domingo (12 de agosto), después de 17 días de competencia en los Juegos Olímpicos de El Verano en Londres, la flama olímpica se apagó – por
un tiempo. La ceremonia de clausura fue una fiesta espectacular que presentó música de rock y pop. Inglaterra ha jugado un papel importante en ambos géneros al lanzar a artistas fabulosos. Algunos de ellos se presentaron durante el evento. “Estos han sido juegos felices y gloriosos”, declaró Jacques Rogge, Presidente del Comité Olímpico Internacional, quien acto seguido los declaró clausurados y exhortó a la juventud del mundo a reunirse en el 2016 para los próximos Juegos Olímpicos en Río de Janeiro, Brasil. Durante la ceremonia de clausura, el alcalde londinense Boris Johnson entregó la bandera olímpica de los cinco aros a Rogge, quien a su vez la puso en manos del alcalde de Río de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes. A partir de ese momento, Río asumió formalmente la responsabilidad de realizar los próximos juegos de verano. Sunday (Aug. 12), after 17 days of competition at the Summer Olympic Games in London, the Olympic flame was turned off – for a while. The closing ceremony was a spectacular party that featured rock and pop music. England has
played a major role in both genres by launching fabulous artists. Some of those artists performed during the closing ceremony. “These Olympic Games have been happy and glorious,” said Jacques Rogge, of International Olympic Committee president, who urged young people worldwide to gather in 2016 for the next Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the closing ceremony, London Mayor Boris Johnson gave the five-ring Olympic flag to Rogge, who then gave the flag to Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes. At that moment, Rio formally assumed the responsibility of hosting the
next Summer Olympics. After the flag had been passed along, the ceremony featured samba and other music as performed by Brazilian artists, including the rapper BNegrao, Seu Jorge and Mariza Monte. In addition, soccer legend Pele danced onstage. However, British rock and pop were the dominant genres during the ceremony. British singer Annie Lennox performed on the bow of a ghost ship. nueva Cónsul de México en Kansas City recibió con agrado el nombramiento cuando se enteró a finales de julio. “Me entusiasmé mucho porque pienso que ésta es una de las áreas más humanas de la diplomacia”, dijo Alicia Guadalupe Kerber Palma a Dos Mundos. La nativa de la Ciudad de México, de 53 años de edad, llegó a Kansas City el 3 agosto por primera vez. Viajando con ella desde Dublin —donde pasó los tres últimos años como Jefa de Cancillería de la Embajada de México en Irlanda— llegaron sus gemelas de ocho años de edad Alejandra y Laura, su esposo Luis Peraza y su perrito chihuahua Tiny. Dejar Irlanda fue agridulce, pero Kerber comentó: “siempre he trabajado en lugares que realmente disfrutó”. licia Guadalupe Kerber Palma, the new Mexican consul in Kansas City, welcomed the assignment when she learned of it in late July. A “I got very enthusiastic because I think this is one of the most human
areas of the diplomacy,” Kerber said. On Aug. 3, the 53-year-old Mexico City native arrived in Kansas City for the first time. Traveling with her from Dublin, where she’d spent the last three years as deputy head of the Mexican Embassy to Ireland, was her family – 8-year-old twins Alejandra and Laura; husband Luis Peraza; and Tiny, their Chihuahua. Leaving Ireland was bittersweet, but Kerber said, “I’ve always worked in places I really enjoyed.” Kerber has held diplomatic posts in Washington, D.C., as deputy Mexican representative to the Organization of American States and in Colombia and Honduras. A career diplomat, Kerber has a Ph.D. in international public law and undergraduate degrees in law from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. She’s published articles and essays in academic journals in Mexico and elsewhere on international organizations, security and human rights. She speaks English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. Kerber replaces Consul Jacob Prado, who stepped down on June 21 to take up his new post as Mexican consul in El Paso, Texas. He’d been in Kansas City since October 2008 and briefed Kerber when she phoned him upon learning of her new 2A>
El 9 de agosto, el Departamento de Transporte de Kansas organizó una conferencia de prensa en el Departamento de Policía de Kansas City Kansas para anunciar la aprobación de una nueva ley de DUI (Manejar bajo la influencia); y la implementación de un programa para crear consciencia entre la gente del área y proteger a la ciudadanía de los “borrachos profesionales”. “Hemos estado presionando a la legislatura y esta nueva ley nos permitirá detectar las (diversas) amenazas para los conductores”, indicó el fiscal de Distrito del condado Johnson, Steve Howe. Según él, la nueva ley castigará a aquellos conductores que se rehusen a tomar la prueba de sobriedad. “El castigo será el mismo para aquellos que se rehusen como si tomaran la prueba y resultaran positivos”, señaló. Protecting citizens from “professional drunks” New DUI law designed to create awareness about drunken driving behavior By Lilia Garcia Jimenez On Agu.9, the Kansas Department of Transportation held a press conference at the Kansas City Kansas Police Department to announce the approval of a new DUI (Driving under the influence) law, and the implementation of a program to create awareness among people in the area, and protect citizens from “professional drunks.” “We have been pushing the legislature and this new law will allow us to detect the (different) threats for drivers,” said Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe. According to Howe, the new law will punish those drivers who refuse to take the sobriety test. “The punishment would be the same (for those who refuse) as if you take test and it is positive,” Howe pointed out. 7A>
