea de maíz, girasol, etc.) se introdujo en los años 50s cuando menos del 15% de la población sufría de colesterol, alta presión, infartos, etc.

Y en ese entonces la mayoría de la gente usaba manteca de puerco para cocinar.

Desde entonces hasta ahora, el asesino número uno de este país se han convertido los infartos y las embolias, a pesar de que la gente ha pasado de mantequilla a margarina y de manteca a aceites vegetales. Esto me lleva a entender que las grasa saturada, mientras sea consumida en pequeñas cantidades, es realmente mejor que los productos de imitación como Crisco.

Pero antes de ir corriendo al mercado a comprar manteca, tenga en mente que la mayoría de las tiendas solamente venden manteca procesada, que tiene la desventaja de tener grasa saturada.

La solución: Opta siempre por lo natural. Y si no puede encontrar manteca real, ¡grandioso!. Pero recuerde, el aceite de olivo extra virgen y el de semilla de uva son también unas opciones buenas.

There are several ways of preparing food at home; and since the arrival of the microwave oven, fewer people are using their traditional ovens, slow cookers and pans. The microwave has several disadvantages when compared to the other traditional ways of cooking because the radiation it emits literally destroys all the nutrients in the food. This is why microwave food is unsatisfying.

Additionally, microwave ready food is generally high in sodium (salt) because flavors also are destroyed by microwave radiation. This is why I would like to discuss the different cooking oils available to those individuals who are interested in taking the dust off their pots and pans and putting them to good use.

As most people know, the best oil – as far as nutritional value goes – is olive oil, preferably extra virgin olive oil. Unfortunately, what most people don’t know is that olive oil is sensitive to heat and loses its nutritional properties when it’s used for cooking at high temperatures, such as frying. To really take advantage of using olive oil, it’s recommended it be used raw as a salad dressing or for dishes that will be baked at low temperatures.

When it comes to cooking at high temperatures, the best oil is grape seed oil, which is not only cheaper, but also holds its beneficial properties at higher temperatures than other oils. Grape seed is relatively new for most people, but has existed for centuries. Studies show it doesn’t cause any known health issues.

The next oil I will discuss is my worst enemy! That’s canola oil. Why? Because recent studies have proved that the “benefits” listed on its label are only true so long as the oil is fresh and raw. Once canola oil is heated, it turns into trans saturated fat, which clogs arteries and increases bad cholesterol while lowering good cholesterol.

This is actually true for most vegetable oils. Science has discovered saturated fat (animal) is not as bad for your health as trans saturated fat (vegetable).

Vegetable oils such as corn, safflower and Crisco were introduced during the 1950s, when less that 15 percent of the U.S. population suffered from health problems, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and strokes. Back then, people used mostly butter and lard to cook.

From then until now, cardiovascular disease has become the top cause of premature death in the United States, followed by diabetes. This leads me to believe that saturated fat, so long as it’s consumed in small amounts, is actually better than imitation products, such as Crisco.

But before running to the store to buy lard, keep in mind that most grocery stores only carry processed lard, which has the disadvantage of having saturated and trans saturated fats. The solution: Always choose what is unprocessed and natural. If you can find real lard, then great! But remember, extra virgin olive oil and grape seed oil are good choices, too.

Nacida como la quinta de seis hijos en Pharr, Texas, a tan sólo 6 millas de la frontera mexicana, Aída aprendió temprano sobre reciclar, reutilizar y dar un nuevo propósito de sus padres, quienes eran ingeniosos y reparaban o hacían la mayoría de lo que necesitaban. Su padre era conductor de camiones y trabajaba por temporadas en Texas y Nebraska hasta que se volvió discapacitado. Él fabricó las mesas de los niños con pedazos de madera y utilizó cubos metálicos de manteca para bancas y le enseño a Acosta a utilizar en forma segura herramientas eléctricas a la edad de 13 años. Él también reparó lavadoras y fabricó asadores a partir de tambores de aceite.

Su madre fue una costurera y elaboró la ropa de la familia.

Cuando la ropa estaba muy gastada, la convertía en cobijas y mantas y en rulos para el pelo. Su papá cortaba las latas de café y su mamá las envolvía con trapos.

Su madre también cortaba libros para colorear terminados en diseños y hacía todos sus patrones a partir de periódicos y bolsas de comestibles. Además, envasaba y cocinaba para estirar su presupuesto tanto como pudiera, y aún así era generosa con los que tenían menos.

Todos en la familia le quitaban las semillas al algodón crudo para rellenar almohadas. Y también les gustaba asistir a las ventas de garaje y a los mercados de pulgas. La familia, que laboraba los veranos como trabajadores agrícolas en Colorado, coleccionaban artículos cuando estaban fuera del estado y los transportaban de regreso para venderlos en los mercados de pulgas de Texas cuando regresaban.

Adicionalmente, visitaban semanalmente los deshuesaderos pare recoger partes de bicicletas y otros materiales. Los hermanos Acosta ensamblaban y pintaban las bicicletas para que parecieran nuevas. Los chicos las montaban o caminaban a casa, dependiendo de cuántas se vendían en el mercado de pulgas.

