any Mexicans visiting their homeland during the holiday season are unsatisfied with the Paisano Program because of the crime at the Mexican-U.S. border. The program was created in 1989 to help Mexicans avoid any kind of abuse while returning to Mexico during the holidays. Supported by several government agencies, the program is usually conducted at ports of entry such as airports, bus terminals and motor vehicle border checkpoints. On her journey to Guadalajara, Overland Park, Kan., resident Andrea Perez and her family were victims of extortion while trying to cross the border at Laredo, Texas. “My husband stopped the car at the traffic light, then we pushed the button and we got the green light. The Mexican army said we could go ahead,” Perez said. II veterans occupied the front rows of a commercial airliner leaving Kansas City International Airport. They landed in Washington, D.C., to a hero’s welcome. Fire trucks ceremoniously lined up on either side of their plane and directed streams of water arcing over the aircraft. When the veterans, all in their 80s and 90s, entered the airport terminal, they were greeted with another salute. “There must have been 100 or more people shouting and waving horns and flags,” Santillan recalled. “It was quite a welcome.” Santillan and the other Kansas City area World War II veterans were among about 700 veterans from across the country converging on the nation’s capital that day in trips made possible by the Honor Flight Network. The non-profit organization arranges for veterans to visit the monuments in Washington that memorialize their service. There’s no charge to the veterans. n Sunday (Nov. 29), Hondurans elected the president to succeed Manuel Zelaya, whose government was overthrown in June. According to the Inter Press Service, the elections were held in a tranquil environment and observed by around 300 people. On Monday (Nov. 30), Porfirio Lobo from the National Party was declared the winner with more than 55 percent of the votes. However, several newspapers have reported that more than 60 percent of Honduran voters didn’t vote. In a press release from the office of the Honduran presidency, Roberto Micheletti, interim president of Honduras, stated that Lobo will be the new president because he was elected democratically. Funeral del padre de tres niños asesinado

l funeral de Wilfredo M. Melgar se llevó a cabo el 27 de Nov., un día después del Día de Acción de Gracias. Cerca de 150 personas asistieron a los servicios en la Funeraria de la Familia Barreto ubicada en la capilla del mausoleo Washington Forever en Independence, Mo. Melgar, de 27 años, recibió un tiro fatal tras el robo en la tienda Abarrotes ubicada en 3401 E. 12 St. en Kansas City, Mo. Cerca de las 11 a.m. del 21 de Nov., dos hombres armados asaltaron la tienda propiedad del hermano de Melgar y huyeron a pie. Melgar y su hermano los persiguieron, alcanzándolos una cuadra más adelante. Funeral held for murdered father of three By Edie R. Lambert

ilfredo M. Melgar’s funeral was held Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving. About 150 people attended the services at the Barreto Family Funeral Home in the Mount Washington Forever mausoleum chapel in Independence, Mo. Melgar, 27, was fatally shot following a robbery at the Abarrotes grocery store at 3401 E. 12th St. in Kansas City, Mo. About 11 a.m. on Nov. 21, two gunmen robbed the store owned by Melgar’s brother and fled on foot. Melgar and his brother chased them, catching up with them a block away. When Melgar, also on foot, closed in on them at 12th and Bales, one of the gunmen ruthlessly opened fire, hitting Melgar four times. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
