l 10 de Feb., Hosni Mubarak anunció su renuncia a la presidencia egipcia. El vicepresidente egipcio Omar Sulaiman anunció en televisión que la renuncia de Mubarak era una solución adoptada debido a las circunstancias que estaba enfrentando el país. La renuncia sucedió después de varias protestas en la calles del pueblo egipcio. Poco antes de ésta, Mubarak había anunciado que no se retiraría. Sin embargo, las protestas lo forzaron a hacerlo. Varios analistas políticos han explicado que la rebelión es una consecuencia de la pobreza que afecta a Egipto. Según estadistas de la O.N.U., Egipto tiene alrededor de 17 millones de personas viviendo en la pobreza. En reacción a la renuncia. el presidente de EE.UU. n Feb. 10, Hosni Mubarak announced his resignation of the O Egyptian presidency. Egyptian Vice President Omar Sulaiman announced on television
that Mubarak’s resignation was a solution adopted because of the circumstances Egypt was facing. The resignation followed repeated street protests by the Egyptian people. Shortly before the resignation, Mubarak had announced he wouldn’t resign. However, the protests forced him to do so. Several political analysts have explained that the rebellion is a consequence of the poverty affecting Egypt. According to U.N. statistics, Egypt has around 17 million people living in poverty. In reaction to the resignation, U.S. President Barack Obama released a statement to the media. “The Egyptian government must put forward a credible, concrete and unequivocal path toward genuine democracy, and they have not yet seized that opportunity,” Obama said. “We, therefore, urge the Egyptian government to move swiftly to explain the changes that have been made – and to spell out in clear and unambiguous language the step-by-step process that will lead to democracy and the representative governmentPAGE that 2A> (the) Egyptian people seek.” PAGE 2A>

After hearing testimony from supporters and opponents on Feb. 8 and 9, the 23-member House Federal and State Affairs Committee voted on Feb. 10 to recommend House Bill 2006 for passage. It will go to the full House for debate. If approved, the measure would repeal a law passed in 2004 that allows some students in the country illegally to pay the lower in-state tuition rate at state colleges and universities. Introduced on Jan. 10 with 25 sponsors, the bill isn’t the first attempt to overturn the 2004 law. In 2005, 24 out-of-state students paying non-resident tuition to attend the University of Kansas (KU) sued in federal district court (Day v. Sebelius). They challenged the legality of a law that gives taxpayer-supported tuition benefits to unauthorized immigrants that are denied to U.S. citizens. A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit, ruling that the plaintiffs had failed to prove the law had injured them. The judge’s decision was upheld in the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. After Mubarak’s resignation, the Egyptian military took over the country. The military announced that establishing a new government would take around six months. Aly Meleis, an Egyptian citizen who lives in New York, said conditions in Egypt had been difficult for 30 years. “Now, the Egyptians (have) got back their freedom,” he said. “They are fighting for their rights, which weren’t available in the days of Mubarak. We are ready to do something serious for our country. (The) youth are very excited to build a new Egypt.” Meleis hopes to be part of the new Egypt. He plans to return to Egypt, establish himself and have a family.

