That evening, the HCC hosted its first Nuestra Latina Awards ceremony in the B.E.S.T. Conference Center on the KU Edwards campus in Overland Park, Kansas. After an hour of mingling, the ceremony started with a speech by guest speaker Geena Mayback. The Bank of America executive spoke about what it means for Latinas to receive recognition for their efforts and how that intersects with being part of the Latino community.

Researchers are studying the reasons behind the upsurge in colon cancer among younger adults. They’re looking at environmental factors as well as genetics. Whatever the causes, the “significant” rise prompted the American Cancer Society to lower the recommended age for regular colon cancer screenings to 45.

The recommendation is controversial.

Multiple factors contributing to Mexico City’s water crisis

By the time water reaches Mexico City’s suburbs, water pressure has almost dropped to a drip. Because the pipes are prone to breaks, fixing them is a never-ending job for repair workers.

The poorest residents are the worst affected, with some relying on buying water per liter. That’s the most expensive way to access water, Arnoldo Matus Kramer, Mexico City’s chief resilience officer, explained in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC).

“We need to understand that access to water is a human right,” Kramer said.

Heavy rainfall also has affected the crisis. The wet season, between June and September, brings frequent flash floods that cause many problems, including the overflow of the sewage system and bursting of sewage pipes that fill houses with dirty water.

Fresh water reservoirs are deep underground below Mexico City. The natural aquifers should be replenished by the rainfall, but the shortage of water means that the natural water reserves are being emptied at a faster rate than they can be filled.

“We are exploiting our local aquifers at a very high rate. At the same time, we haven’t invested enough resources to have a robust monitoring system,” Kramer told the BBC. Because the aquifers are not being filled with water enough to support the ground above, some parts of the city are sinking at about 12 inches per year. The sinking, in turn, affects the city’s infrastructure by damaging water pipes.

With the population expected to reach 30 million by 2030, Mexico City’s natural water reserves could be dried out as soon as 30 years, according to experts.

First, President Trump wants to make it more difficult for immigrants to become permanent residents in the United States. We are seeing a lot of changes in the systems to get your green card.

It is important to stay informed from reliable, serious sources.

Second, the Public Charge rules only affect people applying for permanent residency through their family members. Any changes would not affect anyone applying for a U visa, for asylum, TPS or US citizenship. Also, public benefits received by US citizen children will not be a problem for families.

Third, we will fight. The government has not yet formally introduced the proposed changes. Once they do, we will have 60 days to submit comments about the proposal. We are now preparing to submit more than 100,000 comments nationally.

The government must review the comments and hopefully change the rule to reflect the thoughts of the community.

Finally, the rule is not retroactive: once the 60-day public comment period has been completed and the final rule is approved, there will be a 60-day grace period. This means that the earliest that immigrants would need to withdraw from programs to avoid being penalized would be in 120 days, but they should consult with their attorney before making a decision. There is no reason to cancel Medicaid or other vital programs at this time.

“It’s not shocking, because the communities of color disproportionately face all the highest burdens, whether it’s housing, lack of jobs or education,” Tracey Capers, executive vice president of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corp., a community development initiative in New York, told The Associated Press.

Low-income households with children also were heavily affected. According to studies, housing for low-income individuals and families tend to be less energy efficient.

In addition, a 2016 study revealed that African-American and Latino households paid more utilities per square foot than the average household.

To help families with energy costs, the U.S. government offers the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. It provides federally funded assistance to manage costs associated with home energy bills.

hen Laura Kelly was considering a place to raise her children, Kansas was one of the places she thought would work.

“I thought Kansas had the strong sense of community, but probably first and foremost, … (it had a) stellar public-school system,” Kelly said in an interview with Dos Mundos. “I really wanted my kids to take advantage of that.”

That decision would lead Kelly to eventually serve in public office.

In 2004, Kelly was elected to the Kansas Senate. She opted to pursue the job after learning her state senator wanted to defund public schools.

