City honors Westside CAN cops

ansas City, Mo., police Officers Chato Villalobos and Matthew Tomasic and their families; the police department’s top brass, including Chief Jim Corwin; and a contingent of Westside supporters were present Dec. 9 when the City Council unanimously passed a resolution commending the officers.

Villalobos and Tomasic have set the gold standard for innovative and effective crime prevention, the resolution read.

The two are community police officers assigned to the Westside Community Action Network (CAN) Center. Tomasic, who joined the force in 1993, was stationed at the center in 2001. Villalobos, a Westside native and 11-year veteran police officer, transferred there in 2006.

Mayor Mark Funkhouser presented official copies of the resolution to Villalobos and Tomasic during the council’s regular legislative session.

“Every time we have the opportunity to commend the men and women of our police department, we welcome that opportunity, but we particularly welcome that opportunity when you have such a noticeable impact on a PÁGINA 2A> large segment of our community,” Funkhouser told the officers. “What you have done is a model for the rest of the city.”

Overall, five resolutions honoring various groups and individuals were given during the start of the council meeting after the invocation by the Rev. Willie Murillo, pastor of Sheffield Family Life Center.

Councilwoman Deb Herman thanked Villalobos and Tomasic.

“You’ve had a hard job, and you’ve certainly met that challenge,” she said. “We have seen the kind of sustainable community policing recognized worldwide now. Thank you both for your dedication.”

Jan Marcason, councilwoman for the Westside, said: “We call the work of these wonderful police officers community policing, but it’s really community building. They have made the area a lot safer, but they’ve also given folks who were disenfranchised a place to come and do some productive things.”

Colombia organiza las novenas navideñas, durante las cuales la gente se reúne para rezar y celebrar la travesía de María y José a Belén, donde nació Jesús.

Durante la era de los aztecas, México tenía una celebración similar a las posadas del 17 al 26 de Dic., durante las cuales la gente festejaba al Dios de la Guerra (Huitzilopochtli). De cualquier manera, con la colonización española, los indígenas modificaron sus tradiciones y empezaron a celebrar las posadas.

Muchas partes de América Latina celebran las posadas—particularmente México y Guatemala—comenzando el 16 de Dic. y se realizan durante nueve días. Éstas representan el recorrido que María y José hicieron para pagar sus impuestos y buscar refugio antes del nacimiento de Jesús.

Las posadas se celebran tradicionalmente con imágenes de María y José, dulces y piñatas.

La gente carga las figuras de los peregrinos y recorren un área detrminada cantando y recitando los versos que los peregrinos decían para pedir refugio. Éstas se celebran normalmente en las calles. Algunas personas permanecen afuera de la casa que visitan y cargan a los peregrinos mientras los otros permanecen adentro.

The arrival of the Christmas season is celebrated in different ways in Latin America.

Puerto Rico observes the Mass of Carol, which is celebrated to give thanks.

Ecuador observes the Novenas. Peru showcases Christmas by displaying different Nativity scenes.

Colombia observes the Novenas Navidenas (Navideñas in Spanish), during which people gather to pray and observe Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born.

Tropicana launches Xmas flavors

or ice cream lovers, Paleteria Tropicana is serving three special Christmas flavors during December to celebrate the holidays: cinnamon with cajeta, peppermint and eggnog.

In addition, the store is serving three types of ice cream cones: one covered with chocolate and sprinkles, one covered with white chocolate and peppermint, and one covered with peanut and walnuts.

“The idea is to give our customers the traditional flavors of the season,” said Jose Luis Valdez, owner of Tropicana.

Tropicana family also will offer the new Three Merry Christmas cone, which has scoops of eggnog, peppermint, and cinnamon with cajeta ice cream and is served in a waffle ball covered with white chocolate and peppermint.

Valdez added the flavors to provide his customers with new products.

“We feel the need to be on … top and provide our customers with the best,” Valdez said.

The pricing of the new flavors will be the same. However, customers who add any topping or cover will have to pay 75 cents extra.

For those who don’t like of ice cream during the winter, Tropicana also will offer traditional tamales oaxaquenos (oaxaqueños in SpanPAGE 4A>

Letter to the Editor: Realizing the American DREAM Cómo hacer realidad el SUEÑO americano

sta semana, nuestros funcionarios electos tendrán la oportunidad de aprobar el proyecto de ley DREAM Act el cual impulsará la recuperación económica de nuestro país al brindarle a nuestra juventud la posibilidad de hacer realidad el sueño americano. La Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Estados Unidos exhorta con insistencia la aprobación del proyecto de ley DREAM. La Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Estados Unidos funciona como una organización paraguas que incluye a más de 200 cámaras locales en todo nuestro país, y representa los intereses de empresarios hispanos cuyos negocios generan alrededor de $400 mil millones [de dólares] en ingresos anuales; negocios cuya prosperidad continua depende de la juventud de hoy y de los empresarios, doctores, abogados, científicos e ingenieros del mañana.

