its partnership with the LIVESTRONG Foundation and the name of its soccer stadium, now called The LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

The announcement occurred at the stadium, which will seat more than 18,000 people.

“We want to improve lifestyles and (the) community in general,” said Robb Heineman, Sporting Kansas City coowner CEO. Cyclist Lance Armstrong founded the LIVESTRONG Foundation to help fight cancer. Armstrong, a seventime Tour de France champion, is a cancer survivor.

“Professional sports provide a powerful vehicle to effect positive change in the world. LIVESTRONG’s partnership with Sporting Club gives us an innovative opportunity to advance the cancer fight in this region and we are eager to get started,” a Sporting Kansas City press release quoted Armstrong as saying.

That’s why he considers it “a huge accomplishment” to be playing midfielder for the latest Comets franchise, the Missouri Comets.

“I’m really excited and really thankful for the opportunity,” Rodriguez said during a recent phone interview.

The partnership came together in about eight months. Heineman and Armstrong met a few times to discuss the possible benefits for the non-profit organization.

The partnership will result in a percentage of the stadium revenues going toward supporting the foundation.

“We want to get all the community involved, and KC is one of the most giving environments,” Sporting Kansas City co-owner Cliff Illig said.

ationwide, 3,273,000 high school seniors are preparing for spring graduation. Those going on to college have gotten through the admissions process. That typically means they’ve achieved a respectable ACT or SAT score, gathered recommendation letters, completed college applications and tendered satisfactory essays.

Some seniors will enroll in trade or technical schools.

Others may plan to enter the workforce full time or the military, volunteer or travel.

As they move on, 3,235,000 high school juniors will advance to take their places.

They’re not considering graduation this spring, but they are eyeing the future.

They’re considering what has been distant or unrelated to them: career and college.

It’s a uniquely exciting prospect. They’re taking the first step on the bridge from comparatively carefree adolescence to productive, fulfilling adulthood. The key is to undertake the journey thoughtfully – and with the same industry they’ve applied to their studies and extracurricular activities.

Whether the soon-to-be seniors have already chosen a career or not, it’s useful knowing what resources are available and going about the process systematically. A practical starting place is cataloging their natural talents, strengths and interests. Then, they should consider their work style, preferred level of social interaction, ideal workplace and work-to-life ratio, personality – introverted or extroverted – and how much money they want to make.

High schools, public libraries and the Internet offer career, college and workforce guidance through various helpful services. Schools schedule career-planning workshops and collegepreparation events, organize job shadowing, and register students for the ACT and SAT. They also administer career aptitude tests, furnish information about scholarships and student financial aid, assist with applications, and link students to outside resources.

Public library holdings include the latest editions of the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the Young Person’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, Career Guide to Industries, Guide to America’s Federal Jobs and ACT and SAT test prep books. Librarians can refer students to useful Web sites and other reference and circulating materials about choosing and preparing for college and a career.

On the Web, StudentScholarships.org lists scholarships for Missouri students, occupation and salary information in various industries, and tips for choosing a major. Scholarships.com regularly updates a database containing 2.7 million college scholarships and grants, offers financial aid resources, lists states’ higher education agencies, presents thumbnail sketches of the top colleges, offers tips for choosing the right college and more. HispanicFund.org; the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s Web site, CHCI. org; FastWeb.com; and LatinoCollegeDollars. org are among the online sites offering career advice and scholarship and grant information for Hispanics.

Here’s where thinking outside the box will pay off. It’s become a post-industrial information age truism that tomorrow’s best jobs don’t exist yet. Tomorrow’s workforce can press ahead of the curve by anticipating or at least staying alert to developing trends. Practically speaking, there are many ways students can prime themselves to become occupational trend-spotters or trend-setters. Volunteering, job-shadowing, interning and drawing on a mentor’s expertise are advantageous and accessible.

Here are further considerations. Hispanics are underrepresented in careers projected to be in high demand through the next decade. Those include registered nurses, accountants and auditors, doctors and surgeons, pharmacists, lawyers, computer systems analysts and teachers.

Finally, think long-ranging and wide-ranging.

The transferability of skills in an ever-changing global economy reinforces income security.

o s legisladores de Kansas votaron recientemente para posponer indefinidamente un proyecto de ley de inmigraciĂłn escrito al estilo de la controversial ley SB 1070 de Arizona, que fue aprobada en el 2010.

De ser aprobado, el proyecto de ley darĂ­a a los oďŹ ciales encargados del orden pĂşblico el derecho de veriďŹ car el estatus de residencia de la persona si se sospecha que estĂĄ ilegalmente en Kansas.

Tony Weigel, Presidente de AILA, dijo que era “un hecho enorme que este tipo de proyectos de ley estĂĄn enfrentando tanta diďŹ cultadâ€? como lo es en el principio, especialmente dado que el secretario de Estado de Kansas Kris Kobach ha tenido meses para conseguir que fuera aprobada. ansas l a w makers voted recently to indefinitely table an immigration reform bill written in the style of Arizona’s controversial Senate Bill 1070, which was passed in 2010.

