are trapped in an industry characterized by unimaginable violence and exploitation. “Every day in the U.S., young women and girls are held prisoner by criminal networks that sell sex in cantinas and bars right in our backyards,” Polaris CEO Bradley Myles said. “If we want to stop the victimization of … (Latinas) in these highly abusive venues, we have to change the equation for traffickers by disrupting the business model and making the crime high-risk and low-profit.” “More than Drinks for Sale” is based on data gleaned from Polaris’ normal interactions with individuals contacting the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline and BeFree Textline. Its findings included the following: *Of the potential victims, 96 percent were female, typically from Mexico or Central America – and 63 percent were minors. *Nearly a third of the traffickers were women and 67 percent were men. *Of the traffickers, 70 percent were of Latin American descent, and at least 35 percent of them were U.S. citizens. *Sixty-two percent of the victims reported having been confined or physically isolated in some way. *Of the victims, 51 percent reported economic abuse, including wage theft or the imposition of unattainable debts. *Of the victims, 34 percent were recruited through smuggling-related tactics. *At least 29 percent received fake job offers, only learning the real nature of the work upon arrival. *Of the victims, 31 percent reported commercial sex clients as a primary point of access to help. *Fourteen percent interacted with law enforcement or immigration officials; however, in most cases, the contact didn’t lead to their identification as victims. *Of the victims, 19 percent reported accessing health care services. They find the variety of cultural choices impressive. “I make a great effort to give a little of my time to those activities,” Navarro-Bernachi said. He came from Mexico City where he served as deputy director general for consular protection of Mexicans abroad. He’s a 23-year veteran of Mexico’s foreign service. Previous tours of duty include deputy consul general in Phoenix, Ariz., and San Diego, Calif., and in the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador. On Aug. 12, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City hosted a formal welcome event. It gave Navarro-Bernachi the opportunity to meet area leaders. Since taking office, he has attended meetings across his consular district, which takes in all of Kansas and Missouri and western Oklahoma. He has so far met with community members and “relevant stakeholders” in St. Louis, Mo., and Garden City, Dodge City, Wichita, Manhattan, Olathe, Overland Park, Merriam, Lenexa and KCK in Kansas, according to a consulate spokesperson. “He will continue to do so in order to better serve and understand the needs of the Mexican community,” she said. Like his fellow consuls in the United States, Navarro-Bernachi is following the presidential election. “I and my colleagues are going to be very attentive to the new administration and will act accordingly in the guidelines of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he said.

he vision of a larger-than-life Kansas City businessman and philanthropist, dead since 1993, offers local families a ray of hope. During a private celebration last month in honor of Ewing Kauffman’s 100th birthday, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation announced a new scholarship and savings program. It will benefit residents in Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. The three-tiered KC Scholars program will award 250 college scholarships each year to low- and modest-income high school juniors; 200 adult learner scholarships to help those older than 24 return to college and earn a degree; and up to 1,000 college savings match funds to ninth grade students. The Kauffman Foundation committed $79 million – enough to sustain the KC Scholars program for a decade. This is just the latest Ewing Kauffmaninspired investment in education. In 1988, the pharmaceutical entrepreneur promised a college education to ninth graders at Westport High School through Project Choice. A total of 1,394 low-income students took part in the high school phase, which ended in 1996; 767 graduated from high school; 220 earned bachelor’s degrees; and 84 earned a vocational or associate’s degree. In 2003, Kauffman’s Foundation launched the Kauffman Scholars program. It offers a college education for poverty-stricken students who qualified in middle school. The program, which ends in 2022, has 1,013 “active” Kauffman Scholars. A college preparatory charter school also bears the Kauffman brand and dedication to standards of excellence. The Ewing Marion Kauffman School opened in 2011, and by 2018 it will have 1,100 students in grades five through 12. The school serves students residing within the Kansas City, Mo., school district. Kauffman’s Foundation supports Teach for America. Since 2008, it has placed 500-plus teachers in district and charter schools in Kansas City. Additionally, Kauffman’s Foundation supports individual public, private and charter schools that serve low-income students. Among those are Bishop Ward High School, Cristo Rey-KC and Holy Cross in Kansas City, Mo. Ewing Kauffman had a passion for education, and he cared deeply about the community and its youngsters. He established his foundation to “foster economic independence by advancing educational achievement and entrepreneurial success,” and he took it seriously. Many times over the years, he met with us in our Dos Mundos newspaper offices to explore ways to engage Hispanic students and keep them off drugs, out of trouble, academically focused, in school and college-bound. Long after his death, Ewing Kauffman continues to bless our community. He founded and invested in a foundation that demonstrates how inspiring hope and encouraging and enabling a child to succeed makes the whole community better and has a permanent and powerful reach.

