l 11 de Nov. es el Día de los Veteranos, una fecha que Estados Unidos designó para honrar a aquellos que han servido en la milicia.

Rudy Padilla, Comandante de la División de American GI Forum en Kansas City, espera que la gente recuerde a los veternaos hispanos que han servido.

“Mucha información (sobre los veteranos hispanos) no es enseñada a los estudiantes en Estados Unidos; y yo pienso que es importante que las personas sepan el papel que los hispanos han jugado sirviendo a América”, dijo Padilla.

ov. 11 is Veterans Day, the day the United States designates to honor those who’ve served in the military.

Rudy Padilla, chapter commander of the American GI Forum in Kansas City, hopes people will remember the Hispanic veterans who’ve served.

“A lot of information (about Hispanic veterans) is not taught to the students in the U.S., and I think it is important for the (people) to know the role that Hispanics (have) played (in) serving America,” Padilla said.

According to statistics from the GI Forum, there are more than 1.1 million Hispanic veterans in the United States. Hispanics have served in such wars as the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World Ward II, Korean War and the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They can trace their heritage to the U.S. commonwealth of Puerto Rico and such Latin American countries as Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

“It’s an opportunity for us to share the history of the agency and our vision for the future and to honor individuals who exemplify the spirit of our founder,” said John Fierro, the center’s executive director.

New pitch for mass transit

A

long-time light-rail enthusiast has tendered what he considers a daring urban plan to turn the city around and make it work again.

At the heart of his blueprint is an improved transportation system that protects the environment and sets in motion an economic revival for Kansas City, Mo. “Light-rail systems around the country have done these things,” Clay Chastain told Dos Mundos.

Chastain unveiled plans for a 70-mile multimodal transportation system at Union Station that he envisions as a future regional mass-transit hub. His proposed system is built around a 35-mile-long lightrail spine stretching north and south from Kansas City International Airport to Lee’s Summit. The trains would carry up to 500 passengers and rapidly connect riders to many of the city’s attractions – the Kansas City Zoo, Starlight Theatre, the Plaza, Westport, Union Station and downtown.

“We predict that this light-rail line will have 7-10 million passengers in its first year,” Chastain said.

Two modern streetcar lines would feed the rail line. One route would extend from downtown to the Green Impact Zone, a 150-block area in the city’s East Side area tagged to get federal stimulus money for energy-saving related projects. “Our expectations are that all of our guests will be compelled at the end of the luncheon to make a pledge to the organization,” Fierro said. “That financial support will support activities at Mattie Rhodes Center.”

The Kansas City arts and social service center is named for Mattie Florence Rhodes, who lived from 1872 to 1890 in Kansas City. She belonged to the Gleaners, a church-sponsored charitable group of 14 young women. When she died at age 18, she left the Gleaners $500 to establish a mission kindergarten. They renamed their group the Mattie Rhodes Memorial Society and founded the Mattie Rhodes Day Nursery.

The center had earlier announced plans to commemorate Mattie Rhodes by recognizing a leading woman in philanthropy. The 16-member board, however, later selected a second deserving honoree. Their identity is a closely-guard secret.

“I can tell you they’re a mother and daughter with a long history with the center who both embody the generous spirit of Mattie Rhodes,” Fierro said, adding, “We hope this is the start of an annual tradition.”

The little mission daycare, which opened in 1894 in a cottage at 1818 Woodland Ave., has grown into a center with three locations serving more than 10,000 individuals a year.

Once staffed by a handful of volunteers, the Mattie Rhodes Center employs about 50 people.

Services formerly limited to caring for and clothing needy children have extended to include counseling, social services education, culture and arts for families. “ W h i l e the target population has changed throughout history, we’ve been consistent about our focus, which is to create safe and stable families,” Fierro said.

Plans are underway to expand the domestic violence program, thanks to a $424,389 Health Care Foundation o f G re a t e r Kansas City grantawarded i n J u l y. A $60,000 grant from the foundation in September will support a mental health and outreach project.