El proyecto de ley DREAM es un ejemplo perfecto de que hoy en día el SUEÑO americano continúa con vitalidad y fortaleza en nuestra nación. De ser aprobado, este proyecto de ley histórico proporcionará a miles de jóvenes la oportunidad de continuar su educación y/o servir en las fuerzas armadas de nuestro país. Al trabajar juntos hacia la recuperación económica de nuestra nación, es importante que nuestra juventud trabajadora y prometedora forme parte de esta solución.

Estudios recientes mostraron que el proyecto de ley DREAM aumentará los ingresos de nuestras comunidades. La Oficina de Presupuesto del Congreso (CBO, por sus siglas en inglés) estima que de aprobarse el proyecto de ley DREAM se incrementarán los ingresos en $2,300 millones de dólares en el período de 2011 a 2020. Después de contabilizar gastos, la Oficina de Presupuesto del Congreso (CBO) y el Comité Conjunto sobre Tributación (JCT, por sus siglas en inglés) estiman que el proyecto de ley reducirá los déficits en aproximadamente $1,400 millones en el período de 2011 a 2020.

De acuerdo con un estudio reciente llevado a cabo por la Universidad de California en Los Ángeles (UCLA, por sus siglas en inglés), los estudiantes afectados por el proyecto de ley DREAM podrían contribuir a nuestra economía con entre $1,400 y $3,600 millones de dólares en ingresos gravables durante el transcurso de sus carreras profesionales, dependiendo de cuántos obtengan su estatus legal con el paso del tiempo.

Estos ingresos son sustancialmente mayores a los que ganarían sin contar con una educación universitaria.

Además, el proyecto de ley DREAM Act brinda un retorno cuantioso en el dinero que nuestro país ya ha invertido al prepararse para la economía global. Los estudiantes que se beneficiarán con el proyecto de ley DREAM han sido criados y educados en EE.UU. y los contribuyentes locales y estatales ya han invertido en su educación en escuelas primarias y secundarias. ur elected officials are presented with the occasion to pass legislation – the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act – that will propel the economic recovery of our country by providing our youth the opportunity to realize the American dream.

The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) urges for the passage of the DREAM Act. The USHCC serves as the umbrella organization for more than 200 local chambers across our nation, representing the interests of Hispanic businesses that generate nearly $400 billion in revenue annually – businesses whose continued prosperity relies on today’s youth and tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, scientists and engineers.

The DREAM Act is a perfect example that today the American dream is alive and well in our nation. If passed, this historical bill will provide thousands of youngsters the opportunity to continue their education and/ or serve our nation in the military. As we work together toward the economic recovery of our country, it is important that our hard-working and promising youth be part of the solution.

Recent studies show the DREAM Act will increase revenues in our communities. The Congressional Budget Office estimate of the DREAM Act shows the legislation will increase revenues by $2.3 billion during the 2011-2020 period. After accounting for spending, the Congressional Budget Office and Joint Committee on Taxation estimate the bill will reduce deficits by about $1.4 billion over 2011-2020.

According to a recent study conducted by UCLA, students impacted by the DREAM Act could add between $1.4 and $3.6 trillion in taxable income to our economy during their careers, depending on how many ultimately gain legal status. This income is substantially higher than the income they would earn without a college education.

Furthermore, the DREAM Act provides a vast return on money our country has already invested while preparing our country for the global economy. The students who will benefit under the DREAM Act have been raised and educated in the United States and state and local taxpayers have already invested in their education in elementary and secondary school.

Today’s global economy requires an educated and skilled workforce capable of acquiring, creating and distributing knowledge. The DREAM Act will play a significant role in the nation’s efforts to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020 and will create a group of talented, multilingual and multicultural workers that will help America compete with innovators throughout the world.

As national, regional and local representatives for nearly 3 million Hispanic-owned businesses nationwide, the USHCC encourages the members of our U.S. Senate, House of Representatives and our country’s leaders to look past their political differences and collaborate in the passage of the DREAM Act. We remain confident that these citizens will help continue to make our country a leader in the global economy.

obesidad mórbida necesita urgentemente un plan sensible de reducción y un programa de administración del gasto que evite el volumen excesivo. Pero iniciar el programa de pérdida de peso presupuestal federal recortando los beneficios de desempleo no es sensible.

El 30 de Nov., el Congreso no renovó una extensión que había pasado en julio. Los legisladores no se pusieron de acuerdo en el financiamiento de un estimado de $5,000 millones al mes. Los demócratas se enfocaron en la ampliación del programa federal de cuatro niveles que provee hasta 53 semanas de beneficios adicionales. Los republicanos querían financiar el costo de seguir con el programa de Compensasión de Desempleo de Emergencia (EUC) reduciendo el gasto en otros lados.