En 1991, Aída se mudó a Overland Park, Kan. Ella ha estado casada por 16 años con Joe Acosta—un trabajador postal de EE.UU.—y tienen 3 hijos, Zenaida, de 26, Cristina, de 15 y Joseph, de 10 años; además de 2 nietos Patrick, de 7 y Esparanza, de 5.

Aída está activa en la comunidad. Ha estado involucrada con las Niñas Exploradores y es miembro activo de PTA. También trabaja con “Chat and Chew”, un programa de lectura de la Escuela Primaria de Shawnee Mission (Kan.)

Born the fifth child of six in Pharr, Texas, just 6 miles from the Mexican border, Acosta learned early about recycling, reusing and repurposing from her parents, who were resourceful and repaired or made most of what they needed. Her father was a truck driver and worked seasonally in Texas and Nebraska until he became disabled. He made the kids tables from scrap wood and used metal shortening buckets for benches and taught Acosta to safely use power tools by age 13. He also repaired washers and made barbeque pits out of oil drums.

Acosta’s mother was a seamstress and made the family’s clothes. When the clothes were too worn, she turned them into quilts and blankets and hair rollers.

Her dad would cut up coffee cans and her mom would wrap them with rags.

Acosta’s mother also would cut up finished coloring books to appliqué designs and made all her patterns out of newspapers and grocery sacks. In addition, her mother canned and cooked to stretch her budget as far as she could, yet was generous to those with less.

Everyone in the family would deseed raw cotton for pillow stuffing. The family also loved to attend garage sales and flea markets. The family, which worked summers as agricultural workers in Colorado, would collect items when they were out of state and haul it back and sell it at Texas flea markets when they returned.

In addition, the family visited junkyards weekly to gather bike parts and other raw materials. Acosta’s brothers and sisters assembled and painted the bikes to look new. The kids would ride or walk home, depending on how many were sold at the flea market.

In 1991, Acosta moved to Overland Park, Kan. She has been married 16 years to Joe Acosta, a U.S. postal worker. They have three children, Zenaida, 26, Cristina, 15, and Joseph, 10 ; plus two grandchildren, Patrick, 7, and Esparanza, 5.

Acosta is active in the community. She has been involved with the Girl Scouts and is an active PTA member. She also works with “Chat and Chew,” a reading program with Shawnee Mission (Kan.)

In addition, Acosta and her family decorate and sell items during First Fridays at Urban Mining Homewares (UMH), a vintage market of reused and repurposed items for home use. Her husband helps with the heavy stuff. Her daughter Zenaida creates incense burners made from recycled bottles and earrings from bottle caps. Cristina Acosta collects vintage jewelry and helps set up the displays. Zenaida and Cristina often help with selling, too. Joseph works on welding skills he learned in school for future projects.

When it’s UMH week, Acosta doesn’t babysit or do school activities, she said.

The family got involved with UMH when Aida and Joe went to an auction house in the CrossRoads District and befriended one of the owners who became a “miner” at UMH. He invited Aida to help him when he was out of town. Gradually, she became more involved with her new business venture. In 2007, she became a miner.

The Acostas love visiting garage sales. They enjoy them so much, in fact, that they stopped at one en route to Cristina’s baptism and to Zenaida’s quinceanera (quinceañera in Spanish).

Although Acosta and her family are serious about recycling, reusing and repurposing, that doesn’t mean they’re serious all the time. It’s important to live green, but just as important to have fun, especially with one’s family, Acosta said.

l Pulgarcito ofrece comida salvadoreña tradicional. Pero en su esfuerzo por ser fresco e innovador, el restaurante de Merriam, Kan. ha lanzado un menú nuevo y designado a Rosa Cardoza como su nueva chef.

“Yo estoy intentando cosas nuevas y trabajando en cambios personales para nuestro menú”, comentó Rosa.

Ella es una salvadoreña de nacimiento que se crió en la cocina. Su madre trabajó en un restaurante en El Salvador; y finalmente Rosa ingresó al negocio de la cocina.

“Es algo que traigo en la sangre”, dijo.

Rosa, quien ha trabajado en diferentes restaurantes estadounidenses, cocinando diferentes tipos de comida, admite que aprendió cómo cocinar en la cocina practicando y observando.

“Cocinar es realmente fácil para mí porque lo disfruto”, refirió. “Me encanta cocinar y aprendo muy rápido”.

Ahora, como nueva chef del Pulgarcito, ella podrá seguir ese amor cocinando varios platillos salvadoreños. El Pulgarcito ofrece especiales los fines de semana y una variedad de comida cada día.

“Vengan y disfruten la comida. Les prometo que no lamentarán venir aquí, porque el sabor es excelente”, indicó.

Para Rosa y el resto del personal, sus metas son seguir progresando y continuar trabajando duro para lo clientes, quienes provienen de diferentes razas y clases. “[Yo] pienso que hemos realizado un trabajo realmente bueno para satisfacer a nuestros clientes americanos y latinos. Recibimos gente de direfentes razas”, concluyó.

