During the June checkpoint, a bus was reported to have been on site to immediately transport anyone detained for immediate processing.

that some are coming under the impression the U.S. immigration system will offer them protection while theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re here.

What you might not know is thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a grain of truth to that.

Speaking on the current immigration crisis, Angela Ferguson, an immigration attorney with Austin & Ferguson LLC, said the money the government is spending on tightening border security would be better invested in communicating to foreign populations that the existing immigration system â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even with stalled reform efforts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; affords types of protection to minors escaping an imminent danger such as human WUDIĂ&#x20AC;FNLQJ RU SURVWLWXtion. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But what they need is legal representation,â&#x20AC;?

Ferguson said.

For example, Ferguson said one of the legal avenues available to minors present in the country illegally is to have a legally present adult â&#x20AC;&#x201C; either a citizen or someone with a work permit â&#x20AC;&#x201C; claim responsibility for the minor initiating a process of potentially canceling their deportation. The adult can then advocate for the child in court and acquire guardianship. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(But) thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no way they know about this law,â&#x20AC;? Ferguson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Usually, what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hearing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just kicking them out. You know, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Round â&#x20AC;&#x2122;em up and ship them back,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; is what I think someone said. I think once the child is here on U.S. soil, we have an obligation to protect them from further harm.â&#x20AC;?

Alas, legal help is not typically afforded to them as they try to escape danger. Often, it is violence that Ferguson said is real. Mexican immigrants are typically moved to deportation quicker than Central American immigrants, although thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a growing appetite to give all undocumented populations a quick return as part of the growing investment in border security, she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What we could be doing is spending some of that money letting them know what the facts are,â&#x20AC;? Ferguson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The laws are here to help.â&#x20AC;?

In related news, U.S. President Barack Obama has asked parents in Central America to stop sending their children alone because of the risks they might face when crossing the border.

In other immigration-related news, the Department of Homeland Security recently reported that 40 Honduran children had been deported. The agency also reported there would be more deportations to countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

As of this writing, it is uncertain how many U.S. planes will be used to return the children to their respective home countries.

Since October 2013, U.S. Border Patrol agents have arrested more than 116,000 immigrants crossing illegally into the country. Many are families with small children, and about 57,000 have been unaccompanied youths. Many are from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made the perilous 1,000-mile-or-so trek through Mexico to U.S. territory on foot or by bus through backwoods and over back roads to avoid checkpoints and roadblocks. Some have risked riding north in crowded, hot, airless trucks or by hopping â&#x20AC;&#x153;La Bestia,â&#x20AC;? a cargo train that rumbles north through Mexico from Arriaga in Chiapas.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estimated that up to 400,000 Central American migrants a year enter Mexico illegally. Some stay there. Most set their sights on the United States or Canada. ,PDJHV RI LPPLJUDQWV RYHUĂ RZLQJ WKH top of La Bestia â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Train of Deathâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; have been captured and widely publicized by news organizations and aid and humanitarian groups. Accidents are commonplace.

Riders frequently topple off the train roof and are maimed or fatally injured. Derailments often send railcars tumbling from the tracks, stranding riders â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or worse.

And the hapless riders atop railcars are often shot at along the way.

All courses from Central to North America are dangerous. At every step of the hazardous journey, the migrants are prey to vicious human, drug and gun trafĂ&#x20AC;FNHUV FULPLQDO JDQJV DQG FRUUXSW RIĂ&#x20AC;FLDOV demanding bribes.

This endemic illegal migration requires that the United States, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras cooperatively and immediately curb the Central American migrant surge and then address the underlying causes. Each country must secure its own borders and inform its citizens that, contrary to rumors, illegal immigrants wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be allowed to stay in the United States. Mexico must halt the practice of hitching a ride atop railcars.

Once the Central American exodus declines, then the poverty and gang and drug violence driving it can be tackled.

But “everybody that does fund raising knows there’s a gap right now,” Coleman said.

“What we’ve been able to do in the past is get some grants and fund raising” – support that went missing this year, she added.

he New York Times reported recently that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), which runs the immigration court system, has decided to reprioritize cases to focus on those who are detained and recent arrivals, such as the 50,000 mostly unaccompanied children who are arriving at America’s southern border. Previously, ICE had issued memos on who would be eligible for prosecutorial discretion – and recent arrivals were one of those categories, along with criminals and those who had committed fraud.