If approved, the bill would give law enforcement ofďŹ cers the right to check a person’s resident status if that person is suspected of being in Kansas illegally.

Opponents are relieved, but not celebratory. “Committee members sponsoring the bill are probably going to try to prop it up with some amendments, oat it on some balloons,â€? said Angela Ferguson, chair of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Advocacy Committee. “They’re going to keep working with this legislation.â€?

Tony Weigel, AILA chairman, said it was “a huge deal that this kind of bill is facing as much difďŹ cultyâ€? as it is early on, especially given that Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach has had months to work on getting it approved.

Elected as secretary of state in 2010, Kobach is a known proponent of harsher immigration laws.

In early 2010, he drew national attention by helping to author Arizona Senate Bill 1070. He designed and introduced Kansas’ immigration proposal based on the success of that bill.

In related news, the University of MissouriKansas City School of Law recently hosted a public debate between Weigel and Kobach.

Kobach argued for tougher state immigration reform laws, but Weigel saw a aw in his argument. “If you’re true to his theory, you get tough on people who are here illegally and they’ll selfdeport,â€? Weigel said. “But all 50 states would need to have equally rigid laws. It’s like air in a balloon: you squeeze (in) one place (and) the air will just go to another spot. Immigrants would just go to another state. We need an effective national policy.â€?

Weigel argued that the disconnection between state and national policies is a fundamental obstacle to immigration reform.

Although there isn’t a cohesive national policy, Weigel said the states should assess their own needs carefully. “Work with the congressional delegations,â€? he said. “Each state could host a forum with their representatives and ďŹ gure out the needs and interests of that particular state. I think that could give us more bang for our buck.â€?

Regarding a national policy, Weigel thinks the debate is highly susceptible to oversimpliďŹ cations.

One such generalization was voiced in by, State Rep. Virgil Peck, R-Tyro, who incited public fury when he joked that illegal aliens should be deal with in the same way the state deals with feral hogs: shot from helicopter.

Though Peck insists he was, “speaking like a southeast Kansas person,� the blunder shows how irrationality can be erroneously entertained as a legitimate position in the debate. “You could hear testimony after testimony from the Minutemen (Civil Defense Corps) about the illegal invasion,� said Weigel. “But I was at a hearing where a man – a teacher for 39 years, who gave rides and small jobs to students – asked if they were going to make him a felon. He was in tears.�

A colleague of Weigel’s mentioned to him the story of a rural conservative farmer who had grown so close to the undocumented worker who lived on his farm that he was going to offer the farm to his worker as an inheritance.

Weigel claims his research sketches a picture of a public more receptive to fair reform than people such as Kobach might claim. “There’s common knowledge that something needs to be done, but ‘Where’s the political support for a legal path to citizenship?’ the legislatures ask,� Weigel said. “There’s a lot of fear and paranoia in this debate. They’re afraid of the 4,000 who will call in complaining vs. the 50,000 who say we need to be fair and (provide) good reform.�

l 10 de marzo, Isaac Perdomo-Paz fue acusado de triple homicidio por disparar a muerte a Dejan Joksimovic, Armin Hamindovic y DelďŹ no Elizondo, lo cual fue reportado recientemente en Dos Mundos.

Perdomo-Paz detenido en el Centro de DetenciĂłn del Sheriff en Liberty, Mo., sin derecho a ďŹ anza, fue arrestado recientemente por cargos no relacionados con los homicidios. Él serĂĄ juzgado por tres delitos de acciĂłn criminal armada, ademĂĄs de los tres cargos por homicidio en primer grado.

Perdomo-Paz se declarĂł no culpable el 10 de marzo en el Tribunal de Circuito Asociada en el condado Clay (Mo.). Se espera que aparezca ante la Corte nuevamente el 24 de marzo y podrĂ­a ser ejecutado.

El tiroteo ocurriĂł la noche del 26 de Feb. durante una ďŹ esta que habĂ­a sido suspendida en Independence, Mo., y movida posteriormente al hotel Red Roof Inn en la interestatal 435 y la carretera 210 justo al sur de Worlds of Fun. n March 10, Isaac Perdomo-Paz was charged with triple homicide for the shooting deaths of Dejan Joksimovic, Armin Hamindovic and DelďŹ no Elizondo, which was reported recently in Dos Mundos.

Being held at the Sherriff’s Detention Center in Liberty, Mo., without bail, Perdomo-Paz was arrested recently on charges unrelated to the homicides. He’ll be tried for three counts of armed criminal action, in addition to the three counts of ďŹ rst-degree homicide.

Perdomo-Paz entered a not guilty plea March 10 in the Clay County (Mo.) Associate Circuit Court. He’s expected to appear in court again March 24 and could face execution.