El Pulgarcito está ubicado en 5921 Merriam Drive en Merriam, Kan. y está abierto de lunes a domingo de 9 a.m. a 10 p.m.

l Pulgarcito offers traditional Salvadoran food. But in its efforts to be fresh and innovative, the Merriam, Kan., restaurant has launched a new menu and appointed Rosa Cardoza as its new chef.

“I am trying new things and working on personal changes for our menu,” Cardoza said.

Cardoza is a Salvadoran native who has been raised in the kitchen. Her mother worked in El Salvador in a restaurant.

Eventually, Cardoza joined the kitchen business.

“It is something that I have in my blood,” Cardoza said.

Cardoza, who has worked in different U.S. restaurants, cooking different kinds of food, admits that she learned how to cook in the kitchen by practicing and watching.

“Cooking is really easy for me because I enjoy it,” she said.

“I love cooking, and I learn really fast.”

Now, as El Pulgarcito’s new chef, Cardoza will get to pursue that love by cooking various Salvadoran dishes. El Pulgarcito offers specials on the weekends, a variety of food every day.

“Come and enjoy the food,” Cardoza said. “I promise (that) you won’t regret (coming here) because the flavor is excellent.”

For Cardoza and the rest of the staff, their goals are to keep moving forward and continue working hard for the customers, who are from different races and backgrounds.

“I think we have done a really good job (of) satisfying our American and our Latino costumers,” she said. “We get people from different races.”

El Pulgarcito is open from 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Sunday at 5921 Merriam Drive in Merriam, Kan.

Facundo Cabral: “Peace is on a higher plain than happiness” Facundo Cabral: “la paz es un estado más alto que la felicidad”

L

a música del cantautor argentino, Facundo Cabral, era como cinta sonora de mi adolescencia en la Ciudad de México. Se lo conté antes de entrevistarlo recientemente en Miami.

Recordaba, en particular, su canción “No soy de aquí ni soy de allá”, cuando le pregunté: “¿De dónde eres?”

“De ningún lado. Nunca fui de ningún lado”, me contestó este artista nacido en 1937.

Como en todo lo relacionado con Cabral, había una historia detrás de la respuesta.

“Mi padre se fue antes que yo naciera y se quedó sola mi madre con siete hijos”, contó. Se quedaron sin dinero y los echaron de la casa donde vivían. Viajaron, como pudieron, desde La Plata hasta Tierra del Fuego. En ese terrible viaje murieron cuatro hermanos. Llegaron, por fin, cuando Cabral tiene 9 años y un deseo.

“Yo tenía un solo sueño; ver feliz a mi madre. Ella, no yo. Yo siempre sentí que no pertenecía a ninguna parte, una cosa muy curiosa”.

Dígame si hay algún mecanismo para usarse en este caso para ver si ella puede conseguir su visa de paseo y compartir con sus hijos.

he music of Argentinean singer-songwriter FacunT do Cabral was the soundtrack of my adolescence in Mexico City. I told him this before interviewing him

recently in Miami.

I especially remember his song “No soy de aqui ni soy de alla” (“I’m not from here, nor from there”). So my first question was, naturally, “Where are you from?”

“From nowhere. I was never from anywhere,” this artist, born in 1937, said.

As with everything related to Cabral, there was a story behind the answer.

“My father went away before I was born and my mother was left alone, with seven children,” he explained.

They were left penniless and were evicted from their house. They traveled, by any means possible, from La Plata to Tierra del Fuego. On that terrible trek, four of his brothers died. The bereft family finally arrived when Cabral was 9 and had one wish.

“I only had one dream: to see my mother happy,” he said. “Her, not me. I never felt I belonged anywhere.

It’s very weird.”

Aires a buscar a Eva Perón. Se tarda cuatro meses en la travesía pero, sorprendentemente, la encuentra.

Se acerca a su auto y lo único que se atreve a preguntarle a la esposa del presidente de la nación es: “¿Hay trabajo?

Y ella dice: ‘Por fin alguien que pide trabajo y no limosna’”.

Cabral consigue un empleo al sur de la provincia de Buenos Aires y luego estuvo “muy perdido hasta los 14”.

A esa edad, cuenta, un jesuita le enseña a leer. Y pronto ya estaba aventurándose con las obras del filósofo griego Heráclito y del autor escocés Robert Louis Stevenson.

Empieza a escribir y a tocar guitarra. Un buen día lo escucha el actor cómico-popular argentino Luís Sandrini; lo apoya y le da oficio.

Y con guitarra en mano, Cabral empieza un larguísimo viaje que ya lo ha llevado a 165 países y tras el cual todavía no ha encontrado su hogar. No tiene casa ni dirección. Sus libros se amontonan en un hotel de Buenos Aires. “¿De qué estás huyendo?”, le pregunté. “¿Por qué viajar tanto? ¿Por qué no quedarse en un lugar?”

“Eso dijo mi madre”, respondió. “Y si es una fuga es maravillosa. Es como si me fugara a Las Vegas o, si fuera niño, me fugara a Orlando. Yo siempre sospeché que el mundo era maravilloso por diverso. A mí no me gustan las cosas siempre iguales”.