On Sept. 14, Mattie Rhodes launched a two-year obesity prevention program made possible by yet another grant. Also this year, the center was recognized at the Kansas City Area Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast and presented with a $10,000 check.

“We will use the donation to support youth programs in the Northeast area,” Fierro said.

Coinciding with the 115th birthday is another milestone for the Mattie Rhodes Center: The art gallery turned 10 and unveiled what’s thought to be Kansas City’s largest folk art collection. Mattie Rhodes acquired the 800-plus pieces from throughout the U.S. Southwest and Latin America from Alice Ann Biggerstaff, who died in 2008. The collection will go on display in 2010 at the Partnership Place, a new gallery at 906 Grand Blvd. Until then, the collection is accessible to the public by appointment.

Eight years later, our troops are still there, still bleeding, still dying.

Pressure is building for President Obama to lay out his military strategy in the country that U.S.-led forces invaded after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the East Coast.

U.S. Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, head of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, wants 40,000 more troops. Others in the Obama administration, including Vice President Biden, advocate reducing the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan.

Inevitably, Obama must decide whether to deploy additional forces or draw down troops.

His decision will make world headlines and be endlessly critiqued and debated.

It won’t otherwise affect most of us Americans.

Once we digest the news, we’ll move on to other concerns.

Unlike World War II, we don’t have much personal stake in the war. Our food and material goods aren’t being rationed. We’re not collecting scrap metal or paper to help supply raw materials for the war effort. We’re not growing our own produce so that farmers’ harvests can feed our troops.

Less than .06 percent of Americans are bearing the burden of two wars – the 65,000 U.S. armed forces in Afghanistan and 124,000 in Iraq and their families.

Our troops – the uniformed women and men of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Army National Guard, Air National Guard, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy – are doing the heavy lifting for our national safety and security by trying to bring peace and stability to a troubled region. The sacrifices they and their families are making on our behalf are protracted and monumental. Since 2001, 1.3 million troops have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As of October 2008, 4 percent had deployed four or more times and 36 percent had deployed two or more times, according to Veterans for America.

On Oct. 25, the Department of Defense announced that 5,236 members of the U.S. military had died and 35,896 had been wounded since 2001. More than 100,000 are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, severe depression or both.

St. Francis of Assisi, who famously embodied what he taught, wrote, “Preach the gospel at all times and when necessary use words.”

Nov. 11 is Veterans Day – our national observance to honor and thank our gallant warriors. It’s a fitting time in which to confer some Franciscan cachet. Let’s follow the beloved 12th-century saint’s example and show service members and their families our gratitude.

There are many ways to express it. It’s important to keep after our federal lawmakers to boost spending for veterans’ services and improve benefits for families of those killed or seriously wounded.

In addition, many groups that support veterans and their families can always use donations of time, money or goods. L

a gran ironía en Afganistán es que para ganar la guerra hay que salirse del país. Mientras el ejército de Estados Unidos y las fuerzas de la OTAN sigan ahí, la posibilidad de una victoria se desvanece.

La invasión de Afganistán era, para Estados Unidos, la “guerra buena”. Su justificación era clarísima: El gobierno talibán había apoyado y dado refugio al grupo al Qaeda para ejecutar los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre del 2001 que ocasionaron la muerte a casi 3,000 personas.

Había que acabar con el gobierno afgano para evitar otros ataques terroristas.

La estrategia a corto plazo funcionó. No ha habido otro ataque terrorista en territorio norteamericano. Sin embargo, eso no significa que vivamos más seguros.

Hubo ataques terribles en Londres y Madrid, capitales de países aliados de Estados Unidos en esta guerra. Y ahora hay terroristas de al Qaeda en varios países del mundo -- incluyendo Pakistán, Yemen y Somalia -- y los talibán han recuperado una buena parte del territorio que habían perdido en Afganistán.

Además, en los últimos tres años han aumentado radicalmente los ataques suicidas con bombas de fabricación casera. Más de 800 soldados norteamericanos han muerto en ese conflicto y todo parece indicar que las muertes continuarán.