“I couldn’t let (him) go there, so I ran – and I won by a small margin,” she said.

Since then, Kelly has been re-elected t h re e t i m e s . S h e believes her time in the state Senate has given her the experience needed to be Kansas’ n e x t g o v e r n o r.

The Democrat, who’s running against Republican Kris Kobach and independent candidate Greg Orman in the Nov. 6 general elections, believes her experience will help her understand and address state issues.

“Ihavelivedthrough the eight years of (the) Sam Brownback administration,” she said. “I know what a world of hurt our state is in. It doesn’t matter where you look, … everything has been devastated.”

Ensuring that Kansas public schools are among the nation’s best is a priority of Kelly.

To achieve that goal, she plans to not only fund schools, but also work with partners to improve mental health and technical education, as well as early childhood education.

“It’s my plan to form as many public-private partnerships all across the state (as possible), so that we can get to our kids early,” Kelly said.

Kelly also plans to reinvest in state infrastructure, mainly roads and bridges. Her plans include technological infrastructure, too, through expanding broadband connections in rural communities.

Kelly’s other goals include expanding Medicaid, a move that will give 150,000 more Kansans access to healthcare, she said.

Voter registration laws must change, too, according to Kelly. To achieve that, she encourages Kansans to vote for Brian McClendon for secretary of state.

“I would work very closely with him, so that we (can) craft legislation to take to the legislature to fix some of the voter suppression laws,” she said.

Although Kelly supports the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, she favors passing what she considers sensible gun control laws, such as requirements for background checks and training. In addition, she has a comprehensive plan to improve rural communities, making Kansas more welcoming, among other things.

Kelly understands that people might doubt politicians and their ability to achieve what they promise. However, she believes “that everything we’ve laid out we’ll be able to accomplish,” she said.

Kelly believes her experience of working across party lines as a state senator will help her keep her campaign promises.

“I can take that into the governor’s office and work with the legislature … right off the bat to start fixing the mess,” she said.

Kansas City area marriage and family therapist disputes the popular belief A in American culture that “in order to be

successful, one must have … high self-esteem.”

Her name is Danielle Reeves. A supervised marriage and family therapist at Great Oaks Therapy Center in Kansas City, Missouri, Reeves believes that self-esteem can play a part in one’s success, but she encourages people to look at the two separately. She also believes that self-esteem is among the most powerful tools individuals have, but is often misunderstood.

“I think we tend to look for self-esteem from otherpeople,” she said. “And I think it’s really hard, yet really powerful, when we shift that (focus) to be self-validated, rather than other-validated – to recognize, ‘I have control over my own self-esteem and my own self-worth.’”

When one accepts one is capable and r e c o g n i z e s o n e ’s importance and strength, one will have better self-control.

Ultimately, then, one will have a better definition of the kind of success one is pursuing, according to Reeves.

“As a culture right now, we have information so readily at our fingertips that it’s so easy to fall into that comparison of ‘I’m supposed to be at this place at this stage in my life, doing these three things’ and then, ‘Am I doing it?’” she stated.

In the digital era, Reeves encourages people to simply give themselves time to catch up and ask what they should paying attention to. “(It’s obvious) many define their own success,” Reeves said. “You simply need to think about what contributes to your definition of success, whether it’s your family, your career or your education.”

According to the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, about 15 percent of U.S. high school students were electronically bullied in the year before the survey. The numbers are increasing every year.

Because cyber-bullying is relatively new, no set guidelines exist yet on how to prevent or manage it. But an advisable first step is to identify the types of online bullying. According to the End to Cyber-Bullying Organization, some of the most common types include the following: *Harassment: This involves repeatedly sending offensive, malicious messages to an individual. Often, this form of cyber-bullying leads to harassment in the offline world. *Flaming: This type of cyber-bullying involves sending harsh language or images directly to the victim. Sometimes, the victim will confront the cyber-bullying and an online fight will ensue, via e-mails or instant messaging. *Exclusion: Exclusion starts by leaving a person out of an online group. Later, the group will leave malicious comments and harass the person it had excluded. *Outing: Here, the attacker publicly shares personal and private pictures, videos or information about the victim. By disseminating the information online, the attacker hopes it will become viral and further torment the victim. *Masquerading: The bully assumes a fake identity or anonymously sends malicious messages to the victim.