Part of the $3.7 billion being requested goes toward hiring new immigration judges or perhaps creating temporary judges from DOJ attorneys to hear the cases of these mostly Central American children as quickly as possible, perhaps reducing their time in the court system from two to three years to several months.

Although the DOJ remains adamant that it won’t alter legal standards currently in place, the mere fact that many unaccompanied children will be expected to navigate the deportation system without assigned legal representation – and without sufficient time to obtain documents, testimony, expert opinions and the like – they are, in effect, doing just that.

In addition, those who are in the deportation system will likely have their cases pushed back if they’re not “recent” arrivals. This means that some who are actively seeking legal status through the immigration court system might have to wait additional years for their day in court.

Imposible confirmarlo, pero fue reportado por fuentes confiables.

Saddam, un sunita, es considerado un mártir por ISIS, el grupo del Estado Islámico de Irak y Siria, que intenta derrocar al gobierno del chiíta Nouri Hasan al-Maliki. Éste es el Irak que nos dejó el ex presidente norteamericano George W. Bush.

La única manera de mantener unidos a sunitas, chiítas y kurdos en Irak ha sido por la fuerza. Así lo hizo el imperio otomano, luego los británicos a principios del siglo XX y posteriormente Saddam Hussein, como dictador, de 1979 hasta la invasión estadounidense en el 2003. Bush, literalmente, no sabía en qué se estaba metiendo.

Ante el temor de otro ataque terrorista, como el del 11 de septiembre del 2001, Bush se inventó la guerra en Irak. La excusa era que Saddam tenía armas de destrucción masiva y que podría utilizarlas contra Estados Unidos. Eran mentiras. El entonces secretario de Estado, Colin Powell, quemó toda su credibilidad en un famoso discurso en Naciones Unidas, antes del ataque a Irak en marzo del 2003.

Vendió humo y espejitos. El resultado es la tragedia que estamos viviendo ahora.

No es correcto mandar a otros a morir sin tener la certeza de una amenaza inminente.

Obama no se quiere volver a meter en Irak. Pero Cheney cree que el Presidente está cometiendo un error garrafal. Ejecutaron a Saddam, un sunita, pero otros sunitas están ahora en control de una tercera parte de Irak.

Todo ha sido inútil.

udge Raouf Abdul Rahman, who sentenced former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to death by hanging in 2006, was reportedly detained and executed in June by Sunni insurgents.

According to news reports, the judge, an ethnic Kurd, was trying to flee Baghdad disguised as a dancer. Although it may be impossible to verify this information through official channels, the chaotic situation on the ground in Iraq has made one thing clear: It is payback time.

Saddam, a Sunni, is considered to be a martyr by members of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the brutal group that’s trying to topple the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite. The country is on the brink of splitting into three independent territories divided along sectarian lines: Shiite, Sunni and Kurd.

This is the Iraq that former President George W. Bush left behind.

It seems that Bush failed to recognize that, for centuries, force was the only way to keep Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds living together in Iraq despite religious strife. This was the case during the Ottoman Empire. It was the case when the British took control of the region in the early 20th century. It was the case during Saddam’s dictatorship from 1979 until the American invasion in 2003.

Following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Bush invented a reason to go to war in Iraq: He claimed Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. In early 2003, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell delivered his infamous smoke-and-mirrors speech to the United Nations, laying out the case for war – and destroying his credibility in the process. The result was the invasion and destabilization of Iraq and the ensuing slaughter between Sunnis and Shiites that threatens to bring down the country.

During the early days of the Iraq War in 2003, I entered the country through the Kuwait border on assignment for Univision. I saw firsthand how, despite what politicians back home had promised, American troops weren’t being welcomed as liberators. I remember seeing many Iraqis’ faces filled with resentment and uncertainty. The war eventually claimed more than 126,000 Iraqis, according to IraqBodyCount. org, and nearly 4,500 Americans.

Mere months after the war had begun, Bush theatrically landed on the USS Abraham Lincoln in a combat plane and delivered a speech in front of a “Mission Accomplished” banner.

This ridiculous spectacle was followed by more casualties in Iraq and years of fighting.

