Humble observances reminiscent of the Nativity

hristmas invites unbridled expression of feeling, faith, appetite and art. It’s attended by merry and colorful set-piece occasions with friends, business associates and family, and the time-honored ritual of exchanging gifts. Scientists who’ve studied human social behavior tell us the observance of exchanging goods has been throughout history a valuable medium for demonstrating goodwill and promoting peace and harmony. It helps to define relationships and strengthen personal bonds. Exchanging gifts delights the giver, who derives satisfaction from feeling helpful, generous and loving; and the recipient, who feels valued and connected. Both experience the joyful thrill of anticipation. The giver is keen to see the recipient’s happy reaction to the gift. The recipient eagerly looks forward to the pleasing surprise that awaits. Gift-giving is but one of many exquisite holiday customs. The hope of Christmas doesn’t hang in the balance of grandiose gift exchanges. Nor does it depend on pitch-perfect staging, two leading figures of the world’s major religions reminded as Advent began. There’s more to the holiday than gift-giving, Pope Benedict XVI recently pointed out. On Dec. 11, he was celebrating Mass in a working-class neighborhood in Rome. The pontiff reassured the faithful whose Christmas this year would be “difficult” because of worldwide economic troubles. “Real joy is linked to something deeper,” he said. The Holy Father urged people to pay greater attention to others and love them more and to hold Divine Love in hearts and minds. “Any small gesture of goodness is like one of the lights (on the Christmas tree); together with other lights, it illuminates … even the darkest night,” he said. When the great weight “of difficulties, problems and suffering” seem to shroud us in darkness, be a light, the Holy Father encouraged. His Christmas wish is that we all illumine the spheres in which we live: our families, jobs, neighborhoods, towns and cities. He reminded people that the light that truly illumines our hearts and gives “us firm and sure hope” can only be found in “the child whom we contemplate on Christmas.” During a recent BBC Radio program in the United Kingdom, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams reminded listeners that high-priced gifts, perfectly lavish feasts and all-inclusive Christmas card exchanges aren’t requisite for observing Christmas properly. “God’s already here for us,” the spiritual leader of the world’s Anglicans said. “He’s not waiting until we get Christmas perfect.” The archbishop pointed out that the circumstances of Christ’s birth certainly weren’t grand or perfect. The Christ child’s first bed was an empty animal feeding trough in a stable. The rough shelter was the only available quarters. Mary and Joseph had traveled the roughly 80 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem to register for the census, as required by law. Their unplanned journey took more than a week, involving real hardship. Mary spent the final week of her pregnancy on a donkey, exposed to the elements and perils and privations of the open road. Then, miles away from family and friends, she gave birth to her firstborn son on a bed of straw among the livestock. The story of the Nativity tells us something really vital, the archbishop said. Humble observances are in keeping with the first Christmas.

l sistema de inmigración que funciona en Estados Unidos además de ineficiente es complicado, pero si no nos ocupamos de conocer

algunos aspectos básicos que nos pueden afectar directamente, puede resultar más complicado de lo que realmente es. Bien dice el viejo adagio que la ignorancia es atrevida y, si bien es cierto que nuestra comunidad debe padecer diariamente la inequidad del sistema, también es cierto que un poco de conocimiento y ciertas precauciones pueden ayudar bastante. Con la proximidad de las fiestas de acción de gracias y la época decembrina, además, muchos se preguntan si es seguro salir del país o no. Para empezar es bueno distinguir entre la tarjeta verde o residencia y las diferentes visas que permiten entrar y permanecer temporalmente en el país. La llamada Green Card es un documento que certifica o evidencia la condición de residente permanente de un individuo en Estados Unidos. La Green Card le otorga a las personas que la poseen el derecho a trabajar y vivir permanentemente en este país. Al ser residentes las personas pueden salir y entrar del país, aunque, con el propósito de mantener ese estatus los portadores de una Green Card pueden obtener un permiso de reingreso cuando visitan países extranjeros ya que están sujetos a ciertas regulaciones. Dependiendo de la extensión del viaje un permiso de reingreso puede ser necesario para no perder la Green Card. Salir del país sin que el permiso haya sido aprobado puede ser arriesgado porque es posible que solicitud sea denegada y que eso le cause problemas a la hora del reingreso. Si usted está en un proceso bajo una petición o está esperando respuesta de las autoridades migratorias seguramente no es recomendable que salga del país, sin embargo si desea o necesita hacerlo, es indispensable que consulte su situación particular con su abogado y tome las precauciones del caso. Ahora, muchas personas que permanecen en Estados Unidos están sujetas a las regulaciones

