eality TV personalities, professional athletes and popular entertainers draw a disproportionate share of daily news headlines nationwide. The excessive coverage distracts, albeit entertainingly, and it’s grossly misleading. We’re a nation of 319 million people. Reality TV personalities number fewer than 1,000. The nation’s 18,000 professional athletes account for only five hundredths of one percent of the entire American population, and our roughly 10,000 popular entertainers make up just three hundredths of one percent. Yet, it’s these 29,000 individuals that dominate print and broadcast headlines 24/7. The implication’s obvious, but it ignores reality. In truth, neither our economy nor our culture depends on them. Rather, it’s the nation’s millions of workers performing “a diverse array of jobs” that powers our economy and society. A 122-year-old national holiday is dedicated to workers. Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September since 1894 is next Monday, Sept. 5. The yearly traditional bookend to summer pays homage to the contributions, importance and power of America’s 149 million-strong workforce. The Way We Worked, a national traveling exhibit celebrates the last 150 years of American workforce history. “Office workers, factory workers, homemakers, truckers, soldiers and the millions more who keep the nation going through their work make great contributions not only to industry, but also to American culture,” reads an exhibit descriptor. The National Archives created the exhibition, and the Smithsonian Institution organized it for travel. The Way We Worked, focuses on the contributions of workers to the “strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.” It circulates with an exhibition docent handbook and description, English or Spanish language script, local exhibition program ideas, teacher’s guide and lessons for elementary, middle and high school students. The newest iteration of The Way We Worked toured Nebraska this summer. It was adapted from the original exhibition created in 2005, which was on display at the Kansas City (Mo.,) Public Library in summer 2007. The Way We Worked sketches the cataclysmic transitions in work and workplaces in America – from agricultural to industrial to informational. But above all, it’s devoted to “ordinary working Americans,” whether they toil in a farm field or grain elevator; on an oil rig, road crew, roof or lawn; or in a classroom, hospital, retail store, library, restaurant, firehouse, police station, commercial or government office, railyard or nursing home. In America, Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer and for families with schoolage children, the start of a new year. For most of America’s workers, the holiday means an extra day off work. Monday is labor’s day, designed to honor, appreciate and salute our labor force. They’ve earned it.

Experts from the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) shared the latest information about how the new waiver rules can help and hurt your family. First, the good news, the new rules allow certain permanent residents to count for getting a waiver. Remember, this is almost always the spouse that can help. Sometimes an elderly parent can help their adult son/daughter, but the waiver does not allow children to help their parents. The problem is that there is a waiting period for spouses of permanent residents and a very long waiting period for sons/daughters of permanent resident parents to be able to finish the immigration process. The upcoming election features two of the most unpopular candidates in modern American history. Wouldn’t it be advisable for the commission to include new faces? According to the latest Gallup survey, a majority of voters view both Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump unfavorably (by 63% and 55%, respectively). Are other candidates running? Of course, but they don’t have a high profile. “Seventy percent of Americans don’t know who we are,” Gary Johnson, the Libertarian

If not, McMullin hopes that his candidacy prevents Clinton or Trump from winning the necessary 270 electoral votes so that Congress will be forced to choose the new president (something that hasn’t happened in the U.S. since 1824). But while the debate commission has yet to invite outsiders like Johnson. McMullin and Stein to its party, it has also neglected to invite Hispanic journalists to be moderators. Hispanics are the fastest-growing electoral group in the United States — a bloc of about 27 million eligible voters. Their support is crucial in swing states like Colorado, Nevada and Florida, so I’m not exaggerating when I say that no candidate can take the White House without Hispanics’ support. Yet a Hispanic journalist has never moderated one of the presidential debates. Why? There are many highly competent Hispanic journalists who could do an extraordinary job: Maria Elena Salinas from Univision, for instance, or Jose DiazBalart from Telemundo, journalists Cecilia Vega and Tom Llamas from ABC, or Maria Hinojosa from NPR. I get the sense that both major candidates are afraid of just what they might be asked. These Hispanic journalists, and many more, are part of a community seldom discussed beyond the single focus on immigration. Their questions could prove quite unconventional. But it’s high time that a Latino journalist is invited to moderate. The nation is changing: By 2044, white residents will be a minority in the United States, according to census data. The presidential debates shouldn’t be managed like private clubs. They should reflect the nation’s growing diversity. This is our nation — as many ethnicities, accents and positions as possible should be represented. So my message to the commission is this: Open the debates! Rest assured that if the debate party is more inclusive, many Americans will find their faith in democracy renewed. If not, don’t be surprised to hear some loud screaming at the door. I’m commuting the sentences of an additional 214 men and women who are just as deserving of a second chance.” To date, Obama has commuted the sentences of 562 federal prisoners. Nearly 200 of those were serving life sentences. In all of the cases, the prisoners will have a shortened sentence or will be released on Dec. 1. Additionally, they’ll continue to receive rehabilitation and counseling to allow them to reintegrate with society. In a letter to the president, Sherman Chester, who has served 20 years of a life sentence, expressed his gratitude for receiving a second chance. “I know that I have a huge mountain to climb – and that it’s going to be a lot of hard work,” Chester wrote. “However, I intend to do and be my best, so that the decision you made believing in me will not be a poor one.” White House Counsel Neil Eggleston said this effort will help Congress create and pass a criminal justice reform bill. Additionally, it’ll help allocate tax dollars on initiatives to properly address drug issues, instead of spending it on prisons.