“El panorama es muy claro”, escribió recientemente el profesor de la Universidad de Chicago y experto en el tema, Robert Pope. “Mientras más tropas se envíen a Afganistán más sentirán sus pobladores que están bajo una ocupación extranjera y esto dará lugar a más ataques suicidas y otros ataques terroristas”.

Los británicos hicieron guerra a Afganistán hace un siglo y perdieron. Lo mismo ocurrió a los rusos hace 30 años. Estados Unidos y los soldados de la OTAN están siguiendo exactamente el mismo camino.

Ocupar Afganistán es perderlo. La única forma de ganar es yéndose.

No se trata, por supuesto, de permitir el regreso sin restricciones de los talibán. Ellos fueron unos gobernantes represivos e intolerantes y, sin duda, acogerían nuevamente a al Qaeda y a otros grupos terroristas antinorteamericanos.

Por lo tanto es preciso que existan bases militares extranjeras dentro de Afganistán y en países vecinos que impidan la planeación y realización de ataques terroristas desde ese país. El gobierno del presidente afgano Hamid Karzai, apoyado por los estadounidenses, es sumamente débil frente al creciente número de insurgentes y de pobladores dedicados al cultivo del opio. Y su credibilidad y legitimidad ha quedado en entredicho por el evidente fraude en las pasadas elecciones. Karzai, sencillamente, no gobierna Afganistán. Otra elección no cambiará eso.

Estados Unidos tiene unos 67,000 soldados en Afganistán y ni siquiera los 40,000 más que ha solicitado el alto mando militar serían suficientes para controlar el país.

Enviar más soldados a un conflicto que se está perdiendo -- como ocurrió en Vietnam -- sólo prolonga la búsqueda de una solución permanente y alarga el establecimiento de una fecha de salida definitiva de los soldados.

El nuevo Premio Nobel de la Paz, Barack Obama, está obligado a definir claramente el objetivo de la guerra en Afganistán y luego ponerle fin. Ganar la guerra no significa quedarse ahí indefinidamente. Para ganar, hay que irse.

he awful irony of the war in Afghanistan is that to win it we’ve got to leave.

As long as U.S. and NATO troops remain there, any chance of victory grows more remote.

For the United States, invading Afghanistan signified the “good war.” Its justification was clear: The Taliban government had sheltered and encouraged al Qaeda, giving the terrorist group the necessary support to carry out the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. The Afghan government had to be eliminated to avoid other terrorist attacks.

The short-term strategy worked. There hasn’t been another terrorist attack on the United States. However, that doesn’t mean that we’re more secure.

Shocking terrorist attacks were launched on London and Madrid, Spain, the capitals of U.S. allies involved in the war. And now al Qaeda terrorists are sprouting in other countries – Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, for example – and the Taliban have recovered much of the territory they had lost in Afghanistan.

During the past three years, suicide attacks with homemade bombs have increased exponentially. About 800 American soldiers have been killed in this conflict and everything seems to indicate that those numbers will increase.

“The picture is clear,” said Robert Pope, political science professor at the University of Chicago. “The more Western troops we have sent to Afghanistan, the more the local residents have viewed themselves as under foreign occupation, leading to a rise in suicide bombings and other terrorist attacks.”

The British fought Afghanistan a century ago and lost.

The same thing happened to the Russians 30 years ago after they invaded Afghanistan. Today, U.S. and NATO troops are following the same route.

Occupying Afghanistan leads to defeat. The only way to win is to go.

This doesn’t mean, of course, allowing an unconditional return of the Taliban. They were repressive and intolerant governors and would be sure to give sanctuary to al Qaeda and other anti-American terrorist groups.

So the presence of foreign military bases in Afghanistan and neighboring countries is essential to curbing the planning and execution of terrorist attacks beyond Afghan borders. But this is different from trying to invent a government and building a nation, as the United States is attempting. The objective should be to attack the terrorists wherever they are, not to occupy and reconstruct all the countries that give al Qaeda shelter.