Todavía recuerda la primera vez que viajó a Estados Unidos. “Ésta es la casa de Satanás”, pensó, “porque siempre pensamos eso los sudamericanos: Si me engripo, la culpa es de los gringos”.

Pero viaje tras viaje, fue cambiando su visión. Hoy es radicalmente opuesta.

“Estados Unidos, te guste o no te guste, es una Torre de Babel, es la capital del mundo”. “¿Eres un hombre de izquierda?”, le pregunté.

“No para nada, ni de derecha”, contestó. “Yo no creo en las ideologías. Las ideologías son una maldición”.

Le recordé que él tuvo una postura muy firme en contra de las dictaduras militares en Argentina. De hecho, no pudo regresar a Argentina hasta 1984.

“Ellos estaban contra mí”, dijo. No al revés, asegura.

“Hablas mucho de Jesús”, le comenté. “Y otra persona que también habla mucho de Jesús es (el presidente de Venezuela) Hugo Chávez”.

“Entonces hay dos Jesús en esta vida; a lo mejor hay dos”, dijo. “El de él no tiene mucho que ver con el mío. ¿Cómo puede ser que un solo hombre decida en un país?

Ni siquiera por elecciones. Mi madre diría que hay gente que para ir escapando del aburrimiento de su familia y de su vida llegan a la presidencia de su país. Me parece una frase perfecta en este caso”. “¿Por qué no haz ido a Cuba?” le pregunté. “¿A qué voy a ir (a Cuba)?” respondió. “¿A qué? Duraría cinco minutos en Cuba. No, yo soy casi anarquista; el gobierno de uno mismo. Jamás tuve una familia. De hecho me echaron de todos los países socialistas. Fui a Rusia, me echaron. Fui a la China de Mao Tse Tung y con mucha gracia me echaron”.

“Acabas de decir que no tienes familia pero tuviste una familia”, le señalé.

“Tuve una mujer y una hija, a la que conocí acá (en Estados Unidos)”, recordó. “Fíjate cuántas sorpresas tenía Dios para mí en Estados Unidos. La mujer que más amé, era de Chicago. Tenía 18 años cuando la conocí; yo tenía 40. Supe que era mi mujer, supo que era su hombre. Fuimos juntos cinco años por el mundo hasta China. Nos echaron juntos alguna vez de China. Y cuando ella tenía 23 y nuestra niña 1 año, mueren en un accidente de aviación”. “¿Cómo vives con eso?”, le pregunté. “Yo perdí a mi padre hace 13 años y todavía lo sigo arrastrando”.

“Yo tengo otras noticias”, me contestó detrás de sus lentes oscuros, buscando mis ojos. “Yo quedé agradecido a Dios por haber conocido el amor de mi mujer y el amor de mi hija. Lo que uno ama nunca muere. Mi mujer y mi hija están conmigo. Tu padre está contigo”.

Y luego del tema de la muerte hablamos del amor. Le pregunté si estaba enamorado. Y me sorprende, otra vez.

“Yo no me enamoro una sola vez”, me dijo, riendo. “Me enamoro a cada rato. El amor tiene que tener horario. Todo el día es un hastío. Y terminan odiándose y por eso los divorcios. Tendría que haber un horario. Te amo de 8 a 10.

Y luego me voy porque tengo que amar a María. Y ahora me voy al teatro porque tengo que amar al teatro”.

Y terminamos la conversación, como si estuviera escuchando una de sus canciones que me acompañaron de joven.

“Voy a decir una cosa”, advirtió. “Se supone que la meta es la felicidad. Pero no. Hay un paso más. Yo tomo una actitud: Me exigí ser feliz. Y nunca pensé que iba a contagiar la felicidad y que iba hacer feliz a tanta gente en el mundo. Ahí, la verdad, se me fue la mano”.

“Ahora estoy en paz”, reveló. “Es un estadio más alto que la felicidad”.

Shortly afterward, still a boy, Cabral went to Buenos Aires to seek Eva Peron. The trip took him four months, but surprisingly, he found her. He approached her car and asked the only thing he dared tell the wife of Argentina’s president: “Is there any work?”

And she said: “At last, someone who asks for work and not charity.”

Cabral got a job in the south of the Buenos Aires province and then he was “very lost until I was 14.”

At that age, he said, a Jesuit taught him to read.

Soon afterward, he was reading the works of Greek philosopher Heraclitus and Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. He started to write and play the guitar.

One bright day, Argentinean comic-actor Luis Sandrini heard him. He helped him and gave him work.

With guitar in hand, Cabral began a long trip that has taken him to 165 countries, but not to a place he can call home. His books are piling up in a hotel room in Buenos Aires.

“What are you running away from?” I asked him.

“Why do you travel so much? Why won’t you stay in one place?”

“That is just what my mother said,” he replied.

“And if it is an escape, it is wonderful. It’s as though I were running away to Las Vegas – or if I were a boy, to Orlando. I always suspected that the world was marvelous because of its diversity. I don’t like things that are always the same.”

He still remembers the first time he ventured to the United States.

“This is the house of Satan,” he thought to himself, “because that’s what we South Americans think. If I get a cold, blame it on the gringos.”

