A tribute to amazing dads

Los recién llegados que hablan español están haciendo de la iglesia católica de Sta. Sabina en Belton, Mo., su hogar espiritual. Ellos tienen las mismas necesidades pastorales, pero también buscan a la iglesia para guiarlos y ayudarlos con sus necesidades materiales. Y ellos buscan salida para apoyar y enriquecer a su nuevo iglesia y comunidad. José rompe barreras y cierra la brecha entre los recién llegados y su iglesia y su comunidad. Durante los últimos nueve años, ha trabajado como el Coordinador de los Ministerios Hispanos de la iglesia. “Nosotros educamos a la gente sobre su fe y los hacemos sentir como en casa en nuestra iglesia y país”, dijo. “Les enseñamos sobre sus derechos y responsabilidades, el sistema y servicios que ofrece el Consulado de México en Kansas City. Les damos herramientas para que puedan ser productivos”. Recent Spanish-speaking arrivals are making St. Sabina Catholic Church in Belton, Mo., their spiritual home. They have the same pastoral needs, but they also look to the church for guidance and assistance with material needs. And they seek gateways for supporting and enriching their new church home and community. Mejia breaks down barriers and bridges the gap between the newcomers and their church and community. For the past nine years, he’s worked as the parish’s Hispanic Ministries coordinator. “We educate people about their faith and make them feel at home in our church and country,” Mejia said. “We teach them about their rights and responsibilities, the system and services offered by the Mexican Consulate in Kansas City. We give them tools so they can be productive.” As an émigré from Guanajuato, Mexico, personal experience taught Mejia about the struggles immigrants and refugees confront in their pursuit of a better life here. Who makes Dos Mundos a reality?: the production and design team

Part II of a month-long series

os Mundos is like a machine, with different parts that work each D day to provide the paper’s readers with the latest information. Some pieces of the machinery with more seniority are in the production

design department, and include: Elizabeth “Lisa” Lopez, operations manager and assistant editor; Hector Perez, editorial production manager; and Luis Merlo, ad production manager. These three people have played fundamental roles in developing the paper, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. During the years they’ve worked for the company, they’ve demonstrated their passion for their work.

Lisa has worked for Dos Mundos for 10 years. “I saw the advertisement (for a job) in Dos Mundos newspaper and I came to apply,” Lisa said of choosing to work for the paper. Lisa, who has a bachelor’s degree in electrical and mechanical engineering from the Universidad La Salle in Mexico City, helps select the articles Dos Mundos publishes. She also handles most of the translating of articles from English to Spanish. In addition, she coordinates and supervise the overall production process for the paper and updates its Web site. For Lisa, being part of Dos Mundos is a great honor and responsibility. Lisa Lopez
