ecently, throngs of boxers laced up or strapped on their gloves in Kansas City, Kansas, hoping to take their next step in pursuing a national title.

Continuing an annual tradition that started in 1936, KC Golden Gloves gave those boxers the opportunity to pursue their hopes by hosting its regional tournament. Open-division winners at the tournament, held April 11-13 at Memorial Hall, qualified for the national Golden Gloves

month after turning 17, Fanny Cabral became a mom. As a junior in high school, telling her parents was the first of many challenges she had to face.

Now 22, Cabral has overcome many of those obstacles, thanks to help from her family. The millennial mom and Kansas City resident has achieved a balance between her work and parenting, too.

“Finding a balance has always been really difficult because you don’t want to devote your time and energy to a job that only brings income and feel like you’re neglecting your child,” Cabral said. “On the other hand, I don’t want to neglect my child of basic things he needs, so obviously I … (need) to work.”

Not only did Aiden, her son, help motivate Cabral to work and succeed; he also offered her a second chance to understand things she had not understood as a child.

“I don’t think it really hit until Day 3 of being home (with) him,” she said. “I had a newborn, and I immediately panicked for a couple of minutes. But being able to study every aspect and feature of this child … my husband (and I had) made … was such a great feeling. Also, I didn’t have a huge belly anymore, so that was a plus!”

Aiden excitedly sharing his milestones and seeing his happiness in everyday activities have become Cabral’s favorite parts of being a mom. Other perks include occasionally

My granddaughter overcame early adolescent inhibitions and impediments, replaced negative thoughts with positive ones and single-mindedly strived to realize her goals.

She earned and absolutely deserves the recognition and graduation celebrations.

That it coincides with Mother’s Day is icing on the cake.

“We need to make certain our scarce public resources help those who are legally entitled to it,” Ben Carson, HUD secretary, said in a statement. “Given the overwhelming demand for our programs, fairness requires that we devote ourselves to legal residents who have been waiting, some for many years, for access to affordable housing.”

Several news outlets have stated that HUD will send Congress a proposal to prohibit any undocumented immigrant from residing in subsidized housing. If families do not comply, they will have to leave. To ensure that families comply with the rule, members of the household under the age of 62 will be screened by Systematic Alien Verification Entitlements.

The proposal has drawn criticism from some Hispanic leaders.

“This is really a broader story about how the long-term cost of (the) president’s whimsical immigration policies — here masked under a proposed HUD regulation —will be borne largely by the nearly 6 million U.S. citizen children that live in a mixed status household,” Carlos Guevara, UnidosUS senior policy advisor, said in a statement. “Make no mistake, this is part of an intentionally cruel, misguided and wasteful immigration enforcement strategy hatched by (Trump senior policy advisor) Stephen Miller and his allies.”

After four years of requiring DACA students and others to pay international tuition rates, the legislature removed that restriction from the bill!

Missouri has been a difficult state for immigrant students. This contrasts with Kansas, where they have had a law allowing in-state tuition for undocumented students since 2004.

Missouri laws have blocked undocumented students from attending altogether since 2008.

We saw progress with the DACA program as I explained to UMKC officials that they were eligible to attend. Most schools used special programs to offer in-state tuition to the students.

Then the state government heard about it and took action to make them pay international tuition and block scholarships from any student without a lawful status. DACA students are lawfully present but do not have a lawful status.

In the compromise this week, the budget will only restrict scholarship dollars, not tuition rates based on immigration status. There are still regulations restricting in-state tuition in general to students with lawful status. There are options for universities to extend special tuition programs to DACA students. Also, students with a lawful status such as a U visa, are eligible to pay in-state tuition at all universities and obtain scholarship money.

We are making progress on this issue, my friends. I encourage all young people to get involved in programs such as Latinos of Tomorrow to learn more about preparing for their futures. Tobago, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) agency announced April 26.

According to Reuters, UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch said the boat was carrying at least 25 people from the Venezuelan coastal town of Guiria when it sank in the early hours of April 24.