El 6 de Dic., el presidente Obama llegó a un compromiso con los republicanos, que buscaban extender los recortes fiscales de la era Bush que vence el 31 de Dic. ur morbidly obese national budget deficit urgently needs a sensible reduction plan and a spending management program to keep off excess bulk. But commencing the federal budgetary weight loss program by cutting unemployment benefits isn’t sensible.

On Nov. 30, Congress failed to renew an extension it had passed in July. Lawmakers couldn’t agree on financing the estimated $5 billion-a-month price tag. Democrats focused on extending the four-tier federal program that provides up to 53 weeks of additional benefits. Republicans wanted to fund the cost of continuing the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program by cutting spending elsewhere.

On Dec. 6, President Obama struck a compromise with Republican lawmakers, who sought to extend the Bush-era tax cuts set to expire on Dec. 31. He agreed to support extending the tax cuts for two years for everyone, including people making more than $250,000 a year, which had been a sticking point. His concession won backing from Republicans to extend the EUC program for 13 months.

The compromise package the president and Republicans negotiated includes other perks that sweeten the deal for nearly everybody.

There’s a one-year, 2 percent reduction in Social Security payroll taxes. The $1,000 child tax credit for many taxpayers will be extended for two years. Congress will raise the amount of income exempt from the Alternative Minimum Tax for 2010 and 2011.

In addition, current tax rates on long-term capital gains will be frozen for two years. Lower tax rates on dividend income and a $2,500 tax credit for college tuition will be extended. And the estate tax set to go up to 55 percent of an estate’s value on Jan. 1, 2011, will be reset to 35 percent on estates valued at more than $5 million.

But the deal’s in jeopardy.

So far, Capitol Hill Democrats have rejected the president’s compromise deal, and some Republicans are balking at the $900 billion add-on to the deficit. White House advisors, state governors and city mayors of all political stripes, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, some economists and former President Bill Clinton are urging recalcitrant lawmakers to sign on.

It’s the best available option, Clinton told reporters during a Dec. 10 news conference at the White House.

If congressional opponents quash the deal, a “typical American family,” according to the president, will pay at least $3,000 more in federal taxes come Jan. 1. And – more crucially – nearly 2 million unemployed workers will lose their lean financial lifeline.

Renewing benefits for the long-term unemployed – and averting an immediate, hefty income tax hike – amounts to an investment in our economic future. It provides a little cash for low- and moderate-income families. As they’re most likely to spend it, the extension adds up to a short-term stimulus. In supporting their local economy, the long-term unemployment beneficiaries would save or create nearly 500,000 jobs nationwide, the Economic Policy Institute estimates.

Congress must end the deadlock and extend jobless benefits before it adjourns for the Christmas recess.

According to Mark Zandi of Moody’s Analytics, the deal the president brokered with Republicans significantly improves the odds of a “substantial boost to growth in 2011” and U.S. economic recovery.

Many parts of Latin America observe the Posadas, particularly Mexico and Guatemala.

On Dec. 16, Mexico and other Latin American countries start the Posadas celebration. Observed over nine days, the Posadas represent the journey Mary and Joseph made to pay their taxes and their search for shelter before Jesus’ birth.

The Posadas are traditionally observed with icons of Mary and Joseph, candy and pinatas (piĂąatas in Spanish). People carry the pilgrim icons and move around a designated area, praying and reciting the verses the pilgrims said to ask for shelter.

The Posadas are usually celebrated on the streets. Some people stay outside the house that is visited and carry the pilgrims, while others stay inside the house.

At the end, the pilgrims enter the house and the pinata is broken. Nowadays, people may use any kind of piùata, but in most homes, it’s a tradition to break a sevenpoint star. The seven points on the pinata symbolize the seven deadly sins.

During December, many Hispanic families in the United States celebrate the Posadas as if they were in their respective homelands. For most Hispanic families, the Posadas mark the start of celebrating the Christmas season.

Abogada: Tengo corte por un ticket de tráfico y no tengo papeles…¿qué probabilidades hay de que inmigración llegue a la Corte?

El Departamento de inmigración o “ICE” (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) por lo regular no está presente ni en las Cortes municipales ni en las estatales. Algunas veces, inmigración sólo se presenta para detener a personas que están siendo sentenciadas por algún delito mayor o de drogas y que carecen de estatus legal en este país.

El Departamento de inmigración no asiste regularmente a las cortes, ni los jueces de las cortes están dispuestos a tenerlos cerca, ya que los acusados indocumentados tendrían miedo de asistir a pagar sus multas pendientes.