El Servicio de Inspección y Seguridad Alimentaria del Departamento de Agricultura de EE. UU. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recently issued a press release explaining the process behind the recall. “(The) FSIS was notified of an investigation of E. coli O26 illnesses,” the FSIS stated. “(The) FSIS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state public health and agriculture partners determined that raw ground beef was the probable source of the reported illnesses.

The epidemiological investigation identified 17 illnesses and one death, with illness onset dates ranging from July 5 to July 25,” the FSIS stated.

Affected states include Kansas, Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

In Kansas, Aldi was among the store chains that was selling the beef. Products sold at Aldi included 80-percent fresh ground beef in 2-pound packages and 80-percent lean, 1/3pound fresh ground beef patties (four count).

Anyone who starts developing the E. coli symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting after consuming ground beef is advised to visit a doctor immediately. The symptoms can last a week or longer – and if untreated, E. coli can develop into a serious infection.

To avoid an E. coli O26 illness, the FSIS advises people to consume ground beef that has been cooked at 160 degrees Fahrenheit to kill the bacteria. In addition, consumers should wash their hands after handling raw meat, poultry and eggs.

odavía no limpiaban la sangre. El 2 de octubre de 1968 el gobierno del presidente Gustavo Díaz Ordaz había realizado una horrorosa masacre en la plaza de Tlatelolco en la Ciudad de México. Cientos de estudiantes — nunca sabremos exactamente cuántos — habían sido asesinados por el ejército y agentes policiales. Elena Poniatowska acababa de tener a su hijo y estaba amamantando. Pero no se pudo quedar quieta.

“Me hablaron dos amigas”, me contó Elena recientemente en su casa de Coyoacán, “que la situación en Tlatelolco era espantosa, que estaban perforadas todas las puertas de los elevadores, que había tanques con policías, con soldados en todas partes, había sangre en las paredes”.

On the evening of Oct. 2, 1968, the administration of Mexican President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz orchestrated a massacre of student protesters in Mexico City’s Tlatelolco Square. Hundreds — we will never know exactly how many — were gunned down by the army and the police.

That night, Elena Poniatowska, who had just given birth, was feeding her child at home, but

couldn’t keep still after she heard what was happening. “Two female friends called me,” Elena recalled recently, at her home in Coyoacan, Mexico. “They said the situation at Tlatelolco was terrifying, that their elevator doors were shot up and there were tanks with policemen and soldiers all over the place, and the walls were covered with blood.” The next day at dawn, Elena went to a military camp, where some of the students had been taken after they were arrested. But she wasn’t allowed to enter.

She then walked to the square. “I arrived at Tlatelolco. I saw women’s shoes, men’s shoes strewn all over the ground,” she told me, “like a snapshot of how people had run away while trying to save their lives. There was blood on the stairways. The police were still there.”

At that moment she decided she needed to tell this story, which the government wanted buried. She needed to gather testimonies from

witnesses, but many had already been thrown in jail. “I started visiting Lecumberri [Mexico City’s prison for men] on Sundays, under a different name, and I obtained testimonies thanks to a student there, who [later] died,” she said.

“I also went to the women’s prison, which was very far away, near Iztapalapa, and I started to put the pieces together like a reporter, which is what I am.”

She recorded some of the testimonies and took notes for others. Sometimes lawyers told her about clients who had been arrested.

“Many people went to my house to give me their accounts,” she explained. “It was like I was putting together a chorus, this huge plethora of voices. And the book, ‘La Noche de Tlatelolco’ [known in English as “Massacre in Mexico”], was the result.”