ith the holidays approaching, many people are starting to make plans to travel. If you are currently a permanent resident, have a nonimmigrant status, or are in removal proceedings, there may be important steps for you to take before you travel. If you are a permanent resident, you are free to travel outside of the United States for up to six months. Make sure that your green card will not expire during that time, and that you have a valid passport from your home country. If you are outside of the United States for more than six months at one time, you risk abandoning your permanent resident status in the United States. If you have any criminal history, you may trigger a ground of inadmissibility and may be denied re-entry to the US. It is important to speak to an attorney before you travel. If you have TPS, asylum, a pending adjustment of status, or DACA, then you have to apply and be approved for permission to travel outside of the United States. The application you will need to file with USCIS is I-131 Application for Advanced Parole. It is very important that you have the advanced parole approved before you depart the United States. If you do not, then you most likely will not be allowed to re-enter the United States. The processing time for the application can take up to three months, so make sure you plan to file well in advance of your trip. If you are currently in removal proceedings, make sure to check with your ICE or ISAP officer before you travel outside of your state. Your officer may want to know about your travel plans, and make sure that you do not miss any appointments or court hearings. You are not permitted to travel outside the United States as you may be triggering your own deportation. There are other statuses that do not permit you to leave the United States, such as U nonimmigrant status. In other words, children who explore and create tend to make decisions easier and are more self-confident than children who haven’t been exposed to art. So if your children are interested in learning about art, encourage them. By holding a paintbrush or by drawing, they’ll develop their motor skills. They’ll also learn new words, shapes and actions. To incorporate art into your child’s life, try the following tips:

amos hablar sobre la fe que cosas buenas vendrán para nuestra comunidad. Muchas veces se siente cuando tomamos dos pasos hacia adelante se siente que también estamos tomando un paso atrás. Así es el caso para la lucha para la educación por nuestra juventud inmigrante. El gobierno federal no ha pasado nuevas leyes para arreglar nuestra situación y por esto inmigración se hizo un tema muy corriente a nivel de estado en los últimos años de los 2000s. En el 2008 el gobierno estatal de Missouri prohibió la asistencia de estudiantes inmigrantes en las universidades públicas. Ante de ese momento no había leyes sobre inscripción o matrícula. Muchos estudiantes no podían ir a la escuela y tuvieron que abandonar los estudios o buscar otras opciones. De 2008 at 2012 dirigí muchas reuniones con estudiantes y universidades sin mucho éxito. Y luego empezó el programa DACA. Ahí fue que pude explicar a los abogados de UMKC que los estudiantes de DACA eran capaces asistir las universidades públicas a pesar de la ley de 2008. Todas las universidades públicas empezaron a aceptar y matricular estudiantes DACA por lo que hice, por la información que había preparado. et’s talk about keeping the faith that good things will come for our community. Often, it seems like we take two steps forward and then a step back. Such is the case with the struggle for education for our immigrant youth. Because the federal government has not passed laws fixing our situation, immigration became a hot topic on the state level in the late 2000’s. In 2008, the Missouri state government barred undocumented students from attending public universities. Before that time, there were no state rules about enrollment or tuition. Many students suddenly could not attend school and had to drop out or find other options. I led a group of students in meeting with the university many times without success from 2008 to 2012. Then the DACA program started! At that time, I was able to explain to UMKC’s attorneys how DACA students were able to attend public university, despite the 2008 law. All public universities in Missouri began enrolling DACA students the next semester based on the legal information I had prepared! Unfortunately, soon after that, the state government passed laws increasing the tuition for DACA students. But we will not give up! Young people are our future – keep preparing for excellence and expect there to be more opportunities in the future. Look for opportunities to engage with others, such as a support group, church, structured play group or other interest group. *Plan ahead: When emergencies arise, having a backup plan can ease stress levels. Find out if there’s an emergency babysitting service in your area. Or develop a list of emergency contacts to help when you’re sick, need to go to the store at night, etc. *Set a routine: Routines are important in all families, as children thrive on predictability. With consistency, children will follow the routine with minimal reminders and negative behaviors will subside. *Pare down your to-do list: Determine which tasks need to be done today and which ones can wait until tomorrow. Giving yourself permission to momentarily let go of minute tasks also can ease stress. Finally, look for the positives in your children, enjoy the good times with them and remember to have fun as a family. Following those three tips can help parenting seem less scary and overwhelming – regardless of whether you’re parenting with a partner or a single parent.