particulares de su tipo de visa. Las visas son en términos generales autorizaciones o permisos de ingreso y estadía temporal que se denominan de acuerdo a su propósito. Así encontramos la Visa de Negocios o B-1, la Visa de Turista o B-2, la Visa de Estudiante o F-1, las Visas H-1B y H-2B de Trabajo o la K-1 que es la Visa de Novios o Fiance entre otras. Cuando los portadores de este tipo de visas ingresan al país a través de un puerto de entrada – como un aeropuerto – deben diligenciar el Formulario I-94 que cumple el propósito de registrar la información de entradas y salidas de todos los visitantes que salen y entran de Estados Unidos. Al ingresar al país usted deberá diligenciar este formulario, parte de él se quedará con el funcionario de inmigración y la otra parte debe quedarse con usted. Usted debe conservar este documento, si lo pierde u olvida entregarlo al salir del país, tendrá problemas si quiere volver porque su archivo permanecerá abierto y usted figurará como alguien que excedió el tiempo de permiso de estadía en el país. En este punto es muy importante aclarar que las visas pueden ser otorgadas por distintos periodos de tiempo, un año, cinco años, diez años. Eso no significa que al ingresar al país usted tenga autorización de permanecer en él por ese mismo tiempo. Es el Formulario I-94 el que indica exactamente cuanto tiempo puede usted permanecer en el país y eso dependerá de su tipo de visa y del funcionario de inmigración que lo reciba en el puerto de entrada y exceder el tiempo de estadía sin pedir una extensión puede traerle problemas, porque usted pasará a ser una persona no autorizada para permanecer en Estados Unidos. De cualquier modo, recuerde que antes de tomar una decisión relacionada con su estadía o su estatus en este país, debe asesorarse correctamente. Como coordinador del Programa de Terrenos Fronterizos del Sierra Club, también se ha propuesto derribar otra “pesadilla,” el muro construido a lo largo de la frontera con México. “Tenemos 649 millas de muros y barreras que se han construido ignorando leyes medioambientales”, dice. “Como resultado, vemos inundaciones, erosión, y la destrucción del hábitat de la fauna”. El muro se construyó en virtud de la Ley REAL ID, la cual en 2005 otorgó al gobierno federal la autoridad sin precedentes de anular cualquier ley que entorpeciera el proyecto. El fracaso del muro confirma una vez más que el problema de la inmigración indocumentada debe atacarse desde su raíz. “El muro no hace nada para solventar los verdaderos problemas, como el Tratado de Libre Comercio, por ejemplo, el cual ha desarraigado a mucha gente en México y les ha obligado a viajar al norte”. Y agrega que invertir en ayuda internacional para mejorar la educación, cuidado de la salud y desarrollo sostenible al sur de la frontera cuesta mucho menos que este despilfarro del dinero de los contribuyentes. En esta era de ladrones disfrazados de banqueros y de contaminadores encubiertos de creadores de empleo, nos queda a todos una insaciable sed de héroes de admirable fuerza moral como Dan Millis. Deaths, he was leaving gallon-sized water jugs scattered along the trails in the Arizona desert used by undocumented migrants. Then, this Good Samaritan and his companions came across the dead body of a young Salvadorian girl who weeks ago had vanished in that unforgiving desert. Two days later, Dan agents of the Fish and Wildlife Service “rewarded” him by serving him with a ticket for littering on federal property with the water jugs. This legal process – he rightly calls it “absurd” and “ridiculous” – culminated more than two-and-a-half years later, when a federal appeals court acquitted him, alleging that “water didn’t meet the definition of waste.” What the judges should’ve considered wasteful was the attempt to punish a humane, exemplary act of kindness. “It’s definitely pretty insulting to have to fight the federal government on something so basic and of common sense as trying to protect people’s human rights,” said Dan, who continues offering his help to those who dare to cross this terrifying desert. Dan, however, isn’t only trying to bring down the wall of cruelty. As coordinator of the Sierra Club’s Borderlands Program, he’s also determined to topple another “nightmare”: the wall built along the U.S.