At about 5 p.m. that day, Leal gave a press conference before news cameras on the state of events and was then still unsure how the building would hold up after the disaster. That evening, another chunk of the building came crashing down. A KCTV5 reporter was interviewing a city inspector when another piece of the church resigned to its weight and collapsed. Preliminary investigations show the age of the building – which was built in 1931 – combined with both structural deficiencies and heavy rainfall on Aug. 6 all played a part in the collapse. Although Leal mourned the loss of the 83-yearold home to his 150-member worship community, he was equally stunned that all the lives endangered during its collapse were spared. “First of all, I thank (God) for this miracle,” the visibly shaken pastor said during a press conference immediately following the church’s collapse. “You can clearly see the hand of God in this.” Speaking on Monday (Aug. 11), Leal said he was still waiting for engineers and insurance personnel to deliver a final verdict on the state of the building. The city’s dangerous buildings department has ordered the building to be demolished. The church worshipped this past weekend in Kansas City, Kan., in a loaned space. “We need to give thanks to God and move forward,” Leal said. “The building can fall, but we as a church need to remain standing.” A network of sister congregations will host the worshippers in the months to follow, Leal said, adding that he offers his gratitude to the faith leaders supporting his orphaned congregation. He offers the same gratitude to the news outlets that are following the church’s journey.

ecently in Poplar Bluff in southeast Missouri, high school athletic coaches saved the life of a sophomore who collapsed and stopped breathing during football practice. A trainer and a coach performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on the 15-year-old until an ambulance arrived. The coaches and staff had just been certified in CPR. Exactly two weeks earlier on Aug. 1, two employees at a Driver Examination Office in Raytown saved the life of a 43-year-old mother who suffered a heart attack at the counter. The workers administered CPR on the woman while an ambulance was called. They’d recently taken a CPR refresher course. A few days earlier on July 23, Hortensia Camerino had a heart attack outside her Kansas City, Kan., home. The 77-year-old widow died while she and her daughter, Berty Cabral waited for help to arrive. Cabral told a reporter that she’d felt helpless because she didn’t know CPR. Nearly a half-million people in the United States suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year; less than 8 percent survive, according to the American Heart Association. But that’s changing as a result of increased CPR training. It teaches how to keep the victim’s heart beating until professional help arrives. Administering CPR immediately can double or even triple a cardiac arrest victim’s survival chances. The importance of being trained is obvious. None of us knows when our training could mean life or death for a loved one. The training only takes about three hours and costs less than the price of a new pair of shoes. Area nonprofits offer CPR training to individuals in scheduled classes on-site and conduct group training on request at workplaces, churches and other organizations. They include the American Heart Association in Overland Park and the Kansas City chapter of the American Red Cross and the Wyandotte and Atchison County chapters of the American Red Cross. Some local hospitals offer various CPR and first aid classes, too. Anyone can learn CPR, says the American Heart Association. And keep this in mind: “88 percent of all sudden cardiac arrests occur at home, and victims can appear healthy with no known heart disease or other risk factors.” The life someone trained in CPR saves is most likely to be a family member, friend or neighbor.

*Check your heating and air conditioning system: Even if you don’t use your heating and air conditioning system much, it’s necessary to check it regularly to make sure it works. That way, you’re not in trouble when rain and snow arrive. *Check your tires: Make sure your tires are in good condition to prevent accidents. Check your tire pressure and the condition of your treads. If you need to change your tires, check online for promotions and find the store with the best deal. *Check all your fluids: Vehicles use many kinds of fluids to keep working, including antifreeze, brake fluid and power steering fluid. By checking the fluids, you’ll make sure your vehicle is working properly and avoid outrageous repair expenses. *Before the winter arrives, take your vehicle to a mechanic for a checkup: Find a mechanic you trust and make sure your vehicle is working properly.

