l evento de Chicano Voices de este año incluyen a personas que han impactado a la comunidad hispana localmente - y en algunos casos, nivel nacional. El segundo evento anual se inaugurará el viernes (5 de mayo) y se llevará a cabo el 24 de junio en el Centro Mattie Rhodes en Kansas City, Mo. his year’s Chicano Voices event will T feature individuals who’ve impacted the Hispanic community locally – and in some

cases, nationally. The second annual event will open on Friday (May 5) and run through June 24 at the Mattie Rhodes Center in Kansas City, Mo. It’ll honor local figures who’ve made impacts in economic development, cultural arts, healthcare and advocacy. “Last year, the event was about bringing attention to the history of the Chicano movement and falling in that same theme of remembering a rich history and educating individuals about significant milestones within our Hispanic history,” said Mattie Rhodes John Fierro, president and CEO. “We thought it would be fitting to identify some local heroes.” Individuals being honored include Primitivo Garcia, Ruben Garcia, Hector Barreto Sr., Mary Lona, Nellie Lozano and Anna Riojas. Garcia was a young man who intervened in a potential robbery, was injured by gunshot wound and died a week or so later. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his passing. Fierro hopes

this year’s event will help the community understand Garcia’s heroism “It’s interesting because his sister – who interacts regularly with students at the school that bears his name on the Westside – on one occasion shared this story about her brother,” Fierro said. “And … some of the kids responded, ‘Well I hope he’s O.K.!’ – not knowing that he is no longer with us. since I started boxing – and that’s always been on my mind,” Contreras stated. Admittedly, however, Contreras’ pursuit of his dream hasn’t been easy. For instance, no one in his family or none of his close friends had previous boxing experience. And although Contreras’ family has supported his boxing dreams, Contreras had to work to earn the support of one family member: his mother, Adriana Ordaz. “Some friends had invited us to watch a boxing match at Turner (Recreation Commission in Kansas City, Kan.) and we took Johnathan – and out of nowhere, he said to us, ‘I want to box too,’ ” Ordaz recalled. “As a mother, I wasn’t too excited about the idea. And I saw my son, who was a shy little boy, and asked myself, ‘What is he going to do boxing?’ ” Ultimately, Contreras’ father convinced Ordaz to let the boy try boxing and see if he liked it. They took him to Turner, where he started training. “My son had never really exercised,” Ordaz said. “He did not have any coordination to do the exercises – and it was just really strange to us because he had so much desire to do boxing, despite his flaws.” According to Ordaz, Contreras never wanted to miss a practice and was punctual to each one. Contreras received negative feedback at the beginning – most of it in the form of being told he should quit boxing. But he worked through that negativity. After much dedication – not only from Contreras, but also from his parents – he began to advance in the sport. According to Ordaz, Contreras has participated in significant boxing matches locally and nationally in the Junior Olympics, earning a bronze medal in his division.

She established – in my understanding – the first Hispanic business directory called La Lista Latina.” Lozano, the final individual being honored, was dedicated to preserving the Mexican culture through dance. “The purpose is to remember our history and to educate people about the significant contributions made by key individuals – and those six are all local individuals,” Fierro stated. El debate sobre si la comercialización se ha apropiado de los días festivos y los días santos es eterno. Mañana es el día festivo del Cinco de Mayo. Aquí en Estados Unidos, los desfiles, fiestas públicas y privadas, festivales y fiestas conmemoran el Cinco de Mayo, el día de 1862 en que el ejército mexicano derrotó a los franceses en la batalla de Puebla. Todos los que asisten a la celebración del Cinco de Mayo en una de las incontables ciudades por el país aprenden un poco sobre la cultura e historia mexicana y prueban las bebidas y cocina mexicanas. Distinguidos desfiles y sus participantes con vestuarios coloridos celebran la herencia mexicana. Hay exhibiciones de arte y lucha libre, conciertos de mariachi y presentaciones de bailes folklóricos para toda la familia. Bailes folclóricos, juegos con piñatas y artesanías avivan las celebraciones, y muestras de comidas mexicanas tientan el paladar. El Cinco de Mayo de mañana, dedicado este año para nuestra juventud. Tomar parte en las festividades aumenta la conciencia ética y una apreciación por la herencia mexicana y la identidad, involucra a nuestros jóvenes en la diversidad cultural y conciencia y forma un sentido de comunidad en el lugar de nuestros niños en ella. Mientras que las familias disfrutan, estamos conectando a nuestros jóvenes con sus raíces, honrando al mismo tiempo el pasado y el futuro.