But with each trip, he had a gradual change of heart.

“The United States, whether you like it or not, is the Tower of Babel, it’s the world’s capital,” he asserted.

“Are your inclinations leftist?” I asked.

“No, absolutely not – and nor am I on the right,” he replied. “I don’t believe in ideologies. Ideologies are a curse.”

I reminded him that he took a strong position against the military dictatorships in Argentina. In fact, he couldn’t return to his country until 1984.

“They were against me,” he said.

“You mention Jesus a lot,” I commented. “And someone else who also talks a lot about Jesus is (Venezuelan President) Hugo Chavez.

“Then there are two Jesuses in this life – or maybe there are two,” he said. “His has little to do with mine.

How can just one man make decisions for a country?

Not even through elections. My mother would say that there are people who seek office in the presidency just to escape from life and family boredom. I think that is a perfect definition for this case.”

“Why haven’t you visited Cuba?” I asked.

“What for? I wouldn’t last five minutes in Cuba. No, I am almost an anarchist, the government of oneself. I never had a family. In fact, I was thrown out of several socialist countries. I went to Russia. They threw me out.

I went to Mao Zedong’s China, and very gracefully, they threw me out.”

“You’ve just said that you don’t have a family, but you did,” I pointed out.

“I had someone who I met here (in the United States) and a daughter,” he said. “Just think how many surprises God had reserved for me in the United States. This woman, who was the love of my life, was from Chicago.

She was 18 years old when I met her. I was 40. I knew she was my woman. She knew I was her man.”

“Together, we traveled around the world for five years until we got to China,” he continued. “They threw us both out of China. And when she was 23 and our daughter was 1, they died in a plane crash.”

“How do you live with that?” I asked. “I lost my father 13 years ago and I still have that sadness hanging over me.”

“I have other news,” he declared, searching my eyes behind his dark glasses. “I remained grateful to God for having known the love of my wife and the love of my daughter. What one loves never dies. My wife and my daughter are with me. Your father is with you.”

After the subject of death, we discussed love. I asked him if he was in love. He surprised me again.

“I don’t fall in love just once,” he said, laughing. “I fall in love all the time. Love has to have a timetable.

A whole day is tedious. And you end up hating each other – and then come the divorces. There should be a schedule. I love you from 8 to 10. And then I have to go because I have to love Maria. And now, I am going to the theater because I have to love the theater.”

We ended our conversation, and it was a bit like hearing one of the songs that framed my youth.

“I am going to say one thing,” he said. “Supposedly, the great goal is happiness. It isn’t. There is one other step. I have a distinct attitude: I demand of myself that I be happy. And I never thought that my happiness would be contagious and that I was going to make so many people in the world happy. To tell the truth, I got carried away.”

“Now, I am at peace,” he revealed. “It is a stage higher than happiness.”

Yo soy ciudadana americana e hice la petición para mi esposo, ya llegó la aceptación y él se tomó las huellas y hasta ahora el proceso va muy bien y rápido pero tengo una duda respecto a que llevó 6 meses desempleada y he tratado de conseguir empleo y no lo he logrado. Mi pregunta es la siguiente: ¿puede esto afectar el proceso de petición si llega la cita y aún continuó desempleada? Estoy desesperada ya que si a él lo legalizan todo sería diferente y él puede trabajar para mejorar nuestra situación económica.

La otra pregunta es respecto a que mi suegro tiene visa americana, él es una persona mayor, tiene 72 años y se le dificulta un poco viajar solo.

Su esposa ha ido al consulado dominicano y le han negado la visa ya en tres ocasiones. Él ya tuvo la visa de 5 años y ahora se la dieron por diez.

Cómo es posible que estando casados legalmente hace más de 17 años y que tienen mucha tierra y propiedades en la República Dominicana lo hayan visado a él y a su esposa no? Además, no entiendo por qué cuando van a la entrevista a inmigración, ni siquiera dejan que su esposo entre a la entrevista con ella.

Ella tiene dos hijos en Pensilvania y otro en Puerto Rico que tiene su propia compañía y puede también hacerse cargo de todos sus gastos. Me gustaría que me orientara también respecto a ese

Con respeto a su suegra, no entiendo porqué el consulado no quiere darle una visa de turista.

El fiscal debe darle algo por escrito que explique la razón. Usted dijo que ella tiene tres hijos dentro de Estados Unidos, entonces me imagino que el cónsul cree que ella va a quedarse acá en vez de volver a su país.

El hecho que sólo uno de la pareja puede visitar, más o menos garantiza que no se quedarán aquí. Si uno de los hijos tiene la ciudadanía estadounidense, ese hijo puede hacer una petición para una visa inmigrante para su suegra y ésta no será negada.

o es la primera vez que el famoso musical N de Broadway “Chicago” se presenta en los escenarios de Kansas City. Tras varias temporadas de

rotundo éxito y una gira que comienza en la Unión Americana, llega al escenario del teatro Starlight del 11 al 16 de agosto para deleitarnos.

“Chicago” es una puesta que se ha caracterizado por la participación de artistas de gran categoría, entre ellos la primera mexicana que llegó a Broadway en 2002 Bianca Marroquín.

