Mexico’s victory over the French army on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla. Cinco de Mayo isn’t celebrated the same way in Mexico as it is in the United States. In Mexico, it’s celebrated with a parade that’s attended by important military officers and Mexico’s president. In the United Sates, people observe Cinco de Mayo by enjoying various elements of Mexican culture – music, food, beverages, traditional dances – often in a festival setting. In other words, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo means party time. In the Kansas City area, there will be many Cinco de Mayo celebrations, such as the following:

*Cinco de Mayo at Guadalupe Centers Inc. (GCI): The celebration kicks off when the doors open at 5 p.m. on Friday (May 1) with a concert. The cost is $7. The celebration will continue on Saturday (May 2) with a race followed by the festival from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and 1-8 p.m. Sunday (May 3) with family music and entertainment. Admission on Saturday and Sunday is free. All the money raised during the festival goes toward supporting GCI’s programs.

*Our Lady of Unity Parish Third Unity Dinner: From 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, the parish will host this celebration at the Pierson Community Center, located at 1800 S. 55th St. in Kansas City, Kan. The celebration is for adults only. Admission is $35 and includes dinner, dancing and beverages. in honor of the day … food for thought. The holiday commemorates Mexico’s victory over French forces at Puebla de los Angeles in Puebla, Mexico on May 5, 1862. Under the command of Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza the Mexican militia successfully defended the 16th century city. Though outnumbered, raw and poorly provisioned and armed, they defeated Gen. Charles Latrille de Lorencez’s mighty, experienced, wellsupplied forces. It wasn’t a decisive battle, but its symbolism was momentous. The Mexican militia was made up largely of indigenous Mexicans loyal to President Benito Juarez. They’d been hastily recruited after French troops set off to capture Puebla. The drubbings of the seasoned French forces by Zaragoza’s ragtag barefoot band of peasant soldiers invigorated the movement to end French imperialism in Mexico and provided a symbolically morale-boosting win for Mexican selfgovernment. Mexico’s victory also helped prevent the French from aiding the Confederacy against the Union in the U.S. Civil War. In many places in Mexico, there are parades, re-enactments of the battle and other events commemorating Cinco de Mayo, but nowhere on the same scale as in Puebla where it’s an official state holiday. Here in the U.S., having begun in cities with significant numbers of Mexican-Americans, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a full-scale celebration of vibrant Mexican heritage and culture. In some communities, festivities last all weekend. Observances include parades, festivals, performances of traditional Mexican music and dance, poetry readings, arts and crafts, art exhibits, Mexican food and beverage selections and more. Honoring the valiant Juaristas who fought off the mighty French army 153 years ago doesn’t need to ordain our menu choices. What matters is commemorating their bravely fought victory. Their triumph likely affected the outcome of the U.S. War Between the States and inspired the eventual defeat of the French in Mexico, bringing to an end European expansionism in North America.

*Bonito Michoacan Cinco de Mayo Festival: This is the seventh year that Bonito Michoacan will host its traditional parade and festival. Everything starts at 9 a.m. on May 9 at Fourth Street and Minnesota Avenue in Kansas City, Kan. Horses, music and food will be part of the festivities.

*Wyandotte County Cinco de Mayo Festival: The festival parade will begin at noon on May 9 at the cross sections of 11th, 12th and 13th streets and Minnesota Avenue in Kansas City, Kan. Food, music, entertainment and moon walks will be part of the festival activities.