I asked Elena: Do you have the slightest doubt that President Díaz Ordaz ordered the killing of these young people?

“No,” she replied. “Díaz Ordaz was in Guadalajara, but he panicked because the Olympics were about to start [in Mexico City] a few days later. Mexico was the first Latin American country to host the Olympic Games; it was an honor for Mexico. He didn’t want the students to sabotage that.”

“La Noche de Tlatelolco” was published in 1971, at a time when Mexico was under an authoritarian regime and the press was strongly censored. I asked Elena if she put herself at risk by writing a book like this, which was sure to irk officials in the administration. “I didn’t think about the danger,” she said. “I didn’t think about the consequences it might have.”

I told her many people have called her style of journalism “combative” and “committed,” and have described Elena as someone who “takes sides.” “I have never been neutral,” she told me. “I speak from the gut. I’m sure I miss a lot of things, but I do everything from my gut.”

Fifty years after the Mexican government dealt this horrific blow to the student movement, there are still many things we don’t know. No truth and justice commission was ever launched, and the perpetrators of the massacre were never identified. But Elena bravely, and professionally, chronicled what actually took place in the summer and fall of 1968. Her book is so full of life that even today the testimonies and voices of those who were there inspire fresh outrage.

At 86, Elena has done her part with regard to history. When I spoke with her, thousands of books from her personal library were being packed into boxes to be shipped to a foundation that is taking her name. I asked if this was a moment of giving back for her. “Giving back, letting go, yes,” she said. “When I go, I want to go light.”

P.S. I’m not one to hold onto many possessions, but among the few things I treasure is a first edition of “La Noche de Tlatelolco,” tattered and full of notes I’ve scribbled on the pages. Elena Poniatowska, without knowing it, has been a mentor to me, and she remains one of the world’s greatest journalists. She autographed my book, and now I don’t need anything else.

l 26 de septiembre el Consulado de México en Kansas City, Missouri presentó el Premio a Mexicanos Distinguidos a Jorge Soberón, un profesor e investigador de la Universidad de Kansas, durante una ceremonia en la sede de Kansas City Power & Light en el centro de Kansas City.

El cónsul titular, Alfonso Navarro Bernachi, dio un breve discurso introductorio resaltando la importancia del premio.

“Este premio reconoce a los ciudadanos mexicanos que residen en el extranjero que se han desempeñado de manera sobresaliente en sus respectivas carreras profesionales, y de esta manera, ayudan a promover una imagen positiva de México a nivel internacional”, dijo Navarro Bernachi.

Luego habló de los muchos logros que hicieron de Soberón uno de los premiados. Soberón ha sido profesor e investigador en ecología y biología evolutiva de la Universidad de Kansas durante 13 años. Durante su discurso de aceptación, Soberón agradeció a su familia y amigos que vinieron a apoyarlo, y expresó, también, lo honrado y agradecido que se sentía al recibir tal reconocimiento.

“Es imposible no pensar que al otorgar esta distinción, el gobierno mexicano está haciendo una declaración. … México está diciendo: ‹Oye, mira a todas estas buenas personas que se fueron a vivir en el extranjero, son valiosas para el país en el que viven ahora’”, dijo.

Soberón concluyó diciendo que espera que ciertas personas noten declaraciones como esta.

“Desafortunadamente las personas que se beneficiarían de escuchar esto no están en este grupo”, dijo.

Soberon joined 30 other Mexicans living in 31 cities and 16 countries in receiving the award in its first edition. The award consists of a diploma and a silver medal minted by the Mint of Mexico.

During his acceptance speech, Soberon thanked his family and friends who had come out that night to support him, and he expressed how honored and grateful he felt for receiving such distinction.

“It’s impossible not to think that by awarding this distinction the Mexican government is making a statement. … Mexico is saying, ‘Hey look at all these good people that went to live abroad, they are asset to the country they live in now,’” he said.