Have holidays and holy days devolved from meaningful occasions to merely excuses for alcohol-soaked bacchanals, obscene gluttony and wanton extravagance? The debate over whether commercialization has appropriated holidays and holy days is perennial. Tomorrow is the Cinco de Mayo holiday. Here in the United States, parades, public and private parties, festivals and fiestas commemorate May 5, the day in 1862 that the Mexican army defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla. Everyone who attends a Cinco de Mayo observance in any of countless cities across the nation learns a little about Mexican culture and history and samples Mexican drinks and cuisine. Distinctive parade floats and colorfully costumed marchers celebrate Mexican heritage. There are exhibitions of art and Lucha Libra wrestling, mariachi band concerts and family-friendly ballet folklorico performances. Folk dancing, piñata games and craft-making enliven observances, and samples of Mexican fare tempt the palate. Commercial purveyors of Mexican comestibles and merchandise do capitalize on Cinco de Mayo to turn a profit. The annual holiday also offers Hispanic-serving nonprofit organizations an opportunity to promote their work and raise funds for their various programs and services. But the efforts of both retailers and nonprofits indisputably shine the spotlight on Mexican culture and history and the contributions of Mexican-Americans to our national culture. This year, several communities across the nation chose to honor children in their Cinco de Mayo festivities. The theme of their various fêtes: “Children Are the Future – Let’s Celebrate Them!” “Our objective is strengthening families and building community,” an official in Lubbock, Texas explained. “That’s why children are the 2017 honorees. We adults realize that the real future lies in the hands of our children and grandchildren. Our first priority should be nurturing, advocating and educating America’s youth.” Doubtless, the debate over commercialization of our holidays and holy days will persist, and that’s beneficial. It’s a consciousness-raising and useful conversation to have. But let’s don’t let the debate usurp our celebrations and observances. Tomorrow’s Cinco de Mayo, dedicated this year to our youth. Taking part in the festivities fosters ethic consciousness and an appreciation for Mexican heritage and identity, involves our youngsters in cultural diversity and awareness and builds a sense of community and our kids’ place in it. While families enjoy ourselves, we’re connecting our young people to their roots, honoring, at the same time, both past and future.

l Departamento de Inmigración de Aduanas de Estados Unidos (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció recientemente la creación de una nueva línea telefónica para dar servicio a las personas que han sido afectadas por crímenes cometidos por inmigrantes indocumentados. En su sitio de Internet, ICE anunció el número 1-(855)-48-VOICE (488-6423). De acuerdo con la agencia gubernamental, la línea telefónica se enfocará en responder preguntas de víctimas, proporcionar asistencia anotándose para recibir el estatus automatizado de custodia sobre una persona indocumentada en custodia y ayudar a las víctimas. he U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently announced the creation of a new hotline to serve people who’ve been impacted by crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. On its website, ICE released the number, 1-(855)-48-VOICE (488-6423). According to the government agency, the hotline will focus on answering questions from victims, providing assistance signing up to receive automated custody status about an undocumented person in custody and helping victims. It also will serve as a reference line for skilled social science professionals who want to refer victims to services. The new hotline has been severely criticized by people in the United States for the terminology used across its website – particularly, the term “illegal aliens.” In addition, according to a report from CNN, some people have called the hotline, trolling ICE with jokes about space aliens. Others have trolled the hotline through social media. “Superman is an illegal alien,” Twitter user AnimisticEnginge tweeted. “Wonder Woman is an immigrant. The X-Men are a persecuted minority. We know whose ICE side is on.” ICE has expressed its displeasure to the hoax calls and trolling on social media. “There are certainly more constructive ways to make one’s opinions heard than to prevent legitimate victims of crime from receiving the information and resources they seek because the lines are tied up by hoax callers,” an anonymous spokesperson was quoted by BuzzFeed News as saying.

the once successful shopping center. In a statement published by Lane4, a new business center will be reconstructed for a Lowe’s retail store, with other smaller stores and restaurants replacing the building this fall. Construction crews have started work by demolishing the inside of the building. They’ll demolish the outside later in May. LANE4 worked with both the Overland Park Historical Society and the Johnson County Museum to preserve items of historical significance from within the mall. “We know Metcalf South was, and still is, a very important piece of Overland Park’s history,” said Owen Buckley, LANE4 president. “It was important to us to help preserve what we could for the community.” The mall first opened in 1967 and was the first enclosed mall in the Kansas City area then. For several decades, Metcalf South received plenty of shoppers and occupied shops until the 1990s, when area shopping patterns deteriorated the business. By the mid-2000s, Metcalf South had become almost empty – and nearly all businesses had shut down or relocated, except for Sears and Macy’s. Officially, the mall closed to the public in May 2014, except for Sears – a privately owned and operated location. The original owner sold the property to LANE4, whose executives proposed several ideas for renovation that did not resonate with the governing body. Company executives are currently working with additional retailers for renovation plans.