La única corte que tiene la política de detener al acusado hasta por una infracción de tráfico es la de Lee’s Summit. Ahí si una persona no tiene documentos de estatus legal en el país, y se declara culpable de alguna infracción, el juez le impone uno o dos días de cárcel con el único propósito de que inmigración venga a recogerlo. Aparte de esa corte, no conozco ninguna otra municipalidad del área que haga esa distinción para imponer una

penalidad por una infracción.

Lo que si debe preocuparle es tener órdenes de arresto pendientes en otras jurisdicciones, porque de ser así, lo podrían aprehender en la corte en donde se presente a pagar su ticket—y no por no tener documentos, sino por no haber cumplido con su citatorio anterior.

l torrente reciente de documentos confidenciales de la política exterior estadounidense revelados en el sitio WikiLeaks confirma que estamos en un mundo más abierto y transparente que nunca.

Y la sencilla función de WikiLeaks parece ser la nueva premisa del siglo 21: una vez publicado, nada desaparece. Si algo aparece en la pantalla de una computadora, muy probablemente será guardado en alguna parte. En esta era digital, incluso un texto íntimo puede convertirse, con sólo un clic del mouse, en un asunto público. Futuros candidatos presidenciales se están descalificando de competir cuando, dentro de dos o tres décadas, las provocativas fotos y declaraciones que hoy presumen alegremente y sin vergüenza en Facebook y Twitter, vuelvan a aparecer.

Esencialmente, lo que suponíamos privado ha dejado de serlo. Nadie es inmune. Y en estos días, cualquiera armado con una computadora puede buscar y revelar un secreto de Estado.

La publicación de más de 250,000 documentos del Departamento de Estado estadounidense y cables diplomáticos de sus embajadas y consulados en todo el mundo nos permite inspeccionar el engranaje de la diplomacia de Estados Unidos. Lo que hace tan fascinantes estos documentos es el hecho de que podemos ver lo que está prohibido.

Este el sueño hecho realidad de cualquier voyeurista político. Al leer los documentos de WikiLeaks estamos ahí, sentados al lado del embajador, hablando con el primer ministro, con el líder de la oposición o con un general. Aunque no nos invitaron a la fiesta, podemos escuchar la música y ver a los invitados a través de la ventana. Y podemos escuchar sus conversaciones.

Por supuesto, muchos de esos cables y memorandos secretos están llenos de descripciones poco halagüeñas de líderes mundiales. Otros consisten en recomendaciones y proponen cambios de política; algunos revelan amenazas (veladas y no tanto); y hasta hay simples chismes después de una borrachera.

Pero todos tienen algo en común: ese tinte de autenticidad, de verdad. Como lector, uno se queda con la impresión de que las acciones y conversaciones resumidas en estos documentos son versiones no censuradas de lo que verdaderamente pasa entre políticos y diplomáticos -- no lo que se informa en los diarios, la televisión o Internet.

Y ésa es una diferencia importante, dado que asuntos inquietantes fueron revelados por WikiLeaks.

Algunos ejemplos: el temor del gobierno mexicano de “perder” territorio ante los narcos; las versiones de que espías cubanos están operando dentro del gobierno venezolano; y el peligro de que material nuclear en Pakistán pueda terminar en manos de terroristas.

Asuntos médicos también son revelados, como el supuesto tumor nasal del presidente de Bolivia, Evo Morales, y especulación acerca de la estabilidad emocional de la presidenta Cristina Fernández, de Argentina. Y hasta se mencionan rumores acerca de la forma de divertirse de los primeros ministros de Italia y de Kazajstán. Se detallan instrucciones a los diplomáticos estadounidenses para que obtengan los números de las tarjetas de crédito de altos funcionarios de las Naciones Unidas.

Este vistazo íntimo a los mundos privados de gente influyente no es algo que les agrade. Julian Assange, un australiano de 39 años fundador de WikiLeaks, se encuentra ya en la mira de los poderosos. Enfrenta acusaciones de ofensas sexuales en Suecia y fue arrestado sin derecho a libertad bajo fianza por un tribunal en Londres el 7 de diciembre. Assange niega las acusaciones, argumentando que son una represalia por el impacto que ha tenido WikiLeaks. Pero, pase lo que pase con Assange, el jarrón de cristal de la confidencialidad está roto y ya no hay manera de pegar todas sus partes.

Las revelaciones como las de WikiLeaks llenan un vacío. Los funcionarios públicos son, finalmente, empleados que deben responder a los ciudadanos y están obligados a dar cuenta de sus gastos y acciones.

Si no lo hacen voluntariamente, WikiLeaks (o alguien más) se encargará de hacerlo por ellos. ¿Es legal? Eso depende de las leyes de las naciones involucradas.