President Obama made good on his predecessor’s promise to pull American troops out of the country by the end of 2011, declaring in December of that year that the United States was leaving behind a “sovereign, stable and self-reliant” Iraq. But the conflict in Syria has contributed greatly to the destabilization of the region. And Sunni rebels, supported by Syrian fighters, have taken advantage of the situation and pushed Iraq to the brink of collapse. Confronted with a self-destructing Iraq, Obama has wisely decided not to intervene. (Editor’s note: At press time, there were 775 U.S. troops in Iraq on embassy and airport security duty, according to The Washington Post.) But the Bush administration’s mistakes endure – and now it’s as though the United States is losing the same war all over again.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney said during a recent interview that the 2003 invasion of Iraq was the right decision. “I still believe it was,” he said, even though thousands of Americans and Iraqis died and those alleged weapons of mass destruction were never found. Cheney also thinks Obama is making a huge mistake by staying out of Iraq now: He has warned this will only encourage terrorists to attack the United States again, with even deadlier consequences than the 9/11 attacks.

But let’s not forget that it was this sort of fearmongering that helped rally American support for going to war in Iraq in 2003, even though the Bush administration never articulated a clear goal. Now, after thousands of American soldiers have perished, the United States looks on as the Iraqi government it left in charge falls apart.

The invasion was futile. This war was no good then. It’s no good now.

According to Niki Lee Donawa, TMC chief of community, the event is designed to provide a fun opportunity to bring families together for a good time and help address their health needs.

“This is the first time we are holding the entire event inside and we don’t have to worry about Mother Nature this time,” Donawa said. “It is going to be fun for all the families.”

During the Touchdown Family Fest, people will have access to free health services, including physicals, vision screenings for children and dental exams. Moreover, massage therapists will be on site to explain the benefits of massages.

Other activities will include music, dance performances, clowns, games and family entertainment. In addition, Chiefs players and cheerleaders will take pictures and sign autographs with those who attend.

“We are trying to bring something new and exciting,” Donawa said.

“We really want to make the community feel they can benefit from it.”

The event is held through the support of multiple sponsors and partners that share TMC’s health priorities. This year’s sponsors include the Neighborhood Tourism Development Fund from the city of Kansas City, Mo.; Amerigroup, KanCare; Metcalf Bank; and Get Your Rear in Gear. In addition, the Chiefs have partnered with TMC to support the event.

According to Donawa, the event has grown from previous years, thanks to great support.

“Leo Prieto and his staff have done a great job (of) putting together this event…. This wouldn’t be possible without them,” she said.

Now what?

The government is launching From Coverage to Care – an initiative that targets you, someone who did the responsible thing and got insured, but still needs help understanding your benefits, deciphering the complex jargon, and getting you and your newlycovered family seen by a doctor.

The education campaign comes with a battery of seminars, which are (for now) offered only in English. Spanish-language events will be planned later, but there are a few steps you can take to start connecting the dots on your own. They include the following: *Check out your insurance card: From there, you should be able to determine easily who your provider is – and consequently, which doctors and services will be “innetwork” and covered. It’ll probably also list your co-pay – or how much you’ll pay for medication or doctor visits – on the card.

A phone number also should appear on the card if you need to reach someone to, say, get a detailed explanation of what’s covered (known as a summary of benefits document). *Know the lingo: “In-network” sounds straightforward enough, but know you also should familiarize yourself with terms such as “deductible” (what you’ll pay before insurance kicks in); and “co-insurance” (what you’ll pay after insurance kicks in, which is usually calculated as a percentage of the amount charged over the deductible). That’s all assuming you’ve paid your “premium,” the amount that’s due monthly or quarterly to maintain your coverage. *Know thyself: Total up all the medications you’re taking and take some time to revisit your medical history. *Find a primary care doctor: Your insurance company will have a list of preferred healthcare providers to help you identify one that’ll work with your plan. And don’t just schedule an appointment when you feel sick, but also make time for regular checkups. Expect to pay no more than $50 for such visits. After you’re done with the visit, ask yourself if you felt comfortable with the treatment you got. *Take some initiative. Exercise regularly, eat well, stop smoking and doing all the other things that might undo all this hard work.

Termómetro KC Por Chara 07/10/14 Autoridades de Kansas City, Mo., informaron que la ciudad tiene una disminución en la tasa de homicidios. Ésta representa la más baja en los últimos 40 años. En lo que va del año se han reportado 34 muertes, lo que representa un 31% menos que el año pasado. Las autoridades quieren continuar bajando esta tasa y se espera poder lograrlo.

07/10/14 Tres hombres que circulaban por la carretera interestatal 35 sufrieron de varios disparos causados por una persona que los agredió sin motivo.