The government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, backed by the United States, is too weak to deal with the burgeoning number of insurgents and opium growers.

And its credibility and legitimacy have been placed in doubt recently by the clearly fraudulent elections.

Karzai simply cannot control Afghanistan. Another election won’t change that.

The United States has 67,000 soldiers in Afghanistan, and not even the additional 40,000 troops requested by the military high command would be enough to control the country. Sending more soldiers to a war that can’t be won – as happened in Vietnam – only prolongs the search for a permanent solution and delays setting a date for troop withdrawal.

To win the war, the Afghans must regain control of their country and foreigners must leave. Our goal, therefore, should be to create conditions for that to happen.

How long will U.S. troops remain in Afghanistan?

What’s their mission? Answers to those questions are urgent.

The new Nobel Peace Prize winner, U.S. President Barack Obama, has an obligation to clearly define the objective of the war in Afghanistan and then to end it.

Winning the war doesn’t mean remaining there indefinitely. If we want to win, we must leave.

Michael Merdinger: His life’s work is helping people

Michael Merdinger is known among his Spanish-speaking clients as “abogado Miguel”.

D

Merdinger’s college epilogue, therefore, while uncommon, speaks to his passion.

“It’s been a very interesting journey, very much about helping people,” he said.

Merdinger has been a spiritual leader and legal advisor, a rabbi and a lawyer by training. He studied at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary in New York, where he was ordained a rabbi and earned a law degree from New York University.

He considers the two to be similar.

“They’re both professions (in which one is able) to serve others,” he said. “A rabbi helps people with their spiritual and emotional needs; a lawyer helps in hands-on practical ways. I think those complement each other. Both professions are very demanding and very rewarding.”

After completing law school, Merdinger was admitted to the bar in New York, where he practiced law. After joining the rabbinate, he served a congregation in Nashville, Tenn.

Upon relocating in 2006 to the Kansas City area, Merdinger worked in a chaplain residency at Research Medical Center before beginning to lay the groundwork for opening a law firm.

“In many ways, these two things inform each other,” Merdinger said. “Chaplaincy really gave me the opportunity to be present with people under stress; practicing law allows me to help people practically through stressful times, find solutions for those things that might be overwhelming and confusing.

They’re sides of the same coin.”

Merdinger, who’s also licensed to practice law in New Jersey, was admitted to the Missouri Bar in 2007 and the Kansas Bar in 2008.

“I try to handle many different types of cases,” he said. “The diversity keeps it interesting and helps me encounter all types of people.”

Merdinger’s also open to handling basic criminal defense cases, such as representing individuals charged with low-level felonies or misdemeanor drug possession.

“Part of being a general practitioner involves knowing when to bring in someone with special expertise,” he said. “When a client comes to me with multi-faceted problems, I team with (another attorney in a particular specialty) or refer the client to someone with special expertise.”

Merdinger sees clients in his office north of the Plaza by appointment.

Merdinger is a member if the Missouri, Kansas and Kansas City Metropolitan bar associations.

“I practice law in order to help people,” he said. “My goal is to be effective in protecting my clients’ rights and interests, sensitive to their needs and feelings, and cost-effective. I want every client to know that it’s my privilege to be (his or her) advocate.”

When he’s not attending to clients, Merdinger runs for his physical health and participates at his synagogue and studies the Bible and the Torah for his spiritual and emotional health. Obama releases statement on overseas tax haven crackdown

Introduced in both congressional houses, the proposal would halt “billions of dollars worth of (tax) abuses,” according to Obama, who claimed to have introduced “a set of proposals” for a crackdown shortly after his presidency began in January.

“I look forward to working with Congress to turn these proposals into law, so that honest Americans no longer shoulder the burden of the few individuals and businesses that put profit before responsibility,” he said.

A bitter taste / Un muy mal trago Commentary by Javier Sierra, the Sierra Club l final del 31avo. festejo del Mes de la Herencia Hispana (Sept.15—Oct. 15), los latinos todavía estabámos esperando para celebrar una victoria crucial: librarnos del agua tóxica que envenena a muchas nuestras comunidades.

