and pride Chilean Independence Day (Sept. 18) brings to all Chileans. “When I was young, I celebrated Chilean Independence Day with my family,” Triggs said. “We celebrated with meat dishes, along with a glass of Chilean wine.” After the traditional meal, Triggs and his family would dance the night away with their “cueca” moves to celebrate their homeland’s national dance. “We would also go to ramadas, which are street parties or public get-togethers, where many people would go and sell typical food in my country,” Triggs recalled. Some of the oldest traditions in observing the holiday include painting one’s house and keeping it well-decorated for at least one week. Another tradition is to hang the Chilean flag outside of one’s house for a week.

Party apparatchiks tout the manifesto as “the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party.” It calls for replacing “our broken immigration system” with comprehensive immigration policy that is humane and consistent with American values. It supports a path to citizenship for law-abiding families, state efforts to make DREAMers eligible for driver’s licenses and in-state college tuition, and eliminating certain discriminatory quota systems and bureaucratic backlogs in processing applications. The platform also supports President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) and ending the “forced and prolonged expulsion from the country” of undocumented members of “mixed-status families.” Clinton’s remarks and campaign website give robust voice to the platform proposals. “Hillary will introduce comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to full and equal citizenship within her first 100 days in office,” her website states. It’s a “key plank of her presidential campaign,” National Public Radio reported last month. She’s “vowed to restore and expand Obama’s programs, close private sector detention centers and take a very hard look at deportation policies now in force,” according to NPR. But there’s a caveat. It should serve as a warning to both hardline enforcement and comprehensive immigration reform advocates alike and is contained in a quote by George Santayana. The celebrated Spanish-born poet and philosopher sagaciously cautioned, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Our political parties have debated immigration throughout history. And comprehensive immigration reform has headlined the six previous Democratic Party platforms. Dating back to at least 1992, the party has advocated humane immigration policy that’s consistent with American values. In his 1992 campaign against President George H.W. Bush, Democratic candidate Bill Clinton – the 42nd U.S. president and husband of Hillary Clinton – railed against his opponent’s “cruel” immigration policies and vowed to overturn them. Once in office, however, Clinton reversed course. His about-face was derided by immigrants’ rights advocates, who accused Clinton of acting against anti-immigrant extremists only when it’s politically expedient. Moreover, his policies gutted anti-discrimination rules protecting immigrants, raised new barriers to asylum-seeking refugees and prevented the courts from blocking potentially illegal policies, advocates charged, The New York Times reported on Oct. 26, 1996. Fast-forward to 2008. In answer to a question from Univision’s Jorge Ramos on May 28, then-Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama guaranteed “that we will have in the first year (of his presidency) an immigration bill … I want to move that forward as quickly as possible.”

Colombians face decision over peace agreement

uy pronto se les pedirá a los colombianos que voten sobre el acuerdo de paz alcanzado por el gobierno de Colombia y las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia para poner fin a la larga guerra en el país sudamericano. El gobierno de Colombia y el grupo rebelde concluyeron oficialmente las negociaciones el 24 de agosto; casi cuatro años de conversaciones de paz en La Habana, Cuba, que dieron como resultado un documento de 297 páginas que contiene los acuerdos finales entre el grupo guerrillero y el gobierno sobre cuestiones tales como la participación política y los cultivos ilícitos. Se espera que Colombia tenga una votación nacional el 2 de octubre para aprobar el acuerdo; la decisión del país es para poner fin a un conflicto que se prolongó durante más de medio siglo y llevó

The Colombian government and the rebel group officially concluded their negotiations on Aug. 24. Almost four years of peace talks in Havana, Cuba, resulted in a 297-page document that contains the final agreements between the guerilla group and the government on such issues as political involvement and illicit crops. Colombia is expected to take a national vote on Oct. 2 to approve the agreement. The country’s decision to end a conflict that lasted for more than a half-century and took more than

220,000 lives will hinge on whether Colombians vote yes or no on supporting the final agreement to the end the conflict and build a lasting state of peace. According to Colombian citizen Jennifer Quintero, the country is divided since the government and the FARC reached the agreement. “The country is divided between the yes and the no,” said Quintero. “I really don’t agree with a lot of things - like the fact that the guerrilla is not going to go to jail or that they will be part of the government. But at the same time we can’t continue to kill each other.” Quintero said she does not know what her position will be on Oct. 2 but she said the vote has generated “conflict instead of peace.” According to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Colombia is close to achieving lasting peace. However, many political analysts believe that, as the rebels integrate into society, they’ll become organized criminal gangs and continue fighting, as well as trade cocaine.