Soberon concluded by saying he hopes certain people will notice statements like this.

“Unfortunately, the ones who will benefit from hearing this are not in this group,” he said.

Head Consul Alfonso Navarro Bernachi gave a brief introductory speech highlighting the award’s importance.

“This award acknowledges those Mexican nationals residing abroad who have performed outstandingly in their respective professional careers – and in this manner, help promote a positive image of Mexico internationally,” Navarro Bernachi said.

Navarro Bernachi then discussed the many accomplishments that made Soberon a recipient. Soberon has been a University of Kansas professor and researcher in ecology and evolutionary biology for 13 years. He also has worked for the Mexican government. Later this year, he will join the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Class of 2018.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to CiCi Rojas, president of Tico Production, LLC/Tico Sports. As part of her acceptance speech, Rojas left a message with the audience.

“Take the time to enjoy the moment,” she said.

Chi and Making Movies highlight immigrant identity, empowerment through music

Otra influencia en el trabajo de Chi fue Mattie Rhodes. Mientras trabajó ahí, escribió lo que se convertiría en el primer álbum de Making Movies, inspirado por las experiencias de otros niños inmigrantes que vio y escuchó.

“Podía ver lo que los niños pasaban. … recuerdo ser el niño desconocido,” dijo.

Making Movies se presentará desde las 4 p.m. hasta las 5:30 p.m. el sábado (6 de octubre) en The Village en Swope Park en Kansas City, Missouri.

Para la próxima presentación, Chi explicó que la banda planea establecer cabinas de registro de votantes para alentar a las personas, especialmente a los latinos, a registrarse para votar y hacer uso de su voz.

“Tenemos la oportunidad de producir cambio, de elegir a personas con ideologías similares”, explicó. “Debemos sacar ventaja de eso”.

For that upcoming performance, Chi said the band plans to set up voter registration booths to encourage people, particularly Latinos, to register to vote and make use of their voice.

“We have an opportunity to make (a) change, to elect people who share similar ideologies,” he said. “We should take advantage of that.”

Chi also said Making Movies is launching a new campaign soon, called “No te calles” (“Don’t be silent”), where the band hopes to empower people and tell them they have a voice.

“We’re explaining (to) people that they’re not voiceless, and that they should raise that voice,” Chi said.

09/27/18 Un hombre al que se le indicó que se detuviera para ser revisado por autoridades del alcoholímetro en la Ciudad de México trato de huir de las autoridades y atropelló a un oficial de la policía. El muchacho de 21 años estaba alcoholizado y fue arrestado metros más adelantes por la policía capitalina que lo llevaron a prisión.

09/28/18 Un hombre de Monterrey, Nuevo León fue asesinado brutalmente a disparos en la Colonia Ciénega Flores. Según versiones de los testigos, escucharon un disparo y notificaron a las autoridades que al llegar a la escena encontraron al hombre sin vida.

09/29/18 La violencia sigue en el estado de Jalisco en donde autoridades informaron que un hombre fue asesinado a balazos en la calle en la Colonia Zalatitán de Tonalá. Según las investigaciones este hombre fue agredido con 46 disparos. La policía de la entidad transportó el cuerpo de esta persona a que le hicieran una autopsia. Su identidad sigue siendo desconocida.

09/30/18 Una discusión entre dos personas culminó en el asesinato de una de ellas en el Estado de México. La policía informó que después de discutir, uno de los hombres comenzó a agredir a otro con un martillo hasta causarle la muerte. Las dos personas

se encontraban alcoholizadas y el criminal huyó del lugar de los hechos, pero tras dejar suficiente evidencia pudo ser detenido por la policía.

10/01/18 Un muchacho de Tamaulipas fue arrestado por las autoridades de Guadalajara, Jalisco, pues se le acusa de haber asesinado a su prima. Según versiones del criminal, él se encontraba bajo el efecto de las drogas, razón por la que mató a su familiar.