-Mexico border. “We have 649 miles of walls and barriers that have been constructed by mostly ignoring environmental laws,” he said. “As a result, we see floods, erosion, the wildlife being blocked. We see their habitat being destroyed.” The wall was built as part of the REAL ID Act, which in 2005 bestowed on the federal government the unprecedented authority to waive any law that would stand in the way of this project. To date, the building of the wall has eliminated at least 36 laws and cost close to $3 billion. And to top it off, the General Accountability Office has stated this effort has had little impact on the number of migrants crossing into the United States. “The walls don’t work at all,” Dan said. “If anything, they wall people into the United States because it makes it harder to cross back and forth.” But regardless of this spectacular failure, Congress and its myopic legislative approach to this problem is digging deeper into the same hole they’ve dug for taxpayers. The House of Representatives’ Natural Resources Committee recently passed the National Security and Federal Lands Protection Act (House Resolution 1505). This legislative boondoggle would extend the waivers of those 36 laws to a swath of land 100 miles deep into the United States – and all along the U.S.-Mexico and the U.S.-Canada borders. “This is very dangerous,” Dan warned. “It’s an assault on federal lands and environmental laws that (also) uses border security as a convenient Trojan horse.” The failure of the border wall confirms that we need to address the root causes of migration. “The wall doesn’t do anything to address the real problems at the root of this issue, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which has really pushed a lot of people off of their lands in Mexico and made them travel north,” he said. And, he added, investing in international aid to improve education, healthcare and sustainable development south of the border costs less than this current waste of the taxpayers’ money. In this age of thieves disguised as bankers and of polluters portraying themselves as job creators, we all are left with an insatiable thirst for heroes of admirable moral strength such as Dan Millis, who’s fulfilling his duty to bring water to the thirsty. Y menos si va ganando. Era obligado que en la Feria Internacional del Libro en Guadalajara le preguntaran a Peña Nieto sobre libros y no iba preparado. Punto. Yo estuve ahí en la extraordinaria y era lo que todo el mundo comentaba. Durante tres minutos y 16 segundos, interminables, el exgobernador del Estado de México confundió al novelista Carlos Fuentes con el historiador Enrique Krauze y luego se enredó aún más: “No recuerdo el título exacto ... es que quiero recordar el título del libro ... hay uno que salió que eran las mentiras sobre el libro de este libro ... ¿cómo se llamaba el otro libro? ... alguien recuérdeme quién es el autor ... cuando leo los libros me pasa que no registro del todo el título.” (La entrevista puede verse en YouTube.) Por muchos días este incidente ha sido uno de los tópicos más populares en Twitter, en parte, por un retweet que hizo su hija, Paulina. El propio Peña Nieto se disculpó en su cuenta -- “definitivamente fue un exceso” -- y luego ella explicó lo que había pasado: “Fue un impulso de mi parte al leer algunos tweets que ofendían a mi papá y a la memoria de mi mamá.” Esto nos lleva al segundo olvido de Peña Nieto. En marzo del 2009, cuando le pregunté en una entrevista para Univision de qué había muerto su esposa, Mónica Pretelini, a los 44 años de edad, no me pudo responder correctamente: “Ella llevaba dos años de tener una enfermedad parecida a ... se me fue el nombre de la, de la ... el nombre de la enfermedad ... No es epilepsia propiamente, pero algo parecido a la epilepsia.” Decenas de miles vieron ese video en YouTube. Nos volvimos a ver en febrero del 2011 y le comenté a Peña Nieto la sorpresa de muchos cuando él no supo contestarme de qué había muerto su esposa. “Es absurdo pensar, Jorge, que no sepa de qué murió mi esposa”, me dijo. “Fue un lapsus no poderte decir que mi esposa sufría en ese entonces de ataques de epilepsia, que habían derivado en una insuficiencia cardíaca y que eso la había llevado a perder la vida. ¿Cómo no tener claro y conocer esto? Simplemente fue un lapsus.” (Este tema lo trato en el libro Los presidenciables.) Peña Nieto aún no había lanzado su cuenta de Twitter cuando lo entrevisté por segunda vez, pero él alabó las virtudes de las redes sociales que, dijo, facilitan a los votantes conocer la personalidad de los políticos. “Las redes sociales facilitan el mayor conocimiento de un actor de la política. Al final de cuentas, en una carrera por una presidencia, lo que buscan (los electores) es conocer más a la persona, qué piensa, qué haría en ciertos escenarios, qué propone, cuál es su pensamiento, cuáles son sus convicciones, cómo es en lo personal”. Exactamente. Para eso son las campañas; para conocer a los candidatos. Y ahora el gran reto de Peña Nieto es tratar de evitar que esos olvidos personales lo definan y lo tumben. Las encuestas indican que él es el favorito. Pero todos los otros candidatos están esperando un resbalón del puntero. Después de todo, tales errores generan dudas entre los votantes mexicanos: Si Peña Nieto no estaba preparado para hablar acerca de libros en una feria del libro, y si no estaba preparado para explicar adecuadamente las circunstancias de la muerte de su esposa, ¿es capaz entonces de ser presidente? ¿Tiene los recursos para combatir la intensa violencia que sacude a México, para