The shooting occurred the night of Feb. 26 during a party that had been busted in Independence, Mo., and was moved to a Red Roof Inn at Interstate Highway 435 and state Highway 210 just south of Worlds of Fun. According to witnesses’ accounts, the room was packed with 15 people. Noise complaints were ďŹ led twice before a 911 dispatcher was called at 3 a.m. after the shooting.

According to court records, Perdomo-Paz ďŹ rst targeted Hamindovic. One witness’ testimony claims he was upset because Hamindovic was sitting by his ex-girlfriend. According to the witness’ account, the suspect “lifted his shirt, pulled a black handgun from his waistband, extended his arm, pointing the gun towards Armin with his ďŹ nger on the trigger and made a motionâ€? as if he were “rackingâ€? the gun. After that, Perdomo-Paz reportedly shot Hamindovic in the head and then shot Elizondo and Joksimovic. “Three lives at such a young age, snuffed out at what will most likely be known as a fairly senseless and inane reason,â€? Clay County Sheriff Bob Boydston said.

Perdomo-Paz has been identiďŹ ed as a member the East Side Locos street gang and is known by the gang name “Spider.â€? The police are calling his speciďŹ c sect of the East Side Locos gang a “junior divisionâ€? of the whole unit. However, prosecutors are conďŹ dent the incident was not gang-related.

Crew aboard the USS Ronald Reagan 100 miles off Japan’s East Coast were exposed to low-level radioactive contamination, prompting the aircraft carrier to reposition.

Because the country’s lost so much electric generating capacity, the government has imposed rolling blackouts. Some stores, The BBC reported, have sold out of candles and face masks.

According to a March 14 CNN report, 91 countries and six international aid organizations have pledged assistance, and 11 urban search and rescue teams had arrived from 10 countries, including the United States and Mexico. The U.S. has also dispatched 10 helicopters and eight Navy ships. Mexico sent two structure assessment specialists, members of the Mexican Red Cross and personnel from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

María Dolores es una Educadora de Prevención del VIH y Consejera en Embarazo Adolescente en Guadalupe Centers Inc. en Kansas City, Mo. María Dolores se involucró con la consciencia sobre el VIH porque “simplemente me di cuenta que cuando tienes VIH, la gente que se supone debe estar contigo, no lo está y no te apoyan”, dijo.

Como Consejera en Embarazo Adolescente, sus labores incluyen hacerle la prueba de embarazo a chicas y asegurarse que las que estén embarazadas reciban cuidado prenatal.

“Yo trato de educarlas y de brindarles apoyo”, refirió.

Para ella, ayudar a las adolescentes le hace sentir como una hermana mayor u otra madre.

María Dolores cree que el activismo relacionado con la salud es algo que más hispanos deberían buscar.

“Nosotros debemos volvernos más visibles en la plaza pública. Nuestras voces deberían volverse más fuertes – y nosotros tenemos que unirnos no sólo como personas, sino como una unidad para involucrarnos en todos los niveles disponible para ayudar a nuestra comunidad a superar los retos que están frente a nosotros”, concluyó.

who can’t speak English.

“I think helping people is one of my biggest passions,” Duenas said.

Duenas started her healthcare career at the Argentine Family Health Center. The Early Detection Program she coordinates there targets low-income people without insurance.

“This program allows women to have a pap exam,” Duenas said.

For Duenas, being healthy means to be able to do whatever you want to do.

“It is important to take care of ourselves and prevent any kind of illness,” Duenas stated.

For Duenas, helping women become or stay healthy is a labor of love.

“I enjoy helping people and being able to guide them and help them,” she said. “It is something really cool.”

Of all the people who’ve mentored Duenas during her healthcare career, Dr. Yolanda HuetVaughn has been the most important to her.

“I admire her and respect her because without her help I wouldn’t (have) had the chance to be here and help people take care of their health,” Duenas said.

Reyes is an HIV prevention educator and a teen pregnancy counselor at Guadalupe Centers Inc. in Kansas City, Mo. Her job includes creating community awareness about the importance of getting tested for HIV. “I go to the schools, to gay bars and any other place where I can talk to them about HIV and STDs (sexually transmitted diseases),” Reyes said. “I just try to make sure that people stay healthy.”

When she was 18, Reyes started working with people with HIV. “In those times, people were afraid of disease,” Reyes recalled.

Reyes got involved in HIV awareness because “I just realized that when you have HIV, people who are supposed to be with you, they are not and they don’t support you,” she said.

As a teen pregnancy counselor, Reyes’ duties include testing girls for pregnancy and making sure pregnant teens receive prenatal care.

“I try to educate them and give them support,” Reyes said.

For Reyes, helping teens makes her feel like a big sister or another mother.

Reyes believes health-related activism is something more Hispanics should pursue.

“We must become more visible in the public square,” she said. “Our voices must become louder – and we must unite not only as a people, but unite by becoming involved at every level available to help our community overcome the challenges that are before us.”

The local newspaper is a wonderful tool for educators to use with their students. Teachers should contact their local school board or local paper to see if an agreement can be worked out where teachers can provide their students with the local newspaper every day.