Venezuelans from all over the country marched in protest of the economic crisis and to demand a recall referendum of Maduro’s presidency. As expected, the government didn’t allow the protestors to practice their freedom of speech. A police line blocked the entrance to Caracas, the nation’s capital. As the protestors attempted to reach the capital, police officers repeatedly stated: “You’re not allowed to enter the city. I’m sorry. I have orders.” But the protestors didn’t give up. Abandoning their personal vehicles and getting off of buses, thousands of them walked through the police line to reach the capital. People outside of Venezuela must be made aware of the situation in the South American country. Although a solution to this chaos seems impossible, anything can happen when nations unite. The situation in Venezuela is no longer an issue of one country or one region of the world. The situation in Venezuela has become a problem for humanity. That means all humans should react. Venezuelans aren’t giving up on their country. The rest of humanity shouldn’t give up on them.

En que estaba pensando el presidente de México, Enrique Peña Nieto, cuando invitó a Donald Trump a Los Pinos? Estaba pensando, por supuesto, en que le podía ganar. Pero calculó muy mal. Este será uno de los puntos más bajos de su presidencia. Y eso es mucho decir después de Ayotzinapa, Nochxitlán, la “Casa Blanca,” el apartamento en Florida y más de 57 mil muertos. Trump se fue de México sin dar una disculpa y sin cambiar, en lo más mínimo, su plan migratorio. Fue una reunión entre dos de las personas más odiadas por los mexicanos, tanto en México como Estados Unidos. Peña Nieto tiene la mayor desaprobación — 66% — de un presidente mexicano desde 1995, cuando Reforma empezó a medirlo. En cuanto a Trump, el 73% de los latinos en Estados Unidos lo considera un racista, según una encuesta de Univision. Tal para cual. ¿Por qué se juntan los impopulares? Porque en el fondo, quieren que la gente los quiera, y están dispuestos a tomar altos riesgos. hat was Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto thinking when he invited Donald Trump to Mexico City? He was thinking that he could outsmart Trump, of course. But as everyone saw, Peña Nieto had underestimated his opponent. Last week’s episode will be remembered as one

of the lowest points in Peña Nieto’s presidency — and that’s saying a lot, given the scandals that have enveloped his administration in recent years. Among them: the still-unresolved case of the missing college students in Ayotzinapa, the violent teachers’ strike in Nochixtlán, the “Mexican White House” scandal, and the recent allegations involving the first lady’s condo in Florida and the potential government contractor who paid property taxes for the condo. Above all, since Peña Nieto took office in 2012, more than 57,000 Mexicans have lost their lives due to violence. Trump arrived in Mexico on Aug. 31, met with Peña Nieto and left several hours later, without offering any apologies for his anti-Mexico, antiimmigrant rhetoric or changing his wrongheaded proposals one iota. It was truly embarrassing to watch Peña Nieto stand silent after their meeting as Trump took control of the press conference and of the narrative, only calling on reporters who asked questions in English. At one point, Trump said that he and Peña Nieto had discussed Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the U.S. southern border — but not about who would foot the bill.