Luis received a phone call informing him he was a program candidate. According to Laura, Fry then examined her son and told him he was eligible for free orthodontic care. “When the doctor told us that Luis was a winner, I felt blessed and excited. It is important that these kinds of programs continue existing,” she said. Luis, who started his treatment in May 2010, is near the end of his treatment. “My son’s life (has) had a huge change,” his mother said. “Now, I see him smiling all the time, and I think he feels more secure about himself. I feel his self esteem is up.” The Reyes family is grateful to Fry “for all the things he has done for us,” Laura said. “Smile for a Lifetime has changed my life,” Luis said. “I’m a new person, and I feel very happy.” Smile for a Lifetime has four application periods. The first period deadline is March 31. The second period deadline is June 30. The third period deadline is Sept. 30. The final period deadline is Dec. 31. greet with constituents hosted by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona. The 20-year-old University of Arizona student had joined the congresswoman’s staff as an intern just days earlier. As residents queued up to speak to Giffords outside the Tucson supermarket, a gunman opened fire. Giffords was among nearly two dozen people wounded during the attack, sustaining a grave head wound. The story of how Hernandez responded is well-known. Calling on the certified nursing assistant training he’d received as a star student in high school, Hernandez helped save Giffords’ life. Hernandez’s actions have been repeatedly described as “quick, competent and deliberate” and his manner as calm and reassuring. Hernandez knew what to do and had confidence in his ability to do it because he’d assiduously taken in his instructors’ lessons. By dint of that, Giffords was comforted during the dreadful moments following the attack and is alive and recovering. Alesaundra Tafoya’s parents began instructing their 3-year-old daughter about safety early on. During strolls around their Manteca, Calif., community, the parents pointed out fire stations as safe havens if the toddler were ever in trouble. In August 2010, Alesaundra and her dad Frank were watching television alone at home when Frank lost consciousness. Unable to rouse him, Alesaundra walked to the firehouse two blocks away and guided firefighters back to her home. Rescuers said Alesaundra’s quick thinking and knowing how to find prompt medical attention had saved her dad’s life. Many of the storybooks that Nathan Neville’s parents read to him teach safety. In September 2009 as the family slept, a fire started. The smoke awakened Nathan. Recalling the lessons from his bedtime stories, the 5-yearold calmly proceeded to his parents’ bedroom and woke them. Their home in Saskatchewan, Canada, sustained extensive damage, but thanks to Nathan’s emergency readiness and clearheaded composure, the family escaped injury, including the pets. When he turned 5 years old in 2006, C.J. Murphy of Fairhaven, Mass., began taking swimming lessons. Seven months into his instruction, the boy learned lifesaving techniques. Fortunately for his 73-year-old grandfather, Louis Carreiro, Murphy paid close attention. Two weeks later, the intrepid youngster “quickly and capably” saved Carreiro from drowning after he had collapsed in the family swimming pool. Daniel, Alesaundra, Nathan and C.J. share a commonality characterized by valor, common sense, practicality, good judgment, quick reflexes and integrity. On the surface, they may have questioned the relevance of instruction of teachers or parents. That’s understandable. At one time, we might’ve encountered a lesson that at first seemed devoid of practical application. And what parent hasn’t responded to a child’s grumbling about being forced to study a subject whose value and real-world applicability eludes them? ASHINGTON – El 11 de Feb., el presidente Obama se reunió con 15 líderes latinos en el salón Roosevelt de la Casas Blanca, para discutir asuntos que son importantes para la comunidad hispana y para todos los estadounidenses. Altos funcionarios de la Casa Blanca como la secretaria del Trabajo Hilda Solís, el secretario del Interior Ken Salazar y el secretario de Educación Arne Duncan, se unieron al Presidente. ASHINGTON – On Feb. 11, President Obama met with 15 Latino leaders in the Roosevelt Room at the White House, to discuss issues that are important to the Hispanic community and all Americans. White House senior officials, including Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, joined the president. Latino leaders in attendance included Kansas City area native Janet Murguia, leader of the National Council of La Raza; former U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros; former U.S. Department of Energy official Joe Garcia; and U.S. Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, Congressional Hispanic Caucus chair. The president reiterated his vision for the future and the important role Latinos will play in ensuring the United States can out-innovate, out-educate and out-build its global competitors in the 21st century. He also reiterated his commitment to reforming U.S. immigration laws to help build a thriving economy. During the meeting, participants also discussed the Obama administration’s key achievements over the past two years and the impact they’ve made on Latinos, including addressing healthcare- and educationrelated issues. It was pointed out that Latinos have the highest rate of uninsured people and the highest high school dropout rate. The president and Latino leaders agreed to continue to work to raise awareness in the Hispanic community on how the changes the administration has made will affect Latinos.