Several aftershocks have been reported since the earthquake. Some of them have reached a magnitude of greater than 6.0. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry issued a statement saying the United States would support Nepal during this difficult time. Several Web sites have implemented online tools to provide help to Nepal. Organizations that are accepting donations include the American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) and UNICEF (www.unicef.org). Organizations wanting to send supplies to Nepal may send them by air. Kathmandu’s international airport is open. It was opened hours after the earthquake to start receiving international help. On related news, Heart to Heart International is working on its relief effort. “We are sending a team to Nepal and will also be shipping needed supplies,” informed a spokesperson from the organization. Donations to help with this effort –can be directed to hearttoheart.org to donate directly to the Nepal Quake Relief.

o hay nada que asuste más al presidente de México, Enrique Peña Nieto, y a su gabinete, que saber que la periodista Carmen Aristegui los está investigando. Primero, porque seguramente va a destapar otro escándalo, otra injusticia, otro acto de corrupción. Y, segundo, porque es incorruptible; ella dice la verdad. Hay muchos “periodistas” en México que, en realidad, son la voz del gobierno. No lo cuestionan. Son amigos de los funcionarios — comen con ellos y van a sus fiestas. Estar cerca del poder, supongo, tiene sus beneficios. Pero Aristegui no está cerca del poder. Más bien, lo enfrenta. Ella y su equipo de Aristegui Noticias descubrieron a finales del año pasado que la esposa del presidente, Angélica Rivera, había recibido un financiamiento de un contratista del gobierno, Grupo Higa, para comprar una casa en Las Lomas valorada en $7 millones [de dólares]. La explicación dada por la primera dama de México no resulta suficiente ni convincente. Esa casa fue diseñada al propio gusto del Presidente de la república”. La empresa MVS, argumentando pérdida de confianza (entre varias cosas), despidió de su espacio radiofónico a la periodista y su equipo. Eso no tiene mucha lógica comercial, ya que el programa era exitoso y rentable, ni profesional (ya que gozaba de muchísima credibilidad). Por eso Aristegui cree que la oficina presidencial tuvo algo que ver con su despido. “Claramente me parece que es un caso de censura”, me aseguró. “Una interrupción abrupta, brutal de un trabajo periodístico. No hay un documento que demuestre (la censura). Pero uno tiene que pensar cuál es la mano que mueve la cuna”. No hay manera de probar una intervención directa del Presidente de México en su despido. Pero él es el primero que se beneficia al tener fuera del aire a su principal crítica. “Claro que extraño el aire”, me dice. “Es parte de mi vida”. No, no se metería a la política, “pues porque yo quiero ser periodista”. ¿Tienes miedo que te maten?, le pregunté. “Te confieso que no me lo planteo”, reflexiona. “Temer que te maten engarrota a cualquiera”. (Desde el año 2000 han matado a más de 80 periodistas en México; es uno de los países más peligrosos del mundo para ejercer la profesión). Y luego me explicó por qué hace lo que hace: “La tarea de los periodistas es observar críticamente los fenómenos del poder. Y, normalmente, lo que se observa son las fallas, la corrupción, las debilidades, las triquiñuelas”. Hablemos de triquiñuelas. Además de las irregularidades de la “Casa Blanca”, el diario The Wall Street Journal denunció que Peña Nieto, antes de llegar a la presidencia, compró en el 2005 una casa en efectivo a la corporación de los San Román en Ixtapan de la Sal. Esa corporación ha recibido millones de dólares en varios contratos gubernamentales desde que él llegó a la presidencia. ¿Debe renunciar Peña Nieto?, le pregunté. “En México no existe la figura legal (de revocación de mandato)”, me explica Aristegui. “Lo que sí existe es el pulso que pueden darte las encuestas”. Más de la mitad de los mexicanos tienen una opinión negativa del gobierno de Peña Nieto, según varios sondeos. Y se están explorando formas de que la gente exprese su rechazo a Peña Nieto en las próximas elecciones legislativas. ¿Te has equivocado en algo?, le pregunté. ¿Pudiste haber manejado este conflicto de otra manera? “Las personas y los periodistas nos podemos equivocar una y mil veces”, me contestó. “Pero en el capítulo que nos ocupa lo que existe es una acción indebida, premeditada, cuya única pretensión es sacar del aire a esos periodistas”. Aristegui y su equipo presentaron un demanda para obligar a la empresa MVS a que los reinstalen. La decisión está ahora en manos de los tribunales. ¿Qué has aprendido de todo esto?, le pregunté. “He aprendido muchas cosas”, me dice con una sonrisa, “quizá hasta un poco de derecho, por todas las demandas ... Esa es la batalla. Que a nadie le queda duda que nuestra intención es que no se consume un golpe autoritario”. No queda duda. Ésta es la voz de Carmen Aristegui, la voz que hace temblar al presidente.