El muchacho fue arrestado después de que se llevara a cabo una investigación en la que se conectaban sus acciones criminales con la muerte de la mujer.

10/02/18 Autoridades de Chihuahua lograron la captura de una mujer de 61 años conocida por el tráfico de drogas. La mujer fue detenida después de que se le identificara y se le encontraran más de 80 paquetes de heroína para vender. La mujer fue puesta a disposición del ministerio público y ya se encuentra tras las rejas.

10/03/18 Una encuesta realizada en el estado de Chihuahua indicó que los ciudadanos no confían en las autoridades. La encuesta reveló que 67.5% de los ciudadanos señaló a la policía como corrupta, porcentaje arriba de la media a nivel nacional. Autoridades del estado no han indicado ninguna postura de como intentarán recuperar la confianza de la gente.

ienvenidos turistas, en esta edición vamos a hablar de la cuarta ciudad más grande de Alemania, lugar en donde se encuentra una de las catedrales más hermosas del planeta, nos referimos a Colonia, Alemania. Ciudad fundada en el año 38 a.C., que cuenta con poco más de 1 millón de habitantes.

Quizás pocos lo saben pero el Agua de Colonia o también conocida como Eau de Cologne o simplemente como Colonia, tiene sus orígenes en esta ciudad, aunque los perfumes ya existían, esta agua perfumada era bastante fresca por lo que fue un cambio innovador a los cargados perfumes principalmente franceses.

Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Colonia tienen un costo promedio de $1,700 y con al menos 2 escalas, mi recomendación es que viajes redondo de Kansas a Fráncfort del Meno con un costo promedio de $1,000 y de ahi tomes un tren con duración de 1 hora y 10 minutos por otros $30 de ida y otros $30 de regreso, así te podrás ahorrar por lo menos unos $500 dependiendo la fecha.

El costo promedio de habitación en un hotel 3 estrellas es de $80 por noche y en uno 5 estrellas es de $170 por noche. En cuanto a movilidad se refiere, lo más recomendable es viajar en metro, siendo uno de los más concurridos por toda la ciudad, además de pasar muy de cerca de todas las principales atracciones de la ciudad; los costos por viaje son de $3.30, pero puedes comprar un ticket para todo el día por $10.30 o bien un ticket para 5 personas por $15.50, lo que hará que tú y tus acompañantes se puedan mover por toda la ciudad a un muy bajo costo, hay algunas compañías de renta de autos, pero en horas pico el tráfico suele ser extenuante, por lo que no se recomienda manejar a menos de ser muy necesario. Para comer el platillo más típico es Rheinischer Sauerbraten, que se trata de un adobo de carne de caballo y es acompañado por un guiso agridulce, y para beber no puede faltar la Kölsch, una cerveza de producción netamente coloniense. El costo promedio de una comida es de $25 con bebida incluida.

uchas personas me preguntan por qué no pueden perdonar una infidelidad de sus parejas y mucho menos olvidarla. Sabemos que una infidelidad te mueve el piso como lo mueve el suicidio de alguien que amas: te cuestionas todo, te deprimes y se afecta tu autoestima. Pero si la pareja busca ayuda y admite “su parte en este pastel”, puede continuar la relación y, en ocasiones, la pareja crece al superar este conflicto.

Indudablemente, existen personas que no pueden olvidar, y mucho menos perdonar, una infidelidad.

En mis consultas he tratado con mujeres y hombres que incluso muchos años después de la infidelidad, siguen con el tema haciéndole la vida imposible a sus parejas. Y en otros casos más graves, el reproche puede persistir incluso hasta la muerte.

No estoy tratando de justificar la infidelidad y tampoco la estoy defendiendo. La infidelidad es tan vieja como el planeta Tierra, y de hecho cada día tiene más adeptos a pesar de las terribles consecuencias, no solo para los implicados directos, sino para los indirectos, como es el caso de los hijos de una relación.