Ésta es una costumbre que inició el actual mandatario, quien twitea regularmente a través de @FelipeCalderon. Además, México quiere un presidente que sea abierto y no tenga nada que ocultar.

Dicho esto, me sorprendió la soltura con que el presidente Felipe Calderón se manejó durante la conferencia de prensa en la Casa Blanca el 3 de marzo, durante la cual habló con el mandatario norteamericano, Barack Obama, acerca de la violencia generada en México por el narcotráfico, y se unió a él en su promesa de mayor cooperación entre las dos naciones. Hasta pareció que disfrutaba la ocasión, lo que es irónico porque Calderón no da conferencias de prensa así en México. (Calderón otorga conferencias de prensa en el exterior pero no en su propio país – una doble moral. Es injusto, y totalmente inaceptable).

But after tens of thousands of deaths and no end in sight for drug-related violence, should the government embark on negotiations with the drug lords? Interestingly, 46 percent of those surveyed said they would prefer that violence cease in Mexico, even if that meant some drug trafficking would continue.

In fact, a well-known member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) told me off the record a while ago there was no reason to spill Mexican blood over drugs because, after all, the narcotics are going to U.S. consumers.

Whether that’s true or not, there also exists a widely-held perception that the PRI negotiated with the cartels – or looked the other way – when the party held the presidency throughout most of the 20th century.

In interviews, Sen. Manlio Fabio Beltrones and the governor of the state of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, both PRI members, have told me the notion that Mexican presidents negotiated with the drug cartels is false. That story, rather, is a political ploy intended to diminish the party’s chances of capturing the presidency next year, they said.

Despite that, if the elections were held today, according to the survey, the PRI would receive 49 percent of the vote, followed by the National Action Party (PAN) with 20 percent and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) with 16 percent. And if the PAN and the PRD were united in an electoral alliance, the PRI would receive 55 percent, compared to the alliance’s 45 percent.

There might be many factors contributing to the PRI’s revival, despite its history of authoritarianism and censorship. Perhaps Mexicans want a tougher government. Or perhaps they want a party they think knows how to negotiate.

Or perhaps the PRI has re-emerged because of the natural erosion of the PAN’s influence after two terms in power and because of the infighting in the leftist-wing PRD. I believe, above all, Mexicans want a modern president with fresh ideas. The country is being revved up by social networking: Among those Mexicans with Internet access, 64 percent have used Twitter, Facebook, MySpace or another social networking site to stay connected with friends and family members. So it’s no surprise that 57 percent of those surveyed said they expect the next inhabitant of Los Pinos, the presidential residence, to continue to communicate digitally with Mexicans, as Calderon does. Also, Mexicans want a president with nothing to hide.

That said, I was surprised by Calderon’s relaxed attitude during a press conference March 3 at the White House, during which he discussed Mexico’s drug violence with U.S. President Barack Obama and joined him in pledging more cooperation between the nations.

He even seemed to enjoy the occasion, which is ironic because Calderon doesn’t hold these sorts of press conferences in Mexico. (Calderon will hold press conferences outside the country, but not in his own – a double standard. It’s unfair – and unacceptable.)

There’s still a long way to go before the presidential election on July 1, 2012, but drug violence and economic malaise have accelerated political change in Mexico. With Calderon continuing to drag the country to a place no one wants to go, it’s times like these when Mexico’s six-year presidential terms seem too long.

How about only five years for the next president?

exican officials have condemned a sting operation by a United States law enforcement agency to capture drug traffickers. The ploy allegedly introduced 1,765 U.S. guns illegally into Mexico. On March 11, Mexico’s attorney general’s office announced that it had launched probes into whether violations had been committed on Mexican territory and if the U.S. agency responsible could be subject to legal action.

The 15-month, Phoenix-based operation codenamed “Fast and Furious” was carried out by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). It involved selling the guns to suspected traffickers from Mexico, anticipating that they’d smuggle the weapons across the border. It’s called letting guns “walk” and allows ATF agents to track their path. With any luck, it leads investigators to Mexican crime bosses.

The U.S. had advised Mexican officials about operations north of the border, but “Mexico had no knowledge of the existence of an operation that might include … controlled trafficking of arms to Mexican territory,” Mexico announced on March 10.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico countered with this statement “The alleged transfer of arms to Mexican territory at this point is exactly that – an allegation.”

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has ordered the Justice Department’s inspector general (IG) to lead an inquiry into the ATF’s investigative tactics.

But the IG has been accused of ignoring concerns about the Fast and Furious operation, first raised by a whistleblower who eventually went to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. That panel is now examining ATF’s actions.

CBS News and the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, a public-interest investigative organization broke the story on March 3.

The guns, valued at $1 million included everything from pistols to .50-caliber sniper rifles. They “are going to be turning up in crimes on both sides of the border for decades,” whistleblower John Dodson told the Center for Public Integrity. “With the number of guns we let walk, we’ll never know how many people were killed, raped, robbed … there is nothing we can do to round up those guns.”