o lo vi. Nadie me lo contó. Construyeron su suástica con madera y clavos poco antes de que se metiera el sol, en el jardín trasero de una casa en una pequeña población de Ohio. No puedo decir dónde; ese fue el acuerdo para poder presenciar la ceremonia. Al anochecer, una veintena de supremacistas blancos le prendieron fuego a la suástica mientras saludaban al estilo nazi con el brazo derecho y gritaban “¡White power, white power!” (“¡Poder blanco, poder blanco!”). But similar hate-fueled gatherings are happening across the U.S. with increasing ferocity.

The Southern Poverty Law Center estimates that the number of radical groups operating in the U.S. has grown from 784 in 2014 to 892 in 2015; and organizations affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan from 72 to 190. This year, hatred and hate crimes seem to be trending. Over the last six months, I’ve traveled around the country with a team of other journalists and filmmakers to create a documentary called “Hate Rising.” What we’ve found is deeply worrisome. In Texas an imperial wizard in the Ku Klux Klan told me without hesitation that he was superior to me because he is white and I am Hispanic. In Virginia a commentator from the so-called “alt-right” media warned me that, sooner or later, I’d have to leave the U.S., along with millions of other Hispanics, so that hate groups can build a mostly white country. White supremacists are angry — but they’re also terrified. In three decades, non-Hispanic whites, who account for some 60% of the popu-