Family courts hold key for child migrants

In such cases, the children and their representatives go to their local family court for an order that it’s not in their best interests to return to their home country and cannot be reunited with one or both of their parents because of abuse, abandonment, neglect, etc. This normally has to be in the contest of an order for protection. A change in 2008 allows the possibility that children who are in the United States with one of their parents, but can’t be reunited with their other parent based on past abuse, abandonment, etc. For children abandoned by both of their parents and in the United States alone or with a different relative, SIJS is a great option that leads to permanent residence. One of the keys will be to get these kids through the process as quickly as possible, as the immigration courts are seeking to deport them as soon as they can. NUEVA YORK - ¿Por qué hablamos con Hillary Clinton? ¿Por qué esa obsesión con todo lo que hace y dice? Por una sencilla razón. Porque en el 2016, podría convertirse en la primera presidenta de Estados Unidos. Por eso. Su libro, “Hard Choices” (publicado como “Decisiones Difíciles” en español) se convirtió inmediatamente en un bestseller (aunque no con las ventas que se anticipaban por un adelanto de $13 millones de dólares). Pero no todo se mide en dinero. El libro sugiere el mismo camino que han seguido otros exitosos candidatos presidenciales: primero lo publican y luego anuncian la candidatura. “No sé todavía si me voy a lanzar”, me dijo. En cambio, la sentí muy emocionada por convertirse pronto en abuela. Su hija Chelsea dará a luz este otoño. Chelsea “es lo mejor de nosotros dos”, comentó, refiriéndose a ella y al ex presidente Bill Clinton. Mi entrevista no tuvo nada de exclusiva. NEW YORK – Lately, American media outlets have been obsessed with everything Hillary Clinton says and does. Their interest is understandable: In 2016, Clinton could become the first female U.S. president. But will she run? That is, of course, the biggest question on everyone’s mind. “I’m not sure I’m going to run,” she told me during a recent interview in Lower Manhattan. (Note: Our conversation can be seen at fus. in/1k6r51H.) These days, Clinton seems to be more excited about becoming a grandmother – Chelsea, her daughter, is expecting a baby this fall – than about possibly being elected to the nation’s highest office. Chelsea is “the best of both of us,” Clinton said, referring to herself and her husband, former President Bill Clinton. We also discussed her recently published memoir, “Hard Choices,” which quickly became a national best-seller – although perhaps not as popular as the publisher had expected, given Clinton’s $13 million book advance. Still, not all value can be measured in dollars. With “Hard Choices,” Clinton is following a well-worn path that has led other presidential candidates to success: Publish a memoir and then jump into the race. I was especially interested in hearing Clinton’s views on issues south of the U.S. border – specifically, the waves of Central American children who are journeying to this country, the consequences of gang violence in Honduras, the deaths caused by drug trafficking in Mexico and the prospect of ending the American embargo against Cuba. As to how the United States should handle the nearly 60,000 Central American children who’ve crossed the border during the past year, Clinton said that “some of them should be sent back.” I asked whether that might mean a death sentence for many children who are fleeing violence in their home countries. “I don’t know that you can make a blanket statement,” she said. “I think some children have legitimate concerns. Part of our problem is our laws are not particularly appropriate for what we’re facing right now.” Clinton, who was secretary of state from 2009 to 2013, said that each child belongs in one of two categories: “refugee” children feeling violence, who should receive asylum and protection; and “migrant” children, who should be treated humanely, but should eventually be deported. She also advocates identifying children threatened by violence in countries such as Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala before they embark on a dangerous journey to the United States and risk falling prey to traffickers, rapists or murderers. When it comes to drug violence in Mexico, as secretary of state, Clinton dared to say what other American officials hadn’t. “Drug trafficking is not only Mexico’s problem,” she said during a 2009 news conference in Mexico. “It is also an American problem. And we in the U.S. have a responsibility to help you address it.” Clinton’s critics accused her of apologizing for the United States. I asked her if she regretted making those statements. “Not at all,” she replied. “Mexico was facing such an onslaught of murder and violence from the drug cartels. And why was that happening? Because of the drug market in the United States of America, and I thought it was important to say that.” I also asked Clinton about her views on relations with Cuba. When Bill Clinton was president, he never visited Cuba. In 1996, when it seemed that inroads toward a better relationship with thenCuban dictator Fidel Castro might be possible, two airplanes from the non-profit organization Brothers to the Rescue were shot down by a Cuban fighter jet. After that incident, relations with Cuba hardened. Now, Hillary Clinton thinks it’s time for a change. The embargo against Cuba “has been a failure – and it has propped up the Castros, because they can blame everything on the embargo,” she said. Ending the embargo would be a good first step. “I would like to see us move toward the normalization of our relations,” she said. “You know, someday, I’d like to go to Cuba.” Clinton, who considers herself a “feminist” – which is defined as “someone who believes in full and equal rights between women and men,” as she pointed out – seems to be laying the groundwork for a presidential run. senté al lado de un caballero de cara familiar y traté de acordarme dónde lo había conocido. Antes del despegue le pregunté: “¿Nos conocemos?” y dijo: “No creo”. En ese instante me di cuenta que se trataba de Bobby Collins, quien me ha hecho carcajear en sus numerosas apariciones de televisión. Durante el vuelo me asombró con fascinantes anécdotas de su vida. Me contó que los primeros años de su profesión fueron muy difíciles, casi imposible conseguir trabajo. Por fin, un día le llamó el dueño de un reconocido club de comedia para contratarlo. Bobby no podía creerlo, ésta era la oportunidad que esperaba y una vez que se presentara en un club de ese calibre, se le abrirían puertas más grandes. Aunque el dueño le ofreció poco dinero, él exclamó: “Será un honor trabajar allí”. El dueño respondió: “Lo espero el 24 y 25 de diciembre”. El individuo fue arrestado por las autoridades y se le ha impuesto una fianza de $2 millones para su liberación. De ser encontrado culpable, podría pasar más de 30 años en la cárcel. 08/09/14 Autoridades de Kansas City, Mo., están investigando un tiroteo ocurrido en Southwest Blvd., cerca de la calle Broadway. sigue. Sí, es la policía. Y casi seguro con un Dodge Charger. Para muchos el vehículo más odiado del mercado. Hay algo en él que lo convierte en el carro perfecto para la policía. En todo negro, es agresivo hasta el punto de la intimidación. Ciertamente, las fuerzas del orden se siente de la misma manera, por lo tanto, hay nuevos Charger en camino para ellos. Para el 2015, Dodge está ofreciendo una serie de mejoras, incluyendo una nueva parrilla en forma de cruz, DRL y faros de LED. Dodge afirma que la carrocería inclinada hacia adelante le da una postura de “superhéroe”. No se si será así, pero sin duda se ve tan agresivo como siempre. La parte trasera mantiene el mismo bar completo LED configurado como antes, que son fáciles de detectar por la noche, junto con la adición de una cámara de seguridad.