Linking responsibility for the growing violence in Mexico and the ATF’s Fast and Furious operation, ATF senior agent Dodson and other senior agents repeatedly confronted their supervisors.

Their misgivings were dismissed. The supervisors’ typical response was “If you’re going to make an omelet, you’ve got to break some eggs,” Dodson told CBS. The continued opposition prompted one supervisor to address the issue in an email obtained by CBS. “Whether you care or not people of rank and authority at HQ are paying close attention to this case … we are doing what they envisioned …

The gun walking scheme was approved all the way up to the Justice Department, Dodson told CBS. The clandestine operation appears to have backfired. Officials suspect that one of the guns may have been used to kill U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agent Jaime Jorge Zapata and wound agent Victor Avila Jr. in an ambush on Feb. 15 in Mexico. And in December, two of the guns were found at the scene of a border shootout. U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was killed.

Don’t try to change anybody No trates de cambiar a nadie

A

doro a mi dentista porque siempre es súper puntual, pero en la última cita surgió una emergencia y tuve que esperar más de una hora.

Mientras esperaba, quería contestar algunos de mis e-mails. Pero, no logré mucho, porque me puse a observar un talk show titulado: “Mi marido no sirve para nada”, donde tres mujeres hablaban despectivamente de sus parejas en plena televisión nacional; ¡en vivo y a todo color!

Una de ellas se quejaba: “mi marido jamás se ha dignado a lavar un vaso”, otra se lamentaba: “mi esposo nunca en la vida ha planificado ni tan siquiera una salida al cine” y por último una dijo sarcásticamente “por lo menos el mío se levantaba muy temprano, así tiene más tiempo para no hacer nada”.

Pero más entretenido aún, fue ver la paciente—en la sala de espera—decir orgullosamente: “mi marido también es un bueno para nada, y mientras más me quejo, menos me ayuda, por eso, yo termino haciéndolo todo”.

Quizá, al igual que estas señoras, te quejas del comportamiento de alguien cercano a ti—tu esposo, tus hijos, tu compañero de trabajo o tu suegra.

Te advierto que la manera menos efectiva de motivar a alguien para que coopere contigo y haga lo que quieres, ¡es quejándote! En vez de usar las quejas, hay dos métodos muy eficaces para lograr lo que quieres; número uno: alábalo y dile lo que te gusta de él; y número dos: agradécele las cosas buenas que ha hecho por ti. por ejemplo, si tu esposo es desorganizado, pero es buen padre y trata bien a tu mamá, entonces agradécele esas acciones.

No trates de cambiar a alguien, ¡es desgastador!, incluso tomaría demasiado tiempo y al final lo único que consigues es alejar a las personas de ti. Sin embargo, aunque es casi imposible cambiar a alguien, si puedes influenciar en su comportamiento.

Estudios del comportamiento humano comprueban que cuando adulas a alguien y se lo manifiestas, incrementas su autoestima y como por arte de magia, la conducta de esa persona se acomoda a tu favor.

La próxima vez, antes de quejarte, mejor piensa en algún aspecto positivo acerca de esa persona. Experimenta el poder de destacar las cualidades de los demás, y así dejarás de mortificarte y a la vez, te sentirás mejor contigo mismo.

Even funnier was hearing another patient in the waiting room proudly proclaim, “My husband’s a goodfor-nothing too! And the more I nag, the less he helps, so I wind up doing everything.”

Maybe you complain about someone in your life: your husband, your children, a co-worker or your motherin-law. But nagging is the worst way to get someone to cooperate and do what you want!

Instead, here are two effective ways to get your way. No. 1: Compliment him and tell him all about what you love about him. No. 2: Thank him for all the good things he’s done for you.

For example, if your husband is disorganized, but he’s a good father and treats your mother well, then tell him how much you appreciate those things.

Don’t try to change anybody. It won’t work! It’s a waste of time – and in the end, all you’ll do is push people away from you.

But even though it’s practically impossible to change anyone, you can influence how they act. Studies on human behavior show that when you express your appreciation for someone, their self-esteem improves – and as if by magic, they become more accommodating to your wishes.

Next time, instead of nagging, think of something positive about that person.

Another discussion topic was the 2010 U.S. census. Recent census figures indicate that five out of six new Kansas City residents identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino. Estimates indicate that Kansas City’s Latino population is at least 10 percent. As a result, there was discussion about the importance of Latinos participating in elections and in city and state politics.

El rey de la lucha aérea y del 619... llega a Kansas City Í

dolo del pancracio luchístico, rey de la lucha aérea y fundador de una de las llaves más famosas la “619”, Rey Misterio llega a Kansas City para traer emoción, llaveo, mucha acción y demostrar por qué es reconocido como uno de los mejores luchadores de esta época. Óscar Gutiérrez es originario de California; sin embargo, se considera 100% mexicano. Sus padres tapatíos y su familia en general lo motivan a seguir día a día consolidándose en la lucha de la WWE. Rey Misterio comenzó con su carrera desde muy pequeño, su pasión por el deporte de las cuerdas lo llevó a perseverar y trascender como luchador en diversas empresas de lucha norteamericanas.