Este problema es nacional. Pero en lo que se refiere a nosotros, los latinos, la situación es mucho más grave.

Este problema lo expuso el New York Times en toda su trágica gravedad en un reportaje histórico sobre la calidad del agua. Denunciaba que desde 2004 ha habido al menos medio millón de violaciones contra la Ley de Agua Limpia.

El Times ofrece un mapa interactivo en el que se detallan estas violaciones con puntos anaranjados. Y si prestamos atención, cuanto mayor sea la concentración de latinos, más anaranjado se pone el mapa.

Esto refleja las conclusiones de la primera encuesta nacional sobre latinos y el medio ambiente, patrocinda en el 2008 por el Sierra Club. El sondeo confirmó lo que todos nos temíamos: que la mayoría de los latinos en EE.UU. (66%) viven, trabajan o van a la escuela peligrosamente cerca de un lugar tóxico.

Esta escandalosa cifra nos indica también que en los lugares tóxicos abunda el agua tóxica.

Como en Anapra, Nuevo México, una de las comunidades más pobres y contaminadas del país. Diariamene, este pueblo, cuya población es 95% hispana, paga las consecuencias del envenenamiento de plomo causado por las emisiones de una fundición cercana.

Hasta su clausura en 1999, durante más de un siglo la fundición ASARCO emitió miles de toneladas de plomo y otros metales pesados que cubrieron las comunidades aledañas con un letal manto gris. Hoy, el plomo ha llegado a los acuíferos que abastecen de agua a la zona.

“El agua que bebemos es peligrosa”, dijo Merit Velasco, representante de La Casita, el centro comunitario de Anapra.

“El 80% de nuestros niños tiene problemas de aprendizaje por culpa del plomo. Además el plomo les hace muy agresivos”.

Los anaprenses parecen estar abandonados a su suerte.

Las autoridades de Nuevo México sólo se limitan a emitir advertencias en inglés de contaminación en el agua. Parece que nadie les ha dicho que en Anapra y otras comunidades fronterizas hasta el 70% no sabe leer en inglés.

Algo parecido está ocurriendo en los pueblos de Rialto y Bloomington, cerca de San Bernardino, California, cuya población es más de la mitad hispana. Allí, el veneno se llama perclorato, un componente del combustible de cohetes, que afecta el crecimiento, desarrollo y metabolismo del cuerpo humano, y causa cáncer. Este veneno procede de instalaciones cercanas de la Fuerza Aérea, la NASA y compañías aeroespaciales.

Según la Coalición de Justicia Medioambiental para el Agua en California, el perclorato se ha detectado en el agua potable, la leche, la leche humana y en los vegetales frescos.

La contaminación afecta a varias comunidades, pero una vez más las más castigadas son las de color.

“La mayoría de los afroamericanos, latinos y pobres vive donde está el perclorato”, indicó Davin Díaz, líder del Centro para la Acción Comunitaria y la Justicia Medioambiental.

“Rialto y Bloomington son áreas de bajos ingresos. No creo que haya contaminación de perclorato en Berverly Hills”.

A dos de las compañías causantes de la contaminación, Lockheed Martin y Aerojet, se les obligó a realizar costosas limpiezas en los condados de Bernardino y Sacramento. Pero como los expone el reportaje del Times, en la vasta mayoría de los casos, los contaminadores quedan impunes.

t the end of the 31st annual Hispanic Heritage month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), we U.S. Latinos were still waiting to celebrate a crucial victory: getting rid of the toxic water that poisons many of our communities.

This problem is nationwide. But as far as we Latinos are concerned, the situation is more critical.

This issue was exposed in all its tragic gravity in a historic New York Times exposé about U.S. water quality.

It stated that since 2004 there’ve been at least 500,000 violations of the Clean Water Act. The Times featured an interactive map detailing the violations with orange dots. And the larger the concentration of Latinos, the more orange the map got.

