os Mundos invited some Latinas to celebrate their role models. D The following are their tributes: Francesca Beard (health promoter, Kansas Statewide Farmworker

Health Program) and her mother, Socorro Trevizo Francesca Beard hated school and resisted going. Her mom’s reaction is fixed in family lore: The mother of 11 kindly, but firmly put her second youngest child – with her shoes – outside. “She pretty much had to kick me out of the house,” Beard recalled. Then, the determined Trevizo marched her headstrong daughter to school. “She made sure I had an education,” Beard said. “She loved being a housewife, but she pushed education. So did Dad.” Born in San Luis, Potosi, Mexico, Trevizo was a toddler when her PAGE 4B>

ylan Theno suffered from bullying. The student hostility and staff negligence he encountered eventually forced him out of Winnetonka High School in Kansas City, Mo. Although he eventually won $440,000 in damages from a civil lawsuit and graduated from Johnson County (Kan.) Community College, he believes bullying kept him from experiencing key high school moments, such as prom. Theno minced no words when discussing the role his administrators played. “They failed me,” Theno said. Theno spoke at “Take a Stand: Keeping Kids Safe from Bullying and Harassment,” a seminar hosted on May 2 by the KC Human Rights Commission at the Kauffman Center. Theno was joined by Eddie Lorenzo and Linda Eakes, both from the commission; and Jane McQueeny, supervisory attorney for the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights. Although Theno’s case is a decade old, the problem of bullying remains a part of the way adolescents interact. Eakes cited statistics that show child homicides total 1 percent of U.S. adolescent deaths – and 20 percent of the perpetrators of those homicides were known victims of bullying. Of that 20 percent, half showed prior signals they would lash out. Bullying has been shown to begin as early as 2 years old. McQueeny detailed the provisions of Title VI and IX, which provide protection against