El ídolo de la afición mexicana, Rey Misterio habló con Dos Mundos de su carrera y planes, así como de su futura lucha en Wrestlemanía.

Dos Mundos: Rey, platícanos un poco de tu carrera.

Rey Misterio: Comencé en Tijuana, Baja California, empecé desde muy pequeño a entrenar. Crecí junto a mi tío Rey Misterio--hermano menor de mi mamá--y prácticamente crecí en el deporte de la lucha libre, pasando el mayor de mi tiempo con mi tío.

DM: ¿Quiénes eran tus ídolos cuando eras niño?

RM: Definitivamente mi tío, yo crecí queriendo ser como él. Él no tenía hijos en ese entonces, y pues había una relación muy cercana...como de hijo; y para mí, él era mi segundo padre porque yo tengo a mi padre todavía, gracias a Dios. Pero además de mi tío, también Mil Mascaras, El Santo y bueno Súper Astro.

DM: ¿Entonces tu tío fue tu maestro?

RM: Sí, él fue quien me envició en este deporte.

DM: ¿Cuándo fue tu debut?

RM: Mi debut fue en 1989 en Tijuana, Baja California. Fue en el estacionamiento de una iglesia, me armaron un ring y la lucha de ese día era para recaudar fondos para la iglesia y tuvimos una función de lucha libre.

DM: ¿Cómo llegas a la WWE? RM: Bueno mi carrera inicia en México después, a los 17 años y luché allí hasta como los 20. Ya tenía 6 años como luchador profesional y se me presentó una oportunidad para luchar en Japón. Allá nos fue muy bien a mi compañero y a mí; tan bien que después de esa lucha empezaron a llevarnos a Japón y hacíamos giras con una empresa japonesa. Después comienza a circular el nombre de Rey Misterio internacionalmente. Había una empresa en Filadelfia llamada ECW y de ahí es donde Rey Misterio se presenta por primera vez ante un público norteamericano.

DM: ¿Cómo te recibieron?

RM: Increíble, ya sabían quién era Rey Misterio. Curiosamente estos aficionados de esta empresa son conocedores de lucha libre y si no eran, pues me estudiaron antes de que yo fuera a luchar y aceptaron todo lo que hice. Así fue mi recibimiento en Estados Unidos y nos fuimos a trabajar para esa empresa Psicosis y yo. Hicimos campaña con esa empresa, tendría yo 20 años y después pertenezco a una empresa que se llama WCW y ahí es dónde ʻde verasʼ arranca ya mi carrera.

DM: ¿Cómo nace el 619?

RM: Es un lance creado por un luchador Japonés llamado el Tigre Enmascarado. Después yo veo que Súper Astro-- uno de mis maestros e ídolos--empieza a hacerlo; y cuando yo empiezo a luchar como que lo adapté y también lo empecé a hacer. Pero llega el momento en donde entró a WWE y le hice un pequeño cambio. Empecé a acomodar a mis oponentes en contra de las cuerdas, conectaba … y... el nombre salió de estar pensando en qué nombre podía darle a unos lances que tengo... y

decidí ponerle el nombre en base al código de área de San Diego, California.

DM: ¿Qué sientes cuando ves a luchadores grandes como el Undertaker--que los ves y dices ʻwowʼ, son súper grandes?

RM: Ya a estos momentos de mi carrera no hay intimidación, no hay temor, no hay miedo. Respeto siempre, pero siempre fui yo el más pequeño en la escuela de lucha libre; el más pequeño de los amigos en la cuadra. Soy el más pequeño en mi casa y entonces crecí alrededor de gente más alta que yo. Y quieras o no, me da una seguridad propia, porque no es la primera ocasión que me pasa. Toda mi vida fui el más pequeño de mi casa.

DM: ¿Y qué viene en Wrestlemanía?

RM: Es un evento que siempre esperamos ansiosos a que llegue.

Es toda una semana de diversión, desde conocer a tu luchador favorito, sesión de fotos con ellos, una exposición de historia de Wrestlemanía, en donde tienes 26 años atrás de historia; y puedes ver que surgió en los años pasados. Hay un museo que te muestra toda la historia, y bueno, por supuesto la cartelera de esa noche que va ser muy interesante, porque vienen dos leyendas: Steve Austin y The Rock.

D M : ¿Cómo te definirías en 3 palabras?

RM: Es todo y sin hacer a mi familia de menos, porque yo creo que como todo padre y esposo, la familia viene primero. Y yo tengo muy presente que mi carrera y el nombre de Rey Misterio--y la trayectoria y fama--lo tengo por mi público. Yo no tuviera absolutamente nada, si mi público no siguiera mi carrera... los niños, los abuelos, los papás.