The United Nations, for example, has designated Nov. 20 as Universal Children’s Day, as it does each year. According to Jackson, most of the data shows that if one uses oseltamivir early in the treatment of influenza, it’ll shorten the duration of a fever and other symptoms. “The timeline for that is relatively short, meaning you might get a day or so less of fever and other symptoms,” Jackson stated. Individuals are advised to use oseltamivir to treat influenza, not colds. Cold symptoms might include a mild fever, runny nose and coughing. It can take from three days to one week for symptoms to subside and for the individual to get better. By contrast, influenza is associated with an abrupt onset, according to Jackson. Its onset includes a high fever, headaches, severe myalgia and a cough that could lead to more prominent respiratory complications. Influenza can affect the individual from seven to 10 days – sometimes longer. And 20-40 percent of those affected might develop complications. “There’s some additional data that shows not only can it (oseltamivir) reduce the risk of complications from influenza, but it (also) can reduce the chance of death by about half in hospitalized individuals,” Jackson said. “And that’s what’s probably most important.” Oseltamivir is best used to treat individuals who are hospitalized or have severe complications, according to Jackson. “How would you explain the difference between ‘Well it’s only going to make you feel better for a day or so, if you take it (oseltamivir) as an outpatient’ versus ‘It will reduce your risk of death by half,’ if you are hospitalized?” Jackson asked rhetorically. “That’s going to explain a little bit about the recommendations for who should get this.” The recommendation, Jackson stated, is that the medicine be reserved for certain individuals. As with any other medicine, patients who take oseltamivir are advised to have their doctor tell them what the medicine’s benefits will be, what they should expect when taking it and when to call a doctor. And they should remember that oseltamivir (a.k.a., Tamiflu) isn’t for everyone with the flu, according to Jackson. “In looking at children, we have thousands of children who come through our emergency room here at Children’s Mercy every winter,” she said. “Picking out those children who have influenza – as opposed to common cold viruses and then those children who are at high risk for complications – those are the ones (for) whom therapy would be recommended.” Jackson also stated that primary prevention through immunization is important in fighting the flu. Vaccines will reduce the risk of getting the flu by half in most cases. Desde que Donald W Trump llegó a la Casa Blanca, ha arrestado a E por lo menos 5,441 inmigrantes indocumentados sin historial criminal, más del doble de los que deportó Barack Obama en el mismo periodo el año anterior, según reportó The Washington Post. Aclaración: Estas son personas cuyo único delito fue entrar a Estados Unidos ilegalmente. Nada más. Entraron para hacer los trabajos que nadie más quiere hacer. Todos los estadounidenses somos cómplices de los indocumentados. Vinieron a Estados Unidos por nosotros, nos beneficiamos de su trabajo y miles de empresas los contratan. No vinieron de paseo a Disneylandia. No han matado ni herido a nadie; no han robado, violado, traído drogas; y no los han detenido manejando en estado de ebriedad. El miedo no anda en burro. Esa es una frase mexicana que se aplica perfectamente a las nuevas políticas migratorias del joven gobierno de Trump. Trump y su secretario de seguridad interna, John Kelly, dicen que se quieren concentrar en arrestar y deportar a los “badhombres”, es decir, criminales y pandilleros como los de la Mara Salvatrucha. Pero la verdad es otra: Están agarrando al que se les cruce. Las cifras no mienten. Trump arrestó a 21,362 indocumentados del 20 de enero al 13 de marzo de este año. En ese mismo periodo en el 2016, Obama sólo había deportado a 16,104 personas. Este es un aumento del 32%. Además, Trump intentó prohibir la entrada a personas de seis países mayoritariamente musulmanes y castigar a las ciudades santuario que protegen a los indocumentados. Los jueces han bloqueado esas medidas pero el espíritu antiinmigrante de Trump está muy presente. Por eso hay tanto miedo. Los primeros 100 días de Trump en la presidencia han sido marcados por el terror que ha generado entre los 11 millones de indocumentados que viven en Estados Unidos, en su mayoría de origen latinoamericano. Cada día hay nuevas razones para el temor: Un “Dreamer” de 23 años de edad que llegó a Estados Unidos cuando tenía 9 fue deportado recientemente a México, un país que ni siquiera recuerda. Un padre en California fue arrestado mientras llevaba a su hija a la escuela. Una madre de dos hijos fue detenida en Arizona durante una cita con funcionarios de la oficina del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas. Ya nadie se siente seguro. Y ese es el gran cambio. Pero hay que ser honestos. Barack Obama deportó a más de 2 millones y medio de indocumentados, más que cualquier otro presidente. To be fair, during his tenure Obama deported 2.5 million people, more undocumented residents than any other president, and among those who were removed were hundreds of thousands of people who had never committed any crime. The difference between Trump and Obama, however, is that Obama supported immigration reform and granted legal protections to more than 750,000 Dreamers — young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children by their parents. This was a significant step. Trump opposes establishing a path to legalization. While he has said that the Dreamers have nothing to worry about, nobody knows what he’s going to do next. After all, Trump has a serious credibility problem. He has lied so many times that his words hold little weight, and his intentions remain unclear. What is known is that Trump has promoted distrust and hatred, with undocumented residents as his target. This first came to the public’s attention when he launched his presidential bid in June 2015 by calling Mexican immigrants criminals, drug dealers and rapists — an offensive lie, appealing to mistrust of outsiders. Fewer than 300,000 undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. have committed a felony, according to a recent study from the Migration Policy Institute. This amounts to less than 3% of the undocumented population. By comparison, about 6% of U.S.-born residents have committed felonies. If Trump really wanted to focus on arresting and deporting dangerous criminals, nobody would oppose him. But it’s crucial to understand that this is a small group of people who aren’t representative of the millions of foreigners living in the United States. Nevertheless, Trump’s speeches and political stances have emboldened others to express their prejudices more openly, and that has made all immigrants vulnerable. I’ve lived here for more than 30 years, and I’ve never experienced an antiimmigrant climate like this one: strong, pervasive and blatant. Other people may judge Trump’s performance during his first 100 days in office according to different factors, but for me and many immigrants, these have been 100 days of fear. We should brace ourselves: There are more than 1,300 ahead.