The Republican presidential candidate says things that no other national politician would dare. The dynamic is what Karen Stenner, an expert on authoritarianism, calls the “activation” theory. When a group such as the white supremacists feels threatened, it seeks a leader who identifies a common enemy, expresses the group’s fears and offers a plan of action to combat the perceived enemy. That’s what Trump offers to racists when he pledges that if elected he will build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, deport millions of undocumented residents and prevent Muslims from entering the country. Meanwhile, white supremacists continue to act out their hate. I recently met a Somali immigrant who told me that an assailant smashed a beer glass against her face because she wasn’t speaking English. And I met a Mexican immigrant who was brutally beaten on a Boston street by two brothers who praised Trump. These aren’t isolated cases. The Council on American-Islamic Relations logged 63 attacks against mosques last year. And the Southern Poverty Law Center reports that 20 people were killed by white supremacists in the U.S. in 2015. Racist groups, like the ones I encountered during the filming of our documentary, often gather in secret and boost their membership through the internet — the use of social media is one of their leading means for recruiting. However, in this election cycle, many have come out from the dark and are making themselves heard in public. I’ve lived in the United States for 33 years, but I’ve never felt so much hatred. In Ohio that night, I watched as the flaming swastika slowly burned out. Surrounded by white extremists, I tried to speak as little as possible. After all, I have an accent. I knew that this wasn’t a safe place for an immigrant like myself — a place in a country whose own Declaration of Independence, signed more than 240 years ago, states that all men are created equal. His creativity might stem from a word or phrase within the lyrics of a song. His art also is the result of the inspiring people around him and the love they emit. Quiero reconocer durante la semana a quienes han tenido que ver en la historia de la Salvación y en este caso me refiero al EVANGELISA SAN LUCAS, quien escribió el tercer Evangelio y además la Carta de los Hechos de los Apóstoles. El día 18 de octubre se celebra su fiesta. Nació en Antioquia de Siria en los primeros años del Cristianismo. Era un pagano que fue convertido por San Pablo de quien luego se hizo discípulo. San Lucas es el que más habló de la Virgen María. San Lucas cuyo nombre significa “PORTADOR DE LUZ”, entró a la fe alrededor del año 40. Se educó en la literatura y en la medicina y es el único escritor del Nuevo Testamento que no es israelita y dirigió su mensaje a los cristianos gentiles. En su Evangelio, escrito en Roma entre los años 62 y 63, resalta la especial atención por los pobres, los pecadores arrepentidos, la oración y el sentido cristiano de la alegría: quien se sabe en posesión de Dios comienza a ser feliz desde ahora. Además nos presenta una figura de Jesús profundamente misericordiosa y una descripción inigualable sobre el Espíritu Santo, alma de la Iglesia. Murió en Beocia, a los 84 años. Es el patrón de los médicos y de los pintores. Ustedes saben que estamos profundizando un poco sobre la Exhortación Apostólica AMORIS LAETITIA “la alegría del amor” sobre el amor de la familia. “(As a boy), I would always go and see my uncle paint,” Sevilla recalled. “I had always liked to draw from a young age, but (seeing my uncle) inspired me a bit more to dedicate myself (to art).” Sevilla, who grew up in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, pursued his interest in art by attending the Universidad de Guadalajara, where he studied the two subjects that most interested him: drawing and graphic design. “I also liked painting, photography, sculpture and all aspects of art, really,” Sevilla said. Before starting his career in Kansas City, Mo., he studied communications in Guadalajara. Currently, Merlo and Perez have their own brand called Lola’s. Lola is a beautiful little skull and main character of the brand which drew its inspiration from the Day of the Dead. Luis hopes that his art encourages those who view it to engage with the world. He believes that people have become more indifferent about life and lost the sensitivity to other people’s feelings. “I know that the world is changing day by day with humanity’s indifference,” Merlo said. “As a small grain of sand, I only want to show others beauty, love, hope and the good things in life. n Oct. 1, approximately 100 Kansas City area high school students of Hispanic heritage showed up for a college fair hosted by the League of United Latin American Citizens and the U.S. Army at the University of MissouriKansas City. The students, many of whom were stepping onto a college campus for the first time, learned about the college experience, and heard personal stories from Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) students and soldiers. They also attended a scholarship awards presentation. Soldiers who attended included Lt. Col. Jane Sander, who has served for 24 years. Sander shared her story of growing up as the daughter of Chinese immigrants in San Francisco – and how her decision to join the Army opened up new possibilities for her. Those possibilities included pursuing a college education and various career opportunities in the Army. “The ROTC scholarship helped me pay for most of my tuition,” she said. “Once I graduated, I didn’t have to look for a job because I already had (an opportunity lined up) at the U.S. Army – and it’s been a great career for me.” Sander, who works in the Kansas City area, actively engages in outreach events, focusing on recruiting men and women from states in her region, including Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. Mexico’s new Saint /Nuevo santo de México