Because the car was in poor shape, he was saving money to help restore the classic automobile. Ethridge was told that his family’s trip from Fredonia, Kan., to the Kansas City, Mo., healthcare facility was for an event that would allow him to meet other transplant patients. After walking out of the front door at Children’s Mercy, he was presented with a renovated, functional Mustang, thanks to the help of his family and Scott Hoag, CEO of Mustang Racing Technology. Ethridge was in shock when he saw the vehicle. “I usually say what I think, but I am honestly speechless,” Ethridge said. He engaged in an emotional embrace with his mother, Jill Gillett. “You’ve got a new heart in the same body for (you to use to drive) your car,” Gillett said. The teen had been treated at Children’s

On Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14), he flat lined, with his mother at his bedside. “I can’t tell you what it feels like when every alarm in the room goes off and your child’s heart stops beating,” Gillett said. The next day, Ethridge’s parents were told he had two weeks to live. That same day, the family was told that a heart had been found for him. He received the transplant on Feb. 16. Since then, Ethridge has resumed his normal life. He’s back in high school and is even competing this fall in cross country.

USCIS Proposes New Immigration Rule for International Entrepreneurs

Under this proposed rule, the Department of Homeland Security(DHS) may parole, on a caseby-case basis, eligible entrepreneurs of startup enterprises: who have a significant ownership interest in the startup (at least 15 percent) and have an active and central role to its operations; whose startup was formed in the U.S within the past three years; and whose startup has substantial and demonstrated potential for rapid business growth and job creation, as evidenced by: receiving significant investment of capital (at least $345,000) from certain qualified U.S. investors with established records of successful investments; receiving significant awards or grants (at least $100,000) from certain federal, state or local government entities; or partially satisfying one or both of the above criteria in addition to other reliable and compelling evidence of the startup entity’s substantial potential for rapid growth and job creation. Entrepreneurs may be granted an initial stay of up to two years. A subsequent request for reparole (for up to three additional years) would be considered only if the entrepreneur and the startup entity continue to provide a significant public benefit as evidenced by substantial increases in capital investment, revenue or job creation. The notice of proposed rulemaking invites public comment for 45 days. After comments are reviewed and possible changes are made to the rule, it will take effect on the date indicated in the final rule that will be published in the Federal Register.