Es un tipo de religión cuando se trata de lucha libre para la familia mexicana. Pero tengo muy presente que gracias a mi público tengo el lugar que tengo.

DM: ¿Quiénes son los amigos de Rey Misterio?, ¿con quiénes sales?

RM: Edge, uno de los refeeres; Chavo Guerrero. En ocasiones cuando lo veo, Randy Orton. Y en sí, todos nos llevamos muy bien. Pero siempre andamos de ciudad en ciudad, viajando, y a veces cada uno tiene su día muy independiente.

DM: ¿Es difícil ser luchador?

RM: Sí, pero no imposible. Viajas mucho, dejas de ver a tu familia por mucho tiempo y te la vives en los aviones, en hoteles y en carros.

DM: ¿Qué les dirías a los niños?

RM: Yo les diría que estudien y que la escuela es muy importante, más importante que cualquier cosa y ya después que tomen cualquier deporte que quieran como segunda opción.

DM: Un mensaje para todos tus fans de KC. RM: Gracias por el apoyo, porque el año pasado que estuvimos aquí me toco ver muchas banderas mexicanas. Para mí, el ver una bandera mexicana en Estados Unidos y no nada más una, sino ver varias, es de alguna manera diciéndole a los luchadores americanos, a mi patrón, mira hay apoyo y muy grande y es muy bonito el poder representar y que me representen.

AC: EnojĂłnâ&#x20AC;Ś Una persona normal con diferentes estados de ĂĄnimo, me adapto a cualquier situaciĂłn. Esa es una de las cosas a mi favor, pues cuando se trata de echar relajo, hecho relajo y cuando se trata de estar serio, estoy serio. AC: Era una inquietud que tenĂ­a desde pequeĂąo.

A mĂ­ me gustaba la mĂşsica y siempre quise hacer algo relacionado con eso. Me metĂ­ mĂĄs cuando hubo un concurso en Oaxaca,... era de canto y me acuerdo que cante â&#x20AC;&#x153;La Mochila Azulâ&#x20AC;?, de Pedro FernĂĄndez. AhĂ­ gane el primer lugar, era mi primera vez frente al micrĂłfono, despuĂŠs trabaje en varios lados.

Cuando llegue a Los Ă ngeles, un dĂ­a escuche un anuncio de una escuela de locuciĂłn y al siguiente dĂ­a hice mi examen en el American Communications Institute y empecĂŠ a estudiar ya de lleno y a conciencia. En mi clase comenzamos 21 y terminamos 2. En realidad fue una etapa muy bonita y pasaron muchas cosas, participe en la televisora local e hice comerciales de televisiĂłn. AdemĂĄs, como era Presidente del Consejo Estudiantil, conocĂ­ a gente importante y talentosa.

Tuve varias oportunidades de trabajo y tuve grandes maestros, entre ellos Gustavo Vargas y â&#x20AC;&#x153;El Cucuyâ&#x20AC;?.

TrabajĂŠ bastante tiempo en California y despuĂŠs vine a dar a Topeka, en donde tuve un programa por 9 aĂąos y lleguĂŠ a tener el mejor raiting de la ciudad. Luego lleguĂŠ a Kansas City y aquĂ­ me tienen cada maĂąana tratando de amenizar a los radioescuchas.

La NFL en el limbo Por Adolfo Cortés

l peor de los escenarios se hizo realidad cuando los E jugadores pusieron demandas

antimonopolios contra la NFL y los dueños de equipos y realizan un cierre patronal.

Incapaces de decidir la manera de repartirse una suma de nueve mil millones de dólares anuales, los propietarios y los jugadores de la NFL dejaron en el limbo al deporte más popular en Estados Unidos, al romper las negociaciones horas antes de que expirara su contrato colectivo de trabajo.

El pasado fin de semana (marzo 12,13), los dueños declararon un cierre patronal, lo cual marca la primera suspensión de actividades en la liga desde 1987 y compromete la temporada del 2011.

El problema no es la huelga sino el tiempo que se llevará solucionar sus diferencias y pone en riesgo la temporada.

Los dueños de los equipos podría reclutar jugadores esquiroles como sucedió en 1987.

La liga informó en un comunicado que tomaba la “difícil pero necesaria medida de ejercer su derecho estipulado en la ley federal del trabajo a imponer un cierre patronal”.

El pasado viernes (11 de marzo), la Asociación de Jugadores de la NFL renunció como representante de los jugadores. De esa manera, los jugadores podrían demandar por monopolio a la NFL. La gran disputa: el dinero total a repartir que asciende a nueve mil millones.

Al final de las negociaciones, eran unos $185 millones de dólares la diferencia entre las partes al discutir. ¿Cuánto dinero se llevarían los dueños de los equipos cada temporada por sus gastos de operación, antes de dividir el resto de los ingresos con los jugadores? Hace meses esa brecha era de mil millones.