Pero sospecho que, en la misma forma en que Napster cambió la industria de la música en el 2000 al proponer que los MP3 debían ser gratis y compartidos en línea, WikiLeaks está cambiando la política mundial al demostrar que nada, ni los asuntos más confidenciales, deben ser mantenidos en secreto.

he recent stream of confidential American foreign policy documents revealed on WikiLeaks confirms we’re living in a world that’s more open and transparent than ever.

The simple function of WikiLeaks seems to be the new premise of the 21st century: Once published, nothing disappears. If something turns up on a computer screen, it’ll likely be saved somewhere. In this digital era, even an intimate text can become, with a mere mouse click, a public matter.

Future presidential candidates are disqualifying themselves from office today when, two or three decades from now, the provocative photos and statements they shamelessly, thoughtlessly post on Facebook and Twitter resurface.

Essentially, what we thought was private is no longer so. No one is immune. And these days, anyone armed with a computer can dig up and display a state secret.

The publication of more than 250,000 U.S. State Department documents and diplomatic cables from embassies and consulates worldwide allows us to inspect the internal gears of American diplomacy. What makes the documents intriguing is that we get to see what’s forbidden.

This is a dream come true for any political voyeur. When we read documents on WikiLeaks, we are there, seated next to an ambassador, speaking with the prime minister, the leader of the opposition or a general. Though we weren’t invited to the party, we can hear the music and see the guests through the window. We can listen in on the conversations.

Of course, many of the confidential cables and memos are full of unflattering descriptions of world leaders. Others feature advice and proposed policy changes. Some highlight threats (some veiled, some practically overt). Some are gossip following a drunken evening.

But they all have something in common: an air of authenticity, of truth. As a reader, one is left with the impression that the actions and conversations summarized within the documents are uncensored accounts of what happens between politicians and diplomats – as opposed to what’s reported in newspapers, on television or the Internet.

And that’s an important distinction, because worrisome issues have been revealed by WikiLeaks. Some examples: the Mexican government’s fear of losing territory to violent drug gangs, the allegations that Cuban spies are operating within the Venezuelan government and the fear that nuclear material in Pakistan might end up in terrorists’ hands.

Medical concerns also have been brought to light, such as the supposed nasal tumor of Bolivian President Evo Morales and speculation over the emotional stability of Argentine President Cristina Fernandez. Rumors about the heavypartying habits of the prime ministers of Italy and Kazakhstan have been reported. A directive for U.S. diplomats to collect the credit card numbers of U.N. officials have been detailed.

This intimate glimpse into the private worlds of influential people isn’t something that pleases them. Julian Assange, the 39-year-old Australian founder of WikiLeaks, has already found himself in the crosshairs of the powerful. He faces allegations of sex offenses in Sweden and was arrested and denied bail Dec. 7 by a court in London.

Assange denies the allegations, saying they’re a reprisal for the impact WikiLeaks has had. But regardless of what happens to Assange, the crystal bowl of secrecy has been shattered – and there’s no way to put it back together.

Even if Assange and WikiLeaks disappear, others will surely follow in Assange’s steps. Why? Because there’s an urgent need for more transparency with regard to the actions of governments – especially in Latin America. I would like to know, for example, why so many former presidents and top-level government officials in Mexico end their elected tenures as multimillionaires, because the rather modest salaries for officials cannot lead to such wealth. How did they manage to amass their fortunes? I’m sure the answer is hidden in some government computer – all that’s needed is the click of an informer to reveal all.

WikiLeaks-type disclosures fill a void. Public officials are, after all, employees answerable to the people, and it’s their duty to disclose their expenses and actions. If they don’t do it voluntarily, WikiLeaks (or someone else) will do it for them.

Is it legal? That depends on the laws of the nations involved. But I suspect that, in the same way that Napster changed the music industry in 2000 when it insisted MP3s should be free and shared online, WikiLeaks is changing world politics by insisting that nothing, not even the most confidential of matters, should be kept secret.

We’re living in the connected, interdependent “global village” foreseen by author Marshall McLuhan half a century ago. Of course, the walls around the village are becoming more transparent – and now, no one can hide behind them.

ablar con los niños, mostrar interés en sus actividades y escucharles va un largo trecho hacia la consolidación de su individualidad y alienta su desarrollo, según Randy Callstrom, Director Ejecutivo de PACES, agencia con base en el condado Wyandotte que brinda servicio a niños y adolescentes que enfrentan cuestiones emocionales y del comportamiento.

“Es importante que los padres dejen que sus hijos sepan que los aman y que pasen tiempo con ellos”, indicó.

Callstrom, quien ha trabajado en salud mental infantil por más de 25 años, dijo que los padres deben estar atentos de los momentos en que los chicos quieren hablar — por ejemplo, a la hora de dormir o en el coche.