l periodista Ernesto Salayandia García cree que la única cosa que mantiene a una persona de espalda es la energía negativa. Ernesto cree que aferrarse a rencores, la frustración y la ira frena el espíritu humano de soltar el remordimiento y relajarse. En su artículo “De Adicto a ADICTO,” él afirma que si una persona está poniendo demasiada energía en pensamientos negativos, la mente y el cuerpo se conviertan tóxicos. A menudo, personas que tienen resentimiento o pesar sostener no sólo las emociones negativas, sino también las cosas materiales. García aconseja a estas personas a liberar la energía negativa; de lo contrario, que nunca se moverán hacia adelante para buscar nuevas oportunidades. Según Ernesto, la mejor manera de comenzar es mediante la limpieza de los espacios de almacenamiento, tales como armarios, cajones y armarios de la cocina. La clave es la de deshacerse de todo lo que ya no se necesita o utiliza. Colgándose de esas posesiones ata la vida de la persona, afirma él. García también afirma que la gente se aferra a esas posesiones porque sienten que “necesitan” algún día y quieren sentirse preparado para el futuro. In his article “De Adicto a ADICTO” (“From Addict to ADDICT”), Garcia states that if a person is putting too much energy into negative thoughts, the mind and body will become toxic. Often, people who hold onto resentment or regret hold onto not only negative emotions, but also material things. He advises such individuals to release the negative energy; otherwise, they’ll never move forward to pursue new opportunities. According to Ernessto, the best way to start is by cleaning out storage spaces, such as closets, drawers and kitchen cabinets. The key is to get rid of everything that’s no longer needed or used. Hanging onto those possessions ties down a person’s life, he claims. Garcia also claims that people hold onto such possessions because they feel that they might “need” them someday and want to feel prepared for the future. But according to him, with that mindset, people who hold onto those possessions send two messages to their brains and lives: They don’t trust tomorrow; and they believe that new, better opportunities aren’t for them, because they’re satisfied with saving old, unused items. But Garcia believes that people shouldn’t hold their lives back for the unknown future. Continuando con nuestro artículo sobre la Exhortación Apostólica AMORIS LAETITIA “la alegría del amor” sobre el amor de la familia, en el Antiguo Testamento, la palabra más usada después de YHWH (Yahve), es “hijo” (ben), que remite a “banah”= construir. Ellos son la “herencia de Dios” (Sal 127,1.3-5). Los hijos muestran la continuidad de la historia de la salvación de generación en generación (14). Desde esta perspectiva, la familia es la IGLESIA DOMÉSTICA y CENTRO DE CATEQUESIS PARA LOS HIJOS (16). Esto se ve claramente en el relato de la haggadah judía en la noche de la pascua: Éxodo 13,14; Salmo 146,12. Bíblicamente, los padres enseñan la fe y los hijos la acogen

y la cumplen (Éxodo 20,12), tanto que honrar se comprende cómo cumplir sin excusas (Siracida 3,3-4). Sin embargo la misma Escritura enseña que los hijos no son propiedad de la familia, sino que tienen su propio camino (Lucas 2,51; Lucas 9,59-62). La actitud de Jesús es interesante, ya que valora a los niños en medio de una sociedad que no les daba su lugar (Mateo 18,3-4). Por otra parte, la Escritura no desconoce que el sufrimiento está presente en las familias, tanto que Jesús habla de matrimonio en contexto de divorcio (Mateo 19,3-9): la violencia intrafamiliar representada en Caín y Abel, el desplazamiento y las injusticias (21), la muerte y la enfermedad de tantos seres queridos (Lucas 7,11-5). A todas estas situaciones responde Jesús con su predicación en parábolas (19). La Palabra de Dios acompaña a las familias en todo momento (Apocalipsis 21,4), no sólo en las dificultades, sino también en las situaciones diarias, por ejemplo en el trabajo, que es esencial para el desarrollo de la dignidad humana y familiar. El trabajo tiene una dimensión social y no sólo personal (Proverbios 31,10-31). El desempleo, a su vez, es sufrimiento, como es el caso de Rut. Ahora bien, no se puede justificar el trabajo a costa del sacrificio del ambiente (26); es decir, no se pueden admitir planes y políticas (nacionales o industriales) que justificándose en la oferta de empleo, acaben con la naturaleza. La ley cristiana es el AMOR y sus FRUTOS son la MISERICORDIA, el PERDÓN, y la TERNURA (28). Dios confía a los padres la educación y crianza de los hijos, no sólo con rigidez, sino también con PACIENCIA y PERSEVERANCIA, mostrando con las obras lo que se procura inculcar en los hijos (29). No olvidemos mes de SEPTIEMBRE mes de la Biblia, “Desconocer las Escrituras es desconocer a Cristo. Rio continuing tradition of hosting annual Latin American Film Festival Cine Río continuará la tradición del Festival de Cine Latinoamericano 1992, the Rio Theatre in Overland Since Park, Kan., has showcased the annual D Latin American Film Festival. By Melissa Arroyo