he Egyptian revolution of the past few days should serve as a lesson to all governments: If you fail to provide basic rights and opportunities to your citizens, then they will revolt. We Americans should learn from the courage and determination of the Egyptians. Although we live in the freest and most prosperous nation in the world, America is far from perfect. We must expect better from our government and demand comprehensive immigration reform. Immigration reform is about granting basic, civil rights to people. It’s about ensuring a fair, legal way for millions of people to obtain the American dream of opportunity and prosperity. Immigration made this country what it is: the world’s richest, most powerful nation. People immigrate to this country to have a better life. No one can fault another man or woman for trying to provide a better life for themselves and their family members. For many, it’s not a choice to come here illegally; it’s a necessity. The problem is that too many people in this country cannot relate to the immigrant. They have never walked in their shoes, nor felt their poverty and despair. Until more of our citizens and government leaders become compassionate and caring, our immigration laws will never be fixed, and the number of undocumented immigrants will increase. Millions in Egypt rose up and demanded democracy and basic civil rights because they wanted a better country for themselves and their children. We Americans would be wise to learn some lessons from the Egyptians. Their struggle is something that many Americans take for granted. Most of the 10-15 million undocumented immigrants in this country are here to make a better life. Our country will infinitely benefit from legalizing them. as revoluciones en México, China, Cuba y Nicaragua se hicieron con armas. Las de hoy, con celulares y la Internet. El orden político del siglo XXI está siendo transformado por las nuevas tecnologías, conforme los pueblos oprimidos que desean libertad, igualdad y trato justo han encontrado formas nuevas de expresar esos anhelos como nunca antes. Han pasado ya los tiempos en que la censura oficial podía prohibir lo que se presentaba en la televisión y los diarios -- los dictadores no pueden silenciar a oponentes que están organizados en Twitter y Facebook. Las revoluciones que hemos visto en Egipto y en Túnez no podrían haber ocurrido hace unos años, cuando la mayoría de los ciudadanos en esos países no tenía teléfono celular ni acceso a computadoras. Pero el mes pasado, el gobierno del presidente tunecino Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali no pudo frenar las protestas coordinadas mediante textos y tweets. Tu v o q u e huir del país, y el presidente egipcio Hosni Mubarak se enfrenta ahora a un movimiento similar de raíces populares. En Egipto, los manifestantes también han logrado videograbar casos de abusos y brutalidad mediante sus teléfonos celulares y compartirlos con sitios sociales de la Red como Facebook, que es el segundo sitio más visitado en Egipto, después de Google. Una cosa es clara, sin embargo: verdaderamente estamos más conectados que nunca antes. En Estados Unidos, uno de los países más conectados del mundo, 93 de cada 100 estadounidenses son dueños de un celular, y cada uno envía un promedio de 6,000 mensajes de texto anualmente, según una encuesta del periódico USA Today. El avance es vertiginoso. Crecí en un México donde había que esperar muchos años para que se instalara un teléfono en una casa. Y mi hijo Nicolás, de 12 años, no se puede imaginar que en mi universidad no había computadoras. Por mucho tiempo me resistí a tener contestador, fax y beeper. Pero me clavé por completo cuando salieron los primeros celulares. Pocas veces me separo del mío. Duerme junto a mí. Lo justifico al decir que quiero estar siempre disponible para mis hijos. Aunque es algo casi adictivo. Y no soy el único. Hace poco estaba haciendo fila en un restaurante y ocho de las 17 personas que esperaban -- las conté -- estaban usando su celular, a pesar de estar acompañados. El mensaje que estaban enviando era clarísimo: preferían hablar con alguien que estaba lejos que con la persona que los acompañaba. De hecho, hay gente en este país que se siente desnuda si no tiene su teléfono en la mano. No hay un solo momento del día en que, de alguna manera, estemos alejados de un aparato electrónico. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo la nuestra es una sociedad muy distraída. Piense en esto: Antes se consideraba una grosería sacar el celular en una reunión social. Ya no. Todos lo hacen. El celular es, para muchos, como otra parte de su cuerpo. Y a pesar de las nuevas leyes, todo el tiempo veo a gente hablando, o texteando, por sus celulares mientras maneja, igual en Los Angeles y Nueva York que en Miami. They will be the ďŹ rst generation to attend college, so they don’t have an older sibling or family member to help with college plans like we had,â€? Avila said, speaking for all the mentors, who are fellow area professionals. “We’re trying to guide them.â€? Representing MANA de Kansas City as the organization’s new vice president for membership, Avila is visiting area high schools, promoting the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Scholarship program, assisting with applications, reviewing essays and offering support and encouragement. “We do anything we can to help them apply so they have a chance to be awarded the monies,â€? she said. For the past few years, Avila has served on the committee evaluating scholarship applications and volunteered with the annual banquet beneďŹ tting the scholarship fund. A former National Honor Society member herself and active in high school activities and community service projects, Avila said education, civic engagement and being involved provide the means to get ahead, but “unfortunately, there are too few Latino role models.â€? As a third year law student at the DePaul University College of Law, Avila took the opportunity during a yearlong immigration clinic to work on Violence Against Women Act cases. It’s a special area of immigration law she continues to practice. “They’re very sad cases, often involving someone who’s already been in a shelter,â€? Avila said. “They’re people very much in need.â€? The younger of two daughters born to Guatemalan immigrants, Avila works her asset of bilingual uency to enlighten through her professional and humanitarian service. “I try to do my best for the clients and my community,â€? she said.