This reflects the conclusions of the first-ever national survey about Latinos and the environment, sponsored in 2008 by the Sierra Club. It confirmed what we all had feared: Most Latinos (66 percent) live, work or go to school dangerously close to a toxic site.

This outrageous figure also tells us that where there are toxic sites, toxic water abounds, just like in Anapra, N.M., one of the country’s poorest, most polluted communities. Daily, this town, whose population is 95 percent Hispanic, pays the high price of lead poisoning caused by the emissions of a nearby smelter.

Until it was shut down in 1999, for more than a century, the ASARCO smelter spewed thousands of tons of heavy metals, covering the communities around it with a lethal gray cloak. Today, the lead has seeped down to the area’s aquifers.

“The water we drink is dangerous,” said Merit Velasco, a representative from La Casita, Anapra’s community center. “Eighty percent of our children have learning disabilities because of the lead. Also, the lead makes them very aggressive.”

Anaprans seem to be resigned to their fate. The New Mexico authorities limit themselves to issuing water pollution warnings only in English. Someone should tell them that in Anapra and many other border communities, 70 percent of the residents cannot read English.

Something similar is occurring in Rialto and Bloomington, close to San Bernardino, Calif., whose populations are more than half Hispanic. There, the poison is perchlorate, a component of rocket fuel, which affects the human body’s growth, development and metabolism and is known to cause cancer. This poison comes from nearby facilities run by the Air Force, NASA and defense contractors.

According to the Environmental Justice Coalition for Water in California, perchlorate has been detected in drinking water, milk, breast milk and fresh vegetables.

The pollution affects several communities, but again, the most punished are those of color.

“Where the perchlorate is, the majority of African American, Latino and poor whites live,” said Davin Diaz, a leader of the local Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice. “Rialto and Bloomington are lowincome areas. I don’t think there is a perchlorate plume in Beverly Hills.”

Two of the polluters, Lockheed Martin and Aerojet, were forced to undertake expensive perchlorate cleanups in Bernardino and Sacramento counties. But as the Times exposé stated, for most polluters, their crimes are water under the bridge.

Indeed, this is a bitter taste. According to the Times, 10 percent of Americans have been exposed to polluted drinking water, 19.5 million get sick every year after drinking water contaminated with pathogens and 40 percent of community water services and 23,000 companies or institutions have violated the Clean Water Act since 2004.

The exposé also quoted an unnamed Environmental Protection Agency source as saying impunity was particularly intense during the George W. Bush administration: “We were told to take our clean water and clean air cases, put them in a box and lock it shut.”

The Obama administration has promised it will revitalize the existing clean water standards and establish others to deal with new threats. We Latinos hope so, because our independence from bitter tastes would truly be something to celebrate.

eguro que este título me ganará nuevos lectores.

Seamos honestos, a todos nos gusta un buen “bochinche”. ¿Cuántas veces alguien ha venido a traerte un chisme de un amigo, familiar o compañero de trabajo y paras la oreja inmediatamente?

Conversaciones que comienzan con “¡adivina lo que me dijeron de Fulanita! ”, son demasiado tentadoras para rechazar. ¿Te consideras una persona chismosa? De seguro dirás: ¿Quién, yo? Si alguna vez haz compartido información que perjudica la reputación de alguien, ¡lo eres! No importa si la información era verdadera o falsa, lo cierto es que te diste gusto chismeando de alguien.

Algunos se excusan diciendo que no llevan chismes, pero si se los traen los escuchan. Su defensa es: “A mí no me gusta el chisme, pero me entretiene”. Quien se presta a oír rumores es tan responsable como el que lo cuenta, pues la conversación de ambos es lo que alimenta el chisme. Daño.

Quizá piensas que un chisme es sencillamente una conversación picosa y nada más; sin embargo, puede ser como el cáncer, que si no se para a tiempo, puede crecer hasta que ocasione consecuencias fatales. Chismear es dañino y no aporta absolutamente nada a tu vida ni a la de los demás.