And we can count on Aristegui to tell the truth. In Mexico, many “journalists” tend to act as mouthpieces for Pena Nieto’s government. They don’t dare question the actions of officials; in fact, they maintain personal relationships with them, dining with them and attending their parties. For many people working in the Mexican media, being close to power has its perks. But Aristegui doesn’t want to be close to power. She wants to confront it. Her team at Aristegui Noticias revealed in late 2014 that the president’s wife, Angelica Rivera, had financed a luxury home in 2012 worth $7 million (dubbed Mexico’s “White House”) in the exclusive Mexico City neighborhood of Las Lomas. She bought the home from a subsidiary of Grupo Higa, a company that has received millions in government contracts. Rivera and Pena Nieto have denied that any wrongdoing occurred in this deal – and it’s difficult to know if any impropriety occurred. However, the conflict of interest is painfully clear. In some nations, the first lady doing personal business with a government contractor would cost the president his job. But not in Mexico. Pena Nieto kept his job – and Aristegui and her fellow journalists lost theirs. A few months after reporting the story about Rivera’s home, radio network MVS fired Aristegui and her investigative team. The network said she was fired for violating an unrelated company policy, which she denies. Aristegui’s show was popular and profitable, and it was widely respected. Understandably, she suspects Pena Nieto’s administration had something to do with her dismissal. “This clearly looks like a case of censorship,” she told me during a recent interview. “Clearly, everything that has happened in this sad episode has all been a sudden, brutal interruption of our journalistic efforts.” Aristegui added that she has no concrete evidence that the administration was involved in her dismissal, but Pena Nieto benefits greatly from having her off the airwaves. “You have to wonder which hand is rocking the cradle,” Aristegui said. “Of course, I miss being on the air,” she said. “It’s part of my life.” I asked Aristegui if she ever considered leaving journalism and entering politics. She said no. “I want to be a journalist,” Aristegui said. Since 2000, more than 80 journalists have been killed in Mexico, mostly at the hands of violent drug cartels, making it one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be a reporter. I asked Aristegui if she feared for her life for reporting the news. “I have to admit that I don’t think about it,” she said. “Fear of being killed freezes anyone.” Then, Aristegui explained why she does what she does. “A journalist’s job is to critically observe the phenomenon of power,” she said. “And usually, what you end up observing are the failures, the corruption, the weaknesses, the chicaneries.” Let’s discuss some of those chicaneries. Besides the scandal surrounding the “White House,” The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that, shortly after taking office in 2005 as governor of the state of Mexico, Pena Nieto bought a home in Ixtapan de la Sal from the San Roman corporation. As with Grupo Higa it has won public contracts worth millions of dollars since. Although Pena Nieto’s ownership of the home was publicly disclosed, the seller was not – until this year. Given the fact that more conflicts of interest have surfaced, I asked Aristegui whether Pena Nieto should resign. “In Mexico, there is no legal procedure (for a recall election),” she said. “What does exist is the pulse of the public through opinion polls.” And according to polls, more than half of the Mexican electorate has a negative opinion of Pena Nieto’s administration. Many voters, in fact, are exploring ways to express that disapproval in the country’s upcoming legislative elections. Meanwhile, Aristegui and her team have filed a legal complaint against MVS – and they want the network to rehire them. The decision is in a judge’s hands. I asked Aristegui what she has learned from all this. “I’ve learned a lot of things,” she said. “Maybe even a little law, but that’s the struggle. Nobody should doubt that our intentions are to keep an authoritarian coup from being completed.” And there’s no doubt that Carmen Aristegui’s makes the president tremble. The Dallas suburb got a cursory mention after Sharp had received the Mickey Dean Leadership and Commitment Award, a prize eponymously named after a former Kansas City Civil Rights Enforcement Division chief. Sharp wanted to draw attention to the