En la querella antimonopolio, los jugadores buscan autorización para iniciar una demanda colectiva contra los dueños de los equipos, bajo el argumento de que la NFL conspiró para negarles la posibilidad de ofrecer sus servicios. Pero, podrían pasar meses para que haya un dictamen sobre la petición del mandato judicial; y los juicios antimonopolio suelen tardar mucho más.

Lo dicho, la NFL está en un limbo.

NOTICE OF REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS The Housing Authority of Kansas City Kansas is requesting proposals for contract inspection services. The Housing Authority is entering into a energy performance contract and is need of assistance with inspection and quality control of the proposed energy conservation measures to be installed at all of its developments. Energy improvements are to begin in April 2011 and will be completed by May 2012.

Inspection services will be primarily needed in the first six months of this period and possibly on a month to month basis after the first six months.

Written proposals will be received in person, or through the mail, until 5:00 p.m., CDT, on March 31, 2011, at the Housing Authority’s administration office, located at 1124 North 9th Street, Kansas City, Kansas. The selection process for contract inspection services will consider the information and criteria listed in the Request For Proposals (RFP). El Sporting de Kansas City anunció el fichaje de un nuevo defensor con gran abolengo futbolístico.

El brasileño Julio César Santos Correa de 32 años, quien ha militado en una gran cantidad de equipos europeos, que incluyen al Real Madrid y AC Milán; además de haber jugado con el Tigres de Monterrey de la Liga Mexicana de Fútbol.

“La experiencia que él ha recibido jugando en los grandes equipos del mundo será de mucho valor para nosotros en el transcurso de los 34 partidos de la temporada de la MLS”, dijo el director técnico del club Peter Vermes.

Flores keeps going

Kansas State University (K-State) and the University of Nebraska – two men’s basketball programs with Latino personnel – left the Big 12 Conference postseason tournament quickly.

K-State – led by Latino coach Frank Martin with a roster that includes Latino post player Jordan Henriquez-Roberts – fell to the University of Colorado 87-75 March 10 in the singleelimination tournament, which ended March 12 and was held in Kansas City, Mo.’s Sprint Center. The Wildcats, who had a first-round bye, trailed the second-round meeting 73-72 with 1 minute, 32 seconds left, but the Buffaloes answered with a 14-3 run.

“We were undisciplined,” Wildcats senior guard Jacob Pullen said. “We gave up some easy shots and … we just made some bad decisions offensively.”

The Wildcats quickly began focusing on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, a 68-team, single-elimination national tournament. K-State (22-10) will begin tournament play Thursday (March 17) against Utah State University in Tucson, Ariz.

“Not much you can do (about this game)…. What are you going to focus on this game for?” Martin said after the Colorado loss.

Nebraska lost a first-round heartbreaker March 9 to Oklahoma State University 53-52.

Cornhusker guard Lance Jeter was driving for a possible gamewinning shot when he turned the ball over as time expired.

The Cornhuskers (19-12), who were invited to play in the National Invitational Tournament, have two Latin players: Puerto Rican native Jorge Brian Diaz and Brazilian native Andre Almeida. Diaz, who declined to be interviewed, scored eight points and had three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Almeida (see below) contributed six rebounds, three points and two blocked shots.

Farewell With Nebraska’s loss, the Big 12 lost part of its Latino connection: Starting with the 2011-12 season, Nebraska will play in the Big 10 Conference.

She might have been among their most durable, too.

Flores, who appeared recently in Dos Mundos, hit the court hard and appeared to be in pain late in the second half of MU’s meeting with the University of Texas March 8 in the Big 12 women’s postseason tournament. Still, she finished the game, scoring 13 points, making four assists and grabbing four rebounds during MU’s 79-66 first-round loss in the single-elimination tournament, which concluded March 12 and was held in Kansas City, Mo.’s Municipal Auditorium.

“That’s a kid that’s been actually throwing up at halftime and came out and, I thought, continued to compete pretty hard in the second half,” Pingeton said.

Flores also had to deal with an injured finger this season. But despite any health issues, she played 30 games, including 25 starts. The 6-foot-3 junior from San Antonio led the Tigers in blocked shots (56), and was second in scoring (389 points) and total rebounds (183). “(She’s) somebody that … will certainly be an anchor for us next season,” Pingeton said.

Taking a breather After cruising past the University of Colorado 71-45 March 8 and then losing to top-seeded Baylor University 86-51 March 9 in the second round, the University of Kansas (KU) women were ready for a breather as they waited to find out if they’d be invited to play in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship or the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

“We’ve got midterms coming up (at school),” Jayhawks guard Monica Engelman said. “So we’ll just take a little break and work on ourselves and get back in the gym (to prepare for the next game).”

But with the break’s conclusion, the Jayhawks would need to “focus on what we’ve got to do and get better each and every day,” said KU guard Angel Goodrich.

Defensively, the Wildcats “didn’t scramble very well” to the ball and “didn’t communicate,” Karr said. But “the main thing was the rebounding,” according to Karr, whose club got outrebounded 52-24.
