It marked the first time a pope had stepped down in six centuries. *On Feb. 19, emergency crews rushed to Kansas City, Mo.’s Country Club Plaza after a gas explosion had been reported at JJ’s Restaurant. Many witnesses reported hearing

a strong explosion that felt like an earthquake and smelling a strong gas odor. The Kansas City Fire Department had the four-alarm blaze controlled within two hours.

*Around 4:30 p.m. on March 5, Nicolas Maduro, vice president of Venezuela, announced that President Hugo Chavez had died. *After the second conclave gathering, Archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Bergoglio was elected the Catholic Church’s new pope. The archbishop became Pope Francis.

*On April 15, two bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, leaving three people dead, including an 8-year-old boy (see also “2013: The year in sports”). The New York Times reported that the devices used in the attack were similar in size to the device used in the 1996 attack at Centennial Park in Atlanta. *On April 22, a Philadelphia jury began hearing witnesses for the defense of Kermit Gosnell, a 72-year-old physician charged with eight counts of murder in connection with his abortion clinic.

This is a period that opportunely offers pause for reflection. It’s time traditionally reserved for taking stock of our lives and dedicating our thoughts to designing our coming year, our future. It’s time to file the lessons learned from past mistakes, formally let go of failures and past missteps and put an end to waiting for our life to resemble our ideal.

As the poet Ralph Waldo Emerson observed, too much of human life is lost in waiting.

Despite what we might perceive as obstacles, now is the time to decide how to square our life with the ideal and purposefully embark on a plan to achieve it. Resist feeling discouraged and persevere. Keep in mind Henry Ford’s advice, “When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.”

Figure out how to lose or gain that vexatious 10 pounds and do it. Enroll in that class you’ve hankered over or pursue a longed-for degree. Plan the trip of your dreams. Actively seek the kind of employment that you’d find fulfilling and well-paid. Volunteer for that cause you support. Set modest, manageable goals for behaving braver, stronger, kinder, more patient or whatever personal quality you want to improve. The future’s bursting with opportunity. Embrace it with determination, confidence and faith.

Ahora, conforme culmina el año sin un voto en la Cámara de Representantes de EE.UU., al menos la crisis presupuestal ha sido evitada, dando a la Cámara espacio para trabajar en otras cuestiones de fondo a partir del 2014.

Hay muchos republicanos en la Cámara que quieren que surja una reforma migratoria después de que se complete el proceso primario, digamos, en abril del 2014, para que ellos puedan votar por la reforma que sea más popular entre el público en general de lo que es con su base. Now, as the year winds down without a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives, at least the budget crisis has been averted, giving the House room to work on other substantive issues beginning in 2014.

There are many Republicans in the House who want immigration reform to come up after the primary process is complete, say, in April 2014, so they can vote for reform that’s more popular with the general public than it is with their base. Speaker John Boehner has hired a former staffer from U.S. Sen. John McCain’s office who has extensive experience on immigration issues, which may be a sign that the speaker will tackle immigration in a piecemeal manner beginning early in the year.

The president has been getting pressure to curb deportations further, although deportations slowed a little this year. If he were to stop deportations in all cases not involving significant criminal history, conservatives could get behind comprehensive immigration reform, so they could control who does and doesn’t face deportation by how they structure the new law.

In any event, there’s clear momentum heading into 2014. And as comprehensive immigration reform that cuts down on rampant family separation and ultimately leads to earned citizenship is widely popular, it appears more likely that eventually we’ll get reform passed.

The security breach does not affect customers who made online purchases from Target.

The advice posted on Target’s corporate Website is available in English and Spanish.

Customers who used a debit card at a U.S. Target store should call their credit union or bank and request a replacement card and change their PIN (personal identification number).

The security breach at U.S. Target stores gave cybercriminals access to credit and debit card information, including account number, customer name, and card expiration date and security code for 40 million shoppers. The thieves are using the stolen information to create counterfeit cards that they’re selling on the international underground black market.

For the budget conscious, this doesn’t have to be at a restaurant; there are some great sandwich shops that offer healthy, affordable meals! *Take a break from the long drive and walk for 10-15 minutes. This short amount of time can greatly benefit your health. *For close destinations, pack a picnic basket. This is a great way to get the family involved and find a great place to pull over and eat on the way.

When traveling by train: *Get up, walk around and stretch as much as possible. *Take snacks to avoid overeating the full, typically unhealthy foods trains provide. Trail mix and nuts are some of the best options! *Bring a book! The train is the perfect place to relax and stimulate your mind.

While traveling by plane: *Power walk in the airport! Don’t worry, you won’t look weird. Usually, others who are late to their flights are doing the same, so you’ll fit right in! *Plan ahead. If you’re traveling internationally, check to see if they offer a vegan menu or bring your own food that you know you’ll enjoy. *Snack frequently, never allowing yourself to overeat or binge at one sitting. *Keep alcohol to a minimum while traveling, as well as caffeine and sodium. All tend to dehydrate the body. While flying, it’s important to stay hydrated – and it helps prevent the dreaded jet lag!

With these simple tips, you can help keep the pounds off while traveling this holiday season! Remember, being prepared is the key to traveling success!

l día de Acción de Gracias comí desenfrenadamente. A un caballo se le E hubiera hecho dificil brincar sobre el plato que

me serví. Quién me hubiera visto comiendo de esa manera, pensaría que era “mi última cena”, pero con tantos manjares que preparó mi madre fue muy difíl controlarme. Al día siguiente todavía estaba con indigestión y remordimiento. Me pregunté: ¿por qué comí tanto?

Lo que sucede es que estamos acostumbrados a darmos permiso para comer sin control durante esta época de fiestas. Hacemos todo en exceso; comemos mucho, bebemos demasiado, gastamo sin mesura y festejamos casi todos lo días.

Los estudios muestran que la mayoría de las personas, además de endeudarse durante la época navideña, ganan un promedio de seis libras. Hay quienes todavía no han bajado las libras que aumentaron el pasado año, pero eso no los detendrá para comer sin límites en la Nochebuena. Por otro lado están los que aún no han pagado la deuda navideña anterior,

pero como quiera irán de compras y gastarán más este año.

En esta navidad pongámosle un paro a los excesos. Generalmente cuando nos excedemos es porque estamos disfrutando el momento presente, y no estamos tomando en cuenta las consecuencias del futuro. Todos los extremos son dañinos a largo plazo. Haz un listado de todas las situaciones en las que has perdido el balance y mejora tu conducta para el año entrante.

La próxima vez que estés tentado a excederte, reflexiona por unos segundos y hazte la siguiente pregunta: ¿Qué resultados me traerá en el futuro esta acción desmedida?