city as an example of what he sees as two great evils weakening society: hate groups and antiimmigrant sentiment. The Texas suburb passed – and then was forced to defend in court – a city ordinance preventing undocumented immigrants from accessing rental homes. Speaking on Tuesday (April 28), Sharp called the laws that “targeted” immigrants “vicious.” On the same note, the outgoing city councilman tied in a more local figure: Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. “I mentioned him by name,” Sharp said. “I don’t know where he finds the time (to craft this legislation). I was under the impression he had a full-time job.” Sharp’s recognition was given during the Seventh Annual Civil Rights Summit, a conference held on April 24 at the Sheraton Hotel involving civic and business leaders in a discussion about increasing fairness for the city’s minority communities in housing, employment and healthcare access. Sharp, whose term ends this summer, received an award alongside a recognition given for U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II. “I greatly appreciate receiving the award,” Sharp said, calling it a recognition “named after someone who has been steadfast in his commitment to equal opportunity for all.” “Mickey Dean was … a tireless advocate for fairness for all people,” he said. Pamela Meanes, National Bar Association president, was the event’s keynote speaker. Meanes gave an address making the case for federal legislation requiring law enforcement officers to wear body cameras, a measure Sharp has vocally supported. (Note: The Kansas City Police Department is evaluating equipping all its officers with body cameras.) “I think, generally, everybody acts a little better if they know their actions are being recorded, both the officers and the citizens,” Sharp said. Sharp supports a measured approach to the suggestion, so there are rules to protect certain people from recording, such as sexual assault victims and informants. “(However), I think in the vast majority of cases, they will show – as they have in the cities that have implemented them – that (the) officers acted appropriately,” he said. “I think it protects the officers, the good ones.” “(I)t makes sense to know exactly what the rules are going to be for their use before you implement the system, but it shouldn’t take years and years,” Sharp also said. Sharp has said the cameras have worked to reduce tensions between the public and the police, an idea that ought to be welcome, given the national conversation on law enforcement brutality. Speaking on the Baltimore protests associated with death of an unarmed black man by the police, Sharp said the violence, although unproductive and ultimately more harmful than justified, is understandable. “I do think it shows the sense of hopelessness and rage that many young people of color from impoverished neighborhoods have,” he said. “People have to be treated fairly. Their lives have to be respected and they have to have decent opportunities.” Sharp has a biracial son, who the councilman anecdotally said has been pulled over for, in his words, “driving while black.” He also said the conversations with his son about the police have gotten serious after the Ferguson, Mo., protests. “It’s a shame you have to talk to your children about being very careful in how they interact with law enforcement,” Sharp said. “But for young men of color in particular, you have to have that conversation today.” “Rather, you still have to have that conversation,” he added. Still, Sharp said he remains optimistic. Take the Texas town with the housing ordinance penalizing undocumented immigrants, for example. In 2014, the Kobach-authored legislation was overturned after the Supreme Court had declined to take up a lower court’s ruling against the Dallas suburb.

Cada vez que quiero saber de ti, te llamo y ya está”. ¡Qué bien! ¡De cuánta paz, tranquilidad e, incluso, amor, podemos disfrutar gracias a esos aparatos surgidos del ingenio humano! Eso es ser moderno, vivir acorde a los tiempos, saber aprovechar la tecnología en aras de la felicidad espiritual. Sin embargo, la inclinación de estar siempre “enganchados” a uno de esos aparatos modernos, conspira contra la propia esencia humana, sobre todo, contra nuestro rico mundo interior. La tecnología no es mala en sí misma, sino todo lo contrario, maravillosa; pero su uso inadecuado tiende a distorsionarnos lo natural,

lo elemental y lo bello. ¿Lo primero que haces cuando te levantas es revisar tu email, aunque no esperes algo importante?