Peña Nieto, knowing this was not true, kept silent, further shrinking toward irrelevance. After Trump was gone, Peña Nieto posted on Twitter that he had made it clear to Trump that Mexico was not going to pay for the wall, as Trump has insisted for over a year. But if that’s truly the case, why didn’t he contradict Trump at the press conference? This was not diplomacy on Peña Nieto’s part. This was a lack of character and leadership. While the president insisted that his primary intent was “to defend the Mexican people” during his visit with Trump, it’s clear that didn’t happen. Millions of Mexicans are now wondering why Peña Nieto invited Trump to Mexico in the first place. It may have had something to do with the fact that these two men are widely disliked. According to the Mexico City-based newspaper Reforma, Peña Nieto has the highest disapproval rating (74%) of any Mexican president since 1995, when the newspaper first started to keep records. And 73% of Latinos in the United States say they think that Trump is racist, according to a recent Univision poll. So these men are two unpopular peas in a pod. But what did they think would be gained from a public meeting? I think that both men want and seek approval, and they’re willing to take great risks to gain respect. Peña Nieto is still reeling from accusations of corruption and incompetence — not to mention recent allegations that he plagiarized part of his law school thesis — so he felt he needed to do something bold to shore up support at home. He may have hoped that positioning himself as a defender of fellow Mexicans against an ogre like Trump would boost his approval ratings. On the other side, Trump is trying to steer a controversial campaign while trailing Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate, in almost every poll. In the end, it was Trump who benefited most from the Mexico meeting. Hours after the press conference, at a speech in Phoenix, he doubled down on his pledge to build a wall along the 1,900-mile border. He insisted again that Mexico will pay for it, even if the Mexicans don’t know that yet. It was the first time that, as a presidential candidate, Trump met with a head of state, and he demonstrated that such high-level meetings can be arranged within a few hours. He also used the opportunity to display his notorious stubbornness on the world stage, for everyone to see. Peña Nieto lost on his own turf. As Reforma aptly described their encounter: Trump used Peña Nieto, then left unscathed. But while Trump has been talking nonstop about his border wall with Mexico, the one that voters should be concerned about is the wall he wants to build to isolate the United States from the rest of the world and preserve America’s European heritage. Hence his obsession with trying to make the border impregnable, his attacks on Latin American immigrants, his rejection of free trade agreements and his scorn for global organizations. This is a risky bet. Trump thinks he can win the presidency with only the white vote — but I believe he’s wrong. Without support from African-Americans, Latinos and Asians, it’s just not possible. In two months, we’ll see whether his gamble pays off. Meanwhile, Peña Nieto’s influence and approval ratings continue to shrink. He wasted a unique opportunity to recharge his failing administration, when he could have voiced his outrage to Trump and had millions of Mexicans behind him — when he could have finally acted like the leader Mexico needs. He chose not to.

I believe that he did this to, supposedly him, make amends with the Mexicans and to gain more Latino voters. But I don’t believe he was able to do so with everything he said after his visit to Mexico.

The visit makes it seem like he is working to progress his outlandish proposed policies to deal with Mexican immigration, but the fact that his tweet interpreting the outcome of the meeting directly contradicted what President Nieto had to say, shows that his trip was him trying to convey himself as more of a diplomatic strong arm than he really is. Do you think Trump has a significant chance of becoming the US President? I don’t believe that Trump has a real chance of winning the election. Although the polls were initially close, the democratic party is no longer fractured like it was when it contained two strong candidates. Do you think Trump’s visit to Mexico was significant in acquiring more Latino voters to his campaign? Why? His trip could maybe persuade a few Latino votes, but I wouldn’t think that one visit, in which he lied about its productivity, insulted his host, and again announced his plan to build a wall will make the Latino population forget the hateful rhetoric he had at the beginning of his campaign.

Además, es el Papa quien actúa en persona. La petición no la formula un obispo individualmente -es decir, el obispo de la diócesis en la que se ha hecho el proceso canónico, que suele ser la del lugar en el que ha muerto el santo- sino “la Santa Madre Iglesia”, y, en su nombre, el prefecto de la Congregación de las Causas de los Santos. Para llegar a este punto de COMPROMISO SERIO, se necesita una sana critica a los modelos tradicionales que reforzaban la autoridad antes que el dialogo. Así mismo se tiene que dar un nuevo sentido al matrimonio, sin apocar los bienes del matrimonio, ni reduciéndolo sólo a la procreación (37). Dentro de una nueva comprensión del matrimonio que no es solo para tener hijos, ocupa un lugar especial la CONCIENCIA y el libre desarrollo de la propia identidad. Si se forma la conciencia en los niños, cuando sean adultos actuarán en libertad y sabrán decidir ante las situaciones complicadas. Ahora bien, la configuración con el ideal del Evangelio no es inmediata, sino que se realiza gradualmente, según etapas de crecimiento y maduración (38). Si se FORMA UNA CONCIENCIA madura, se supera la cultura de lo circunstancial y de lo pasajero (por si funciona) que agobia a esta época (39). One of their issues of concern is that the policy won’t affect private prisons contracted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which reportedly detains more than 400,000 undocumented immigrants every year – mostly women and children who’ve fled the violence of their home countries. Te ayudará para evitar la repetición de palabras y elevar el lenguaje. Sin embargo, como explicaba Clive Staples Lewis, “cualquier necio puede escribir en lenguaje erudito.