Según versiones de las víctimas, ellas se encontraban manejando cerca de la calle 16 en el área Norte de Kansas City cuando un carro se emparejó junto a sus vehículos y les disparó. Las víctimas sufrieron de lesiones pero se recuperan en un hospital del área.

A la fecha se investiga el paradero del culpable y las causas del incidente.

07/11/14 La policía de Shawnee informó que investiga la procedencia de tres paquetes sospechosos que aparecieron en diversas calles de la ciudad. Uno de ellos estaba envuelto como si fuera un dispositivo explosivo; y los tres fueron encontrados en áreas residenciales. El escuadrón de bombas llegó a los lugares en donde fueron encontrados y comenzaron con la investigación. El contenido de los paquetes no era peligroso.

07/11/14 Las autoridades están investigando el tiroteo en donde un niño de 5 años resultó herido. El incidente tuvo lugar en un complejo de apartamentos en el lado este de la ciudad. La policía informó que el niño estaba sentado con su familia cuando una pistola se disparó dentro del apartamento. La bala atravesó la pared hiriendo la espalda del menor, el cual se encuentra en estado crítico. La policía investiga a la familia para saber quién disparó el arma.

07/12/14 La policía persiguió a un automóvil en Kansas Ctiy, Mo. Las autoridades informaron que una persona en el vehículo no dejaba de tirar cosas desde el interior y lo siguieron pues lo consideraban sospechoso de haber participado en un tiroteo ocurrido previamente en el área. La persona fue puesta en custodia y el incidente está siendo investigado.

07/13/14 Un hombre de 22 años de edad ha sido identificado como el responsable de haber disparado la pistola que hirió a un niño de 4 años. 07/14/14 Un pastor de Kansas fue condenado a 3 años de conducta supervisada al ser encontrado culpable de acoso sexual, además fue culpado de violación. El incidente se suscitó cuando una mujer no tenía dinero para pagarle una deuda y el pastor le exigió le pagara con sexo. Ella grabó una de las visitas que tuvo con él y se lo entregó a la policía, quien detuvo al culpable.

Raymond Diaz

Raymond Diaz, 85, of Kansas City, Mo., died on July 8 at the Marshfield (Mo.) Care Center.

Visitation and burial Mass were on July 14 at Sacred Heart of Guadalupe Church in Kansas City, Mo., followed by burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Kansas City, Kan. He was born on Jan. 10, 1929, in Bayard, Neb., to Antonio Diaz and Patricia Estrada Diaz. They preceded him in death, as did two sisters, Kathryn Mendoza and Virginia Oropeza.

During his life, he worked just two jobs: Armour Packing (20 years) and the U.S. Postal Service (22 years as a letter carrier). He was an active member of the church as a lay minister, choir member, reader and member of the Legion of Mary.

Survivors include Margaret, his wife of 66 years, at home; three children, Beatrice Machetta of Niangua, Mo.; Raymond Diaz Jr. and Michael Diaz, both of Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Esta vez quiero compartirles algo muy importante en la vida familiar y es ¿cómo estoy educando a mis hijos?

Es algo que muchas veces no nos damos cuenta y cuando lo hacemos es demasiado tarde, porque la vida está compuesta de pequeños acontecimientos que sumados se hacen demasiado grandes. Por eso cuestiónese cómo está formando a sus hijos, porque para muchos padres de familia no hay tiempo para sus hijos. ¿Estaré formando UN DELINCUENTE en mi casa?

1. Comience desde la infancia a darle al niño todo lo que pida, así se creará la idea de que el mundo se lo debe todo.

2. Cuando diga malas palabras… celébreselo,

eso lo hará pensar que es muy gracioso.

3. Nunca le dé enseñanzas espirituales, espere a que cumpla los dieciocho años y que él decida para su libre albedrío.

4. Recoja todo lo que deje tirado: libros, zapatos, ropa, juguetes; no le permita valerse por sí mismo, así se acostumbrará a echarle la culpa a los demás.

5. Pelee a menudo con su pareja en presencia del niño, así no se impresionará demasiado el día que se deshaga su hogar.

6. Dele al niño todo el dinero que le pida para sus gastos, nunca permita que se lo gane por sí mismo, ¿Por qué dejar que pase necesidades como las que pasamos nosotros?

7. Satisfaga sus caprichos en lo relacionado con comidas, bebidas y comodidades, la privación le puede causar frustración.

8. Apóyelo en cualquier discusión que tenga

n Estados Unidos, el breakdance suele estar vinculado a la cultura temprana del hip hop y los estilos de la década de 1980.