“This tragic incident highlights the extreme risks of sea journeys and other irregular cross-border movements undertaken by refugees and migrants,” Baloch said. “It also underscores the desperation of those forced to flee their homes and the extraordinary difficulties faced on their journey.”

Although the official manifest listed 25 people on the boat, authorities determined at least 34 were on the boat, according to a statement from Lt. Kerron Valere of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard given to the Associated Press.

The missing boat capsized near the island of Patos, located a few miles off the Venezuelan coast, with some survivors found drifting up to 34 miles from where the boat had sunk.

Since 2014, more than 3 million people have fled Venezuela because of widespread shortages of food and medicine.

Statistics point out that root canals have a 95 percent success rate. Many dentists perform the procedure when they consider it as the only option to save a tooth.

Although a root canal might be expensive, having one done could eliminate future dentalrelated expenses, such an extraction, or installing a dental implant or a bridge.

“No one likes root canals,” said Luis Merlo, a Shawnee resident. “But if it is necessary, I advise people to do it. It is better to get a root canal done than to feel pain or to lose your tooth.”

Berland es originaria de Damar, Kansas, y se graduó de la Universidad de Washburn con una Licenciatura en Arte en Medios de Comunicación en 1998. Después de trabajar en la oficina del Secretario de Estado durante su tiempo en la universidad, se unió a la división LMIS de KDOL en 1997 como pasante a medio t i e m p o . Tr a b a j ó en varios puestos diferentes de Analista de Investigación en KDOL, se convirtió en Supervisora de la Unidad en 2005 y luego en Directora Adjunta en 2009.

ansas Department of Labor (KDOL) Acting Secretary, Delía García, has selected Angela Berland to serve as Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) Director for the agency. The appointment is effective immediately.

Berland is originally from Damar, Kansas, and graduated from Washburn University with a Bachelor of Art in Mass Media in 1998. After working in the Secretary of State’s office throughout college, she joined KDOL’s LMIS division in 1997 as a parttime intern. She worked in several different Research Analyst positions at KDOL, became a Unit Supervisor in 2005 and then Deputy Director in 2009. Berland served on numerous internal committees and on multi-agency initiatives and currently serves on the National Policy Council of the Local Area Unemployment Statistics Program.

Acting Secretary García believes Berland’s experience will be a definite asset to the KDOL Leadership team. “With over 20 years at KDOL in the LMIS division, we are confident that Angela will make a smooth transition into this leadership role,” she said.

“We congratulate Ms. Berland on her promotion and are certain that her outstanding background and leadership skills will serve KDOL and all Kansans well.”

05/04/19 Un operativo realizado en el Estado de México dejó como resultado 114 personas detenidas. Autoridades informaron que más de 2600 miembros de la SEDENA y de la Policía Federal participaron en el operativo que incluyó a 126 colonias que son consideradas peligrosas.

Algunos de los detenidos se enfrentarán a delitos contra la salud, robo, posesión de armas, cohecho, usurpación de funciones públicas y ataques a las vías de comunicación.

Gracias a este operativo se logró rescatar a 11 personas entre ellas 7 personas indocumentadas.

Denouncing a Dictatorship Para la Libertad

“Para la libertad, sangro, lucho, pervivo.”

— Miguel Hernández, “El hombre acecha” Sólo tengo palabras de aliento y admiración para los millones de venezolanos que están luchando para ser libres. No sé cómo va a terminar la crisis en Venezuela. Pero sí sé quienes son los que tienen las armas y están matando. Y sé también quienes son los que llevan 20 años en rebeldía.

Venezuela — lo viví hace poco — es un estado policíaco apuntalado por decenas de miles de agentes cubanos. En un país con una inflación anual superior al millón por ciento, apagones, hospitales sin medicinas y un salario mínimo mensual equivalente a unos dólares, se necesita mucho valor para salir a las calles a protestar. La represión es, siempre, la reacción del que se siente amenazado.