Pero, ¿por qué es tan difícil olvidar una infidelidad?

Las personas que fueron abandonadas por una de sus figuras paternas no resisten “otro abandono” y toda la rabia que sienten contra el padre o los padres la descargan sobre la pareja que las traiciona. Como sabemos los terapeutas de parejas y familias, esas personas siempre “eligen” a alguien parecido a esos progenitores y repiten ese patrón queriendo superarlo o queriendo castigar a ese padre o madre.

Por otro lado, es común que a la gente celosa le afecte más la infidelidad. Estas personas pudieron haber crecido en un ambiente de competencia y comparaciones con los hermanos, y eso es como tener una herida abierta que nunca ha cicatrizado y a la que, encima, se le “aplica sal” como para revivir antiguos dolores y celos.

Esa persona probablemente creció en un hogar donde su padre o su madre vivían sufriendo por la infidelidad del compañero, y hasta entró en el triángulo por ellos. Por ejemplo, conozco casos de madres que mandan a sus hijas a “buscar a su papá y confirmarles si estaba con la otra”. Y conozco también casos de padres que llevan a sus hijos a conocer a su amante, metiéndolos en un terrible conflicto de lealtad: si le cuento a mamá, le fallo a papá; y si no le cuento, le fallo a mamá.

Lógicamente, son muchísimas las posibilidades.

Lo que sí está claro es que las heridas emocionales que no se “cierran o curan”, con el tiempo se pudren.

A menos que su pareja sea un adicto al sexo o un donjuán, en toda infidelidad ambos son responsables, aunque el infiel sea el más responsable.

Cuando dos personas están bien, no cabe una tercera. Y si aun así existe alguna amenaza de que alguien se cuele por ahí, cuide bien los agujeros de su cartón para evitar que otro le cante ¡bingo!

any people ask me why they can’t forgive an infidelity from their partners, let M alone, forget one. We know an infidelity rattles

your ground in the same way a suicide from a loved one does: you ask yourself why, you get depressed and it affects your self-esteem. But if the couple seeks help and admits “their part of the cake,” they can continue the relationship, and, sometimes, the couple grows to overcome the conflict.

Undoubtedly, there are people who can’t forget, let alone forgive, an infidelity. In my consultations, I have dealt with women and men who, even years after the infidelity, continue with the subject making life impossible for their partners. And in other more serious cases, the reproach may persist even to death.

I’m not trying to justify infidelity nor am I defending it. Infidelity is as old as earth, and in fact, every day it has more followers despite the terrible consequences, not only for those directly involved, but also for those indirectly involved as well, as is the case of children of a relationship.

But why is it so hard to forget an infidelity?

People who were abandoned by a parental figure can’t handle “another abandonment” and all the anger they feel against the parent or parents unload over their partner who cheats on them. As we family and couples therapists know, these people always “choose” someone similar to their parents and repeat the pattern wanting to overcome it or wanting to punish that father or mother.

On the other hand, it is common that jealous people are more affected by infidelity. These people might have grown up in an environment of competition and comparisons with siblings, and that’s like having an open wound that has never healed, and one that, on top of that, is “thrown salt” at to relive past pain and jealousy.

That person probably grew up in a home where their father or mother lived suffering because of the infidelity of one of them, and even entered a love triangle because of them. For instance, I know of cases of mothers that send their daughters to “search for their fathers and confirm whether they were with another woman.” And I also know of cases of fathers who take their kids with them to know the lover, putting them in a loyalty conflict: if I tell mom, I fail dad; and if I don’t tell her, I fail mom.

he way the Kansas City Royals ended their 50th season gives Royals infielder Whit Merrifield optimism about their 51st.

With their 2-1 season-ending loss to Cleveland Sunday afternoon (Sept.

