hen many Mexicans think of the food W of Oaxaca, they think of flavor, color and spices. When many Mexicans in the Kansas City area think of the food of Oaxaca, they’re probably wondering where they can find it. The lack of Oaxacan food in the Midwest pushed the Cruz brothers to open up Tierra del Sol, a restaurant in Kansas City, Kan., that serves dishes that are staples of the southern Mexican state. “I always enjoyed cooking. I already have a restaurant in Topeka but I always wanted to bring up something traditional from Oaxaca – and now was the time to do it,” said Armando Cruz, restaurant owner. The restaurant offers various traditional Oaxacan dishes, including mole Amarillo and tlayudas with tasajo. It also offers burritos,

n April 4, the YMCA and the Unified O Government of Wyandotte County/ Kansas City, Kan., (UG) announced a pro-

posal from the Unified Government to keep the YMCA’s Eighth Street facilities open until Aug. 12, with the possibility of keeping it open until 2014. According to Paula Oxler, YMCA spokesperson, the UG is funding the center with $10,000 a month for operational expenses and $2,500 for capital maintenance. Approval for the funding will be granted once the 2014 budget is accepted. “We are very grateful to the Unified Government of Wyandotte County for their investment,” Oxler said. “This funding will allow us 7A>

Flavor and the menu items make Tierra del Sol unique, according to Cruz. “There is no (other) restaurant in the Midwest that offers tlayudas,” he said. Since opening the business, Cruz has started ordering his products from Oaxaca. They include some chapulines (grasshoppers), which people from Oaxaca eat in tacos with salsa. “We are trying to offer the flavor from south Mexico, and I don’t think you will find that in any other place,” Cruz said. 7A>