Y en entrevista exclusiva para Dos Mundos, nos habla un poco de su personaje en “Chicago”, de sus planes y su carrera.

Dos Mundos: ¿Cómo empezaste tu carrera?

Bianca Marroquín: Nací en Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, pero crecí en la frontera de Tamaulipas y Texas. Mi estilo de vida era muy peculiar… vivía en Matamoros pero cruzaba el puente todas las mañanas para ir a la escuela en Texas; o sea que crecí en medio de dos mundos, dos culturas, dos idiomas, dos tradiciones. Desde muy chiquita mi mamá me metió a clases de ballet y ahí comenzó todo. Siempre supe que quería ser bailarina profesional, después de varios años de ballet agregué otras disciplinas de baile. Cuando me gradúé de la preparatoria quería irme a España a seguir con la danza, pero por órdenes de mi papá me tuve que ir a estudiar al TEC de Monterrey, aunque no acabé mi carrera.

Posteriormente la compañía teatral OCESA abrió su departamento de teatro y la primera obra que presentaba era “La Bella y La Bestia”, que venía directito de Broadway. Hicieron audiciones en Guadalajara y Monterrey y me escogieron. Le dije a mis papás que sólo me iba un año y medio—que era lo que duraba el contrato—y después me regresaba a estudiar, pero ya no regresé porque ahí conocí a mi esposo, que era el encargado del diseño de audio de la obra. Cuando terminó la temporada a los 3 ó 4 meses, nos casamos y me quedé a radicar en el D.F. DM: ¿En qué otras obras haz estado?

BM: “La Bella y La Bestia”, “RENT”, “El Fantasma de la Opera” y “Chicago” con la que llega la maravillosa oportunidad de cruzar a Broadway, debutando en el 2002. Después regresé a México y participé en los “Monólogos de la Vagina“. Era algo muy diferente—un reto totalmente distinto—pues no tenía que bailar ni cantar.

DM: ¿En los Monólogos de la Vagina se da el cambio en tu carrera?

BM: Pues sí. Aunque había otras propuestas, fue ahí precisamente cuando se dio. Estaba a punto de firmar contrato para una telenovela con Televisa y ya había firmado otro con EMI para un disco, porque también soy compositora. Era un viernes, cuando me hablaron de Nueva York, ya que por el éxito de “Chicago” iban a lanzar una nueva gira y me invitaron a encabezarla. Se supone que sólo iba estar seis meses, pero me quedé dos años. Ahora ya me mudé a New Jersey, he participado en otros proyectos y he establecido poco a poco mi carrera acá.

También he participado en proyectos en mi país, en enero hice la “Novicia Rebelde” en el Teatro Insurgentes, pero sólo firmé por seis meses y por fin estoy en mi casa descansando un poco, para iniciar la gira con “Chicago” y posteriormente regresar a Broadway.

DM: ¿Qué significa para ti estar de regreso en “Chicago”?

BM: Me siento muy afortunada de ser una de las actrices de casa en la que año con año siguen confiando y poniendo a cargo a Roxie. Cada vez que me llaman me siento emocionada de saber quién es parte del elenco y con quién me voy a topar en el escenario.

DM: ¿Qué planes tienes?

BM: Bueno, ahorita es la gira con “Chicago” y un poco de Broadway. Vamos ir a Japón—donde nunca he estado—todo el mes de octubre vamos estar en Tokio. Cuando termine mi gira, me gustaría poner en México [al menos un mes] un concierto teatral, que hice en honor de mi madre; y después tratar de traerlo de gira por EE.UU. Todavía no es un hecho, tiene que cuajar y mientras ande de gira tengo que empezar a armarlo, juntar los fondos e invitar a mucha gente a que se suba al proyecto.

DM: ¿Qué significa para ti ser latina y haber llegado a Broadway?

BM: Estoy muy orgullosa, es bonito que reconozcan tu trabajo y esfuerzo. Cuando me dieron mi primer premio, ni me lo esperaba. Cuando escuché mi nombre dije ‘guau’, y me aventé un discurso muy padre. Para mí, ese premio era la aceptación o bienvenida que me daba EE.UU. como artista y espero poder abrir camino para más mexicanos que vienen detrás.

DM: ¿Con quién te gustaría compartir el escenario?

BM: Pues la verdad…no sé, con algún ícono de la comedia musical. Me encantaría actuar con alguien con muchísimo prestigio; sería un honor con mujeres que ya son instituciones.

DM: ¿Algún mensaje para el público de K.C.?

BM: Quiero invocarlos a que se acerquen y sepan que hay alguien latino representándolos en el escenario. Vamos estar en el Starlight, que es un teatro extraordinario, porque de todas las ciudades que he estado en EE.UU. es el único teatro abierto.

Tengo mucha emoción por regresar de esta manera y me encantaría que la comunidad hispana celebre que está presente en el teatro.

DM: De todos los personajes que has interpretado… ¿Cuál es tu favorito?