“Hablen con sus hijos cada día — y conversen sobre lo que sea que quieran discutir”, refirió. “Hacer esto muestra a los niños y adolescentes que ustedes están interesados en ellos, sus actividades y sus vidas”.

Para alentar una comunicación abierta, los padres deben pasar tiempo con sus hijos. Callstrom sugiere hacer tiempo para una actividad uno-a-uno con el niño una o dos veces a la semana, proteger ese tiempo y no cambiar de planes. Él recomienda permitir la independencia y reafirmación personal apropiada a la edad, pero cree que los padres deben establecer límites a sus hijos y decir “no” cuando sea necesario. Esto requiere ser consistente con las reglas, expectativas y disciplina; evitar palizas y gritos; y enseñarles a los niños las formas apropiadas de manejar las frustraciones.

“Los padres se sienten mejor cuando sirven de un buen ejemplo para sus hijos y permanecen calmados aún cuando los niños pudieran no estarlo”, comentó.

Callstrom indicó que los niños aprenden imitando y observarán cómo reaccionan los padres ante el enojo o una situación frustrante e imitan sus comportamientos.

Ellos también aprenden tomando sus propias decisiones y se les debe permitir hacerlo mientras las consecuencias no sean peligrosas o dañinas para ellos u otros. Por ello, también es importante enseñarles a pensar antes de actuar, agregó.

“La crianza de los hijos es un trabajo duro, pero también tiene muchísimas recompensas. Los padres deben ser realistas sobre las expectativas de sí mismos como padres, o sus esposos o compañeros y de sus hijos. Pero lo primero y más importante, dejen que los niños sepan que los aman y que se preocupan por ellos”, concluyó.

“It’s important for parents to let their kids know that they love them,” Callstrom said, “and to spend time with the kids.”

Callstrom, who has worked in children’s mental health for more than 25 years, said parents should watch for times when kids like to talk — for example, at bedtime or in the car.

“Talk with your kids every day — and have conversations about whatever they want to discuss,” he said. “Doing this shows children and teens that you are interested in them, their activities and their lives.”

To encourage open communication, parents must spend time with their children. Callstrom suggests making time for a one-on-one activity with a child once or twice a week, safeguarding that time as special and not changing plans.

Callstrom recommends allowing for ageappropriate independence and assertiveness, but believes parents should set limits for their kids and say “no” when necessary. This requires being consistent about rules, expectations and disciplines; avoiding spanking and yelling; and teaching kids the appropriate ways to handle their frustrations.

“Parents do best when they serve as good role models for their kids,” Callstrom said, “and keep calm even when their kids might not be.”

Callstrom said kids learn by imitating and will watch for how a parent reacts to anger or a frustrating situation and mimic their behaviors. They also learn by making their own choices and should be allowed to do this as long as the consequences aren’t dangerous or harmful to them or others. Because of this, it’s also important to teach kids to think before they act, Callstrom added.

“Parenting is hard work, but it also has tremendous rewards,” he said. “Parents should be realistic about expectations of themselves as parents, of their spouses or partners and of their kids. But first and foremost, let your kids know that you love them and that you care about them.”

ichard G. “OO” Mendez, 64, of Kansas City, Kan., died Dec. 7.

Visitation was Sunday (Dec. 12) at Maple Hill Funeral Home, where the rosary was said. Funeral services were Monday (Dec. 13) at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church, followed by burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

He was born to John and Soledad Mendez on Feb. 12, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo., and lived in Kansas City, Kan.’s Argentine area.

Simon R. Urbina, 83, of Kansas City, Kan., died Dec. 9 peacefully at home in the company of his loving wife of 63 years and family.

Visitation was Monday (Dec. 13) at McGilley Midtown Chapel in Kansas City, Mo., where the rosary was prayed. The Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday (Dec. 14) in All Saints (St. Joseph/St. Benedict) Church in Kansas City, Kan., followed by burial in the Mount Calvary Cemetery and Chapel Mausoleum in Kansas City, Kan. He was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Chicago. He was married to Catalina Guerrero on Aug. 23, 1947, and had three children. He was employed by the Williams Meat Co. for more than 25 years and then as a banquet waiter at Westin Crown Center, where he retired. He also was a musician with the J-5 Band and with Chito and the Latiniers.

Survivors include Catalina, his wife; and his children, Sylvia Urbina, Rita Hernandez (wife of Nick Jr.) and Mario Urbina (husband of Delphina).