En la ciudad de Guatemala, está vinculado a la lucha de los jóvenes por escapar de la cultura mortal de las pandillas que los rodea, como hace constar el cineasta de Louisville, Kentucky, Coury Deeb.

Deeb dirigió y produjo “BBoy de por Vida”, un análisis de las subculturas del breakdance y los pandilleros en la ciudad capital de Guatemala.

Una producción de Nadus Films, el documental recientemente lanzado se distribuye a través de New World Distributions y co-distribuido a través de Aspiration Media. Se ha mostrado en festivales de cine y en una versión de cine limitada, está disponible en algunos mercados de satélite y televisión por cable, así como en Internet para rentar o comprar, de acuerdo con Deeb.

“La mayor parte de su baile se lleva a cabo en y alrededor del gueto”, informó durante una entrevista telefónica reciente. “De vez en cuando, puede haber una competencia que los lleva fuera de sus barrios y de la ciudad. Pero principalmente, ... ellos están bailando en las calles y en escenarios que están ... aún dentro de (los) límites de la ciudad - y aún así ... en zonas muy orientadas a las pandillas”.

A veces, los bailarines participan en concursos por recompensas monetarias, pero esa no es la razón principal por la que ellos bailan, según Deeb.

“El breakdance es una forma de expresión para ellos - en vez de unirse a una pandilla y expresarse a través de la violencia y la actividad criminal”, señaló.

El escenario del breakdance “ha sido fuerte” en Guatemala desde hace 20 años, estimó el cineastsa, quien se enteró sobre la subcultura del breakdance de la ciudad de Guatemala durante una visita al país en busca de algunas ideas para una historia. Mientras estuvo allá, experimentó de primera mano la vida en los tugurios de la ciudad centroamericana.

“Estuve durmiendo y viviendo en el gueto allá por un poco de tiempo”, recordó.

Eventualmente, llegó a los tres sujetos en el corazón de su película: Cheez y Gato “un dueto de breakdance que también participa con el grupo de danza Poker Crew— y Leidy, una joven madre y ex convicta que está tratando de dejar atrás la vida de pandillera que tuvo mientras crecía. Leidy ayuda

and around the ghetto,” he said during a recent telephone interview. “Occasionally, there may be a competition that does take them outside of their neighborhoods and the city. But predominantly, … they’re dancing on the streets and dancing on stages that are … still within (the) city limits – and still … very (much) gangoriented areas.”

Sometimes, the dancers will participate in competitions for prize money, but that’s not the primary reason they dance, according to Deeb.

“The breakdancing is a form of expression for them – as opposed to joining a gang and expressing themselves through violence and criminal activity,” he said.

The breakdancing scene has “been strong” in Guatemala for about 20 years, estimated Deeb, who learned about Guatemala City’s breakdancing subculture during a visit there to pursue some story ideas. While there, he experienced the Central American city’s slum life firsthand.

“I was sleeping and living in the ghetto down there for a little bit of time,” he recalled.

Eventually, Deeb was led to the three subjects at the heart of his film: Cheez and Gato, a breakdancing duo who also perform with the Poker Crew dance troupe; and Leidy, a young mother and ex-convict who’s trying to leave behind the gangbanger lifestyle she lived while growing up. Leidy helps Deeb connect his examinations of the two groups through her son Gerald, an aspiring break dancer.

Since finishing the film, Deeb has stayed in touch with the film’s three primary subjects. In fact, Gato and Cheez recently visited Louisville for a special event and won a breakdancing contest there, he said. Deeb believes “it’s inevitable” for him to visit Guatemala City again and follow up on how their lives have changed since “BBoy for Life” was made.

“But there’s no specific time frame scheduled … for when I’m … (going to) return to Guatemala,” he said.

n the United States, break dancing is typiI cally linked to early hip-hop culture and 1980s fads.

In Guatemala City, it’s linked to the struggle of young people to escape the deadly gang culture that surrounds them, as Louisville, Ky.-based filmmaker Coury Deeb will attest.

Deeb directed and produced “BBoy for Life,” an examination of the breakdancing and gangbanger subcultures in Guatemala’s capital city. A production of Nadus Films, the recently released documentary is being distributed through New World Distribution and co-distributed through Aspiration Media. It has played at film festivals and in limited theatrical release, is playing in some satellite and cable TV markets and is available online for rental or purchase, according to Deeb.