Angel: Don’t focus too much on whether there are other Latinos on campus. You want to feel like you belong, but you also want to get out of your comfort zone, so that you can grow in new ways. Ask schools about diversity y-in programs, if you can’t afford to visit schools outside your area. These programs cover the expenses for students to visit a campus. Maria: How do students know when going away to school is the right thing for them? Angel: Students need to ďŹ nd the right balance where they are far enough away from, but also close enough to family and friends. It’s about asking yourself, “What is the amount of space that I need to grow as a person and focus on my studies?â€? At home, there are sometimes too many distractions and family demands that make focusing on school very challenging. Maria: To this day, I still regret that my parents did not allow me to apply to out-of-state schools. No doubt, most Latino parents have reservations about letting their sons or daughters study away from home. It’s hard for a parent to trust that their 17-year-old knows what they want and need in life. By now, kids know what environment they need to do well academically. The award was given to honor Petersen’s work in establishing and leading the Keeler Women’s Center in Kansas City, Kan., which is sponsored by the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kan. “The Zonta Woman of Achievement Award is given to a woman in the metropolitan area who has made a difference in the lives of women through her profession or in community service,� said Dawna Adams-Davis, who presented the award. “The committee of six women, from the three active metro area Zonta clubs, recognized that the mission of Sister Carol Ann and the Keeler Women’s Center – that of empowering women in the urban core of Kansas City through education, advocacy, personal and spiritual development – was a perfect match.� Petersen called it “an honor to receive such a prestigious award by an organization whose mission so closely parallels Keeler Women’s center’s mission of empowering women.� Zonta, of which Earhart was a member, is a global organization that seeks to advance women’s status worldwide through service and advocacy.

Don’t let them get you down!