The young boy screamed with pain but would not give in. At times the soldiers stopped him and said, “If you shout, “Death to Christ the King’, we will spare your life”. But he answered: “Long live Christ the King! Long live Our Lady of Guadalupe!”. Once he arrived at the cemetery, José was asked once more if he would deny his faith. The 14 year old shouted out: “Long live Christ the King!”, and was summarily shot.

l 8 de octubre, las obras de arte de los estudiantes de la preparatoria Bishop Ward, fueron exhibidas en el Centro de Artes Alcott en Kansas City, Kansas. Dibujos, pinturas, grabados, cerámicas, esculturas, imágenes digitales, poesía, escritura creativa, presentaciones musicales y un altar de Día de Muertos estuvieron en exhibición, de acuerdo con el profesor de arte Nick Tomasic que ha dado clases durante 11 años en Bishop Ward. “Nuestros estudiantes estaban muy orgullosos - y con razón,” indicó Tomasic. Tomasic añadió que los dibujos de Abraham Ayalla estudiante de Bishop Ward, llamaron la atención de Chris Green, director ejecutivo de Alcott, que le ofreció a Ayalla una exposición individual para el 2017. “No hay suficientes cosas buenas para decir sobre Abraham y nuestros estudiantes,” expresó Tomasic.

n Oct. 8, the creative expressions of Bishop Ward High School students were on display at the Alcott Arts Center in Kansas City, Kan. Drawings, paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, digital imagery, poetry, creative writing, musical performances and a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar were on display, according to Nick Tomasic, a Bishop Ward art teacher for 11 years. “Our students were very proud – and rightfully so,” Tomasic said. Tomasic added that Bishop Ward junior Abraham Ayalla’s drawings caught the attention of Chris Green, Alcott’s executive director, who offered Ayalla a 2017 solo show. “I can’t say enough good things about Abraham and all our students,” Tomasic reflected.

Suarez takes third in Kansas Lottery 300 Other results Daniel Suarez feels that Kansas Speedway has been a good place for him to race during his brief NASCAR career – and on Oct. 15, the 24-year-old had another experience that was to his liking. That afternoon at the Kansas City, Kan., speedway, the Mexican-born driver took third in the Kansas Lottery 300. Suarez led for six laps of the 200-lap, 300-mile NASCAR Xfinity Series race – four of them with less than 20 laps left. He lost his final lead when Kyle Busch overtook him during a restart after the race had been under caution. “We just … (needed) to put ourselves in a … little better position to try to win the race,”Suarez said during his postrace press conference. “I … (think that) today we didn’t go. We just didn’t have the perfect luck to have the perfect car to try to win this thing.” Busch attributed his ability to overtake Suarez largely to runner-up Elliott Sadler “pushing us (from) behind.” And he felt that he could’ve overtaken Suarez after the final restart, even if Suarez had gotten what Busch called “a good jump.” “Our car just seemed to hang in (there) in the long run way better than everybody else, even though we were only 12 laps from the finish or so,” Busch said.

The Kansas Lottery 300 was sandwiched between two other races held over the weekend (Oct. 14-16) at the speedway. The slate of races started on Oct. 14 with an ARCA Racing Series race, won by Chase Briscoe. Following the Kansas Lottery 300, Kevin Harvick won the Hollywood Casino 400 – a 400-mile, 267-lap NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Drivers in the 40-car race included Latino driver Aric Almirola, who completed only 36 laps and placed 40th. It also included native Missourian Carl Edwards, who placed second. Thirty-nine healthy adults participated in the study over a four-month period. The participants were then engaged in making art for 45 minutes using modeling clay, collage materials or markers. The researchers compared the participants’ responses to their stress levels over time and found that 75 percent of the participants had lower cortisol levels after making art. The researchers also compared the benefit received from participants with artistic skills over those without them and found that both groups benefited equally. As stated in written responses by the participants, some of them reported feeling less stressed after a long day at work and feeling more relaxed when making art. Some found it to be fun and enjoyable. Further studies should be done on the relationship between making art and releasing stress, according to the researchers.