BM: Me encantan todos, pero siempre que terminó, estoy desesperada por regresar a “Chicago” y hacer a Roxie. Para mí es un personaje bien completo donde puedo hacer muchas cosas como bailar y cantar. Roxie tiene partes vulnerables, eufóricas y locas. Es una mujer algo tocada, pero tiene un arco actoral fabuloso.

DM: ¿Te identificas con ella?

BM: Sí, tenemos nuestras similitudes y diferencias.

l fin de semana pasado celebramos en mi casa el séptimo cumpleaños de mi sobrina Alexandra.

Como no tengo hijos, ella es mi adoración. Soy una tía súper consentidora, por eso contraté a un mago, renté un castillo de aire para que los niños brincaran, traje piñata, columpios y todo lo necesario para que Alexandra tuviera un día inolvidable.

Mi hermana Liza, mamá de Alexandra invitó a la fiesta a un compañero de trabajo. Este muchacho llegó con su hijo Jorgito, quien tiene 10 años y padece del Síndrome de Down. Me conmovió mucho conocerlos, ya que este señor es papá soltero y cría a Jorgito y a su hermanita solo.

Asumí que padres en esta situación siempre temen que sus hijos sean víctimas del rechazo, entonces por esta razón decidí dedicarle más atención a Jorgito que a los otros niños. Cada vez que le pasaba por el lado le expresaba cariño ya fuera tocándole el cabello, haciéndole cosquillas o diciéndole con una sonrisa “Hi, Jorgito!”. Como los niños aprenden con el ejemplo, mi conducta motivó a otros chiquillos a hacer lo mismo. Poco a poco Jorgito se fue integrando a la fiesta hasta que su condición no era un obstáculo y se convirtió en un niño más de la celebración. A tal punto que luego de soplar las velas del pastel y mientras mi hermana repartía unas bolsitas de dulces y juguetitos para cada invitado, un niñita le indicó muy preocupada “¡Jorgito no tiene bolsita!”.

Al día siguiente cuando mi hermana Liza llegó a la oficina, el papá de Jorgito, con lágrimas le dijo: “Gracias por invitarnos…es la primera vez que mi hijo va a un cumpleaños y otros niños lo aceptan y le prestan atención. ¡Ayer pasamos el día más feliz de nuestra vida!”.

Lo que más me asombró de éste incidente es que yo organicé esta celebración con el propósito de que mi sobrinita disfrutara el día más feliz de su existencia. Poco imaginé que sería el día más feliz en la vida de dos extraños que posiblemente, nunca más vuelva a ver. Realmente la vida nos da sorpresas.

Este suceso me enseñó que no debemos subestimar nuestras acciones de amor. Un gesto sencillo puede tocar profundamente el corazón de otra persona y traerle felicidad. A veces sólo basta con una sonrisa, un abrazo o escuchar. La próxima vez que te topes con una viejita lenta, un ambulante o alguien con una discapacidad, muestra tu compasión y aprovecha la oportunidad para hacer una diferencia en tu vida y la de otro.

ecently, we celebrated my niece Alexandra’s seventh birthday at my house. Because I don’t have children, I’m especially devoted to her. I’d do anything for her. So for the party, I hired a magician and rented an inflatable castle for the kids to bounce around in. We had a pinata (piñata in Spanish), swings and everything we could possibly think of to make sure Alexandra had an unforgettable day.

Alexandra’s mother, my sister Lisa, invited a co-worker to the party. He brought his son George, who is age 10 and has Down’s Syndrome. They really touched my heart, because he’s a single father raising George and his little sister on his own.

Assuming that parents of special-needs children are often afraid their kids will be rejected, I paid extra attention to George that day. Every time I walked by him, I gave him a friendly gesture, either patting his head, tickling him playfully or just saying, “Hi George!” with a big smile.

Because children learn by example, my behavior encouraged the kids to do the same. Soon, George was made to feel so welcome that his condition was no longer an obstacle and he became like any other child at the party. When it was time to blow out the candles on the birthday cake as my sister handed out goodie bags to each guest, one girl exclaimed worriedly, “George doesn’t have a goodie bag!”

When Lisa got to work the next day, George’s dad said to her with tears in his eyes: “Thank you so much for inviting us.… That was the first birthday party George has ever been to where the other kids accepted him and paid attention to him.…Yesterday was the happiest day of our lives!”

What really struck me was that I had planned the party so that my niece would have the happiest day of her life. I never imagined that it would be the happiest day in the lives of two strangers I may never see again.

Life is full of surprises!

This experience taught me that we should never underestimate the power of our random acts of kindness.

One simple gesture can deeply touch another’s heart, bringing them great happiness.

Sometimes a smile, hug or simply listening is all it takes.

The next time you come across a frail, elderly person, someone in a wheelchair or with a handicap, show them compassion and take the opportunity to make a difference in their lives – and in your own.

Request for qualifications – Developer for Maple Corners Townhomes The Housing Authority of Kansas City, Missouri (HAKC) is seeking statements of qualifications and development proposals to create a 60-90 unit affordable housing development for seniors on a 13.4-acre site at the northwest corner of Northeast 48th Street and Randolph Road in Kansas City, Missouri. The site is currently zoned R-4, but has an overlay zoning known as a Community Unit Project (CUP) Plan. The current CUP Plan allows 90 units of townhomes, and a cul-de-sac of single-family homes.