l sábado 29 de abril se celebró la 5ta cena y baile anual de la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Unidad. El objetivo de este evento es recaudar fondos a beneficio de la parroquia . La cena se llevó a cabo en el Centro de la comunidad de Parque Pierson, Situado en 1800 dela calle 55th, en Kansas City Ks. El padre Oscar Garavito y el padre Fr. Kent O’Conner fueron encargados del evento con un grupo de voluntarios como: Erik González, Martin y Victoria Jiménez, Agustín y Cuca Ramírez, Lupita y LorenaVillalobos, GenaroSanchez, María Carmona, Sara Lira, Mary Alvarez,Virginia Oropeza, Antonio Arévalo y muchos más. Se efectuaron varias rifas los ganadores de premio de $200 fue Ileana Sánchez el de $300 lo recibió Ricardo Villalobos y $500 fueron para Antonio Arévalo . La música estuvo a cargo del Conjunto de Topeka Picante, todos los asistentes gozaron de la cena y baile.

The dinner took place in the Pierson Park Community Center, located at 1800 55th St., Kansas City KS. Father Oscar Garavito and Fr. Kent O´Conner lead the event along with a group of volunteers who helped with the event. Those volunteers included Erik González, Martin and Victoria Jiménez, Agustín and Cuca Ramírez, Lupita and Lorena Villalobos,GenaroSanchez, Gill Urenda, Sara Lira, Mary Alvarez, Antonio Aravelo,Virginia Oropeza , María Carmona and many other people who helped with the event. Recordemos que el remake de los Amos del Universo estuvo en desarrollo desde 2009 por los estudios Warner Bros. pero perdieron el interés y dejaron a un lado la franquicia, la cual fue retomada por Sony Pictures que dispuso un ejército de escritores para trabajar en el guión. Hasta el momento también se desconoce quiénes interpretarán He-Man y Skeletor, famosos personajes que fueron creados en 1981 por la empresa Mattel y que dos años después estelarizaron una serie animada y más tarde la película con actores reales teniendo al frente a Frank Langella y Dolph Lundgren, quien ya se apuntó para regresar a esta nueva versión.

Selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) using urea to remove NOx Wet electrostatic precipitator (WESP) Fixed bed granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorber, including demister and skid-mounted blower and electric heater for startup Modification of the existing secondary heat exchanger bypass Re-configuration of the existing induced fan Modification of the existing wet scrubber Stainless steel ductwork with insulation and jacketing Miscellaneous improvements, including extension of the compressed air, potable water and non-potable water systems to the new equipment, powering of the new equipment, and connection to and programming of the plant control system. Provisions for a complete, operational, functional and compliant air emissions controls system with performance guarantees enabling the existing 60 dry ton per day fluidized bed sewage sludge incinerator to meet required air emissions limits. Provisions for dewatered sludge disposal of approximately 100 wet tons of dewatered sludge per day during all incinerator downtime. Biosolids handling and disposal costs to be included in the bid price.

This project is required by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources under Administrative Order of Consent No. APCPP-2015-077.