30) at Kauffman Stadium, the Royals finished 58-104, marking the fifth time they’ve lost 100 or more games in a season. However, after going 27-68 the first half of the season, they went 31-36 the second half.

“I’m excited where we are, moving forward,” Merrifield told reporter Joel Goldberg during a postgame interview Sunday for Fox Sports Kansas City. “We (have) got a group of guys that really love each other, really play hard every day. And we (have) got some talent.”

Some baseball fans would include Merrifield in that talent pool. He ended his third season with the ballclub by leading the major leagues in total hits (192) and stolen bases

(45) and had a base hit in his final 20 games.

Merrifield helped the Royals go 15-13 in September. As Royals manager Ned Yost mentioned during his postgame press conference Sunday, it was the first month where the Royals had more wins than losses.

Yost told reporters that the improvement he saw in the ballclub over the season helped influence his decision to accept a one-season contract extension, announced Sunday.

“I like the fact that these kids made the big jump that they did,” he said.

“And still, I don’t think we’re there yet. … I (have) said all along I want to help get us into a position where we can really compete. We’re getting closer.”

The Royals were close to getting a comeback win Sunday. Shortstop and native Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor gave Cleveland a 2-0 lead by scoring on an error in the first inning and then

swatting a solo home run in the third.

Catcher and Colombian native Meibrys Viloria singled in Brian Goodwin in the fifth to make it a one-run ballgame.

The Royals threatened to win it or at least tie it in the bottom of the ninth, thanks to infielder and Dominican Republic native Rosell Herrera’s one-out infield single. But with Herrera on first and two outs, Cleveland reliever Trevor Bauer got infielder and Venezuelan native Alcides Escobar to hit into a game- and season-ending ground out.

While the Royals are looking to 2019, Cleveland is continuing to pursue its dream of winning its first World Series since 1948. The American League (AL) Central Division champions will face defending World Series champion Houston in the second round of the AL playoffs, with Game 1 set for Friday afternoon (Oct. 5) at Minute Maid Park.

porting Kansas City must wait at least a few more days for another chance to punch its ticket for the MLS Cup playoffs.

Sporting could’ve secured a playoff spot by defeating Real Salt Lake Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30) at Children’s Mercy Park. Instead, the MLS Western Conference meeting ended 1-1.

It took a second-half goal for Sporting to secure the draw and the standings point that came with it. Real Salt Lake took the opening lead in the ninth minute, when Corey Baird quickly ran down a through pass and slipped the ball past Sporting keeper Tim Melia, who came off his line to challenge Baird. Defender Ike Opara answered for Sporting in the 52nd minute by heading in a corner kick from around the edge of the 6-yard box.

“It’s good to get a goal off a set piece, … very good,” Sporting manager and technical director Peter Vermes told reporters during his postgame press conference.

“We work on it quite a bit, as most of you know. And so, to be able to score in that situation – good ball, good

run, good finish – probably pays the confidence not only of him, but the rest of the guys as well.”

With the tie, Sporting remained in second place in the conference. The club has 52 standings points – two points behind frontrunner FC Dallas. A win Saturday night (Oct. 6) against the LA Galaxy at Children’s Mercy Park and an FC Dallas loss or tie would give Sporting the lead.

A win also would secure Sporting’s playoff berth.

Vermes told reporters Sunday he likes how the club is playing as it pursues its playoff berth, saying his players are “creating good chances” to score.

Real Salt Lake also is looking to secure a playoff spot.

The Utah-based club is in sixth place in the conference with 46 points entering its conference meeting Saturday with Portland at Rio Tinto Stadium. The top six teams in each conference will make the playoffs.

As an FS1 sideline reporter mentioned to coach Mike Petke, Real Salt Lake will play Portland twice as the regular season wraps. Petke said his players must show

the same level of commitment against the Timbers that they showed against Sporting, starting with Saturday’s home game.

“We’re going to have to take control of the game

early and put them on their back foot,” he told FS1.
