or Mexico, 2010 is one of the most important years in its history because the year marks two milestones: 200 years of independence and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Mexicans worldwide will soon celebrate both milestones, called the “Mexican Bicentennialâ€? and promoted by the Mexican government. The celebration will include multiple concerts, special dances and the traditional “Gritoâ€? (“Shoutâ€?). In Kansas City, Sociedad Hidalgo will host a dinner on Sept. 17 at the Ritz Charles. For more information, call (913) 268-5525. On Sept. 16, 1810, the Rev. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang a church bell in Guanajuato, Mexico, to call for a movement for Mexican independence from Spain. Criollos, a social group formed by Mexican-Spaniards, and the Indians were tired of sharing the wealth of the country, and of being part of a society with a tremendous amount of social inequality. Hidalgo held up a banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe and yelled, “Long live Mexico!â€? Mexicans responded. However, not many people know that the independence movement was planned to begin Oct. 2, 1810. Because of an increasing number of complaints, the leaders of the revolution moved the date to September. Hidalgo spearheaded the movement to eliminate slavery and pay taxes to Spain. Gradually, people joined the movement. Others who made the independence movement possible included Ignacio Allende, Ignacio Aldama, Josefa Ortiz de Dominguz , Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon, Vicente Guerrero, Francisco Javier Mina, Jose de Iturbide and Joaquin Arias. To commemorate Mexico’s independence, every year, the Mexican president comes out the National Palace, grabbing a Mexican ag and repeating Miguel Hidalgo’s words. About 150,000 people gather every year in downtown Mexico City to celebrate the “Grito.â€? The Mexican Revolution was launched in 1910 to overthrow Mexican President PorďŹ rio Diaz. Diaz, who was establishing a dictatorship, was president for more than 30 years. The top leader of the Mexican Revolution was Francisco I. Madero. Other important leaders included Venustiano Carranza, who enacted the Mexican Constitution in 1917.