No permitas que te mortifiquen
D
iariamente ayudo a la gente a empezar s u día con positivismo por medio de mi página de Facebook donde escribo “Tu Dosis Diaria de Motivación”. La semana pasada escribí la siguiente dosis: “Cuando alguien te mortifique, no le des el gusto de verte enojado. La indiferencia es el arma más poderosa contra aquel que tiene la misión de hacerte la vida imposible”. Me quedé “boquiabierta” cuando vi que este mensaje rompió el récord entre comentarios y “Likes”. La reacción del público me motivó a retocar el tema. Todos en algún momento pasamos un mal rato con alguien conflictivo. Peor aún, hay quienes tienen que lidiar con seres insoportables a diario, bien sea la suegra entrometida, el vecino envidioso, el compañero de trabajo chismoso o la ex pareja celosa. Reconoce que estas personas nunca cambian. Una vez lo aceptes, tu nivel de tolerancia aumentará. Tienes dos opciones: o te alejas por completo o aprendes a lidiar con la persona. Si no te puedes alejar, sigue estos consejos ¡y no permitas que te mortifiquen! *No tomes personal su actitud. Esa persona te mortifica porque está infeliz consigo mismo y no soporta ver a otros felices. Fíjate que son muchos a quienes les hace la vida “de cuadritos”. Su comportamiento refleja su propia desdicha, ¡compréndelo! *Mantén la calma. No te involucres en una discusión. No llegarás a ningún acuerdo. ¿Alguna vez has visto que en medio de una disputa, alguien diga: “¡tienes razón!”, por supuesto que no. En vez de discutir, dile: “cuando estés calmado, conversamos”. Si esta proposición crea más tensión, no te acobardes y vuelve a repetir lo mismo. De esta manera, el agresor se da cuenta que para hablar contigo, primero tiene que tranquilizarse. *Aprende a poner límites. Como dice el dicho “un abusador abusa, hasta que el abusado lo permite”. No dejes que te intimide. Por ejemplo: la primera vez que alguien te levante la voz, es el momento de exigir que jamás lo vuelva a hacer; o la primera ocasión en que la suegra “se meta” en tu matrimonio, pídele inmediatamente que respete tu privacidad. *Aplica la ley del hielo. ¡Sé frío con quien te hostiga! Deja de darle importancia. Tu atención es lo que engrandece su posición. Un adversario mide su poder de acuerdo a la efectividad de sus ataques y burlas. Por eso, entre menos caso le hagas, menos poder le das. Ese mismo día que publiqué la dosis de motivación tan comentada en la mañana, decidí escribir en la noche en mi muro de Facebook: “Cuando te quieran hacer la vida difícil, vence esa batalla de agresividad con amor. the satisfaction of getting mad. Indifference is the best weapon to wield against someone trying to ruin your life.” I was stunned to discover that message broke the record for most comments on my page. The strong reaction it got made me want to explore that topic more. Everybody must deal with difficult people sometimes. Worse yet, some of us must deal with them daily, whether it’s an overbearing mother-in-law, a nosy neighbor, an annoying co-worker or a jealous ex-boyfriend. Accept that they won’t change. Once you do, your tolerance will increase. You have two choices: cut off all contact with them or learn how to deal with them. If you can’t cut off the person, follow these tips and don’t let them get to you: *Don’t take it personally: They try to get under your skin because they’re not happy with themselves and can’t stand to see anybody else happy. Notice how they like to get a rise out of lots of people, not just you. Their behavior is a reflection of their misery. *Stay calm: Don’t get sucked into an argument. Nothing good will come of it. During the middle of a heated fight, have you ever seen anybody say, “Gee, I guess you’re right”? Of course not! Instead of arguing, say: “We can talk about it when you’re calmer.” If that only increases the tension, don’t back down, just repeat it. That way, the difficult person you’re dealing with will eventually realize that he or she must calm down before you’ll engage in any discussion. *Learn to set limits: You teach people how to treat you. Don’t let yourself be intimidated. For example, the first time someone raises their voice to you, you should make it clear that person can never do that again; or the first time your mother-in-law butts into your marriage, tell her immediately she must respect your privacy. *Give them the cold shoulder: Put the freeze on whoever’s needling you! Don’t put any importance on it. Giving that person your attention is what gives that person power. An antagonist measures his or her strength by how effective his or her attacks and abuse are. So the less attention you give an antagonist, the less you empower that person. When I posted the “Daily Dose of Motivation” that got so much attention in the morning, later that evening, I wrote on my Facebook page wall: “When someone is making your life difficult, win the battle with kindness. Love will always win.”