De seguro haz pasado por la experiencia de que alguien regó un rumor sobre ti y sabes lo hiriente y humillante que es. No te prestes para causarle ese tipo de dolor a otra persona. La próxima vez que alguien te diga: “¿oíste lo que se comenta de la secretaria y el jefe?”, antes de escuchar, haz las tres preguntas “anti-chismes”: - ¿Ya comprobaste si lo que me vas a contar es indudablemente cierto?

Si la persona te dice que no, hazle la segunda interrogante: - ¿Lo que vas a compartir es positivo y nos va a ayudar de alguna manera?

En caso de que la respuesta sea negativa, continúa con la pregunta final: - ¿Es necesario que me entere de esta información?

Si la contestación es no, significa que estás a punto de escuchar algo que quizás no es cierto, no es positivo ni necesario, en pocas palabras, ¡un chisme!

No fomentes el chisme. Uno de mis pasajes bíblicos favoritos dice: “de la abundancia del corazón, habla la boca”. Lo que un ser humano enuncia es un reflejo de la nobleza que guarda en su interior. Deja que tus palabras muestren la bondad de tu corazón.

Let’s be honest. Everybody likes juicy gossip. How many times has somebody said they’ve got a secret about a friend, relative or co-worker and you’ve been all ears? Conversations that start with “you’ll never guess what I heard about so-and-so” are too tempting to ignore.

Are you a gossiper? Of course you’d deny it, but if you’ve ever shared information that could damage somebody’s reputation, then you are! It doesn’t matter if it was true or false. The fact is, you enjoyed gossiping about someone.

Some will rationalize that they never spread gossip, but if somebody else has a juicy tidbit, they’ll gladly listen.

Their defense is, “I don’t like spreading rumors, but it’s entertaining.”

Whoever listens to rumors is just as responsible as the person telling them, because they’re both participating in a conversation that fans the flames of gossip.

Maybe you think gossip is an interesting conversation topic, nothing more.

But it can be like a cancer; if it’s not caught in time, it can grow and even have fatal consequences. Gossiping is harmful and adds nothing to your life or anybody else’s.

At some point, you’ve probably been on the receiving end of a rumor about you, so you know how hurtful and humiliating it is. Refuse to play any role in causing someone else this kind of pain. The next time someone says, “Did you hear what everyone’s saying about the boss and his secretary?” Before listening, ask the following three “anti-gossip” questions: *Can you prove what you’re about to tell me is true, without a doubt? If the person says, “No,” then ask the next question: *Is what you have to share positive – and will it be helpful in some way? If the answer is negative, then ask the last question: *Do I have to know about this? If the answer is again no, it means you’re about to hear something that isn’t necessarily true, or positive. In other words, it’s just gossip!

Don’t spread gossip. One of my favorite Bible passages states: “From a full heart, the mouth speaks.” What a person says is a reflection of their true nature.

Let your words reveal the goodness in your heart.

Dos líneas modernas de carros alimentarán la líneas del tren. Una ruta se extenderá del centro hasta la Zona de Impacto Verde, un área de 150 cuadras en el lado este de la ciudad etiquetada para recibir dinero de estimulo federal para proyectos relacionados con el ahorro de energía. The plan also calls for diverting streets around Penn Valley Park, making it car-free and building a Ferris wheel.

“It would become a 250-acre pastoral oasis, a premiere central city park,” Chastain said.

One of the design’s strengths is that it positions the light-rail line, streetcar lines and electric shuttle buses where they make the most sense, he said.

Construction of the system is projected to cost $2.2 billion and relies on Kansas City voters approving the use of a 1/4-cent sales tax and a 1/8cent transportation sales tax over 25 years to raise $1.25 billion. Chastain expects to raise another $1.4 billion in grants from the federal government to build the system and an additional $300 million from the state of Missouri, $250 million from private contributions, $250 million each from the city’s general fund and the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority to cover financing charges and operations and maintenance.