Other survivors include five grandchildren, Lisa Moran (wife of Tony), Victor G. Vasquez Jr., Cassandra Urbina (wife of Joe), Rachel Davila (wife of Leeroy) and Mario Urbina Jr.; and 11 greatgrandchildren, Anthony, Jose, Domnic, Hannah, Evelyn, Andy, Jacob, Matthew, Leeroy, Gabriella and Miah. Still other survivors include two sisters, Juanita Diaz and Marina Cordero; one brother, Vincent Cordero; and many nieces and nephews.

l 3 de Dic. a partir de las 5:30 p.m., en la plaza R.R. Osborne del palacio Municipal de Olathe, se llevó a cabo la ceremonia de encendido del árbol de Navidad presidida por el alcalde de la ciudad Michael Copeland, quien junto con sus hijas y el reconocido meteorólogo Joe Lauría, encendieron el abeto azul de 18 pies de altura.

Coros y grupos musicales de las diferentes escuelas del Distrito Escolar de Olathe y de la Universidad Mid America Nazaren, la orquesta y banda cívica de la ciudad, así como el coro de Trails West Barber Shop amenizaron el evento.

Además de la comida y bebidas que se ofrecieron, hubo varias actividades para los niños que incluyeron la visita de Santa Claus, quien llegó a bordo de un camión de bomberos y después estuvo escuchando los deseos de los pequeños, que aprovecharon para tomarse la tradicional foto con él.

Los alumnos del programa de artes culinarias de la escuela Olathe North presentaron una figura de hielo representativa de la época.

s we approach the busy holiday season, I have put together a top 10 rules of the road for drivers, in the event you’re pulled over by the police.

You can bet the police will be out in full force looking for drunk drivers. The following are rules to live by in the event you find yourself behind the wheel and looking into the face of Mr. Johnny Law: 1. Make sure your vehicle is properly insured and registered. Fines for driving without insurance are typically around $350 for a first offense.

2. Make sure all your lights work on your vehicle.

The police always use the “broken taillight” excuse as a legal justification for pulling you over. Once you have been pulled over, the officer can then ask you for additional documentation, including proof of insurance, your license and proof of proper registration.

3. Always be courteous and polite. Nine times out of 10, the officer will be less harsh on you as a traffic violator if you treat him or her with respect.

4. If you’re not a legal resident of the United States, never admit this fact. In Missouri, law enforcement can arrest you if you’re not a legal resident. Always remain silent if the officer asks you whether you are a legal resident of the country. Tell him or her you wish to talk to an attorney first.

5. STOP TEXTING AND DRIVING AND SLOW DOWN! This is almost as bad as drinking and driving, in my opinion. It only takes a split second for an accident to occur. Your opportunity to prevent that accident from occurring will be lost if you’re more worried about your insignificant text message than you are about keeping your eyes on the road. You can receive a ticket for texting and driving.

6. Do not drive if you’ve been drinking. Remember to honor and value the lives around you and on the road. Countless deaths this holiday will be prevented if we all remember to follow this Golden Rule.

7. Make sure all your children are properly secured in your vehicle. Children are our most precious resource. Protect them at all times.

8. Know the weather forecast and take the steps necessary to ensure your safety. In the Midwest, our weather changes on a daily basis.

9. Make sure your car is ready for the harsh winter. It is a good idea to winterize your vehicle – i.e., new tires, battery check, antifreeze and washer fluid. No one wants to be stuck on the highway in subzero temperatures. This gives the police another reason to check all your papers.

10. WEAR YOUR SEATBELT — SAVE A LIFE! In some areas, even a passenger can get ticketed for not wearing a seat belt.

KCRT presents “A Christmas Carol” live KCRT presenta “Un Cuento de Navidad” en vivo

l sábado (18 de Dic.) a las 8 p.m., el teatro Kansas City Repertory (KCRT) presentará “Un Cuento de Navidad” con una traducción simultánea en el teatro Spencer, ubicado en el campus de la Universidad de Missouri-Kansas City en 4949 Cherry St. en Kansas City, Mo. Basado en la historia de Charles Dickens, “Un Cuento de Navidad” relata la historia de Ebenezer Scrooge, un hombre enojón con mucho poder y dinero. Un día, tres fantasmas de Navidad lo llevan en un viaje por diversas experiencias que lo ayudan a encontrarse a sí mismo y volverse una persona mejor.

La transmisión simultánea en inglés y español será ofrecida gratuitamente.

Según Sara Rodríguez, “Un Cuento de Navidad” es un entretenimiento familiar grandioso. “ ‘Un Cuento de Navidad’ es una de las mejores producciones (teatrales) y todas las personas deberían venir”, dijo.

“Mi esposo y yo traducimos todas las voces en la obra. La presentación se lleva a cabo en el escenario – y al mismo tiempo, nosotros estamos dentro de una cabina de audio haciendo la traducción”, informó Sara, una de las traductoras en español de la obra.

La colombiana de nacimiento comenzó a trabajar en la obra hace cuatro años.