crear millones de empleos y reformar un sociedad en la que, según datos de la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económico, el 10 por ciento más rico de la población gana 26 veces más que el 10 por ciento más pobre? UADALAJARA, Jalisco, Mexico – There he was: Enrique Pena Nieto (Peña Nieto in Spanish), Mexico’s leading presidential candidate, in a discussion conducted before an audience at the Guadalajara International Book Fair, struggling to name the three books that have had the greatest impact on his life. You’d assume questions about books would be expected to come up in an interview at Latin America’s largest book fair. But Pena Nieto, who was among the headline speakers at the recentlyheld event, didn’t seem to have prepared for such questions. So he couldn’t recall any literature that had influenced him, save the Bible, which he admitted to reading parts of when he was younger. For more than three minutes, the former governor of the state of Mexico, now the Institutional Revolutionary Party’s presidential candidate, tried to come up with an answer, mistakenly attributing a book written by novelist Carlos Fuentes to historian Enrique Krauze. He became more entangled with every word. He said: “I don’t remember the exact title.... I want to remember the book’s title.... There was another that was about the lies about the book of this book.... What was the title of the other book?... Someone remind me who the author is.... What happens when I read books is that I don’t often remember the titles.” (The interview is available on YouTube.) Understandably, the incident quickly became a popular topic on Twitter, thanks in part to Pena Nieto’s teen-aged daughter Paulina, who tried to defend her father by retweeting a message from her boyfriend labeling Pena Nieto’s critics as “idiots” from the “proletariat,” to put it nicely. Pena Nieto later apologized on Twitter for his daughter’s “emotional reaction,” which he admitted had been excessive. Although this gaffe is revealing of Pena Nieto’s interest in literature and his level of cultural knowledge, it also tells us something about his forgetfulness – a trait that has surfaced before. In March 2009, during an interview for Univision, I asked Pena Nieto about the death of his wife, Monica Pretelini, in 2007. He couldn’t tell me what had led to her death. He said: “She had been sick for two years of a malady similar to ... I can’t remember the name of the, of the ... the name of the sickness. It’s not epilepsy really, but something similar to epilepsy.” I met with him again last February, after tens of thousands had watched our earlier interview on YouTube. I mentioned to Pena Nieto that many people had been surprised he couldn’t remember details about the illness that had taken his wife’s life. His excuse was that he just couldn’t recall at that moment. “It’s absurd to think, Jorge, that I don’t know what killed my wife,” he said. “It was just a momentary lapse, my not being able to tell you that my wife suffered from epileptic attacks, which led to cardiac insufficiency, which eventually led to the loss of her life.” “How could I not be clearly sure of this and not know it well?” he asked. (Note: I delve into this conversation further in my new book, “Los Presidenciables.”) Pena Nieto hadn’t yet launched his Twitter account when I conducted that second interview, but he extolled the virtues of social networks, which, he said, make it easier for voters to get a better sense of politicians’ personalities. “In a race for the presidency, what (the voters) want is to know more about the candidate,” Pena Nieto told me. “What does he think? What would he do in certain situations? What does he propose? What his ideology is; what his principles are; who he is in his personal life.” Precisely. Enabling voters to get to know candidates is what the campaign season is about. In Pena Nieto’s case, his memory lapses are defining his public image. This is the biggest obstacle in his campaign, rather than any questions about his politics. If he wants to stay on top, he must avoid further moments of forgetfulness. After all, such gaffes spark doubts among Mexican voters. If Pena Nieto wasn’t prepared to speak about books at a book fair – and if he wasn’t prepared to adequately explain the circumstances of his wife’s death – is he capable of being president? Does he have the wherewithal to combat Mexico’s intense violence, to create millions of jobs and reform a society in which, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the wealthiest 10 percent of residents earn 26 times more than the poorest 10 percent? To be fair, every candidate tends to forget things occasionally. During a recent radio interview, Ernesto Cordero, a presidential candidate from Mexico’s National Action Party, criticized Pena Nieto’s confusion about books and listed his own three literary influences, which included “Isle of Passion” by Laura Restrepo. Except Cordero called her “Isabel.” Twice. Nothing can be erased – especially if you’re the leading contender in a presidential contest.

