KC BizFest inspira a jóvenes empresarios MCAC promoviendo

inanciado por la Fundación Jack Kent con un subsidio de $1 millón, Missouri College Advising Corps (MCAC) está animando a los estudiantes a seguir una educción universitaria y obtener un título en su campo de estudios deseado. unded by the Jack Kent Foundation with a $1 million grant, the Missouri College Advising Corps (MCaC) is encouraging students to pursue a college education and get a degree in their desired field of study. according to Missouri Department of education statistics, 65.2 percent of Missouri high school graduates planned to attend college. The MCaC is trying to help them do so by advising high school students and guide them through the college application process. “We really want to help high school students and let them know college is possible,” said Beth TankersleyBankhead, MCaC executive director. ore than 80 Kansas City area high school juniors and seniors recently illustrated their desire to make life better for their families, their communities and themselves. From Feb. 10 to 13, the students learned how to turn their passions into entrepreneurial businesses at KC BizFest, a youth entrepreneurship training program sponsored by the greater Kansas City Hispanic Collaborative and its sister organization, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of greater Kansas City (HCC), in concert with regional foundations and businesses. Some of their plans will be put into effect immediately. Hilton Javier Navarro, a junior at grandview (Mo.) High School, was the winner of the first place and received a $2,250 scholarship prize for his business plan for Baile Le Vela, a dance studio for people who want to learn various dances to traditional Mexican music. He hopes to attend Harvard University and become an engineer. For Shawnee Mission (Kan.) east High School senior Marisol galicia, who won the 2nd. place and received a $1,750 scholarship and a $50 special recognition award, the plan she designed will materialize into an immediate business page 7a >

ansas City, Mo., Mayor Mark Funkhouser K rolled out his Schools First initiative on Jan. 31 in an annual address at all Souls Unitarian Universalist Church. On Feb. 9, he took his campaign to the public. More than 800 people participated in the mayor’s tele-town hall meeting to learn more about the fivepart plan, according to Kendrick Blackwood, chief of staff to the mayor. Funkhouser opened the hour-long event with a 10-minute overview of Schools First before taking questions. The initiative, he claims, will address the problems fueling suburban flight and lead to repopulating the city’s urban core. His plan calls for improving the infrastructure in a 50-square-block area around each of about 275 public, charter, faith-based and private schools located in Kansas City; expanding police presence in and around schools; and page 6a >