l 23 de Feb., el grupo Defensores de los Inmigrantes Refugiados de Missouri (MIRA) y miembros de la comunidad hispana participarán en eventos destinados a beneficiar a la comunidad hispana de Missouri en la Cámara de Representantes en Jefferson City. MIRA presentará a representantes estatales un estudio sobre las percepciones que los habitantes de Missouri tienen sobre la inmigración, para que puedan entender mejor los asuntos de inmigración. “Hay un mal entendido (sobre los inmigrantes), y mucha gente no sabe qué cuestiones enfrentan los inmigrantes”, dijo Vanessa Crawford, Directora Ejecutiva de MIRA. También el 23 de Feb., un grupo de hispanos de Missouri se reunirá con legisladores estatales, otros funcionarios electos y el personal de varias agencias para educarlos sobre los asuntos que afectan a los hispanos. El grupo se ha presentado en Jefferson City durante los últimos 10 años. “Nosotros esperamos fortalecer nuestra relación con los dos senadores hispanos (estatales) (Chappelle-Nadal y Nieves) y el único representante, Talboy”, indicó Guillermo Rodríguez, miembro del grupo. “También presentaremos el caso en contra de un número de proyectos de ley que están siendo discutidos, como el HB 167”. MIRA will present a study about the perceptions Missourians have about immigration to state representatives, so they can better understand immigration issues. “There is a misunderstanding (about immigrants), and a lot of people don’t know what issues immigrants face,” said Vanessa Crawford, MIRA executive director. Also on Feb. 23, a group of Missouri Hispanics will meet with state legislators, other elected officials and various agency personnel to educate them about issues affecting Hispanics. The group has presented in Jefferson City for the past 10 years. “We expect (to) strengthen our relationship with the two Hispanic (state) senators (Chappelle-Nadal and Nieves) and the only representative, Talboy,” group member Guillermo Rodriguez said. “We also will present the case against a number of bills being discussed, such as House Bill 167.” If approved, House Bill 167 would present the state driving test only in English.

Los Yaquis de Ciudad Obregón le dieron a México su sexta corona en la historia en la Serie del Caribe realizada en República Dominicana, luego de vencer en su último duelo a Venezuela por 3-2. México reverdeció laureles porque no ganaba en la Serie del Caribe desde el triunfo de la novena de Mazatlán en el 2005, tras éxitos anteriores en 1976 (Naranjeros de Hermosillo), 1986 (Águilas de Mexicali) y 1996 y 2002 (Tomateros de Hermosillo). La novena de Ciudad Obregón perdía por 2-0, pero pudo remontar y al final Luís Ayala, relevista de lujo, cerró las puertas y logró el rescate más importante de la serie. México terminó con marca de 4-2, Puerto Rico y Dominicana con 3-3 mientras Venezuela con 2-4. “Yo no soy muy bueno para el béisbol, pero felicidades a todos los que juegan en todas las posiciones: pitcher, catcher, primera, segunda, tercera base y jardineros. El camino hacia la “oportunidad” de Lucas comenzó cuando llegó a Estados Unidos desde Argentina siendo un adolescente. Cuando se mudó con su familia al área de Kansas City, jugó fútbol en la preparatoria Shawnee Mission Northwest (Kan.) antes de jugar con el Colegio Comunitario del Condado Johnson (Kan.) y la Universidad Nazarena MidAmerica. También jugó para dos equipos semiprofesionales del área y profesionalmente con Minnesota Stars antes de unirse a los Cometas en el otoño del 2010. Jugar profesionalmente con el equipo de fútbol de salón de su ciudad le brinda un impulso emocional, dijo, debido a las responsabilidades que involucra. “Uno quiere ganar por su familia, sus amigos, la gente (en las gradas), la ciudad, la comunidad”, explicó. “Tengo mucha gente que … me ve y me apoya en todo lo que hago. Yo … tengo … toneladas de amigos y personas con las que juego fútbol y que sé … que darían cualquier cosa por poder representar a Kansas City”. Debido a sus responsabilidades, Lucas trata de hacer todo lo posible por ayudar a ganar a los Cometas cuando juega, refirió. A lo largo de los primeros 15 partidos de los Cometas, lo que él ha hecho es participar en 12 juegos y contribuir con 22 tiros; 10 puntos (tres goles de 3 puntos y 4 asistencias); y 9 bloqueos. El entrenador de los Cometas Kim Roentved cree que Lucas tendrá un mayor impacto en el equipo conforme vaya adquiriendo experiencia en el fútbol de salón profesional. Éstá claro para él que Lucas “tiene mucho talento”. “Él simplemente necesita utilizarlo en los lugares correctos”, comentó. “Y eso es en lo que hemos estado trabajando desde que llegó al campo (de entrenamiento)”.