The wreaths have places for four candles, and families light a candle on the wreath each Sunday. *Mexico: Families in Mexico celebrate Christmas by decorating their homes with poinsettias or evergreens. Because the weather is warm, many families also cut designs into brown paper bags before inserting a candle and then setting the designs, called farolitos, along the sidewalk, on windowsills, on rooftops and along outdoor walls. Many communities in the southwestern United States have adopted this tradition, which they often refer to as luminaria. Raymore residents learned recently through City Council member and Mayor Pro Tem Jeffrey Adams that Alonzo was delinquent in filing a 2007 state tax return and paying state income taxes. Adams raised the issue of Alonzo’s eligibility to serve as mayor, questioning whether Alonzo had violated a city ordinance. Joe Willerth, Raymore city attorney, determined that Alonzo’s state tax delinquency didn’t violate city charter provisions. It was his legal opinion that Alonzo remained eligible to be mayor. Alonzo had maintained his eligibility based on the law while owning up to his mistake and apologizing for letting down his constituents. In the Dec. 9 letter tendering his resignation, Alonzo explained his decision. “The citizens of Raymore have a very reasonable right to expect that their elected officials conduct themselves in a manner that is beyond reproach,” he wrote. The letter summarized the accomplishments realized during Alonzo’s tenure and plugged the city of Raymore. Alonzo praised the professionalism of the city staff and thanked civic-minded groups for their involvement. Another factor figured into Alonzo’s decision: the town’s best interests. Recent turmoil has threatened to upset the stability at City Hall that’s made Raymore desirable to developers and newcomers. Over the past two years, council proceedings have been increasingly marked by infighting. “I believe I had become a lightning rod,” Alonzo said to Dos Mundos. “Without me in the mix, maybe the council will settle down and do the things they need to do to continue the progress we started. The groundwork we laid over the last eight years is paying off.” The once “sleepy little city” has emerged as a regional magnet for commercial developers, Alonzo said. It’s undergone a boom in development, fueled by new business-friendly policies, improved city services and a cooperative climate. The population, just 11,000 a decade ago, is closing in on 20,000 – and growing by 30-40 each month. “I’d like to see Raymore continue to grow and prosper, and I’ll continue to work with everybody intent on Raymore’s best interests,” Alonzo said. “It’s a great place to be.” It’s been home to Alonzo since 1991, when he transferred to the south Kansas City-based Marine Corps Support Activity. He retired after 20 years of active duty and works as a financial adviser. He’s an active member of several organizations, including Hope Haven of Cass County, Research Belton Hospital, Raymore Lions Club, St. Sabina Catholic Church and the American Legion. Alonzo was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. When he was 2 years old, his family moved to Uvalde, Texas. Married for nearly 38 years, he and his wife Bessie have three grown sons and three grandchildren. The timing of Alonzo’s resignation means that Raymore voters can elect someone in the April 3, 2012, election to fill his unexpired term. Adams became interim mayor on Dec. 12. He’ll serve until the election. Candidate filing opened on Dec. 13 and will close Jan. 17. “Any and all folks interested in serving Raymore should come forward,” Alonzo said. “I hope more people will become more aware of what’s going on and get involved.”

Rodriguez and Henriquez came off the bench to help the Wildcats win the HyVee Wildcat Classic meeting 71-58 Dec. 17 at Kansas City, Mo.’s Sprint Center. Henriquez, who has Panamanian ancestry, led K-State with 17 points and eight rebounds. Rodriguez, a native Puerto Rican, contributed 13 points and led K-State with seven assists. Martin credited their respective performances to their week of preparation – and a key to their preparation, he pointed out, was their willingness to take instruction from him. “I know it looks like we just kind of walk out there and roll the ball out (on the floor) and run around sometimes, but there’s actually some serious structure in what we try to do – and they were both in tune with it,” Martin said. Rodriguez suggested he benefitted most from Martin’s defense-oriented instructions. Martin’s points of emphasis included getting “to the ball” and trying “to not get stuck in screens,” Rodriguez said. Martin saw evidence of the two’s willingness to take instruction in their defensive play. Sparked by a stingy pass defense and a ball control offense, the Kansas City Chiefs did something Sunday (Dec. 18) at Arrowhead Stadium few people had expected them to do: They defeated the Green Bay Packers 19-14 and gave Romeo Crennel his first win as Kansas City’s interim head coach. Kansas City’s defense held the defending Super Bowl champions to 51 net yards passing (59 gross) during the first half. Although Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers finished with 213 net yards passing (235 gross), a TD pass and a rushing touchdown, he also was sacked four times. Moreover, 87 of Rodgers’ passing yards came during Green Bay’s last possession, when the Packers were trying to rally from a 19-7 deficit. According to Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers, the defensive game plan was the key to containing the Packers, who were averaging 35.8 points per game, leading the NFL in scoring and