HAKC has applied to HUD for approximately $7.5 million in Public Housing Capital Funds for Maple Corners made available through the America Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). HAKC proposes to apply the funds to build 40 units of “patio homes” for seniors. These units would be part of a larger Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) and/or conventional development totaling 60 – 90 units.

The selected respondent will serve as developer, and if LIHTC are used, as managing general partner in a limited partnership. The Developer will lead the project in obtaining all financing. The Respondent may propose additional roles for construction and management. In addition to a qualifications statement and a proposed development concept, the Respondent should propose a fee arrangement for its services, subject to the limitations imposed by the Missouri Housing Development Commission and HUD. Utilization of Public Housing Capital Funds will trigger HUD Mixed-Finance requirements including HUD Safe Harbor Standards, and associated federal requirements including Davis-Bacon and Section 3.

This Request for Qualifications (“RFQ”) contains specific requirements and other information necessary for submitting a proposal. The RFq will be available 9:00 AM, Tuesday, August 4 at HAKC, 301 E. Armour Blvd, Suite 250, KCMO. Submission deadline is 4:00 PM, August 25.

Eggleston handling Northern League pitchers Time in Colombia helpful to KC center fielder

City T-Bones center fielder Aharon Egggleston differently than they have before. But he’s handling their pitches, partly because of his offseason playing winter-league baseball in Colombia.

While playing for Los Tigres de Cartegena in La Liga Colombiana de Beisbol Profesional (Colombian Professional Baseball League), Eggleston faced pitchers who threw hard inside to him, he said. This summer in the Northern League, pitchers are trying to “go

soft away” from him and throw hard inside.

“It (winter ball) helped me adjust,” said he said after going 1-for-5 with a run scored to help the T-Bones cap their latest homestand with a 5-2 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats Sunday (Aug. 2) at Kansas City, Kan.’s CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Eggleston, who’s in his third season with Kansas City, had adjusted well enough to be batting .321, seventh in the Northern League, entering Sunday’s game. After Sunday’s game, he had a team-leading 87 hits and was tied for the team lead with 51 runs scored.

T-Bones manager Andy McCauley believes Eggleston has shown more “maturity at the plate” since playing in Colombia – and a sense of maturity in understanding his team role.

“The maturity (he has gained) from playing down there and … understanding what his role is has really made him the premier center fielder in the league,” McCauley said.

Eggleston hopes to play winter baseball in Latin America again. However, “it’s tough to get in there,” he admitted.

Typically, the winter leagues want players who’ve played in leagues that are affiliated with major-league clubs, rather than players from independent leagues such as the Northern League, Eggleston explained. In fact, if it hadn’t been for a recommendation from another Northern Leaguer, Eggleston might not have received his opportunity.

“Kevin West from Winnipeg (Winnipeg Goldeyes) threw my name out there because they said they were looking for a center fielder…. I was starting to looking for jobs (when I got the offer) – regular 9-to-5 jobs,” Eggleston said.

But even if another opportunity doesn’t occur, Eggleston is grateful for the time he spent in Colombia, not only because of the baseball knowledge he gained, but also because of the life lessons he learned.

“It (living in South America) makes you appreciate what we have up here,” he said.

aylon Entertainment B presentó la lucha libre mexicana el pasado domingo ante más de 100 personas.

El evento contó con luchadores de Kansas City y Chicago en 5 combates que fueron dominadas en su mayoría por los luchadores técnicos. La lucha final contó con la victoria del rudísimo Pirata Morgan.

La pelea estelar presentaba al Dr Wagner Jr. y al Cachorro Balderrama ante el Pirata Morgan y Águila del América, pero una fractura en la espina dorsal no le permitió al Dr. Wagner Jr. luchar, su lugar lo tomó Discovery.

a goliza 6-0 que sufrieron los Wizards ante Dallas, el sábado pasado, fue la gota que derramó el vaso y Kansas City despidió a su entrenador Curt Onalfo y designó a Peter Vernes como técnico interino por lo que resta de la temporada.

Sin embargo, fueron varios factores que se le fueron juntando a Onalfo: la eliminación de la Súper Liga aunado a una mala actuación dentro de la MLS que los tiene en penúltimo lugar en la Conferencia del Este y una racha de cuatro juegos sin ganar.

“Estamos comprometidos por tener consistencia y un equipo ganador”, dijo Robb Heineman, Presidente de los Wizards al hacer el anuncio oficial.

Al final, Onalfo—quien se hizo cargo de los Wizards en el 2007—se va con marca de 27 ganados, 29 perdidos y 22 empates y en dos ocasiones llevó a Kansas City a los playoffs.

Al final, el Pirata Morgan prometió volver y enfrentar al rival prometido, poniendo su cabellera como garantía de su triunfo.

Baylon Entertainment promete seguir con este tipo de eventos y antes de cerrar la noche anunció la llegada de Brazo de Plata “Super Porky” e invitó a la gente a mantenerse en sintonía con La GranD (1340AM) para todos los detalles de tan esperada noche.