“Este tipo de presentaciones son muy importantes para toda nuestra comunidad porque no es tan fácil … (para ellos) tener acceso a este tipo de arte”, comentó.

Según ella, la producción de KCRT se ha vuelto popular más allá del área de Kansas City.

“Yo me siento realmente orgullosa de ser parte de este proyecto”, explicó.

According to Sara Rodriguez, “A Christmas Carol” is great family entertainment. “ ‘A Christmas Carol’ is one of the best (theatrical) productions and all the people should come,” Rodriguez said.

“My husband and I translate all the voices in the play. The performance takes place on stage – and at the same time, we are inside of an audio booth doing the translation,” said Rodriguez, one of two Spanish translators for the play.

The native Colombian started working on the play four years ago.

According to Rodriguez, the KCRT production has become popular beyond the Kansas City area.

de diciembre como parte de las exposiciones de ‘First Fridays’ (Viernes Primeros) en La Fonda El Taquito en Southwest Boulevard en Kansas City, Mo. El nativo del Distrito Federal de México ha dibujado desde que era un niño.

“Yo he estado dibujando por más de 20 años. Hasta recuerdo que cuando era niño pintaba en las paredes de mi casa”, refirió.

Rodrigo se especializa en la pintura y dibujo de detalles humanos que incluyen cara, ojos y manos en blanco y negro. También dibuja caricaturas. Él no tiene una capacitación formal en pintura o dibujo. Todo lo que utiliza en su arte lo ha aprendido con años de experimentación. Sin embargo, una de sus metas es estudiar diseño gráfico y continuar dibujando.

Su inspiración generalmente proviene de lo que ve.

“Yo me inspiro con cualquier cosa que me gusta y que considero interesante”, explicó.

Su exposición se llama “Power of Black” (El Poder del Negro). La exhibición presenta varios dibujos de humanos y una pequeña colección de caricaturas llamada “Freak-Toons”.

Rodrigo creó los personajes de la colección estrictamente de su imaginación.

“Yo ni siquiera sé lo que estaba pensando”, dijo.

“Simplemente comencé a dibujar y todos los personajes surgieron”.

El Taquito on Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Mo. A native of Mexico’s Federal District, Diaz has drawn since he was a kid.

“I have been drawing for more than 20 years.

I even remember when I was a kid I used to paint the walls in my house,” Diaz said.

Diaz specializes in painting and drawing human details, including the face, eyes and hands in black and white. He also draws cartoons.

Diaz doesn’t have any formal drawing or painting training. Everything he uses in his art he has learned from years of experimenting.

However, one of his goals is to study graphic design and continue drawing.

Diaz’s inspiration generally comes from what he sees.

“I get inspired by anything I like and I consider interesting,” Diaz explained.

Diaz’s exhibit is called “Power of Black.” The exhibit features several drawings of humans and a small collection of cartoons called “Freak-Toons.” Diaz created the characters in the “Freak-Toons” collection strictly from his imagination.

“I don’t even know what I was thinking,” he said. “I just started drawing and all the characters came out.”

Although the art in the exhibition isn’t for sale, Diaz will create art for those who commission him.

“I will draw whatever they ask me, and I can sell it,” Diaz said.

For Diaz, the purpose of selling his art is to help him attend college and get an education.

Diaz considers his collection unimaginable.

“I think people are going to see something they don’t expect to see,” Diaz said. “It is incredible to see what you can draw with a simple piece of graphite.”

Cuando leí este estudio me rasqué la cabeza, lo analicé y pensé: ¡no estoy de acuerdo con este doctor! Pues conozco doctoras que sólo quieren tener sexo cuando se alinean los planetas. A la misma vez, sé de madres dedicadas al hogar que son dinamita en la recámara.

La sexualidad de una mujer no tiene que ver con su profesión, más bien con la opinión que tenga de sí misma. De acuerdo al valor que se dé, será la manera en la que se exprese a la hora de hacer el amor. Puedes ser una abogada muy temida que gana todos los pleitos en la Corte, pero si no te sientes atractiva y digna de ser amada, perderás cualquier caso en la cama.

Por otro lado, si eres una ama de casa con una alta autoestima y estás consciente de que vales mucho como mujer, disfrutarás del sexo entre las sábanas de tu alcoba o sobre la mesa de tu cocina.

The KCKHA has available up to 200 units of PBS for existing units in multifamily developments. The KCKHA is interested in existing developments located within the City of Kansas City, Kansas nonpoor and non-minority areas and currently not receiving PBS. If interested, one-page applications are available now, and will be accepted at the KCKHA offices beginning on December 20, 2010 to January 31, 2011, or until available vouchers are exhausted. Funding will be made available per the criteria established in the Project Based Subsidy Program.