esde 1992, el Teatro Río en Overland Park, Kansas., ha mostrado el Festival de Cine Latinoamericano. Lo hará de nuevo este año. Comenzando a las 11 a.m. del Sábado (Sept. 3), el Río proyectará películas que hacen reflexionar sobre varios fines de semana a partir de varios países de América Latina. Después de las proyecciones, los espectadores tendrán la oportunidad de platicar acerca de cada película y la cultura presentada. La película del sábado es “Todos Se Van” dirigida por el colombiano Sergio Cabrera. Se invita al público a asistir y participar

en la plática de la película, moderado por Miguel Rivera-Taupier, profesor de la Missouri Western State University. “Todos Se Van” es la primera de las cinco películas que se proyectarán los sábados hasta el 8 de Oct. El festival, que ha generado muchas conversaciones culturales y trabajado para dar a conocer la riqueza de la cultura de América Latina, es el resultado de un esfuerzo de toda la vida por residente en la zona de Kansas City Gloria Bessenbacher. De acuerdo con Bessenbacher, la nostalgia la inspiró a llevar el evento anual al público. “Algún tiempo después de llegar ... (en) Kansas City, empecé a extrañar (las películas europeas),” dijo Bessenbacher. “Busqué algunos teatros que quisieran proyectarlos. La respuesta fue que no había interés en el mercado en estas películas. ... Así nació la idea de organizar una serie de películas de países de habla hispana “. Desde su creación en septiembre de 1992, el festival ha ganado popularidad cada año. Se ha hecho popular no sólo en el área de Kansas City, pero también ha atraído el interés de las zonas urbanas cercanas, como St. Joseph y Topeka. “Es importante que el público disfrute de estas producciones de cine de América Latina, que de otro modo no podrían ver”, dijo Bessenbacher. “Además, las pláticas con el público después de cada película, moderado por los profesores de humanidades de las universidades y colegios de la zona, hacen de este programa aún más culturalmente atractivo.” Sin embargo, este es el último año de la organización del evento de Bessenbacher. The answer was that there was no market interest in these films.… Thus, the idea of organizing a series of films from Spanish-speaking countries was born.” Since its inception in September 1992, the festival has gained in popularity each year. It has become popular not only in the Kansas City area, but also has drawn interest from nearby urban areas, including St. Joseph and Topeka. “It is important for the public to enjoy these Latin American film productions, which otherwise they would not see,” Bessenbacher said. “In addition, discussions with the audience after each film, moderated by humanities professors of universities and colleges in the area, make this program even more culturally appealing.” However, this is Bessenbacher’s last year of organizing the event. In Mexico, I hadn’t really seen someone express that much emotion while singing. Why did you continue to follow his work? He not only was a singer, but he was a composer. And he was the best songwriter of this era. Every famous Mexican singer or band has played at least one song from him. How will JG’s death affect the music industry? There will never be any more songs like his. *Guvi: When was the first time you heard about JG? I knew of JG and his music by my parents and became a fan myself. What about JG captured your attention? As a child, his animated personality would capture my attention. Seeing him dance on TV was always entertaining. He was upbeat and energetic in his performances and music. Why did you continue to follow his work? JG did a lot to help his community and always acknowledged his fans. He always had a smile and poured his heart into each concert and song. How will JG’s death affect the music industry? He was one-of-a-kind, and he brought so much to music and to songs that many people can relate to. Most importantly, his songs never will be something of the past. JG created such unique music, and that will be hard to recreate. *Evelia: When was the first time you heard about JG? I first heard Juan Gabriel when I was 12 years old back in 1976. Music back then all sounded the same and he was someone who stood out and everyone who lived on my street would listen to his music *Evelia everyday. What about JG captured your attention? What truly caught my attention were his songs. They were beautiful, and his voice too! Why did you continue to follow his work? I admired how he worked the crowd at his concerts, and really how humble he was. How will JG’s death affect the music industry? I think that there isn’t a person like him, with his voice, his songs and his energy. He had so many songs and those will continue to be listened to by people of all ages. *Jeanette: When was the first time you heard about JG? When I was little. He was one of my parents’ favorite, so we grew up listening to his music. What about JG captured your attention? Besides his music, his energy! Why did you continue to follow his work?