The electric buses could be operating within two years, and Chastain said he would push for the entire system to be operational within seven years.

A former Kansas City resident who lives in Virginia, Chastain launched two petition drives: one to get the multimodal transportation system on the city ballot and one to change the city charter to prevent the City Council from rescinding voter-approved initiatives. The council used that power to overturn a light-rail plan approved in 2006 by Kansas City voters.

Chastain aims to gather the 4,280 signatures needed for each petition by spring 2010 and get the measures on the ballot for the 2010 primary or general election.

Noting Kansas City’s pressing infrastructure needs, Chastain argued that the transit system is a better investment. Construction would create a burst of jobs, and the system would provide ongoing economic stimulus. It also would attract energy-related industries, incentivize development along the rail lines and attract the talent lost over the decades back to the city.

l 24 de Oct., el programa Promotores de Salud de El Centro Inc. llevó a cabo otra ceremonia de graduación.

El evento ocurrió en las instalaciones de la Academia de Niños de El Centro Inc. en Kansas City, Kan. La madrina de la generación fue Maria del Pilar Hanes y la madrina de honor fue Paula Cupertino. Otros invitados incluyeron a Jeff Fendorf, Susan Garrett, Elizabeth Reynoso and Raul Villegas.

uego de casi 20 años de ausencia, el Chevy Camaro regresa para imponerse como uno de los deportivos más atractivos y competentes en el mercado, con una combinación ideal de nostalgia y tecnología.

El nuevo Camaro es un viaje al pasado; una interpretación moderna de la primera generación que se remonta a los sesentas cuando la industria automotriz americana se encontraba en su cúspide.

Su diseño retro es un estímulo visual, inmediatamente reconocible como un Camaro, desde su alta cintura, cadera ancha y techo chato hasta las ranuras verticales en el guarda fango trasero que evocan el modelo del 69.

Sus proporciones lo hacen visualmente más compacto y liviano de lo que es en realidad. Ya de por si el nuevo Camaro genera gran interés; el modelo V-6 simplemente aumenta su atractivo y amplía su alcance en el mercado con un precio base de $22,680. Con 304 caballos y aceleraciones en el orden de los seis segundos induce piel de gallina; y la nota del sistema de escape doble es un deleite sonoro.

Este detalle añade un elemento de sorpresa y sensación de calidad y calidez a la cabina.

Dentro de mis observaciones de la cabina están el cinturón de seguridad, el cual va montado muy alto sobre el pilar lateral y tiende a rozar sobre el cuello del conductor/pasajero.

La altura del cinturón no es ajustable, lo cual fácilmente eliminaría este inconveniente. El diseño exterior produce puntos ocultos que limitan la visibilidad. Para mitigar esta deficiencia, el Camaro se beneficiaria de un sistema de sensores laterales para alertar al conductor de obstáculos a los lados del auto y evitaría tener que voltearse para mirar al cambiar de canal.

La posición de manejo es típica de un deportivo. La calibración de la suspensión produce un andar firme más no rígido o innecesariamente duro que se disfruta tanto en ciudad como carretera. Los reflejos son inmediatos y el Camaro se siente muy aferrado al pavimento, sin embargo el timón es liviano y algo desconectado, transmitiendo las imperfecciones del pavimento, a veces sacudiendo el tren delantero.

Estamos presenciando el renacer de uno de los famosos ‘Muscle Car’ de los setentas. Es un nuevo capítulo para el Camaro y un símbolo de esperanza y catalizador para impulsar a la industria a retomar el auge de antaño.

Su esencia sigue siendo la de un auto rebelde y salvaje, pero sin olvidar sus raíces, siendo ahora más refinado que nunca.

Cuando pase la novedad, el Camaro tiene la substancia para mantener su encanto, respaldado por una excelente relación precio valor, ingrediente clave para hacerlo irresistible.

La rivalidad que ha existido entre ellos es notoria y la expectativa entre entusiastas se centra en como el nuevo Camaro forzará a todo el segmento a seguir mejorando.