Por eso me sorprenden tanto esas imágenes en las redes y en la televisión de gente que no se deja. Hay veces — como la semana pasada— en que pienso: Maduro ya perdió. Y luego oigo los balazos, los gritos del joven reventado por una tanqueta y las motos de los colectivos, y la desesperanza se vuelve a posar. Estamos todos agotados de este juego de altas expectativas y reveses.

Pero a la mañana siguiente leo Twitter y los venezolanos no se han rendido. El rescate y liberación del líder opositor Leopoldo López, tras más de cinco años de prisión, es una clara señal de que el régimen se está quebrando. Y mientras, el autoproclamado presidente interino Juan Guaidó sigue reinventando la manera de ser oposición. En una dictadura, es vital imaginarse otro país.

Es un grave error decir que la lucha de Guaidó para sacar a Nicolás Maduro es un intento de golpe de estado. No lo es. Se trata, sencillamente, de un levantamiento en contra de una dictadura.

Tan legítimo como lo fue pelear en contra del dictador chileno, Augusto Pinochet. O contra el apartheid en Sudáfrica y la esclavitud en Estados Unidos.

Todo demócrata debería denunciar cualquier dictadura, sea de derecha o de izquierda. No hay dictaduras buenas. Y Maduro es un dictador brutal.

Fue electo presidente en 2013 y elegido como sucesor al dedazo por el caudillo Hugo Chávez antes de su muerte. But then I hear the guns, the screams of a young man being crushed by an armored car, the motorcycles of the pro-Maduro “colectivos,” and I feel hopeless again. We are all tired of this endless roller coaster ride — moving from high hopes to utter disappointment in a heartbeat.

He is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of young people who took to the streets against him, according to Hugo Carvajal, the former head of military intelligence known as “El Pollo.” Data provided by the human rights organization Foro Penal shows that his government had detained 775 political prisoners as of the end of April. Human Rights Watch has documented over 380 violations of human rights, including instances of torture.

Spurlock said his office has two suspects in custody. One of them has been identified as 18-year-old Devon Erickson. The other suspect is a juvenile female. Both suspects are students. He said it is too early to discuss motives for the attack.

“I have to believe that the quick response of the officers that got inside that school helped save lives,” Spurlock said.

The shooting comes less than a month after the area marked the 20th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, in which two shooters killed 13 people and themselves.

This attack marked the beginning of an era of school shootings and has changed police responses to active shooter situations.

In fact, the week of the anniversary, a threat shut down area schools for nearly 500,000 students when a Florida woman, inspired by Columbine, purchased a weapon, flew to Denver and disappeared.

Authorities found her two days later.

The school will be closed the rest of the week.

uadalupe Centers organizó su celebración anual del Cinco de Mayo del 4 al 5 de mayo.

Las familias que asistieron disfrutaron del entretenimiento local y de fuera del estado, mariachis, bailarines folklóricos, camiones de comida, paseos, zoológico de mascotas, vendedores, concursos y sorteos, entre otras cosas.

El evento fue gratuito para el público. La celebración del Cinco de Mayo sirve para recaudar fondos para los diversos programas que organizan los Centros Guadalupe. La tradición comenzó originalmente en 1922.

Los patrocinadores incluyeron el Fondo de Desarrollo Turístico Vecinal de KC, la Fundación Kauffman, KC P&L, Telemundo Kansas City, el Periódico Dos Mundos, Noticias Hispanas de KC, La Grande 1340 AM, Univision Kansas City y Capitol Federal Bank, entre otros.

ienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de una ciudad cosmopolita de nuestro país, que además está considerada como una de las más grandes de todo el país, nos referimos a Dallas, Texas. Fue fundada en el año 1841 y cuenta con cerca de 1 millón y medio de habitantes mientras que su área metropolitana es la cuarta más poblada de todo el país contando con cerca de 8 millones de habitantes.

La ciudad de Dallas tiene la intención de volverse uno de los destinos más importantes por conocer en todo EE.UU., es por eso que cuenta con el segundo aeropuerto más grande del país y el séptimo con más tráfico aéreo en el mundo. Actualmente es la ciudad más visitada cada año en el estado de Texas y en el año 2014 fue una de las 3 más visitadas dentro

del país. Es de destacarse que la ciudad cuenta con el mayor distrito urbano de arte en todo EE.UU. Con más de 160 museos dentro de toda la zona metropolitana.

Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Dallas tienen un costo promedio de $180 y en su mayoría son directos. La mejor manera de moverse dentro de la ciudad es en transporte público, existen variadas opciones entre las que más destacan los autobuses y el servicio de tren, si vas a moverte por varios puntos de la ciudad al día te recomiendo compres alguna de las opciones de viajes ilimitados por día.

El hospedaje en Dallas tiene un costo promedio de $90 por noche en un hotel 3 estrellas y de unos $400 por noche en un hotel 5 estrellas. Debido a que Texas es famoso por su ganado es lógico pensar en que la gastronomía del lugar va ligada a esto, es por eso que los platillos principales que se ofrecen en la ciudad son de distintos cortes finos de carne, además debido al pasado mexicano de la ciudad también es común encontrar que en distintos restaurantes se utilicen las tortillas, las salsas picantes, el guacamole y más acompañantes de la comida mexicana, no olvides dejar de probar un vino, ya que Dallas también se destaca por sus buenos viñedos. hysically speaking, Sporting Kansas City is hurting.

And no doubt, the pro soccer club was hurting emotionally after losing to Atlanta United 3-0 Sunday night (May 5) at Children’s Mercy Park.

As the team reported Sunday morning on its website, nine players were on Sporting’s injury report list, including seven who could not play. One of the two players listed as questionable, midfielder Ilie Sanchez, came off the bench Sunday.

Manager and Sporting director Peter Vermes wished he had not played the native Spaniard, who was nursing a calf injury.

“He didn’t train all week,” Vermes told reporters during his postgame press conference. “He didn’t train one day. But … we needed something else to give us a little more push forward.”

This is a 24/7 operation and some shift work is required. Manages the performance of the team of mechanics assigned to their shift by assigning daily work tasks, handles day to day coaching, and conducts training as needed. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with the operation and maintenance of High Pressure Steam Boilers, Large Chillers, Large Air Compressors, High Voltage Electrical Distribution, HVAC systems including hydraulics/pneumatics, plumbing, electrical, and welding. Must be able to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics and use them for troubleshooting. Assures that daily logbooks and other records are completed, including safety training and project lists. Assures our preventative maintenance program is being used and properly administered. Maintains compliance and documentation of all OSHA, HAZCOM, EPA, State and City regulations. Excellent verbal and written communication and computer skills are required.

REQUIRES high school graduation and 5 years of experience in mechanical and trades maintenance and repair with 1 year of experience at the level of Maintenance Mechanic. Must successfully complete a 10-year FAA background check. Must pass a preemployment drug screen and post-offer physical examination as prescribed by the City. NOTICE OF REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS PHYSICAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT 19-16-All The Housing Au t h o r i ty of Ka n s a s C i ty, Kansas hereby provides notice that it will receive proposals from qualified firms and individuals to perform a Physical Needs Assessment (PNA) and an Energy Audit (EA) in accordance with all current HUD regulations, for all Kansas City Ka n s a s Housing Authority developments.

Written proposals will be received in person, or through the mail, until 2:00 p.m., CDT, on May 29th, 2019, at the Kansas City Kansas Housing Authority main office located at 1124 North 9th Street, Kansas City, Kansas.

P r o p o s a l s received after this time will not be considered.

In selecting the firm to perform these services consideration will be given to those criteria listed in the Request for Proposals (RFP).

The Housing Authority reserves the right to reject any or all proposals, to waive any irregularities and to reject any and all proposals or to request additional information from any respondent.

All qualified firms, including minority-owned, women owned and Section 3 businesses are invited to submit a proposal.

Copies of the RFP, which contains the instruction for submitting proposals, may be obtained at the Housing Authority’s a d m i n i s t ra t i ve office or on line at www.kckha.org under “Current Bid Opportunities”, beginning May 6th, 2019.
